Stewart among first wave of cuts

Veteran tight end Tony Stewart was the only surprise as the Raiders got a head start on Wednesday’s cutdown to 75 by cutting four players.

Also released was fullback Chane Moline, offensive lineman Allen Smith and wide receiver Paul Hubbard. The Raiders must release another player by Wednesday.

Stewart played three of his nine NFL seasons with the Raiders as a reserve tight end and special teams player. He caught 21 passes with Oakland and also served as the team’s NFLPA player representative.

With Stewart out of the picture, it opens up a job for the third tight end behind Zach Miller and Brandon Myers. The other tight ends on the roster are veteran John Owens and recently-signed H-back/tight end Eric Butler.

More to come . . .

Look at the photo of the big sack on Campbell on the cover of the Raiders section. It was a blow to the head and should have been called a penalty.

Blackouts are within a 100 mile radius of the stadium however I am not sure if u go 105 miles to a local bar if you will be able to watch it or not.

    Anyone?

  • Coach on Wheels

I think thhe team keeps Cartright and Bennet because DMAC is not a legit 30 carry option if Bush gets / stays hurt.

TE Stewart became expendable late in 2009 when Cable had OT Pears playing as the power blocking TE in short yardage sets.

Cable doesn’t claim to be an o-line guy. He is. Every draft he has publicly drooled over 1st rd talent but we drafted DHB and Mitchell for example. Whining about Harris and Barnes? Why? Why not take a low-cost flyer on a guy who was thought of as 1st rd talent especialy if you know you aren’t getting Clady on draft day? If he flops you’re no worse off. If he does a Jim Plunkett style emergence, you’re gold.

The o-line is a work in progress but remember it is FIVE positions. Cable cut Carlisle remember but had to bring him back because he’s better than anybody available. Cable has been given one 1st, two 3rds, a 4th and a bunch of free agents to fill five spots. He’s making t-bone out of hamburger but you expect prime rib?

Stewart cut – could mean Eric Butler makes the Practice squad and we keep just 2 tight ends?

John Owens is 6’3 and 255 – he has good size and a 9 year vet.

    INTERESTING!

  • raidersxy

One thing that stood out to be in the niners game was we did not have one sack all game compared to the previous two. hmmmmm

  • fat kidd

    some team will pickup stewart

  • Coach on Wheels

The blackout goes over the 75 mile range because if a station in Sact has anybody in the radius, they can’t block just those signals so peeps outside 75 miles get blocked too because the station just doesn’t show it.

The Games are blacked out on Bay Area Channels (2, 5, 11, 36, 44, ect.) You don’t have to go 100 miles away to watch the game, you just have to find a TV station outside the Bay Area that broadcasts the game: like LA or Sac.
I live up in Mendo Co., which is over 100 miles away from the bay, but the stupid cable provider only carries the Bay Area stations.

One thing that I noticed during the niner game is Campbell hit every pass and drove the team to a td on the first drive, against a team that believes it has a top 5 defense this year, hmm…..

I think they only keep 2 TE. They have been going with an extra lineman on short yardage situations instead of 3 TE in the preseason. This allows the team to keep an extra LB or DB for special teams.

  • Plunketthead

The Bungles paid Bryant 8 MILLION and he did not catch a single pass.

Looks like Al is not the only GM/owner who is afraid to gamble

    Respect your opinion COW.

Cable can’t make Chicken salad out of Chichen shiiite.

However, the only T-Bone(s) I’ve seen, are our QB’s getting T-Boned by defenses.

Fargas got only 1 carry in Sunday’s game, a sign that he was not going to be around the team much longer.

    To keep things in perspective…

The Raiders o-line has given up FIVE sacks in 3 games. They have room to improve but they aren’t as terrible as people are saying. The Bears gave up 4 sacks just in 1 half to Wimbley. So yes, they could be worse.

COW, the only Lanes they are opening left us years ago, just saying, there is a reason our RB’s are averaging 1.5 yds per carry….

  • RaiderDaze

What was the count on dropped passes in a row. 4 or 5?

Raiders – tied fo 9th fewest sacks allowed. Tied with Colts, NYG, SF and others.

Currently 13th in Total Offense. 13th!

    Currently the #2 Pass D.

It is all preseason but anybody looking at the preseason as all doom & gloom isn’t paying attention.

  • http://Raiders4Ever.com 860Todd Christensen

COW, we need to BLITZ, 3/5 times a game, I don’t think AD is going with it……

  • Coach on Wheels

Todd they need to keep working on that but part of that average is there is a huge dropoff at RB after Bush.

There were some lanes for DMAC including a gaping hole on a draw but he fell down with little / no contact.

With Bush and Bennet they could run it.

PLUS they’ve been winning the battles in short / goal situations.

Not saying they’re great, just not terrible.

  • Coach on Wheels

Agree on the need to blitz. Didn’t vs SF and it let them get in a rythm.

  • fat kidd

no we dont need too blitz we need to rush the qb with everyone.

  • LhayeS37

the raiders never blitz because the d scheme is 20 years behind the times

You have to head out to Yuba City/Marysville to see the games. They black out all of the Sacramento area.
