Raiders-49ers postgame wrap

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, August 28th, 2010 at 10:53 pm in Oakland Raiders.

News, notes, quotes and observations following the Raiders’ 28-24 loss to the 49ers Saturday night at the Coliseum:

– Here is how coach Tom Cable responded when asked if he expected Jason Campbell to be available for the season opener after being sidelined by a stinger following a sack by Travis LaBoy.

“Yeah, I do. At this point it does not seem to be a serious issue.”

A “stinger,” or “burner” is described as a “`nerve injury resulting from trauma to the neck and shoulder. Its primary symptom is burning pain radiating down one upper extremity.”

It can be a brief injury or something that can take weeks to heal.

Campbell admitted that as he was lying on the field he was a lot more concerned than when he addressed reporters following he game.

“It felt a lot worse at the time that it happened, but thank God … they don’t think it’s going to be really, really serious,” Campbell said. “But at the same time it’s something we’ve got to take care of before the season starts.”

In Campbell’s case, it’s a concern because stingers tend to be a recurring injury and it’s not the first time he’s had one.

“Yeah, I had one before. It felt a little bit more than a stinger at the time,’’ Campbell said. “Just trying to take (precautions). Trying to get up. At the same time, I couldn’t really feel a lot because it was down the back of my neck a little bit. We went to get it X-rayed to see what’s going on.

“Usually I recover pretty fast. Right now there’s no timetable. The thing is just to improve and continue to keep getting better. We don’t know the timetable or anything, but at the same time, I haven’t really missed any time before.” At the time of his injury, Campbell was 6 of 8 for 93 yards with a quarterback rating of 113.0, including a gorgeous game-opening eight-play, 81-yard drive.

“I thought I was doing great,’’ Campbell said. “I felt we were doing what we needed to do. Took the first drive down there and scored. Penalties hurt us after that.’’

–Bush fractured his left thumb on his seventh and final carry. He gained 23 yards and scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run.

“A safety came down, instead of getting my legs he got my hand and the ball,’’ Bush said. “That’s part of the game.’’

Bush said he wouldn’t know his status until he talked the medical staff Sunday, but it wasn’t an encouraging sight to see Michael Bennett tying his shoes in the locker room. He said he’s never played with a broken bone his hand before but noted optimistically, “It’s just the hand, hopefully I’ll be back, I mean, a hand to a leg is totally different. I broke my leg and I bounced back from that and I’ll do the same with my hand.’’

– -If Kyle Boller had drawn even in the race to be Campbell’s backup, Bruce Gradkowski hit the third-quarter turn on a dead sprint to pull back ahead.

Gradkowski completed 14 of 22 passes for 202 yards, touchdowns passes of74 yards to Louis Murphy and 27 yards to Zach Miller, no interceptions, and a 123.7 quarterback rating.

The first touchdown came in the final two minutes of the first half to put the Raiders within 17-14, and then he opened the second half with a 72-yard, nine-play drive which culminated in the throw to Miller.

If that wasn’t enough, Gradkowski had a deep heave drop through the hands of Todd Watkins inside the 5-yard line on fourth-and-9 from the 40-yard line and 1:14 to play. Watkins attempted to take the pass in over his shoulder and couldn’t reel it in.

“I haven’t been out there so it was good to get the feel of the first team,’’ Gradkowski said. “It was good to play almost three quarters. It was really good to get back out there and get a feel.’’

For any of you who think Gradkowski is making a run at Campbell for the starting role, here was how Cable assessed his performance:

“Bruce Gradkowski was one of the bright spots in terms of going in there and having some efficiency and move the club around fairly well,’’ Cable said. “I think that’s what you want from your backup quarterback and he showed himself very well that way.’’

Backup quarterback.

– The 49ers rushed for 165 yards on 33 carries, with the first team defense getting gashed for big plays (Frank Gore’s 49-yard run) and the reserves getting hit for a lot of little ones.

“I didn’t think we tackled particularly well tonight,’’ Cable said. “We had plenty of guys where we needed them. I just did not think early we tackled very well at all.’’

– Here’s the positive spin:

“Would love to win the football game without any question but more than anything we learned a lot about ourselves tonight,’’ Cable said. “We have a chance to have a very good football team but we have to do it our way.

“We have to do it all out all the time and I think there’s too many ups and downs in this football game for us to be who we need to be to succeed. A lot to learn from it, and that’s a good thing. I’m glad it happened now as opposed to a few weeks from now.’’

It’s worth noting Richard Seymour was rested because of his triceps injury.

– The early review on rookie center Jared Veldheer, starting in place of Samson Satele:

“I think you have to look at the film for that. I can remember one, there was a run through by a linebacker, (Patrick) Willis, one time that was on him but overall I think he directed the protections well,’’ Cable said. “He really didn’t show up as the game went on so that’s a good sign. But we’ll have to look at the film.

Cable, of course, wanted to see more film.

– Raiders quarterbacks were 20 of 30 for 295 yards and that included four or five dropped passes of varying degrees of difficulty.

– No return specialists stepped forward to do anything of note. The longest punt return was 11 yards by Johnnie Lee Higgins on a kick that he fielded at the 4-yard line rather than let bounce in the end zone.

Phillip Adams wasn’t even listed on the flip card as a specialist for the 49ers, but had an 83-yard punt return for a touchdown in which he wasn’t touched.

Ken Jurovich of the 49ers had a 48-yard kickoff return one play after Sebastian Janikowski’s touchback was nullified because Higgins was offsides.

– Linebacker Rolando McClain led the Raiders with eight tackles and made a few plays but was victimized on a few others.

–The Raiders played it fairly straight defensively, which everyone expected they would, given their regular-season game against the 49ers in October.

– Attendance was announced at 42,248, which of course represents tickets sold and in no way reflected the actual amount of fans in the park.

– Thanks to everyone who participated in tonight’s live chat.

    6-10 my friends…..

  5. VanHeathen Says:

Johnie Lee might have played himself right off the team…too many mistakes for a 3rd yr player, off sides, punt fielded inside the 10 (remeber last years fumble inside the 10), sad, cause he seems like a nice kid, but TOO many mistakes…
we need to find a return man, NOW!

  6. TerrapinRaider Says:

Thats excatly what I saw. They played so damn vanilla on offense and defense. Not that I blame them mind you but it was obvious.

  7. TheyCallMeAssassin Says:

You know, it’s probably good for them that they got outplayed this time around. They did well to capitalize on the Bears’ weaknesses. But they needed to see what it’s like to go up against a solid offensive line, an aggressive defense led by a monster like Patrick Willis, and an offense with a few established big-time playmakers.

Hopefully they know what they did wrong and can come back stronger. The defense in particular had played pretty well before tonight, and had their moments against the 49ers. But for the most part its a young group of players (especially without Richard Seymour around) who are still learning their roles. So maybe getting lit up on some long runs in the pre-season is not always such a bad thing, as long as the players learn from it and adjustments are made.

That said, in spite of Mario Henderson’s blown play I think this was the offensive line’s best outing as a group.

On the bright side, I do think we found a FB. Reece seems to be embracing that role pretty good. Which means I have to retract my previous statement of us finding another FB. I think he will be fine and once Lawton comes back, we have our 2 FBs.

    ————–

Yes, but I also thought the offensive line was truly terrible in the first two games so that’s not saying much.

I agree with you on Pears. I’d love to see them make a trade for another tackle. Matt Light, Jared Gaither, Marcus McNeil? Unfortunately, Cable seems to like his guys…

I still call 8-8. This defense will get better as the season goes along.

Al must address the O-line next year.

The Raiders will struggle again offensively because of the O-line.

I’d rather see Tonga make the roster than Lawton. Tonga is mostly a blocker, but can catch a little. Lawton can’t block…

Marcel Reece is a pretty exciting player, though. Always nice to see a FB get involved.

That is an automatic drive stopper and gives the other team field position. WAKE UP!!

  19. EMRaiders Says:

I’m just throwing this out there. Is there any chance in Raiderhell that we could package McFadden, Howard, JLH, Boller, Carlisle, Routt, and anybody else for some Oline help, a RB, a vet WR and a draft pick for next year?

  20. EMRaiders Says:

Good point on Tonga, not really sure, but if that’s the case, I’m down for that.

  21. lefty12 Says:

Priest-or N.Miller who looked good last year before getting injured.

