Notes and quotes from Wednesday’s practice
By Steve Corkran
Wednesday, August 18th, 2010 at 9:31 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Kyle Boller’s magical mystery tour through Raiders training camp just keeps getting better and better.
He arrived at training camp as the No. 4 quarterback, well behind backup candidates Bruce Gradkowski and Charlie Frye, who combined for seven starts last season, and just hopeful of getting some positive plays on film.
Now, he is making steady progress toward earning a spot on Oakland’s 53-man roster through his impressive showing in practice and the Raiders first exhibition game, as well injuries to Gradkowski and Frye.
“He’s doing well,” Raiders coach Tom Cable said after Wednesday’s practice. “The game against Dallas speaks for itself, and he’ll get another opportunity this weekend to see if he can consistently do that.”
This weekend, as in Saturday night against the Chicago Bears in the second of four exhibition games.
Jason Campbell will start the game and give way to Boller at some point in the first half.
With Frye and Gradkowski not expected to play, Boller can count on extensive playing time once again. He made the most of it against the Cowboys.
“I’ve been in this business long enough to know that you’re a play away from being in there, so I’ve always taken the approach to prepare like a starter,” Boller said. “I watch the same amount of tape. You have to be ready when you’re opportunity comes.
“It seems as the years go on, more and more guys get hurt, unfortunately. That’s why you have to take advantage when opportunities present themselves.”
Boller also benefits from the year he spent with Raiders offensive coordinator Hue Jackson when they were with the Baltimore Ravens.
“It does help because there is a confidence for Kyle, and he understands because he’s been coached by that guy,” Cable said. “He understands what he’s looking for, what he’s asking for. That helps him being able to step in and have some confidence right from the beginning.”
– Cable said fourth-string quarterback Colt Brennan “probably” will play against the Bears. Brennan didn’t get an opportunity to play against the Cowboys in Oakland’s first exhibition game.
– Cable heaped high praise upon strong-side (“Sam) linebacker Kamerion Wimbley. In the process, he disparaged the likes of Ricky Brown and Sam Williams.
“The thing I am most excited about is Dallas ran three power plays in there and, for the first time since I have been around here, our ‘Sam’ backer stood up the fullback all three times. That’s what he brings. He understands what you’re asking him to do; plays it the way you’re asking.”
The Raiders traded for Wimbley during the offseason and gave up almost nothing to the Cleveland Browns for a first-round draft pick five years ago.
– Frye on Wednesday underwent a surgical procedure to repair damage to his right (throwing) wrist. Cable said he won’t know how long Frye is out for until he rejoins the team in the next few days.
– Running back Darren McFadden (hamstring) did not practice Wednesday and won’t play against the Chicago Bears on Saturday night, Cable said.
On the bright side, McFadden is making great progress toward a return to the practice field for the first time since Aug. 7.
“He is much, much improved,” Cable said, “and he is pretty close to being ready to go but, again, I am probably going to lean toward being more protective now.”
– Wide receiver Chaz Schilens (foot), right offensive tackle Langston Walker (rest) and cornerback Chris Johnson (hamstring) also missed practice.
Receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey dressed for practice and participated in some drills, though not at full capacity. He didn’t run any routes and spent most of his time watching his teammates from a distance.
