Campbell throwing at practice
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, August 30th, 2010 at 11:26 am in Oakland Raiders.
Jason Campbell was participating in a walk-through practice session with the other Raiders quarterbacks Monday, throwing passes of 20 to 30 yards in range, beat writer Steve Corkran reports.
Campbell sustained a stinger and a right wrist injury in Saturday night’s 28-24 loss to San Francisco, with coach Tom Cable saying during a conference call that the wrist injury was of bigger concern with regard to the season opener Sept. 12 against Tennessee.
The Raiders have just three days to prepare for Thursday night’s game against the Seattle Seahawks, with rosters cut to 75 on Wednesday.
Among those who were on the field during the media window (practice is now closed to the media except for warmups and some drills) were center Samson Satele (ankle), Richard Seymour (triceps) and cornerback Chris Johnson (hamstring).
Those not present included wide receiver Chaz Schilens (knee), defensive tackle Desmond Bryant (elbow), cornerback Joey Thomas (concussion), running back Michael Bush (thumb), defensive end Alex Daniels (groin) and defensive end Jay Richardson (groin).
I’ll pass along some post-practice news and notes as relayed by Steve . . .

Watkins may have earned himself a way out the door in that Niner game. He dropped that game winner in the end on 4th down and he also dropped another pass I believe earlier in that drive.

August 30th, 2010 at 12:00 pm
The Raiders play a defense that turns everything towards the middle of the field. You would expect McClain to have a ton of tackles.
Morrison had a ton of tackles.. They just happened to be 5-7 yards down field
McClain has to meet the RB at the line

I’m not sure what game some of you were watching.
Take away the punt/kickoff return and the garbage time TD at the end of the game and SF scores 14 points against our defense, despite the missed assignments, superb game by Patrick Willis, and sacks of Jason Campbell.
The SF Sissies had more false start and offside penalties than we did. We passed the ball against them at will, which is light years ahead of anything that we’ve seen since Gannon retired.
I know we have alot of improvement still to be made especially on the O-Line and Return coverage, but the Niners didn’t even come close to dominating.
If anything, all things considered, it was really more of a stalemate.

Ray Lewis in his prime would not have been that much more effective than McClain on most of those Niner runs. They just laid our D-line down and trampled them; I have seen some awful Raiders defensive lines in my time and this one, was right there with them Saturday night. Please don’t start in on our rookie MLB who is starting from day one. This defense has way too many other leaks.

so with cut days fast approaching, I only see a few battles left to be won:
WR (1 spot) – Nick Miller, Yamon Figurs, Todd Watkins. I keep waiting for one of these guys to step up on special teams, or make a big catch late in the game.
S (1 spot) – Hiram Eugene or Stevie Brown. I am rooting for Brown as he always seems to be around the ball and I am just tired of watching Eugene out there.
OL (1 spot) – Chris Morris or Eric Pears. I don’t understand why Cable is giving Pears so much run with the first team offense the last couple of weeks but there HAS to be a reason…right? Morris is just terrible at this point in his career.
LB (3 spots) – Sam Williams, Ricky Brown, Thomas Howard, Slade Norris, Travis Goethel. This is still the most contested position on the squad. Special teams will determine who stays and who goes. I am rooting for Williams, Howard, and Goethel at this point.

_______________________________________________________
I know some of you may not agree with me on this one, but I say Gradkowski.
Until we get our line fixed, Grads has the right internal clock that helps him get the ball out quick. Campbell holds on to the ball a tad too long with the weak o-line that we have.
Campbell also hesitates to run for the first down when there appears to be a wide opening sometimes.
Grads has the energy and play making ability that I think we will need to get a win on the road. When he entered the game on Sat. the whole Coliseum just lit up with electricity. His enthusiasm is contagious, and he was deadly accurate as well.
I like Campbell alot. I just don’t want him to rush back and get hit again, even worse, and be out for the season.

============================================
No. Henderson sucked out there. The problem with John Henderson is he gets NO PUSH in the passing game. So when you see him line up, you can audible to a pass play, set your protections to pick up the ends, and sit back there for hours until someone comes uncovered. Note the TD pass to Josh Morgan. In 3rd and short Henderson is very good. Other than that, not so good. And notice how the Whiners went for the pass play on the 4th and one.
August 30th, 2010 at 12:26 pm
cable is a good guy, but he will stear the raiders to lose close games like always. just like this niner game. he doesn’t have that hate for losing like the great coaches do. people always give him a pass, but losing is losing and he has done that alot. i dont need to watch the raiders games to know the outcome. raiders give a good showing, but find a way to lose at the end. can someone call cable out on this? anyone?? did anyone tell cable that raider fans hate hate hate despise loathe detest losing to the niners? did he not get the memo?
yeah, i know… many will say, its just a preseason game, not a big deal, yada yada, but losing is losing and especially to the hated niners. owe well, i guess we should be happy that we put decent points on the scoreboard as opposed to years past. hooray for mediocre.