Wonder if 1st cuts will bring any surprises-ie. JLH,Watkins,N.Miller,etc.-or will they be the guys we never heard of?I’m guessing no names so some of the bubble skill players can play most of the Seattle game.

  23. armond Says:

dont like the holdup of ford on returns myself. defense wasnt aggressive at all this game. the pass rush didnt much but the coverage was pretty good. ware might make the team with wmcfadden. i think we will struggle with fast and physical 34 defenses especially running the ball. i would also like to see us run more with a fb lead.

BS. Both teams were trying to win tonight. You could see it. The vanilla Raiders scheme you’re talking about is their system, period.

  29. raiderrej Says:

i left at the end of the 3rd and was proud of what we put out… but the Defense will give some big ones to chris johnson come week 1

  30. BloodRaider Says:

McClain got pushed around on that big run, he had the deer in the headlights feel, I just turned 21 last month what am I doing here, thing going on. We’re asking a hell of a lot of this young man, in time he will be an outstanding MLB, just needs experience and the confidence and muscle memory that comes with it. Its like he’s analyzing what to do, but the NFL is very much faster than the SEC. He needs to learn to know what to do at NFL speed with out having to think about it.

  31. armond Says:

lefty im pissed that they would rather have figurs take away returns from nmiller.yamon hasnt shown much as a returner and for some reason lil nicky gets in the game way 2 late. also dont like how the refs fooked us over in the preseason. 2 bs calls on 4th down and a td that was never scored. kam wimberly was held right in front of the refs in the 1rst qtr and they missed that call. there were several other holds the whiners got away with. oh and that super mario penalty was full of sh!t.

  32. raiderrej Says:

i think this game wont define the season but something that seems consistent is that we give up big plays every game…

  33. lefty12 Says:

I agree about Figurs.Actually can’t see him making the team but since we don’t have insight to what our couches see,who knows. As for the penalties, that’s part of being a Raider fan-you know we aren’t going to get the benefit of the doubt-or the obvious in some cases.

  34. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

Nick Miller is not in the plans….McClain is only as good as the line in front of him…the offense rises and falls with the o-line.

Today was a terrible go for the o-line by the way…got the QB injured, linebackers knifing through with no resistance.

Terrible. And the penalties looked just like prior years.

They needed this game….realize they have a lot of work to do.

Hopefully the Raiders have a better understanding of who should and SHOULDN’T be on the field

    ——————–

That’s going to happen when you run a system that primarily uses one deep safety. Especially when that safety is not a good tackler.

  36. BigTed707 Says:

The Raiders were in full melt-down near the end of the second half.

Kudos to Gradkowski for salvaging the situation, without him, this loss would have been a lot worse.

    This one didn’t count.

  37. TheyCallMeAssassin Says:

So, did anyone else catch Javon Walker’s big touchdown reception from Sage Rosenfels?

  38. lefty12 Says:

Opening drive the Oline looked good, especially Veldheer on the power runs up the gut.

  39. tazZraider Says:

people its only preseason. i know its big for us because unlike the other good teams we’ve been one of the worst teams in the league so its big for us but relax. mcclain made rookie mistakes like every rookie makes but at least we saw him make a few plays that morrison rarely did he’ll get better from what i heard he’s intelligent and an avid watcher of film. we’ve never had a draft pick like him and i’m sure he’ll fix his mistakes and become the outsanding mike lb we drafted him for. mcfadden showed some of his playmaking ability but come on guys some of those runs weren’t his fault due to horrid blocking. offensive line looked better under veldheer and he made rookie mistakes but other than that he was a major upgrade over satele and morris. we’ll be fine we are the most unpredictable team in the league and anything can happen but personally i haven’t felt optimistic and positive about any raider team like this one in the last 7 years. we’ll be fine. we just need to fix the o line and the run d will be fine when seymour comes back. we dont need another pessimist like real madden raider on this blog.

    ———-

Definitely. The best run blocking I’ve seen out of the starters yet.

  41. tazZraider Says:

to tell you the truth i was extremely disappointed with huff and our lack of use of mitchell with the starters. huff still has a problem with open field tackling and we’re going to allow a lot of big plays if runners make it to the second level if huff is still a fs. i dont understand at all why mitchell once again again barely had action in the game. thats one of the few mistakes cable is doing not bringing mitchell into action and seeing what he could do.

  42. BigTed707 Says:

W-Mac played well in coverage, as did Routt.
That punt return for a touchdown really sucked.

  43. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    Taz,

Mike Mitchell coverage skills are not as good as Huff or Branch.

Also, I am glad this preseason is over with. I have seen enough to konw that Michael Bush is the starter…when he goes down or out…this team loses.

The o-line IS NOT good enough to be primarily a pass offense…QBs will get killed

The penalties once again show how undisciplined the Raiders are.

And for the record…Eric Pears and Mario Henderson are doing their best job to make sure Jason Campbell never starts again!

  44. BigLefty Says:

R McClain had a terrible game but:

    Did Trevor Scott play?

Talk about a non factor in a game!

He went to the wrong gap, got blown up by smaller running backs blocking him, ran by the runner with the ball. Never heard his name called once.

Hey Tom it looks like your T Scott linebacker experiment is an utter failure!!!!!!!

  45. Hobs Gnarly Says:

giving up big plays ….maybe due to the fact of such a light hitting camp. hopefully when they start getting acclaimated to hitting and getting hit, they will improve.

  46. tazZraider Says:

    snb,

i know what you man but we have not seen enough of mitchell and what he can do. we can at least put him in 1st downs and huff in passing downs because huff is making the same mistakes he did since he was a rookie. im glad the preseason is over and i agree with you about bush being our runningback cuz this guy consistently gets 4-5 yards on 1st down which helps the offense.and i cant wait for how they unleash asomugha this season!!!

  47. JB Says:

I’m amazed. Why is there no yells for DMac’s head? I understand the blocking was not as great as it could have been but HE WAS TERRIBLE! He is not nor will he ever be an NFL RB.(PERIOD)!!! Move him to slot receiver now and cut our losses. Keep Bush Bennett & Cartwright as the RB’s. DMac couldn’t run out of a wet paper bag. Great hands, you bet. Good in the open, most times. Effective as a RB, NEVER.

Now, on to my next rant. Veldheer should be our starter at center. Yes, he needs to learn to spot blitzes and alike but he’s head & shoulders above Satele and I don’t even count Morris. He’s a smart kid and will pick it up quickly. We also need to move Walker to RG now. Find a new ORT now. Groom BCampbell for OLT.

Some people that can leave now include Pears, Figurs, Heard, Morris, Rodd, Watkins, Tonga, Joseph, Gunheim, Eugene,Thomas & Norris. That will be a good start.

If Gradkowski was the #3 QB coming into this game, he’s now the #2 QB. I don’t know if that means Boller or Brennan is on the bubble – probably Brennan.

I would have liked to win tonight but I’m willing to say their 3’s are better than our 3’s. Big deal. I think we can definitely be competitive with them when we meet again. I do believe the results will be different.

In Closing, DMAC to WR. That’s the ONLY place he can possibly succeed. Soon he will be known as DaBustus.

WTF do you guys care about winning a pre-season game. W’s are meaningless in the preseason. When Grad threw the 2nd TD, the Niners were still leaving their first unit in there. We scored 3 TD’s against their first units. At that moment, we were up 21-17 based on first units. That is what’s most important. How did the first units do against the other team? After 7 years, I can finally breathe a sigh of relief that we have an nfl caliber offense and a potentially very good D.

    —————-

bro, we had a big discussion about McNabb and JC vs Grad. I told you that our Oline would still get either McNabb or JC killed. They did just that. Grad gives us the best option based on his mobility to bail out the line’s weakness.

  55. aig-raiders Says:

For all those Raider Fans who were questioning Grad’s contribution to our org, I hope he finally convinced you what he can do with our team. Grad is the man based on the current Oline that he has. It took him one game to do what JC couldnt do for 2 games. Grad gives us the best chance to win and Al Davis may be half way right about the 1980 comparison. JC is Pastorini and Grad is Plunkett.

    In Bruce I Trust.

  56. Hobs Gnarly Says:

man i am just agreeing with everyone, grads’ mobility is like gannons.