Cable dismissed the suggestion that Heyward-Bey is nursing a sore hamstring. However, Heyward-Bey was sporting a sizable wrap that extended from below his left knee and somewhere up around the thigh region.
It seemed rather apparent in practice Monday that Heyward-Bey tweaked his hamstring. Yet, Cable says Heyward-Bey’s lack of activity the past two days owes more to “fatigue.”
– Jackson was at his animated best during several drills Wednesday. At one point, he ordered backup offensive lineman Khalif Barnes off the field for a false-start penalty.
“Get me another left tackle,” Jackson said. “We ain’t doing that no more. We can’t be jumping offside. You do, you’re out of there.”
– Based upon absolutely nothing, other than 15 years covering the Raiders and having a feel for how managing general partner Al Davis operates: Look for the Raiders to sign veteran wide receiver Torry Holt now that he is gone from the New England Patriots.
The Raiders need a veteran presence, several of their receivers have been in and out of the lineup because of nagging injuries and a team never can have enough proven playmakers.
Remember, Davis has a long history of signing receivers with comparable resumes to that of Holt – James Lofton, Andre Rison, Jerry Rice and Javon Walker come to mind.
– Speaking of Davis, he was at practice Wednesday for the sixth time since camp opened July 29. Hue Jackson broke from practice for about a 10-minute one-on-one with Davis.
It was unclear who was doing most of the talking. Davis spoke from a golf cart, while Jackson took a knee on the grass between the two fields.
– Rookie safety Stevie Brown intercepted yet another pass in what has become an all too common occurrence at camp.
Brown caught the carom off the hands of fullback Alex Daniels’ hands and the hands of at least two other players. Brown also intercepted a pass on the final play of the Cowboys game.
– Rookie cornerback Jeremy Ware worked with the first-team in the nickel package as part of Cable’s plan to get a look at the younger players against seasoned players.
– Linebacker Sam Williams (concussion) said he expects to be back at practice within the next few days.
“I’m still a little cloudy, but I’m getting there,” Williams said in reference to his head. He added that he hasn’t passed the required tests necessary for his return.
– Backup tight end Brandon Myers was unable to finish practice because of a pass that hit off the end of one of his fingers. Cable said Myers was sent for an X-ray. No word on the findings just yet.
– Observations from one-on-one drills between offensive and defensive linemen: rookie Jared Veldheer held off defensive end Matt Shaughnessy on back-to-back snaps.
Defensive end Trevor Scott abused right offensive tackle Erik Pears on back-to-back plays, one to the outside, one on the inside.
Defensive tackle William Joseph got the better of rookie guard Bruce Campbell on one play, but he got neutralized the second go round.
Left guard Robert Gallery stonewalled defensive tackle Richard Seymour on back-to-back plays.
Or, as Cable is fond of saying, that’s just another example of “iron sharpens iron.”
– Tight end Zach Miller was a one-man wrecking crew during passing drills, as usual.
He caught passes for touchdowns three times in a short span, one for 30 yards from Campbell, two others from Boller.
Safety Jerome Boyd, safety Stevie Brown and linebacker David Nixon were victimized, in order.
You get the sense that the only things that can prevent Miller from improving upon last season’s impressive stats are injuries and a steady diet of double teams (bracket coverage).

