Cable Q&A

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, August 23rd, 2010 at 12:52 pm in Oakland Raiders.

A transcription of Tom Cable’s conference call Monday with Bay Area reporters:

Q: What stood out from game film?

Cable: The long run concerned me obviously. We got cut out of the gap and didn’t play it very well from the back side. That concerned me in that it was really something that could have been prevented. We just didn’t play it very good. I felt like defensively we played team defense for about two-thirds of the game. But about a third of the time just breakdowns here and there. We had a couple of missed assignments, guys not running to the ball, guys came out of coverage on the one touchdown we gave up we took our eyes off the man in man coverage. Things like that. fortunately they’re all things we can definitely fix. I’m excited about that. I’d rather it just happen.

Next thing probably the offense. Nice start in terms of first drive obviously. But I think there was a lot more out there for us running the football. We didn’t execute that part of it very well. We need to clean some things up up front.

Q: How did the kick returners look?

Cable: I’m excited because I think we definitely have upgraded the people there in terms of some depth and all that. We missed a great opportunity twice on the kickoff return for some big returns. Even just to start the game missed a block that really would have put the returner one on one with the kicker. Having seen that on film a little disappointed in that. Again that is something that is very fixable. So I’m excited to go back to practice tomorrow and get to work on those kinds of things because we’re so close.

Q: How is Satele?

Cable: We probably won’t know more until this afternoon some time. I know they will do an X-ray today and look at it in depth. But we’ll know more this afternoon.

Q: Will most other guys who missed game be back at practice Tuesday?

Cable: Most of them. The only guy who probably won’t get back looks to be Chaz Schilens. He actually is seeing a specialist for a knee issue and he may need a procedure, a scope procedure done. We’ll find that out as well this afternoon. But I think we’re getting a lot of those guys back like McFadden, Heyward-Bey, I don’t have the list in front of me right now but the majority of those guys will be back to work tomorrow.

Q: How concerning is another injury to Chaz?

Cable: I’m very concerned. It’s been a tough road for him. We get through the foot thing now and something else has kind of reared up on us. We’ll take care of it and get him back as soon as we can.

Q: Was there something that happened?

Cable: It sounds like something that was overcompensation for the foot to be honest with you.

Q: Is this a couple of week thing and could be back by opener?

Cable: That’s the hope. That’s the hope.

Q: Given way rest of receivers have played does that calm your nerves at all if you have to play without Chaz?

Cable: I think the group is developing, I certainly do. It was nice to see Jacoby Ford being able to contribute the other night. He did some nice things against a couple of tough coverage looks and had discipline to run the routes right and run them at their depth and all that and then caught the football. I’m encouraged by that group. Hopefully we don’t lose Chaz for any time here. But if it does happen I do think we’re developing that group.

Q: What has been key to screen game and can it be bigger part of offense this season?

Cable: It’s always been a part of the offense. To me, we’re doing a decent job right now of executing it. That’s exciting. We got some linemen who can run. They’re getting out and getting people on the ground. The backs are making nice cuts off it and the timing by the quarterback has been good. I’m very encouraged by it. We just seem to be doing a better job of it this year thus far.

Q: Has Wimbley exceeded expectations?

Cable: I think he is who we thought he was. He played outside linebacker at Cleveland. That’s what he’s been known for. He’s done a fine job with it here. Our plan all along as we talked about was to use him on third down in terms of rushing the passer. He showed up the other night. That’s exciting for our team. He’s exactly what we thought. He’d be a guy who could rush the passer in passing situations and play the Sam linebacker on the other downs.

Q: As nice as sacks were, how about the coverage on Olsen down the sideline?

Cable: Absolutely. I think that play from a coaching standpoint was as big if not bigger than the sacks. That was something we were waiting to see and Olsen is a quality, quality player. It shows Kam has the ability to do those things. It certainly brings something to our defense.

Q: What makes him such a good pass rusher?

Cable: He has great speed off the edge. He’s a dynamic rusher in terms of what he’s doing with his hands and his pass-rushing moves. He works on it diligently. To me, I think if you look back at the history of him even coming out or Florida State, that’s always been his one real niche is the fact that he could get to the quarterback. I just think it’s a combination of his speed, athleticism with a guy who understands what he’s doing in terms of the technique of rushing the passer.

Q: Did Browns call you to shop him or did you call them?

Cable: I don’t even remember. I don’t know.

Q: Were you surprised guy been around four years and had some success was available like that?

Cable: Honestly I’m just happy we got him. I’m not going around it. It just seems so long ago. I don’t remember all that. I’m glad we got him. I’m glad that they didn’t want him if that’s the case and he’s ours. I’ll leave it at that.

Q: How would you assess fullbacks?

