Cable Q&A
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, August 29th, 2010 at 7:30 pm in Oakland Raiders.
A transcript of Raiders coach Tom Cable’s conference call with Bay Area media Sunday evening, starting with injury updates:
Cable: (Chaz) Schilens with the knee, obviously, it’s going to be a three to six week issue for us. Satele will be ready to go back to work tomorrow. (Michael) Bush fractured his left thumb and will need a procedure on it, and whether or not that keeps him out remains to be seen.
Jason Campbell suffered a stinger, and after the X-rays, that does not appear to be too serious. We just need to rehab it and make sure he is ready to go. He also fell on his right wrist, and we’ll need to see more on that in the coming days. Chris Johnson will be able to go back to work. Thomas with a concussion, that will be day to day obviously. Desmond Bryant hyperextended an elbow and that will be a day-to-day issue as well. Richardson will not be ready to play on Thursday night. And Alex Daniels will probably not be ready to play on Thursday night.
Q: What is the bigger deal with Campbell, stinger or wrist?
Cable: Right now, I guess it’s the wrist.
Q: Did it happen on the same play?
Cable: It happened on the series before.
Q: Is there a chance Bush is back for the opener?
Cable: Yes, there is a good chance. There will be a procedure done tomorrow to repair it and then we will know more after that.
Q: How about Chaz for the opener?
Cable:I would say it’s questionable.
Q: Are you getting an MRI on Jason’s wrist?
Cable: We did all that today.
Q: Will Satele reclaim his starting job tomorrow?
Cable: I want to look at it. There were some things from last night’s game that I was not pleased with but there were also a lot of good things at the center position. I think the fact that Samson is ready to go is the most important thing right now.
Q: Did Gradkowski solidify his No. 2 status?
Cable: He definitely showed himself well and strengthened our football team at the quarterback position.
Q: But you’re not ready to say he is the backup?
Cable: Well, I think he is. I never said he wasn’t.
Q: Do you think the nature of camp practices resulted in poor tackling last night?
Cable: Oh no. No. No. We’re fine that way. That isn’t our issue.
Q: So, what is the issue with the tackling?
Cable: Well, I’d like to see us wrap up when we tackle. That was probably the biggest negative that took away from the game. I was very disappointed in our kick coverage teams. Those two things, we got to play better. And offensive tackle. Those three things, you can put your hand on those pretty clear.
Q: Is Mario Henderson’s job secure?
Cable: Well, everyone has got to continue to improve and all that. I don’t see any reason for him not to. My feeling on it right now is that he’s not unlike anybody else. He’s got to get better.
Q: Do you have a clue who your punt returner is going to be?
Cable: I felt like we were getting closer to that. I don’t know after last night that it’s any clearer than it was before but I’ve got an idea.
Q: Would Bush have to switch to carrying the ball in his right hand all the time if he needs a cast?
Cable: I don’t think it’s a cast issue, from what I’ve been told. It will certainly have to be protected, but I don’t believe it’s going to be a cast.
Q: Veldheer at center only this week or moving back and forth?
Cable: He’ll move back and forth.
Q: What did you think of Veldheer’s play?
Cable: I saw a guy playing center for the first time in this league. You got to learn where to put his helmet a little bit more consistently. When he did, it was pretty good stuff. So, there’s a lot to grow on. It was actually a pretty good effort by him.
Q: Considering you were 20-for-30 with five or six drops, does that many on-target passes indicate the timing of your passing game is well ahead of last year?
Cable: More important, the fact that we’ve had so many guys in and out, with Chaz out, Louis had a time out, Darrius had a time out. It bodes well for the direction we’re heading. It speaks volume for how far we’re ahead of where we’ve been in the past, no question. But, if you look at those drops, we still got to get our hands on third down. We were pretty good last week in Chicago , and then last night we dropped off again. So, there’s a direct correlation to us having success and how we are as a football team on third down. You can say the same thing on defense. We weren’t very good on third down last night.
Q: Is Reece blocking well enough to be considered a legitimate starting candidate?
Cable: Well, I’ll say this: He just continues to get better. That’s the thing that he’s shown us is that, from one week to the next he’s going out and improving on whatever his negatives were from the week before. It’s starting to show up more and more that this guy, you can coach him, he’ll take it and he’ll go get it again. I certainly think that he’s really showing himself the right way.
Q: His dimension as a receiver is something the other fullbacks really can’t offer . . .
Cable: That’s a true statement.
Q: How would you rate your receivers?
Cable: Well, I think there is some opportunity out there that we didn’t take advantage of, I mean a few drops. But I thought the group as a whole, would like to see more happen there at the end. We had a chance to really win the game even though there was just a little bit of time left and we didn’t get it done so… I think overall, I think the group is moving forward the right way. I’d just like to see a couple of more guys step up.
Q: Is there a need to add another receiver with Chaz out 3-6 weeks. Maybe Coles or Bryant?
Cable: We haven’t had any of those kind of discussions at this point. Right now, we’re more focused on our group and trying to find, really that fourth and fifth receiver. I think that’s really key for us right now.
Q: You said you’d know more about Thomas Howard after this game. What did you learn about him last night?
Cable: I thought the guy did some things better than he had in the two previous weeks. I think that in the right role, he can really help us, so we’ll see.
Q: Stanford Routt has been playing a lot — still a competitor with Chris Johnson as starter?
Cable: I don’t think there’s any question. I think Stanford has had a tremendous opportunity presented to him and, you know with the injury to Chris Johnson, Stanford has certainly taken the opportunity and done well with it.
Q: Tom, what did you see out of Darren McFadden last night?
Cable: I saw explosive play, I saw a guy run hard and in between the tackles. You know, it’s nice to get him back. You know it’s good for him to get his first action. I’ve said all along that when he’s healthy, I think he’s very important to what we’re trying to do.
Q: Talk about how Chris Cooper and Quentin Groves played last night.
Cable: You know, I think Chris Cooper is a consistent guy who shows up, you know does things right. Played the boot well a couple of times, rushed the passer well a couple of times, and disrupted the pocket. And Groves showed up a couple of times as a linebacker playing some pass defense, when rushing the passer, hurried the quarterback twice.

