Mum’s the word on Raiders aches, pains

The Raiders entered lockdown mode Monday in their first post-training camp practice session at the club facility in Alameda.

Some news and notes as relayed by beat writer Steve Corkran:

– Coach Tom Cable conceded he was happy to see Jason Campbell throwing the ball after suffering a stinger and a right wrist injury against San Francisco, but wasn’t going into detail about injuries to Campbell or anyone else.

“We are going to adhere to the in-season injury policy and we’re not going to talk about injuries, or where anyone’s at or what’s going on with them,” Cable said.

Editorial aside: OK, then how come through at least 90 percent of his coaching tenure with the Raiders, Cable has opened press briefings with the statement, “Quick injury update . . . ”

Cable left it open regarding Campbell’s availability Thursday night, even though it’s a virtual certainty he won’t play.

“Don’t know that yet,” Cable said. “And it has nothing to do with injuries, it has to do with what we’re going to do with our team.”

Editorial aside: Oops. He just talked about injuries.

As for Michael Bush, he may or may not have had a super secret procedure done on his fractured left thumb Monday.

“We’re not going to talk about those things, any of that,” Cable said.

When asked if he could confirm Bush had the procedure, he answered, “No.”

Editorial aside: An educated guess _ sounds like the head coach got a lecture about being too forthcoming about injuries. Another educated guess _ Al Davis would have much rather have heard Cable say Bush’s thumb was “sore” rather than fractured and not mentioned that Chaz Schilens would be out three to six weeks.

– Cable repeated there has been no movement about adding an extra wide receiver given the absence of Schilens. Receivers recently on the market include Antonio Bryant (cut by the Bengals) and Laveranues Coles (cut by the Jets) although Bryant has been injured and Coles has talked of retiring.

– Cable on Bruce Gradkowski: “I think he certainly went and proved he’s the backup quarterback here.”

– It may be time for an in-season policy on about injuries, but it’s not yet the in-season policy for media access as the locker room remained closed and only a few players were made available.

– Safety Tyvon Branch didn’t sound overly concerned about the 49ers rushing for 166 yards, pointing out that the Raiders are still getting adjusted to new schemes and were without a key piece of the run defense.

“We still have to work out the rough patches. We changed a lot of stuff up coming into this year as opposed to last year,” Branch said. “And then Richard Seymour not playing I think is the biggest difference. He gets those guys fired up up front. Once we get him back it’s a tremendous change in the defense, tremendous.”

Cable thought there was no issue with run fits or assignments. It was poor tackling, pure and simple.

– Left tackle Mario Henderson wasn’t ducking the issue of who was responsible for Campbell’s stinger. Forty-Niners outside linebacker Travis LaBoy was his assignment.

“I take responsibility. That’s my fault. The only thing I can do is get better,” Henderson said. “Thank God the injury is minor. All I can do, like they told me, is get better and move on. Just try not to let it happen again.”

Campbell told Henderson there were no hard feelings.

“I even texted him. It was like, ‘I apologize. I hope you’re OK.’ He told me he was good,” Henderson said. “Like I said, now it’s behind me. We can just move on. It shows a lot of credit.”

– Rookie middle linebacker Rolando McClain arrived with the reputation of carrying himself like a veteran on the field and in the film room. He’s already a pro at avoiding interviews as well. Sometimes he doesn’t even respond with to a request with his voice, he’ll put his hands palm down in a gesture which apparently means “no chance” and then keeps on walking.

– Cable’s review of Jared Veldheer, in his first start as a center in the NFL:“I thought pretty good. There are two plays I would like to have back. He probably would do. But I thought overall he did a fine job and I think for a guy going in playing against a 3-4, being covered every snap like that, you would have to say it was probably a little better than expected.”

– With Schilens out, here is how Cable handicapped the wide receivers competition behind Louis Murphy and Darrius Heyward-Bey: “I think there’s a number of guys. I think Yamon Figurs has stepped it up. Jacoby Ford. We’ve got to teach him to get his feet up underneath him when he’s coming out of breaks a little bit. Johnnie Lee Higgins has showed some things. So we have a nice corps right there, a next group just ready to step up.”

If Todd Watkins had caught that last pass from Gradkowski, he’d probably have merited a mention.

Cable’s top three priorities for the Seattle game on short rest: 1) Tackling; 2) Kick coverage; 3) Consistency on offense.

I feel like they are setting up to keep Reece as the lone FB. Tonga should slip to the practice squad, and Lawton will be available after his suspension if Reece regresses in his blocking…but for real, I think Reece is a huge part of their offensive game plan this season. That dude is a fantastic route-runner has great hands and amazing speed for a FB. When they sent him out against the Niners LB’s it was a complete mismatch. I have a feeling Hue Jackson has plans to create a lot of mismatches with Reece all season.

    ^^^^^^^^
I hope so….because the offense needs another hidden pass catching weapon to catch defenses off guard.

I just have my doubts that Cartwright or Bennett could truly take over for Bush if he went down for an extended period of time.

Cartwright is a decent enough role player, and Bennett has showed flashes. But at 30 and 32, could these guys get through the entire season, against starting defenses? I don’t know. I hope so, because I don’t envision a scenario where Bush and DMac are healthy all season.

