What we learned from training camp

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, August 26th, 2010 at 7:15 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Things we learned from Camp 2010 at the Napa Marriott:

– The Raiders go into the season with zero doubt as to their starting quarterback. Jason Campbell is it, as proclaimed by Tom Cable the day camp opened.

Of course, JaMarcus Russell was the anointed starter last year, but every day was a referendum on his performance and work ethic.

– The offense belongs to Hue Jackson. He was finally allowed to talk to the media Thursday, but what he did on the field spoke far more than what he said in a 13-plus minute interview.

Jackson brought more electricity and made practice more interesting than any Raider coach since Jon Gruden.

– Distractions, by Raiders standards, are at the lowest rate in memory.

No fisticuffs between assistants or allegations of domestic assault. No disgruntled players, unless you count a concussed Luke Lawton, wondering why he didn’t get more snaps following a head injury. Exclusive franchise player Richard Seymour was the first man off the bus and even if that was a staged bit of symbolism, very little that went on in Napa suggested this was a team on the verge of imploding.

– Either the “competition” suggested by the coaches was a sham, or this group was extraordinary at determining its best players.

The depth chart looks the same now as it did in OTAs and minicamps, with injuries being the only wild card.

– Rolando McClain and Lamarr Houston had better be good right away.

They were starters from the moment they arrived, and both looked to be upgrades, although you never really know until real games begin.

– Camp Cable was not much different than Camp Kiffin, Camp Shell, Camp Callahan, Camp Gruden or any other camp in terms of violence at the line of scrimmage.

There was a live session of a dozen or so plays, and a goal line sequence, but as long as Al Davis owns the Raiders don’t expect the head coach to risk losing talent before a regular season game is played.

– Chaz Schilens simply cannot be relied upon as a big part of the offense based on his propensity for injury. Two foot surgeries, now an arthroscopic knee procedure. The Raiders are holding out hope he’ll be ready for Week 1, but that’s not the way to bet.

– Louis Murphy is far and away the Raiders’ best and most dangerous receiver _ and he still drops too many passes for a real level of comfort.

– Hope Zach Miller is in the best shape of his life. He’ll take more blows than Manny Pacquiao’s next opponent. It took Campbell about five seconds to discover Miller is his best option.

– Nnamdi Asomugha is the new Tim Brown in terms of speaking his mind and not concerning himself with what the owner thinks. He’s all Raider, and likes what he sees, but Asomugha makes so much money and has such status he can also say what he thinks and not worry about the ramifications.

– McClain is his own man. He goes his own way and seems to have a serene confidence about himself, while not having much interest in talking to reporters (no problem) or even signing autographs for fans who cheer his name (not a problem either, but not cool).

– Cable may have distanced himself from the direction of the offense, but he can’t help himself when he sees issues on the offensive line. When he does, Jim Michalczik steps aside.

– Tommy Kelly jumps offsides too often and it remains to be seen if he’s a nose tackle, but darned if he didn’t come into camp in the best shape of his life with what seems to be a sincere belief that he’s got to do better.

– Michael Bush remains the best option for steady yardage in the running game.

– Best looking crop of draft picks I can remember. McClain and Houston are instant starters. Judging offensive linemen is difficult in camp, but Veldheer at least earned a start at center and Bruce Campbell’s body and speed alone are worth a fourth-round pick. Jacoby Ford showed better receiving skills than advertised although slowed by a quad injury. Middle linebacker Travis Goethel looks like a keeper. Seventh-round picks Jeremy Ware and Stevie Brown both have legitimate shots to not only make the team, but play before the season is over.

– Shane Lechler and Sebastian Janikowski really don’t need to attend at all. OK, maybe a week, at most.

  3. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    Just Fire Baby,

You and Chris in NY are out of your collective minds! Jason Campbell is not anywhere close to the issue. Campbell is a strength. Making the right reads, moving the offense, staying after EVERY practice, leadership….as Jwiggle said, that INT was because he was hit as he threw…that’s a TD if the O-Line does its job.

Gradkowski is what he is. He had a couple of good games last year, got hurt and then got hurt again. He is not a starting NFL QB….and is hanging on as a backup…just like last year.

Gradkowski appears to be a great guy. But to think he’s an NFL starte? C’mon Man!