22 you are correct, NE cut Holt and gave him an injury settlement, a knee injury tha will require surgery
August 19th, 2010 at 1:12 am
Holt?
Sources including the National Football Post report that Holt, who was placed on injured reserve on Sunday with a knee injury that will require surgery, was due $1.15 million base salary and was given a $50,000 signing bonus when New England brought him in back in April.
Al should have signed TO when he was there for the taking.

The RAIDERS won 5 games last year with a drugy QB, no OC, VERY young players, SOFT front 7….
What do you base 6 wins on?
I am smellin 9 wins, 10 if we can beat SD.
August 19th, 2010 at 1:21 am
We now have a legit OC, an average QB, STOUT front 7, and a few key players 1 year more seasoned.

-injury prone Chaz?

outside of TE Zach Miller, it’s wide open pal

August 19th, 2010 at 6:53 am
I agree we could use a veteran WR who can compete or at least give some pointers to this bunch of kids we have.
The only guy out there who may be able to help is Kevin Curtis, former eagle who has had injuries the last 2 years, if he’s healthy we should give him a call, he’s not as old as Holt and might have a year or two left in the tank.
August 19th, 2010 at 6:53 am
in Seymour’s defense…
Left guard Robert Gallery is healthy. many DT’s around the league will be stonewalled by him this year

I think we need to start the conversation with which WR could a guy like Curtis, Holt, or whoever replace? I think it’s pretty clear that Raiders are committed to the young guys Chaz, DHB, Murphy, JLH, and Ford. Will some vet want to come in as the 6th WR and be inactive most of the season? I think Watkins or Miller will be he 6th WR.
August 19th, 2010 at 7:02 am
The passing game will remain a weakness this year, even with Campbell and the kids improving, it takes a while to put it all together and one training camp is not enough.
Let’s just hope we can produce some first downs, cut down turnovers and stay longer on the field, low scoring battles should be expected most sundays.
August 19th, 2010 at 7:03 am
So…if Bruce Almighty and Frye not being able to go, at what point does the decision have to be made about them two?
***
Hwnrdr: they are just playing it safe with Bruce (and rightfully so)
Cable said he wouldn’t know the time table of Frye’s return until he reports (probably today) – I’m thinking he’ll start out on the PUP list or be waived/injured and get an injury settlement
Campbell/Boller/Brennan at Chicago
this may be Colt’s only opportunity to WOW the coaches before Bruce is back at full strength. hope he makes the most of it
August 19th, 2010 at 7:04 am
McFadden will be the “6th receiver” he will have more receiving yards than rushing… imo
August 19th, 2010 at 7:05 am
Campbell will probably play 3 quarters of the next game (SF right? not this week at chicago) So Colt definitely wont get a shot there, but the 4th game Campbell wont play more than a series or 2 so maybe that game he will have a shot
August 19th, 2010 at 7:06 am
J Wiggle
You’re probably right, they’re keeping the top 5 and it may be better in the long run to kee Nick Miller and see if he can develop, Watkins has had enough chances IMO.

Marley: JCamp doesn’t have to be Superman – he just has to manage the game and limit turnovers. put his leadership on display and put his guys in position to make plays
the running game and defense alone could carry this team to 8-8 imo. JCamp won’t be a Pro Bowler, but I still think he’s capable of 3600 yards & 20 TD’s in Oakland

the 4th game Campbell wont play more than a series or 2
***
I think that depends on how well he does in Preseason games #2 & #3 … if he plays like he did against Dallas, they better keep him in there for at least a quarter to develop some chemistry with the young wides against real defenses (not 7-on-7 drills in shirts & shells w/o hitting)
if JCamp continues to struggle and proves to be a 3 & out king, how could you sit him in preseason and feel comfortable starting him Week 1 against the Titans ???
August 19th, 2010 at 7:15 am
Gradkowski is a lock for the roster barring injury.
I do think Boeller is making a case for #2 though.
August 19th, 2010 at 7:16 am
I just hope Glasskowski survives the last two preseason games!
August 19th, 2010 at 7:18 am
if JCamp continues to struggle and proves to be a 3 & out king, how could you sit him in preseason and feel comfortable starting him Week 1 against the Titans ???
——————————————————-
I think you have to factor in the Oline with those 3 and outs. False start turns a 3rd and 4 to 3rd and 9. Sack given up by Satele gives JC a 3rd and 15. Missed block by Carlisle on Spencer blows up a 3rd down screen play that was well set up.
August 19th, 2010 at 7:20 am
At this point, you would have to think that the Frye-guy is the odd man out in the QB competition. Boller is getting plenty of work right now, which is really good for him — and he seems to be taking advantage of that. I’m glad to see him somewhat salvage his career. Question for the Nation — do we keep an eye on Sinorise Moss, with the Giants? He may be hard-pressed to make their squad this year with the emergence of the young guy Cruz … should we take a flier on him and get rid of one of our “has had lots of chances” guys?
August 19th, 2010 at 7:21 am
Jwigg: you mentioned 3 guys there on the O-Line, but Mario Henderson is the one doing push-ups and Barnes is the one being yanked off the field by Hue Jax.
what gives ???