I think Henderson is the guy who Veldheer is going to replace.
Not sure if you guys have noticed Pears in WITH Henderson and Walker when Henderson is at LT. Went back to watch that Chicago game and they went with that a lot. Also saw it this past weekend where Walker or Pears is lining up next to Henderson instead of a second TE. They didn’t do that with Veldheer in the lineup.

I tell you what: Every aspect of this team has improved over last year except the O-line. How can Cable still have a job? He has two responsabilities: 1) coaching the Oline, 2) responding to press questions like a trained monkey. Get it together fat man!
August 29th, 2010 at 7:55 pm
Cable can only do so much with the line. The players still have to do their jobs.
We need some better players there, is all.
Watched Denver and the Steelers tonight; Maurkice Pouncey is a rookie center and he pretty much took 13 year veteran Jamaal Williams out of the game. You can’t fake talent in one-on-one battles.
August 29th, 2010 at 7:55 pm
C’mon DMC we need you baby, show us the magic……..please!!
I really like Marcel Reece that guy is a real weapon. If we could get DMC right this is a very different team his cahnge of pace is striking. It’s hard for a defense to adjust to heavy big back to a real speed guy from down to down very few defense have that ability. That’s why if he can stay healthy and give us that change of pace it makes us very dangerous.

The difference is Pouncey has been playing C for 3-4 years not months. That’s why it’ll take Veldheer much longer to be good there than at OT. It’s nt that he couldn’t eventually play there but why spend 2 years getting him up t speed when he can play OT right now.
August 29th, 2010 at 8:00 pm
Yeah, I think Cable has completely obliterated any cred he had as an offensive line guru.
August 29th, 2010 at 8:04 pm
One thing the Raiders did improve on this week is turnovers.
Now we gotta eliminate the stupid penalties, we already get flagged for nothing.
I already miss Ike on special teams.
August 29th, 2010 at 8:04 pm
Oh, I agree with you, Priest. That’s why our first-rounder was such a tough choice this year. I know you thought I was crazy for wanting Pouncey in the first, but as you know the middle of both sides of the ball is hugely important. I’m thrilled we got McClain, but watching Pouncey dominate Williams tonight (heck, even Aikman was talking about it) made me wish we could have had them both.

And its this philisophical difference that leads to Raider draft picks taking LOOOOONGER to develop than others.
We throw so much at these young guys…switch them around the field and with Veldheer…what they are doing with him is nothing short of remarkable.
Take a Division III Left Tackle and convert him to a starting Center in 3 months….Absolutely remarkable
August 29th, 2010 at 8:12 pm
JFB,
You got your wish. You and others said Gradkowski is the better QB.
I hope you are right. We are asking him to do something he’s only been able to do in one 4th QTR against a Palomalouless Steelers and a preseason game…that’s complete 60% of his passes, limit turnovers and lead to points.
Is that a trend or an anomaly?
Gradkowski is up! I hope he’s a Tom Brady or Kurt Warner…….otherwise this is a lost season.
August 29th, 2010 at 8:15 pm
Having Bush at less than 100% with the season 2 weeks ago is concerning and a definite dampener. Bush has proved that he is our best back.
Anything that we can get from Mcfadden is a plus at this point, but I just can’t count on him yet.
I really have liked what Bennett has done in the preseason and would vote for him to be our Bush replacement until Bush is healthy again.
The injury to Campbell’s wrist is really concerning. I am afraid it may be more serious than Cable is saying right now.
August 29th, 2010 at 8:18 pm
reece is getting better as a blocker so i think he will stay. there is no way u keep lawton and not him. marcel brings speed and elusiveness as a fb. he allows us to screen from both hb/fb postions as well as getting downfield. that pass he caught in the 1rst wouldve been a td had jc led him to the endzone more. how many teams can do that with a fb? teams cant just sit on bush/dmc getting paases with him on the field. they have to account for him as well.

ArmChair GM,
Everytime the Raiders have injuries its usually worse than is let on. 2 to 4 weeks turns into 10 to 12 weeks.
Gradkowski and DMAC have to step up to the plate and play at a high level

The cause of the injury is the Coaching of the Offensive Line.
We might be replacing a QB, but we aren’t addressing the cause of the problem….
We’re addressing the symptom.
Like I have been saying objectively since the day we let Fargas go, the day we allowed Morrison to be traded, and the day of the draft…

Look at the 3rd and 16 completion to DHB. Threaded the needle and went for it. None of these checkdowns on 3rd and 8 that we saw quite a bit of from Campbell.

I think people are jumping the gun a bit with these QB comparisons. While I’ll be the first to congradulate Grads he played a great game. I think I was more impressed with his accuracy than anything. He hadn’t shown me that and it was sorely needed at that time. Campbell was great as well but he hasn’t had the advantage of being with this team for well over a year. Neither has Boller. I really think we have a great problem at QB for the first time in many years. Let it play itself out they’ve all been impressive IMO.
Marcel Reece is a real weapon at FB not many FB’s have that kind movement skills as well as recieving. He isplaying some great ball right now an he’ll only get much better.
Carlisle leaves a lot to be desired if a change on the line is needed I think it is there primarily he gets no push on running downs. We can’t even run to that side with any degree of proficiency. Cable needs to start Campbell IMO I think the returns on Carlisle are deminishing. His savy is n longer an asset.
While most would like to see Veldheer at C I think if Mario continues to struggle at times I wouldn’t mind seeing Veldheer get a long look at LT. Move Mario to RT Campbell at RG and leave Satele at C.
They have to run blck much better than they are doing and Cable has got to get that fixed. We can’t run to the right. We run really well going left.
I know most are concerned about the sacks buit sacks are a part of the game you’re going to give up sacks I don’t care who’s playing LT. So asking for zero sacks is a little naive. We have given up a minimum this preaseason the line in terms of sacks given up looks good it’s the lack of a consistent running game that’s got me concerned.

I am not expecting Bush or Campbell for the 1st 4 wks. After the Schilens and Nick Miller debacles last year..I tack on 6 to 8 wks to anything Cable says in a press conference.

