Final tally on roster forecast

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, September 4th, 2010 at 10:12 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Here’s how I fared in assessing the Raiders roster before the Seahawks game:

All 38 players I proclaimed as “locked in” made the roster.

Quarterbacks (3) _ Jason Campbell, Bruce Gradkowski, Kyle Boller.

Running backs (3)_Michael Bush, Darren McFadden, Marcel Reece.

Wide receivers (4)_Darrius Heyward-Bey, Louis Murphy, Chaz Schilens, Jacoby Ford.

Tight ends (2)_Zach Miller, Brandon Myers.

Offensive line (7)_Mario Henderson, Robert Gallery, Samson Satele, Cooper Carlisle, Langston Walker, Jared Veldheer, Bruce Campbell.

Defensive line (5)_Matt Shaughnessy, Tommy Kelly, Richard Seymour, Lamarr Houston, Desmond Bryant.

Linebackers (4)_Kamerion Wimbley, Rolando McClain, Trevor Scott, Travis Goethel.

Defensive backs (7)_Nnamdi Asomugha, Chris Johnson, Stanford Routt, Tyvon Branch, Michael Huff, Mike Mitchell, Walter McFadden.

Specialists (3)_Shane Lechler, Sebastian Janikowski, Jon Condo.

Seven players of the nine players I said had a “good chance to make it” were on the roster:

RB Rock Cartwright
RB Michael Bennett
OT Erik Pears
G-T Khalif Barnes
DT John Henderson
LB Ricky Brown
CB Jeremy Ware

The two in this category I missed on were defensive end Jay Richardson and safety Stevie Brown.

Seven of the 14 players I assessed as “on the bubble” are on the roster:

WR Johnnie Lee Higgins
WR Nick Miller
WR Yamon Figurs
LB Thomas Howard
LB Quentin Groves
LB Sam Williams
S Hiram Eugene

The seven “bubble” players who did not make it were C-G Chris Morris, FB Manase Tonga, WR Todd Watkins, TE John Owens, DT William Joseph, DE Chris Cooper and S Jerome Boyd.

Twelve of the 13 players I identified as “waiting for release” were cut. The lone survivor was guard/tackle Daniel Loper, who I vow to find out more about in the near future.

Here’s what coach Tom Cable said Saturday regarding Loper when asked if Morris’ release was hastened by Jared Veldheer’s promotion to starting center:

“I think a little bit, but more importantly, both of the young guys being able to contribute, and Dan Loper I think has just steadily improved and certainly showed well the other night.”

The dozen who indeed were let go were PK Swayze Waters, QB Colt Brennan. WR Shaun Bodiford, OL Alex Parsons, OL Brandon Rodd, DL Greyson Gunheim, DL Kellen Heard, DL Alex Daniels, LB David Nixon, LB Slade Norris, CB Joe Porter and CB Joey Thomas

To me it made little sense keeping Boller over Brennan. The 3rd QB spot should be a developmental slot. Boller as the 3rd. They must really have a lot of confidence in the offensive line?!?

Michael Huff is still here because he’s the best option to play that “center field” safety position.

YOu guys are shocked that Figures made the team? What was his 40x again? LOL

So much for seeing Mitchell on the field as a starter anytime soon. Big hitter but can’t cover at all. The game is not won based on ESPN highlights. 2nd round pick? LOL

Glad to see Big John Henderson on the roster! Good to see the RAiders put focus on the less glamourous run defense. ESPN highlights aren’t everything! The most important keep on that defense of any of the “bubble” players. Glad to see the Raiders didn’t lose their mind. I am sure that giving up 160yds per game on the ground helped Henderson’s cause. He will help the run defense and be an asset to McClain.

Either Veldheer is really good..or Satele is absolutely terrible! and if he’s that bad….should he even be on the roster…probably should take a look at the kid Center from Pittsburgh.

Nick Miller made the squad? Well, let’s see what he’s got.

BTW, Figures ran something like a sub 4.3 40x……LOL

  4. Kirk Says:

Stevie Brown intercepted 2 passes and recovered a punt.

How many passes has Mitchell intercepted?

Al and his scholarship bs again.

You guys really go all-in on what some unknown radio clown living in south Florida tweets about the Raiders, eh?

Let’s see what Mitchell can do. Looked pretty good to me at the end of last year once he got healthy and they’ve been creating a special spot for him in some packages to get him on the field (would they really go to all that trouble and then cut Mitchell out of nowhere? don’t think so). Can’t wait to see the kid get some more time in reg season game action.

