Schilens scoped; DHB returns
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, August 24th, 2010 at 5:49 pm in Oakland Raiders.
A few preliminary notes following Raiders’ practice as relayed by beat writer Steve Corkran:
– Wide receiver Chaz Schilens underwent arthroscopic knee surgery. Coach Tom Cable was not sure how long he would be out.
– Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey returned to practice and looked the better for sitting out four practices with “fatigue,” making a few plays after dropping off in the sessions that preceded his absence. Running back Darren McFadden was also back on the field.
– Alex Daniels is once again a defensive lineman. He was back to wearing No. 71, instead of 39, and Cable said after practice things hadn’t progressed as the staff had hoped.
– Right tackle Langston Walker (lower back) and defensive tackle Richard Seymour (triceps) didn’t practice, nor did center Samson Satele. Cable said Satele’s ankle injury, sustained early in the Bears game, did not look serious.
– Quarterback Bruce Gradkowski will see considerable action in the last two preseason games, although Cable would not commit as to whether he would go in as No. 2 or No. 3.
More to come later . . .

Will Schilens ever be healthy?
August 24th, 2010 at 5:51 pm
I am gonna win the lotto tonite and own a portion of the raiders!
August 24th, 2010 at 5:53 pm
Who was running 1st team C ????
Must be punk arsse Morris or else I’m sure there would have been some mention of Veldheer playing there.
August 24th, 2010 at 5:53 pm
You what sucks was I’ve always been a fan of schilens and last year I ordered a custom Schilens Jersey before he injured his foot and now he has to injure his knee….UGHHHHHHHHH
August 24th, 2010 at 5:54 pm
FB = big problem.
Daniels will get cut ..so will Lawton.
Leaving Reece vs Tonga. I haven’t see anything from our FBs to make me excited about either.
From Nnamdi’s link ..DHB lighted things up a little bit burning DBs for some deep catches.
August 24th, 2010 at 5:56 pm
we NEED Chaz to get healthy quick…
August 24th, 2010 at 5:57 pm
Truth is Louis Murphy deserves to be on the field of THIS team as a starter. According to current Raider orthodoxy…the the only way Murphy starts is over Schilens.
So not having Schilens will givve Murphy more playing time. Murphy caught some 30 passes with JaDavis and had a couple of big time games.
Now that he has a real QB throwing to him AND a real O.C…Louis Murphy could break out.
August 24th, 2010 at 5:58 pm
Time to sign or trade for a veteran WR
August 24th, 2010 at 5:58 pm
the only way murphy starts is over Schilens because DHB has cemented his role as a starter
August 24th, 2010 at 5:58 pm
Murphy also needs to hold onto the ball (just like every other WR we have)
August 24th, 2010 at 5:58 pm
Murphy is a good player….He’s been dropping balls lately in camp and pre-season games and that scares me

But when the Raiders are losing, it’s everybody else’s fault.
——————————————————-
Nonsense!
Al Davis has made some mistakes, and admitted as much.
……………….
What has he admitted?
He’s admitted to minor things that really aren’t the reason we’ve been losing.
Has he ever admitted blowing it with Gruden, big time?
Has he admitted to blowing it with Marcus Allen, who turned out to not only be the best 3rd down back in football after Al got rid of him, but one of the best 3rd down backs in the history of the game?
Al admits to little things, or he doesn’t specifically point out what he’s to blame for, giving the impression that others are at fault as well as him.
Al has never truly humbled himself and taken the bucks for some of the major blunders that helped result in the disaster he watches over now.

Do you feel targeted by blog management for your opinions?
……….
A few weeks back I put the full court press on Richochet, asking him what business he owns. Banned for a week or so.
About a week ago, I did it again, and I was banned for a couple of days.
For some reason, you start bringing it to Richochet, you’re gone.
====================
Oh stop it, silly child.
LMAO at “full court press”..you mean you followed me like a little puppy, and I ignored you, which is quite easy to do.
You’re incapable of ‘bringing it” and never assume you’re tantamount to more than a flea.
Now, considering I’ve had lengthy drawn out exchanges with many, your silly little whimper about “if you start to bring it with Richo, you’re gone” makes you just about as pathetic as you can be.
Actually though, pretty funny you quivering in your boots.
Of course, when did you, and the other equally disturbed toad, not?
August 24th, 2010 at 6:04 pm
Terrapin,
I like Reese…as a receiving FB. That screen vs. Chi was sweet. I remember he had a nice 20 yrd td vs. Tenn in the preseason a year or so ago. They targeted him in last yrs finale vs. Baltimore, also. Had a nice couple of plays. Seems like a potential weapon.
Needs to improve his blocking though. I think Cable mentioned that in his Q & A the other day. I think coaches might be able to teach blocking techniques. But the willingness to slam ones head into a wall over and over again has to be a mental deficiency that one is born with.
August 24th, 2010 at 6:05 pm
Leaving Reece vs Tonga. I haven’t see anything from our FBs to make me excited about either.
——————————————————-
Really???
You didn’t like the screen to Reece?
No worries, we won’t use that much FB this year anyway.
Did anyone notice the interesting Oline grouping on the first series?
Pears at LT next to Gallery with Carlisle, Henderson, Walker, and Miller lined up next to each other on the right side. Led to a nice 5 yd run by Bush.