  4. Just Fire Baby Says:

    SnB,

I’m taking about Bruce, I am talking about how good Campbell is.

Can we stick to the point please?

  5. Just Fire Baby Says:

    **********************************

It was first and ten, in the red zone, with a 10-0 lead.

Take the sack, don’t just throw up a duck.

JC has had a reputation for the back-breaking turnovers, and the meaningless stat-packing TD’s and yards.

I have nothing to change this so far, but granted it is earlier.

I am rooting for him, with all the gusto I got. I really didn’t think he looked that good against the Bears and his stats coincide with that belief. He had a very Jamarcus-esque half, with a QB rating of 50, 2 turnovers and a streak of 6 straight incompletions.

  6. RaiderLen Says:

This should be a great year for us Raider fans as it applies to the QB position.

We have a bonafide NFL calibre starter.

His History suggests that he can stay on the field for a full season in spite of mediocre talent on the O line.

I’d like to see just what is possible with a competent QB that can play a full season schedual.

No more shuffling of the deck at the most important position on the team.

  7. TerrapinRaider Says:

Make no mistake, I was not excited about JC when we got him. I thought he was garbage. But I’m willing to give him his shot. So far so good.

You may think Murphy is the ‘most dangerous’ ..I just think you are wrong. Both DHB and Chaz (when healthy) are dangerous. If Murphy was so dangerous and DHB was not then why the hell would coverage continually role to his side?

No arguement about MBush; but no doubt DMC is electric.

  8. Just Fire Baby Says:

Redskins record with Campbell, when he didn’t play:

    17-12

    Record when he did play:

    20-32

You can have the completion %’s and few nice passes he always throws a game.

    I want wins.

  9. TerrapinRaider Says:

Just Fire ..I do hear what you are sayin but you have to look at the progression from game #1 to #2 …you can tell he got infinitely more comfortable.

If continues to improve, all the better.

JFB, what’s Grads numbers look like?

  11. Just Fire Baby Says:

IMO, he has been pretty disappointing, but maybe I am not seeing what other are.

2 preseason games, 17-33 (barely 50%) 219 yards, 1 rushing TD, 2 turnovers, 14 points in almost one full game.

If he continues to play like this, we will be royally screwed.

  12. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    JFB,

Miller was free on the inside on that play. JC was looking down field and made the right read and pulled the trigger. That INT was not because of a bad read, forcing the ball etc….it was made because the O-Line allowed the opponent to quickly shoot the gap…

I want my QB making that throw 100x out of 100

That play opens up like that during the season, we will way more of those than lose.

You are all upset over that INT and the snap problem with a backup center? Be sure to give him back the laser he threw to Murphy on 3rd down that he dropped.

I am not feeling what you are saying or seeing. But to each their own.

  13. TerrapinRaider Says:

ZM is the man. The best TE in that draft. Still out ’stat’ Olsen every year since draft.

  14. TerrapinRaider Says:

I do think Miller is overused sometimes. Its like the QBs are sucking on a nipple and can’t wean themselves off.

  15. RaiderLen Says:

If he continues to play like this, we will be royally screwed.
    ————————————————–
Nobody can screw a team like JaMarcus.

Campbell makes us better by default.

  16. Just Fire Baby Says:

    Not one for excuses.

He threw a crappy pass, at a terrible time.

He isn’t going to get supreme blocking all the time, we all know that. He better figure out a better alternative than saying, “Well crap if I had the time it would have been…”

    Don’t like would have been’s.

  17. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    Terrapin,

DHB has to make catches in the game. THat’s it. Murphy has made catches…he has a bunch of drops…but he has a bunch of catches and a couple of big games to throw in as well.

The DHB story is about staying healthy and make a few plays in a game to give us confidence that he is truly getting better

  18. TerrapinRaider Says:

Listen ..you dont get doubled if you are not dangerous. Thats all I’m saying

  19. TerrapinRaider Says:

Jerry would’ve been better off saying “most productive” …’dangerous’ is a matter of opinion

    ———————————————
Yep. But…The guy has to show He can get it done.

    That means production.

  21. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    Terrapin,

Be careful with the rhetoric the Raiders were talking last year about decoys and all that.

Last year was a bad year for all involved. He’s going to get plenty of chances to shine.

