Raiders likely quiet today

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, September 3rd, 2010 at 1:52 pm in Oakland Raiders.

As other teams begin to release information regarding trades and cuts today to get down to the 53-man roster, expect the Raiders to wait until Saturday.

The club scheduled no conference call today, a player’s day off, with Tom Cable not scheduled to meet with the until Saturday afternoon.

A few things which must be taken into consideration as they cut 21 players (Luke Lawton goes on a suspended list and does not count against the roster until Week 3):

– Injuries. Michael Bush won’t be available for the opener unless he’s a miraculous healer after having screws inserted in his left thumb.

That means if the Raiders were considering cutting either Rock Cartwright or Michael Bennett, they’ll have to reconsider.

The mystery absence of Travis Goethel is also a factor. Cable alluded to an injury situation with Goethel _ one that was serious enough to keep him away from the stadium. That usually means surgery was involved.

The coaching staff really likes Goethel. It’s why I had him as a “lock” to make the 53-man roster. He has far exceeded expectations as a sixth-round draft pick.

The Raiders have not disclosed the nature of Goethel’s injury. They liked Nick Miller enough last year to carry him on the 53-man roster for 16 weeks when he had a broken shin. How long would they carry Goethel?

Cornerback Walter McFadden didn’t complete the game either with what looked as if it could be a hamstring injury.

– Cable said Trevor Scott’s move to defensive end _ he played on both the left and right side against Seattle _ was no more than moving people around to look at their versatility.

“We’re trying to mix it up as much as possible to give everyone different looks,” Scott said afterward. “It’s fun as heck.”

If the Raiders have determined Scott would be too much of a liability in pass coverage and he’s going to be a lineman again, that could be good news for Thomas Howard and/or Quentin Groves.

– Judging from Jay Richardson’s Twitter account, he should be ready to go in Week 1 after minor knee surgery late in training camp. Richardson tweeted he had a great rehab session Friday “running and cutting . . . it’s almost time . . . thank God.”

– With Marcel Reece sitting it out with the starters, do the Raiders go with a second fullback? Seems unlikely with the need for an extra running back. That would make Manase Tonga a candidate for the practice squad. Tonga caught a 32-yard screen pass for a touchdown against the Seahawks.

“I figure the touchdown couldn’t have come at a better time, given it’s the last preseason game, the game where everyone is trying to earn a spot and a job,” Tonga said. “I was fortunate enough to have some great people around me finishing blocks.”

– Khalif Barnes spent the entire game at left tackle, which could mean he’s now the backup to Mario Henderson with Jared Veldheer moving fulltime to center. As a starter.

– Thanks to everyone who participated in Thursday night’s live in-game chat. Preseason football is the biggest sham going, but the interaction and good-natured trading of jabs almost made the game bearable.

I’ll be working on NFL preview stuff for the Bay Area Newsgroup papers most of the day . . .

With Crayton aboard, the Chargers might cut WR Josh Reed soon.

The Steelers have authorized C/G Justin Hartwig to seek a trade. They might also cut RB Jonathan Dywer.

Also, it’s hard to envision the Bills keeping RB Marshawn Lynch around for much longer.

Hmmm, if he is a liability against the pass at LB and a liability against the run as a DE….then what the hell good is he?

Raiders RB Bush to Miss 4 Weeks

    By JOE KUKURA
Updated 1:00 PM PDT, Fri, Sep 3, 2010

You’ll have to wipe that post-win smirk off your face, Raider Nation. Terrible news from Jerry McDonald’s Oakland Tribune Raiders blog, where McDonald reports that running back Michael Bush’s wrist fracture will keep him out for a month or more.

That means the Raiders will be without last year’s leading rusher until week four, Oct. 3 against the Houston Texans.

Realize this is not an official report from a team doctor. The Raiders lowered the cones of silence on injuries last week and refuse to give any more injury reports.

But Michael Bush did disclose on his own Twitter page that he suffered a Bennett’s fracture. He also twitpic’d a photo of himself going in for the wrist surgery on Tuesday.

They make you wear a shower cap for wrist surgery? Who runs this hospital, Ruth Buzzi?

McDonald discussed the Bennett’s fracture condition with orthopedic surgeon Dr. Michael Schwartz, team doctor for Hofstra University and the Arena Football New Jersey Dragons. “A time span of four to six weeks following surgery would be a ‘best case scenario,” McDonald wrote, adding that Dr. Schwartz “conceded he was speaking in general terms and did not know the specifics of Bush’s injury.”

The Raiders still have a healthy Darren McFadden, but may look to add another available veteran. As McDonald notes, Justin Fargas is currently available.

Joe Kukura is a freelance writer who thinks Bush twitters very eloquently on the hell of injured thumbs.