And I believe safety is now the deepest position the Raiders have. Branch is pretty much universally liked by fans. Huff has plenty of critics, but he really broke out last year and started to play like he did at Texas. I’ve seen him make some more timely pass-play breakups this preseason and I think he’s going to shine this year. Mitchell has a chance to be special — a true enforcer that we haven’t had in decades — if he can find his way onto the field. And Hiram Eugene is a solid option that has looked to be playing the best ball of his life this preseason. He would start for plenty of teams in this league with where he’s at right now.

  8. Chris in NY Says:

And how many teams would ever cut an early 2nd-round prospect who has had ZERO off-field issues before the start of his second season? The whole premise is ludicrous.

  9. Kirk Says:

Let the coaches make the decisions Al.

They grade players based on film study, not draft position.

  10. hendu Says:

Cant believe Im saying this, but where is Mr? Hope our Raider bro is all right, sounded a bit down, whatever, get back to posting so I/we can check ya! Mr,RAIDERS will win 9 or more games, period! Comment?

  11. priesttj Says:

This is still Mr Davis’ team and most of these players wouldn’t be here t keep on the team if he didn’t draft them. You don’t know what went into it. You’re just jumping to your usual Al Davis propaganda crap with out any knowledge of facts whatsoever.

Steve Brown can get on the PS much easier than Mitchell can and they can have both while Mitchell would certianly not make it past the waiver wire.

You guy’s so caught up in this media crap why not try to think for yourself once in a while instead of always being led like sheep.

  12. DKnight007 Says:

Chris Cooper should have made it.

If Stevie Brown gets officially and is not at least on practice squad….it will be a stupid move!

  13. DKnight007 Says:

Stevie Brown better be on practice squad!

Eugene staying on this team is a joke IMO.

Thank god Chris Morris was finally CUT!

  14. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

Mike Mitchell will not beat out Michael Huff or Tyvon Branch. We knew that before this radio guy said anything. Mike Mitchell also has difficulty in coverage. We knew that before this radio guy said anything.

Mike Mitchell is a package guy. Hope to see him on the field in situations that lend to his strengths.

    He’s a backup nonetheless.

Only way Mitchell can start is if Michael Huff is released, Branch moves to Free Safety (risk) and Mitchell’s coverage skills improve enough for the coaches to trust him.

Otherwise, he’s in the game to get on the ESPN highlight reel!

  15. DKnight007 Says:

Fu**n STUPID cutting Stevie Brown and keeping freakin Hiram Eugene ahead of him??

    UNREAL!!

Let the coaches make the decisions Al.

    —————————-

So are you in favor of bringing back Kwame Harris and Cornell Green as starters and making Justin Fargas our full-time lead back again at the cost of never letting DMC or Bush ever get a real chance to play? Because those are the types of decisions Cable has made with the roster in his 9-19 NFL head coaching career.

There’s not a coach on this team who has accomplished 1/50th of what Al Davis has in the NFL.

And all that aside the source of this story is ridiculously suspect.

  17. priesttj Says:

I was much more worried about Jeremy Ware making it than brown. That kid Loper is a player as well. We are so deep at safety it doesn’t matter a whole lot about Stevie Brown it’s not like he was going to start. He would’ve been a ST’s player at best. This morning if I said keep Brown over Mitchell most of you would’ve called me crazy but because some story comes out all of sudden you guy’s want Brown over Mitchell. Now that is what I call fickle and a bunch of sheep.

  18. DKnight007 Says:

Brown always making plays around the ball compared to the other clowns like Eugene who are always lost out there.

Old dumb man Al doesn’t know what playmakers look like anymore does he?

  19. RaiderRetribution Says:

Mr. Stevie Brown you are a Raider, do not let anyone tell you any different. You are the example of Pride & Poise. Committment to excellence for you was not a slogan on a banner, but the goal in which you perform. See you on the practice squad.

Al thank you for keeping Mr. Mitchell.

Al if you have to and another team picks up S. Brown off the waiver wire give up another 7th round pick for him; then fire the coach, coordinator, or assistant that put you in the position of having to chose between the two.

  20. DKnight007 Says:

People who are Al Davis LAPFOGS are just IDIOTS!

Brown should have been kept over Eugene!!

  21. priesttj Says:

That’s fans for ya’ they’ll go which ever way the wind is blowing. Stevie Brown hasn’t played a down in the NFL but he’s a star in here because of a story.