August 19th, 2010 at 7:24 am
Yes, Boller is making a strong case for #2, and sad to say…he MAY make a case for #1 at some point this year…Let’s hope that Campbell gels quickly with the O and takes off soon!!! (I know, only one training camp behind our line and the greatest rookie receivers, but…)
August 19th, 2010 at 7:25 am
you can’t sign an injured player, unless they are healthy enough to pass a physical, even at less than 100 percent
August 19th, 2010 at 7:26 am
“The Patriots and receiver Torry Holt have reached an injury settlement, which essentially makes the injured veteran a free agent.
New England placed Holt, a seven-time Pro Bowler it signed in the offseason, on injured reserve with a knee injury Sunday. He will undergo surgery this week.
The move means that Holt is no longer a member of the Patriots, and sheds light on Bill Belichick’s Tuesday comment that he “didn’t think” Holt would stick around the team’s facility during his rehab from surgery to mentor the younger wideouts.
Holt is free to join another team later in the season when he’s healthy.”

In yesterday’s press conference, Coach C made several references to Figurs — he must really be making an impression in camp. Interesting that when he talked about the “continuing development of our young receivers”, he kind of glossed over Darrius and focused more on other names. Either he’s already treating DHB like a star (though he hasn’t proven it yet) or he’s starting to turn his attention to others … very interesting!

Hell, for a couple of series, why not run “trips” with JLH, Ford and Figurs? They could certainly spread the field and open up lots of passing lanes (as well as running lanes for Bush).
You know why? Because that would be what us, the fans, would like to see! Makes sense though, doesn’t it? I mean…this is pre-season, right?

I know it’s early gents, but I have to say Chazzerella, McSkinny legs, and Darius Handsofstone Bey will beinsignificant roll players.
The reasons are obvious, look at history.
Campbell will only be as good as what WR and TE core will allow him. Unless Jackson has something up his sleeve.
Using Mcskinny legs out of the backfield might help. I hope there is a silver lining in Ford.
I see our Defense holding up the fort for 3 strong quarters and with no offense, give up like the last few years.
I hope they prove me wrong.

The early to mid 1990s really blew for me as a sports fan…Bo got hurt, Marcus got benched, Magic got the HIV, and Ryne Sandberg took a fastball to the wrist the pretty much ended the productive part of his career….and ND blew the BC game….foooook me, I think I lost ten years off my lifespan thanks to that time period.

After just one pre-season game, I would have to agree that our offense looks as ineffective as last year. I wish that in the next three to four weeks, Jason Campbell can find a WR that he trusts, other than Miller, and that Schilens and McFadden get healthy and somehow stay healthy. But, I am not holding my breath.
Modestly, I just hope that Cable and Jackson stick with the run game this season, and let Campbell start developing his timing with a large dose of play-action; Cable slowly works B. Campbell and Veldheer into the starting line, while working Carlisle and Satele out; Bush gets the majority of the carries and establishes himself in the league, while McFadden is given the ball in situations other than running up the gut; DHB catches enough balls to at least be considered a slightly below average NFL WR.

Then in 1992 Dickerson 187 carries, 3.9 ypc and 2 TDs to Allens 67 carries, 4.5 ypc and 3 TDs…

August 19th, 2010 at 9:00 am
Based on the 1st preseason game, I dont think we can make a good assessment, Campbell def wasnt comfortable. But the O-line concerns me. Satele was like a doorman, he seems to weak/small for that position. Valdeer seems to big for a center, but if he can do I say give him a shot. It’s crazy that Satale was such a good prospect before.
Don’t think we should get anymore running backs, I like cartwright and bennett, think they both could produce if need be.

