Camp was a success, of course

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, August 26th, 2010 at 12:37 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Everyone involved proclaimed Camp 2010 a success.

Just as they did last year under Tom Cable and as they did under Lane Kiffin, Art Shell, Norv Turner . . . you get the idea.

Words will give way to deeds on Sept. 12 when the Raiders visit the Tennesee Titans, and until then, there are two more preseason games to help sort out the roster and fine tuning to be done when practice resumes without the prying eyes of the media in Alameda Monday.

A few notes as relayed from those actually on the scene while I finish my stint on the disabled list:

– Cable seemed most gratified that in his judgement, there were no backward steps during camp.

“We came with our plan, we got through everything, we installed everything that we wanted to. The mission was to try and get better every day, not have those days where you’re really disgusted or disappointed as a coaching staff, that, ‘Man, we really went backward today.’ We didn’t have any of those days.

“So, well done by this football team. Now the real issue is to continue that when we go home. Eliminate the distractions that come with living back at home and all those kinds of things, travel and such, and being able to handle that and eliminate those distractions.”

– Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha believes the Raiders will enter the season with more confidence than in years past.

“We’ve accomplished a lot, and being able to put out good practices and win games in the preseason, it goes a long way,” Asomugha said. ` Just getting the wins, even though it’s preseason, it’s just getting those wins builds your confidence and gets you used to it.”

– Asomugha believes Cable is a better coach and the Raiders are a better team for handing the offense over to Hue Jackson rather than making another change at the top.

“You know, it’s always a big impact when you don’t have a coaching change, because guys are used to the person who is calling the shots,” Asomugha said. “So I think it’s had a huge impact. We have had, like I was saying earlier, the coaching change with the coordinator, but like I said, he plays to the player’s strengths so there hasn’t been any head-butting there and Tom has been good with just giving that portion to Hue and letting him just take it.”

– More Asomugha . . . he’s gratified that he now has company in terms of players sticking around and getting more work after practice.

“You’ve noticed it, I’ve noticed it. Other guys have come up to me and have noticed it too. And every camp you guys have been here, that’s been the thing — work after practice, work after practice. And now, there’s like, you know you’re seeing like seven, eight guys, nine, ten guys doing it, and you’re like, ‘well this is new,’ and it’s great.

– Quarterback Jason Campbell on Jackson: He’s brought so much to this team, especially offensively. His mindset. His attitude. He pushes everybody each and every play. There’s not a day off, there’s not a play off. In order to be a champion in life, you’ve got to work like one. That’s what he preaches everyday, to work like a champion.”

– Campbell is giving the 49ers-Raiders preseason game the hard sell, apparently unaware it wasn’t popular enough locally to be on local television except on tape delay.

“This is probably the biggest preseason game I’ve aver been a part of, talking about the two teams in the Bay,” Campbell said. “San Francisco is a really good football team. They’re well-disciplined, they’re well-coached and they don’t beat themselves so it’s a great challenge for us heading into the regular season because you get to face an opponent in San Francisco that there’s a lot of different things offensively. Defensively, they move around a lot, they bring different blitzes, so it will be good for us to get a lot of stuff on tape, see what we need to continue to work on and what we need to do.”

– Wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey (sort of) compared 49ers-Raiders to the blood war that is the Terrapins vs. the Midshipmen.

“I mean, you always want to battle for it, you know, a team that’s in the same area as you,” Heyward-Bey said. “At Maryland, we never had a chance to do that because we’re the only team in Maryland. Matter of fact, we play Navy this year so I guess that will be something.”

  22. Nnamdi21 Says:

I think Jerry’s missing the point about the importance of the game relative to the blackout and Jason Campbell’s comments.

It’s important to Campbell, and to the team, because of a lot of things Hue Jackson pointed out in his interview. The fact that it isn’t sold out has no bearing at all on what the game means to the players.

Jackson: I don’t know to be honest with you. It’s been fun for me to be very honest with you. The organization for the first six months has said, ‘Hey, let’s go to work.’ I thank them for allowing me to just kind of focus in on what my environment was which was learning these players, understanding exactly what I have to work with, understanding our staff. I came here with a staff already in place. We have some fine, fine coaches on this staff. To take that and here we are today playing football games. We were in training camp and now football games are being played. I’m really excited about where we’re headed and exactly what we’re doping. Obviously I think we’re improving daily as we move toward opening the season.

