Veldheer on the fast track

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, August 25th, 2010 at 7:52 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Tom Cable is a lot like Bill Callahan when it comes to versatility on the offensive line.

They may not teach the same schemes, but both are of the opinion that having linemen who can switch positions in an instant not only stimulates their ability to learn, but helps the team in the long run.

It’s with that in mind that Jared Veldheer can put himself in position to be the tallest center (6-foot-8) to start an NFL game. A week after getting some snaps at left tackle, against Julius Peppers, no less, Veldheer will start against the 49ers Saturday in place of Samson Satele.

Cable told reporters Wednedsay Satele was questionable with an ankle injury, but he almost certainly won’t play. And it doesn’t really make a lot of sense to start veteran Chris Morris, when Cable can get an idea of whether it’s feasible to make Veldheer a starter as a rookie third-round draft pick out of Hillsdale.

“It’s two different worlds,” Veldheer said in a post-practice interview. “You just have to transition yourself, outside to inside. This week I’ve been able to get back into that inside world more. It will be fun on Saturday.”

The “different worlds” could also apply from Veldheer’s jump from small college star to NFL rookie, but Cable hasn’t seen him back down yet.

“The first thing you look for in a small school guy is, `Is he kind of fearful of competition?,’ ” Cable said. “That’s never once been the case on any day throughout camp.”

Cable said Veldheer has handled the mental challenges of the tackle-to-center switch “very well” and has had no setbacks.

More news, notes and quotes (as relayed by beat writer Steve Corkran):

– For anyone wondering whether perennial Pro Bowl center Kevin Mawae could be in the Raiders’ plans, Cable said, “We’ve never had any discussions about that.”

– Cable hinted the Raiders would game plan more to put players in situations to make roster decisions easier, rather than devise a plan to beat the 49ers. The third regular season game typically is the one that’s a dress rehearsal for the opener. The fact that the two teams play in the regular season is also a factor.

“Because we’re playing them later we probably won’t show everything we normally would,” Cable said.

– Is there a role for linebacker Thomas Howard, or will the Raiders be looking to get something for him at the final cutdown day?

Cable, asked about Howard’s standing, said, “I think we’ll know more after we get through this one. I’m not trying to avoid the question. I just think that the way this game is set up and some of the things that well be doing defensively we’ll have a chance to see where he is at.”

Like, perhaps, put hoping Howard has a big enough game so that he can at least bring back a draft choice.

– Cable on whether Chaz Schilens could be ready for the opener: “I don’t know that yet. They’re telling us we can probably answer that question the first of next week.”

– Bruce Gradkowski, when asked about the young receiving corps, did the only sensible thing _ give them a public vote of confidence.

“I’m confident in all our receivers,” Gradkowski said. “They do a great job. I don’t know how many we’ll keep, but it’s always tough. . . . I’m proud o fthose guys and we’ve just got to keep going and finish this out right.”

– Hue Jackson, talking to the media? He jokingly took the podium today before walking away. Unless they’re serving him up Thursday as camp breaks, he’ll probably talk to the media for the first time in Alameda. The Raiders have taken advantage of vague league guidelines in the preseason which request reasonable access by not making him available at all. Once the regular season begins, they’re required to make Jackson available to the media on a regular basis or be subject to a fine.

– The Raiders hold their final practice of the Napa training camp Thursday at 8:30 a.m. and then get out of town. The Raider Nation Celebration will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Frank Ogawa Plaza in downtown Oakland.

– According to my transcript, the first words out of Cable’s mouth were, “Where is McDonald? He’s just taking time off. He’s got David White disease.”

I don’t know about the David White thing, but I have felt “fatigued” lately.

    Think about it, 6′7″-325#, 6′8″-315#, 6′8″-360#, that’s a lot of beef in the middle if we start Gallery, Veldheer & Walker at LG, C & RG respectively. I don’t see any pass rush getting by that group. Likewise, if they want to move the middle. the middle is going to move. Bush, Bennett, Cartwright will all benefit from that grouping. JCampbell will also have time to find his new receivers. We just need to remember, games are won in the pits. We need the biggest baddest big uglies and we should fare well.