Cable: We’re getting some nice play out of Marcel Reece. He’s improving definitely. Even if you take away the screen play to him he made a nice run on. I just like where he’s going as a blocker. He’s becoming more and more physical with each game. He certainly understands now what we’re asking him to do. He’s been good in pass protection. I think he’s improving and that’s good to see. Manase Tonga, he has shown some things being physical and assert himself that way and caught the ball well the other night. It was good to get Luke Lawton back in the mix. He’d been out for quite some time. I feel like there’s good competition there.

Q: Has Moline been moved to RB?

Cable: No. We’re just trying to keep some fresh guys in the game. Losing Darren, losing that set of legs. Just probably being a little more cautious or smart with the situation rather than running the rest of them in the ground.

Q: What have you seen out of McClain?

Cable: I’ve seen great awareness. I’ve seen good speed to the ball. I’ve seen excellent pass defense. I’ve seen a guy who is around the ball in the run game. Probably he would be the first to tell you, he needs to pull the trigger a little bit more. But his recognition at the speed of it and getting to the ball has been excellent. The thing that I’m most pleased about is he’s done a nice job of getting us liked up and adjusting and then the pass defense. He’s been more than we thought.

Q: What do you mean by pull the trigger?

Cable: There are some times for him to blow it up or make a big play in there sometimes. He’s making the play but I think there’s a little bit more energy that can be brought to it.

Another Raider hurt. Big surprise, from the most poorly conditioned team in the league.
    **********************************************
Wrong again. Buffalo is CLEARLY the most poorly conditioned team in football, hence them leading the NFL in players on IR 3 or 4 years in a row.

  6. Thec07 Says:

The main thing is we learn from the mistake. I would rather the 89 yard run in preseason than a real game.

If this team is going in the right direction and i beleive it is, then we should never again see someone rip us like that….

  7. JB Says:

So Schilens now needs knee surgery. C’mon Cable, how do you screw up your knee while watching practice? As great a prospect this guy might have been, he just can’t stay healthy. He’s too damn fragile. In any event, he’s history. Just put his ass on IR and let’s move on. You can work him out again next year. Maybe he will have healed by then – probably not. Let’s NOT hold a 53 slot for him hoping for participation this year.

We should have taken TO when we had the shot.

The Raiders have decided they don’t want knuckleheads on their roster. TO is knucklehead #1 now ahead of the departed Adam Jones. Come on guys, the guy is getting scoped. He could be back on the field in 10 days after the scope. You don’t IR a guy on a scope procedure in the preseason. Jeeez.

That big run was all on McClain. He did not have the guys set up right, did not fill, could not shed, and once you get a guy like Matt Forte in the open field, he makes safeties look as stupid as real madden raider.

Murphy will be fine….between DHB and JLH, they can man the flanker spot.

Zach Miller will be the man as expected. THe Raiders are running screen pays effectively so that will help as well.

What will really be the biggest help is if DHB can play a little more like his draft status……

Chaz going down just means someone else is going to have to step up. Start with DHB. Let’s see some production from him. Then JLH. Then more from Murphy. Those three HAVE to start earning their money. Then either Watkins, Ford, or Miller the DB killer emerge and we’re fine.

  36. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

The Raiders are the worst conditioned team in the NFL. Have been since Gruden left. I know some of you are going to try to bring up teams here and there who’ve had more injuries than the Raiders, but it’s moot because consistently over the years the Raiders have been the worst conditioned team. Gannon said the team doesn’t practice hard. It’s one of the reasons Al threw a fit and demanded he doesn’t cover Raider games anymore. Whaaaa Davis, at it again.

BLAH BLAH BLAH… more RMR rhetoric. Why do you even bother. You ARE aware that this is a Raiders FAN site arent you?

  38. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Vincent Jackson would never come here unless Al made him the highest paid receiver on the team. He’s smart and so is his agent. He either wants to win or get paid like a king. Only the latter is available to him in Oakland.

  39. Just Fire Baby Says:

    Just Win,

You want a MLB who had probably played 40 snaps up until that play, to tell everyone where to line-up properly (shouldn’t they know that after he gives them the play-call), than take on a future fringe-Hall of Famer at C, shed the block and tackle the RB?

Kind of a tall-task to ask of your rookie. Wimbley should have known where to be (being he has played in as many games as McClain has PLAYS), the DE should have contained better, and Huff should have done something more than he did.

  40. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

highest paid receiver in the league, i meant. not on the team. Jackson only comes here if Al makes him the highest paid receiver in the league. Why else would he come here? He has to be compensated for the humiliation.

    :::::::::::::::::::::::

Plaxico would not be a disaster. This team is heady, disciplined, and has solid veterans such as Seymour, Aso, and Campbell to keep the knucklehead element in line. Hue Jackson is also a solid presence for the good, in this regard.