How do you do that on the net? Anyways I’m saying I’m not an expert. My football knowledge is coaching OL and DL at the HS level. I do watch alot of College and NFL ball, and Ford has shown me nothing. Maybe if I was watching the camp where he looked good I would be singing a diffrent tune. My reasons are this..
    DHB, 1rst rounder
    Murphy, best WR we got
JLH, versitality and most experiance with Raiders
Chaz, The Raiders still see him as our #1
Figurs, looked better then Ford in the preseaon GAMES.
anyways I’ve got to run, been nice yakin at you all.
    See Ya Nation!

  • Thec07

I for one want to see Veldheer at C, but we also need to play the best 5 blockers and pass protectors. Satele at C makes sense until we groom either V, or draft someone. V can be moved to another line postion.
Satele is at least servicable for now…The rookie played good in my opinion and will get better…

    Question:

Assuming both stayed healthy, who would be playing better at the center position by week 17? Veldheer or Satele?

If Veldheer is already this good after a month or so, imagine how much better he will get with playing time. Sawtelle is as good as he is going to get.

  • Raider Dell

The comments on V or Satelle in my opinion, aren’t the physicality or athletic ability of both players, it boils down to experience.

V, needs to watch film and develop better technique. V needs to watch film to call the protections for the line and that’s not easy. The defensive schemes vary and have many multiple looks.

My personal opinion is V, on the P Willis gap blitz was V responsibility. As the center, you must protect the A gap first , before you assist either guard in blocking.

    My WR analysis:
Schilens-I think the coaching staff gives him one more season before the thought of cutting him even crosses their minds.
DHB-Allen Davis Scholarship and James Jett Grant recipient, he aint going nowhere for awhile.
Murphy-got the job done as a rookie several times last year.
JLH-Sadly, he is the vet WR of this group, he is staying.
Ford-He was a 4th rounder, has wheels and showed enough in camp to scare the coaches away from risking him on the practice squad, plus they are desperate for special teams help.
Watkins-has clung on with this team for two years, but has done nothing to endear himself to fans or management when he is given a chance. Cut him!
Miller-battled through injuries and has looked OK in camp as only a 2nd year guy, he should be fighting with Figurs for a spot
Figurs-I have not seen him do anything as a WR, but Cable seems to talk him up and he might be our best/only KR option once the dust settles on the roster moves.

  • DKnight007

I think they need to move Veldheer to the starting RT position.

We all have opinions and you seem to think only yours are…right.

  • severeraiderz

Also people keep putting talented players on the practice squad…..they have to clear waivers in order to be put there. Ford would get instantly picked up….i think that Norris and Cooper would as well.

For those of you that dont want Figurs on the team i hope you realize that its either him or Cartwright due to the lack of faith in JLH and the cautious approach taken with the development of Ford. Figurs has also made a few nice plays and had some good practices.

  • Just Fire Baby

Priest could be right from here on until eternity, and his opinion should still be taken with a grain of salt being the endless hours he logged defending Jamarcus and calling us everything from morons-to-know nothings about the game of football-to-racists.

Interesting opinion article by Lombardi in NFLN. I know some of you, maybe all of you, can’t stand the guy, but his article brings you in to the logic and thinking how the 53 man roster shapes up.

My personal opinion is, the Raider Organization knows who will make the first 50 slots, it’s the last three that will play out Thursday night.

Example, Tony Stewart getting cut. How many of us saw that one!

  • RaiderRockstar

    Agreed

Cartwright vs Figurs may be the last spot on the 53

  • severeraiderz

Watching the sack by Laboy i saw that Gallery was also partly responsible. He had gotten beaten pretty badly as well which prevented Campbell from being able to step up and elude the pressure.

Cable is being extremely generous in his grading of Veldheer. In two stints at center he has allowed 2 sacks….one of those being against the second team defense. He also missed blitz calls leading to another sack and has not gotten to the second level on run plays or opened any holes. Satele has given up a sack but otherwise has been solid and has consistently gotten to the second level on run plays and screens. Look at the difference in effectiveness of bush from the first 2 games to this last one.

  • priesttj

    JHill

You guy’s have selective memories, when Cambell hurt his wrist it was due to an inside rush. Whe DMC went dwn inside blitz. The kids had an uneven game but for his first start I thought he did better than I thought he would. But it’s easy to see he has a long way to go. You’ll get Campbell killed if that kid can’t see and anticipate a simple Agap blitz. Right now he can’t that is not a knock on him he’s been playing C for 2 months it’smuch better than one would expect. But it not nearly up to standard. That was basic stuff and he whiffed bigtime. He wasn’t even engaged in a block he just didn’t notice it.

People think I’m saying this stuff because I don’t like the kid and that aint it at all. He’s NOT ready yet.

    Priest,

Look man, you have your opinion, I have mine. I’ve watched the game over and over. The play where Campbell hurt his wrist had nothing to do with Veldheer. Willis was running right behind Walker who had his back turned.

I said the DMac play was Veldheers fault!

Veldheer missing an A gap block is somehthing he can definitely learn from. No worse tha Satele getting rag dolled, JC getting hit and the ensuing INT is what I’m saying.

What does NOT ready mean, mistake free?

The veteran starter is NOT ready either then!

  • priesttj

It’s almost like you guy’s use smoke and mirrors to watch games. The reason Grads had more time in the second half is because is because when we hit that big play to Murphy they stopped blitzing. We burned them on an all out blitz. After that they backed off and P Willis maybe blitz once more the rest of the game.

They were rushing 3-4 players that’s why the prtection got much better.