Why is it so important to be right on a player that has never played DB in the NFL.

I, left our debate this morning for a meeting and you gave some examples of Huff’s ability to play DB.

Yet, there is no proof he can.

The debate should start with, why he is not a DB, not that he should be a DB.

For example, the Raiders secondary coach until his recent retirement was Willie Brown. I believe, if Willie Brown can evaluate any player, it would be a cover 1 DB. Willie Brown has the experience, and knowledge, to convert or help with the technique of that position.( see Nnamdi )

My question is, forget about the different Head coaches, who never moved him to DB, or the defensive Coord. who never moved him to DB, you would have to say Willie Brown, saw no potential in Huff, as a corner. Don’t you think if Huff was meant to be a corner, Brown would have stormed in Davis office and appraised him of Huff future potential at DB.

If Huff, was a corner in the Raiders man to man system, which they play almost 90% of the time, we possibly would have never drafted, Routt, or traded for Meangelo Hall and wasted two draft picks, or even drafted W McFadden or Ware this past draft.

There were others also who have come and gone as raider draft picksas DB’S.

Huff was drafted #7 overall to play SS, which even that was a position, he was not suited for. The reasons were to defend Gates in SD and Gonzalez in KC and Denver’s TE’S.

His physical play didn’t match up well with his skills in the box, consenquently, was moved to free safety were he is getting better.

The Raider Orgnization plays cover 1, man to man, the DB has his back to the QB, where as the safety, in the defense the Raiders deploy has his face towards the QB.

Huff skills, suit his play to face the Qb, that’s why some on this blog have stated he may be able to play the Tampa 2, due to the Tampa 2 DB, face the QB.

You and I, can go around and around, on his ability as a DB, I don’t questionhis speed, or athletic ability, or smarts. Huff is a safety in the Raider system, and I haven’t seen any signs he can play DB.

The coaches would have played him there by now.

My argument has more logic than your previous comments.

In my comment above, where did I say Huff is a great FS. You have yet to provide me, with any logic on why he should be an occasional DB, other than you have seen him play there. Well then, If that’s the case why wasn’t he converted to a DB, since his earlier play was good as a DB, according to you.

Art Shell, convinced Davis to select Huff, as I noted above comment to play tight ends, in the AFC west.

His play in texas near the box, was a factor in his selection, to help the Raiders D in stopping those players in the AFC west.

You have cited his twitter account, as a reason to play DB, his hips and he asked Woodson for his number.

All of those points can be said to be his opinion. First, many players who want a number from a previous player, out of respect will ask that player, if he could use his number. Let me provide an example, Robert Gallery changed his number and asked Steve Wisnewski, if he could wear his number. At that time Gallery was at left Tackle.

Your comment this morning, “Huff has good hips”, ok great. Can he play, the corner position in a bump and run style, and with his back to the QB. Hips have a bearing on a DB, yet their are many tangible physical attributes,Huff may not have.

And his twitter account, is meaningless to me. He is a employee, and must play, the position they feel would be better for the team and his career.

Finally, he was benched in 08, due to his lack of confidence and overall play. Many players over the years get benched, some recover like Huff did and some do not.

Huff decided to work hard, and study hard for his position as FS, the work he put in has shown up on the field.

You can blame the organization so much, the player has some responsibility also towards his career.

IT IS JUST A PERSONNEL PACKAGE!

Yeesh. Scott has always played DE in certain packages. If Shaug is #1 and Jay Rich is hurt, who do you think your #2 must be?

    ———–The Real Telling Signs————

Loper played LG #2 all night. If Barnes is LT #2 Loper may have passed Morris. Veldheer looks to be your starting Center.

Figurs is on scholarship. Two fumbles in prior games and a muff last night and a drop yet he’s still ahead of Miller who has 2 nice TDs. Why?

R Brown, Eugene and S Williams may make the team just because the #2 kick coverage guys stink. 2 TDs in 2 weeks.

S Brown is a turnover magnet. He stays.

We need a RB. Bennett is a dancer wearing pads. Cartright only looks good vs scrubs.

Veldheer is your starting Center. Unless he was injured last night Satele wouldn’t have played as a 2. If Vel was injured I doubt they’d risk Satele too so…get ready for the big V.

JLH is a solid WR – for now.

He asked if the gap in the AFC West was closing. He sad absolutely. But, he only mentioned Oakland. Said KC, eventually but not yet. Likes their coaching staff, but not what he’s seen of Cassell in preseason. Doesn’t know what is going on in Denver.

Then he said Oakland is legit. His exact words.
Said this is three years in a row with contract problems in SD. LT,WR and best pass rusher can’t be good for locker room chemistry in his opinion.

He’s been struggling this preseason, and after watching Hard Knocks, it’s easy to see why.