I was thinking the same thing. That drop at the end probably sealed his fate. Watkins has had plenty of chances, but never really seized the moment. He could have sealed the deal with that catch.
===========================================
Watkins has made some plays for us as well. He caught the 3rd and 19 pass in KC last year on the winning drive, and had beaten his man which drew a PI penalty on the last drive Sat night. That penalty set up the chance to win the game. That 4th down catch was a VERY difficult catch. He should’ve made it tho.

I think our WRs have a very bright future, they’re big fast and hard workers. Look how much better DHB looks. Gradkowski looked very good out there and he had 3 consecutive WR drops on one sequence (got bailed out by a SF penalty on one of them) and the Watkins drop (guy has to be cut for that one). I think we have a qb controversy…
August 30th, 2010 at 12:33 pm
I think people panicking about the inconsistent play of McClain in the Niner game should all calm down a bit here. He had 6-7 tackles and 2 assists.
Please remember people….the kid is STILL a ROOKIE!
He is still learning and the Niner game was a good learning experience for him. He will only get better.
I also think maybe the Marshall should have McClain call the defensive signals to start with.
They should have Branch making defensive signal calls and McClain should be the backup and he can still learn. McClains’ only responsibility right now should be focusing on making plays and being in the right spots.

Just Win: the one thing the Raiders aren’t lacking in is pass rushers
John Henderson is a pure run stuffer. the only true nose tackle on the roster
if you want to keep getting gashed up the gut – cut him. if you’re sick of it, put the man on the field 15-25 snaps per game and watch him do his thing
================================================
Read my post again rockstar. If I were an opposing Q and I saw henderson lined up oppo me, I would hold one back in to chip one end, have the TE double the other end, and I would sit back there for days until my receivers uncovered. The NFL is now a passing league. You can’t pass rush, you can’t play. Tommie Kelly was VERY good at pass rush and run defense Sat. That’s what we need here.

Hey guys.
Been a while.
What are your thoughts on Mario Henderson this year. I recently read an article stating he was doing poorly. Living on the East coast, I have to wait for the regular season to get the games. I get nflnetwork, but do not like watching games when I already know the outcome. I have first heard Henderson was doing well, however read an article today suggesting otherwise.
Anyone…. PLEASE>>>>>
I think he’s our best LT unless Veldheer overtakes him. He got burned bad on the play that took Campbell out of the game but don’t recall him allowing another sack in the preseason. 49er lb’s (Willis mostly) were in the backfield all day, that’s the middle of the lines fault (Gallery, Veldheer, Carlisle)

Figurs sucks and Miller has done little to nothing to justify another year on the dole.
Brown seems like aplay maker and Oakland likes that but don’t know if he’s got enough to make the cut. Eugene is Eugene…

watkins is the one who sucks–dropping multiple key passes. figurs made all of his catches. figurs has done well for his limited plays.

Yes, I did notice that. heck, singletary would have sent out the entire first defense to win the darn game. you can tell he wanted to win. going for it every chance he got on fourth down, bringing first teamers in at the end of the game like you stated, maybe even paying off the refs for those sad PI calls. lol.

With the depth of our team we could sustain injuries to most key players Nnamdi, Seymour, Campbell, Schilens, but the guy we cannot afford to lose is Miller. Our other TE’s aren’t close. I’m thinking Barnes could hold the fort down if Gallery went out and Brown could fill in for Mcclain temporarily…

My pre-cut notes from camp and 3 preseason games…
QB – JC, Grads, Boller with Hue J is a HUGE upgrade. Grads last year looked no where near as good as he does in ‘10. The Pitt game gave him confidence and he’s now a gamer. QB depth is a must in the NFL.
RB – Bush is the only thing close to an every down back. He gets hurt, it gets ugly. DMAC tripping and falling on a draw vs SF about sums it up.
WR – DHB needs to keep improving. Chaz is oft-injured and Murphy isn’t a secret any more. The rest might get 3 TDs combined all year.
OL – Fix it now, people yell. Then on draft day they ignorantly claim you can get OL starters in later rounds. The Raiders have ONE guy they invested a 1st or 2nd rd pick on. Cable has him playing at a pro bowl level. The rest are cast-offs and projects. Henderson was a 3rd who is developing into an average guy. In the NFL a full-time LT taken in the 3rd is a success. Brittle-bone Satele has never gone 16 games so expect a 3rd rd project to start. If Campbell ligitly unseats Carlisle during the year a 4th rd project will be starting. BTW – Giving up a few sacks to a D like SF doesn’t mean the line sucks. Center and RG are the big concerns.
DL – The new coach has these guys playing great in pass rush but the jury is still out on run stopping.
B – McClain is already better at filling gaps. They have helped stuff many short yardage plays. Coverage? We’ll see.
DB – Branch becoming a star. Huff and Routt playing better. Mitchell a good short yardage option. Ware and Mcfadden decent for rookies. Deepest area on team.