That’s why I never listen to fans whims they are way too fickle. Brown is stiff in the hips as well same as Mitchell we don’t know if that kid can really play. He gt a couple of cheap ints. now they’ll put him in the probowl. It’s beyond crazy.

  22. Chris in NY Says:

I think Eugene has looked good this preseason and he’s made some plays before (go back and look at the highlight of the incredible and crucial pick he made at Pittsburgh last year).

Brown will probably wind up on the practice squad. Maybe somebody with depth issues at safety likes him and makes him an offer, but I doubt most will bump one of their guys for a 7th-round rookie free agent. Nothing against Brown, I’d just be a tad surprised if he doesn’t clear waivers.

  23. priesttj Says:

How do you know DKnight I didn’tv see where the coaches support that Eugene wasn’t even questioned it’s just your opinion.

mm is a legend in al’s mind and therefore those who are al’s employees or propagandists are gonna say, we must have mm. funny, he never shows up in games, like sam williams he never gets his name called and really games are all that matter. c’est la vie, al is contributing!

  32. DKnight007 Says:

STEVIE BROWN should have been kept over Hiram “scholarship” Eugene.

Of course the old looney man Al isn’t going to cut Mitchell yet, cause of the bad PR and he doesn’t want to be made fun of yet for the reach pick last year if Mitchell in Round 2.

The old man Al has received enough bad PR already from the JaBustas Russell!

  33. Hobs Gnarly Says:

players who al doesn’t think highly of that have it, are not an option. those who have the physical skill as in size, speed and measureables are all that matters for al because that is the only thing he can evaluate. al would rather keep players he hand chose around forever without merit as a way of saying hey look, i know what i am doing he makes the team every year, but they never seem to make any plays and the only time you hear their name called during a game is for a penalty. vanilla d and deep passes all night long, it’s going to be a long and frustrating season.

yeah we all know al doesn’t care if anyone watches HIS team, that is why he continually inflates the crowd numbers at home games. that tv money must be really good, wonder how much of that makes it into his pocket? should we start calling him that owner who pockets the money and puts any old thing on the field? not doing what it takes to win is all i see him do. if he really wanted to win we would. 7 years of futility, really longer than that with a brief bright spot in gruden but he took care of that. crash and burn. al’s a legend, he’s truly done everything there is to do. from winning, being influential, taking what is not his, picking winners, picking losers, and finally ruining a franchise.

Anyone else wonder if we’re making the right call in starting Campbell over Gradkowski. I like Campbell, but Gradkowski just might have “it”.
    ====================================================
We are ABSOLUTELY making the right call with Campbell over Gradkowski. Gradkowski might have it…and so could Campbell.

My problem with Gradkowski fans is that they are basing everything on such a small sample of evidence. BAsically the 4th QTR of the Steelers game, a decent, not spectacular outing against the Bengals and a preseason game. That’s not enough. If this was all we had, then fine…but his career 53% completion, 3 teams and all that are part of the picture as well.

Campbell simply has a better track record. Sure, there are holes in his game too..othewise he wouldn’t have been available. But Campbell has had several good outings in his career and has also played well in the preseason.

    They both could have “IT”

Jason Campbell should be and is the starting QB. Gradkowski is the backup. For Gradkowski, that represents a significant upgrade to where he was a year ago at this time….a guy just trying to get a job in the NFL.

  53. Hobs Gnarly Says:

you continually miss the point. stevie may or may not be on the practice squad, this is an example of cable getting too much favorable press and al exerting his contributions to the team. as long as al contributes, we don’t win. keeping scholarships and forcing the coaching staff to run certain vanilla plays are killing us. imagine what the team could do if they could keep the game plans they practiced all week instead of getting something new on fridays. imagine what they could do if they didn’t telegraph to the other team that game plan. the other teams says, sweet we got the raiders next week, we can game plan for the following week cause we already know what they are going to do, it’s like a bye week. they know everything there is to know about who’s running the show and his tendencies.

  54. DirtyRaccoon Says:

Chris in NY, you and I have somthin in common. Within the walls.

  55. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

As for Mike Mitchell. I said my piece on Mitchell when the Huff rumors were circulating. Mitchell is a liability in the coverage game. That’s why he’s not out there now.

Also, my only critique of this is that 2nd round picks should be projected starters. THe Raiders reached for him when there were other needs. I don’t think Mitchell was the best available player at his slot. Just my opinion.

