Raiders take two days off
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, August 22nd, 2010 at 2:13 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders will take today and Monday off before getting back at it Tuesday for the last three days of training camp in Napa.
Coach Tom Cable will not address the media as a followup to Saturday night’s 32-17 win over the Chicago Bears until Monday on a conference call.
The Raiders have scheduled practices for Tuesday and Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. and a final practice Thursday at 8:30 a.m. before breaking camp.
The team’s Raider Nation Celebration will be Friday at Frank Ogawa Plaza from 4 to 6 p.m. Check the link provided for more details.
The Raiders host the San Francisco 49ers Saturday at 6 p.m., the game which usually involves the most game-planning and playing time for prominent players. Ideally, the Raiders would have Darren McFadden (hamstring) Darrius Heyward-Bey (fatigue) and Chaz Schilens (foot) available for at least a brief appearance.

The 49ers game will be vanilla since they meet again the regular season.
August 22nd, 2010 at 2:30 pm
Seems like I’m the only one who noticed we put back to back victories in the W column. Now this team knows it can win, my 9/6 may go out the window!
August 22nd, 2010 at 2:40 pm
49ers next stop to 23-0!!!
August 22nd, 2010 at 2:41 pm
Dare I say it, but with the way the Defense played last night with out Aso and Sey I am thinking top 10 Defense for oakland this year

The only reason R.Brown makes the team is ST play.
——————————————————-
And not a bad reason at all. Also been pretty solid as a LB. Just kinda small and injury prone.
Goethel makes the 53 man roster! Takes Ekejubiah’s spot.
August 22nd, 2010 at 2:47 pm
I’m East Coast, have to watch at 11pm here, saw 1st half sporatically, danm it!
August 22nd, 2010 at 2:48 pm
Gradkowski and Darius Heyward-Bey will have to play next week.
Gradkowski because his roster spot is in jeapordy…you don’t pay a 3rd string QB $2M.
DHB because the offense is getting used to himm not being on the field….hard to start him in the regular season cold
Schilens either plays next week…or I would recommend sitting him until that foot is 100%…even if that means its week 4 or 5.
Murphy and JLH just need to keep doing working
August 22nd, 2010 at 2:49 pm
Wow…Thomas Howard is a bust…have to send him on the road.
Trevor Scott was a great find.
August 22nd, 2010 at 2:52 pm
Kelly is the biggest surprise, we can use it!
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:06 pm
JWig-agree with post#7.You need ST animals. It wouldn’t surprise me if Goethel becomes the backup at MLB.From the little I have seen him ,he looks pretty good.
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:09 pm
How much is Boller making?
Between Bruce and Boller, they seem to make about the normal combined for a #2 & #3.
You got to think if they were serious about keeping Brennan, they would have the kid get a few series in. If Bruce continues to stay hurt and can’t go against the 49ers, you have to think Brennan would play a majority of the second half.
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:12 pm
J,
Remember Goethel has the ability to go on the PS, and Howard and Sam Williams don’t.
They may just keep one of those two, and put Goethel on the PS, if only for a few weeks than elevate him to the roster.
To say he is a lock is a bit grandiose.
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:18 pm
Boller thinks well on his feet, moves the chains by willing the team down the field, I like his style!
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:22 pm
I agree. Boller is the man. What is going to happen to Colt? Why on earth would they keep 4 QB’s? When will they cut him if they do?
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:24 pm
Practice squad, hopefully, Grads is out til next year, I like these new kids, develope them Al, go all out!
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:24 pm
JFB,
I don’t think a team looks at the combined salary.
If they can save $1.5M, they are going to do it.
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:28 pm
SnB,
Don’t disagree there, but if they are going to save the money, wouldn’t they see what it is they are saving for?
Just funny to me that they would give guys like Bodiford and all these other scrubs who have very little chance of making the team, a whole half out there, and a QB two throws in two weeks who plans on making the team.
Doesn’t make much sense to me. If they plan on keeping Colt, than play the kid!! Hell this O-line went through 3 QB’s last year, better to be safe than sorry.
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:31 pm
Vegas, they are beating up the kids in preseason, saving the cream for the season, IMHO!
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:33 pm
I think it’s selfish to keep him on the practice squad. Colt is better off going to a Canadian team, playing and getting his game back together… then coming back to the NFL.
What do the players do on their days off, like today and tomorrow? Team meetings, etc.?
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:33 pm
These kids are busting it on the field, yes some mistakes, youth, but if we could keep this little nucleous going for a while, watch out NFL>
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:37 pm
JFB,
Don’t think they’ll risk losing Goethel trying to stash him on the practice squad. Pretty likely someone will claim him.
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:38 pm
J wiggle: Can you explain?
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:41 pm
Gentlemen, I have watched the game 4 times now, and currently at half time for the fifth. This is a very special team compared to what we have seen the past 7 years. We are finally turning the corner, and personally, I give all the credit to Tom Cable. Say what you will, he is the head coach of this team, and doing a damn good job of making them believe, and meshing the vets and the rooks. I think our defense will be FING crazy good. Wimbley? WTF can I say about this cat, he played very well. Our whole D played good, and Nam, CJ, and Seymour didn’t play. Wow, things are looking up for the Silver and Black. Before you “Nay Sayers” tell me to put the kool aid down, just let me say I am just keeping it real. Not saying SuperBowl chaps etc… just saying this is a special team, the mystique is coming back.
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:46 pm
St. J, stop teasing us, we still have to wait 4.5 hrs to see the game in it’s entirety, but thanks for the heads up!
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:47 pm
Much respect for Al Davis, and the love he showed Bo Jackson. Per Bo, they haven’t seen each other since the Bills v Cowboys Superbowl in the 90’s, but Bo said Al would call him and his wife at least once a year. Remember, Bo only played for four years. Bo and his family spent the game with Mr. Davis at Soldier field. I love how the Raiders Broadcast Network highlighted Bo, they did a really good job of showing respect and love for a former Raider great. Papa was like a kid in a candy store when Bo was in the booth. A great moment spent with a great Raider.

Sorry bro, let me just say this, you won’t be dissapointed. Pre-season or not, this team is really starting to turn the corner bro. Silver and Black. Oh, one more thing about Bo Jackson, he said on the broadcast to the “Raiders Fans”, “I’m a Raider till I die!!” Gave me the chills…..
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:52 pm
Oh, also showed Bo in the locker room before the game with the players. He said he talked to each and every player. I sure hope you guys get to see the Raiders broadcast.
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:53 pm
I lived it with Bo, know he bleeds black, just like the rest of us, cranking up for the game, all is good!

By the way only 7 players on the practice squad. The majority of the players will be cut outright.
__________________________
Each NFL team may keep up to eight members on its “practice squad” in addition to the 53-member main roster.
They consist mostly of rookies who were cut in training camps and borderline NFL-caliber players. Both rookies and young veterans are eligible for the practice squad. However, a player cannot participate on the practice squad for more than three seasons, or if he has accrued a year of NFL experience (six or more games on a club’s 53-man active roster or official Injured Reserve list.)
If the player was on the active list for fewer than 9 games during their “only Accrued Season(s)”, he maintains his eligibility for the practice squad.
August 22nd, 2010 at 3:59 pm
EVERY player on this squad is playing their azz off, even Swayze Waters the backup kicker punter is playing darn good lol, seriously, that dude is playin some ball. Give it up, and give some credit to Tom Cable.

