Veldheer to start at center
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, August 25th, 2010 at 5:55 pm in Oakland Raiders.
A few post-practice notes as relayed by beat writer Steve Corkran:
– Jared Veldheer worked with the first team at center and will start against the 49ers, essentially auditioning for the starting job with Samson Satele out with an ankle injury.
Good news for Veldheer _ with 49ers nose guard Aubrayo Franklin deciding not to immediately sign his franchise tender, the opposition will be the less imposing Ricky Jean-Francois.
– Coach Tom Cable said he’d have a better idea by next week of Chaz Schilens might be available for the season opener in Tennessee on Sept. 12.
– Cable said this year’s roster cut will be the most difficult since he arrived in 2007.
– Cornerback Chris Johnson, defensive end Alex Daniels, defensive end Jay Richardson, Schilens and Satele did not practice.
Players who returned included right tackle Langston Walker and defensive tackle Richard Seymour.
It’s conceivable Seymour, as well as Darren McFadden and Johnson, could all be held out of the 49ers game.
– Quarterback Bruce Gradkowski got some of his most extensive work in training camp, closing it out with a 40-yard post strike to Todd Watkins, who made a diving catch for a touchdown. Gradkowski ran the length of the field for a chest bump with Watkins after the play.
More to come later . . .

sweet, if Veldheer can pull out the job I believe we can be one step closer to solidifying the line. Then Campbell would need to step up at RG.
That said I’m sure Cable will go for best available, not just a strict youth movement.

It’s preseason; you want those battles for your young guys so that they get as much exposure to that level of play as they can before the shooting starts for real. Only way to learn.

USC A.D. seems to say Bush should return Heisman
Posted by Mike Florio on August 25, 2010 1:56 PM ET
Recently, USC Athletic Director Pat Haden said that Saints running back Reggie Bush told him that Bush would return the 2005 Heisman Trophy “if he could.” Today, Haden essentially told Dan Patrick that Bush should give it back.
John Taylor of CFT has the details.
Your move, Reggie

This is not normally news except in the case of the Raiders, who essentially have had the same uniforms since Al Davis swallowed the team in 1963. The only real innovation, if you want to call it that, was changing the white uniform’s numerals from black with silver trim to silver with back trim in the early 1970s. Their throwback uniforms are their current uniforms, and their current uniforms look just as good on a black-and-white TV as they do in HD.
Unless …
Unless the Raiders really are going to go full throwback and wear their true, original pre-Al duds. The plain black helmets. The gold trim rather than the silver. The rounded numbers and the three sleeve and stocking stripes. Maybe even the original logo, courtesy Remembertheafl.com, of the Raider with a mustache from the few days before the Raiders were the Raiders.
When they were the Oakland Señors.
This seems like such a small thing, but the idea that the Raiders might reference the dark ages before Davis is so radical that it makes the league’s decision to notice the Raiders at all seem tepid by comparison.
Raiders history, after all, is Al history, and the first three years of Raiders history were supervised by one of Al’s early enemies, Wayne Valley. They weren’t good years, to be sure – nine wins in three years, three different coaches, and three different homes. Indeed, the franchise would not have existed at all had the NFL not decided to put an expansion team in Minneapolis. The AFL originally wanted to put the Raiders’ franchise there, and turned to Oakland only after the Vikings were born.
But once Al was lured by Valley to save the team from the verge of extinction, the clock was restarted, and nothing that happened pre-Al ever existed, except when it could be used to gild the Davis lily.
Fair enough. The winners always write the history books, and the Davis Raiders did more than enough to get away with obscuring the early results by winning as often as they did. The gold vanished, the black helmets vanished, and the Señors never actually made it past the consideration stage.
In other words, the opener would be the perfect time to bring it all back. Having begun as dramatic agents of change, the Davis Raiders have been more resistant to it than any other franchise. Going to a throwback outfit that is the same as the standard duds is to waste a rare opportunity to show that the franchise is actually capable of a sense of humor.
And hey, if the original uniform was good enough for Jim Otto, how can it be wrong for the current crop of non-Hall of Famers?
We await developments. That is, if there are developments to await. We’d love to think the Raiders are willing to play along with the rest of the party, but it has been so long since they’ve gotten into the spirit of anything whimsical like throwback jerseys that this just might be one more view of the same old, same old. Two words that have been killing them for the last six years: “same” and “old.”
August 25th, 2010 at 6:43 pm
“once Al lured the team from Valley”. lol. Another hack afraid of Al.