I think we need a better blocking FB vs a receiving type. From my standpoint if you’re going to a receiving FB you might as well go Bo Jackson/Marcus Allen on ‘em and put both DMC and Bush in there at the same time.

Of course I expect DHB to be productive so I guess it’s a moot point.
August 24th, 2010 at 6:10 pm
Is there any recievers out there worth pickin up in free agency or Via trade block
August 24th, 2010 at 6:11 pm
Ever consider why DHB seemed to disappear? I think it has to do with why he sat out last week. The coaches saw what you saw and decided to hold him out to prevent dead legs from entering the season. How is there anything wrong with this picture? Happens to running backs all the time. Sure, didn’t happen to Rice as far as I know, but no one is Rice but Rice.
August 24th, 2010 at 6:11 pm
I’m going to go ahead and assume that A.J. Smith won’t deal his star receiver to the Raiders. I’m not-so-secretly hoping I’m wrong. Either way…
Murphy
Crayton
DHB
JLH
Ford
Miller
(Schilens)
Looks pretty good to me.
August 24th, 2010 at 6:12 pm
Here’s what would be a logical solution to our current and most immediate problems:
FB – Reece seems to be doing an ok job, but it’s not the long term answer. SO we either keep him until Lawton can play again, but even then, not sure Lawton is the answer either. Option here is to look in FA or wait for the jets to cut someone, as some people have suggested.
C – We need to sign someone. Now. Or give Veldheer a long look at it. But we need another body in this position as soon as possible.
RT – Walker is serviceable. If Veldheer is the hopeful starter for this position then we need to address C immediately. If not, then let the kid learn.
WR – I think we are better than it may seem here. Starting LM and DHB is ok. Now, if DHB doesn’t show his so called “improvement” by the second game, then put in JLH in there. Remember, we are supposed to be a run first team, and we still got ZM. I personally think our WRs should be LM, DHB, CS, JLH, NM, and JF.
We need to get a much better and closer look at Nick Miller, Jacoby Ford, and Bodiford these next couple games. Ford is pretty much a lock at making the 53, but I would pick Miller over Bodiford and Watkins. Though Watkins seems to be gaining some ground.
On Defense I would also keep Norris and Brown.

We do not need Gaither, his injured back, or his bad attitude.
If he is not good enough or wanted by Baltimore, why would we want him?
Same with anyone else’s hot garbage!
—————–
What do you mean Baltimore doesn’t want him? It’s not like they cut him. He’s still their starting RT, and by far their most consistent lineman. Has been for a few years now. But they have the depth to replace him, and he won’t be able to play for the first couple weeks of the season, which should drive his price down to a later-round pick.
He’s a vast improvement over Langston Walker, who after 8 years in the league still hasn’t mastered the fine art of not jumping the snap count and putting his team in a hole.
The Raiders are in desperate need of help at the tackle position since the backups, Barnes and Pears, have the same problem Walker does.
Gaither’s back injury isn’t severe. He’ll be healthy soon enough to help the Raiders. His bad attitude is likely just because he wants a contract extension, which a new team will give him.
August 24th, 2010 at 6:13 pm
I’d be happy with Tony Richardson and Marcel Reece at FB. Let’s hope the Jets come through on that one…
August 24th, 2010 at 6:13 pm
FB – Reece seems to be doing an ok job, but it’s not the long term answer.
——————————————————-
Why don’t you think Reece is the long term answer? Did he miss some blocks or something?
August 24th, 2010 at 6:13 pm
Lawton damn sure isn’t the answer! He can’t catch block or run and need juice to do it all!

How many penalties did Gallery have this past weekend, lol.
Walker has 1 false start in a preseason game man. After dealing with Cornbread the past few years, I can live with the occasional false start from Walker.
What about all the nice runs to his side this past weekend? 350lbs is going to open some holes.