    The problem with Fairy Tail Football is it causes the NFL to promote individuals rather than teams as a whole. That’s why we saw the Forte run played so much on espn, even though the Raiders mostly dominated in that game. In that way, Fantasy football is putting an end to “team affiliation”, and people are just rooting for individual efforts.
    I personally prefer to root for a team as a whole, as opposed to an individual effort. That’s where the Bengals made a mistake – Instead of lacing his meager contract with incentives based on personal achievement, they should have put in intensives such as a 8 win bonus, a 10 win bonus, playoff bonus, Div. Champion Bonus, SB Bonus. That way he would be most concerned about what is best for the team as a whole, rather than his individual numbers.
    I would rather see the Raiders win the SB, and have nobody in the pro-bowl – rather than watch the raiders lose while I win my Fairy Tale League

    If DMac can’t play then maybe there should be some serious talk about renegotiating his contract. His tenure as a Raider is nothing to write home about The only difference between he & Schilens is the draft round selected & the $ size of the contract. Aside from those two items they appear to be two athletes who appear to have great potential but are both very injury-prone. This should be a make-break year for both of them. If they don’t perform cut your losses and move on. It’s just like with JaLoser – addition by subtraction. The day of the check is in the mail has gotten old. Pay up or hit the road. We don’t have time for boat anchors of any type.

    BUt Jerry made a good point in that Chaz’s contract is so cheap vs his potential, it’s really costing us nothing to keep him around.

    I’m inclined to agree with you from an outside looking in perspective. And under normal circumstances that would be the case.

    But remember, Cable stated that most of his height is in his torso. If the coaches are doing their job, teaching him proper leverage, and he continues to display the high football IQ and good attitude that he has displayed so far, there’s no reason that he can’t be successful.

    As far as playing against Abreyo Franklin, well Veldheer has the advantage of going against Seymour, Kelly and Henderson regularly in practice, who are no scrubs by any stretch of the imagination. So if he is preparing properly in practice and the film room, I think he’ll be good to go.

    Listen man I would be scared to have O’Dowd from USC who’s been playing C for 4 years starting in the opener. This kid has been playing C for 4 months and you guy’s have gone gaga over this fresh faced rookie.

    He ’s going to have to pick up blitzes and the shortest way to the QB is straight up the middle where Campbell has to step up and throw. And you guy’s want this kid to start vs the Titans. I’m wondering what hav you seen from him this preseason that makes you think he is this great C it boggles my mind. I’ve watched him and I like his spirit but that aint near enough for me to want to see him start against anyone.

    You may be right Priest but Satele doesn’t hold up against anybody. I believe you will find this kid to be a quick learner. He may get his lunch handed to him the first or second time but from then on out he be the one handing out the ass kicking. He learn technique with good coaching and diligent film study. He’s got the tool to get it done. Satele doesn’t even have a toolbox.

    You seem very sure about this kid so I can only hope you’re right and I’m wrong. But I do know this Satele is a hell of a lt better than you guy’s think he is. Veldheer stating says volumes about Morris and nothing about Satele. I think and the film verifies everything I’m saying Satele has had a very good camp. Satele can play that position and play it very well, you guy’s are crazy I’m not sure what you’re all passing around but this stuff is not that hard for anyone who knows what to look for to see.

    This is the Veldheer fan club I get it, same as the DMC fan club. The kid has shown he’s worthy of a 3rd rnd pick that’s all. I’m not WOW’d by him I don’t see anything extraordinary he just looks like a player. Nothing special every year you guy’s jump smeones jock with a bunch o groundless rhetoric. Honestly, as much as you defend Satele, think about this…

    If he and Morris were doing a satisfactory at Center, would this conversation even come up? Would the idea of a rookie unseating two veterans even be a topic of consideration?

    The answer is obviously no. Satele and Morris are not up to par. Cable sees it, the Miami Dolphins saw it(about Satele), and most of us fans see it.

    An interesting approach, 5 tackles for the O-line. We need to do whatever we can to make sure the best talent available to us is starting. It’s not about names or years of service. It’s all about getting the job done to the best of our ability. In today’s NFL, a lot of rookies start their first year and most do a fairly respectable job for a newbie. A respectable job would be a step up for our O-line. We now have some new tools in our bag. They’re not going to do us any good unless we use them.

    The last time I looked the coaches aren’t starting the rook to unseat the starter. The starter is injured. Unless of course, Satele was doing a better acting job than George Clooney out there. Last time I looked, Satele started the lst two preseason games. If Veldheer could have done a better job out the gate, they would have had him in there from the beginning.

    Veldheer is a good prospect with a huge amount of upside and potential.