I keep saying that if we solidify the line we win the division. Getting receivers and QB’s are important, but we won’t be able to get the most benefit from them until we fix that freakin line!

He and Hue Jackson also better realize that opponents will be game planning him too.
August 29th, 2010 at 8:31 pm
Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe Bruce took all of ZERO sacks yesterday.
Yes the O-line is poorous, but better a QB who realizes it and plays the hand he is dealt. Campbell must have watched too many 1970 Raider highlight films with Al, he almost got killed the last 3 weeks taking sacks.
August 29th, 2010 at 8:33 pm
BTW, my man Bruce, shredded both his knees AND KEPT PLAYING until halftime.

August 29th, 2010 at 8:33 pm
JFB,
Raiders call a lot of 5 and 7 step drops….which is what got Campbell nearly decapitated.
Regardless, if Bruce can do it….they will have his story up there with Kurt Warner and Tom Brady.
How were we so smart and the others around the league so dumb?
August 29th, 2010 at 8:34 pm
Priest,
you are correct that even the best LT will give up a sack every now and then.
But to me there’s a difference between giving up a sack, and letting your QB get hauled off on blindsided.
The LT is like the QB’s personal bodyguard. He puts his body on the line to protect his QB’s blind side.
Mario let the team down big time on that play IMO.

Keep a eye out for a trade to Pittsburg to pickup Hartwig – center. He was the starter but looks like he’s getting bounced for Maurike Pouncey, their # 1 pick this year. Hartwihg has a 4 year $2M+ contract. That’s a little expensive to be sitting on the bench. Fortunately for us, AD doesn’t get scared by the $’s. If we got Hartwig then we could focus both Veldheer & BCampbell on the tackle positions. We could then move Walker or MHenderson to RG. That would give us a reasonable dominating O-Line.

Well, it is a Davis and Cable flaw.

I thought he could do it too and maybe he can. But he let me down yesterday. Damn

Now that JCampbell is out for awhile, we should be seeing Boller & Brennan next week. Should be entertaining.
August 29th, 2010 at 8:44 pm
Pittsburgh drafted Pouncey because they’re smart. Hartwig is in his 9th year in the league and it has long been the Steelers’ policy to draft a guy’s replacement two or three years before they need to replace him. Gives the new player time to adjust to the team and the system. Pouncey is just really good, is all, which is why he’s already starting.
Pouncey was rated coming out of college as one of the best center prospects in years (even higher than Manglod). It’s not a fluke that he’s beaten out Hartwig, but it doesn’t by any means indicate that Hartwig can’t play anymore.
August 29th, 2010 at 8:45 pm

Amazing how fast things change isn’t it.
I hope for once the Raiders are telling the truth as it relates to injuries.
I also hope they don’t RUSH players back before they are ready.

Then the Raiders should have that 3rd round pick on speed dial to send to Pittsburgh before Miami does something.
Someday, the Raiders will be equally as saavy getting young players that can play right away!
August 29th, 2010 at 8:47 pm
Here’s what I saw yesterday.
For the first time in a few years we can actually have an intelligent debate about who our starting QB should be.
Campbell seems more relaxed and poised in the pocket. And he throws a beautiful spiral. Sometimes he seems a little too relaxed because he doesn’t realize that our line will get him killed if he doesn’t get the ball outta there quicker. But that opening drive yesterday was a thing of beauty. he was calm, collected, and has a good command of the huddle.
Gradkowski doesn’t throw as pretty a pass, or as deep as Campbell, but several things stood out to me.
1) His energy. Right after Campbell went out, the Raiders looked completely deflated. You could see their body language. But Grads came on the field with a ball of energy and electrified the whole Coliseum! Diving in the Black Hole, lol.
2) Man was he accurate last night. I mean on a couple of drives he was looking like the second coming of Drew Brees, lol. The way he threaded that pass to DHB in between 2 or 3 defenders was a thing of beauty.
3) He moves around the pocket when it starts collapsing and makes plays to keep the chains moving. He knows the team and the players better than Campbell at this point, and remembers his injuries last year, so he knows not to get too comfortable in the pocket behind that line.
I’m a little nervous with Campbell going out, but Grads lit up the Coliseum last night. Gotta give that man his props.

Would have been happy with Alex Mack 2 years ago instead of DHB.

Nah. The other Satele is in Miami and goes by the name of Jake Grove.
Seriously, Pouncey aside from being a great prospect is 21 YO. Justin Hatwig is 31 YO with 9 years experience. They are making the change to keep their line younger for the long run.
We could use Hartwig this & next year and maybe pick up Pouncey’s brother in next year’s draft. We may have to move up a bit to get him though. Wiznewski’s nephew will be long gone before our turn comes. Those 2 are the top two rated center in the upcoming draft.

I hear you, SnB. On the other hand, Pouncey’s twin brother Mike, who started at guard next to his brother last year, is now the Gators’ starting center and is highest-ranked at that position in the country this year. Bigger and stronger than Wiz’ kid, and without the injury history of O’Dowd from USC. He’s a senior and will be available in next year’s draft.

I’m getting sick of Raider fans who still dont appreciate Bruce Grad. All he has done is make plays and deliver for us. What more can the guy do? For most of the opportunity he has been given, he has delivered. Bruce played with the same group of players that Jawalrus played with yet you got people still bashing him last yr. He played with the same players that JC played with and he did in 2 quarters what JC couldnt do in 4.
The guy makes things happen. He is another version of Jeff Garcia. Jeff Garcia was good enough in his prime to take the Whiners to the Playoffs and a few probowls. Bruce aint no Drew Brees or Peyton but he is more than competent to give us at least a 9-7 season this year.

Maybe 1 and 1a, JB. I’ve read stuff that has Pouncey rated higher, but I guess that just means they’re both good:)
I suppose I like Pouncey better for two reasons; 1) He’s bigger and stronger than Wiz, and wih all of the teams in our division running a 3-4, we need the biggest one we can get, all things being equal. 2) He plays week-in and week-out against the best competiton in the country, and by the time his career at Florida is over will have played in (and won) a ton of big games. The last part is an intangible, but in my mind an important one.