    ========================================

The offensive lines have played fairly well this preseason. Much better than anticipated. But as you note, it is still the preseason.

  53. priesttj Says:

Art Shell threw a stick oof dynamite on his own team being extremely stubborn with his star player. The way he ran practice didn’t inspire many it made them second guess everything. He was a much better coach the first time around.

This Hue Jackson character has great motivation tactics similar to Gruden in some ways. Gruden woke you up with a cup full of ice water in the face. This guy pushes you to reach to inside and go after it all against all odds. That’s why he tells the defense what’s coming and you still have to execute. Well the proof is in the games and how we compete when the game is on the line…………..nothing else matters….can you win?

Didn’t mean to disparage Art Shell but he was reaching back to far in the past and the game is much faster now and played bigger faster athletes. Hue knows that he’s in the present but bring an old attitude about the game. This offense snaps off plays with quick precision if you’ve been paying attention. That first drive vs the Bears was a snap shot of Hues pace at which this team will play at.

They come after you with quick aggressive plays and the QB is not standing scratching himself waiting for someone to get open. THey quick read and get rid of the rock with dig routes deep outs and 9’s aint playing (pardon the pun) they are after your defense and if you can’t handle it they’ll put up points in a hurry.

That’s why the frustration on Campbell’s part with the full complement players not being available he wants to see what the offense is really capable of.

If a guy is not going to run between the tackles in this league, he is not going to be a running back in this league. Heck Bryant Westbrook, and Darren Sproales run between the tackles. The problem with McFadden is not that he can’t run inside, it’s that he puts the ball on the ground every fourth run inside.

Thanks for your comment on the pevious thread, regarding the OL, game day players.

My personal feelings is, the one player you had as suited up is Campbell. I disagree. I think he is a work in progress, and the Raiders may want to have a more experienced player for a game ready situation.

I watch all of SD games, sproles dose not get a lot of run between the tackles. He is not an every down back.

Westbrook on the other hand is Hard, but he is built for it. westbrook is listed at 5′10 203 has a low center of gravity, legs etc. not to mention he can play with pain, as he had an ankle, busted ribs, and was concussed, and yet manned up and played…

DMAC is a poor mans version of RBUSH. Reason why I say poor mans version is that DMAC has less swivel than RBUSH…

DMAC should be played to his streghts. he is a space eater, and should be used accordingly to creat mismatches for the opposing defense.

I think this was just to get this thing over with the media, they have been requesting him since his signing. I can’t see this happening continuely. 66. edward teach Says:

    Priest,

The team is not obligated to make Hue Jackson available in the preseason. They are, however, obligated to do so during the regular season and can be fined by the league for not doing so.

I believe Jerry covered that in an earlier post.

  67. priesttj Says:

Jerry Porter who was the 2nd best WR on the team. Randy Moss watched that crap as did the rest of the team and it was meaningless distraction for a team trying to find an identity. We needed Jerry and he wouldn’t play him.

  68. priesttj Says:

    Teach

I know that’s why I said they were just getting the obligation out of the way. That’s the leat thing they need to be concerned about when they get back to Alameda.

  69. Raider Dell Says:

My gut feeling, most of us have themc and instead of listening to them we discount them for bias or emotions.

So let me give you mine. My sense is Cable was reviewed by AL, and the decision was in order to remain as HC, he was to give up all dutys or all interest in the offense.

Davis, considered the player respectibility of Cable, continuity and his personal conduct, was to his liking for the organization. (yes the Hansen incident was troublesome)

I’m sure Davis looked at the 12 games Cable called plays in the 2008 season, and the offense in 2009, 16 games, and produced not the offense he is looking for.

Cable, had to be smart and know how far he could push to survive.

Hue Jackson, does sound like a man who has been given the keys to the offense. His comments today, almost seem to indicate, he is in control. I first noticed this during the last two pre-season games, when JC would come off the field, He was always met by Jackson and Cable was not in any discussion.