  57. aig-raiders Says:

    Hobs,

When Gannon arrived here, his mobility was what bailed the team out at the time until the Oline matured. Until our Oline is consistent, we need Grad back there. Jason will be knocked out again this year. #70 Walker gave up a sack today. I think Walker has avg 1 sack given up for every preseason game so far. Mario is avg but not elite. The rookie Center will make mistakes this year. That means we will for sure see both JC (Al Davis commitment) and Grad this year.

  58. Hobs Gnarly Says:

it’s hard for anyone let alone an ego maniac like al to admitt when something isn’t what they think it is. i like campbell but i just think gradkowski is a more fiery leader whose ability to scramble is the difference. his pump fake on that miller td was gannon like. he just feels right to me. nothing against campbell really, he is serviceable but there is something not quite right there.

  59. beach Says:

Positives: Tommy Kelly in good playing condition; Campbell and Gradkowski are doing well. Negatives: Michael Bush with a broken left thumb. Let’s pray it’s not bad. DMAC is no better than a 2nd string running back. We have nobody to replace Bush. Other than Seabass, the special teams was pathetic. Can we find a return man?

  60. Hobs Gnarly Says:

i am more concerned about the defense and how they call their plays.

  61. aig-raiders Says:

    Beach,

So true bro. Regardless of JC or Grad, I feel good about the QB position. I dont know why the same people that bash Grad are still so love with McSkinnyLeggs. Other than our kickers, spec team is a joke. They need to fire the spec team coach.

  62. Hobs Gnarly Says:

that defense has a chance to be special if someone lets them be all they can be and not be what other teams expect us to be, if you know what i mean. think the eagles game last year in how we surprised them.

  63. aig-raiders Says:

    Hobs,

I think the D will be fine. D Bryant is not the same as Seymour. Of the 3 teams we faced so far, the Niners have the best rushing O. All in all, their first units should have scored 13 points against our first unit. I dont count the spec team TD and I assume that they should have made the first FG. 13 points through 2.5 quarters is not bad against a playoff caliber team Niners.

  64. aig-raiders Says:

    nite all

  65. beach Says:

Aig and Hobs, Think about it. We play these bums for real in less than 2 months. We couldn’t show too much on D tonight. I’m scared and concerned about stopping the run and Chris Johnson in Tennessee in 2 weeks!

  66. Hobs Gnarly Says:

i think we really need to consider kevin m for a tryout at center, if nothing else to mentor jv.

i kind of have the feel that i had with the start of the gruden era, they are building on something here and consistencey with cable is so key. a lot of u don’t like him but he is doing well in handling the overall team and guys are playing for him. we could be playoff bound this year but next year superbowl should be focus, if everything stays in place and we have as good an off-season.

  67. Hobs Gnarly Says:

beach this team just needs to be creative with game planning and forget what we are supposed to do because we are the raiders if you know what i mean. do what works to win.

  68. Hobs Gnarly Says:

the problem with dhb catching the ball in his stomach is sooner or later that ball is going to bounce off his pads and into the hands of a defender for a td at the most unfortunate time, like with the afc west title at stake. at least he caught it. give props.

a lot of people keep blaming the safeties for our problems on d, but no matter who we have in there seems to suck….perhaps it’s the scheme and not the player. mm is not the answer, it’s just al’s scheme. be fair, i know a lot of u are al guys and maybe your paid to do that (free tickets anyone?).

  69. Violent Hands Says:

I tthink the team will be fine with better ST play….im still wondering why the havent fire the skinny guy ST sucked last year also after he took over from kiffins biotch

  70. Que Says:

I havent seen the game yet , Im 5 hours ahead of time but I am reading the post and Jerry plus tweets. To know what happen last night. I am surprised how fast some are starting a qb controversy and its Jason fault. I have posted a few times on here and the raiders still have the same issue. Offensive defensive line? What will we do if richard seymour gets hurt and we have to count on a young d line. There’s still time to pick up some players who can still play very well . Teams will trade vets plus cut vets who are good to make room for young studs. Al I hope your getting some help with monitoring other teams moves. Too many guys are slipping past us and thats not how it used to be. I watch the redskins trade for a tackle from new orleans and I knew we could have used him.

  71. Que Says:

And Tom Cable and Al should continue to draft players and let them smash each other during training camp like real powerhouse teams do. B-more smashes each other and if someone gets hurt they have another draftee available to continue power football. Why wait until the season starts to see if your team can block and open up wholes or even tackle . Thats just scary compared to the raiders teams the past couple years.

  72. Hobs Gnarly Says:

don’t know if anyone is accusing jc of being at fault, some of just prefer what we see as a better option in grads. i see gannon in him and his ability to make something out of nothing. i think jc should be a great qb, i just prefer grads.

  73. GhostToMost Says:

Well Cable certainly squashed any potential quarterback controversy, didnt he?

Sounds to me like Campbell is going to be the guy, for better or worse. Time will tell if thats a good thing or not.

  74. ENGLANDRAIDER Says:

It is a bit alarming to read about the Campbell and Bush injuries not to mention the score.

Gore’s 49yard run kind of looks like last year’s situation isn’t remedied yet.
Let’s face it, we’re playing rookies in primary roles and there are going to be mistakes. Plus Gore is actually a really good back and Seymour didn’t play.
Houston and McClain are going to be great players and should get better as the year goes on.

Campbell’s injury has to be disturbing for the player himself as well as us. That kind of thing can really get serious.
Bush just broke his thum on his left hand. People play with broken fingers.

Gradowski looks to be still very good. He’s got a little Gannon in him. We should be feeling good about the quarterback position.
Apart from having both Campbell AND Gradowski, there is absolutely NO Russell.
    What’s not to like?

We almost certainly didin’t give anything away to the ’49’s since we play them this year and since they look to win their divison and be a factor this year, the Raiders are looking better than they have in a long time

  75. LhayeS37 Says:

#1-too much man to man defense. #2-o-line still average at best.#3mcfadden is a stiff, looks like another bust.#4-still one of the worst tackling teams in the nfl.#5-chris johnson will run for 200 yards in week one.#6if this team wins 8 games it will be a friggin’ miracle.i’m not drinking the kool aid……#7-not enough discipline, and all this chatter about about a new outlook is just cheap talk

  76. LhayeS37 Says:

cambell has a little gannon in him?maybe.0009% of gannon.sorry but cambell is not even close to gannon.you guys think he is that good?your insane…

  77. LhayeS37 Says:

your right about bg though.smart but not a big arm

  78. LhayeS37 Says:

no team in the nfl has fewer defensive looks than this team.too much man,not enough zone.al will never learn.team wins 6 games

  79. LhayeS37 Says:

don’t get your hopes up about this year.be cynical and hope for the best, but prepare for another lost season

  80. GhostToMost Says:

Unfortunately I cant share in the optimism either. I like Jason Campbell, but Im not in love with the guy. I think Gradkowski is a better player and a better fit for this team. The guy has leadership qualities, and his enthusiasm is infectious. You can see him lift up the whole team when he takes the field. But, Al loves Campbell and apparently so does Cable. Jason is going to be the guy for better or worse, barring injury.

Our wideouts are weak other than Murphy, but Id like Murphy a lot more if he was our #2. Im still very skeptical about DHB. Anything we get out of him is a plus at this point. Zach Miller is a fine player, but when your go-to receiver is a tight end, youve got issues.

Ive given up on McFadden. The guy is simply not an NFL running back, period. Still getting ankle tackled and tripping over his own feet. Ive never, NEVER seen an NFL running back with such poor balance. Time to move DMC to receiver and hope that we can get something out of him there. As a RB, he is useless. Bush has a broken thumb, the o-line still cant run block. Their pass blocking isnt much better.

The defense looks like the same old Raiders defense, the d-line has been getting after the QB, and our secondary is solid. But we still cant stop the run.

I was about to gag listening to Papa last night using Seymours absence as an excuse for the poor run play. Please, Seymour started all 16 games last season and this team finished 29th against the run. That and he didnt record a sack in the final 10 games. Seymour sucks, yeah I said it. If there is a more overpaid and overrated player in the NFL right now, Id like to know who. But we had to trade a first round pick and then franchise the guy, because you just know how Al loves his big stars and Pro Bowl players and past Super Bowl winners. One more “great player” for him to gloat about.

Speaking of “great players”, anyone see the graphic during last nights game about all the great Raider receivers in history? Yeah, Lance Alworth was on the list, even though he never played for the Raiders. And so was Randy Moss. Ugh, just ugh, this team has become a total parody of itself. Its sad.