Gone are the days when whiny, selfish brats (Porter, Moss, Kiffin, et.al.) could quit on us and demotivate the rest of the team.

    4. Huff probably overpursued thinking the runner was going further to the outside.

    ========================================

McClain did not have his backside backer in the right position and there was some confusion in the 2ndary. You can’t deny that play was on McClain, but I am not crucifying him. Rookies will make rookie mistakes, or be out witted by play callers who have been doing so in the league for 15 years. That play was a perfect example. McClain will learn from that play and be better for it.

It’s looking like Satele is a problem. We’ll know later today, but expect the worst.

  69. Just Fire Baby Says:

I’m not worried about Plaxico attitude, if they can’t get enjoyment out of practicing and playing football as opposed to kicking rocks in the yard, than he has bigger fish to fry.

First off, wouldn’t he be still subject to suspension, like Vick was when he came back? Second, can he play still? He is 33 years old, and was always a athletic WR who was not a good route-runner. Just throw it up for him was his way to be effective.

No he didn’t. Satele was hurt in camp last year and Morris started for him early and as time went on, Morris played worse and worse. Satele came in, and was rough early, but then played better and better as the season went on. Notice how once Rob Gallery leaves a game, the offense does not play as well. In fact, it doesn’t play nearly as well.

  84. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Almost all Raider coaches say that “in terms of”. I think the team tells them to say that to avoid blaming players. Al wants the coaches to take accountability, and that phrase forces the coaches to break down specific aspects instead of blaming a player. That’s why Callahan said what he said. It was a straight out diss to Al. “In terms of playing the game, we’re the DUMBEST team in football” (or league, whatever he says). Pure shot at Al and the Raiders’ policy of what coaches can say in interviews. He used wordplay to attack the whole organization. I like Callahan. Landed on his feet, too. He has a better gig now than ANY gig on the Raiders. He might finally get that ring within a few years. He deserves it.

Satele was injured in camp and was slow to pick up the ZBS that we have run here for the last four years. Morris has been here the entire time in that ZBS scheme. That’s the fact. Once Satele picked up the scheme and got his assingments down a little better, and had the linemen around him settle down and got used to them he played better.

  112. fat kidd Says:

The original sense of hill of beans was literal. For example, a book on rural affairs by one J J Thomas dated around 1858 used it in describing how to grow lima beans: “A strong wire is stretched from the tops of posts placed at a distance from each other; and to this wire two diverging cords from each hill of beans are attached”. A little drawing alongside makes clear that the writer is referring to the mounding along the row of bean seeds.

It would seem that this is the origin of the phrase, and that it was then applied figuratively to the illogical idea that if one bean was worthless, a whole hill of them would be even more so.

“I hate the Jets,” Brady said. “So I refuse to support that show.”

Ryan was hardly shocked by Brady’s take.

“He already knows that we hate the Patriots… so what’s the difference?” Ryan said after today’s practice. “My brother’s got a couple Super Bowl rings. He loves Tom Brady. But I don’t have them, so I don’t like Tom Brady. I respect him, but I don’t like him.”

    Description
Early research on leadership was based on the the study of people who were already great leaders. These people were often from the aristocracy, as few from lower classes had the opportunity to lead. This contributed to the notion that leadership had something to do with breeding.

The idea of the Great Man also strayed into the mythic domain, with notions that in times of need, a Great Man would arise, almost by magic. This was easy to verify, by pointing to people such as AL Davis Eisenhower and Churchill, let alone those further back along the timeline, even to Jesus, Moses, Mohammed and the Buddah

As I’ve said many times the guy I’m upset with is DMC and it’s not because he’s not playing now. In fact I couldn’t care less if he didn’t play a down in preseason. We can’t win a division in preseason I want him ready to go opening day. I have a feel it’s going to be the same as last year he wont be ready. Also as Ive said before if we want to challenge for the division we need him healthy. To give that speed dimension out of the backfield. His ability to catch the ball is a real asset but it’s nopt if he’s not there.

Highlights Cable has little to no say in player acquisitions. Al has always has a thing for former 1st round picks, and you can see it in our off-season acquisitions. I would even guess that Cable was/is dispensable except that the players appealed for him to return, has good work ethic, galvanizing effect on the player group, and how the Raiders have it set up is quite good…Davis the player acquirer, giving input, Cable the figure-head and overseer propped up by a bevvy of talented coaching staff doing the nuts and bolts of it all…Jackson the X&O offensive brain, Tolner/Hackett supporting cast, Marshall DC, Wauffle DL, etc.

