Bush says he has `Bennett fracture’

Raiders running back Michael Bush said on his Twitter account Tuesday he underwent surgery the previous day that included the insertion of screws in his left thumb to repair a fracture.

Bush even gave it a name. It’s a “Bennett fracture,” which perhaps is fitting since teammate Michael Bennett was the one helping him tie his shoes in the locker room Saturday night.

According to an orthopedics web site, treatment for a Bennett fracture includes surgery if the joint surface is out of position to properly align bone fragments.

Bush gave no time frame for his return.

News and notes as relayed from beat writer Steve Corkran Thursday following practice, coach Tom Cable’s press briefing and media availability:

– Cable declined to name a starting center, saying it would be determined later in the afternoon. Since there is no media availability Wednesday, we’ll find out when the offense takes the field whether it’s Samson Satele or rookie Jared Veldheer.

– Let tackle Mario Henderson was getting a post-practice tutorial session from Cable, with line coach Jim Michalczik looking on.

“Just helping him. He and I have spent so much time together it’s easy for me to reach him or relate to him,” Cable said. “He’s frustrated by a couple of things, but they’re easily fixed.”

– Cable indicated during Monday’s session there could be a role for former starter Thomas Howard on the roster, and Howard sounds more than happy to accept it.

“It’s jut a blessing to be out here and playing the game we all love,” Howard said. “People forget that it’s an opportunity, and that’s how I I’m looking at it _ as an opportunity to go out and play. Just to get better.”

– Darren McFadden seemed to get a kick out of Cable’s assessment that he was “explosive” after gaining nine yards on seven carries.

“Nah, I felt like my legs were out there just turning,” McFadden said. “I wasn’t slowing everything down for myself, which is something I usually try to do is slow the game down in my head.”

– Michael Huff realizes the Raiders poor bottom line on rushing defensive over the past two weeks _ 177 yards to Chicago, 166 to San Francisco _ had a lot to do with an 89-yard burst by Matt Forte and a 49-yard burst by Frank Gore.

Guess who had the chance to stop both of those runs much earlier?

“We definitely took a step back the last two weeks,” Huff said. “We stop them for two or three yards and then they break one for 60 or 70. Some of that comes down to me. ONce it gets to me, it’s one-on-one. We definitely have the pieces of the puzzle to stop the run.”

– Darrius Heyward-Bey isn’t the only player who has battled fatigue.

“The team’s a little tired, that’s the only thing,” Cable said. “At the same time, we’re working to freshen them up.”

– Cable doesn’t share the concern most of the outside world has with the Raiders’ offensive line.

“It’s never really been a good-and-bad thing. It’s been good and I wish it was better,” Cable said. “Consistency is probably the No. 1 issue to me. We’ve had some things where you say, `dang, we’re going to be real good. But we’ve got to continue to do it play after play. That’s the part that’s still missing a little bit in our offensive line — getting that every down consistency.

“Then I’m going to be very excited. And I think they’re close.”

– Tight end Eric Butler was cut as the Raiders reached the 75-fan limit. One more cut to 53, with the Seattle game giving player’s a last chance to make a good impression.

– Cable when asked if he could in any way clarify the situation of quarterback Jason Campbell, “No, I cannot.” Later, when asked if Campbell’s reputation for getting off the deck in Washington gave him cause to be optimistic about his availability for the opener, Cable said, “Yes.”

Hey, you take what you can get.

    860,

I didnt say Huff was not in more plays. My point is Huff is just not a physical tackler like Branch or MM34. That is why Huff is out there and MM34 is only in on nickel. It would be nice to see MM34 improve his cov skills and replace Huff out there. Huff improved drastically last year but he will never be a physical tackler.

I’m sure Gruden makes a pile of dough announcing. He doesn’t have the stress of coaching (that whole losing thing). The physical demand on a NFL head coach, the coming in to the building before the sun comes up and staying till after it’s gone down. He gets his football fix while doing something he loves…talking football and running his mouth for $$$$.

    It’s all good.

I’m for sure not any kind of expert but I would have to say the NFL Draft and drafting players is hit or miss. Not any easy thing to do.

10-6, back in the playoffs and a surprise return to the AFC Championship game where karma makes a Silver and Black comeback and restores the Nation to the place they should have been in 2001.
The RAIDERS destroy the semblance of a football team from the “NFC” and there was much rejoicing.
It is August still and no place for small thinkers.

Aig, Huff has been holding his own, un-injured, and doing our team well as he can, develope the Rooks, keep Huff, he’s really not that bad for us now, IMHO

take last years team at 5-11 al put together a team that talent wise should have been 8-8 at the worst if jamarcus russell was out of the picture from the beginning of the season last years team could of performed better than they did under gradkowski frye or losman but russell was out there because of the size of his contract, and thats what we need too get away from ,put the best player out there not the size of his pocket book!!!