I dont know, I hate to be a Negative Nancy but im just not feeling it. This looks like another 5 win team to me.

  81. #NFL News and Notes – August 29, 2010 | The Other 31 Says:

[...] for 46 yards…With a stellar performance last night, Raiders quarterback Bruce Gradkowski sprinted ahead of Kyle Boller in the battle to back-up [...]

  82. Raider75 Says:

And the love fest for Gradkowski continues. Typical that you guys show after Campbell gets hurt to explain how much better Grads can play.

Here is a clue. Campbell had a 117 QB rating when he got hurt.

He opened the game with a scoring drive for the second week in a row, but yet you guys say he has no leadership skills?

You guys act like Campbell was having a bad game before Gradkowski came in. He had 2 of his drives stall because of penalties and then he got HURT.

  83. Hobs Gnarly Says:

it’s better than a five win team and we had no business winning five with russell under center. the teams attitude is something new. they can win, if al doesn’t contribute anymore than what he has done. if they scrap the vanilla al defense and let the coaches call the plays with what the situation warrants, they will win more than they lose. however, if cable can’t get al to losen the grip of what he wants done then we win 8. al only wants to win with his plays, otherwise he’s a fool in THIS day and age.

  84. 860Todd Christensen Says:

The Raider/Niner game will be on NFL channel at 11:00pm tonight, Eastern Time, for those who didn’t see it. BTW, as sloppy as this game was, we were one dropped pass away from winning it, in spite of our O-line trying to give it away…..

  85. TerrapinRaider Says:

You have to be out of your mind to believe that Seymour sucks. Such a comment is completely ludicrious!

Grads is a high quality backup. Don’t get it confused. IF Hue came his foot on SFs throat the Campbell led offense would have continued running up the scoreboard. But he let go to check out DMC. Your argument is near frivilous because if Hue did keep his foot down you would not have said a word.

Sure DHB needs to keep showing what he’s got; but too many people are making an issue if he catches a ball using his body. LISTEN you know nothings …If the ball is coming straight at you over the middle chances are you are NOT going to catch it with your hands out. ITS THE MIDDLE!!!! You catch the ball and prepare for the hit.

Its soooo funny as I was watchin the game on my PC and had the cowgirls vs texans on the big screen I saw Roy Williams catch the ball just like DHB did running through the middle of the defense not soon before DHB made the same sort of catch. A CATCH IS A CATCH!

This is the first time they’ve really targeted him and he looks better than Murphy out there. And you would be hard pressed to say I’m lying about that. Even that short ball he got from Campbell I saw the guys strength ..almost broken the tackle and looking to turn it up field for the TD. This guy is going to be dangerous

  86. Hobs Gnarly Says:

look you prefer campbell, i prefer gradkowski. it’s just something i see in grads and obviously don’t see in jc. jc is a good qb and certainly better than jam he will do fine, i just prefer gradkowski cause i like the energy he brings. both are other teams retreads just grads seems to fit better with the guys.

  87. Kirk Says:

Yesterday’s game showed why left offensive tackle is the most important position on the football field.

  88. Hobs Gnarly Says:

lets admit to ourselves that gannon was a high quality back up until he hit the raiders and took control and i see the same in grads, he controls that group of 11 and to ME it appears they respond to it better.

some of you guys anaylze things too much, you look at what you think is talent instead of intangibles which is a typical al davis thing and that is why we draft the likes of russell. until you get the idea that some people have what it takes to succeed regardless of arm strength and speed you will get big whiffs.

  89. TerrapinRaider Says:

Veldheer is waaayyy better than Satele when it comes to pass and run blocking. The pockets were beutiful that 1st drive. Then SF started getting in their delayed blitzes and what have you.

That is what scares me about starting Veldheer. I would not be pissed if Satele still starts because he knows the coverages better than the kid right now.

I don’t think Veldheer can hack it at LT with his short arms. Could be wrong but Gallery had the same issue. Veldheer getting worked by Peppers sort of gave that clue as well.

  90. Hobs Gnarly Says:

it’s all good until the ball bounces off his pads and into the arms of the chargers defender to kill the drive that wins the afc west. bad technique poisons the stew. why bother teaching the correct way to catch a ball?

  91. Hobs Gnarly Says:

i don’t understand why people continue to defend crappy players? if russell was here, it would still be it’s not his fault yada yada yada. what possible motivation do you have for defending al’s guys? dhb is al’s guy, no if’s and’s or but’s. i applaud him for having a break out game, lol but come on dude has some serious work to put in despite what he has already done and that is commendable, at least he is working at it unlike jr.

    **************************

Really Hobs …I’m not saying its not an issue. I just think right now its looked at like an eagle how he catches every ball. No WR not even great WRs catches every ball with their hands. They just don’t.

He is catching with his hands more from the limited views we got and also from the reports. But don’t expect every ball to arrive where he can or even should stick his hands 2 feet in front of him to catch.

TO, one of the best WRs to play the game, yet has some of the worse hands in the league.

  93. TerrapinRaider Says:

Not necessarily equivocating TO to DMC …just pointing out how critical we are being here. A catch is a catch and the young man works very hard to get better. If this game was any indication we he has a bright future in front of him.

  94. r8eray Says:

    Good Morning Nation!

  95. Hobs Gnarly Says:

dhb is not TO. this guy needs to be doing it better because he was the first receiver drafted last year. he should be solid with few mistakes, he’s not a development player at that high a draft pick. those types of mistakes will cost you sooner or later and he needs to drop those bad habits right away. in no way shape or form does he look better than murphy to me and i like to be a realist, f what ever dhb makes, it’s not coming outta my pocket. use who’s best if you want to win. keep it real.

  96. Hobs Gnarly Says:

i already commended his breakout game gave props, but like i said he needs to do it better than everone else considering where he was drafted and the players they could have had instead of him. they didn’t draft him to be a delvelopmental player, they could have still got him in the second round if they really wanted. your type of argument infuriates me because it’s just to defend al’s scholarship players. remember dudley? man, intangibles are what’s needed to play football and to be impact players, what are dhb’s intangibles?

  97. WenzhouRaider Says:

I’m glad to hear about McClain making some plays and getting burned on a few too.

I’d rather hear he’s getting burned on plays than him disappearing altogether.

  98. r8eray Says:

DHB is a whole lot better than last year!

  99. TerrapinRaider Says:

Just watched highlights on NFLN …the long Gore run went straight through Seymours gap. Huff gave Gore a good shot but Gore is just too “balanced” unlike our guy to go down. The Center got up field and blocked out McClain.

Hobs – Dude I know the guy needs work. No doubt about it. He would even tell you that. But ppl here …once they have it out for you just wont stop no matter how good the kid does or improves. Who knows, the kid may have a better year than Crabtree. But ppl still will be skeptical.

  100. TerrapinRaider Says:

Its the old arguement ..is it the LBs that must shed the blocks of the OLinemen or is it the DLinemen that must keep the Olinemen from getting to that level and on the LBs.

My point of view. It may have been a different scenario if Seymour was in. And McClain has a resposibility to shed the block no matter who it is.

  101. TerrapinRaider Says:

That 3rd & 15 conversion Grads & DHB connnected on was pretty freakin’ nice.

  102. r8eray Says:

I would use Kyle Boller as bait….wait and see if anyone takes it!

  103. Hobs Gnarly Says:

yeah, dhb is better than last year, but taht is not saying much, until he proves he was a top ten pick you and him will have to listen to it. has shown dediacation which is a plus but got to have the numbers worthy of a number one draft pick. that’s just the way it is.

  104. NoMoreFargasForever Says:

Campbell,Grads>PurpleDrank I almost jumped out of room on first DHB catch! Still to many big runs given up on D.
    GO RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  105. Hobs Gnarly Says:

terrapin, i would have to agree with you that was a nice catch by dhb. give him his props on that one.

  107. Just Fire Baby Says:

Gradkowski will get some starts this year, either through injury or performance.

    You can book that.

  108. TerrapinRaider Says:

I’m not saying i disagree at all. I just think ppl need to relax a bit and let this thing work itself out. Overly critical is all I’m saying.

Now when it comes to DMC ..he’s a RB ..he should be lights out RIGHT NOW! Not neccessarily saying DHB shouldn’t but the nature of the position say that can take a year or two. Same goes for the QB position.