Cable has to start making some tough management decisions soon. He must identify and correct our defensive weakness against the long runs that occurred 2 weeks in a row. He must also correct the very weak special teams play that allows runbacks and fails to gain punt and kickoff return yardage. He really should consider replacing the Special teams coach, John Fassel. A coach that fails to properly utilize all the talent at his disposal, should be replaced with someone who can. John must be one terrible coach with the results he is getting. Then we got this kid that was a great running back at the college level that can’t get it done at the pro level. Maybe a good manager might recognize that McFadden is fast natural receiver and change his job description to Wide Receiver. We have a few backup running backs that run far better than McFadden. It might not be too late to find someway to improve our O-Line before we lose all our quarterbacks. Cable is supposed to know a little bit about O-line so I hope he has a plan and executes it. He should also consider cutting those great players that can’t seem to stay healthy. Some people just break too easy and just don’t belong on a football field, no matter how good they play wide receiver, on those few days they are healthy. See ya.

************************
No argument here. I say get Hartwig if we can for the next two years at starting C. Draft Mike Pouncey (my favorite also) and give him a year to grow & learn the NFL and he starts as center in 2012. Now that’s a plan that fixes now and takes care of tomorrow.

How were we so smart and the others around the league so dumb?

If Campbell succeeds, you could say the same thing.
A 4th round pick in 2012 isn’t exactly much of a market for your services.
August 29th, 2010 at 9:10 pm
Agreed, JB. The upside on Pouncey is that he can play guard as well, so it gives us some flexibility there.
Which means that we’ll probably put Veldheer at center and Pouncey at tackle… lol

Before we continue beating each other up over which player (QB) has the biggest Johnson we should give thanks to the following:
• JaLoser is no longer here and
• We probably have the best 3 & maybe 4 QB’s, as a group of any other NFL team.
JCampbell has played well. So has Gradkowski. Boller has had his moments too. All that is left is to see what Brannen can do. This is a great problem to have. Whether we paid a 4th round pick or something else is irrelevant at this point in time. There are teams out here that would love to have our QB problem. In this league if you don’t have a good #2 & #3 QB, you don’t survive to the end.

I think some earlier suggested that DMac’s skills could best be used at sprinting for the kicking tee & bringing it back. There was also concern expressed that he might fumble it too so maybe that wasn’t the best idea.

Even if he plays he will not be 100% and Mcmuffin hasn’t shown us anything remotely close to proving that he is at the level of an effective, starting, every down, RB in this league.

Bennett and/or Cartwright are better choices for that. DMac showed last night that he’s not an NFL caliber RB. He has no moves and no change of pace. He’s great at running into whatever is in front of him. The problem is he doesn’t go through, just falls down. We can do better than that.

IMO, it would make any difference. DMac has no moves and no change of pace. He’s a straight line runner. He couldn’t get through a tired between the tackles group and running around the edge requires moves & change of pace which are NOT in his skill set.
I know you want him to be something I do not believe he’s capable of. He simply goes down too easily for any number of reasons. It’s been that way since he got here and it hasn’t changed. Soon, everyone will agree and then maybe we can move on.

August 29th, 2010 at 10:31 pm
Unfortunately, McFadden’s game is better suited to the one-cut running style that the ZBS requires and that we ran full-time when he was drafted.
In that system he needed to just pick a hole and use his speed to take it as far as he could.
We are mixing up things upfront now and while the ZBS may not be abandoned, nowadays every team has some zone blocking in their playbook, it appears we’re getting shifting to more conventional schemes and that does not bode well for DMAC.

I’m very happy with the McClain pick, and I don’t want to change it.

3- OT/ A Mack/ Orakpo/ J Maclin (09)

Before that draft, John Madden said we should take an offensive tackle in the first round.
We picked DMAC.
August 29th, 2010 at 10:41 pm
I really hope Hue Jackson finds a way to keep him involved.
IMO, we should see more Bush-McFadden backfields, we can split McFadden out or send him in motion and throw the ball while Bush stays to block, or we could run it with Bush if the defense sends a LB or a S out to cover McFadden, we could also have both of them run a short route…
You get the picture, we should have a specific formation with both on the field and a special set of plays designed to take advantage of two talented backs.
August 29th, 2010 at 10:43 pm
I forgot about clady, we probably could have taken Clausen this year and I’d only replace McClain if we go Willis.

The draft by in large is such a crapshoot. My opinion is I want to play out this season before I decide what we need to do in next years draft. Everyone is assuming what will happen this year and we haven’t played game one yet. By years end you may feel very different about what we need to do.
That includes everything along the lines I wonder what we’d be saying if our line had given up 7 sacks in on preseason game like we did to the Cowboy’s. I’ll submit to that the Steelers line is expecially at the OT is very leaky. These problems we’re discussing exist on most teams. This is the NFL sacks happen with the multiple blitz packages that defenses run you are going to give up sacks……….period
It’s unforttunate that Campbell got hurt but this is a very violent sport players get hurt that’s what happens. You can’t run and panic because of it. Gradkowski will get sacked, Farve will get sacked,Peyton Manning will get sacked it happens. You can’t play this game in a bubble.
And we’re jumping the gun on Campbell’s injury who says he’ll miss the opener certainly not a doctor or a coach and not Campbell. I just think everybody needs to take a deep breath and look at this thing realistically. I love what Jason Campbell brings to the table and still feel strongly that he is the best QB for this team…………..period
If not the season willl let me know I’m wrong not some preseason game where Grads looked like Unitas for a quarter or two. I like him as a backup but I also like Boller. This game will get a lot tougher in 2 weeks from that point on time will tell all.

You hit the nail right on the head Marley. I see some people talking about the Niners beating the Raiders up.
But don’t forget last years Monday Night opener vs the Dischargers.
We beat the mess out of them physically in that game. We injured a couple of their players and sacked Rivers a few times as well. But after all of that, we lost all the same.
The bottom line, like you said is that the Whiners offense only scored ten points against our starting D, while we put up 21 against there predominantly starting defense.
That’s what matters, when you look at the overall picture. Like I said earlier, it’s about winning the WAR, not every single little battle.
The Raiders all time record vs the Whiners is 6-5. So we can definitively say that we’re winning the war.