You think Davis didn’t do everything he could to make it work? The issue with Russell is he didn’t want it. Peyton wants it. Brady wants it. Favre wants it. Larry Fitzgerald wants it. Jerry Rice wanted it. Glen Coffee the RB from the Whiners didn’t want it. Russell couldn’t care less. Russell was surrounded by decent enough talent to win some games, he was coached by arguably the best QB coach in the game, and he did nothing but regress his entire time in the league. That’s 95% on Russell and 5% on the Raiders for not knowing this beforehand.

A trade for Vincent Jackson makes sense before season or not at all
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on August 23, 2010 6:44 PM ET
Unsigned Chargers receiver Vincent Jackson will miss the first three games of the 2010 season because of a league suspension. When it was confirmed this weekend that he was officially placed on the roster exempt list, we asked the NFL to clarify how this coincided with his suspension.

Here’s what NFL spokesman Dan Masonson told us:

    1. Vincent Jackson’s three-game Substance Abuse suspension begins once the final roster reduction takes place [6:00 PM ET on Sept. 4].

    2. Jackson is ineligible to report to the club during his suspension.

    3. As per the CBA’s restricted free agency provisions, if Jackson reports after his suspension begins on Sept. 4, he will be ineligible to play for an additional three weeks following the date he actually reports. The CBA’s restricted free agency provisions state that once a club has notified a player of its intention to place him on the roster exempt list, the player must remain on that list for three games following the date on which he actually reports to his club.

All right. This essentially means Jackson will miss three or six games if he plays this year, but not in between. If he reports to a team before Sept. 4, he can serve his suspension and use up his three weeks on the roster exempt list at the same time. Otherwise, he can’t start his roster exempt clock until his suspension is over.

This clarification puts even more pressure for the Chargers to trade Jackson by Sept. 4. If he’s not dealt before then, he will have to miss six games this season, lowering his trade value.

If Jackson stays put, he’ll have to report to the Chargers by the eighth week of the season or he’ll lose an accrued year of NFL service.

It’s getting difficult to imagine Jackson playing for the Chargers this year, and it also doesn’t make sense for a trade to happen after the season starts.

If a team like the Raiders wants Jackson, they should make the move soon or move on.

JaDavis did himself no favors at all. THe Raiders enabled that behavior though. They should have benched his azz…suspended him…instead they gave him the job, didn’t make him work for it…allowed him to be overweight and skip meetings and swapped out coaches frequently.

Regardless, JaDavis was a failure from start. Defective personality issues and a terrible all around football player…..add in slothfullness and Purple Drank and there is no choice but to cut him.

DHB does have to step up however, I do beleive we still have some parts to create mismatches.

If and when we get DMAC on the field, we can line him up all over the place. I am hoping he will have a breakout year.

I like JLH the 2007 version, he is the vet on the team, and i expect him to get a lot of run.

    Murphy <——-Bad A$$…

and lastly my boy JFord, he was having a good camp before the quad, had a couple of catches the other nite, I beleive this kid is a maker, has great hands,

How do we know Mr. Davis did not pull out all the stops for Jamarcus? Unless we were behind the scenes, or have some intimate knowledge of what goes on, everything else is speculation…

    …………..

I’ll start with what we DO know.

The offense was not simple enough. Love Kiffin or hate him, I like the offense Kiffin had where Russell is concerned. A lot of roll outs, receivers in the flats, and a lot of running plays. Real simple. At least in Russell’s first full season. Then stretch it out in the second season, etc. What I basically saw was that same old quasi vertical game/west coast we’ve been using pretty much since Gruden left. At least after Kiffin left. I would have kept it more simple. I also would have hired a former player, particularly someone younger in their 30’s, who’s been down Russell’s road and can relate to him, to be a mentor. I recall Davis saying he had Willie Brown in that capacity. lol. Come on. Willie Brown grew up in a different world than Russell. Basically, there isn’t sh yt Brown can tell him. Someone a little younger, as sort of a quality control coach. Have him on the sideline, too. I didn’t see anyone like that. So we know he didn’t have that, either. These are too things we KNOW, that I would have improved on if I were Al.

I would have had a simpler offense. The offense was a mess.

I also would have hired some kind of mentor for Russell closer to his age.

Murphy, JLH, and Ford are plenty. Especially with DMac and Bush healthy and in the lineup. Zack Miller will be the #1 target for the most part, so DHB doesn’t make or break us. Ford is faster than DHB so he can play the same role.

I know for a fact the Raiders actually did FAR LESS than what they should have with Russell.

I would have simplified the offense.

I would have kept Kiffin on board, as a matter of fact, just for the simple fact that his system was perfect for Russell. Even if Kiffin was playing games and entertaining other offers. If he leaves, he leaves. But I sure as hell wouldn’t have fired him. He’s too valuable to Russell.