    WE honestly don’t know whether he can handle the pressure of being the starting center RIGHT NOW. That’s why he’s starting in the next PRESEASON game.

    That way his progressed can be gauged and assessed and if he is entrusted with the starting spot come Game 1 of the regular season, he can make the adjustments and corrections now rather than later.

    Not true Just Win. Veldheer is playing a new position at Center. So logically he had to LEARN to play the position. So of course they wouldn’t throw him out there in the beginning.

    But he did play the backup Center position in game 1 against Dallas, and obviously he did quite well, and has been doing well in practice as well.

    That is why he’s being asked to start at Center now in place of the injured Satele.

    Now if Veldheer plays well, the true test will be if he keeps the starting spot when Satele comes back from his injury.

    Most of us just want to SEE what Veldheer can do at C since the COACH put him there. If it were the Veldheer fan club as you say, then we would be saying he should start at LT where he was 2nd string, and the guy in front of him was not good by all accounts.

    But no, we recognize Henderson has been playing well so far so he should not start in front of him at LT. Satele and Carlisle in most folks opinion are the weak links of this Oline. They are average at best.

    The C position requires a lot of leverage and if he let’s DT’s get under him there is no way he’ll hold up. He has a tall torso which is a negative at that position, powerful DT’s will abuse him if he can’t get low enough. So before we put this kid in the HOF let him show you something first………..

    All what accolades???

    Yes I say Satele is not playing well. The coach even said he was not happy with the Oline. Who do YOU think he is talking about if not Satele and Carlisle.

    I’ve said over and over that Satele and Carlisle are average. I am excited about the prospects of the 2 rookies and think they can also be average at best right now. Average is not an accolade bruh. But I’ll take the average rookies and their on the job training vs. average vets that have hit their ceiling.

    Satele and Carlisle are making mistakes out there. If you can’t see that you are NOT watching the game.

    =======================================================
    Priesttj,

    Reluctantly…I have to agree with you. I hope we are both very wrong on this one. But this one seems to good to be true.

    Center is a tough position man. Line protection calls, audibles etc…..whew…

    My biggest concern remains the fact that the kid has probably rarely faced 300lb+ guys in college. Now, if he has been lining up against Kelly, Seymour, Henderson or Heard…then he’s got some under his belt…but not much and not in live fire with the full complexities the defense will give in the regular season.

    I am hoping this works…..just on paper it doesn’t look good.

    You all be patient with this kid if he struggles!

  72. Just Win Says:

    We all want every single position to be upgraded on the entire Raider roster. The offensive line has played fairly well this preseason. I can’t wait to see what the rook can do at center myself but I am not holding my breath that this guy is going to turn into Nick Mangold over night while learning a new position at this level.

    Preseason is a totally different animal than the regular season.

    Again, I believe these Veldheeris going to struggle mightily. And that may be fine if he is the long-term answer at “center”

    But you all better expect a lot of learning opportunities for a kid who 8 months ago was manning left tackle against Northern Michigan

  77. hendu Says:

    j Wiggle, wish DMC had some wiggle! But I like VH,lets give the kid two pre season games

  78. Raider O Says:

    I think it will be easier to switch Veldherer to RT since be played LT at college, but if the Kid can play C, then why not? We need a C.

  79. RaiderLen Says:

    I can live with rookie mistakes if I know that improvement / growth is taking place.

    When Vets are making rookie like mistakes, and I know that it’s as good for them as it will ever get, then play to the upside of the young ones.

    I’m as interested in seeing the kid as anyone maybe more because I can’t stand Morris who’s serviceable at best. But I’m not ready to put this kid on some pedestal bcause of some damn witch hunt on Satele.

    Oline play is more about cohesion than individual dominance. Although greatness anywhere helps is Satele a great C no………is he a good one? you damn right he is and he can get much better.

    Lets just watch the kid and see what he had and let that talk for him.

    =======================================================

    He will struggle. But Satele is struggling and so is Morris. And they’re veterans. At this stage of the game Satele and Morris are as good as they’re going to get.

    Veldheer does not get manhandled at the line of scrimmage, that much we can see already.

    The fact that a rookie is even being considered right now at this level shows that his learning curve is light years ahead of Satele and Carlisle.

    Even if Veldheer is not ready right now, which he obviously is not, he will definitely be ready before the end of this season, while Satele and Morris are still whiffing on tackles and getting blown 3-5 yards off the line of scrimmage.