Be a good test Sat.
Not sure how many starters on both sides will be out, so results might be tainted one way or the other, but Willis will let the oline know where they stand.
Singletary doesn’t seem to be big on having starters out there, regardless of the game, so not even sure if Gore, Crabtree or Davis will be playing.
Hope so in that you want to get a good gauge on where the team stands.
Oline needs to stay out there to get more reps before game 4 resting.
Campbell looked sharp, and comfortable. That cushion Chi gave does wonders for the psyche and confidence level.
Always have mixed feelings on game 3.
You like to see how everyone does, but is it worth an injury?
I lean more towards the “never play an established starter, regardless” in preseason.
Just not worth it, IMO.

John Madden was a very good coach and became agreat one as he held the post. I would not put him in the class of a Bill Walsh or Don Shula. He was working with grat players and should’ve garnered at least 3-4 SB trophies. Some of it was his fault because he ran an average offense that didn’t always attack opponents weaknesses, they won because they had superior talent.
I often wished we had someone who was much more imaginative offensively we would’ve been th most dominant team in history. We also went too many years in his tenure with very average HB’s after Clem Daniels and Charlie Smith got old. Van Eghan and dawing a blank_____ were very average backs. When Flores came along we got Kenny King then Marcus Allen.
Madden had Kenny Stabler who played behind the best Oline in history IMO that’s why we won. Before that Lamonica had a wealth of talent but Lamonica wasn’t what people would consider a great QB he threw a ton of int’s but made up for with his arm and Warren Wells’ speed.
Incidently this team we have right now talent wise has as much talent as some of those great teams but it’s extremely young. It’s only question mark is the Oline if they could pull that together IMO this team could just about do whatever they wanted. DHB has Warren Wells type talent. Jason Campbell is hands down a better QB than Lamonica maybe better than Gannon.

I’m slowly but surely coming around to your side re T Howard. In my case, it’s not so much a knock on Howard. I still think he has value as coverage LB. It’s just that I don’t know who I’d want to see waived to keep him.
I’ve been impressed with Goethel so far. TSN draft guide said some coaching staff would fall in love with his intangibles, but he was too limited athletically to succeed in the pros. So far, I think he looks like a better athlete than advertised.
I want them to keep Q. Groves. I think he is part of the wave of pass rushers Marshall is going to send after QB’s this year.
Like I said earlier, the coverage units look much improved with these youngsters flyin down the field and thumpin people.
I’m not sure where Howard fits in anymore.
August 24th, 2010 at 7:06 pm
Wimbley and McClain look fine in coverage so far.
Howard does not represent much of an increase in productivity int hat regards, and I cringe everytime I think of Howard trying to stop a 3rd and 9 draw.

Agreed JFB!
I don’t miss those ridiculous celebrations from our former LBs.

August 24th, 2010 at 7:16 pm
I am ready to see Veldheer at C at least in the preseason with the 1’s.
Doubt we start him week 1, but would not be suprised if he subs in at halftime week 2, and who knows, maybe he takes the job and runs with it.
Still would prefer Satele to get healthy.

Some of the stuff you say completely stumps me how is T Howard a bust when he had 3 very good years including one great one. Howard is still and outstanding LB in a lot of systems we just had too many problems stopping the run and the way we use our LB’s in a 4/3 overexposes his weakness. He’s just not strong at the POA. In a 3/4 system he’d be awesome. He even still can be a very good WSLB in a 4/3 we just happen to have a better ne who siuts what we want to do. But if T Scott goes down T Howard would be a great replacement now that we have a real MLB.

Priest,
You were pretty critical of Bruce Campbell and his lack of proper technique in his youtube videos.
How do you think he’s looking so far in preseason action? Albeit in 2nd half action vs. backups and other youngsters.
Chi ran some kinda twist/stunt and it looked like maybe he lost his man.
But, overall he looks like he’s acquitted himself quite well. Seems to be getting some movement in the running game, IMO
Watcha think?

Are you serous dude, did you really just write that? LMFAO!
I am guessing you don’t have ANY experance with guys like JR. Oh wait let me guess, you have had MANY, right?
Many of us do not respect our bosses, coaches, teachers, ect… that does not mean we disrespect them, or put them down in front of others, like the whole team. Garcie had a GREAT work ethic! The hope was it would rub off on JR. It did not.
Do you think a guy like DHB, couldn’t learn from a guy like James Jett? Because they are not from the same era?
MR, di dyou play Football? Ever?

Disrespect = to not respect someone. If you don’t respect someone, you hence disrespect them. Some people are more coy than others about expressing their lack of respect for someone.

Have you had any social interactions in the last few years?
Just because you do not “respect” someone, does not mean you ACT disrespectful to them.

Dirty Raccoon, you can make excuses for Al’s laziness all you want. If I owned the Raiders, I would have done a lot more to save Russell. That’s just me.