If they didn’t think he could do it, I don’t think they would talk him up

He’s just got to make some plays.

  22. TerrapinRaider Says:

If DHB goes the entire 3qs vs sf without a single catch then something is seriously wrong and he should not start.

  23. TerrapinRaider Says:

I’m patient n I can hope but enough is enough

..queue JR, Satele, Chaz, Ron Curry, Madonna Porter, et al

either ran out or running out of patience/time

  24. RaiderLen Says:

I can think of a few reasons why I’d like to see DHB “breakout”

He validates to Himself and the Raiders he was worth the 7th pick.

He makes the Raiders a better Team, with the potential to win more games because of his presence.

It will shut the national naysayers up.

  25. priesttj Says:

    T’pinRaider

They aint seen nothing yet just wait until this guy gets confident in the guy’s he’s playing with and the timing gets better. One thing he’s never had is continuity from one season to the next over the next few seasons if we keep Hue this guy is going to be really good.

DHB and McFadden will have a huge impact on the passing game. Based on what Hue says this could be a very good campaign this year.

  26. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    Terrapin,

Getting DHB into the game is more up to Hue Jackson. They have to design plays and get him involved early.

bubble screens, quick slants etc….short throws..not just intermediate and deep stuff.

They gotta use DHB as a full receiver…not just the speed guy.

    This weekend will be interesting

  27. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

Could you imagine if this team was going into the season with just an injured Gradkowski and Boller…..

    Whew.

Finally have a legit play caller in Campbell. Just got to be patient with the young receivers.

  28. RaiderFanFromJersey Says:

    What’s up Nation?
I wish Chaz “dont squeeze the” Chillens wasn’t so fragile but wishes don’t get you anywhere in this league. Our young guys have to step up & I think HueJax will get the best out of what we have. And w/ DHB, the sky is the limit. His speed, size & work ethic could lead to greatness. His hands just have to catch up, pun intended. Reportedly they have, we’ll see.
That said, I really don’t think bringing in proven producers (also proven headaches) like V. Jackson or Plaxico are good for this team. These guys are character guys that are willing to take direction & do what it takes to win. Let’s give em All we got & if that isnt enough for the div crown/playoffs, then add to the good core we’ve built, not make despiration signings that blow up in our faces – D Hall, J Walker, G Wilson…

That’s ridiculous! JC was hit as he was throwing the ball. His eyes were downfield and his guy was open. He pulled the trigger. If that happens, I can live with that.

The bad read, not on the same page stuff is what would concern me. Haven’t seen much of that.

  33. TerrapinRaider Says:

Continuity Baby. Let’s see if we can keep Campbell on the field for at least 16 games and see where it leads.

  35. Just Fire Baby Says:

Jamarcus Russell’s preseason rating the first two games of last preseason:

    80.8 and 114.2

    Jason Campbell’s:

    McFadden 500 yards rushing 4TDs, 500 yards receiving 3TDs

Matt Leinart has completed 90% of his passes and he just got benched!

Hey Murphy is just going to build on his 500+ yards last season and Miller is more than capable of 950 yards he had close to 800 last season I beleive.

I say DHB may or may not produce but either way give some of those yards to JLH and Schilens if healthy and there you go

  47. J Wiggle Says:

    just fire,
some nfl qbs who dont fare well with their first teams find stability in teams and offenses that suits them. Just look at Kurt Warner, and Rich Gannon, journeyman qbs who found stability in both the rams and raiders respectively. things are looking up so dont be pessimistic, we got a qb thats a huge upgrade over russell and is a competent qb. thats all we need.

  49. Just Fire Baby Says:

If Campbell had been here to be kicked around for awhile, nobody would be excited about his run so far (again granted it is early; a good start this weekend would do wonders). But since he is in his honeymoon, all is well.

The facts remain that his career won-loss record and stats makes him the worst starting QB in our division.

I don’t want our QB to hold back this potentially great defense, kicking game, and above-average running game.

If he goes for 20 TD’s and 18 turnovers like last year, we won’t win squat.

Sorry to play the role of Kool-Kell tonight, but it has to be said. He needs to improve, and he has two weeks to do so, because Tennesse in a home-opener is going to be WAAAAYYYYY harder than playing the Bears in a preseason game.