I believe game management, crucial calls and other hot game decision questions, will fall to Cable during the game, as the HC.

I could be completely wrong. I wasn’t there, but I can read between the lines pretty good. So I’ve been told.

  70. Dakota Says:

    Hello?

  71. Dakota Says:

  72. priesttj Says:

I’m amused that when ever a coach n this team speaks of Mr Davis in those terms that you guy’s who have never met the man and know nothing about him get disturbed. It’s his opinion and it’s shared by many in the coaching fraternity. You however are a fan far removed from that fraternity so you obviously wouldn’t know would you?

As long as you aren’t required to share that opinion why worry about it.

I see W and L’s as a part of life in a very tough environment of which most fans have no clue. THis man is the NFL at this point that’s why people hold him in such high regard because they are in that profession and they know what it takes to do what he did.

The media prints all these fairy tales and you guy’s eat them up oblivious to facts and truth. And when someone speaks the truth you hate it because of a present record that stops your bragging rights. That’s all you care about. Well these men know much more. Don’t hate them because they know it and you’re ignorant of it.

well said, Priest. A good Raiders team is good for the NFL.

  103. edward teach Says:

It cracks me up when people suggest that compliments directed toward Al Davis by current and former players and coaches are somehow scripted and/or required.

The NFL is the pinnacle of the football world. To suggest that these men that have climbed the ladder to the top of their profession by being the best there is at their jobs would read from a script just so they could work for a certain person when they have so many other options, is just ludicrous.

Al Davis (like the rest of us) has his faults. He is, however, a great man that has contributed more than most to the sport that has been his life. People that care about the sport and have an affinity for its history and develpoment know this, and appreciate him for it. Maybe they all say the same thing because it’s true.

  104. Dakota Says:

If William Joseph, that man who the Raiders cut and sign over and over again as filler, is selected over Henderson…Henderson should immediately hang up his cleats.

Fox had a fight with Big Al so I know he said it but the rest show me. There are coaches on this present staff that worked here before and came back…..explain that. Tons of coaches who played here and want the job…………explain that.

My thing is if you don’t know yourself, how can you have such a strong opinion on something you know very litttle about. That is exactly what’s wrong with this world. Unless you have overwhelming evidence to support your opinion why state something as fact.

I know he runs the draft because everyone I’ve ever talked to for 30 years has said so. He has strong control on player personnel and has his own phylosophies about offense and defense. But I’ve never heard a coach say he wouldn’t let me coach…….NEVER!!

You can’t say Davis is a tyrant who runs every aspect of the Raiders just to blame him when things go wrong and then claim he has nothing to do with things that are right.

The whole Warren Sappian “Everything is a nite mare in Raider land” may have been more true when that fool was here and frankly, I blame his big fat mouth for alot of it.

If talked then the way he talks now about them you can see how it would sink the locker room.

  120. 860Todd Christensen Says:

I’d rather see Brennan get the 3rd spot, but I just got done reading Jerry’s chat from the other day and he was talking about Gradkowski possibly getting cut and Boller moving up to the 2 spot. WTF?

Yeah, let’s cut a guy who played great when he came off the bench last year in several games — winning AFC Player of the Week honors vs. Pittsburgh — for a guy who couldn’t cut it with the Rams and has looked erratic at best this preseason. To be honest, I’m not convinced Campbell is a better option than Gradkowski. Forget Boller. I have a feeling KB makes it because he’s a former No. 1 pick with good size and speed, but I’ve got zero confidence in him and with the makeup of this offensive line our backup QB is probably going to see some extensive action.

  136. Chris in NY Says:

I also think Thomas Howard should stay. Not totally sold on the idea that Wimbley and Scott can consistently cover athletic TEs and RBs. We need to keep TH around.

I’d also love to see Bruce Campbell get some work with the 1s. I have no faith in Cable’s judgment when it comes to evaluating who starts/sits. He’s often wrong including with, and perhaps particularly with, the offensive line.