Mover, shaker: Don’t tell Richard Seymour that it looks like he’ll be primarily playing defensive tackle this season.
“I’m still moving around but I’ve played primarily inside this camp,” he said. “We still have some packages where I move outside. So, we do a lot of different things defensively. It’s still training camp. We’re still in that mode.
“We’ve only played one preseason game, so it’s still too early to tell. I still can’t make no Super Bowl predictions at this point.”
Seymour, at one point last season, played all four spots on the defensive line after he came over from New England. But this year, he will be holding it down inside with Tommy Kelly most of the time. Defensive ends Lamarr Houston and Matt Shaughnessy have quickly emerged, and each had two sacks in the preseason opener.
“They had a really good start,” Seymour said. “We definitely need them to carry that over into the season. Anytime you can start fast, as a young guy it definitely builds your confidence.”

“Socially Allen traveled in lofty circles. He was a regular guest at Simpson’s Brentwood estate with Al Cowlings and other sports luminaries such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Ahmad Rashad, and Lynn Swann. But his success was leading him to trouble as he gained more attention from the media and the Raiders team and owner got less. Raiders maverick owner Al Davis was becoming increasingly aware that one of his players was being singled out above the team. Allen continued his individual brilliance the following year in 1984, leading the league in touchdowns with 18 and gaining 1,168 yards, but the Raiders faltered. By the end of the season Davis was openly calling Allen a selfish player to his coaching staff.
Allen went into the 1985 season at the top of his game and became the centerpiece of the Raiders offense. He justified the organization’s confidence with a breakout season. He gained 1,759 yards on the ground and set a single-season NFL record with 2,314 total yards. He was named the Player of the Year and voted to his third Pro Bowl, but the 12-4 Raiders again lost in the first round of the playoffs. Davis was soon complaining about the team being too ” one dimensional.”
Allen hoped to follow up the 1985 season with another strong campaign, but he injured his ankle in the third game. Despite the lack of any fracture, the pain did not go away throughout the season. Allen tried to play through the pain and even took a shot of painkillers before one game to be able to play. But he could not play the same. In a pivotal game with the Philadelphia Eagles, Allen fumbled the ball as the Raiders were in the midst of a game- winning drive, and the team lost the game. The Raiders lost the next four contests to finish the season out of the playoffs. Many Raiders observers felt that Allen’s career with the organization went downhill after that one game against the Eagles.
The 1987 season opened again with a players’ strike. Davis viewed the action as a personal betrayal rather than a work stoppage. Allen was one of the players who stayed out of camp over the course of the entire strike. He had another surprise waiting for him when he returned to the Raiders. Davis signed baseball player and college football star Bo Jackson to play for the team in the second half of the season. Allen regarded this move as an attempt to replace him, but he kept his feelings to himself. Midway through a frustrating season, he even volunteered to play fullback while Jackson played tailback. This arrangement improved the tense situation, but the Raiders were a team in decline. Longtime Raiders head coach Tom Flores even retired after the disappointing 1987 season.
The new man to lead the Raiders was former Broncos assistant Mike Shanahan. Shanahan tried to change the Raiders’ long-ball system, but was often overruled by Davis. Allen had another mediocre campaign in 1988 splitting time with Jackson. He gained 831 yards on the ground and caught only 34 passes. The only bright side of the 1988 season for Allen came outside of the professional arena. He met Kathryn Eickstaedt, a model from Wisconsin, who would become his wife.
Allen’s contract was up after the season and his agent was made to wait until the beginning of the next regular season for a new contract offer. Allen returned to a team in turmoil. Shanahan was fired after four games. The next coach was former Raiders player and assistant coach Art Shell, the first black head coach in the NFL. Allen’s excitement at playing for the new coach was tempered after he injured his knee in the first game of Shell’s tenure. He spent eight weeks on the inactive list and did not get significant playing time for the rest of the season. The 1990 season began as the previous one did–with Allen holding out, or, depending on one’s point of view, being held out. When he finally returned to camp, he was listed as the fourth running back. And matters did not improve for the former star. Allen claimed that all the coaches had been instructed by Davis not to play him and even Raider quarterback Jay Schroeder had been told not to throw the ball his way. Though the Raiders won the AFL West that year, Allen was used only in short yardage situations when the team desperately needed yards. The 1991 season started off badly as he tore a ligament in his knee in the first game. Allen missed eight games, and the Raiders lost to Kansas City in the first round of the playoffs.
In 1992 the five-time Pro Bowl player was again listed fourth on the depth chart. Allen was told before games that he would not be playing and was used only for third-down plays. He would sit on the end of the bench separate from the rest of the team. After walking out of practice one day, Allen decided he had had enough. He called Shell and demanded to be traded, but Shell told him Davis would not trade him. After confronting Davis, Allen was told that no other team would be interested in him. Allen was stuck being the best football player on a team that would not play him. Allen felt he had no choice but to file a free agency lawsuit against the Raiders and the NFL. During the Raiders game against the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football, ABC aired an interview that Allen had done just before the game with Al Michaels. Allen unloaded on Davis accusing the Raiders’ owner of trying to ruin his career. Allen’s interview was so incendiary that Michaels told Allen to call if he wanted to retract any of his statements. Allen would not back down and the interview was aired. The reaction was immediate. Though Davis made no public statement, Coach Shell went on the air, accusing Allen of lying. Despite all the division he had caused within the organization, Allen’s teammates voted to give him the Commitment to Excellence Award as the team’s most inspirational player. After 11 years with the team, his time with the Raiders was over. Allen told “Sport” magazine’s Dan Dieffenbach that he was not bitter about his time with Los Angeles: “To me, it is all an education. It was a wonderful education. Although I hated it, I didn’t realize it at the time. When I was going through it, there was not light at the end of the tunnel for me, but when you look back at it and deal with everything, it was a tremendous experience.”