  84. Raider O Says:

    Cable is an idiot, if he is happy with Satele!
    Satele, Cooper, and Walker have to be replaced!

  85. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    Priesttj,

    Agreed on post #83.

    Satele was “serviceable”….rookies are going to be rookies.

    Also, its not just how he handles his man…but how he calls protetions etc….

    If Cable pulls this off…he’s a helluva a position coach.

    The kid is going to struggle in the regular season…be patient with him and the offense

  86. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    ArmChairGM,

    I’ll be more convinced if he holds his own this weekend after a half of play.

    Like I said before, those struggles might be 2x worse than Satele’s struggles.

    Be ready…if that O-line struggles…the offense will look like shhhhhhhhh

  87. Raider O Says:

    I like to see what V can do at RT, but I’m so sick of Satele that I’m willing to support V playing C.
    Beast Campbell needs to develop ASAP so he can start.

  88. lefty12 Says:

  93. Just Win Says:

    Some of you guys just break me up. I have read a lot of comments about how it is nice to see us running screen plays, but no one mentions how well Satele plays on those screen passes. On the lst down screen to Marcel Reece in the last game, Satele LAYS A GUY OUT downfield, which makes the lst down.
    Also, Satele only started 3 quarters of the year last year, and did not have Gallery for even half the season. Think having arguably one of the best Olinemen in the league makes a difference in how any center would play?

  94. ArmChair GM Says:

    This is the bottom line:

    Satele, Morris, Schilens, Mcfadden, and DHB are perhaps the most criticized and maligned players on our roster.

    I will never root against them while they are on the field. However if they are underperforming, then I will support a change being made to someone more capable of getting the job done.

    I believe that based on what he has shown in a matter of a few weeks, Veldheer is more promising than both Satele and Morris. But he has to go out there and prove it.

    I’m rooting for the kid, but we all have to just wait and see.

    But I do know this:

    If he isn’t up to the challenge, and we don’t trade for another starting center, our O-line is in serious trouble.

  95. J Wiggle Says:

  112. JB Says:

    With an O-line of Henderson, Gallery, Veldher, Walker & BCampbell, I know I’m getting ahead of myself, our odds of being able to make 1-2 yards on a line plunge would seem to have improved dramatically.

    +++++++++++++===

    KOR – JFORD
    PR – JFORD

  122. Raider O Says:

    I like Ford a lot, and I wanted us to draft him. He can do both. Let him compete with JLH & N Miller.

    Brotha you don’t know Oline play, that first drive by Satele was very well played only one play DT slips him but the ball is out. The rest of that drive hgis C play was as good as you could ask for while he isn’t a dmiant C this system doesn’t require that. It’s ZBS they want the man moved laterally not backwards.

    Now I understand why you say what you say you just don’t understand what you’re looking at.

    You are right. That would be a HUGE line. Walker would just need to get in the way pas blocking and road grade the center of the field on run plays up the gut.

    Henderson 6′7″-300#
    Gallery 6′7″- 325#
    Veldheer 6′8″- 315#
    Walker 6′8″- 360#
    BCampbell 6′6″- 315#

    That’s an average of 6′7.5″- 323#

    I’m watching the 2nd series the DT has to get his hands up because he can’t get penetration. Next play he keeps the DT from penetration until the ball is out.

    I think what you expect is for a him to just pancake guy’s play after play and drive players back 5 yards every play. If that’s what you expect get ready to be very disappointed by any player. Because that’s damn near impossible.

    What you want is for the QB to get 2.5 seconds to get the ball out anything longer than that is gravy.

    J Wiggle this is the NFL man both players get paid and unreal expectations go unfulfilled.

  140. JB Says:

    KK
    Gallery should make the Pro Bowl this year. He has gotten to be very good at his job. There’s nothing wrong at excelling at a position other than the initial planned spot. Another good example of that could be Todd Christensen – a RB converted to TE. MHenderson is young and coming along just fine. Let’s not replace him yet.

    We just need to find out where our new prospects can excel and then give them the opportunity to be all they can be. This is a god problem to have. It’s about time we have some new talented blood.

  141. JB Says:

    Does anyone know for sure that the drafting of Veldheer wasn’t for the C position all along? I certainly don’t. Maybe the coaches and personnel people, this time around, saw something we didn’t. Who knows, this may have been their plan all along.