Hold the Phone… so that means that Colt is not eligible for the practice squad then…
“However, a player cannot participate on the practice squad for more than three seasons, or if he has accrued a year of NFL experience (six or more games on a club’s 53-man active roster or official Injured Reserve list.) ”
he was on the official IR list last year. Ciao Colton… thanks for stopping by Oakland on the way to Canada.
August 22nd, 2010 at 4:12 pm
Mic, Grads is going out IR, there is room to keep him…
August 22nd, 2010 at 4:15 pm
When are they going to announce that Grads is going out IR?
August 22nd, 2010 at 4:18 pm
How did Forte become the story of this game? 1 big run ripped and its all about the Bears? Are you kidding me?
The real runner in this game was Mike Bush, who was conveniently pulled after running all over the Bears – literally! The Raiders pulled Bush after about 2 or 3 series and they finished the rest of the half without him.
August 22nd, 2010 at 4:20 pm
At the last possible moment, Boller has stepped up so well, his recovery and rehab take him to next year, the Raiders keep everything secret. As is this message….lol
August 22nd, 2010 at 4:27 pm
meh… I’ll believe it when I see it. I don’t think he’s going to IR. It’s a groin.. not a broken wrist.
August 22nd, 2010 at 4:32 pm
The coverage of the Raiders suck. NFLN just now ..almost got the story right but of course made it about the Bears first and why they can’t produce then touched on the Raiders almost as if its the other story.
Read the tea leaves man! The Raiders have like 10 sacks in 2 games! And these are sacks by the STARTERS! If they produce at this level all year no team can be productive facing that kind of onslaught!
I hope they can and do.
August 22nd, 2010 at 4:34 pm
Mic, Grads? Definately wrist, this is going to take a while, and hurt while in rehab…
August 22nd, 2010 at 4:37 pm
Terra, we are due to break out, hope to see Jacksons playbook in full, D is going to turn some heads, we need to keep the blitz, keep em off ballanced, life is lookin better as a Raider……..YES!
August 22nd, 2010 at 4:49 pm
‘Sup fellas.
Terrapin
They have 12 sacks in two games.
Man, these guys are going to be fun to watch this year.
Hopefully ,DMac and DHB are back and practicing this week, getting ready for the Whiners. This 3rd preseason game is the biggest tune up for the season.
The thing I like most about this team is that they seem young and hungry. This years squad is comprised of a lot of young guys..rookies and 2nd and 3rd year players who say most of those previous seven years..they don’t have anything to do with me. That mess is in the past. This is a new day dawning.
Gone are a lot of the me first guys and blowhards, like Sapp and MeAngelo Hall. The paycheck collectors. Replaced by young guys with character and work ethic. High energy, high motor guys like Shaughnessy, Houston, McClain, Mitchell et al.
They could be pretty good sooner, rather than later. And they might be good for awhile.
August 22nd, 2010 at 4:54 pm
Sorry I must be confused. At any rate, we don’t need 4 QBs on the team.
August 22nd, 2010 at 4:56 pm
Is it possible for us to break that Sack Record for team sacks this year? The Record is 72 sacks. That is 4.5 sacks a game over 16 games.
We play San Diego, Denver, and KC twice which all have O-line issues right now. This could be 25+ sacks right there.
August 22nd, 2010 at 5:02 pm
Anyone watching the niners game?
San Fran is another team I am thinking can take their division this year. AZ is gonna be mediocre with Leinert, Pete Carol’s seahawks are gonna be good but I think San Fran can overtake them, then theres the lowly rams.
How awesome would it be to see both bay area teams back in the playoffs where they belong.
With a little luck with destroy San Fran in Dallas come Feb.
August 22nd, 2010 at 5:02 pm
Gonna get a look at those same niners tonight, if I can stomach the Favre-palooza by the media. Overkill.

August 22nd, 2010 at 5:17 pm
Glad somebody is giving Cable some props. He gets lambasted in here on a regular basis, but if you’ve been paying attention for the last two-plus years it becomes quite evident that he’s had this plan all along. He’s been talking about getting the right kind of player and the right kind of effort since he took over this team, and as St. Jimmy so astutely pointed out, that’s exactly what’s happening.
Call him the “timeout coordinator”, say he’s just a puppet, whatever. Things are happening exactly as he said they would and wanted and it’s not a coincidence.
August 22nd, 2010 at 5:21 pm
Teach, a HC has to delegate, how much the coaches have to say go’es a lot to what is happening to this team, even with the Al factor. I say open it up, let er rip, let the kids have fun. Cable can do his thing, Al his, but let the coaches do their job.
August 22nd, 2010 at 5:29 pm
So far, so good 860. I don’t know this for sure so obviously it’s just specualtion, but you know Al looks at game tape and maybe he is giving Marshall some leeway this year based on what he saw against the Eagles and some others, relative to the results we got with the straight-up scheme that he seems to prefer.
I have to believe that he’s happy with the defense thus far. He is after all famous for his “The quarterback must go down, and he must go down hard” philosophy. No shortage of sacks and pressures, and with the starting DBs in there it should be even tougher for opposing offenses.
We can only hope that, as you say, the coaches get to coach.
August 22nd, 2010 at 5:30 pm
Nice post, Teach. My sentiments exactly.
Niners looking pretty damn impressive on both sides of the ball. Next Sat. night should be interesting. Hopefully The Black Hole is rocking.
August 22nd, 2010 at 5:32 pm
Thanks, Buckeye. Good to see you back in here.
Hopefully things worked out ok for you?
August 22nd, 2010 at 5:40 pm
Teach, agree, but we are still man to man every down, and that has it’s cracks also, as we saw last night, one missed coverage and bang, but hopefully we learned something? I’m liking this young team, we’re going somewhere this year, Playoffs?
August 22nd, 2010 at 6:00 pm
Yeah, I hear you 860, but that WAS against a rookie. Doubt the man-to-man thing is going anywhere soon but I really like the versatility that we have with the front 7. If Marshall can use that to exploit some mismatches and keep the pressure on with some well-timed blitzing it should take some pressure off of the back end.
I just hope that what seems to be a more attacking style can be tempered with some gap discipline and guys can resist the temptaion to overrun things. I thought that the Bears, once Martz sort of got an idea what we were doing, exploited that tendency a littl bit last night. It’s early, though. Pretty sure if I noticed it the coaches did, too. lol

Any word on Satele’s injury out there? I can’t find anything on Corkran’s game notes, nada. Is it considered serious?
Probably miss the rest of preseason minimum.
I know alot of you guys can’t stand the guy., and think he is the weak link on the line.
I know that jailbreak sack he and Coop gave up vs Dallas looked like a complete cluster-you-know-what, but damn. He is the starter. If the Raiders had anybody they thought was better, they’d be in there.
Satele defenitely has some room for improvement, but I think he takes a little more grief in here than is warranted sometimes. He seems to be the whipping boy flavor of the month.
I hope he is back soon. At least until Veldheer is ready. Morris sure as hell isn’t the answer.
August 22nd, 2010 at 6:44 pm
Buck, he needs to be replaced, is NOT ready, not NFL caliber, sorry, we lost our center, nothing in sight for this high calibre team as I see it. This is going to haunt us for a long time, IMO.

Watching Niners-Vikes. Nate Davis leads his tight end right into the safety over the middle and nearly gets the guy killed and all Collinsworth can say is what a great throw it was and how impressed he is with Davis.
Yeesh.
August 22nd, 2010 at 7:20 pm
Stay with it, Teach! lol
August 22nd, 2010 at 7:26 pm
Haha. I thought Collinsworth was going to rip Davis a new one for that pass, being a former receiver.
Short memory, apparently. (Maybe he got led over the middle a few too many times himself
)
August 22nd, 2010 at 7:33 pm
Teach, not watching it, Raiders in 30 min’s, East Coast sucks, and I started my VAC yesterday, ole ladie is gonna be pizzed, so what!