He showed up to a meeting unprepared, without some notebook. Everybody else had theirs. OC Brian Schottenheimer chastises him and sends him out to get it. He comes back all miffed.

Later, to retaliate, he goes into Schottenheimer’s office and draws black eyes and mustaches on his family photos with a sharpie. Seriously.

Then he changes the screen saver and wallpaper on his computer to an image of a gay horse pissing Rainbows. I’m not kidding.

  84. Raider O Says:

    Deli,

Let’s recap what you said and show me the logic in it pls!

Huff should continue to play S because the coachs think he can: the same coaches that played him at SS and put on the bench in 08 as a FS for his lack of tackling skills.
He had 4 INTs in 4 years, but you think he should continue to play S because the coaches think he can?!?

    Great Logic!!!

  87. RaiderRockstar Says:

    Operation Neutered Wolverine has begun.

    ***

    LOL!

  88. Dakota Says:

Huff can’t cover WRs and he can’t tackle RBs…therefore he should never be on the field as a starting S or CB.

He should only come in on obvious passing downs against teams that have good pass catching TEs…that is his ONLY strength.

  89. Raider Dell Says:

    Raider O

The coaches who played him at SS are gone, that was three years ago, and who else is there to play S. The coaches must trust the players, and right now the Raider Org has Huff as the penciled in S for the team. In time, maybe they start someone else, but he is it right now.

  90. Raider O Says:

    Dell,

Because he doesn’t need to have great/ good tackling skills as a CB!

On another note – As much as I like Mitchell he isn’t a FS. He is suited to play SS in run support. His coverage skills are probably the worst of our Safeties. He would have problems at FS in Oakland. He was drafted to play in the box SS. Tyvon Branch has turned into a top notch SS so peeps are trying to find excuses / ways to get MM on the field.

Huff is playing well at FS and S Brown has the look of a solid deep FS. Mitchell would look like Stu II. The last play of the game bore that out.

Surely he didn’t slide down the depth chart based on the 49r game, right?

  168. J Hill Says:

    Priest,

I just think it’s funny how you took such a strong position against the guy, and it turns out he’s going to start week 1.

Only thing that would make any sense is Veldheer was injured.

What I’m saying is he’s in the mix to start. Contrary to your battering of the kid saying he was nowhere near ready and for us to think so = we didn’t know what we were looking at.

I would think it’s pretty easy Priest, but I guess for you it’s not going to be. If the kid was as bad as you say he is, Cable would come right out and say Satele is the starter. You know, like he has for every other position that is NOT up for grabs.

  186. priesttj Says:

If the coaches think the kid can start at that position I’d be the last one to argue with them. I don’t see practice film they do. they see progress that I haven’t seen maybe who knows. I’m not going to be so presumptuous as tpo say he shouldn’t when they think he should. What I saw at the niner game was a kid I don’t think is ready yet. But hey that’s just one game players progress and win jobs in practice all the time. This would not be a first.

But I haven’t seen anything form him that says WOW this kid is a great player it may be even and they prefer him. From my point of view I didn’t see that.

All good though. Like you said, a bit premature. We can table this until Monday.

I’m not changing my personal stance at all brotha so don’t get it twisted I say no.

I mean, if you consider his contract situation, he can pretty much go anywhere since Seattle is picking up the tab for this year (to make up the difference to 7 mill). As fans, we see the potential in our team but will TJ? Then again, maybe we just need Davis to fly him out, roll out the red carpet, and lay on that Raider charm!

Posted by Mike Florio on September 3, 2010 8:10 PM ET
After successfully getting the Bengals to bring Batman to town, Bengals receiver Chad Ochocinco has his sights set on a reunion with T.J. Houshmandzadeh, who is expected to be cut by the Seahawks if he’s not traded.

Said Ochocinco on his Twitter page: “Disturbing news, i cant even fathom the thought of a reciever the caliber of Housh being traded let alone released, i will be lobbying heavy.”

Ochocinco attributes his success to playing across from Houshmandzadeh. “I’d be happy to have him back,” Ochocinco said.

Chad also opted to wax a little philosophically on the situation: “Situations like this is what scares me about the business side of the NFL which is why i play this game the way i do,having FUN, unbelievably.”

Indeed, one of those receivers for whom Chad lobbies eventually could be the receiver that takes his roster spot

A trade of Huff (a starter) should be for a decent draft pick or two mid-round picks. Either that or a starter or potential starter like RB M Barber, RB B Jacobs, C Hartwig etc… Wouldn’t trade for a guy who’s getting cut anyway (TJ for instance).

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 3, 2010 8:52 PM ET
Matt Leinart may not want to be a backup in New York (or anywhere else), but Sage Rosenfels will gladly take a ticket out of Minnesota.