  50. J Wiggle Says:

    15.7 points a game.

    ——————————————————

Haven’t heard of the 1.7pt play mayne.

Bottom line is the offense looked WAY better in game 2 than game 1. Saw a lot of progress. Game 2, the offense had THREE scoring drives. Why you are trying to roll game 1 up into this game is beyond me.

Im all for it sxy, I’m just not going that far out on the limb. I’m on it just not that far out there.
Our defense is what really excites me. We’ve been decent on D in recent years, but got no help/rest from the offense & this year we’ve taken huge jumps on the first two levels & maintained, at the very least, on our strength, the DB’s. W/ a C+ offense, we’re in the mix come December & that’s all I’ve wanted from my Raiders for years now! Let’s get it boys!!!!!

  55. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    Just Fire,

JC is learning the offense with a young and inexperienced receiving corps and a shoddy O-Line. They ain’t coming out here looking like the Colts in their first games. No way.

This team gets better as the year goes by…but if you are looking for the “Greatest Show on Turf” out of the gate…you are going to be disappointed.

Also, your boy “Grads” ain’t getting the job. And he is a lesser option than Campbell is. If that wasn’t the case, he’d be neck and neck with Campbell. Instead he’s neck and neck with Boller for backup and possibly for a roster spot. ~ One great Quarter and a decent game doesn’t guarantee anything unless JaDavis is your competition ;)

Jason Campbell gives this team the best chance to be successfull.

  56. KoolKell Says:

I know tis only preseason but the point is that if Crumpler was wearing silver and black everyone knows the catch wouldnt be overturned if it was the EXACT same situation. I hate the Cheat-triots.

I beg to differ. We’re talking about a professional QB vs Purple Drank. Puhleezzz. We aint no Indy or Saints but the offense is going to be vastly improved just by not enduring 10 games under Purple Drank.

Observation; Jason Campbell is certainly an upgrade for us a QB. However, until gets adequate protection from his offensive line and his receivers are able to get open and catch the ball on a consistent basis he is going to be less effective than perhaps we’d like him to be.

Gruden has never said anything remotely like that and neither has Callahan…………show us the quotes..

Fox had a fight with Big Al so I know he said it but the rest show me. There are coaches on this present staff that worked here before and came back…..explain that. Tons of coaches who played here and want the job…………explain that.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++

Sean Payton said so in his book.

Parcells asked Payton what advice he’d received. Payton said Gruden, Fox and Callahan all advised him against taking the job.

“Bill said, ‘Put my name behind those three. You’re gonna get your chance. This isn’t the right one, kid,’” Payton wrote.

49ers set to unveil weapons Saturday
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on August 27, 2010 10:32 AM ET
The 49ers bandwagon has filled up rather quickly, mostly on the basis of a strong defense in 2009 and some big names on offense that don’t play quarterback.

On Saturday, Mike Singletary will see two of those young stars play for the first time this preseason. Michael Crabtree should play roughly a quarter after missing the first two games of the preseason with a neck strain. Frank Gore will get playing time after missing the first two preseason games because he’s Frank Gore.

The team will also see what Brian Westbrook has to offer. It will be the former Philly star’s first work since concussion knocked him out early in the 2009 season.

The only key missing for San Francisco on Saturday will be Vernon Davis, who doesn’t appear likely to play again the preseason because of a knee injury

Campbell is Kerry Collins part II in my opinion. Hes not a bad player, he’ll put up decent enough numbers to keep his job, he will have the occasional big passing day. But he’s not the type of QB who can lead this team out of its 7 year slump. For excited as people are about Campbell, he was 4-12 as a starter last year, 20-32 for his career. The biggest criticism about Campbell in Washington is that he was indecisive and hung onto the ball too long. Campbells bad habits coupled with our inexperienced, and frankly subpar, receiving corps will not bode well for this team. Campbell will be an upgrade over Russell, and he will certainly put up better numbers than JaFootlong, but dont expect him to lead this team to the playoffs. Campbell puts up respectable stats and completes a high percentage of his passes by checking down to his backs and tight ends all the time. He wont lose games for you, but he wont win them for you either.

  159. ohioraider Says:

What we really learned from training camp:

    4. Kool-aid drinkers on this blog still delusional and incapable of insightful critical analysis.