Thank you God for a better Raider team and an entire NFL season on HD television.
August 22nd, 2010 at 7:50 pm
Enjoy the game, but the only thing that burned me was that ridiculous Matt Forte 89 yd. run. I do not want to see that again. Still trying to figure how they let Matt freakin’ Forte shred ‘em like that. Outside of that, it is a great showcase of the Raider D.
August 22nd, 2010 at 7:52 pm
What is also cool is that the Bears D on the first drive were waving their hands around trying to pump up the crowd and acting all cocky thinking they’re making Raiders implode etc. and all Campbell does is take ‘em 81 yds. down the field for a first series score. Bears are like “what the hell just happened”?

August 22nd, 2010 at 8:45 pm
If the o-line can pass protect…Campbell and this offense will do ok. The INT was due to Campbell getting hit as he threw…that would have benn a wide open TD.
August 22nd, 2010 at 8:48 pm
Yo SnB,
I saw that. The rusher split satele and gallery to force the bad throw. Better now then later, hopefully they can fix that.

Since I know the punk doesn’t have a car. He can take BART there. He said no, because it’s too white and doesn’t want to deal with cops. So I told him he could meet me in one of Sac’s diverse areas, like OP or South Side, he said no. It’s Raiders parking lot, or nothing. Because he’s scared and wants to make sure he’s got a constituency there to help him when things get ugly. You want to put your money on that? I’ll take you up on it.
August 22nd, 2010 at 11:46 pm
MRS-
I never said I was a DAVIS guy. That’s you making that assumption because you resort to name calling and childish put downs when you can’t intelligently prove your point.
I said that I believe that the Raiders will be 8-8 this year.
It’s a logical opinion based on the fact that we won 5 games last year with the personnel we had despite Davis’ imprint.
So IT IS possible to win even with Al Davis meddling.
Now you take the fact that Jamarcus is gone, our defense is much more talented, and we don’t have Cable over extending himself this season, I believe that it is LOGICAL that we can win more games than last year even with Al Davis’ “meddling.”
Now that is called a logical, sound, argument, based on fact and reasonable inference.
Can you wrap your brain around that RMS, or do I need to say it even simpler for you?

Its superbowl time every year! no matter what the faith has to be there. Otherwise failure is the only option. If you wanna tell it like it is go ahead I know how it is. But no matter what the faith will be there because the Saints were not the best team in the NFL last season. They were damn good though which is where this team is heading
August 23rd, 2010 at 12:41 am
I was at the game Saturday night, and now I’m watching it again off my DVR.
My thoughts? The offensive line is going to get Jason Campbell killed.
Mario Henderson and Langston Walker are poor run blockers, and collapse under any pressure whatsoever. Carlisle and Satele have a bad habit of immediately getting pushed back three yards at the snap. At this point looks like Gallery is the only starting offensive lineman earning his paycheck out there.
Veldheer is definitely going to need more time to develop, which is to be expected. But he got abused by Julius Peppers on Saturday.
At the very least they should sign Kevin Mawae, and make a trade for Jared Gaither as soon as he’s healthy. Maybe even give Bruce Campbell some time with the first team at RG next week, and see if there’s any noticeable improvement. Though he’s probably no farther along than Veldheer, it could be worthwhile to get his feet wet now in case Carlisle’s play doesn’t improve down the stretch.

the Saints were not the best team in the NFL last season.
………
Of course not. The Raiders were. The refs just screwed them, right? Saints just won the Super Bowl..which is the object of the game. The Super Bowl defines who is the BEST, period. That’s what the playoff system is for. but I know a lot of teams that didn’t win it like to say that the team that did isn’t the best. It’s common. And, THAT is haterism, not me making fun of Al. What you said about the Saints is PRECISELY hating.

Raiders led by Linebacker Wimbley Maul The Bears
By Pat Cowan • on August 22, 2010
The Oakland Raiders left home bound for Chicago to take on the Bears in their second preseason game. Both teams first string offenses struggled in their first games, but the Raiders managed to walk away with a win as their depth of talent has looks to be a strength going into the season. The Raiders would prevail in this one two anchoring a 32-17 victory, as the Raiders made statements in all three phases of the game.
The Raiders got the ball and it immediately became apparent that their offense had made adjustments since their anemic showing a week before. In 10 play – 81 yard drive, quarterback Jason Campbell methodically marched the offense down the field going 5/5 on pass attempts and finishing with a quarterback sneak into the endzone. Campbell would finish the night with 170 yards and an int.
When Bears Quarterback, Jay Cutler started the drive for his offense, the Raiders took no time to intoduce one of their newest acquisitions this year in Kamerion Wimbley. Matter of fact Wimbley intoduced himself to Cutler five times and once to his backup. Wimbleys six sacks brings the Raiders total to twelve in two games.
A couple of miscues and costly turnovers by the Raiders kept the Bears in the game. The Raiders allowed Matt Forte to run for an 89 yard touchdown in the second quarter. Forte ran through the A-gap, a gap that Seymour would have been defending if he had been playing. Also Rookie, Rolondo Mclain over pursued, leaving the hole with no linebacker support. The last line of defense was Safety Michael Huff, who looked just plain silly being frozen in his shoes by a simple juke from Forte.
Another dagger came when a poorly thrown pass by Campbell was intercepted and returned 50 yards setting up a bears touchdown. Campbell threw the ball over the wrong shoulder of Tight End, Zach Miller who had more than a step on the defender to the outside. Another turnover came, when Chris Morris replaced starting Center Samson Satele and snapped it wide to an unsuspecting Campbell.
A blown coverage on a fourth and goal from the 22 yard line gave them the lead before the half.
In the second half, quarterback Kyle Boller proved once again that he is more than up to the challenge to become the backup to Campbell. Boller would finish, 7/9 passing for 55 yards and scored on a 2 yard scamper.
Special teams was the story of the night as the Bears could do very little right. Bad snaps cost them an extra point as well as a field goal. A muffed punt was recovered in the endzone by Raiders special team standout Slade Norris, who wasn’t done for the night as he blocked a punt late in the fourth quarter. The ball bounced out of the endzone giving the Raiders two more points on the scoreboard.
The ground game struggled in the first half for the Raiders, entrenched starter Michael Bush carried 8 times, yielding only 26 yards. Bush also had a catch and run for 24 yards in the first series. Michael Bennett got things going in the second half toting the rock 15 times for 64 yards.
The offensive line did well early on, but faded as the half went on.Early on, the Raiders used offensive gaurd Robert Gallery’s run blocking skills by pull blocking into different holes as they continue to alternate from a zone blocking scheme and powerblocking. Thus far it seems that powerblocking is winning most of the battles at the line. The Bears newest addition Julius Peppers, who is notorious for taking games off and being stellar in others, came to play against the Silver and Black. Offensive Tackle Mario Henderson, held Peppersin check most of the night. Peppers did have one sack when he pushed his way around Raider rookie Jason Veldheer.
Up next it’s the annual Battle of the Bay as the Raiders host the San Fransisco 49ers.

Remember a couple years ago when Langston Walker was cut loose because he was too stupid to remember a snap count and every time we had a third and short situation, he would turn it into a third and long? And now he’s back. And starting? Soon there will be a lot of guys cut from other teams as they trim down their rosters and I would bet that a lot of guys who weren’t good enough to make it onto a good OL on another team will be better than some of the scrubs we have playing on our OL. Langston Walker? Seriously?