  142. priesttj Says:

  144. JB Says:

    Currently, Gallery IMO, is the best O-lineman we have. In my view, he’s one of the top guards playing. He did have some injuries last year so that might have skewed some numbers. Overall, he’s a definite keeper.

  145. priesttj Says:

    Who cares about AV don’t you watch this game or does someone have to tell you everything?

  146. KoolKell Says:

    Another Gallery consideration, he’s been required to play using that crappy ZBS blocking. That doesn’t play to his real strength. He’s a born power blocker. Now that we are getting back to mano v. mano power blocking, Gallery will be recognized as a real force.

  148. JB Says:

    I agree with TJ on this one. The numbers you are referring to don’t tell the whole story regarding this player.

Meanwhile, let’s just hope he stays healthy all year. TJ was right, When he went out the line turned to total crap. When Walker backfilled for him line play improved. that’s why I think Walker’s future lies at the RG. position.

    I predict that the first quarter tomorrow night will feature strong Raider defense. Beyond that, regardless of whether we win or lose, it could turn out to be one of the uglier preseason games of all. I just hope Grads doesn’t do any chest-bumping and put himself on IR!

    I meant Saturday night!

    Good Morning Nation!!!
    What? Bobby’s back? Haha…
    As Saturday nears…

  172. RaiderRockstar Says:

    Quarterback Bruce Gradkowski got some of his most extensive work in training camp, closing it out with a 40-yard post strike to Todd Watkins, who made a diving catch for a touchdown. Gradkowski ran the length of the field for a chest bump with Watkins after the play.

    Bruce & Todd = makers

    Colt & little Nicky = practice squad

  173. RaiderRockstar Says:

    Cornerback Chris Johnson, defensive end Alex Daniels, defensive end Jay Richardson, Schilens and Satele did not practice.

    Players who returned included right tackle Langston Walker and defensive tackle Richard Seymour.

    ***

    glad big Langston is back!

    I could care less about Dick Seymour playing in 2 preseason games … he’ll be ready when it matters (same with John Henderson)

    Kelly, Bryant & Joseph need more work anyways

  174. raidertbone Says:

    I want to see Alex Daniels maul a few Niners as a lead blocker for Bennett and Bush. Let’s hope DHB gets at least two catches!

  175. RaiderRockstar Says:

    Good news for Veldheer _ with 49ers nose guard Aubrayo Franklin deciding not to immediately sign his franchise tender, the opposition will be the less imposing Ricky Jean-Francois.

    ***

    bad news for Raider fans, Veldhero beating up on RJF means nothing

    Veldy holding his own against Aubrayo Franklin would be awesome, considering I strongly doubt Satele would be effective against him

    Jared the Giant needs to start next week at home against Seattle too. kid has serious potential anywhere on the line imo

  176. raidertbone Says:

    Give Veldheer a break. Not working against a premier defender will give him a chance to bond with the QB, get his timing down and build his confidence up … I see this as a win-win.

    It’s been coming for a while, and it looks like it’s about to happen.

    Rookie Maurkice Pouncey, expected to be a guard at least for a year, apparently has supplanted Justin Hartwig as the Steelers’ starting center.

    Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Pouncey took all of the first-team reps during practice on Wednesday, for the first time.

    “It put a big smile on me,” Pouncey said following practice. “I ain’t going to lie, but I just need to go out there and practice every day. I want to stay humble. I’m happy about it. I just want to stay humble and keep working at it.”

    Bouchette explains that the Steelers coaching staff was “blown away” by Pouncey’s first two practices on the first day of training camp. At that point, they reconsidered the plan to allow the first-round pick to compete at right guard.

    Meanwhile, the guy who’ll be headed to the bench — and possibly out of town — didn’t want to talk about the latest development. Per Bouchette, Hartwig wouldn’t take questions about Pouncey’s ascension to the starting lineup in Hartwig’s spot.

    Here’s what Hartwig said eight days ago, once Pouncey started to get reps with the first-team offense: “I’ve been playing football for a long time and I’ve worked my butt off and I do my job every day, and that’s not going to change based on somebody pushing me for my starting spot. I’m going to continue to do what I’ve been doing and everything will play itself out.”

    The next question becomes whether the Steelers will pay Hartwig $2.08 million to sit on the bench, or whether they’ll try to trade him.

  182. Plunketthead Says:

    Trade some mickeyD cheeseburgers and a bucket of KFC
    for a Hartwig

  183. Plunketthead Says:

    Whats the over/under on games McNabb will play this year?