Alex Daniels will definitely be on the practice squad this season. That will give him an opportunity to work at DE, OLB and FB. The guy is a phenomonal athlete; but can’t catch, we have too many LB’s on the roster and he is a bit light for DE in our scheme. I think that the coaches will find a place for the guy by next season, because he may be the next Sam Williams Scholarship recipient.

its a little unfair to call JLH “scared”, the dude has taken several ferocious hits since coming into the NFL. You don’t absorb hits like that by being aftaid of contact, in fact its quite the opposite; JLH knows those guys are coming at him full speed and still attempts the catch. I think that hit last year rung his bell for a few games, but he was returning punts “balls-out” in the Dallas game last week. JLH is still scrapping for a roster spot because he is inconsistent and slight for an NFL reciever.

Chance of becoming a good to great NFL WR…
Chaz 50/50
Murphy 75/25
JLH 50/50
DHB 40/60
Ford ????
Miller 30/70
Watkins 25/75
Figures 30/70
This is just how I see it.
August 19th, 2010 at 10:19 am
If you can admit that JLH can be a potential playmaker than why can’t you admit the same of N.Miller. That is where the issue lies with me.
***
Higgins has done it in actual games. not against Preseason scrubs. not in camp drills
August 19th, 2010 at 10:20 am
When Miller scored the touchdown in the game vs. Dallas, one of the Dallas guys said, “Well, it’s only the preseason; I guess it’s okay for them to cheat and steal a touchdown.” The play had been ruled an incompletion — after evidence clearly showing that Miller had both feeet in, one of them said, “I don’t know HOW this can be overturned.” Then, it was … what a bunch of idiots!!

I never compared N. Miller to Welker.
Murphy was a rookie last year, cut him some slack.
Yes it is my opinion to say that JLH is a one year wonder and I am entiltled to believe that, as you are entitled to believe nothing will come of N. Miller.

I will give JLH this… I would love to see him win the punt return duties and return to 2008 season form.

I don’t think you’ll see JLH returning punts this year; I see either Ford or Figurs. JLH will see most of his work lining up in the slot, I believe.