I was just looking back through some of these posts and realized if you replaced AL Davis’ name with Darth Vader and Tom Cable’s name with Luke Skywalker, the true juvenility of thses conversations comes shining through. Some of you guys bicker like a couple of twelve year olds playing with your light sabers.
August 23rd, 2010 at 6:26 am
With John Fox’s seat “no longer hot” because of Jerry Richardson’s approach to his contract status, Tom Cable may sit on the hottest seat in football. [Pretty much] every Raiders head coach occupies a high place on the hot seat list. Cable got the job only after Lane Kiffin summarily was dumped early in the 2008 season, and then the Raiders had Cable twist in the wind after the campaign before deciding whether he’d be back for 2009. … He’ll continue to occupy a status that will at times feel like day-to-day employment, especially with Hue Jackson now on board as offensive coordinator. If/when owner Al Davis finally tires of Cable, Jackson will be in position to become the next guy on a chair that’s perched over an eternal flame.

2-0 and he’s on the hot seat?

August 23rd, 2010 at 7:10 am
I watched the replay the last night, stayed away from all Raider news since saturday morning so I could see them by myself.
I came away very impressed, I figured they had played a decent game but didn’t expect to see them dominate the way they did, I know it’s only pre-season, but it’s a sample of how the team is preparing and there’s a reason they play these games.
- OL: First of all, the Bears defense features 2 of the top 10 DL in the game in Tommie Harris and Julius Peppers, that’s a tough matchup for any OL and I’d say we did fine, Mario Henderson didn’t dominate Peppers but he was able to contain him and Harris did not make any big plays, the Bears got some pressure on Campbell but that was to be expected when facing a unit featuring those two.
- Defense: It’s been said before, but you can’t understimate the fact that we played without our best DL and top two CB’s, it didn’t matter, the defense played a really good game.
We saw Stanford Routt on a Corner blitz, which bodes well for the variables we all want to see.
We saw Wimbley covering one of the toughest matchups for a LB out there in Greg Olsen, a 6′5 255 TE with 4.5 speed who caught 60 balls and 8 TD’s last season.
We saw Tommy Kelly making a difference without Seymour next to him.
We also saw that 89 yard TD run, a play where there was some confusion prior to the snap, Wimbley didn’t know where to line up and McClain had to pull him over to where he was supposed to line up, not an excuse but they were clearly not on the same page on that play.
Jason Campbell made some plays, avoided a couple of sacks and showed he’s capable of leading this offense, he should have taken the sack on that INT but he’s not a perfect QB, he’ll make some bad decisions but overall he should be fine, IMO.
Gotta love the screens, they seem to have nailed that part of the offense already, I’d like to see more rollouts from Campbell, he can really move.
I’m sure I’m forgetting a couple of things but overall, a nice showing by the Raiders and the best thing about it is that the they are starting to build some confidence, a key part of the game.
Later.

ONE friggin play where MULTIPLE people looked bad. Although I really thought Houston was being held on the play, and McClain was so worried about taking out the pulling C he over ran the play.
Huff didn’t look good on that ONE play though.
August 23rd, 2010 at 8:04 am
Someone needs to explain the angle of pursuit to Mr Huff… I was more concerned about that one play than excited about everything else. We absolutely cant win giving up plays like that.

Who was manning the A-Gap in Seymour’s absence?
August 23rd, 2010 at 8:07 am
We are so far ahead of where we were last year with our CB situation. Instead of converted WR John Holland playing dime corner, we actually have 2 rookies that look solid. Ware made one mistake out there, but made several plays, including STs.
August 23rd, 2010 at 8:07 am
Huff came from centerfield runnign towards the ball carrier and Forte cut back, where Huff came from and left the entire defense in his tracks … happens all the time. good vision by Forte and blocking by the Bears O-Line
if YOU PEOPLE are expecting Huff to change directions at full speed AND make that tackle you’re crazy and you’ve probably never played football in your life – period
August 23rd, 2010 at 8:08 am
Stanford Routt played well. His problem has been consistency. Can he do it week in and week out.
I remember the 1st K.C game last year and Nnamdi went out briefly for an injury and then Matt Cassle and Bowe immediately victimized Routt on a deep pass.
Routt has always had the tools…can he put it together and get consistency.
I still see Chris Johnson Starting here

August 23rd, 2010 at 8:12 am
Sorry Rock I disagree. I HAVE played football. Im telling you Huff broke a cardinal rule. He ran straight at his man, which was why that simple inside step by forte evaded him. Its called the Angle of Pursuit. He did not follow it. It was a bad play by Huff and you are being ridiculous in defending him. It wasnt his fault that Forte got past the front 7, it WAS his fault that he got burned.
August 23rd, 2010 at 8:12 am

O,
The Henderson situation is surprising to me, to be honest. I thought he would at least be the #3 DT in the rotation. I couldn’t believe we saw William Joseph in before Henderson.
With that said, I guess Waufle wants some guys in there who can actually move. Henderson had ZERO movement despite him clogging up his spot. And we’re talking against backup players here. He would get off the ball and just stay engaged around the LOS. If the ball didn’t come right at him, he was no wher near the play.
I don’t know man. Hard to read.

I’m a Skins fan. How about a Haynesworth-Seymour trade? Fat Albert is a pain in the butt but one of the 2-3 best tackles in the league in a 4-3. Seymour would rather come back east and you’ll probably lose him next year anyway.
August 23rd, 2010 at 8:36 am
on the Forte TD run, at least one of two things happened
A. McClain messed up
B. the D-Line should have done a better job up front
which is it?
August 23rd, 2010 at 8:40 am
How about a Haynesworth-Seymour trade?
***
I would have made this trade a while back. I even mentioned it
now that Houston is a solid starting DE and Seymour is taking on a leadership role i’m not so sure we need Fat Albert
it all depends on the play of TK and the health of John Henderson
on paper, this looks good:
UT: Kelly, Bryant
NT: Haynesworth, Henderson
August 23rd, 2010 at 8:42 am
-4 seasons = 4 INTS!!!
-Tackling is not his strength.
Be was on the trade block, and Cable started Eugene over him in 08.
Those are the Facts.
I still think Huff is a great talent. The man can cover, so let his strength, and put him in position to make plays.
Let him play NB, CB, and FS on passing downs only. He will get us 5/6 INTs EASY. He has good hands.

——————————————————
Well I was actually looking at the play by play recap of the Jags/Miami game to see what your boy Kirk was up to. Made a tackle after a 5 yds run by the RB, another tackle on Brandon Marshall after a 1st down catch, and one last tackle on Williams after a 1st down catch.
Sounds more like the Kirk we all know, lol.
And his defense was down 24-12 at the half by the way.

I’m a Skins fan. How about a Haynesworth-Seymour trade?
——————————————————-
No thanks!
We can do John Henderson and a future #4, MAYBE.
August 23rd, 2010 at 8:47 am
RR,
Yes he is!!
I was watching the skins game, and Albert was being pushed around by 2nd & 3rd unit players.
Fat Albert plays ONLY when he wants to. We need Seymour. He is our UT, so now we need to add a DT (if TK doesn’t play well).
August 23rd, 2010 at 8:47 am
It would be a tough task for any safety to just make that tackle on Forte, but you have to make him move his feet a little, slow down from top speed, and maybe get a hand on him, so someone from behind can drag him down and leave it at a 25 yard gain, and not an 89 yard play.
I doubt Huff would tell you he can’t make that play or anything different from what I said.

I’m a Skins fan. How about a Haynesworth-Seymour trade? Fat Albert is a pain in the butt but one of the 2-3 best tackles in the league in a 4-3. Seymour would rather come back east and you’ll probably lose him next year anyway.
===================================================
I with Rockstar…I would have made the trade earlier because I wasn’t sure if Seymour was committed to being here.
But now, I would pass…Seymour riding in on the bus with the rookies and his taking leadership of this defense and responsibility makes him the perfect guy.
Haymesworth has health problems to boot. Nope…you all can keep him

McClain was taken out by a 6 time Pro Bowl center who may be in the HOF when his career is over.
Tough to ask a guy who has played 35 or so preseason snaps to win that advantage.
Kruetz has made a helluva living, and a name for himself taking out MLB’s.
McClain did overrun it a tad, but to think he is going to maul Olin Kruetz and make the tackle at the LOS would to think he is Dick Butkus 2.0 at 21 years old!!