DHB needs to tryout Yoga …get some damn balance man!

  109. Just Fire Baby Says:

DHB looked so much more confidant and fluid in his routes.

Night and day from last night.

  110. TerrapinRaider Says:

    Correction: DMC!

  112. Just Fire Baby Says:

The McFadden defenders say we need to use him like Reggie Bush.

I agree to a point. Bush’s first 3 years he had over 100 carries (twice over 150) and never averaged more than 3.8 ypc.

Last year, he had a whole 70 carries (about 30% of what Fargas had) and averaged over 5 ypc.

Less is more with these type of guys. About 4-5 carries a game, and about the same amount of passes.

McFadden’s most carries in a game came against Denver last year. You know……the 3 fumble game.

  113. r8eray Says:

What was Jackson thinking…having McFadden run up the middle!!!!

  114. r8eray Says:

    4x!!!

  115. TerrapinRaider Says:

I think Hue will get this one right. He actually did a good job testing out his players last night. He kept feeding DMC to see what he had. And you can now see that Bush is the better option because he’s more consistent picking up those hard to get yards.

Although the line not picking up the blitzes screwed the results.

  116. Hobs Gnarly Says:

ppl are going to be critical of him because of where he was drafted, it is what it is……life is not fair but this kid would have been there in the next round and nothing would be said about his development. i hope the young man overcomes it. i am no fan of dmac, he needs to be doing it better then most as well, but it’s what we got to work with, use his strengths like charlie garner, out of the backfield.

  117. r8eray Says:

use his strengths like charlie garner, out of the backfield.

Are we the only ones that see this??

  118. r8eray Says:

    Erik Pears….you need to go!!!!!!!!

  119. Just Fire Baby Says:

I understand having to keep the defense “honest”, but only to a point.

  120. Bob Marley Says:

Bottom line, the 49ers are universally praised as a tough, physical, up and coming team ready for the playoffs and yet…

With most of the starters in the field, the Raiders still managed to be leading into the 3rd quarter (then it was all reserves).

The 49ers highly regarded starting defensive unit was victimized for 24 points.

Here’s something that impressed me last night, after the the 49ers took a 10 point lead, the Raiders fought their way back, something that rarely happened in the past because:

    a) a double digit lead used to seem to be insurmountable.

    b) the team would usually looked beaten at that point.

So, to watch them stay in the game and turn it around vs their starting defense was a pleasant surprise.

  121. TerrapinRaider Says:

I have to watch this tennessee game. from the score looks like they got handled by the panthers

  128. J Wiggle Says:

It was pretty comical how bad Walker and Pears were last night. In spite of them, we still put up points.

DMac didn’t fumble so I’d call it a successful night for him.

DMac didn’t have a chance on the second series. For some reason, Henderson and Reece get confused on who should block Willis, and he’s dropped for a 2 yd loss by an untouched Willis, lol.

Meyers dropping the ball on 3rd down to kill the drive hurt.

  136. r8eray Says:

Meyers…sshiiiishhh!! Bet he won’t do that again!

  137. J Wiggle Says:

Veldheer missed Willis on 1st play of the next series and DMac is dropped for a 3 yd loss.

Next play was a big pass play to DMac called back by Louis Murphy penalty not lining up correctly.

  138. J Wiggle Says:

    LOL!

McFadden tripped up by no one on the next play. gain of 2 yds. Should’ve been a lot more as it was well blocked.

  139. aig-raiders Says:

    morning,

    1. We can be rest assured that V will start at Center. an Al Davis order.

    2. JC will start but Grad will relieve him when he gets killed this year. The Raiders will be fine with either guy so I feel good about our team.

    3. Mike Huff just learned last nite that he is not MM34 so he better wraps his arm on the runner next time.

    4. Our special team coach needs train better because we are not getting any running lanes or coverage.

    5. Our first string vs their first string lasted for 2.5 quarters and the score should have been 21-13. I give the niners 3 points for that missed fg and take away the return TD if you want to know how the teams moved against each other.

    Well said.

Might be time to send him back to nickel DE exclusively.

Tom Howard might still have some life.

  145. ohioraider Says:

Bring on Grads! More heart and passion than JC. We need a leader like Gannon.

Oh, and way to go Mario, fat ass!

  146. GG Says:

I’m gonna be a bit controversial here, but I’ve been watching Goethal and McClain quite a bit in these games, and I know there’s a big difference between first and second/third units standard of play, but I think Goethal could be a bit better than McClain.

Awareness/Gap-awareness on rushing plays especially, a knack for it, not getting caught up in blockers, and having a bit of oomph in his hits. McClain has done good things, not dissing him completely, but he does get lost a bit on his bad plays and seems to lumber around a little.

  147. armond Says:

ill give grads credit for what he did. he is clearly #2 not boller. people are sayin his mobility is best for this oline but yall forget that campbell showed that same kind of mobility the 1rst 2 games. grads wouldve got fooked up the same same as jc and probably been hurt worse. didnt super mario get him squashed last year against washington? this grads love affair is just ridiculous. our oline man for man just doesnt matchup well enuff to dominate. they physically as a unit dont have it.

  148. Raider O Says:

    Cut Eugene, Williams, and Cooper.

Start Branch and MM34 at Ss.

    Wassup fellas!

I don’t know. Veldheer missed one block, but other than that it’s the same ole, same ole. I guess Reece is new, but it seems to me that Henderson missed Willis. Why he chose to help Gallery on that seal reaks of ZBS non sense.

We need to have our guy identify a man, and go get him.

I’ll have to say that Grads certainly moved up my depth chart. The guy has something about him in the Silver and Black. I’ll give him that. Knows the offense, VERY confident, and pretty accurate.

Have no problem with him if he has to play, but JC has done nothing to disappoint and is still my choice for #1.

  154. J Wiggle Says:

How many times are we going to let Willis come in UNBLOCKED?

This time Langston Walker is playing to Henderson left as a LLT??? Whatever he was, he just didn’t even realize Willis was right next to him while he was running backwards. Hilarious stuff.

  155. Raider O Says:

    PB:

    Lechler
    Nnamdi
    Seymour
    Z Miller
    Condo

Maybe Branch too. He had 1 vote last year.

  156. J Wiggle Says:

Zach Miller gets handled by Manny Lawson, drops Bush in the backfield.

  157. J Wiggle Says:

LaVoy takes out our QB on the next play. Our blocking by needs a lot of work. All of them. It’s always one person making a mistake.

  158. r8eray Says:

  159. armond Says:

j its not even about him playin its that people act like he now has some kind of mobility that jc doesnt have when he just showed us that in 2 games.im glad bg played well cuz i wasnt too thrilled with boller. bottomline is our offense needs alot of work with chaz and dmc out. we need those 2 out there and like campbell said they havent been able get everyone 2gether. we wont establish a true offensive identity until we see all of our pieces.

  160. BigTed707 Says:

I agree with what MR was saying last night about not going deep on 4th and long with over a minute left on the clock and a timeout. Hue/Grads MUST get a first down right there instead of bomb one to the end-zone. I’ll give Hue a pass because it’s pre-season, hopefully he can iron out some play-calling mistakes before the regs.

I give Grads some credit for throwing Watkins a very catchable pass, but would have liked to have seen better clock management in the two minuet drill.

  161. J Wiggle Says:

    Armond,

The things are offense needs to clean up are Oline assignments, and 3rd down drops. I think the play calling and personell are fine, but things like Willis not even being blocked and Murphy and Meyers dropping passes are what holding us back.

  162. Raider O Says:

The OL Guru needs to fix the OL, or he should be fired!

  163. armond Says:

as for the defense we have a new starting front 7 with some inexperienced players mixed in there. i expect some confusion and inconsistency from time 2 time. dont think the run d will be fixed right away but it will be improved. seymours absense makes a big difference. our pass rush is our strength so when it disappears its tougher on us until that run d gets straightened out. and yes willis was left unblocked 2 many times but that was dmacs fault 2. wait till brian sees this he gon pitch a real fit.

  164. J Wiggle Says:

Not too worried about the Defense. I think Seymour coming back and Henderson moving ahead of Bryant on the depth chart will make a HUGE difference.

Although I do agree that the Trevor Scott at WLB isn’t giving us much.