  137. 860Todd Christensen Says:

  140. Chris in NY Says:

And not signing Mawae makes no sense at all. They say he made the Pro Bowl last year on reputation. Maybe. Maybe not. But even if he slipped some, is he really a worse option at the center position than a rookie D-II tackle who hasn’t looked especially ready thus far?

  141. priesttj Says:

I might not want to face it but I don’t play NT in the NFL, Franklin is a true NT not a 4/3 so-called NT he plays the zero techigue with great skill. So you might want address that question to him.

    Todd

Campbell is one hell of a QB and we are extremely lucky to get him at this particular time. It’s just not this year but the next 6-7 years as he matures and becomes one of the better QB’s in the game. It changes everything from gloom and doom to a very bright future as Hue Jackson delineated. This is a QB driven team now.

  149. 860Todd Christensen Says:

Priest, I’m in, we haven’t looked this good in years, and I did back JR, everything went wrong, grow from it, learn from it, put it on the field……

  150. priesttj Says:

Truth be told I don’t think Russell would’ve ever gotten to the point that Campbell is as far as accuracy on a consistent basis. And just from a technigue standpoint it would’ve taken him 2-3 years of hard work and film study to get to where Campbell is right now. Russell there is no realchance that he ever puts that type of work in.

Campbell is a real boost to this organization it’s hard for me to really believe that the Redskins actually let this guy walk. I said it before I think he’s better than Gannon was when we got him.

If DMC and the WR’s come to play and the line holds up you’ll see what I mean. Gannon had a great Oline gave him all sorts of time to throw. If Campbell had that he would light it up.

  165. edward teach Says:

    Kell,

When someone puts together a TV promo for the Raiders, it would be naive to think that the organization didn’t have a very large say in the message and the content. They are paying for it, after all.

When people like Gil Brandt, Paul Tagliabue, John Madden, Tom Flores, Bill Walsh, Bo Jackson and so many others say good things about Al Davis, it’s not because they’re getting paid to say it, or because they’re forced to. When coaches come back to work for Davis after having left for other opportunities, it’s not because they have to. Some of it by current employees is part of the job, but that kind of thing is common everywhere in the NFL. Watch other team’s press conferences and interviews with new and current players nd you’ll see what I mean. The fact that so many FORMER players and coaches, and others that have never been a part of the organization say these things is probably more compelling than anything.

If you can’t see the difference there then it’s probably because you don’t want to.

This environment is going to be the Raiders environment and whatever we do obviously we have a wealth of good players here: Darren McFadden, Michael Bush, Louis Murphy, Darrius Heyward-Bey, Zach Miller. We have some prime time football players and we’re tailoring our style of offense around those players to give them the best opportunity to have success.

Assuming that came into play, for the 2010 season, Satele would be relegated to back-up center & Morris would be finding employment in another industry or possibly the UFL.

good hopefully they would keep alex parsons over morris

These guy’s are way too caught up in the media created persona of Al Davis. Warren Sapp and Randy Moss comment something’s fishy…..lol just what kind of thinkng person would listen to Randy Moss unless they were looking for something negative.

Rod Woodson someone anyone can trust, not a word. Jerry Rice nothing negative. And just wya too many to number but the haters would rather seekout the few who had bad experiences and draw all their conclusions from them. People believe what they chose to believe……………..period. facts be damned!!

You mean the Al Davis created media persona, no?

  179. J Wiggle Says:

I said it before I think he’s better than Gannon was when we got him.

    ——————————————————

    Of course he is!

Now let’s see what Hue can do with him. Missing a couple of HOF WRs though.

I think all a person has to do is look at the folks that talk badly about Al, and then look at the people that speak well of him.

We all know the names on each side of the argument. I’ll stand on that.

Remember Him with John Brockington in Green Bay?

    Loved it.

    30 yr,

Who would those 2 play in front of, Watkins?

DHB, Murphy, JLH, and Ford are LOCK for the 1-4 WR spot. Chaz is SURELY mixed in there somewhere for the 7 games or so he’ll be in the year.

No room for more WRs mayne.

  186. J Wiggle Says:

Oh, and welcome back 30 YR.

That was you posting about the wife earlier, right?

I hope we can see a noticable improvement, with hopes of better things to come in year 3.