J Wiggle,
This team has to fix that stuff. Looked like last year. Those big plays on defense has killed this team in the past. Last year people were saying “this is a good defense if not for the big plays”…those plays count. Give up a 20 yarder here and there…but these long-azz runs have to go.

I doubt Huff would tell you he can’t make that play or anything different from what I said.

Forte shook Huff up, plain and simple. Too bad he ended up in a one on one situation in the open field with a decent RB. If that same scenario happens week 1, CJ2K score as well. Even if the S is Branch or Mitchell.

SnB,
I agree with your take on the “Big Plays”. With all the good feeling about our defense, we were still down 14-13 at the half!
Although I will concede that I don’t see those 2 plays happening often. Houston won’t be getting doubled on that play with Seymour next to him, and I don’t see Wimbley losing a battle with the TE too often. We may have some “rookie moments” from McClain though.
Also don’t see Ware being in when it counts, so no worries.

Defensive tackle Tommy Kelly took it down a notch, mentioning the 89-yard touchdown run the Raiders gave up to Matt Forte.
“Yeah, we have the train pointed in the right direction,” he said. “We have to realize it is preseason, take it for what it is worth. We need to try and get better. I’m disappointed we gave up that big run.”
The Raiders’ run defense that had looked good against Dallas a week ago was a step slow all night. Chicago ran for 141 yards on 11 carries in the first half and 174 yards on 25 carries in the game.
“A win again is good,” Cable said, “but not very pleased with the overall sloppiness of the game.”

Good Morning Raider Nation!!
August 23rd, 2010 at 9:31 am
RAIDER NATION GOOD MORNING!!
Well, well, well, the plan is starting to show it’s true picture.
Let me begin.
First, but before I start of what my lil old eyes saw. Why are you all stressing over the missed play by Huff or McClain. I honestly believe, McClain doesn’t make that mistake again. Why, he will learn that his best play was to go down the line in a lateral stride and meet the RB at the point of attack, instead of closing the gap.
The next impressive player on that play was Tyvon Branch. Did you see him go in that play, take out the block and then turn around and almost catch Forte. That was some impressive speed, having passed Huff along the way. Either Huff was slowing down or Branch has another gear in those legs. Watch the replay and see number 33 just come out of know where, in pursuit.
Screen plays are hard to develop. Raiders have not screened well in a long time. This will hold the LB’S and lineman in most yardage situations, that was good timed screens.
Jacoby Ford is not a slot guy. Some of you can disagree with me. Ford played the “X” WR in the game. He will back up DHB, and JLH in that order. Schilens (if he ever gets healthy) is the starting “Z” WR and his back up is Murphy.
The “Y” WR has been a combination of Murphy, Figurs, Watkins, Miller, yes Zach Miller.
The offense will based on the set of downs and personnel will have no main “Y” WR all the time.
Look for Meyers in the game, the same time as Miller for pass protection and run blocking when Miller is the “Y” receiver.
Couple of notes about Miller. The interception by JC, was a good defensive play, the lineman for the Bears hit his hand, and the direction of the ball lost its accuracy. With more time like a nano second, JC throws the ball inside of the coverage and it’s a TD.
The next almost TD, to Miller was when JC threw the ball to Watkins in the corner of the end zone, at the last second Miller breaks towards the post and again is open, this time with a safety on him. JC needs to trust Miller and throw the ball to the inside and he will be open to catch another TD. The throw to Watkins was high and to much coverage for a completion. I’m pretty sure on film review, he will see the play differently.
We out played Chicago’s number one’s big time. I don’t think it was any lack on Chicago’s part, they had effort, we just were faster, quicker and more athletic.
I believe Ware has some potential. I just don’t know if he will make the final 53 man roster. I see McFadden was behind Ware, in the chart of players who played in certain situations. McFadden seems perfect for the slot, quicker than Ware. I just know when the season starts one of those two will be in many packages, whether the nickle or dime. They need some more work.
Goethel, is interesting, back up Mike right now. Has more speed than many of us thought. I hope they work him eventually on the SAM side also, he will be able to cover tight ends as soon as he develops the understanding of a passing game, meaning identifying routes.
Bush, needs a fullback lead. I’v said this many times. I’m real concerned we have no fullback to lead. Daniels, is definetly practice squad player, he needs a year of seasoning to maybe be, the fullback next year.
The improvement was there. You guys who were worried about no blitzing, push that aside, we will blitz in certain situations. The last two games they have zone blitzed, with Bryant the lineman backing out in pass coverage, as well as corner blitz and the WILL lineback blitz.
Keep it going, good start, just keep on improving. Long season. Remember it’s how you finish not start.
Keep the faith.

Is Darren McFadden Turning Into JaMarcus Russell?

Gregory Shamus/Getty Images No, I don’t expect Darren McFadden to put on a bunch of weight and start sippin’ sizzurp. He is, however, starting to enter Bust Territory. In two seasons, McFadden has run for a mere 856 yards with five rushing touchdowns.
He has salvaged some of his reputation by adding 530 receiving yards, but 1,386 total yards should be a single-season output for a guy that ran for 4,590 yards (nearly 5,000 total yards) with 41 touchdowns (plus two receiving and seven passing) and became the fourth pick of the 2008 draft.
McFadden missed his second straight preseason game because of a hamstring injury, which is troubling for a guy that has missed seven games in his first two seasons. Not only is he missing the games, but he’s missing practice, which could cement Michael Bush as the Raiders’ primary ball carrier.
Bush was the better runner last year, averaging 4.8 yards on 123 carries compared to McFadden’s 3.4 average on 104 carries. McFadden is better at catching the ball out of the backfield, but if he’s not careful, he could find himself relegated to third-down duty. Bush’s size (6’1″, 245 lbs) already makes him a better fit for the tough carries near the goal line. Rock Cartwright could also get some of those carries.
Despite the lofty expectations everybody have for McFadden, he has only topped 74 rushing yards once in his career, and that came in Week Two of his rookie season. Only twice in his career has he had more than 14 carries. It’s like they don’t even know how to use him.
Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images For some reason McFadden has yet to attempt a pass in the NFL. Correct me if I’m wrong, but he was running the WildHog formation in college, so why not play to his strengths? Makes no sense to me, especially when your starting quarterback’s passer rating and completion percentage were hovering around 50.
I would love to see McFadden get his act together, but my optimism is wearing thin. That sentiment isn’t shared with fellow fantasy footballers though, as his ADP is 78 (32nd RB). It’s actually a few spots higher than Michael Bush (83, 34). I’m sorry, but the sixth pick of the seventh round needs to offer a little more certainty for my tastes.
Currently I have McFadden as my 43rd ranked running back (click to see my rankings), but that number will go even lower if he doesn’t get his act together. Plus people will start using air quotes when they call him “Run” DMC.
What are your thoughts on Darren McFadden?

August 23rd, 2010 at 9:41 am
And to think, Raiders left tackle Mario Henderson was actually a little worried about his matchup with All-Pro Bears defensive end Julius Peppers.
Henderson and Oakland’s offensive line pushed around Chicago’s defensive front on a game-opening 81-yard drive. Jason Campbell had time to complete his first five passes for 89 yards. The Raiders actually gained 96 yards due to holding and false start penalties on guard Robert Gallery.
Henderson had a false start penalty himself later, but the left side did a good job on Peppers and defensive tackle Tommie Harris.
“We used Mario and (Jared) Veldheer at left tackle and Gallery at left guard,” Cable said. “The three of them did some nice things. … Certainly, the two guys that are factors for them weren’t.”
Rookie Veldheer manhandled Peppers on his first play in the second quarter. Peppers got his revenge on the next series, turning the corner on Veldheer and knocking the ball out of Campbell’s hands.