  167. TheyCallMeAssassin Says:

Scott disappeared last night, but the previous two games he’d played well. Still like him better than Howard, who isn’t a strong tackler and seems to have taken a step back in his coverage skills too.

  168. RaiderLen Says:

    Morning gang.

Big John didn’t look to bad last night. He seemed to hold up at the POA pretty well. Got off some blocks…etc

I looks as though in order to spring Dmac on a running play, it will almost have to be blocked perfectly.

Agreed that T Scott didn’t flash much last night.

  169. J Wiggle Says:

Really focusing on Trevor Scott at LB to start the 2nd half. Don’t see how he helps us there. Pass rush specialist only.

  170. armond Says:

dhb looks like andre johnson out there. guess he did get up to 220 and a powerful 220 at that. he spun out with ease and almost ran in for a td. could care less about catching with his gut. he dropped 1 caught 3. glad they made him a part of the offense. the oline is the key to our season. we have playmakers at every skill position. its time they kick azz. my solution for st is to make dmc/ford kr and let ford handle pr. use dmc in everyway let bush be the pounder get reece active in the pass game and use more of a moving pocket.and chaz get yo sh!t straight to be that 3rd posession wr we need. also stop callin cartwright notwright. he is officially known as bokim woodbine aka cantgetwright.

  171. J Wiggle Says:

Scott disappeared last night, but the previous two games he’d played well.

Are you saying that because the defense overall played pretty well? I don’t recall Scott making one play as a LB. Nickel DE? Absolutely makes plays.

There was a poster who called out Scott last week and went on a limb and predicted Ricky Brown starts there..

  180. mistic1 Says:

I love it!!! Campbell is a pro and is getting better every week. DHB had his best day yet, he has improved, its not just hype! He & murphy may never have tim brown type hands, but becuase of their talent and work ethic they will form a dangerous threat as they mature and get better. Dmac looked very good, bush pounded the rock, reminiscent of wheatly kaufman. Dmac looked the best he has since the kc game!

Veldheer was a major upgrade, one missed assignment but we cant expect a rookie to be perfect. I would rather have him learn on the job at this point, rather than watch satele flop again!

Mclaine made alot of plays and seemed much more natural this week. He is still doing alot of thinking, but you could see improvement week to week. He does over pursue and teams are cutting back on him, he is a rookie and he will learn in time.

Our d linemen are young and are learning how to be consitant threats, as we have seen teams adjust to our rush ends.

Bottom line this a very young team that is on a huge upswing, but there will be growing pains along the way. I also like the fact that we need to lick our wounds a little, it keeps the team hungry and humble, and shows where we need work. This year we are good for between 6-9 wins. The real payoff comes next year and after, as they build and grow together, into something special. Have patience nation things are looking up!

  181. J Wiggle Says:

The one drop DHB did have wsa a tough catch. The defender dove right in front of him and almost had the pick. Wasn’t like the drops we’ve been seeing from Murphy.

Yeah, but the question is will Veldheer better serve us playing LT, RT, or C?

Walker is killing fools when we run the ball to his side and has been “ok” in pass protection.

Henderson will give up 1-2 blindside sacks each game if we is left on an island. Will seems dominant the rest of the game.

Satele gets rag dolled often, but is serviceable since the QBs get the ball out so quickly.

I think we could give Mario help with an extra TE, a FB, and shorter drops, and we need Walker for the run game. Center might be the best place for him.

Today was a terrible go for the o-line by the way…got the QB injured, linebackers knifing through with no resistance.
    —————-

bro, we had a big discussion about McNabb and JC vs Grad. I told you that our Oline would still get either McNabb or JC killed. They did just that. Grad gives us the best option based on his mobility to bail out the line’s weakness.
    =======================================================
    AIG,

I hate this line of logic. Our o-line is garbage so get a QB that is scrappy enough to get by.

That doesn’t win playoff games or championships. Guys that win with their arms and can make all the throws win championships.

As far as Gradkowski is concerned. I don’t trust him over 16 gms. Al Davis and Hue Jackson saw the film on him last year and whatever he did in camp and made the decision to bring in Jason Campbell. Also, Campbell was moving the ball just fine until the DMAC experiment and Eric Pears and Mario Henderson doing their absolute best to sabotage the offense.

I am not interested in seeing the next Jeff Garcia or Kordell Stewart.

No more transition years….We should have picked up an OLineman in the draft the last few years.

The lines are nothing but duct tape and hope….

The Raiders need a guy that can stand in the pocket and sling the ball and make the reads and throws etc.

We have all seen magic acts evaporate over time.

If the O-Line is garbage…..THEN FIX THE O-LINE.

  206. armond Says:

trvoe scott is still learning a new position.he will make some plays and then get jacked up so we have to be patient.kam didnt do nothin yesterday either. defensively we seemed kind of flat. the niners have their complete defensive personality so its natural that they were more aggressive. we arent there yet so it will take some time.3 new lbs and 2 young dlineman wont gel right away. the secondary is nice tho

  208. ArmChair GM Says:

Veldheer played very well for a rookie starting his first game at a new position. He miised the protection call on the Willis run blitz, but he played an excellent overall game.

What we need is a Right Tackle. Walker should be moved inside to Right Guard. That is where he has had the most success as a Raider.

Mario Henderson needs to take his job a little more seriously. It’s like being a surgeon. You can’t have the attitude that, “I’ve had 4 successful surgeries in a row, so this patient I almost killed is no big deal.”

Mario almost got our starting QB killed last night!

It’s one thing to give up a sack, but to let a defensive end get to your QB blindsided is not ok. Mario should have pushed LaBoy more to the outside, so that at least LaBoy would have had to reach out and grab Campbell’s jersey or something in order to bring him down.

    He’s 6′7 335lbs for crying out loud.

Why all the negativity? Yes we lost the game, but we put up 21 points against one of the better 1st team defenesive teams in the league. Had a center making his first start there ever in the NFL. 221. Just Fire Baby Says:

As I said last night, Campbell got a tough dose of reality that our O-line stinks. A little too casual back there, and it he got carted off because of it.

Since Bruce played last year, and got his knees blown out, he is fully aware that the ball needs to come out very, very quickly, and he better be prepared to move around and the throw the ball away, and from weird body angles and the like.

Hopefully JC gets that, and isn’t stubborn about it, or he will get killed. So far, I have to see Bruce get hit hard while still holding the ball, his biggest hits have come (like his knee injury and last nights body slam)while GETTING RID OF THE BALL.

If Davis, Jackson saw what they needed to see, they aren’t trying to get McNabb, and then later Campbell. Also, in a QB starved league like this one…a 2nd round tender for a “starting” QB would be a no-brainer for about a half-dozen teams right now.

I’ve been lobbying hard for Gaither. The tear in his back is very small, or at least small enough for the Ravens’ coaching staff to think he’ll be back in action by week 2, if not by the season opener. People are saying he has a bad attitude, but the guy just wants a long term deal. His team has plenty of tackle depth, and evidently wants Oher manning the left tackle position. He sees the writing on the wall and wants to go somewhere where he’ll get paid. Enter the Raiders..?

Why all the negativity? Yes we lost the game, but we put up 21 points against one of the better 1st team defenesive teams in the league. Had a center making his first start there ever in the NFL. I like the direction we are moving in. Agreed our tackles are pretty weak but we still mover the ball. Drops and penaltys are what killed us. Also bogus PI calls against us on 4th down. Does anyone know which thumb Bush broke?
    ====================================================
    Because the fundamentals looked bad.

    1. Run defense was non-existant
    2. O-Line getting overwhelmed
    3. Penalties killing big plays
    4. Injuries
    5. Forcing round pegs into square spaces (DMAC)

We need to use McFadden like Reggie Bush.

70 carries, 45 receptions last year, and a Super Bowl ring, as well as returning some kicks occasionally.

    Sounds great to me.

Took the Saints 3 years to realize that 150 carries a year (about 10 a game) was a waste of about 4-5 plays a game.

    ———————

Exactly. We all saw what he can do in the passing game last night. If it wasn’t for the Murphy penalty, that could have changed the complexion of the first quarter dramatically.

What’s strange about D-Mac, is that when taking handoffs he rarely makes the first man miss, and when he catches passes, rarely does the first man bring him down.

    Can’t explain it.

    ++++++++==

I can DMAC is very fast, but has zero swivel… He can run by a guy who appears to have an angle, but cannot juke anyone, or stop and accellerate on a dime.