I don’t see how Mitchell gets on the field. He’s not nimble enough for the FS spot….and he is not better than Branch at SS.

He’s a package guy. He gets on the field if Huff is released/traded and Branch moves to FS. THat would be risky in my opinion because Branch is a successfull SS….why risk his production at SS for uncertainty at FS.

So, Mitchell will be a package guy until his coverage skills get better.

As far as the Florida sports reporter….probably partially right and partially wrong.

  56. Hobs Gnarly Says:

i am a grads over campbell. dude, shanarat gave him to us and i do mean gave. we’ll see but i don’t think it matters. we are still going to telegraph to the world our game plan.

  57. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    Hobs Gnarly

You are right in one regard. The vanilla defense. The Raiders have to give more looks. They have to blitz, move Nnamdi around. The attitude of “come beat my best 11 straight up” makes for great theater…but in a league ruled by “professional” strategists spending hours upon hours looking for every weakness in a gameplan…in 21st century that’s football suicide.

I remember when Brandon Marshall lined up against Kirk Morrison last year and the Raiders did nothing. Or seeing the opposing #1 receiver simply line up over Chris Johnson.

Gotta mix it up. REmember that EAgle game? Then everyone “joking” if Marshall will get in trouble.

Not funny to me. They seem to have some dynamic players on defense…athletic and big…be a shame not to use them creatively!

  58. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    Hobs,

My bias with gradkowski is that when I see him play…I keep seeing:

    JT O’Sullivan
    Jon Kitna
    Doug Flutie
    Shaun Hill

and any number of backup QBs that flashed here and there…but over the long haul are EXTREMELY ordinary

  60. Hobs Gnarly Says:

but al’s not able of relenting his control and that is what it’s all about. his way over what coaches prefer and his plays over everything else. as long as that is the case we will never win a sb again. and for al to say he does what it takes to win is a sham. he’s no steinbrenner, not even close. he’s a control freak who time has past bye. pretty sad for us fans and for the nfl in general.

  62. Hobs Gnarly Says:

you can say that about gradkowski, fair enough but you can also say that about campbell. my thing with grads is i see gannon in the way he can make a play with the fire he plays with and with the way he makes teammates accountable. i don’t see that yet with campbell, i like campbell don’t get me wrong he is a professional and he is going to study and all that but what else besides a strong arm does he bring?

  63. Hobs Gnarly Says:

too many people (al’s people) want to site their football knowledge in here. you don’t see what we see is always the case, but shoot…..if they can’t do what you say they can do in an actual game, then what good are they. invisible men!!!

  64. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

I also want a fundamentally good QB. I think Campbell is closer to that vision than Gradkowski.

Scrappy and inventive guys are good in a spot..but those guys seem to burn out in no-time.

I never like Jeff Garcia for that reason. Over a season, you could see that he could only lead a team so far.

Again, I have no problem with Gradkowski off the bench.

But if one has problems with Campbell’s track record, I really can’t see how you can like Gradkowski’s track record.

    And BTW, preseason mean nada

  65. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

Ultimately, when you don’t develop your own quarterback, you are going to have to try and take someone else’s scrap and try and make gold out of it.

Its hard, because team’s rarely give up good QBs.

So, with Campbell and Gradkowski…you have these question marks outstanding.

The field of play will prove all at the end.

Oh, and playcalling….and having DMAC average more than 3 yards a carry.

Damn….why did Bush have to get hurt!

  66. Violent Hands Says:

    Grad = Napoleon

    Campbell = Wellington

different type leaders but both effective

  67. GG Says:

    My two cents…
I dont think Al would worry about bad PR coming from cutting Mitchell after dumping Deangelo Hall, Javon Walker, and then Jamarcus Russell without batting an eyelid.

I do however think Eugene is a bad safety and S.Brown was worth holding onto over him. If they’re worried about depth behind Branch/Huff if one of them got injured or traded, reason for keeping Eugene, that’s understandable why that choice was made to keep Eugene, but I don’t agree with it.

If Brown clears waivers and we put him on Practice Squad, then all is forgiven for now. Unless another team claims him off our practice squad.

  68. Hobs Gnarly Says:

    priest,

if you are al’s propagandist, then he should try a new one because you are like his tired old plays……single high safety and four man rush with no hint of a blitz. all you can say is, without al there would be no raiders. al is the raiders. al is a legend. al won 30 years ago. al doesn’t care what the press thinks about him (yeah right).

  69. Guy Says:

    Louis Rankin over Cartwright anyone?