I was at the game Saturday night, and now I’m watching it again off my DVR.
My thoughts? The offensive line is going to get Jason Campbell killed.
Mario Henderson and Langston Walker are poor run blockers, and collapse under any pressure whatsoever. After eight years in the league, Langston Walker still can’t figure out the snap count. Carlisle and Satele have a bad habit of immediately getting pushed back three or more yards as soon as the ball is snapped. At this point looks like Gallery is the only starting offensive lineman earning his paycheck out there. In fact, if you watch the game, you’ll notice that Gallery is the only one keeping his man anywhere close to the LOS, with the rest of the offensive line
folding on either side of him.
A legitimate fullback will also help the run game. Should Tony Richardson get released by the Jets, the Raiders need to make a move. He’s a great locker room presence and still plays like he has a lot left in the tank. With him and Marcel Reece on the roster, the Raiders should be in a decent position at fullback.
August 23rd, 2010 at 9:55 am
Did all the people who are saying Veldheer played well actually watched the game? He held his own on some snaps, which is admirable against Julius Peppers. But he’s got a long way to go still. He gave up that sack/fumble, and several other plays could have easily gone the same way if Campbell didn’t start running.
I can see Veldheer being a pretty damned good player eventually, but he has a way to go before being a starting-caliber player in the NFL.
August 23rd, 2010 at 9:56 am
-Our D has no holes and can be as good as any in the league depending on if our O gives us a chance to win
-Jason Cambell was solid. His numbers would have been better if not for dropped Murphy pass and Miller falling down on a route (don’t remember if the Marcel Reece drop was thrown by Jason or Kyle)
-I think it was Veldheer getting burned by Peppers for a sack
-Bruce Cambpell was solid in both run blocking and pass protection
-We need to keep Higgins and Ford, at least one should emerge as the comp should be good for both of them
-Lot of depth, Mcclain, Houston, Walter Mcfadden, Goethel have all made big plays
Vincent Jackson situation will not help San Diego, they’re D is getting old and Merriman is a non-factor, division championship is looking less far fetched

Outside of that 89-yard run the defensive line looked solid again. I know a lot of people are concerned that Rolando McClain got blocked but that’s what happens in the NFL. Sometimes the offensive line wins, and Olin Kreutz has been one hell of a center for the Bears for many years. McClain’s a rookie, but he has a good head on his shoulders. Guaranteed he’ll learn from that and correct his mistakes next time.
It looked like a safety blitz, and Tyvon just got pushed outside. Plus Michael Huff over-pursued the ball carrier, as per usual. Although that’s not the easiest tackle to make one-on-one, that’s why the Raiders selected Huff at #7 in the first round. He’s supposed to be the last line of defense.
August 23rd, 2010 at 10:02 am
Huff cant tackle to save his life. How do you think Schweigert would have fared on that one? Broken ankles perhaps?

I’m still wondering if A.J. Smith would even accept a bid for Marcus McNeil by the Raiders. If he can be snagged for a 2nd round pick, it would be worthwhile. Even if the Raiders draft offensive line help with that pick next season, there’s no guarantee he’d be a day one contributor like McNeil would.
August 23rd, 2010 at 10:05 am
Some thoughts on Sat nite’s game and Jason Campbell’s play.
I missed the beginning of this game and started watching with the score already 10-0 Raids, so I guess I missed Campbell’s best play.
What I did see from him was somewhat less than inspiring.
Overall I liked JC’s pocket presence and liked the way he moved to avoid the pass rush. He’s more mobile than I thought and I liked the way he ran for a first down and knew just where the sticks were to get another series of downs.
What I didn’t like was his accuracy throwing upfield when on the move and under duress. On one play he scrambled forward and didn’t seem aware whether he had passed the line of scrimmage, didn’t seem to know whether he wanted to pass or not or where he was going to go if he did throw it. Very indecisive and ultimately made a poor choice.
With the state of our OL it’s a safe assumption that JC is going to be under alot of pressure. He’s going to need to make things happen with his feet, make smart decisions and show an ability to throw accurately on the move.
I’m still very concerned about his ability to throw accurate intermediate and long passes. He throws a great short pass and I can’t remember a Raider team running screens so effectively. I can readily see why he had a very good completion percentage as a Skin. If he can throw an accurate intermediate pass, the Raids should be able to gain chunks of yardage, score some points and that’s going to be the key to this season.
There’s little doubt in my mind that we’re going to be very solid on defense. Special teams will be fine. Kicking game one of the best in the NFL.
It’s going to come down to whether Campbell can show he’s a complete QB. A QB capable of overcoming a very questionable OL and an inexperienced, although talented, WR corps.
Can he make it happen ? I don’t know. My gut feeling is he’s not the long term solution at QB.
But it’s sure nice to feel we have a chance after enduring JaMoron.

doubtful, that’d make him ANOTHER 1st round bust
However – he is the 2nd best cover man on the team and I’m fairly certain he’ll make the Pro Bowl this year if the pass rush continues to wreak havoc on opposing QB’s

The free safety in the Cover 0/Cover 1/One-deep safety defensive scheme is the last line of defense. The idea is that you stack the box with eight defenders to stop the run, and that anyone who somehow gets past them gets cleaned up by the FS.
That free safety has to be a center fielder who not only has ball skills, but can tackle. Huff has neither. He doesn’t have to lay the wood on every hit, but he should be able to wrap up the ball carrier and get him down before he breaks free for a touchdown.

Only twice in his career has he had more than 14 carries. It’s like they don’t even know how to use him.

In the first 3 games of last season, Darren had 41 carries (1 short of averaging 14 a game) for 148 yards (about 3.2 ypc) and 4 fumbles!!!
He is right we don’t know how to use him. We are giving him way too many carries.

Well, everyone else can have their takes I suppose. But I saw Jared Veldheer with his back right up against Jason Campbell on all but a few of the snaps he played with the first team. Luckily, Jason Campbell can use his feet and has better pocket awareness than you-know-who.

Huff and Pro Bowl do not belong in the same sentence.
August 23rd, 2010 at 10:20 am
TCMA: Huff is only 1 of 11 guys who didn’t stop Matt Forte on that play
as pointed out earlier, McClain & Wimbley were probably the most to blame. Plus whatever DT was subbing for Richard Seymour (responsible for the A gap)
August 23rd, 2010 at 10:23 am
Watched the play last night. Bryant was in for Seymour. He got taken out by Roberto Garza. Olsen blocked Wimbley. Houston got double-teamed. Kreutz blocked McClain. Branch got pushed to the outside by either Manumaleuna or a receiver (can’t remember).
August 23rd, 2010 at 10:24 am
Put me down as someone who didn’t think Veldheer showed that well.
He got completely abused by Peppers on one play, and mainly held on for dear life the rest of the time.
Mario was light-years better.
Only way Veldheer is starting is maybe at C, and I look forward to him getting some run there this weekend.