China has a good thing going right now, so I doubt they will cause any trouble themselves, or allow their dog, North Korea, off its leash.
However, I can see a time where China’s population increases so much that they are forced to invade eastern Russia for resources, and weak azz Russia will come begging the US for help.

N. Miller was on IR all last year. If he does get a chance in the regulat season perhaps he could have some success, ecspecially with Zach, Murphy and even DHB drawing more attention from the opposition. We can agree to disagree. Maybe we can pick this conversation up mid season and see where players at.

Darren Perry & Rob Ryan are gone.
Huff = 16 game starter at FS last year. one of the best cover safeties in the league
get off his jock mang!
August 19th, 2010 at 11:49 am
Huff will not be cut or traded.
Huff will start 16 games at FS and dominate (again – like last year)
better pass rush = more INT’s ???

I think the success of our secondary lies in #21.
with him moving around this year, and not just stuck to one side of the field you can damn sure bet QB’s are going to make more mistakes than ever. they live in fear of Nnamdi, and with him moving around, they are going to have a tougher time figuring out who is “safe” to throw to, and probably have to stare down the recievers a little more than normal

Higgins has done it in actual games. not against Preseason scrubs. not in camp drills

N. Miller was on IR all last year. If he does get a chance in the regulat season perhaps he could have some success, ecspecially with Zach, Murphy and even DHB drawing more attention from the opposition. We can agree to disagree. Maybe we can pick this conversation up mid season and see where players at.
*************************
NMiller wasn’t on IR at all last year. He should have been placed on IR but wasn’t. The coaches kept him on the active 53 all year even though he was injured. That to me speaks volumes of what they feel NMiller’s value/potential is. I can only assume by their prior actions that they are VERY high on NMiller. I fully expect to see him make this years’ active 53. I also expect him to make significant contributions to our success this upcoming season.

Percy Harvin collapses during Vikes’ practice
Percy Harvin collapsed during Thursday’s practice and was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.
Coach Brad Childress said that Harvin had an “episode” and not really a “seizure.” It was apparently triggered when Harvin looked at the sky on a punt return and is almost certainly related to his migraine woes. Harvin was trembling and partially responsive as medical personnel got him off the field. This is scary stuff as the Vikings held a team prayer afterward. Aug. 19 – 2:01 pm et

Dakota, you never give up. I’ll give you that. I hope you are right but I won’t be wagering any funds on DMac’s pro bowl appearance. I think a safer bet would be on if he can go 10 games without an injury. Even then, that’s a dicey bet. “Pro Bowl? Did he say Pro Bowl. Give me a break.” Isn’t that how coach Mora phrased it? Somehow seems appropriate right now. LOL

Hue Jackson runs the offense. he wasn’t here last year, therefore didn’t advocate the 15 Week love-affair or scholarship. He’s done nothing in regular season games. hasn’t even been active for any
he didn’t enter the game last night until the 4th quarter, as a receiver or return man … was behind Watkins, Higgins, Figurs and even Bodiford
had 2 passes thrown his way. 1 was incomplete and the other one was a gift from the refs. Even Jwigg (his biggest supporter) ruled it out! his single return opportunity was a fair catch

Yeah, I think bringing a little heat in key situations will bring more ints. Maybe moving Nnamdi will as well, if he is able to lock down their best WR. They were both on staff and caught Big Al’s eye that’s what I meant.
August 19th, 2010 at 1:27 pm
Dell,
I agree with BP/FK…it seems a little extreme to punish the QBs stats simply because he has a poor o-line. Generally you are drafting the QB for his attributes, not for his o-line’s attributes, and yet I see your point about dialing back pass happy QBs, so there should be some punishment for taking a sack. If a QB gets 25 points for the game, but is sacked 3 times for -6 points, seems like too much of a punishment…-3 points and a score of 22 just seems more equitable. I believe in general, that QBs bear more responsibility for INTs than for sacks.