August 30th, 2010 at 1:42 pm
We need a beter O-line bottom line that would maek a QB’s safer and better and RB’s safer and better which would make our WR’s better which would make our Offense better which would make our Defense better (which i think talent wise we have the the best) We need better coaching on specails teams and D. Louis Murphy is going top be a factor on our team i thought tht last year our WR’s just need to keep working. We just need better players up front cuz a good o-line can make a decent QB and a decnet RB look excellent we have most of the pieces, Oh yea Huff needs to come out on Rushing downs he cant tackle he gets ran thru like he aint there WAAAAAYYY too much. We should lead the leagune in interceptions or clspoe to it every year..it all comes down to having time on the offense to make plays
August 30th, 2010 at 1:47 pm
The play of the D-line I can handle, becuase to some extent it seemed like the Raiders dialed back the pressure, which is smart considering they are playing these guys again this season in a game that matters.
But the O-line, WTF? Three years Cable has been here preaching about what a great O-line coach he is, since that first year he has acquired Mario Henderson, Kwame Harris, Khalif Barnes, Samson Satele, Cooper Carlisle, Cornell Green, Langston Walker, Erik Pears and moved Bob Gallery to Gaurd, and has the line gotten one iota better since Cable’s very first season with us? It has regressed if anything. He might be good with scheme and technique, but personnel analysis seems lacking. I am tired of all these scrubs, what does it say that 3 years after dumping Langston Walker, he is back starting for us. Every draft most of us opine for hours on which tackles, gaurds and centers the team should get; and other than Bruce Campell and Jared Veldheer (both massive projects), they have drafted nobody to help the line. I really hope Campbell and Veldheer pan out, but even if they do we need more linemen AND more talented linemen..1st and 2nd rounders, not projects, cast-offs and scrubs.

VittorioTafur Oakland released four players – TE Tony Stewart, WR Paul Hubbard, G Allen Smith and FB Chane Moline – and has one more to announce Tuesday.
August 30th, 2010 at 1:50 pm
COW,
Good to see you back in here. I agree about Bush being the every-down down back, and about the backtracking on drafting o-linemen early. I wanted Pouncey, but you can’t have him and McClain both, and I guess they figured Morrison sucked worse than Satele. McClain is a newbie, but as you say fills gaps that Morrison couldn’t even find.
Question for you; would you keep both Bennett and Cartwright, or would you cut one of them?
August 30th, 2010 at 1:53 pm
COW,
your thoughts on the O-line mirror my own, almost word for word. This continues to be the team’s biggest weakness, despite our head coach specializing in it…
August 30th, 2010 at 1:55 pm
What I see is 4 Qb’s to get through a 16 game season, 6 Qb’s if we see post season. We need to keep them all, bring back JR and sign Favre. This will give us a chance, This O-line destroys Qb’s, not the opposition…..

Suprised the Raiders released Stewart.
I’ve assumed we’d keep three TE’s.
What gives? Waiver wire claim of another TE?
Reese as a Hybrid FB/TE?
Curious.
August 30th, 2010 at 2:02 pm
TE Tony Stewart, WR Paul Hubbard, G Allen Smith and FB Chane Moline
The only mild surprise here is Tony Stewart, but I figured they would only carry 2 TE’s with all the young offensive players they are trying to develop.
These first cuts are guys they dont even want on the PS, so Moline must have lost to Manase Tonga and Alex Daniels in the FB battle.
I have not heard Paul Hubbard or Allen Smith’s names mentioned in the entire pre-season. wa waaaa

Gradkowski made a believer out of me on Saturday. He hit every single receiver right on the numbers and quickly. The problem is our o line is so bad, he is going to get killed.
August 30th, 2010 at 2:25 pm
I think thhe team keeps Cartright and Bennet because DMAC is not a legit 30 carry option if Bush gets / stays hurt.
TE Stewart became expendable late in 2009 when Cable had OT Pears playing as the power blocking TE in short yardage sets.
Cable doesn’t claim to be an o-line guy. He is. Every draft he has publicly drooled over 1st rd talent but we drafted DHB and Mitchell for example. Whining about Harris and Barnes? Why? Why not take a low-cost flyer on a guy who was thought of as 1st rd talent especialy if you know you aren’t getting Clady on draft day? If he flops you’re no worse off. If he does a Jim Plunkett style emergence, you’re gold.
The o-line is a work in progress but remember it is FIVE positions. Cable cut Carlisle remember but had to bring him back because he’s better than anybody available. Cable has been given one 1st, two 3rds, a 4th and a bunch of free agents to fill five spots. He’s making t-bone out of hamburger but you expect prime rib?