The Minnesota Vikings are on the verge of reuniting two of their former division rivals from Green Bay.
Javon Walker should be a long shot to make the Vikings, but if Minnesota is counting on anything from the receiver the team might have more worries at the position than thought, Kevin Seifert writes. Blog
Less than a week after former Packers quarterback Brett Favre decided to return for another season in Minnesota, the Vikings are planning on signing former Packers wide receiver Javon Walker on Monday, a source close to the situation told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
Walker experienced his greatest success with Favre as his quarterback and Minnesota is hoping for more of the same.
Walker, whose only Pro Bowl season came in 2004 with the Packers when Favre was his quarterback, hasn’t had a 1,000-yard receiving season since 2006 when he was with the Denver Broncos.
Walker, however, clashed with Favre before he left the Packers in a trade after the 2005 season. Favre torched Walker for skipping the Green Bay Packers’ 2005 minicamp. Walker was seeking a new contract at the time.
A year later, Walker asked the Packers to trade him in part because of Favre’s comments. The Broncos acquired Walker from Green Bay for a second-round pick in the 2006 draft.
Denver cut Walker after the 2007 season because he had major problems with his knees and lost his ability to separate from defenders. The Oakland Raiders, however, gave him a six-year, $55 million deal with $16 million in guaranteed money.
Oakland released Walker this offseason after two unproductive seasons with the team.

TCMA: swap Desmond Bryant for Seymour or Henderson
does Forte still go untouched for 8-12 yards before Huff tries to close in?
August 23rd, 2010 at 10:27 am
Mario was marginally better than Veldheer, definitely. Some plays he was pretty impressive. Others he had lapses in concentration.
One thing both Henderson and Veldheer did several times last night is they let Peppers make a move to the outside and then beat them to the inside, driving Campbell from the pocket.
That said, Veldheer had impressive moments too. Obviously he has a ways to go, but next season, and perhaps even has the season goes on, I see him becoming a solid contributor. Kid’s got a lot to learn first.
August 23rd, 2010 at 10:30 am
TCMA: swap Desmond Bryant for Seymour or Henderson
does Forte still go untouched for 8-12 yards before Huff tries to close in?
—————-
Maybe, maybe not. From that position, whoever it was would have to penetrate the line almost immediately and get Forte in the backfield to stop that play. The blockers were going off right tackle, so it would have been up to Kelly, Houston, McClain, Wimbley, and Branch if the play was going to be stopped for a minimal gain.
August 23rd, 2010 at 10:34 am
IMO, It was just a well-executed run by the Bears, they got a pro bowl center on a rookie MLB, got away with a slight hold by the TE and Forte made his man wiff.
Really, the only shot was to have Huff slow down Forte and cause it to be a 25 yard instead of an 89 yard run.
Debating what would happen with this DT or that is pointless.
August 23rd, 2010 at 10:36 am
it would have been up to Kelly, Houston, McClain, Wimbley, and Branch if the play was going to be stopped for a minimal gain.
***
TCMA: my point exactly
you named 5 guys more responsible than Huff
if you’re trying to eliminate “big plays” against the run on D, you need to stop them with the front seven, 5 yards beyond or behind the LOS – not blame the free safety because it looks like a 1-on-1 matchup on the highlite reel!
August 23rd, 2010 at 10:37 am
Rockster please stop. Huff really isn’t that good bro.
August 23rd, 2010 at 10:38 am
Yeah really all I’m disappointed about on that play is that Huff wasn’t able to stop it from being a touchdown. It would have been a 20-yard run or more anyway because the Bears blocked well (one of the two or three times their starting offensive line actually came through), but Forte made Huff look downright silly.
August 23rd, 2010 at 10:39 am
Anyone think there’s a chance Huff gets traded or cut if there’s no market for him ?
How much $$$ do the Raids save if they dump him ?
I seem to recall Al inferring that Huff was an Art Shell draft pick. Al might not be too enamored with Huff.
The way Forte blew past him and was pulling away should dispel any notions that Huff has the speed to move to corner.
Wouldn’t be surprised at all if Hiram Eugene is on the opening day roster and Huff is history.
August 23rd, 2010 at 10:39 am
I think it’s safe to say we finally have an NFL caliber offense. Not great but middle of the road. Too many 3rd and long IMO. Looking forward to the season. Later.
August 23rd, 2010 at 10:41 am
The only Raiders tidbit in Peter King’s MMQB:
. Kamerion Wimbley’s four sacks in the first half at Chicago on Saturday night mean one of two things: The Bears are in huge trouble on the offensive line, or the Raiders got a steal when they dealt a third-round pick to Cleveland for Wimbley. Or maybe both.
August 23rd, 2010 at 10:41 am
if you’re trying to eliminate “big plays”
————
You can’t eliminate every big play. But you sure can stop them from being touchdowns. If you’re going to be running a system with only one deep safety, he’d better be a guy who can tackle as well as cover.
What Huff has shown time and time again is that he over-pursues the ball carrier, and gets himself out of position so that he can’t make the tackle. Dude doesn’t have to be the second coming of Jack Tatum, but he should be able to get his guy on the ground if the Raiders are going to trust him as their last line of defense.
August 23rd, 2010 at 10:45 am
Wouldn’t be surprised at all if Hiram Eugene is on the opening day roster and Huff is history.
***
LOL!
you can’t be serious. Unless Stevie Brown comes out of nowhere and proves to be a better cover man than Huff at FS, he’s your starter for 16 games there – not Hiram “stiff armed” Eugene
and if Mike Mitchell couldn’t unseat Mike Huff last year, I doubt Stevie Brown can either.
Eugene = hot garbage
August 23rd, 2010 at 10:46 am
Rock I never said it was Huffs fault on that play. I merely pointed out the fact (it is FACT) that he did a poor job in regards to HIS responsibility, he failed to use the proper angle of pursuit and was made to look silly. I agree that there was a big let down up front for Forte to even get to the free safety but how does the let down up front absolve huff of his responsibility to stop the damn running back!
August 23rd, 2010 at 10:47 am
Eugene is really bad as a starter. But I guess his special teams play is what keeps him on the roster.
Really like how Mitchell and Brown have played this preseason, but I’m not sure either of them are any better equipped than Huff to play FS in the Raiders’ system.
August 23rd, 2010 at 10:49 am
TCMA: why not have Nnamdi Asomugha play FS then?
he’s the best cover man on the team and he should be able to make open field tackles if we’re paying him $15-25 million per season, right?
N21 would have looked just as “silly” as Huff on the same play, Forte TD either way
August 23rd, 2010 at 10:49 am
If Huff was somehow not on the roster week 1, which I find VERY hard to imagine, I think the most likely scenario would be Branch shifting to FS and Mitchell taking over at SS
August 23rd, 2010 at 10:50 am
Huff is still the best option for FS we have on the team at this point. But, he is and will be the weakest link on the defense. Sorry Rockstar, we all have our favorite players, just asking you to be a bit realistic here bro.
August 23rd, 2010 at 10:51 am
It is one of the few highlights NFL Network has of the game:
nfl.com/videos/nfl-cant-miss-plays/09000d5d819edbe6/Forte-goes-all-the-way
The D-line got beat, McClain over-pursued, and Huff gave up a touchdown. No finger pointing necessary – everyone needs to take responsibility and improve.

Yep. Tafur’s wrong. Campbell wasn’t looking because Morris botched the snap count. Watch the play; Campbell obviously wasn’t expecting the ball. Had Morris snapped the ball at the right time Campbell might have been able to catch it anyway, despite it being offline.
August 23rd, 2010 at 10:53 am
if we’re going to trade or cut Huff, make Asomugha the FS and see what happens …
CJ37 & Routt are both making starter money at CB anyways and the young rooks are showing some serious potential off the bench too
N21 free to roam sounds good, doesn’t it?
cutting Huff would save the team $5 million, but he’s been a leader on D this offseason according to all the Jerry Mac tweets I’ve read. He’s not going anywhere this year imo
when he makes the Pro Bowl, I expect a good foot washing – haha

I didn’t say anyone on our roster would do any better. I said that Huff’s problem since day 1 in the NFL was his tackling. In particular, his angles of pursuit. He over-pursues the ball carrier and gets himself out of position. He’s done that every single season, although he did it slightly less often last season.