What gives? Tuned in here for some political debate and all anyones talking about is Raiders football?!
August 19th, 2010 at 1:36 pm
Let me set this up, in the proper context.
The Raiders weakness has been the inability to stop the run, yet we are based on last years ranking overall #18 versus the pass.
The 2010 season we face 3 of the top five Qb’s based on last year’s stats. They are Manning, Rivers and Schaub. Rivers twice.
The next ten of QB rankings is Rothleisberger, and Orton.
The balance of the teams have either questionable QB play, or run first teams. Which is Tenn,SF, Dolphins,Jaguars. K.C. and Arizona are new system offenses or new QB.
The Raider schedule is pretty balanced, I believe if they can stop the run, the chances seem to be left for most teams having to pass and this is our strength.
I bring this up due to the comments of Nnamdi, moving around to take away the first option of each team’s offense as the WR.

Repubs represent the richest of the rich. All the other controls they use on you like “He’s a commie” or “They want your guns” or “abortion issues” are all designed to divide and distract while they make the rich even richer.
WAKE UP yourself D bag. The restof us are tired aof paying for your ignorance.
Go Raiders and Ufck politics right now.

Sign Torry holt today!!! Yes he is over the hill, but unlike T.O he is a good team guy. and he can teach our young guys how to get it done. DHB could especially benefit from working with a guy that may one day be in canton.
***************************
Wake-up Mistic. Holt is toast. He knee was blown out and he’s on his way to he operating room. Kikely, his career is done. S. Corkran should rewrite his piece to reflect what he should have already known. Talk about being out of touch when it’s your job.
August 19th, 2010 at 1:47 pm
But I believe that McFadden can put up the following stats sharing carries with Bush:
820 yards rushing
430 yards receiving
7 rushing TDs
3 receiving TDs

Very nice Lakota.

Yeah Corkran’s smokin pencil shavings again.
Tory Holt?!
Whats he gonna do assistant coach?
Jayzuz just get Rice or Brown outa retirement if you’re going to go that route.
Old an busted.

Nnamdi,
LMAO, I can tell from your response you know what I say is true and you are now lashing out like a small child. Hilarious!
We’ll see if you even show up around here after the November elections.

As much as I wuld like to seee a player n staff like Tory Holt I just don’t think he has much to offer at all on the field. I wanted him to come here as well to help the WR’s, I think he would’ve been worth his weight in gold last year. This year I’d prefer he were on staff as a coach.
August 19th, 2010 at 1:50 pm
It’ll be interesting to see if our O can do anything against the Bears. Wanna see if Henderson can handle Peppers…
Hope Satle’s NOT starting. That guy gets our QBs killed. Never seen anyone with his back to the defensive line so much in my life.

i think those stats are well within reach. especially if Hue uses a 2 RB set, which bush pounds it up the middle, while McFadden runs outside the tackles and is more a recieving back.
think Reggie Bush, only not a D bag

[...] Longtime Oakland Raiders beat writer Steve Corkran suggests that the team will sign veteran receiver Torry Holt at some point this season. Holt is now free after getting an injury settlement from New England. However, he is about to undergo knee surgery and won’t be ready for some time. The suggestion that Oakland will sign Holt is based on the team’s need for a veteran presence at the position and the fact that Oakland’s young receivers are banged up. Both Chaz Schilens and Darrius Heyward-Bey have been rested a lot recently. Schilens has been dealing with a foot injury for a year and Heyward-Bey had a slight hamstring tweak this week. Oakland has some nice talent at receiver but they are all very young players who are all fairly unproven. A veteran hand is needed. That’s why it would have made some sense for Oakland to look into Terrell Owens before he signed with Cincinnati or even Holt before he signed with the Patriots. I’m not sure Holt is the answer at this point. He is a role player anyway, and now that he won’t be ready until after the season starts, I’m not sure it will be worth it. But there are plenty of options. There will be some intriguing receivers who are cut in the next two weeks. I’m sure Oakland will then study the list of available talent. [...]