Example look at CJ Spillar… Get will stop and accelerate in an instant… He breaks ankles making guys miss…

  237. Just Fire Baby Says:

Murphy’s drop last night was comical, as was the week before.

At least he makes the occassional big play, but man his hands look awful at times.

Mostly what I didn’t like was that once again a physical football team basically dictated the tempo of the game.

I am very concerned about the O_line and the front 7 defense

  240. Just Fire Baby Says:

    CJ Spiller looks reeeeaaaaaaly good.

Maybe the first thing Fat Kidd got right.

  241. TerrapinRaider Says:

The line is missing a LT that won’t get resolved until next year. I think Cable even said they wanted to draft a LT in round 1 b4 mcclain.

Until then its Mario who is average. Not bad for a 3rd round pick; but for this team to get better and take it to the next level we need a LT who is very dependable.

My prediction: Sooner rather than later Veldheer starts at Center, Bruce Campbell moves in at RG midseason. Giving [Henderson, Gallery, Veldheer, Campbell, Walker].

Next year a LT is drafted and one or a few things occur. Henderson moves to RT or backs up LT …Bruce Campbell either remains RG or moves to RT (or LT but I dont think this is likely considering the current depth chart). If I were to make a bet I would say he remains RG.

Yield this next year: Draftee LT, Gallery LG, Veldheer C, Campbell RG, Walker/Henderson RT

  242. TheyCallMeAssassin Says:

I’d be a lot less concerned about this team if they had one legitimate offensive tackle, and one more starting-caliber back who could be an every down player if push came to shove.

    Marshawn Lynch
    Jared Gaither

I know people are worried about their “attitude problems”, but I think the lack of production out of these positions for the Raiders is more concerning. Especially considering Michael Bush’s thumb injury.

That’s because they can make it work with that front 7 of theirs….anchored by no compromise beasts up front.

Raiders have some work to do. Giving up 170+ yards on the ground last week and 165 yesterday….looks like more of the same to me. Lot of work

And the FREEKN penalties negating long gains. Eric Pears should be released with immediate effect.

For the QB, knowledge of the game, knowing the reads, audibles etc…is everything and to me is very tangible.

Intangible stuff to me is making plays out of nothing….inspiring teammates to do more than they are capable of….the magic of extending plays when evrything breaks down.

Being able to read a blitz should be mandatory.

Just that here in Oakland, we’ve been used to having some of the most incompetent players in NFL history the last 7 years because they were drafted based on H/W/S….like JaDavis

  306. Hobs Gnarly Says:

  307. TheyCallMeAssassin Says:

The offensive playcalling could use some variety, but I’ll hold off on any criticism until Week 1 when we get to see what the Raiders are really cooking up.

As far as the defense goes, I think the Cover 0 is a good base scheme. Eight men in the box to stop the run, any offensive player who stays in to block is just inviting more pass rushers. But I would like to see them be able to change up the Cover 0 with different looks. A few zone blitzes here and there, moving Nnamdi around. Now, they could very well be planning on doing this and just not showing it in the preseason. But given the Raiders’ history of saying they’re working on all kinds of new things and then never showing anything new over the course of the season, I of course have some doubts.

I think bad draft choices have sunk the offense and defense more than anything else.

I know I’ve said this before, but you can’t run a defensive scheme that utilizes one deep safety if the guy you have out there can’t tackle, and can’t cover all that well either.
    ==============================================
I still think blaming the safety for the run defense is a bit much.

The Front 7 keeps letting running backs break loose for long runs…run defense starts there…more importantly it starts with the D-Line.

Until the Raiders recognize this and FOCUS on this…they will continue to get mauled on the ground and lose games.

If you have a great leader with limited tangibles…you get guys like Chad Pennington, Jon Kitna and Jeff Garcia. Sure, they can get you 10 wins here and there….abut more than likely you make a run or two..get frustrated and start over.

Of course…when you a guy with tangilbes and no leadership….well…you get a pitcher full of Purple Drank

Not blaming him for the run defense in particular, but I think he has plenty to do with the big 40+ yard plays that the defense seems to give up at least once a game.

The front seven still need to work on being responsible for their respective gaps. They were doing much better at that in previous games, but Frank Gore and the big rookie Dixon exposed their flaws.

I don’t know who should be playing what J. I just know that the results are not going to have this team in a position to win.

We can’t give up 150 to 200 yards a game on the ground. Otherwise, it won’t matter about our pass rush and our secondary.

CC and Satele always get pushed back and thats why they both need to be replaced as soon as possible. That was the big difference I saw when commenting on Veldheer this game. He held the pocket vs Satele who usually gets pushed back into the pocket. The pocket was clearer with Veldheer in there.

The FINAL SCORE of a preseason game means nothing. But when you play your starters vs their starters for 3 quarters in a preseason game, it gives coaches and players alot to study, evaluate, and learn from.

It also can give you an overall assessment of the overall strengths and weaknesses of a team, so that the weaknesses don’t carry over into the regular season, but the positives do.

How many times are we going to let Willis come in UNBLOCKED?
    =======================================

That’s what happens when you start a rookie at center who never played center and then throw stunts and blitzes at him.
    ______________________________________________________

And that’s also why the Niners were stupid to do that in a preseason game. Now THE ROOKIE and his coaches will study that film and be prepared for it come week 6.
    ================================================

Exactly right. Veldheer did look pretty good pile blocking on that lst drive. So did Gallery. Of course Abrayo Franklin is on the sideline drinking soda which makes a difference.

  403. HayesDaze37 Says:

The Raiders’ O will practice against every blitz known to mankind. The rookie showing a mental weakness that was exploited by a good Defense will be a learning experience…but there was nothing fancy about the play/s where he got burned, and he quickly recognizes and corrects his mistakes.

Neither team last night revealed anything that the other side didn’t already know existed.

One thing is certain, though…Tom Cable’s job is relying on Tom Cable doing the job of molding a dominant O-Line. That only happens with a fresh body or two on it.

  404. RaiderLen Says:

What I do know about the 49ers game during the regular season is that Gore, Crabtree, and V Davis will be on the field for 4 quarters if healthy.

Yeah, the OL absolutely sucks if you go by the comments in here, here’s actual proof:

“The 49ers learned how the NFC West will never be won … and that’s for their starting defense to allow 21 points, 248 total yards and a 70.5 percent completion rate in more than two quarters of play.

Sure, the backup crews rallied to save the day in a 28-24 victory over the Raiders in an exhibition game Saturday at the Coliseum.

Just don’t think 49ers coach Mike Singletary forgot what the first-half defense did by the end of the game.

“We really didn’t do a good job consistently …I was going to send our first-team defense back out there.” Singletary said of his first-team defense, which played into the third quarter for the first time this exhibition season.

The starting 11 may have been fine with that. They, too, were embarrassed to let the Raiders pass for two touchdowns and punch in a goal-line run into the end zone.

The starting pass rush netted a single quarterback sack.

The starting secondary allowed 236 passing yards.”

I guess the OL had nothing to do with it.

The main concern I have is the instability on the O-line. With Seymour back, the D should be much more stout up front.

You can’t underestimate the importance of Richard Seymour’s absence on the line because he’s only “one player”, and then hype up Patrick Willis on the other side. After all if he was out of the lineup last night, then 75% of those defensive plays the Niners made don’t get made either.

Great players get paid to make great plays.
Willis is the Niners great player. Seymour is one of ours.

The defense should be fine come week 6 when we play them again.

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, shore up the o-line, we win the division.

Trade for Gaither now Big Al the ‘Over Czar’, as Warren Sapp called him, lol.

    That’s the point Armond!

Sometimes it’s ok to sacrifice a battle in order to win the war.

Thank you J Wiggle. That was my concern as well…plus the FREEKN penalties.

The penalties actually p^ssed me off the most. Because for two games Pears and Gallery have negated big plays AND put the offense in 2nd and 3rd and forever.

    We won’t win doing that.

Campbell got demolished on a couple of plays….the inside blitz by Willis and then Henderson just getting emasculated by the 49er DE.

Oh, I definitely agree. But if the opposing team is going to be in the red zone, I’d rather see them leave with only a field goal than eating up the clock with a bunch of 4-yard running plays, which is what our second teamers let the 49ers do.