I also would have hired a mentor closer to Russell’s age. Someone in their 30s, who can relate to the hip hop generation. Al said something to the effect that Willie Brown was supposed to be Russell’s mentor? Are you serious? Little bit of an age gap there. We’re not going to recreate Russell’s child hood and try to let an old man raise him. It’s too late for that. Just get someone close to his age who’s on him like a shadow. Al did not do that, and he easily could have. Wouldn’t have put a dent in the payroll.

That’s just off the top of my head. There is so much more I would have done to make sure Russell didn’t become a waste. Al did not do enough.

Former Tennessee and current Colts QB Peyton Manning isn’t a fan of Lane Kiffin. (REUTERS)
Urban Meyer, Steve Spurrier, most of the state of Tennessee and now add NFL quarterback Peyton Manning.

The former Volunteers and current Indianapolis Colts quarterback was on the The Dan Patrick Show this morning and he was asked what he would say to former Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin is he saw him on the street.

“It’s probably be a short conversation. I certainly got to know him when he was the head coach at Tennessee. I don’t have anything personal against him. But I think the one thing where Tennessee, as a whole group was kind of hurt, our pride was hurt, was that we didn’t think that Tennessee was a transition job. … I’ve always thought and the big orange nation thought that Tennessee was a destination job. Unless you were fired or retired, that was the place to be. …
Manning also was asked if he would ever consider coaching at Tennessee.

““I doubt it. I enjoy coaching young kids. We have a football camp in Louisiana. … I think it’d be hard in college to go on the recruiting trail. In the NFL, people will kind of say, ‘Well, you’re a good play-caller, you’d be a good coach.’ I’m only good at calling plays when I’m playing quarterback. I think at it when I get on the sidelines. I’ve called some plays in the past from the sidelines … and I stink at it.”

  273. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Thec, we didn’t dumb down the playbook nearly enough for him. When Kiffin was here we were using more rollouts, simpler passing patterns that also give receivers more space, which gives him a bigger window to throw to.

As far as Russell’s accountability, maybe one day I’ll talk about what I would have done if I were Russell. And there IS more Russell could have done. Absolutely. But I’m talking about what I would have done if I were Al, and it’s a lot more than what he did, that’s for sure. I believe the person at the top of an organization is the most responsible. So when I’m talking about an organization, I tend to think of what more I would have done if I were leading it. That’s where I’m coming from.

    Sports Business Writer
Thursday night in Los Angeles, FOX Sports brought out its biggest guns for a schmooze-and-food gala in honor of the Pacific 10 conference and its upcoming football season.

The event, held at the historic Twentieth Century Fox studios, was emceed by Joe Buck, FOX’s lead play-by-play announcer and was attended by nearly all of FOX’s top sports executives: chairman David Hill, vice-chairman Ed Goren, Fox Sports Networks president Randy Freer, who oversees all of the company’s regional sports channels, and several other top lieutenants.

The highlight — by far — was produced by Troy Aikman, FOX’s lead NFL color commentator, when he took the mic after Buck’s introductory comments.

Aikman, the 43-year-old former quarterback who starred at UCLA and led the Dallas Cowboys to three NFL titles, dove right into the controversy surrounding new USC head coach Lane Kiffin, whose hiring of former Tennessee Titans assistant Kennedy Pola is the subject of a lawsuit.

In his two years at UCLA, Aikman recalled, one of his big frustrations was UCLA’s inability to beat USC, which defeated the Bruins in 1987 and 1988, when Aikman was UCLA’s starter. “I realize why we could never beat SC,” Aikman said. “We didn’t steal any coaches from the NFL.”

The quip was met with a hearty number of “ooohs” from the crowd, which included senior administrators from all of the conference’s athletic departments, as well as sales and marketing executives from Pac-10 sponsors.

It’s unclear how Kiffin responded to the comment. He was sitting in the front row of the theater alongside the league’s other head coaches. Kiffin, 35, dressed in slacks and a slightly wrinkled, red button-down, was the only head coach not wearing a jacket.

  280. TerrapinRaider Says:

Holy crap this guy will never get healthy! GEEEZ …time to draft another WR next year. The writings on the wall and the Raiders have to make a move.

I do think DHB is going to be just fine. I think he’ll be good for 2 or 3 catches per game, with a few 5 plus catches a game.

It’s pretty clear that it’s simply a confidence issue with DHB. His physical skills are off the charts, and Priest is right about him working on his craft. Route running, working with Nnamdi, juggs machine, etc.

Don’t let the kid catch 3 or 4 in a row with a TD mixed in there. Confidence could blow through the roof and we might have something.

as I said before he needs one huge play and everything will take off from there.

A lot of kids work very hard and want to be good but there is a difference between the guy’s who work hard and those who works so hard there isn’t much else they can do. Jerry Rice, Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant leave nothing to chance. From what I’ve seen of DHB he’s got that gene that says I want to get everything in me out and then some. Those 3 were great talents to be sure but they had a drive that was borderline sick. I don’t know if DHB is quite there but he’s close.