Every team in the league uses 7 step drops and we use them all 3 5 and 7 it just depends on the playcall. The 1st drive of the game he was using 7 step drops.Grads used 7 step drops there is nothing inherently wrong with a 7 step drop. If you get rid of the ball on time it’s when you’re forced to hold it on any depth drop that gets you in trouble.

11+11=22. Take your time now, I know that’s over your head.
So a majority would mean MORE THAN HALF. So all that means is that at least 6 players from each team would have to be starters in the 3rd quarter.

Now you run that weak “I said majority”?? YOU WHINE ABOUT HOW EVERYONE SHOULD VIEW THE END OF THE 3RD QUARTER?
And now you state “oh..uh..duh..I..uh…meant..you know…”majority”..more than “half” the team?
You fool, lol.
Now, while I laugh at you for that sorry juvenile whine, for fun, let’s complete your slap down.
Dixon..NOT A STARTER
Carr..NOT A STARTER
Grant..NOT A STARTER
Hill.. NOT A STARTER
Simms.. NOT A STARTER
Ginn.. NOT A STARTER
Zeigler.. NOT A STARTER
Walker.. NOT A STARTER..that’s 8 of the 11 guys, on offense, who are NOT STARTERS, on the field at the start of the 3rd quarter…ALONG WITH FG kicker, Andrews..NOT A STARTER
Now..do you feel as “slow” as you look?
Seriously..changing your name didn’t help, did it?
Now, let’s just say that it was ONLY the QB, the LT, both WR’s, AND the RB that were in as backups..according to you, you would still state ‘WAS THE STARTERS AGAINST THE STARTERS”?? fool…like before..the MOTLEY FOOL.
Yep, continuing to LMFAO ..at you…again….still.

That’s why I and several others are stressing that yesterday’s final score means nothing. The schemes and the play calling should be mostly vanilla at this time of year.
LMFAO..first you run the “WHAT REALLY MATTERS IS THE SCORE AT THE END OF THE 3RD QUARTER..THAT’S WHAT WE HAVE TO LOOK AT..BECAUSE IT WAS STARTERS AGAINST STARTERS”..
Until I school you like a little child, and now you state “Oh..uh..me…AND OTHERS..are stressing the FINAL score meant nothing.”
Then why should the end of the 3rd qtr. score mean something?
You’re not bright enough to avoid contradicting yourself..are you?
It doesn’t matter who’s ahead on ANY OF THE QUARTERS.
That’s not what preseason is about.

it’s not like jc is a pro bowl caliber qb, he was another teams castoff. they thought so little of him they practically gave him away, and that was shanahan. what intangilbes does he bring to the table. if the line breaks down with one of those seven step drops, what’s he going to do? grads is gritty and commands respect from that offense. henderson needs to be told to stay in the game, we all know he needs to focus and grads does that. sharp, accurate and ready to run if needs be. this guy is gannon like and probably that is why al doesn’t like him.

Good Morning Bo, Bcz24….
Yes, there were still concerns…but take away that dumb Gore run, the punt return (that our guy was dragged to the ground and not called)and the goal line stand (keep watching the replay and I keep getting it at runner was pushed back, even though all teams would have punched it in on 4th down from the 2 inch line)…
I say it wasn’t that bad…
Heard that Singletary had a fit after because of communication problems???
August 30th, 2010 at 6:32 am
I was surprised (from the limited exposure that I had to the the game) the the 9ers were blitzing us on almost every play?! I still think we HAVE to be questioning Henderson. You would think JC owed him money the way he let Laboy get after it!

I’m loving this Jared Veldheer kid, keep in mind this a guy coming from Division II football, (Hillsdale College, 1300 students), and he managed to held his own vs an All-Pro Caliber DE in Julius Peppers last week (ok, he was abused on a couple of plays, but Peppers will do that to anyone) and on saturday, he proved he can play Center in this league, he should only get better and that will allow us to upgrade LT or C, the 2 most important positions on the line.
August 30th, 2010 at 6:54 am
we already had 5 guys out against the 49ers …
Schilens, Richardson, Satele, CJ37 & Seymour
* not including Frye & Holland – IR *
now 4 more guys are hurt ???
Campbell, Bush, Bryant & Thomas
I guess thats what happens when you play against a PHYSICAL football team
August 30th, 2010 at 6:58 am
Right now, we’re more focused on our group and trying to find, really that fourth and fifth receiver. I think that’s really key for us right now.
-Tom Cable
***
so with Chaz out we already have a “Top 3″
Heyward-Bey, Murphy & Higgins
4th & 5th WR’s Cable is looking for will be a heated competition between Ford, Watkins, Figurs & NMiller … Ford & Watkins the odds on favorites (Ford was a 4th rounder & Watkins has been here 2 years already. has that typical Raider size & speed)