    I think they will be lucky if he starts 10 games

  184. edward teach Says:

    Priest,

    Cable not coming out right now and saying that Satele and Morris aren’t getting the job done means nothing.

    He didn’t say anything about Howard and Morrison last year, but he sure had something to say after the season was over and they were replaced.

  185. edward teach Says:

    Plunketthead,

    I remember not too very long ago when certain people in here told me I was an idiot for suggesting that a center be taken in the first round.

    My response was to talk to me after somebody took Pouncey.

    Well, here I am.

  186. RaiderRockstar Says:

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Well, if Cable says that they had no discussion about Kevin Mawae…hard to believe that Harwig will be considered. However, I say why not? It really can’t hurt!
  191. Plunketthead Says:
    I wanted Al to trade down and try to get offensive help
    Maurice would have gone great with Ryan Matthews and Bush. Trade DMAC for a RG/RT and things would be looking much better……..on O.
    Lets just hope that the Mac/Lamarr? make it worthwhile.
    The O will have to wait
    JR and DMAC were the right picks at the time, They both looked amazing in tryouts. Its real tough for a team to have busts in consecutive years with that high picks unless you hail from Detroit.
    Maybe we can salvage DMAC but he cant stay healthy
  192. J Wiggle Says:
    Justin Hartwig ???
    —————————————————–
    I’m pretty sure he is no better than Satele. His position was drafted in the 1st rd and that guy has already taken his job. He can’t be any good.
  193. neilb Says:
    Morning Hwnrdr….
    I can see the point behind it.The owners want to make money.The problem I see is more meaningless games in December and more injured players.The only way it might work is with bigger squads but I can’t see the owners doing that.
  194. Plunketthead Says:
    Rock
    I was gonna look up his age before I brought it up and I decided not to thinking he was not very old
    32 is old for a center although it sure sounds like we will have to do something
    Mornin’ Y’all: Plunk, Hwn,Neil, J, and RR.
    How’s Thangs?
  196. Bob Marley Says:
    I like it, JV has a future and it can’t hurt to let him start against a real good defense like SF, even without Franklin, it’s a tough matchup.
    By the way, I think he did ok last week vs Peppers, for a kid coming from Hillsdale College, wherever that is, to see his first meaningful action against an all-pro caliber 6′7 290 DE was a huge challenge, the kid had some issues but even the best LT out there will have some trouble keeping Peppers away from his QB.
  197. neilb Says:
    Morning BigTed….
    Last nightshift tonight then I’m off work till Tuesday……so I’m very happy!
  198. Plunketthead Says:
    Neil
    that pretty much sums it up.
    More games means more sundays for us to follow the game
    But it comes with plenty of problems. Its all the unintended consequences that may make it worse for fans and players.
  199. neilb Says:
    I think Veldheer will do just fine.Bloke seems to have his $hit together.
  200. hwnrdr Says:
    Good Afternoon (on your part of the world) Neil,
    Yes…I can actually see more injuries in December than meaningless games though.
  201. hwnrdr Says:
    Good Morning Big Ted!
    Marley…I agree, goven time, I think JV will be that utility player … or maybe even the next Barrett Robbins (Sorry, he’s no Barrett, but can he be?)
  202. bcz24 Says:
    I say we cut the regular season down to 4 games, no preseason. The other 12 games + playoffs will be played on the PS3 Madden of that year. This way we dont have to worry about the players getting hurt… the greed is showing through if you ask me. They players arent saying they wont play an 18 game schedule… they are just saying they wont play 18 games for without being paid more. The owners are at fault for letting these contracts sky rocket to such exorbitant amounts.
  203. neilb Says:
    Plunkettnead….
    I hope they think it all the way though.
  204. neilb Says:
    I like the idea Bcz24!
    Greed and ego’s if you ask me.
  205. Plunketthead Says:
    I would rather the NFL add one more game and seek revenue elsewhere. They already milk ticket holders to the bone.
    I would pay 10 to 20 to watch the game on the one eyed hypnotist sitting in my layzboy.
    Especially if the NFL network spiked it up by letting us watch warmups, more interviews, taking us closer to the locker room, aftergame PC, etc.
  206. Lakota Says:
    Now we just need a Cooper Carlisle rolled ankle and the line will be much better off one way or another.
    The Raiders released running back Justin Fargas in hopes of creating more opportunities for McFadden and Michael Bush, who is considered stronger between the tackles and better-built to be an every-down back. McFadden has surpassed 14 carries just twice in 25 career games, in part because of health issues.