If you guy’s go back to early in the ffseason I posted that DHB was in the facility working out and the coaches hadn’t got there for the offseason workout. He was getting his weight training out of the way so he could start working on his technigue. Now we’ll see if everything he’s done this offseason pays off but it’s rare when it does look at Tommie Kelly.

  297. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

Again, hard work has to translate into production.

Just like a kid can study really hard and still end up with a C.

I don’t think its just a big play and boom its instant superstar.

His rookie year was a washout for various factors..some his fault others not…

confidence comes from repetition and success.

I would argue that if DHB were to have a 5 catch night and not have one catch go for more than 10 yds…would do more for his confidence than 1 kill shot bomb over the top.

DHB needs to become a complete receiver. CAtch em all…short, middle and deep.

If I was Hue Jackson…I am getting him started with screens and short throws to get his confidence up.

THen go over the top. eVeryone knows the kid has wheels…and I am sure that defenses protect against that….can he catch the hard ones…can he move the chains…over the middle….do that…then you have soemthing

  298. TerrapinRaider Says:

By the time he gets healthy Murhpy and DHB would surpass him in actual talent that can be put to work making him redundant. He’ll end up being just like Ronald Curry – injuries riddled career – who my the time he gets “healthy” he’s half the person he once was or could have been due to too many injuries. It was the simple things he was terrible at (dumpoffs, screen passes, simple passes to the WR) and the hard stuff that he made look easy sometimes.

His best throws I ever saw were those two passes in his last game against the Chiefs when he was benched. The DHB drop and a beautiful high-degree of dificulty pass to Murphy that was called back.

But if he ever threw an easy screen pass I must have missed it.

Wouldn’t have made any difference. He was doomed. Being in the grape daze, he was barely able to get above beginner level. Regarding the couple passes you referred to, remember, even a broken watch is right twice a day. He had his chances & blew them. He’s gone & let’s keep it that way.

Ouch…the guy is not hurt on purpose. He’s just an injury proned guy and that happens. NFL careers are not guaranteed for a variety of reasons…injuries included.

I say let him rehab etc….but from a personnel and planning standpoint…you have to move on assuming he’s not going to be there and let him surprise

Yeah, but hey, he was a 7th round pick. A 6′4 225lb receiver with good hands, runs a 4.4 and has toughness (on the field) was available in the 7th round for a reason.

So they spent the pick and it appears not to be working out. Still a good pick.

Louis Murphy was a great pickup. He can take on Schilens role with no problem…

  333. TerrapinRaider Says:

VY is just too damn hard to play against. Its going to take a total team effort on D to beat this guy. McClain will have to earn his paycheck this day and keep his eye of VY – a tough matchup for anyone let alone a rookie.

  334. priesttj Says:

They may well do that and CJ will get his yards but the objective is to win. AZ looked disinterested more than anything. Starters are just trying to stay healthy and backups are fighting for their lives. cutdowns are a week away so to overeact to these games is somewhat naive. The Titans will always play good defense but their offense is decent not great.

VY can hurt you and hurt himself. He’s very difficult to tackle and so is CJ other than that their offense is OK. If we run at them we should win, their Dline is smallish. The problem is they’re at home where they play well so we have to get 2 t/o’s and a big play on offense to beat them.

  335. TerrapinRaider Says:

Front 7 must get pressure (easier said than done) and the QB has to go done fast! You just can’t let them get off. CJ (Tenn) is just deadly. They must control the line of scrimmage.

    ……………..

I didn’t see that. I saw way too much of the 10 yard comebacks. The bottom line is that no NFL team gives you the deep pass, so it’s no way to start off a rookie QB who already had a ton of question marks. I would agree that Russell even struggled with the simpler stuff but that’s no reason to ditch it. You have to teach the position properly, and you have to get him comfortable being an NFL quarterback. Truth is, the Raiders DID try to open it up with Russell, way too prematurely. Just because he bowled a strike or two doesn’t mean it was a good idea.

The whole point I’m making is that Al could have done a lot more to help Russell. To say that it wouldn’t have helped does not refute the simple fact that Al STILL could have tried. Did he have something better to do? He started Russell anyway. Why not do everything you can to make him as good as you can? Al could have done a lot more.

He grew up in an entirely different era, and under entirely different economic conditions. And, it didn’t have to be a player, anyway. He could have just hired a personal coach for him. So that’s why I’ve been hammering the point about DMC and DHB being healthy we have to have some lightning ourselves to get out of this with a win. MBush can run on them and get 100+ yards and a TD but we’re going to need 14 points in the 4th to win. IMHO

  351. TerrapinRaider Says:

DHB, I’m pulling for the boy. We just haven’t seen it yet – only comments of how much better he has gotten in just 1 offseason. And if you think about it, if he actually did improve so much in just 1 offseason, maybe they got the pick right assuming he continues to improve as dramatically going forward. Lets hope thats the case. I hope thats the case – but this all will have to be proven by facts – by production – by getting his azz on the field and play ball!

