Did Brown get cut to save Mitchell?
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, September 4th, 2010 at 6:38 pm in Oakland Raiders.
I’m not familiar with Andy Slater or South Florida radio, but if Stevie Brown is the Raiders final cut and Quinton Groves is the starting weak side linebacker, then it’s possible he knows someone in within the walls of 1220 Harbor Bay Parkway.
Slater is a talk show host on on 640 WTFL Florida. He began tweeting this morning that coaches were lobbying to cut safety Mike Mitchell, who was a controversial second-round draft pick out of Ohio last year, and that they were lobbying in favor of Brown, the seventh-round pick out of Michigan.
According to his biography on the radio station Web site, “Andy also worked for Al Davis and the Oakland Raiders organization. Slater had the unique privilege of being the tech who prepared the breakdown of NFL game film and present it to players and coaches during their meetings . At an early age Andy Slater went where the rest of media could not go….deep inside.
Both Brown and Mitchell were on the field when the Raiders practiced today. Brown even spoke to the media about making the 53-man roster.
The Raiders still had one move to make but have declined to make an announcement until the list has gone through league channels.
Here is a list of tweets from the Twitter page AndySlater on Twitter which started hours ago:
– allblacklouie they don’t believe he’s that good… and also other factors… trade is possible, but prob. unlikely from AD now.
– @allblacklouie Brown has to clear waivers. Can’t say it enough how much everyone in org. wants Mitchell gone. AD final say. about 2 hours ago via web in reply to allblacklouie
– Starting LBs will be Wimbley, McClain, Groves about 2 hours ago via web
– Brown gone. RT @allblacklouie Hey @AndySlater If we don’t keep 5 safeties, it will be Hiram Eugene who’s cut not Brown or Mitchell about 3 hours ago via web
– Cutting Stevie Brown wasn’t a decision many in the organization are happy with. Seems like AD didn’t want the bad PR cutting Mitchell about 3 hours ago via web
– The Raiders have officially cut Stevie Brown. He is the final cut. Mike Mitchell stays. about 3 hours ago via web
– Team is calling around checking for interest in Mike Mitchell before 6:00pm ET for a late rd. pick.
about 5 hours ago via web
– Coaches are trying their best to have Stevie Brown make team and not Mitchell… We’ll find out what Al Davis decided shortly. about 5 hours ago via web
– Kenzel_D I hear ya… Coaches want Brown, not Mitchell. Let’s see if it sticks after practice. about 7 hours ago via web in reply to Kenzel_D
– LB Travis Goethel has made the active roster. DT Desmond Bryant has made the active roster.
about 7 hours ago via web
– Depsite reports, the Raiders are not keeping 5 safeties. As I stated prior, one will be cut after practice. Mitchell or Brown about 7 hours ago via web
– @GdaRAIDER408 then don’t pay attention. If you’ve been following me for two years on Raiders news, I let my track record speak for itself. about 7 hours ago via web in reply to GdaRAIDER408
– If Raiders release Mitchell, it’s obviously bad PR. 2nd rounder from ‘09, very questionable in first place. What will Al do….. about 7 hours ago via web
– Let me be clear, for those tweeting me on Mitchell/Raiders, coaches do NOT want him. Addition by subtraction. Still no announcement
about 7 hours ago via web.
– If Al does overturn the decision to cut Mike Mitchell, it was SOLELY be b/c it doesn’t look good. Bad PR. Raiders coaches don’t want him. about 8 hours ago via web
– Al Davis is going to have the final word on Mike Mitchell. Right now he is cut… Will Al overturn it? Find out shortly. #raiders about 8 hours ago via web
– Oakland Raiders cuts should be coming shortly… Last minute decision making with a few players going on right now #nfl about 9 hours ago via web

Ed Reed on PUP list
September 4th, 2010 at 6:42 pm
WOW!
September 4th, 2010 at 6:42 pm
How much trade value do these safeties have with Ed Reed not able to go right now?
September 4th, 2010 at 6:43 pm
Interesting.
Is it all on the field stuff or is he a bad locker room guy?
I have never heard of the latter.

September 4th, 2010 at 6:46 pm
What are the other issues with MM34.
Seems like a bible-thumping guy according to this twitter, who is always smiling and happy for teammates on the sidelines.

Andy Slater is the guy who posts as WDR (Willis Da Raider) on Raiderfans.net, where the site owner is a freelance photographer who often takes photos of Raiders games, and they use Raiderfans.net to charge people for “inside info” on the Raiders which comes thru Andy Slater and whoever the fox in the hole is in Alameda that he gets info from.

Eugene got a 2nd round tender. Cutting one or the other is not going to look good.

Sam Hurd bets on himself and wins
According to Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys told wide receiver Sam Hurd that they could only guarantee his roster spot if he took a pay cut from his $1.759 million salary.
Full of confidence that he has value elsewhere, Hurd told them no thanks.
And the Cowboys kept him anyway.
The story reminds us of the scene in last week’s Hard Knocks where Jets quarterback Kellen Clemens accepts a pay cut to keep his roster spot. It’s a high stakes game of poker and this time Hurd won, successfully calling the Cowboys’ bluff.
Hurd enjoyed a fine Saturday, but many other Cowboys weren’t so lucky. Fourth and Long winner Jesse Holley was among those released by the team. Cornerback Cletis Gordon also surprisingly got the boot.
The team kept only two tight ends and three cornerbacks, indicating they aren’t done making moves. So maybe Hurd shouldn’t spend that money just yet.with Michael Huff on the trade block there might be some truth to the Marion Barber trade after all.