The big plays are my biggest concern with this defense, and in the system the Raiders run, consistent FS play has a lot to do with that. The Raiders simply can’t give up two 40+ yard plays every game.

  451. JB Says:

Regarding our O-line play: The Raiders haven’t had a decent O-line since we installed the ZBS. Every successful Raider O-Line has been a power blocking type line. Am I the only one to see that A minus B equals C? Trash this ZBS – we can’t continually win with it. Last nights loss really exposed the O-Line. We knew the problem was there and now it’s official. Veldheer needs to start at center. He’s that much better than Satele. He’ll learn his calls – he’s a quick learner. Henderson is a stopgap OLT. We need to quickly develop BCampbell to replace him. Quite possibly, Henderson will be OK at the ORT position. RG needs to be replaced. Move Walker there as he’s having problems with 1 on 1 protection when out in the open.

    Regarding the running game:
DMac is NOT an NFL caliber RB. The experiment needs to be over. We all suspected it and now we know for sure. Putting DMac in the backfield as a RB is a waste of a down. Move him to WR now and run him out of the slot. He’ll be able to contribute there. BUsh, Bennett & Cartwright should be the #!, 2 & 3 RB. Reece would seem to have solidified the starting FB position. Let’s keep an eye out for the NY Jets FB castoffs. There may be some gold there.

    Regarding the defense:
Where do we begin? They just didn’t play as well as they should have. Huff needs to learn how to tackle. That or replace him with MM34. We still need that BIG NT. That should be our first priority in next years draft. ROMC’s rookiness showed. He was out of position too many times. That will improve with more NFL playing time. Routt did a decent job at CB. The backup CB’s & Safeties also were OK for the most part. Our 3’s weren’t as good as theirs.

    Regarding ST:
We need better coaching there. Figurs is not the answer nor is Cartwright at KOR. Use Ford or NMiller and let’s move on. Same for PR. We need better return blocking schemes – need to open more lanes. Our kicking game is the best in the NFL……PERIOD. Good job by both Jano & Lechler – but that’s no surprise.

    Regarding our receivers:
We are set at TE – no problems there. DHB looked improved over last year so I’ll cut him some slack – at least for 1 more year. Murphy should be our #2 WR. He’s a player and will help us win some games. He does need to improve on his concentration as he should have not dropped at least two passes that I recall. Watkins is gone. Should have had that last second pass. That’s what the caches will remember. We need to see more Ford & NMiller. Figurs gets cut so he’s gone with Watkins. Move DMac to slot WR now. JLH made more than his share of dumb plays last night. I’m not sure he survives.

    Regarding the coaching:
I understand that last night was plain vanilla night so I won’t comment on the play calling. Rather, I comment on Cable generically. He’s now in charge of the time outs and he did ok there. Good call on Jano’s FG if in fact that was his idea. He needs to focus his efforts on two main things. First, he needs to convince AD the DMac is a liability in the backfield and get a green light to move him to WR. Second, he needs to scrap the ZBS and install a power blocking scheme that works. He’s suppose to be the O-Line guru so let’s see some magic.

    Regarding the owner/GM:
He needs to immediately find us a BIG NT for the defense and to make a deal for an ORT. I would have also said OLT but you are not going to find one of those, you have to draft and develop your own. AD also has to cross he bridge like he did with JaLoser and admit that DMac is not who he thought he was and to make the best out of what he can do right – receive passes. He also needs to make it clear to Tom Cable that this team will go back to power blocking now or at least as quickly as possible.

    Summary:
I seen this team look worse so it’s not all bad. We’ll meet the Niners in the season and I think the results will be different next time. Am I an optionmist? Probably, but we are going to win some games this year as soon as the problems I’ve mentioned are fixed.

    Some obvious discards:
They include Pears, Figurs, Heard, Morris, Rodd, Watkins, Tonga, Joseph, Gunheim, Eugene,Thomas & Norris. That will be a good start.

2nd team D-Line got absolutey worked. Every play! Really asked a lot of the 2nd team Backers and Safeties to cover and stop the run.

another tscott fugg up tho it didnt cost us. remeber the 3rd and short play to moran norris that got stood up? adavis and bynam take on houston with rachal on kelly. kelly and houston hold up well leaving scott free to norris. norris hits a wall with his front facing the backfield. scott has a clear shot to pull him away from the los and even to strip the ball yet he is TACKLING rachal. wtf?? good thing we had a wall built or norris wouldve just had a unnecessary 1rst down made.

The Whiners only mounted any offense the second Tommie Kelly went out and John Henderson came in. Kelly played VERY well in that game at NT. So much for what that guy who calls himself the bauce thinks.

if you are local they are reboadcasting the game on 36.

  459. RaiderRetribution Says:

Since Mr. Routt has been playing so well, could Mr. Chris Johnson’s contract make him a cut casualty?

  460. RaiderRetribution Says:

We need to keep Mr. Mitchell, Mr. Branch, Mr. Bowie, and Mr. McFadden at safety positions, also keep Mr. Huff until we can trade him. Huff is great at covering TEs, just lousy against the run.

CBs of course keep the one that QBs and Coaches fear the most, keep Routt, like Nnamdi just took a couple years to mold, keep C. Johnson as he is a great tackling CB, and definately keep Mr. McFadden.

McFadden & Steveie Brown will not survive the waiver wire to place on our practice squad!

  461. RaiderRetribution Says:

Walter McFadden & Steveie Brown will not survive the waiver wire to place on our practice squad!

They must be on our 53-man roster!

If I remember correctly, Raiders cannot franchise tag Mr. Asomugha, it was part of the cb’s [qb] contract.

    That and they’ve earned it!

Perhaps one you semi-pro coaches who have already “broken tape” can help me out here..

There was a running play in the 1st. qtr. that D-Mac was tackled for a loss, I couldn’t make out whether it was a finger tip from a 9er, or a hash mark that brought him down…Thanks in advance..

Neither a Whiner finger, nor one of the has marks. He tripped on one of the offensive linemens lower legs. Look at the bright side: at least he didn’t fumble.

I don’t abuse children or women so I’ll go easy on you.

You have danced all over the issue at hand and changed your story as usual because you have no rational argument. hell you don’t even have a football team that you root for, at least publicly.

Fact is, the true assessment of this game is hoe the STARTERS played.

Now get your little VCR out, and rewind it and add up how many quarters the STARTERS for both teams played. I know you only have a pre school education, so I’ll be patient.

Over the course of 3 quarters(which is the entire length of time that the starters from both teams played) the Raiders outplayed your little team of sissies.

Yes Craptree, Gore, and Davis sat out alot. But so did Seymour, Nnamdi, Chris Johnson, and Chaz Schilens.

You are a mental midget who cannot defend her points with logic, so you jump all around the issues.

Tell us how long the majority of starters played for both teams and what the score was at the point when the starters for both teams left the game.

It’s basic math but I know it will probably take the rest of the week for you to figure it out.

  469. RaiderRetribution Says:

Whatever we do, do not sign Leinhart, should he get cut by the Cardinals.

  481. RaiderRetribution Says:

Raiders could be 2-2 or 3-1 going into week 5 playing San Diego at home.

As long as we beat the Chargers and we are at least 3-2 Raiders have a solid opportunity to win the AFC West.

  485. RaiderRetribution Says:

    Before bye-week [week 10], I see 4-5 must, should dominate victories: Rams (H), Cardinals (A), Broncos(A), Seahwks (H), Chiefs (H). [record 4-1/strong possibility of 5-0]

Most important game is versus the Chargers (H). [1-0]

Between Titans (A), Texans (H), and 49er’s (H [actually nontechnically speaking a home game]) are all winnable games. each of these opponents have weaknesses we could and should exploit. [1-2]

6-3 record is more than feasible going into our bye-week. I would much rather have beaten the Chargers than be 2-1 versus our toughest non-divisional opponents.

  486. JT Says:

Heres a good one for you.

Trade McFadden & Heyward Bay to the Chargers for Vicent Jackson.

  487. RaiderRetribution Says:

I see ten wins, since we have Colts (H) in week 16 [our 15th game], should the Colts be 13-1.12-2 and have their division won again, they could throw that game like they usually do, so even that game is winnable.

  488. RaiderRetribution Says:

We need to keep DHB at least one more year.

For those that remember old school Raiders’ football, it took Mr. Branch, (yes that one) a couple years to develop into a pro-bowl wide receiver.