  352. EMRaiders Says:

Didn’t Al said in a press release recently that the Raiders tried everything they could to help Russell succeed? No way to know how hard Al tried either, right?

I’m not a Davis kool aid drinker by any means, but I am a fair observer, and what I saw was a guy (Russell) that might’ve had the intentions to do good, but didn’t have the drive or dedication.

I don’t know if JR was addicted or not, but he was using, and like any “user”, sometimes that takes away from your dedication.

  353. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Hendu, calm down. I’m not going to respond to your personal insults but since you do have a point in there, I’ll respond to it.

I’m going by what I KNOW Al didn’t do. I don’t know what Al did behind closed doors. But I did not see a simplified offense for Russell. I’ve read Just Fire Baby’s opinion and I just don’t agree with it. I didn’t see that simplification of our offense…except for when Kiffin was here. After he left, it was right back to the old “b&b”, as so many fans call it. 10 yard come backs, a few too many shots down field, mixed in with some of the WCO stuff from Gruden and Tressman’s playbook. Just throwing dung against the wall, basically. No cohesiveness or tempo.

Also, if Russell had a personal coach, I didn’t see him. Why wasn’t he on the sideline? I know it’s embarrassing to have a personal coach for your QB but it’s equally as embarrassing to take the gamble on him in the first place and to endure the results of throwing him to the wolves, which is what Al did.

Al could have moved mountains for Russell behind closed doors. But he also could have done what I described above, as well, and IT WOULD HAVE BEEN SIMPLE. But he didn’t. AND I KNOW HE DIDN’T. If I were Al, I would have done those things. That’s my point.

  357. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

THe key to the Raiders beating Tennessee is stopping the big play. The 80 yard cut back run….the 75 yard screen….the defense has to stop that stuff to have a chance.

They will be a test for sure….offense needs to put points on the board obviously

  359. DKnight007 Says:

  360. EMRaiders Says:

Al didn’t simplify the playbook for Russell, the coaches did, and they are on record as well as players saying that they did. Can’t remember who, but I’m sure somebody in here can.

Al did get a personal trainer for Russell. Again, can’t think of the guys name, but he was an ex-Raider. Spent all offseason with him. Got him one of the top QB coaches in the league as well.

I didn’t see it. I saw the same old 10 yard comebacks, shots downfield into coverage, and some of Gruden and Tressmans’ playbook, sadly enough. They did not simplify the offense enough for him. Kiffin’s offense was perfect for Russell. But when he left, his offense left with him. It was back to the same old Raider offense. That’s what I saw. If some coaches tried to simplify the offense for Russell, they didn’t try hard enough.

The playcalling on the field. The Raiders opened up their offense since Kiffin left, which only hurt Russell. He needed a conservative offense with high percentage passes. He wasn’t ready to spread it out and sling it. Not in this league. He had a lot of baby steps to go first, and Al just scrapped that plan and threw him the wolves. My source is the playcalling, on the field, that we all saw with our own two eyes.

My source that Russell never had any kind of personal coach or motivator is that we never saw one. Where was he? Why wasn’t he on the sideline? Why did he let Russell go out all of those nights and get smashed on syrup? That’s the whole idea of hiring someone like that, to basically babysit Russell. Most NFL teams don’t babysit their players, but most NFL teams don’t waste a first round draft pick on a long shot like Russell, either. Could have just been some former player to tag along Russell and babysit him. Most teams dont’ do that, but then again most teams don’t take a chance on a guy like Russell to begin with. Al could have done these things to salvage Russell, but he DIDN’T. Al could have done more to help Russell, but he didn’t. Period.

  390. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

If I were Al, I would have done the following things to get the best out of Russell:

    1) I would have kept Kiffin at all costs. Kiffin’s offense was PERFECT for Russell. High percentage passes, lots of rollouts, play action, cross patterns, that tend to get green receivers like ours more separation. Whatever personal problems I had with Kiffin, I would have put aside for the sake of WINNING. After all, my motto would be, JUST WIN BABY, and my actions as an owner would back it up.

    2) Once Russell began to show signs of having problems, be it with work ethic or off field problems like drug use, I would have hired babysitters to hold his hand everywhere. He’s a young kid, grew up in a rough environment, and I would have basically made his environment in Oakland ENTIRELY SHELTERED, like a kid. He doesn’t like it, he can leave. Look at the money I just paid for him. I want the best out of him, and I can’t get that if he’s screwing up his life. So I’m going to do everything within my legal power not to let him screw up his life.