Fat Kidd, I totally agree. Russell was to blame for last year’s team. And the year before that. And the year before that. And even the year before that. Al knew since 2003 he was going to draft Russell. And since Al can see the future, he knew how bad Russell would be. So that brought Al and the Raiders down.

Fat, on paper JR was Golden. He is a punk. I’m sure you have friends like that, they don’t plan out. It changed our teams plans for years, what we are made of is, what we do in the mean time to change that. We have done pretty good, but at the same time, what we spent in just his Gaurentee Money, we could have a NFL calibre O-line kickin Butt for us, look what he left us!

It’s nice to see a defense attack the football until the play is over. Too many times I see players who don’t think they will be involved in the play go half-speed. It’s that half-asz sh*t that more often than not, results in more yards for the opposition.

  • JLofty

Mitchell will never replace Huff they play a diff position. Mitchell is never going to be a Free Saftey in the NFL. He can be a SS tho. Furthermore I think Tyvone Branch COULD be a FS and a D@MN good one too.
So I hereby proclaim my desire to see Branch and Mitchell as the starting S tandem on the best secondary in the league. Keep Stevie Brown too, kid looks good thus far. Eugene meet the Turk…

WARaider, if Gruden is so great why isn’t he coaching? Al Davis is still in the league, because he’s a great GM. Gruden is out of coaching. I think that’s all the proof you need that Davis knows more about today’s game than Gruden.
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
waraider i completely agree with you, and real madden raider, your just a sadistic dumba$$. all you do is rely on negativity. duh al knows more than gruden. he’s been in the league for over 50 years.

gruden is out of coaching? not because he sucks as a head coach idiot just coaching takes a toll on men. dont forget gruden was the youngest coach to win a superbowl and dominated us in the sb. he’s the reason we went from 4-12 in ’97 to eventual top dogs in the league when we were with him. he won a superbowl in his first year as coach with a new team!! dude epitomized a raider and still likes them.

    mr,

still think your an idiot, but i have to admit i agree with you. all these football analyst say sh!t like russell had an inexperienced wr corps, bad o-line, and was with the raiders. people like that and agree like that are absolute loonies.

russell had arguably the best qb guru, hackett, they brought in players for him, gave him golden opportunities, and yet this dude never cared for “team” had a terrible work ethic and show he didnt care. russell would say he did good and it wasn’t his fault like blowout losses vs jets, broncos, and texans, and cost us the game against the chargers. he was uncommitted and is definitely the biggest bust in the NFL. ever.

  • BumpNRun

MR – Why the endless nagging about Davis? If Davis had only recently seized power of the Raiders, I might understand. But we’re working on 47 years now of Davis and the Raiders. He took over in ’63, and has been in control ever since. You’re going to tell me you have some connection to the pre-Davis Raiders? You would have to be as old as Davis to even know what those teams looked like. The Raiders ARE Davis, and have been since the NFL became the NFL. I understand the criticism – he’s slipped, and made plenty of mistakes – but at some point you have to take yourself off boards like this, buy a few Orange and Blue jerseys, and lavish praise on Pat Bowlen or something…

  • Kirk

    Bennett’s fracture…

Regardless of which approach is employed (nonsurgical, CRPP, or ORIF), immobilization in a cast or thumb spica splint is required for four to six weeks.

  • WARaider

    KoolKell

Thanks for the current stats. Would you say that a lot of those rushing yards against our defense were the fault of several or a 1 or 2 players? I think just 1 or 2. Where would we rank if the 89 yard play and the 49 yard play totaled only 10 yards instead of 138?

Offensive rank is somewhat reassuring but most of that rank was earned on the backs of second and third string players and opponents. Still encouraging though.

  • http://Raiders4Ever.com 860Todd Christensen

Fat, Gruden had a value to Dungy, he knew our play book, every lineup, everything Raider. Did we know we would end up there together? I don’t think Gruden tried to stick up ours, He played to win using everything available to him. I think Al respects him for that, even though we lost!

I dont think you can count stats in the preseason since it include the entire game of 2nd and 3rd stringers. I look at the preseason for purely the 1st vs 1st and any potential rookies.

So far we have looked decent for the 1st stringers.

  • BumpNRun

KoolKell – I understand. Like I said, the criticism is merited. But The Raiders aren’t like the Patriots or the Broncos or any other team in the NFL. The GMs of those teams are accountable to wins and losses. The Raiders aren’t. Simple as that. Never have been. So switch allegiance. That’s all I’m saying. You want a team accountable to wins and losses, switch teams.

Mitchell & Branch at Ss! Huff can play NB, CB, and FS on passing downs only.

People (RR) think I don’t like Huff, but I wanted us to draft him. He can cover, and he has good hands for a DB, but tackling is not his strength. He can be a great DB in the NFL, if we use him right and put him in situations to make plays.