Is this your way of not answering the question, or are you just being lazy?
Have you “owned”, or “Ran” anything?

DirtyRaccoon Says:

Why not? If someone doesn’t respect you, it’s going to show one way or another. Are you so sensitive as to where you need people who don’t respect you to pretend they do, even when you know they don’t? I’d rather earn their respect. And the bottom line is, Jeff Garcia is NEVER going to earn the respect of someone from Russell’s background. Get a clue.

Do you live a gated communitie? Tell me, what do you know about “people” with backgrounds like JR?
Still waiting.

once you see this kid fulfill some of his immense talent you wont be laughing. If youi notice haven’t said that about Murphy or Chaz nor anyone else at that position. Bcause even as good as Chaz has shown he isn’t that kind of talent but this kid is. Once he gets his confidence up there are not many close talent wise.
BTW I never compared him to Rice, Rice was a different type of talent. Physically speaking Rice doesn’t have that type of talent but Rice was damn near perfect.

The kid needs time to develope he’s got real talent for that spot but he’s green as grass yet. Give ehim this year just to digest what he’s been taught. I think if he continues to work hard at the nuances of the position and get his technigue down he can be great but not right now he’s just learning. So is Veldheer if they are pressed into duty then yeah they’ll survive but you’ll get a kid who’ll struggle at times when you can let the vet have another year and groom both kids no need to rush either of these kids give them a chance to get those positions down and you’ll soon have what you want.
August 24th, 2010 at 7:47 pm
Big tailgate saturday night,..old kell, you show, I will put on your fave,…can of pork n beans, corn bread, instant,…and some Kool Ade…come on old kell, stop by, we can drink, get high,..and we will put on some Lou Rawls for you while you cry about al davis…sound ok?

I don’t think Schilens will be out all that long. Coincidentally, my dad and father-in-law each had foot injuries earlier this year and the same thing happened where they favored their other leg so much they wound up needing arthroscopic knee surgery. The recovery wasn’t that bad for them. They were up and walking around the next day. Granted they didn’t have to test their knees out playing pro football, but they aren’t exactly in NFL athlete-caliber shape, either.
Bottom line: it’s nothing like torn ligament surgery.
Schilens will be done for the preseason and could miss a reg season game or two but I think that’s maximum … as long as there are no other problems in the meantime.

If you Davis’s want to prematurely dish out credit to anyone for this year’s turnaround, it should be the guy who put up that Anti-Davis Billboard.
I think that got the folks attention over there on Harbor Bay Pkway, let them know the status quo was unacceptable. That and the 7 blackouts, of course.

I donated to the funding! I did not agree with the entire message as I like Cable as coach however the GM part sounded nice. However after this offseason I think Al did a damn good job

The status is guo you retard Big Al loked at that billbard farted and kept doing what he was doing. You can rationalize it to make yourself feel like you did something but everything just as it was. He ran the draft and the offseason based on what his coaches said they needed. He got them what they asked for.
Same as always…..

I like what I’ve seen from Campbell. Had a few bigtime pushes that opened things up in the running game (Papa twice falsely credited other linemen for holes opened up by BC on the drive that ended in Boller’s 2-yard QB sneak right behind the rookie right guard).
However, I have a feeling Carlisle is one of Cable’s guys that he sticks with all year until Al Davis steps in. We’ve seen this routine before with Kwame Harris, Fargas and others.
August 24th, 2010 at 9:41 pm
Just watching the Rams vs. Browns game. Both teams look pathetic. Bradford, the #1 QB draftee, looks very raw. He’s reading defenses worse than JaLoser did assuming that’s even possible. All he does is throw 3-5 yard checkdowns. The Browns QB isn’t doing much better. The Brown Rob Ryan defense is well, a Rob Ryan 3-4 defense. Compared to these two teams, we look like SB caliber.
August 24th, 2010 at 9:43 pm
BTW, Howie Long’s kid isn’t doing anything noteworthy. He didn’t do anything last year. I’m glad we didn’t take him. He may have a motor but he doesn’t have the necessary bulk to be a force.
August 25th, 2010 at 12:16 am
Put McFadden in the slot mixed with Higgins and Ford. Put DHB and Murphy outside. McFadden has hands like a reciever and needs to be on the field70% of the time. With Miller at tight end, we can still create mismatches all over the field. What a real NFL QB will allow you to huh Nation!!!!

Whats is so upsetting to most of the people on here is. We all knew we needed to fix both lines before we get too excited. Things are looking up for the raiders but the offensive line is still weak. Center , definitely right tackle and guard are so weak. Al please do some work and get a center for jason and a WR.