DHB actually did really well Saturday night, especially in that first drive! Yes, he had a dropped pass, but also on the sideline that Bruce Almighty perfectly threaded into him where only him can catch it and he did! And really??? Did you call the whiners a physical team? I don’t care who their coach is…they are not even close to the 9ers of Steve Young, and others from the 90’s…(although yes, I think Singletary has done a great job there)
August 30th, 2010 at 7:12 am
Good Morning Rockstar, Marley, Theco7!!!
August 30th, 2010 at 7:18 am
We faced a good team on sat. the 9ers will win the NFC west… They were blitzing a lot which is good for us to see early on, and especially good for our rookie center. Veldheer was a find and should start somewhere on the oline. I havent seen a pocket during pass plays in a while. JC and Grads both had time to step up and throw.
From this game you could draw a lot of positives. You can also use the negatives and learn from them, thus turning those into positives.
After JC went down, the team was in disarray, Grads was able to right the ship, as I said before he was one of a handful of stand up guys on this team, we are fortunate to have him.
My two biggest concers, the Oline, and special teams had issues. Oline has enough moving parts to be decent.
The rookies will supplant the vets before game 4. They should play where we could benifit from them the most.
Veldheer seems like he could play all 5 line positions. If satele comes back start Veldheer somewhere on the line.
Special teams I had a concern, we need to settle on KOR/PR dutites. I am glad we made the errors on return coverage now so that we can make the adjusments. Considering we have had a turnover in talent this we need to indentify who’s who…
We still have issues as this is a young team, but all is not lost…
August 30th, 2010 at 7:24 am
hwnrdr, Aloha Bro…
August 30th, 2010 at 7:28 am
The 9ers will win the West only because everyone has dropped off. AZ was already off consideration when Kurt Warner wisely retired, and they lost Karlos Dansby and Anquan…Seattle I will give another 2 years, and the Rams is a mess!!! If the 9ers DON’T win the West, then…well…
I think we are about a year or two away from really being something great, but I think we will at least hit .500! As long as everyone stays healthy…
August 30th, 2010 at 7:30 am
Saw the game last night.
1) McFadden never stood a chance with 49ers standing right there when he got the handoff;
2) Our o-line can’t run block;
3) Cooper Carlisle has the mange…he has strange bald spots and streaks in his hair…he needs to be put down;
4) Our special teams coach need to be fired RIGHT NOW. Outside of our kickers our special teams were awful last year and they look even worse this season;
5) I know Seymour didn’t play, but John Henderson needs to see more time on running downs…the middle of the d-line was dominated by an o-line playing with two rookies and Barry Simms;
6) Samjay Lal needs to be fired immediately as well, our receivers drop way too many balls…DHB is still trying to catch passes with his belly button;
7) McClain needs a ton of work, he looked lost out there;
9) Mario Henderson is not getting better;
10) Langston Walker….damn dude, block someone instead of running along side the defender and watching them sack the QB.
Yikes!

I am not too worried about Campbell’s wrist injury….watching him on the sideline last night (after seeing the breaking news about his wrist scroll bye) I saw him gesturing with his right hand and he didn’t look like he was in pain, he was gesturing to his chest and shoulder area and wasn’t pointing out his wrist or anything. Did see the play where he injured his wrist, he stood up after the play and shook his hand a couple of times…then went on to play.
Hopefully just a sprain.
The Bush injury sucks. Surgery today…hope he can make it back soon.

Priest,
I have to respectfully disagree with you when you say it’s too early to begin talking about who we need in next year’s draft. I’t been painfully obvious over the last few years that our o-line isn’t getting the job done. We may need to draft for depth at some other positions next year, but the o-line needs to be addressed early and shoould be the priority. We need to get another couple of guys in here that can play, get them up to speed and get them on the field. I like what I’ve seen from Veldheer and Campbell so far, but they alone aren’t enough to fix what’s ailin’ us.

Rockstar,
I can see the apathy about the Rams. Short history there and they’ve sucked to high heaven since that Super Bowl, but I thought the Chiefs had better fans than that.
Easier to be an OU fan though, for sure. My mom’s folks are from there and I was indoctrinated early.
August 30th, 2010 at 8:00 am
I would keep both Bennett and Rock.Have Reece as my starting FB and Rock as the back-up.
I think our 2 starting RB’s are too brittle to last 16 games.

Rockstar,
I think it’s very premature and not very intelligent to pass judgement on a new offensive coordinator after three preseason games. Jackson isn’t gameplanning for anybody right now. He’s running things that he wants to see in game situations to see how certain players execute them, to work on timing and to evaluate packages in real-time. We haven’t seen real sequences, we haven’t seen the whole playbook, and we haven’t seen all the personnel groupings that we’ll see in the regular season. It’s also his first year, and while some of the playbook is the same, some of it isn’t and everybody’s adapting to that. Besides, I would say from watching all of this that the problems we’re having so far stem more from players not executing than the wrong plays being called.

You’re right about the wasted time. I think our semi pro circle settled on Henderson-Gallery-Satele-Walker-Barnes as a starting 5 before the draft. With the obvious weaknesses being OT.
We drafted 2 OTs and instead of putting them at LT and RT IMMEDIATELY, here we are a week before the season still with the coach saying OT is one of the top concerns.

August 30th, 2010 at 8:25 am
Rockstar,
I think it’s too early to tell. Folks get all excited and start analyzing stuff sometimes without looking at the big picture. Take the Dmac situation, for example. There were people in here calling for Hue Jackson’s head because he was running Dmac between the tackles, when it should have been clear that Jackson said before the game that he had yet to see the man play in his offense in a game situation and wanted to get him a number of different looks so he could see what he had and what he didn’t. Take that situation and multiply it by however many other guys he’s evaluating, plus identifying stuff from the playbook that he likes with our guys and stuff he doesn’t, and maybe it makes sense to wait until we’re actually playing the games to win.

August 30th, 2010 at 8:51 am
Throw all the small-school talk out the door. Niners left guard Mike Iupati is as NFL-ready as any rookie offensive lineman in the league.
Just ask Raiders coach Tom Cable, who went out of his way to congratulate Iupati after the 49ers’ 28-24 victory over the Raiders in Saturday night’s exhibition game at the Coliseum.
“He’s going to be a good one,” said Cable, a former Idaho offensive lineman, just like Iupati.
Pro Bowl running back Frank Gore agrees, citing the monstrous hole Iupati forged on his 49-yard carry up the middle on his first touch of the preseason.
Iupati chip blocked a defensive tackle, charged upfield and wiped a linebacker out of the way as Gore sprinted up and away.
It’s the sort of hit-and-run combination of strength at the line of scrimmage and speed downfield that’s allowing Iupati, all 331 pounds of him, to make the instant transition into the NFL.
So much for the notion No. 17 overall is too high a spot to draft a guard.
“It’s getting a lot better,” Iupati said. “From when I first got out here, I didn’t even look like a football player.”
So, what advice did Cable give Iupati after their postgame man-hug?
“He said to work hard. It’s going to be a long season, so take care of your body,” Iupati said. “I really like the guy.”

Iupati also got away with some pretty blatant holds in that game. He got called for a couple in their previous game, and Singletary actually got in his face on the sideline after one play where he was holding and didn’t get called for it. They had Singletary miked up for the game; “You need to stop holding out there.”

Sometimes I wonder what you guys watch. Rob Gallery is a dominant NFL lineman. The reason he didn’t go to the pro bowl is because our team sucked. How many Detroit and St. Louis linemen went to the pro bowl? Notice that in both the preseason and last season our offense moves when he is in there. When he isn’t, we don’t go anywhere.