I look back on this last game from Campbell and see why I am so scared of him.

Some good flashes, nice passes and movement in the pocket….and a 50 something QB rating, 2 turnovers and a fumble, and losing at the end.

Campbell worries me more than just about anyone else on the roster. I have more confidence in Rolando McClain and Jered Veldheer than I do JC.

  190. J Wiggle Says:

Now of course when I watch the game for the 5th and 6th times, I’ll be looking at a lot more, lol.

Monday night Football. Brockington, who. looking back, was Chuck Muncie like, powerfull and explosive. Mixed in with Mac Lane, who would run it, but also take a swing pass out of the backfield.

I’d just started playing youth football as a running back, so as a kid, I focused on what those fellas were up too.

  193. J Wiggle Says:

    JFB,

    You’re trippin!

Campbell was probably the most impressive thing from the Chicago game. The sacks he DIDN’T take is what stood out to me. Dude was decisive, and quick with the ball. Also did a really good job of stepping up in the pocket.

The INT was the result of a blown blocking assignment by either Gallery or Satele. Pressure came right in his face and I believe his arm was hit. The read was correct and it should have been 6.

The “fumble” ??? You mean the bad snap? Are you really putting that on JC?

    Tough crowd!

where would you put mario manningham ranking him with our top 4 wr’s????

  195. J Wiggle Says:

    JFB,

Will we keep Grads and his salary as a #3 QB?

He better step his game up Saturday, lol!

  196. J Wiggle Says:

    30 Yr,

The question is where Jackson and Davis would put him?

I think it’s pretty apparent that DHB, Murphy, and Ford are going to get every chance to fail before they are demoted. Same with Chaz and JLH. I think any WR short of Reggie Wayne types don’t see the field for us.

  197. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    Just Fire Baby,

You and Chris in NY are out of your collective minds! Jason Campbell is not anywhere close to the issue. Campbell is a strength. Making the right reads, moving the offense, staying after EVERY practice, leadership….as Jwiggle said, that INT was because he was hit as he threw…that’s a TD if the O-Line does its job.

Gradkowski is what he is. He had a couple of good games last year, got hurt and then got hurt again. He is not a starting NFL QB….and is hanging on as a backup…just like last year.

Gradkowski appears to be a great guy. But to think he’s an NFL starte? C’mon Man!

  198. raidersxy Says:

gotta agree with wigg, 1000%!! i mean the guy threw for over 3500yds 20 tds to only 15ints on a very bad redskin team.. those type of numbers for us directly leads us to at least 4 more wins…

Plaxicco Burress might be a name to keep an eye on. Gives the staff time to see if they really have anything with these young WRs now that there is a decent QB getting the rock to them.

100% correct JW. Those two misfires were directly attributable to our dynamic duo of Satele & Morris. Are you noticing a theme or pattern here?

  205. Just Fire Baby Says:

    J,

Has nothing to do about Grads bro. Has everything about having a QB who is a winner.

That INT was a momentum-swinger. Blame it on whoever, he threw the pass and it was an awful one.

The fumble, he was looking right at the center and it hit the palm of his hand. Than he preceded to run away from the fumble (I will give him a pass since it was preseason…for now).

End of the day we were losing, and he had a QB rating of 50. Not going to get it done, against a lower-tier defense.

  206. raidersxy Says:

I like Cambell so far after just 2 preseason games.

The INT in the bears was would have been six with 0.1 seconds more to throw. He saw Mille breaking in to the post but tried to get it out and it was a duck.

Fumble yea that was dumb. I actually think that for Satale to have just gotten injured cooaches should not have went to shotgun with a Center just entering thr game like that. Bad snap on Morris bat formation on coaches.

  207. 30 year raider Says:

JLH AND MURPH are alot of heart.. i like that…darrius heward dropus??? i dont know yet and ford will see..i still think we need to make a move for a proven WR..

  208. Just Fire Baby Says:

What did Hue Jackson say the most important thing was for a QB?

Ability to lead men. Not completion %’s, and looking nice stepping up in the pocket.

Campbell has been losing everytime he has left the game in a Raider uniform.

    Not impressed!!!