Alex Marvez of FOXSports.com reports that Rosenfels is headed to the Giants to be Eli Manning’s backup quarterback. Compensation is unclear. (UPDATE: It’s a conditional draft pick.)

This knocks Rhett Bomar to third string. We thought Bomar generally handled himself well in the preseason, but he wasn’t ready for the promotion.

With Rosenfels in New York, Joe Webb should safely make the Vikings roster as the team’s No. 3 quarterback behind Brett Favre and Tarvaris Jackson. Webb is the only Vikings quarterback that has a contract past 2010.

I know I’m probably gonna catch grief for this, but I would be geeked if Al could lure Revis to come here and play opposite Nnamdi.

In the “Passing Oriented” league of today, Teams would never be able to pass the ball against us anymore. They would have to become completely one dimensional and rely on the running game.

If they did try to drop back to pass the ball, imagine all the coverage sacks that our D-line would accumulate.

Al Davis has always been about getting the best players, and we all know how much he wants to create a new millenium version of
    Lester Hayes and Mike Haynes.

If anybody could do it, Big Al could. If he could spend that contract on Deangelo Hall, he could do it for Revis.

This move goes along with many other star players in the league as the preseason comes to an end and the real season approaches.

Johnson has been talking a big game coming into the season, making MVP predictions and 2,500 yard guarantees.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reports that Hartwig has been given permission to talk to other teams about a trade. Although Schefter doesn’t list any possibilities, we do know that Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Oakland and Philadelphia could all be in the market.

Well Nnamdi’s still with the Raiders and happy, while Revis feels betrayed by the Jets and is on his way out of NY.

Perhaps Nnamdi’s befriending of Revis last season was the first step of a plan to unite the two here in Oakland, knowing that Nnamdi had just gotten his mega contract, and Al Davis is one of the few owners who will actually be willing to pay the kind of money that Revis wants.

Cards, Leinart continue their game of chicken
Posted by Mike Florio on September 3, 2010 7:30 PM ET
The Cardinals would like to get something, anything in return for 2006 first-round pick Matt Leinart. And by all appearances the Cardinals don’t want to cut him loose, since doing so would likely result in Leinart making a beeline for Pete Carroll and his Seahawks.

So with the Cardinals expressly giving Leinart permission to seek his own trade and Leinart opting not to do so because he thinks staying put is his best chance of starting in 2010, coach Ken Whisenhunt has taken things up a notch.

Per Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic, Whisenhunt summarized the key question on Friday: “[C]an he survive in the role as a No. 2 on this team? And that’s really what the decision is about.”

On the surface, it’s an unusual question, given that Leinart has survived in that role for the last two seasons behind Kurt Warner. But Derek Anderson is a far cry from Kurt Warner, and the fact that Leinart can’t beat out a guy who flamed out as the Browns’ starter surely makes it much harder for Leinart to accept his role.

The fact that he thinks staying in Arizona gives him the best chance to start proves it.

Either way, the only way the Cardinals will keep Leinart is if they decide to carry four quarterbacks. Rookies Max Hall and John Skelton have looked good so far, and the Cardinals likely wouldn’t be able to sneak one of them through to the practice squad. And given the franchise’s historical luck, the guy they’d cut would end up being the next Kurt Warner, and the guy they keep would end up being the next Matt Leinart.

For now, we’re sticking with our prediction that the Cardinals will cut Leinart and that he’ll sign with the Seahawks within hours thereafter

Sure, it might not be Moss/Welker or Austin/Williams/Bryant, but those guys can get the job done. The real question mark in Chicago is their defensive back seven and their offensive line.

I would personnaly take at least half the leagues wideout groups over the Bears. They really aren’t anything special. If they do put up #’s it will be for 2 reasons, 1) Mike Martz’s scheme 2) the bears stink and will probaly be behind in a lot of games and have to throw the ball a lot. Agreed, except I wouldn’t get Stevie Brown out there just yet. (yes he looked good in preseason). I do look foward to seeing more MM34, I’m cool W/ Routt starting, (leave Tyvon at safety). Remember Nnamdi is supposed to cover the #1 wideout this year. Trade Huff!!

  368. HairyBush Says:

I was saying earlier that people made CJ37 sound so great but that was because he was replacing a loser like Deangelo Hall. It’s easy to look good when you replace trash. (take notice J. Campbell and Grads replacing Jameatloaf) Not that they are bad but compared to who they are replacing they look like the second coming. Just a matter of perspective.

  374. TheyCallMeAssassin Says:

Personally, I was always surprised by Chris Johnson’s performance. I never thought of him as a long-term solution, mostly because his “breakout year” happened when we was already an 8-year veteran. It was only a matter of time before his play declined, especially considering that he plays across from Nnamdi so he’s targeted a ridiculous amount.