  209. CJ Legend 34 Says:
    I think it is time for big John Henderson (6′7″ 335) to have a big game. What has he done to save his spot on the team?
    If he does not get his $#!T together I am going to gangster slap his @$$!!!!!!!
    That should get his motor going.
    I wouldn’t say they are resting him, and now that I think about it, he may not be safe.
    He is the 3rd NT on the depth chart behind Kelly and Bryant. No way he gets snaps at the 3 tech which is why Joseph was in the game before him.
    If they are intent on keeping Bryant at NT, Henderson might be in trouble.
  217. BigTed707 Says:
    Maybe if it goes to 18 games, the league would allow more than 53 players per team, to compensate for “fatigue”.
    I’m OK with watching more games, I just hope that players will be able to stay healthy.
    Chad Ochocinco’s day job might be NFL wide receiver, but at this point he’s more entrepreneur than professional football player. The Pro Bowler often seems busier away from the game than he does preparing for it.
    If it’s not UStream or “Dancing With the Stars,” or his own news network, Ochocinco is making things that make our lives easier. In theory, anyway. Last year, he revealed the prototypes for prophylactics bearing his name (they’re still in the development phase*), and now comes word of his latest endeavor: Ochocincos. That’s right, Chad has his own cereal.
    Via Sports Business Digest by way of PLBSports:
    “Chad is a great personality, and with his involvement in social media and his interaction with the fans, he was an athlete that we were very excited to work with,” said PLB Sports President Ty Ballou. “One way or another, America has learned and is continuing to learn more about Chad Ochocinco off the field, and they’re finding out how great he is. Who wouldn’t want to share a breakfast table with him?”
    So if you live in Newport, Kentucky or have internet access you too can get your mitts on some “low fat food” goodness (note to manufacturers: might want to include a hyphen between “low” and “fat” just so there’s no confusion).
  221. CJ Legend 34 Says:
    Yeahman it is hard to tell. Maybe the coaches have seen more of Henderson at practice then we have to make that call but Bryant did not do a bad job in there. Plus, Bryant has an upside not the same case for Henderson.
  225. RaiderRockstar Says:
    what up Thec?
    sounds like I missed some good convo RE: John Henderson & Cooper Carlisle
    My thoughts are Carlisle will start 16 games (barring injury) and my favorite offseason addition big John is in trouble
    Cable says BCamp isn’t even close to being ready and as Jwigg points out … Jhenderson is the 4th DT in the rotation and has battled through a few camp injuries (shoulder, knee) seems to sit out every other practice which reminds me of Lorenzo Neal last year
    Henderson in his prime was great and I still think that if fully healthy he can be a monster in the middle. that is the sole purpose of him being here. is William Joseph ready to peak in his 7th or 8th season? doubtful, but if he gives us more than JH it’s a no brainer
    I personally would rather keep Henderson for 10-20 snaps per game and hope he stays healthy than have a guy like Bryant, Joseph or Heard and try to polish a turd
    BART Bridge Blues – I agree man. I just get this feeling we should carry 4 RBs this year. DMC is bound to get hurt, which would put us 1 injury to Michael Bush away from being in trouble. Especially if Bennett is a better runner than Cartwright and we keep Cartwright over Bennett because of his ST skills.
  274. RaiderRockstar Says:
    Williams & Stewart are in a similar situation
    both good on ST. both good locker room guys
    neither contributes much on offense/defense
  275. BART Bridge Blues Says:
    yeah, I am glad somebody else is seeing this problem in our RB unit. McFadden can’t run between the tackles, he is more of our x-factor guy. So we have just Bush as our primary running back, and he will need to be spelled due to injury or “fatigue” at several points during a 16-game season. Just having Rock Cartwright behind him isn’t enough. Our offense will live or die on the running game this season, we need to have fresh legs.
  276. The Big Banana Says:
    Speculation is that Jason Davis will be the FB the Jets will cut.
  277. RaiderRockstar Says:
    McFadden can’t run between the tackles
    ***
    find a quote from Al Davis or ANY Raider coach that has EVER said that …
    the Raiders can’t run up the gut because they’ve had guys like Satele & Morris at Center since DMAC was drafted. Guys like Lawton & Reece at FB. Guys like Russell & Gradkowski at QB. 8 man fronts, zero threats at WR. predictable offensive gameplans, etc