August 30th, 2010 at 9:06 am
Watching that Niner game really opened my eyes to how far behind our lines are. Somehow, the Raiders’ redzone defense is always stout and their wheel routes and screens kept the offense moving; but both of the lines were completely outclassed out there Saturday night. The D-line was just painful to watch, especially early on against the Niner starters, they were overwhelmed, a sea of white, red and brown would completely overtake them on every dam running play. Then our offense would take the field and get absolutely no push running the ball. The protection was decent on average, but they were constantly allowing Willis and LaBoy to get into the backfield untouched all night. Veldheer still has a lot to learn about playing Center and Henderson is NOT a starting-caliber left tackle.

Gallery is a dominant NFL lineman?
LMAO
Funny stuff. After failing at both tackle positions he has been an okay LG. Dominant is stretching it quite a bit. Steve Wisniewski was a dominant NFL lineman….Gallery is no such thing.
Wisniewski didn’t play on a lot of great Raider teams, but he managed to make the pro bowl 8 times.
August 30th, 2010 at 9:12 am
Every game that we play with McFadden as our primary back, will not be pretty. This O-line will get him killed…
August 30th, 2010 at 9:13 am
it’s hard to evaluate talent in a soft, learning intensive camp. especially with the linemen
Henderson-Gallery-Satele-Carlisle-Walker
vs.
Shaughnessy-Seymour-Kelly-Houston
might be REALLY good in camp, with one unit besting the other every 2nd & 4th snap
then when we face an actual NFL team with real linemen and we need to tackle guys to the ground it doesn’t work out so well
August 30th, 2010 at 9:13 am
Our Dline rotation will be fine with Henderson moving up to no less than #3 in to rotation.
August 30th, 2010 at 9:14 am

Pay and give him a LT contract. We need him!

Exactly.
Gallery will have some dominant plays during the game, but will offset those with missed blocks (or unexpected hand offs if you like that better) or stupid penalties.
Dominant????
Hilarious stuff!

The Raiders have plans to make something of Veldheer. Cable was geeked when he found out he was still available in the 3rd round! He is a talented kid and has potential in pretty much anything you plug him in!
August 30th, 2010 at 9:20 am
Since Seymour didn’t play I don’t think it is time to panic about the run D yet.
I am more concerned with McClain being out of position several times and other times not being able to shed blocks and with Huff being unable to tackle to stop the big plays.
I wish our base defense consisted of a d-line of:
RDE: Matt S./Houston
DT: Kelly
NT: Henderson
LDE: Seymour
with Mitchell in at FS or SS and Huff on the bench
and then on obvious passing downs:
RDE: Matt S.
DT: Seymour
NT: Kelly
LDE: Houston
with Huff back on the field
August 30th, 2010 at 9:20 am

Q. Coach Cable, are you here right now?
Cable. Well, I can tell you that I see this as an opportunity for me to get better, you know, to push through that and to continue to work towards that.
Q. Uh, what? So, you ARE here?
Cable. I didn’t say that. We’ll just continue to look at it and continue to work on that.
Q. (gun to head)…is your name Tom Cable?
Cable. That hasn’t been determined yet. We’ll go back, look at the film, continue to work on it and continue to push to where we want to get to.

August 30th, 2010 at 9:28 am
Gallery is our best lineman, but that does not a pro-bowler make; he is better than the worst rated O-lineman in the entire league (Henderson). He is better than the revolving cast of misfits at pivot (Groves, Satele, Morris, Veldheer. He is better than the “washed up 3 years ago but he still manages to start for us…” (Cooper Carlisle), and he may be better than Langston Walker, but he is certainly better than the wife beating Cornbread Green.
August 30th, 2010 at 9:32 am
Disagree with your lineup Dakota.
Running Downs
LDE Seymour/Houston
DT Kelly Henderson
RDE Shaugnessy/Houston
Passing Downs
RDE Wimbley
LDE Scott
DTs Kelly Seymour
Oh, and Trevor Scott SUCKS as a WLB. Thomas Howard needs to play that spot!

The plays that really bothered me from the game (other than the two times McFadden was handed the ball and a 49er was unblocked to greet him) was the time Walker was playing LT and was spinning in circles looking for someone to block and then running along side the 49 to the QB instead of blocking the guy….get your friggin eyes checked!
Then the play where McClain ran all the way around the right side of the d-line while the RB went right up the middle and McClain’s body language was even saying “Oh sheet, I messed that up!”
lol

Were more talented than the Colts or the Saints but with those qb’s they can score every possesion so the D is fresh, can take risks, and only has to stop you a couple times a game. Our O with guys like Campbell Reece, DMAC, Bush, DHB, Murphy, Miller is young, talented and full of hard workers so they can get to that point. Our D at full strength will be top flight. Now if only Cable could coach up that OL….
August 30th, 2010 at 9:52 am
Watching the replay in parts right now.
Man that John Henderson is pretty dang good against the run, and pretty damn worthless rushing the passer.
As one dimensional as it gets!!
August 30th, 2010 at 9:52 am
When other teams start talking about Gallery, then I will believe the hype. As it stands he’s a 2nd overall pick that gets called for offsides and holding as much as the 6 rounders. He’s a bust, he is no Wisnewski, not even close to Minnesota’s Hutch, the best in the game.
August 30th, 2010 at 9:53 am
I don’t know about being more talented than the Saints or the Colts. Maybe the Colts minus the QB but the Saints are a pretty talented team and are more similar to our players except Drew Breeze is the best baby, he makes that ship go! Now the Colts do a way better job of executing then we do right now. Both of these teams the talent shows up on film.

August 30th, 2010 at 10:00 am
The Walker play when Campbell hurt his wrist? Reece enganged a LB, and Walker decided to observe that engagement instead of blocking the DE who demolished the QB. Reminded me of the Youtube college guard that stood still during a whole play.