Maybe his injury slowed him down a little and he was just off his game last night, but it was only a matter of time before the Raiders had to find a long-term answer at CB anyway.

Hopefully the light really did switch on for Routt this season. I’ll believe it when I see it in the regular season. If not, with any luck Walter McFadden can step up.

  375. RaiderRetribution Says:

To those who do not think adding revis would add a victory or two to the Raiders win totals; all the experts, prognosticators not just esp, but NFL network analysists as well say the difference in the Jets resigning Revis or not is a key factor in them reaching the Super Bowl.

Winning that one AFC championship game will be a lot more diificult than the Raiders going 4-2 over 3-3 in their AFC west.

I know its just wishful thinking, but yes I would like to see revis come to the Raiders, even if we have to give up our 1st round pick in 2012.

as for Huff for Barber trade scenario, that would be excellent news, except for the fact I drafted neither Finley or Barber, or McFadden for that matter, and I was just brainstorming possible trades earlier that made sense for both teams. I still think Bush could be 1000 yd rusher as long as he stays in shape while he is out.

  376. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

Trading Huff too now. Man, those draft picks from 2005 through 2009 were really bad….

Anyway, I think you keep Huff at this point. He’s getting the job done and is not a liability. The risk in my opinion would be moving a successfull strong safety in Tyvon Branch to a new position this late in the season and putting in Mike Mitchell to start at SS.

Sure, Mitchell may ring up a hit or two…but he’s going to get abused in the passing game.

Too late for this late trade B.S. Safety is not the issue on this team right now.

Its the FREEKIN run defense and the front 7. The Safety is not the key cog in the run defense..its the front 7.

But Al DAvis and Oakland fans in general don’t get that concept. Hence the blistering criticism of Huff for missing a tackle 30 yards down field…and dreams of Revis and Asomugha in the backfield.

Until the Raiders stop with this “back 7″ mentality..and realize the game is won up front..they will continue to lose and lose often.

Stop looking for ESPN highlights! That’s NOT where the game is won!

  377. RaiderRetribution Says:

Raiders could have for an ofeensive line:

    LT-Barnes LG-Gallery C-Mawae RG-Mankins RT-Gaither

Bench: Vehldeer LT/C, Campbell RG/RT, Henderson LT & Satele C and what they could learn from the starting five would solidify the Raiders for years to come.

Now thats an offensive line that could take a team to the playoffs.

  378. ArmChair GM Says:

Fix the O-line, win the division. The problem on defense is that the Raiders aren’t inserting that big run clogger in the front 4 on run plays.

Kelly and Seymour are good, but you need that run clogger to stop the run.

When we were good in our division at the beginning of the decade we had big John Parella, Sam Adams, and Ted Washington on our front defensive line.

    What happened to that?

Until Big Al and Cable stop screwing around, and get us some bruisers up front, we will keep having the same problems.

  379. RaiderRetribution Says:

34mm would play FS, Branch would remain at SS if Huff gets traded and we would have the steal of the seventh round, S. Brown as backup.

  380. RaiderRetribution Says:

We stopped the run when we had lean muscle on the line, like Seymour.. aka Howie Long & Co.

Teams ran over Adams and Washington alot.

This year with both Kelly and Seymour play DT on the inside (Seymour’s more natural and productive position) we will stop the run.

  381. Kirk Says:

Mitchell is not going to get abused in the passing game.

He is going to do the abusing.

Opposition wide receivers are going to be terrified of catching passes.

  382. RaiderRetribution Says:

There’s also Brandon Jacobs who is a little unhappy playing second string, I know this is a reach, but I’m sure Giants would love to unload his contract now.

  383. ArmChair GM Says:

Seymour should be paired up with John Henderson. Stopping the run is his specialty. Kelly is improved this year, but I think Henderson and Seymour should be in there on run plays.

  384. Raider O Says:

-Mitchell & Branch at Ss, and Brown is a good bakup.
-Trade Huff, IF he can’t play CB, but give him a chance to showcase his talents there. Damn you Cable. I’m sick of that Fat Monkey.
-keep TH, and let him play on passing downs.
-we are trying Barns at LT, but we are not giving the 2 OT rookies a chance to show what they can do at that position. Both played LT at college, we are trying one at C, and the other player at G. Damn you Fat Monkey!

    Fire the Fat Monkey!!!

  385. RaiderRockstar Says:

Who says Branch is playing FS if Huff is traded?