    biggest knocks on DMAC are durability & fumblitis. they’ve been working on ball security this offseason and McFadden has been held out of practice or preseason games every time he coughs or sneezes by Cable as a “precaution”
  278. Ryan Says:
    Mike and Mike’s radio show this morning picked the Oakland Raiders to be a suprise playoff team!
    The Raiders are treating DMAC like San Diego treated LT. Hear is hoping DMAC becomes an LT.
  281. bcz24 Says:
    Im hoping DMAC becomes a good enough RB to carry LT’s jockstrap!
  282. RaiderRockstar Says:
    truth be told, the Raiders REALLY should have signed Thomas Jones …
    I don’t think they wanted anybody to compete with the McBush show though.
    Jones would run for 1500 yards and the other guys would combine for 500.
  283. The Big Banana Says:
    RR – Run DMC gets tripped up by the hash marks, let alone those big fellas in the middle. They so much as breath on him and he goes down. Davis and the coaches would never admit or announce something like that even if they wholeheartedly agreed with the assessment.
    That being said, the durability issue alone is enough to warrant a 4th RB.
  290. The Big Banana Says:
    BSJ – lol..you know it! He’s one more injury ridden season away from me declaring him a waste of a roster space.
  291. Raider Dell Says:
    Let me drop in this discussion on the OL.
    Typically the game day lineup will be 8 lineman, on the 46 game day roster.
    With that in mind, the remaining three lineman must be able to swing, to different positions on the line, due to a injury.
    Let’s look at the remaining players.
    As much as you all believe Morris is gone, he has so much versatility, that he would be hard to cut. Morris can play, LG, RG, C, and a little unknown fact is, he is our back-up LS and short snap, if Condo ever got injured.
    That may not be as important , because Zach Miller has been practicing LS, and short snap also. Do you risk Zach Miller getting hurt on ST.
    Campbell, is working at RG. I don’t see the Raider organization messing with him. Campbell has to get used to playing inside and he is very raw. Campbell will make the 53 team roster, but may be off the game day suited 46. Haven’t seen Campbell on special teams either.
    Barnes, can play LT, RT, and maybe some guard, I just don’t think he likes to be inside. Barnes can swing to replace a injured LT, RT and has special teams value also.
    Veldheer, can play LT and were seeing him play center. Looks like to me the Raider organization has planned for him to be the back up at center. Veldheer is athletic and strong enough to play against the NT, but can he play low and make all the protection calls for the OL. This weekend will be a big test for Veldheer.
    Pears, has mobility and is a ZBS lineman, he can play both the LT, RT and in a pinch last year a servicable tight end, if they want a exta blocker, or fills in for an injury. Pears also played last year on special teams.
    The players who start can also play multiple positions, as noted Walker, RT, LG. Gallery LG, LT, Satele, C and RG, and Carlisle and Henderson are the two that, I haven’t seen in any other position.
    So the final roster of players, have to be able to, play multiple positions and a big extra plus is, can they be on some special teams.
  292. niceguymoe Says:
    Draft will stay as scheduled. No defensive players.
    The draft will go fast. Most of the guys who are in the league have ranked by position their players and will be fast. The draft sems to slow down for the remaining few bench players, which usually takes a lil more time.
    I think Thomas Howard and Mike Mitchell are the same player wearing different numbers. You can cut either one, cause they do the same thing.   303. TheyCallMeAssassin Says:
    I still think Thomas Howard should be packaged with lower draft picks and shipped off for some o-line help. It sounds like they’re going to give him his fair share of playing time against the 49ers and see if he can raise his trade value…
    I thought Morrison & Howard were fine, but obviously the coaching staff (and my buddy Jwigg) felt differently. I thought the problem was more with that 3rd LB Brown/Williams/Alston and the DT’s Warren/Kelly
    we moved Scott to WLB (Howard’s old spot) last year
    traded for Wimbley & Groves
    tendered Ricky Brown – 2nd round
    re-signed Sam Williams
    drafted Travis Goethel
    I hope they don’t trade Thomas Howard, because some excellent offenses like the Patriots and Saints will see that between Asmougha, CJ, Seymour and Houston our weakness is covering in the middle of the field. We got a bunch of undersized, pass-rushing DE’s playing OLB, and when someone like Tom Brady is pulling the trigger at QB he will pick those guys apart, well before Scott or Wimbley get anywhere near him. Howard gives us so much diversity on defense.