Sam Williams must have made at least 3 special teams tackles , including hammering a guy once.
Can’t imagine him getting cut.
August 30th, 2010 at 10:07 am
Frank Gore dominated the Raiders on back-to-back plays, then the took him out.
V Davis didn’t play.
Crabtree didn’t play.
SF missed a field goal and didn’t make it on 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1 with Gore on the sidelines.
I felt really good after the first two games, but SF is a much better team on D and rushing O then the Raiders have seen so far.
It was definately a step back this weekend. Chris Johnson just needs to watch the Frank Gore plays and the Forte run to learn all he needs to learn about the Raiders run D.
The same concerns from the last 7 years are still there. OL and run D.
I did like how good the Raiders red zone O looks and their passing game.
I hope the reason the Raiders didn’t look good after the great opening drive, is they went vanilla since they play them again. The Seattle game may be the same thing.

Another big difference, other than the QBs, between the Saints/Colts and the Raiders is coaching. They have good coaching staffs, we have:
Tom Cable who is only qualified to coach an o-line…
Sanjay Lal who seems to be teaching DHB to try and catch with his belly button or nipples…
Marshall, who generally has a horrible run D…
Fassell who took a very good special teams unit and turned it into a very bad special teams unit…

the blueprint to beat the Raider is simple – same as last year …
run the ball & stop the run
Raye bested Marshall on Saturday. on doubt he watched our first 2 preseason games and saw us trashing QB’s left & right, then saw Forte’s long TD run.
so the Raiders wanted to attack the QB and the 49ers ran the ball down our throats instead. we went on our heels and then they were able to run or pass at will
memories of the past 7 seasons run rampant in my mind
if you’re soft in the middle of both lines, you simply aren’t going to win many football games – period

Doubt they flip flop this late in the pre but you never know. Hendu’s never played RT that I know of but seriously, can’t think of very many LT’s who can contain a speedy LB like LaBoy every time without help.
B Campbell runs hot and cold. Needs technique especially in protection. Occasionally gets beat off ball, pads not low enough, gets on skates and can’t anchor. Walked right back into the QB.
Other times he locks on and dominates.
Saw him pull the other night and it was impressive.
He could be good, but it’ll take more than one pre season.

____________
McClain could be the second coming of Ray Lewis, but as long as the opponent’s oline can release a guard to put a helmet on him we are not going to stop the run. I saw two plays where the DTs (Kelly and Bryant I think) were handled with single coverage and McClain was then sent packing by who I thought was Iupati or whatever his name is…
McClain doesn’t shed blocks well (sound familiar?) so it is critical that the DTs occupy the interior o-line and force the opponent to try and block McClain with a FB. Hopefully that will be the case with Henderson getting more playing time or with Seymour demanding more respect than Kelly or Bryant.

Huff did have a nice shoulder block on Gore, but he launched him into a flailing Route who helped Gore keep his balance.
The next play (I think) had Route blitz only to have Gore run right up the middle. Route could have at least tried to trip him up from behind but he missed.

B Campbell runs hot and cold. Needs technique especially in protection. Occasionally gets beat off ball, pads not low enough, gets on skates and can’t anchor. Walked right back into the QB.

#66 is Carlisle not Bruce Campbell.

I don’t even know what you’re trying to say here…

Jhill: I’d settle for Crayton from Dallas
he doubles as a return man and is much cheaper. wouldn’t take much to get him either (5th-6th rounder?)

Best part of the game was the Tommy Kelly interview.
He lost 35 pounds by running and switching from chili dogs to cheeseburgers!!

It really worries me what the coaches think about Mcfadden. He ran “really hard” between the tackles. He had 8 runs for a cumulative of 0 yards and one run for 9 yards outside. That kind of production (which he’s had since he’s been here never averaging 4 yards per carry) is NOT what we need.

You shouldn’t just look at a box score. If you had watched the game you would have seen that on the two carries where McFadden lost yards there was a 49er left unblocked and in the backfield with him.

Brown is healthy and Marshall in on that sqaud now. Williams will get morphed by Benson if you dare start him at the flex position.

How good was our draft class this year? is Ware the only guy out of 8 not making the team?
-Houston and Mcfadden are impressive
-Mcclain is solid and will continue to improve
-Veldheer, and Campbell will be starters by next year
-Goethel and Brown are good for depth

Charlie Casserly? You mean the unemployed guy? If his opinion is so valid, why is not on an NFL staff.
Could it be because he gets more wrong than right?

I was going to take Bruce, but Plunkett beat me to it.
Was looking at Lou Murphy but realized he had the same week 10 bye that 2 of my other WR’s had, so went with Roy Williams.
Maybe I will pick up Michael Bennett once D-Mac gets hurt.

we thought about that, not too many people willing to drive all the way out to Podunk to drop off & pick up thier kiddos
my wife has decided to go part-time effective 11/8/2010. then shortly after she’ll be on maternity leave and pick back up part-time 6-8 weeks or whatever her work allows
she’ll have 2 days off with little man. the only 3 days we’ll probably have him with a babysitter. some lady from Venezuela that only charges $15 per day and will teach him spanish too
too bad I took 4 years of German in high school … haha

Here’s what I saw yesterday.
For the first time in a few years we can actually have an intelligent debate about who our starting QB should be.
Campbell seems more relaxed and poised in the pocket. And he throws a beautiful spiral. Sometimes he seems a little too relaxed because he doesn’t realize that our line will get him killed if he doesn’t get the ball outta there quicker. But that opening drive yesterday was a thing of beauty. he was calm, collected, and has a good command of the huddle
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. GRADOWSKI FOR STARTING QB!!!!!
2. We will never be what we should if the O-line dont get fixed wassup with the Cable guy?(coaching problems and lack of talent)
3. Huff needs to be in on obvious passing downs only, cuz he gets ran over more the idianapolis 500
4. Our team should be top of the league when it comes to interceptions and top ten in sacks (that comes down to coaching because we have the talent)
5. I think we have a decent WR core they just need to keep working harder we will be fine louis Murphy my favorite player on O since last year will be special he’s a Raider type player (As well as QB Grad)
6. Better specail teams coach
I cant stress enough our O-line if we had that Dmac would be better, our QB’s would be better which would make or receivers better which would make our whole Offense better which would make our Defense better and i think we have one the beter D’s in the league but they have to work to hard and too much