    FS: Eugene, Brown
    SS: Branch, Mitchell

Jerry Mac reported that when Huff was off the field during camp Mitch was the single deep safety and wasn’t very impressive

as of right this second Huff is our ONLY option to play centerfield

However, he’s due over $5 million this year and can void his contract next season. As a business decision, do you get something in return while you still can? I think it would come down to the compensation (what we get in return)

  386. Raider O Says:

WRs will fear Mitchell! Print that!
    Branch loves contact too.

I’m not sold on Routt & CJ, but I think McFadden can be great. I hope Ware can develop faster.

  387. RaiderRockstar Says:

why don’t we trade Higgins, Huff & McFadden to a team like Indy or New England?

then you guys get your wish and scrubs like Nick Miller, Hiram Eugene & Rock Cartwright can run rampant on the roster …

funny – I don’t see many people campaigning for Sam Williams, too religious?

Lane Kiffin His Typical Villainous Self Right Off the Bat 9/03/2010 3:20 AM ET By Clay Travis
If you ever doubted how quickly the world of college football can change, Lane Kiffin is the perfect test case. Two years ago, hardly any college football fans outside of the hardest core USC fan in Los Angeles had any opinion of Lane Kiffin at all. Twenty months later, he’s the most hated man in college football. The man with the smirk heard ’round the world. Ever wonder what Johnny from “Karate Kid” would look like if he’d grown up to coach football?

    Lane Kiffin is the answer.

Not only is Kiffin the most hated man in college football, he doesn’t even have a rival for the second-most hated. Honestly, can you even name the second-most hated entity in college football? Maybe the NCAA? The BCS? That’s how hated Lane Kiffin is, the NCAA and the BCS might have a higher favorability rating. Even ESPN, the network that created the monster that is Lane Kiffin, seems a bit taken aback by the character they’ve created. Most of the offseason they’ve attempted to create a kinder, gentler Lane, rehabilitate his image after the drubbing it took in 13 months in Knoxville.
That’s the only explanation for why sideline reporter Shelley Smith began the Hawaii game by saying: “Everything Lane Kiffin does is calculated.” Right, and Tiger Woods wanted to get busted with his mistresses, too.
Lane Kiffin coaches football like he’s playing a video game. He gives press conferences like he’s on X-Box live. How infuriating was Lane Kiffin in his first year as Tennessee’s head coach? He could make SEC Commissioner Mike Slive, one of the nicest guys on the planet, boil with rage. Why? Because Kiffin doesn’t care about anything or anyone that came before him, anything or anyone that exists around him. No matter how much he tries, Kiffin can’t shield the disrespect that he has for his opponents. He coaches with a palpable arrogance, a belief that he’s God’s gift to the game.
Maybe it comes from Kiffin never having had to work his way up the coaching ranks, so he doesn’t have any ability to project what it might be like to not have one of the best jobs. Maybe it’s something that’s just unique to his personality. Maybe it’s just being 35. Maybe it’s having a dad who didn’t spend enough time with him when he was growing up.
No matter what, Kiffin’s an egocentric enigma. For instance, if I told you that only one coach in America was going to go for two the first three times his team scored a touchdown in the opening week of the season, wouldn’t you have known it was going to be Lane Kiffin without even having to watch the games?
    Of course you would have.
Somehow, some way, Lane Kiffin, a college football villain so delectable we couldn’t create him if we tried, is going to find a way to do something ignoble. That’s why I was willing to stay up until 2 a.m. Central Time when Kiffin took his show outside the continental United States for the first game of his USC tenure. Here were 10 observations from the game.

    1. Mark Jones tries to give Bob Davie a fist pound to open up the telecast.

Davie goes with an open-handed palm touch in response.

It will be the first of many missed signals in Thursday night/Friday morning’s broadcast.

If you had to sum up Bob Davie’s life in one image without using any words, this would probably be as good an image as any to choose. Everything Davie does is just a bit off. From the decision to use all three buttons on his polo — is there a draft in the Hawaiian press box? — to his inability to ever do anything halfway. Davie gushes about every head coach. Perhaps because, to Bob Davie, every coach he watches looks pretty impressive.

Davie is a modest man, with much to be modest about.

    2. Lane Kiffin goes for two on his first touchdown.

Of course, he does. You can’t even make this up. It’s the perfect thing for Lane Kiffin to decide to do. Something that no one else would attempt, an oddly dismissive gesture that has no real substance behind it. What message, exactly, is being sent by this decision? Later Kiffin will probably say something about how this move was designed to show his team they would never quit.
Because, clearly, everyone who kicks extra points is quitting.
ESPN misses this two-point conversion attempt because even the network is shocked by the diabolical evil that is Lane Kiffin.

    3. I keep expecting to see Lane Kiffin tweeting insults to Urban Meyer on the sideline.
You know this is happening too, don’t you? At halftime of one of USC’s games Lane Kiffin is going to criticize the officiating on Twitter.
I’m so sure of this I wish I could place a prop bet in Las Vegas.