August 25th, 2010 at 6:52 pm
F. Wayne Valley (1914–1986) was an American businessman, philanthropist and football player. He attended Oregon State University in the 1930s, where he was a starting linebacker and fullback on the Oregon State Beavers football team, though he would ultimately graduate with a business degree from the University of Oregon.[1][2] He would later go on to a successful career in the homebuilding industry, starting his first building business in the late 1940s. His businesses were based in the East Bay city of San Leandro, California where he lived. He and his family later moved to Piedmont, California in the late 1960s.
He was one of the original owners of the Oakland Raiders football team, and a founding member of the American Football League. He was the managing general partner of the team until forced out of this role by current managing partner Al Davis in 1972; Valley subsequently sold his stake in 1976.[3] Along with his wife, Gladys L. Valley, they left the majority of their net worth to the Wayne and Gladys Valley Foundation, based in Oakland, California.[4]
Valley died in 1986; his wife continued to operate the Foundation until her death in 1998. The foundation is a key donor to OSU, both academically and athletically; the Valley Library and Valley Football Center at OSU are both named in their honor.[

Union would oppose six-game ban for Vincent Jackson
Posted by Mike Florio on August 25, 2010 9:50 PM ET
On Monday, Rosenthal spelled out the league’s position regarding the placement of Chargers receiver Vincent Jackson on the roster exempt list. As the NFL interprets the relevant provisions of the labor deal, Jackson must report by September 4 to avoid the consecutive application of his three-game suspension for violating the substance-abuse policy and placement on the roster exempt list, which requires any restricted free agent who shows up after the final preseason game to wait three games — without pay — before being permitted to play.
In other words, Jackson will miss at a minimum six regular-season games, if he fails to report before the three-week window in which he is banished from the team.
Though the consecutive application of the suspension of Jackson and his placement on the roster exempt list has little relevance to Jackson’s status with the Chargers, the situation becomes more complicated if Jackson is traded after his suspension begins. The league, as Rosenthal explained it, believes that Jackson would miss six games. But the union disagrees.
NFL Players Association General Counsel Richard Berthelsen explained the union’s position to me by phone this afternoon. The NFLPA believes that the roster exempt list has a specific purpose — to prevent a team from being forced to remove another player from the 53-man roster if a restricted free agent reports and signs his tender offer without prior warning or notice. In such cases, the restricted free agent may be out of shape, or the team may want to get him up to speed regarding the playbook and other strategy before thrusting him into action.
For a team that trades for a player, that team presumably is willing to add the player to the roster at that moment, alleviating the need for protection against the possibility that a restricted free agent will show up out of the blue, forcing the team to pick one of the other 53 players on the spot and remove him from the team.
Thus, Berthelsen explained that the placement of the player on the roster exempt list should not follow him to a new team, if he is traded.
The relevant portion of the Collective Bargaining Agreement seems to support this conclusion. Article XXXII, Section 4(c) specifies the circumstances under which a player “may be placed on the roster exempt list of his Club.” (Emphasis added.) So if the player is placed on the roster exempt list “of his Club” and “his Club” later trades him to a “new Club,” the player logically isn’t on the roster exempt list “of his new Club.”
In the end, the matter likely would be resolved via binding arbitration. And any team trading for Jackson surely would want to resolve that issue before finalizing the deal.
As a practical matter, it’s another moving part that would further complicate what already would be a complicated negotiation.

Darren McFadden-RB-Raiders Aug. 25 – 9:10 pm et
Despite his return to practice Tuesday, Darren McFadden (hamstring) may not be cleared for Saturday’s preseason game against the 49ers.
McFadden’s return to practice was a step forward after over two weeks of missed practices, but he needs to impress the coaching staff in live action if he’s to have any chance of unseating Michael Bush. We do like McFadden as a late-round pick (especially in PPR), but he’s unlikely to start in Week 1.

So far Veldheer has already proven that he was a very good draft pick.
Yes there are questions about his height, but the one thing we know is that he won’t get consistently blown 3-5 yards off the line of scrimmage.
I prefer him at Right Tackle personally, but if he can play center effectively we have taken a big step toward shoring up our offensive line.
Like I and many others here have already said several times…
We shore up the o-line, we win the division.

If DMac can’t play then maybe there should be some serious talk about renegotiating his contract. His tenure as a Raider is nothing to write home about The only difference between he & Schilens is the draft round selected & the $ size of the contract. Aside from those two items they appear to be two athletes who appear to have great potential but are both very injury-prone. This should be a make-break year for both of them. If they don’t perform cut your losses and move on. It’s just like with JaLoser – addition by subtraction. The day of the check is in the mail has gotten old. Pay up or hit the road. We don’t have time for boat anchors of any type.

So goes the O-line, so goes this year’s results. We can’t ignore the RG problem. Walker has the bulk and would do an excellent job at guard. Move Walker inside and let’s let the workout warrior learn on the job. He can be helped out in pass blocking, if necessary, by the TE or the FB. He should be fine at run blocking. Actually, he should be outstanding.
We just need to get our O-line to be where it needs to be. Waiting until next year is NOT the right answer. BCampbell is going to learn a lot more by doing rather than watching. Carlisle is fine for now as a backup but he’s too long of tooth to be a stater – especially when we have new blood sitting on the bench.

Likewise, if they want to move the middle. the middle is going to move. Bush, Bennett, Cartwright will all benefit from that grouping. JCampbell will also have time to find his new receivers.