If the Raiders cut Stevie Brown and start Groves at OLB, Slater will look pretty smart now won’t he?
September 4th, 2010 at 6:51 pm
No way in Hell Mike Mitchell should get cut. He is one of their best DBs, one of the best tacklers on the entire defensive unit.
That would be the dumbest move since letting Marcus Allen go to KC, Stabler going to Houston, and Casper going to another team.
Brown completely outplayed Eugene. Eugene’s special teams was nothing to brag about either.

Slaters’ last tweet:
@knightTEK From what I know, yes, Mitchell is gone. Doubt Al Davis will step in and change it in this case.

Stevie seemed like a guy who just had “it”.
Maybe they think Mitchell just doesn’t.
I always hate it when a guys draft position keeps him around, rather than keep the best player.
That being said, I have the opinion that Mitchell is going to be a good safety.
Who knows how accurate this guys info is.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:53 pm
Groves starting over Scott, I don’t see that happening either.

This is a good example of why MM is useful to have…

WHYYYYYY MY BROMANCE WITH STEVIE BROWN CAN NOT BE BROKEN THIS EASILY
September 4th, 2010 at 6:54 pm
The only thing that does not makes sense with this ‘info’ is that MM played a lot of first team nickel. If the coaches were not high on him, would they have done this. I will say this – If MM gets cut and this story comes true, you will have to give AD a TON of credit for listening to his staff…..In this staff I trust.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:55 pm
MM34 had his best preseason moment blowing up Forsett the other night.
Wonder why the coaches hate him so much, or do they just love Stevie?
Either way, I am pretty sure there is at least a tad bit of truth from this guy. We know how this organization works, the guy doing the cut-ups might not more than the Head Coach.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:56 pm
Mitchell laid Seahawks reciever out, with a clean hit.
raider coaches are always talking about improving their tackling.
Raiders cut Mitchell the coaching staff doesn’t give a damn about tackling.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:57 pm
Raiders transactions list. Stevie Brown CUT!
September 4th, 2010 at 6:57 pm
I don’t see why Eugene is the one who survives above Brown or Mitchell.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:57 pm
If Stevie Brown goes to another AFC West team I will hate Eugene even more than I do now, which is a lot.

brown’s a goner
September 4th, 2010 at 6:57 pm
Stevie Brown should remain on the roster as well he covers and tackles, he is a seventh round steal.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:58 pm
Stevie Brown was a college LB who was really drafted to play ST’s. This kid is a heady kid who just happens to make plays. Over and over again.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:58 pm
Guess I should have never got that Stevie Brown Tattoo
September 4th, 2010 at 6:58 pm
Also why just cut Mitchell when we can easily get at least a 5th for him.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:59 pm
One hit does not necessarily make one the Safety to keep.
September 4th, 2010 at 6:59 pm
Tough call. MM has become somewhat of a fan fav. But Stevie has shown promise and made more plays than MM has this preseason. decisions decisions…
The only problem I see here is if AD is holding on to MM solely because of image. Going against what the coaches want, once again, and doing something that could derail whatever good chemistry this team had going. There always has to be drama in Oakland.
No need to say this, but the sensible move would be to keep them both and letting Eugene go.

This is totally a guess….BUT, I usually see Mitchell jawing at the other team after a play, no matter how small. Looks really bush league on TV, reminded me of James Trapp. Maybe he crosses the line b/t being fired up and being an ass.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:01 pm
Now im pissed off with the coaches and Al.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:03 pm
They cut Brown, not on the active roster..
September 4th, 2010 at 7:05 pm
Im out yall
September 4th, 2010 at 7:07 pm
MM should have taken a cue from George Atkinston….who once told me he would often quietly invite receivers to come into the dark zone and visit him and Jack. He said they usually didn’t come back with much strong intention of catching a pass. Sammy White was one of them.
MM needs to learn to “speak softly and carry a big stick”.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:08 pm
Sorry I typo’s on GA’s last name….
September 4th, 2010 at 7:11 pm
GG….
Story is…..coaches wanted to cut Mitchell and Al wanted to cut Brown. So which are you mad at???? Can’t be both, can it ??? Unless….like a lot of us….you’re upset with both cuz they didn’t cut Eugene.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:14 pm
Yeah i know what the story is, and im saying im upset with both coaches/Al that Eugene makes the roster.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:15 pm
Mitchell was kept just b/c Al doesn’t want Maylock and Co to say, “told you.” Of course, now Al looks double bad b/c he is an NFL owner and needs to be above that.
MM play has not been good. Oh yeah his hit was fun but he lost the Sea game if a penalty didn’t save him. SFs passing TD he was standing behind the WR in the endzone covering nothing. He can’t cover. That’s not a good DB.
Hope Brown makes it to the practice squad.
First bad move of 2010. Not a big deal but disappointing.
September 4th, 2010 at 7:49 pm
not stevie brown??
September 4th, 2010 at 8:16 pm
Give me a break, this clown is looking for his 3 minutes of fame. “the coaches want this and the coaches do not want that” lol.
“Des Bryant makes the team”, Des Bryant was always going to make the team idiot. How do you pawn this garbage off as News? Hiram Eugene would have went before Mitchell. And this guy talks “track record”, you have to be joking lol.
September 4th, 2010 at 10:52 pm
how in the world is hiram still on this team he couldnt tackle betty white if his life depended on it