    4. Hawaii appears to be going with my fourth grade PE offense: go long on every play.
But it bounces back to cut the lead to 6-3 midway through the first quarter.
Amazingly, by sticking with the go long on every play offense, eventually they begin to carve massive chunks of yardage out of the USC defense.

    5. ESPN lauds Kiffin for having his scout team perform the Hawaiian dance.

Perhaps this time spent performing the Hawaiian dance could have been spent on some more rudimentary tactics. Such as, I don’t know, tackling.

Or constructing a defensive game plan?

    6. Shelley Smith reports there are no celebrities on the USC sideline.

Then at halftime, just after a blown call that costs Hawaii a touchdown, she fails to ask Kiffin the only question worth asking: why have you been going for two? Instead she asks Kiffin: “What have they figured out?”

And Lane Kiffin, God bless him, responds: “Nothing. They figured out that we hit the guy late.”

Those 16 points — which should have been 20 — were clearly a calculated part of the master plan.

    7. Matt Barkley is good, really good.

He’s going to keep Lane Kiffin from getting fired for two years. Then he’s going to go pro and Lane Kiffin will be fired the next season. Go ahead and write this down.

    That’s the gospel truth.

In the meantime, Barkley will become the next in a storied line of USC quarterbacks to receive a Heisman invitation to New York. He throws for five touchdowns against Hawaii’s porous defense.

    It could have been 10.

    8. The other story from the game is this: USC’s secondary is going to get roasted in the Pac-10 this year.

Actually, even UVa might roast it next week.

Having watched him for one season at Tennessee, I think this much is also clear: Monte Kiffin’s defensive guru status doesn’t translate as well on the collegiate level.
Not with limited college practice hours anyway.
Hawaii’s offense moves the ball at will against USC. Bryant Moniz, its quarterback, looked an awful lot like running back Dexter McCluster from Ole Miss. The Monte Kiffin defense had no answer until he’s knocked out of the game with a hit of borderline legality in the latter part of the third quarter.
And then once Hawaii brought in its third string quarterback, the Monte Kiffin defense continued to get lit up. How bad was it? Hawaii put up 613 total yards of offense, including 459 through the air.

It got so bad I realized that Monte was never shown on television all night. Was he even there? Was it past his bedtime? Because this looked an awful lot like an Ed Orgeron gameplan.

By which, of course, I mean there was no gameplan.

    9. The next-to-last USC touchdown of the night? Lane Kiffin’s Trojans line up to attempt, what else, a two-point conversion.

Backup quarterback Mitch Mustain is successful rushing the ball in for the conversion and the Trojans are right back where they would have been if they’d simply kicked the extra points all night long.

    42 points.

    10. From here both teams duel well into the night, until just about 3 in the morning Eastern Time, a four-hour slugfest when the score ends 49-36.

As he jogs off the field, Lane Kiffin, a legend in his own mind, has run his career head coaching record to 13-21.

And the first tremors of uncertainty are racing along the USC fan fault line. Uh oh, they’re thinking.

Get used to it, say fans from back in the Volunteer state.

sure it’s nice to have a safety that can knock somebody’s head off, but a safety that can’t cover is like a O-Lineman that can’t block – that should be his bread & butter imo

Huff takes the blame for a couple long preseason runs that could have been prevented up front by Bryant, McClain, Scott and a few others.

Against Seattle 2 of those guys sat and Scott played DE. result? stout run defense! coincidence?