Well, the preseason is about finding what areas the team can improve, because you can’t be sure that what works in the preseason is going to work when the games count.
The offense played well, in spite of offensive line play. Even on JC’s pick (which he probably should have just thrown away, granted), it was because he got popped as soon as he made the throw. I believe that was one of the plays where Peppers beat the LT back inside.

Always remember this is a business.
The bottom line is Huff has been getting paid first round money and has been a disappointment.
He’s definitely not a hitter, his tackling is questionable, and he hasn’t come up with many picks.
If you think his supposed coverage ability cements a roster spot, you need to think again.
Another thing, Walt McFadden is going to make this team and might even get a look at safety. Some holdover from the secondary is going bye-bye.
And if it comes down to dollars and cents and a business decision, then Huff could very well be on thin ice.

St Jimmy – The 24 in my moniker has nothing to do with Huff. I have been using this moniker since 1999 when I bought my brand new B-lack C-avalier Z24… I dont own the car anymore but I use that moniker for a 1000 different things so never bothered to change it.
Definitely not getting touchy about Huff dude… look back through the posts… I was critisizing him for not using the proper angle of pursuit and getting burned on the play. I sometimes forget that you people dont know my so my sarcasm doesnt carry through my posts. Apologies.
August 23rd, 2010 at 11:29 am
I just watched the replay of the game (NFL Network). I was most impressed by Routt and TK – both very pleasant surprises! The score could have been a lot worse than it was, even though the Bears haven’t mastered the art of the long snap quite yet! We could have had three, possibly four. touchdowns in the first half and were only one play away from scoring again at the end of the game. Our defense dominated – Wimbley is already proving to be a special player. If we lose to the Whiners, I won’t be bothered so much — there are a lot of guys we haven’t seen yet who need to shake the rust off. Still, I am looking forward to the team’s anticipated return to Alameda …

Was Huff injured at the end of last year ?
Why was Eugene on the field when he got stiff armed against the Ravens ?
I can remember Huff getting a few picks early last year and everyone thinking he turned his career around.
Then it seemed he faded out and disappeared.
Refresh my memory – did he come up lame or ‘fatigued’ or whatever. Or did Eugene supplant him ?
August 23rd, 2010 at 11:33 am
There is nothing on the web about Gradkowski being traded. Wow. I said I’d avoid getting personal with people, but when you have idiots starting rumors… GET A LIFE!

I want to apologize to everyone about my behavior in here yesterday. I made the mistake of sinking down to someone’s level, when I shouldn’t have. I was expressing my views on this team and then this person started personally insulting me. When I insulted him back, he then challenged me to a fight, telling me to meet him at the coliseum. I took his bait and made threats to him as well. While I’ll never apologize directly to that vile piece of crap, I would like to apologize to the rest of you. Such behavior is inappropriate in here. For now, I talk about issues facing the team (for better or worse), and nothing else. I will ignore all personal insults and especially challenges to fights, so don’t waste your fingers typing. Or, do, the choice is yours. Just know you’ll be ignored.

If Schilens needs knee surgery, it’s going to be a massive blow to whatever the Raiders thought their receivers could be capable of. He’s the only Raiders receiver with consistent hands, but if he can’t get on the field then it’s time to call up AJ Smith and figure out who the Raiders have to blow to get Vincent Jackson.

August 23rd, 2010 at 11:55 am
Since you are apparently not smart enough to go to google let me help you:
Coach Tom Cable indicated Monday that Chaz Schilens may need to undergo surgery to repair a knee injury.
The knee problem developed due to Schilens’ overcompensating for the foot injury that has plagued him since last summer. Cable suggested that Schilens could return for the opener if it turns out to be just a scope, but that’s overly optimistic. It’s time to take Schilens off redraft cheat sheets. He won’t help the Raiders early in the season. Louis Murphy, though, enters the picture as the late-round flier of choice in Oakland.

Damn shame that Schillens can’t stay healthy.
Kid has it all. Great size, fabulous hands, excellent speed, runs nice routes.
Everything but the most important asset – durability.
Those small bone injuries to the foot can linger forever and lead to other injuries when the athlete tries to compensate.
Even if the knee just needs a minor clean up, might be best to shut it down for the year if the foot still isn’t right.
Raids have to come up with a reliable posession receiver option.

======================================================
No, No, No…there is no “Outside of that 89-yard run”
That 89 yard run counts! The fact it led to 7 points amplifies the point. 89 yard runs count!
The Raiders have to stop that mess more than they don’t. Shouldn’t get blown up like that more than a handfull of times a year.
‘
That mess killed this team in the past. They have to play DISCIPLINED football on every play.
Chicago ran 25x for 174 yards….7 yards per carry…that can’t happen in the future….otherwise we will be saying “Outside of a few plays we would have made the playoffs”
Gotta keep on it. I am glad that the players are talking about the flub up and are determined to fix it.
Don’t gloss over that play or the run performance….it is what it is and they have to change it

The defense looked like the same ol Raiders on that 89 yard run. You rarely even see 50+ yard running plays go for scores anymore. Somebody usually catches them. The Raiders D was sleeping, period. I still don’t think they practice hard. They’re running better plays on offense and have some better players on defense, but they’re still lacking the organization, discipline, and overall cohesiveness to be a winning team. It’s a 4 quarter game. And the Raiders are still a 1 quarter team.

SnB,
You make a valid point about stopping the big play, however you are stretching your point about run defense by saying that the Bears averaged 7 yards per carry.
Technically, that’s true. However if that one run is taken out of there they averaged about half that.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not excusing the play or saying it doesn’t need to be addressed. What I AM saying is that the other 24 carries the Bears had netted them only 85 yards. That is something that should not be overlooked and has to be considered when you’re talking about our run defense. If one carry matters, then the other 24 have to matter as well.
August 23rd, 2010 at 12:53 pm
So Schilens now needs knee surgery. C’mon Cable, how do you screw up your knee while watching practice? As great a prospect this guy might have been he can’t stay healthy. He’s just too damn fragile. In any event, he;s history. Just put his as on IR and let’s move on. You can work him out again next year. Maybe he will have healed by then – probably not. Let’s NOT hold a 53 slot for him hoping for participation this year. Should have taken TO when we had the shot.
August 24th, 2010 at 8:27 am
First tyime posting here, been a Raiders Fan for over 38 years, since I wrote a letter to RB #44 Marv Hubbard as a kid.
Here’s My Take on the ‘10 Squad:
Team can no longer count on Schillens to ever get healthy, need to move on. Watched Ford in last years ACC Champ game and he doesn’t appear to have any hands, he catches with his arms, probably another dudd. He might make it as a return specialist and the occassional deep threat, but doesn’t appear to be an every down threat. Historically speaking, all the great ones caught with their hands, not arms… Jury still out on DHB, most likely another arms catcher, hopefully this year we’ll find-out. Very surpirsed the Raiders haven’t picked-up on that… RB’s: We have one back, Bush, McFadden is a disappointment to date, but perhaps this year he comes out. Cartwright and Bennett are breather backs, nothing more… Squad is a major improvement from last season, mainly because the Defense ahs been retoolled, a-lot to like there, or so it appears for now.
2010 Raiders go 8-8, +/-1, given the weak schedule they should roll everyone in the NFC West except SF, and should roll everyone in the AFC West except SD, I hope we spilt with them. Week 1 in Tenn will be interesting, don’t think any team in the league matches up against a HOT Vince Young and Co. Cable gets his first real chance from under J Russ, we’ll see what he’s made of and I’m not a big Hue Jackson fan. But, I keep an open mind. Pretend I’m from Mizzu and show me Hue !!!
Peace Out…