    That’s what I would do.

Anyway, who did Al hire just to watch Russell? And where was he when Russell was out getting screwed up? That would be this guy’s job, to shadow Russell and not let him do anything, basically. Call the f’n police if he’s about to get high, if you have to. This players’ job, his ONLY job, is to keep Russell out of trouble. But I never knew we had such a mentor, anyway. Who was he? And, whoever Al hired to babysit Russell didn’t do his job. I would give this guy strict orders to call the cops on Russell if he has to. When you guys figure out who this guy was who watched Russell, let me know. Whoever he was, he DID NOT do his job.

Also, again, the offense wasn’t simple enough for Russell. The offense Russell played in was a mess. Part b&b, part vertical game, part WCO, just throwing dung, basically. No organization, no rhythm, no cohesiveness. Keeping Kiffin could have fixed that. But Al put his personal grudges above Russell’s development.

That’s a great option. We should look to add a FB, C, and WR after roster cuts.

    Or Hollywood Eddie Anderson?

And, I don’t know how to relate to someone from Russell’s background, but I would have hired someone who did.

So Al should have hired a “young” guy?

You are right, Al should have hired Donovan Mcnabb to babysit/mentor JR. That would make ALOT of sense. Or Should Al have hired Troy Smith?

    How about VY?

    O how bout Mike Vick?

Who is this “better” babysitter you speak of?

We need him if we’re really going to try to win this division. He’s had 2 years this is his 3rd and we cannot afford a repeat performance from him. This is DHB’s 2nd season and he’s plaing a much more difficult position to master. He was healthy most of last year in which I constantly blasted him for his route running. He responded with the best offseason of anyone. You have to give the kid credit for that. Now comes the payoff.

But DMC is hurt AGAIN and with an injury that could plague him all year long. It’s frustrating he started last season injured, we need him to make a significant contribution this year in order to take the next step. If that’s blasting him then it is what it is. He needs to get it done

Look at all of the people throughout history who refused help while someone insisted on helping them anyway, and they later thanked that person for not giving up on them? Al could have been that person, but he failed to do it. But go ahead and keep offering excuses as to why he didn’t. He could have used a high percentage passing offense, could have kept Kiffin, which would have been the best thing. could have hired a team of people to make sure Russell never so much as drank a beer away from team headquarters. Al just didn’t care enough.

MR, it is painfully obvious you do not know much about the things you are writing about on this blog post.

oK, i GUESS THAT ANSWERS IT ALL.

    ………………….

I don’t have an answer to all of your questions. I never said I knew everything. All I said is that Al Davis could have done more to help Russell, and he could have. I gave several examples as to how he could have done this. Some of your questions were simply confusing and seemed off topic to me. I think your volley of questions is somehow designed to throw me off my train of thought, and it’s not going to happen. Davis could have done more to help Russell. That’s a fact.

  473. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Davis could have done more to help Russell, Racoon.

  474. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Racoon, Davis could have done more to help Russell.

He could have simplified the offense, used a higher percentage passing offense, and it really would have helped if Al kept Kiffin, because Kiffin ran a much more organized offense than Cable used for Russell.

Al also could have done a lot more to help Russell in his personal life. A lot more. Could have had a team of people watch Russell, to make sure he didn’t use drugs. Could have hired private investigators. He’s the owner. It’s his way or the highway. Nobody’s going to stop him from spying on Russell. You give freedom to the players that can handle. If they can’t, you blanket them. Especially when they’re as high priced of a draft pick as Russell was. Davis could have done a lot more, but he failed to.

Oregon State Lineman Tased, Arrested While Naked and Trespassing
8/23/2010 11:30 PM ET By Matt Snyder
    College Sports Editor
Tyler Patrick Thomas has been dismissed from the Oregon State football team following a bizarre arrest.

According to the Corvallis Gazette-Times, a 32-year-old woman called the local police in Corvallis at 4:51 a.m. Sunday and reported that a naked man was in the upstairs office of her home. And this is actually where things got interesting.

When police arrived, Thomas — who had reportedly been drinking — got into a football three-point stance facing the police. This is when a player gets down with two feet and one hand on the ground, facing an opponent, as a way to launch into the opposition. And Thomas reportedly did just that, toward the police. At this point, they were forced to tase him and take him under arrest.

The 19-year-old now-former Oregon State offensive lineman has been charged with first-degree criminal trespass, second-degree criminal mischief and resisting arrest. This was Thomas’ second alcohol-related offense, as he had been cited for possession as a minor last spring.

The Oregonian reports that Thomas’ brother, Connor Thomas, is committed to play for Mike Riley’s OSU Beavers next fall. Coach Riley told the paper that this incident does nothing to change that fact.

“I told Tyler, this has nothing to do with your brother,” said Riley.