Lane Kiffin Scandal Coming: Booze, Ladies, Car Wrecks, NCAA Violations

Big Ten Divisions: Winners and Losers
100 Reasons to Be Excited For The Season
Hell may have no wrath like a woman’s scorn, but fan wrath is right up there with it. And now angry fans no longer feel the need to try and protect the King Rat and his court.
Stories and photos are coming out, such as the one above showing Lane Kiffin out drinking with Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, and Kiffin’s brother-in-law David Reaves at a local Knoxville bar, where witnesses say Kiffin was getting cozy with the ladies.
There is also a hushed up story of a car allegedly wrecked by Kiffin, under the influence, with some young ladies in the car. Now that may become public, as well.
Allegedly, Lane Kiffin had female co-eds in a rental car loaned to him through the UT program. Lane Kiffin crashed the car, while possibly intoxicated, and left the scene of the accident by scurrying off with a neighbor who came to his rescue—leaving the ladies to take the fall.
The story goes on to say that someone dropped the loaner car off, which suffered extensive damage. Now the Knoxville car dealership (Lexus) wants their money, since Kiffin plans on jumping ship and neither he nor the school has paid up.
What do you want to bet that car gets magically fixed by Kiffin to help keep it quiet? The problem is that TMZ, a television gossip show, is on the scene in Knoxville and is spreading cash around to anyone with pictures, stories, and proof.
Supposedly, they are building up a whole show’s worth of interviews and scandal.
And before it’s over, the NCAA may have the last word.
Lane Kiffin allegedly lied before heading off to his destination in Los Angeles, by stating that he will not recruit the players that go to UT unless they call him. The snafu is that his recruiter, Ed Orgeron, slipped up and stated to reporters that they initiated many cell phone calls to some of the 26 Tennessee recruits that they both received commitments from. It has also been stated that Kiffin’s recruiter also told players not to attend spring classes for the week. In addition, students were also offered USC scholarships.
Now the NCAA has come back with their rules stating that a student-athlete that is currently enrolled in one school and then transfers to another must sit out for a year before they will be eligible to compete, and that an institution cannot contact a student-athlete without the permission of the current institution.
Uh oh! These would be penalties that wouldn’t affect Tennessee, but would directly affect Kiffin and USC. Kiffin was, in effect, already the head coach of USC at the time these calls were made by his recruiting coordinator, who had just been named to the USC staff, as well.
The school was paying for the cell phones in question, and supposedly, they already have proof from the call records and testimony of athletes to prove this wrong doing did take place.
So not only may USC have hired a scummy coach, they could have bought themselves more NCAA problems, as well. Boy, talk about karma.
TMZ is tracking down other “ladies” who are willing to come forward and tell all for the man who left them just as high and dry. This could be a fun offseason after all, and it couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

    ……………………………………………….

very true raccoon, but i like the way he went up for balls. bad throws or not.

on a side note i love how everybody in here sees one thing and completely runs with it.

EXAMPLE 1: trevor scott plays one game at end to keep him used to playing on passing downs, and now every1 says he’s a terrible lb and we need to get him outta here? I’m truly embarrassed for the bloggers who said that. he will be one of our most important defenders this yr.

EXAMPLE2: One tiny little spat of michael huff getting traded comes out, and boom hes awful and needs to split town. what makes me laugh even more is the reasoning that stevie brown makes him expandable due to the fact that hes made a couple plays against 3rd and 4th stringers. come on fellas, youre better than that. now i will admit getting something for huff in his last yr makes sense, considering we have mitchell and branch for the next handful of years. but considering his salary as the 7th pick, we’d be lucky to get much for him. HOWEVER, if im al i would be on the phone with ozzie newsome. the ravens secondary is in terrible shape, such bad of shape that they must be willing to part with something of value to help it out. thats where jared gaither comes into the picture, he would help us tremendously. maybe we throw howard in there as well, but not much else. That addition would pump me up, bc we could then slide walker back inside to rg where he performed admirably last season. carlisle is a piss poor starting lineman.

  456. Hobs Gnarly Says:

    wow, mistabrownlover

when i said that i am not sure campbell would have done the same thing that is what i meant. if you can’t comprehend what you read then go back to first grade. i prefer grads to campbell, didn’t you prefer russell to grads? you have no credibiltiy plain and simple. you think if you start name calling, which obviously worked well for you in first grade when you were supposed to be learning to read, people will back down from you. it’s a purely hypothetical question which we will never know the answer to, which is why it is my opinion. so no need to get your panties in an uproar.

i don’t think huff is crap and mm hasn’t done anything in the nfl, so he is an unproven commodity, but being al’s boy, he obviously is the chosen one. i have to remember to spell things out i guess specifically for you that every safety we have had has not worked well in al’s defensive scheme.

  461. Bob Marley Says:

Lots of trade-pickup ideas floating around…

I’d like to keep Huff, he’s a decent player but…

I’d have to take a hard look at both Roy Williams and Tashard Choice.

RW would be a huge gamble, major talent who just can’t get it done, he’s always an injury risk but as the top dog in Detroit he did have a couple of nice seasons, maybe it happens for him here, on the fence about him.

Tashard Choice, this kid is a nice player, not a lot of wear in is tires and has a nice all-around game, I think the Cowboys would be crazy to trade him since Felix and Barber are injury prone and this guy has gotten the job done when filling in, I’d give up Huff for him because then we’d be set at RB.

Cuts….TJ Housh, the familiarity with Hue Jackson is a plus and he’d be the kind of mentor we need for the kids, no longer a Pro Bowler but he would definitely help, plenty of teams would want him, he’s not coming here imo.

I’ve watched Chocie play, he seems like the real deal, maybe not a superstar but certainly an above average NFL RB….I guess you’re right that it’s weird to shop the guy around but Dallas has a major weakness at the Safety position, they want Super Bowl this year and they may be willing to mortgage the future for a shot, plus Jerry Jones does not always make the best decisions, as we all know.