  70. Hobs Gnarly Says:

al does worry about the press nowadays he’s been getting grilled. he held on to walker for what two years without playing him? jamarcus is only gone because of his apparent addiction made it necessary, don’t think otherwise. that is why we are seeing this knee jerk reactions to press speculations. they have become politicans trying to nip things in the bud instead of going out there and doing what it take to win. it’s all about keeping one man’s light shining and nothing about all out balls out do what it takes and if that means protecting al davis over winning then so be it. what a farce.

  71. Hobs Gnarly Says:

this is a playoff team this year and a sb contender next year without al’s contributions, with it we are 7-9 if we are lucky and don’t lose the team half way thru.

  72. GG Says:

    Hobs Gnarly…

There’s truth to what you say. I don’t disagree. But I just ask if Mitchell is such a big deal PR-wise compared to Hall and Russell? But yes, Al worries too much about how he looks, and that gets in the way (at times) in regards to fielding the absolute best 53 annually.

Other organizations do this too tho…Jets holding onto McKnight, Bengals holding onto Andre Smith, and many other powermongers have their stupid idosyncrasies like McDaniels cutting all his best players, his recent trade picks, Shanahan and his perpetual desire to favor an undrafted third string RB to turn them into a 1,000 yard rusher for his resume, etc etc.

  73. Hobs Gnarly Says:

the big picture is what i am trying to point out here and that is if we are stuck with players that are not the best and can’t start because they will be exposed as shams; that leads to al’s schemes being used and we all know those are old and don’t work for any amount of time in this day and age in the nfl. it may seem insignificant but it’s what it means overall….al’s contribution. you may have lived on park avenue 30-40 years ago but if you live on skid row now, no one is going to pay attention to you unless you are a spectacle.

  74. SnB offense defense specialteams Says:

    Hobs,

Your assessment of the last 7 years is sadly accurate.

However, I think this team has more coaching input this time around. I think Marshall and Jackson have some influence on this ball club. I think this offensive line is largely that of Cable. Of course seeing it filled with other teams refuse says enough there.

My biggest issue with Davis is not the roster. I just hope he lets the coaches implement the game plan as they see fit. Even if the general structure is still Al’s…he’s gotta let Marshall for example be creative in his playcalling…..let Jackson not force feed favorite players like last year.

Even Davis is sick of this losing now….I hope

  75. SharkCatcher Says:

this Andy SLATER guy tweeted this an hour ago 1 am ……..@knightTEK From what I know, yes, Mitchell is gone. Doubt Al Davis will step in and change it in this case.
    ———–
so is mike mitchell in or out,,????

  76. RaiderRetribution Says:

Jackson & Marshall must be given full control of play-calling. I believe that is why Al with Cable support hired Hue.

Can the Raiders flip and recall their waiver on S. Brown with-in the 24 hour period.

btw-fyi- Mr. Figurs had 7 fumbles, yes that’s seven fumbles in two years (he only had one reception each year, so we can conclude his fumbles were returning KO &/or punts). He fumbled how many times in preseason and dropped a wide open, between the numbers, all but handed it to him pass by Bruce G, so how is it he made the cut?

I take it the 34mm story isn’t over and will be tweeted, blogged, chatted, posted all-day, until he is either cut or plays against the Titans.

I didn’t realize 34mm was going to be our T.O. Favre.

    ………..
I think the outcry comes more from frustration. Again, we are led to believe that Al has went against the coaches. This is what frustrates people. It undermines the coaches, makes the Organization look unorganized, and brings up once again everything that it is negative about the Raiders.

  86. bcz24 Says:

Some local radio guy in Florida says that Al trumped the coaching staff. No one can verify his credentials or his claim that he worked directly for Al and all of the sudden it means the Raiders are doomed to another 5-11 year? Its even more ridiculous now…

  87. Hobs Gnarly Says:

oh yeah that is a convinient excuse, it’s espn, it’s mort, it’s adam, it’s some guy in south florida. let me tell you it’s some guy at harbor drive named al. a lot of people in here thought highly of stevie brown and the logical reason he is gone is because he outperformed a al favorite. mm is a you tube sensation and not worth anything but al davis’ honor, which is not worth much these days.

  88. ddwight Says:

This is Alz team, and i could be wrong even with all of the talent thats been assembled on this team this year, but until Alz entrusts some1 with football knowlegde to help him run the organization,im not sure when we will be able ever win the trophy again.

  89. Just Fire Baby Says:

My problem with Gradkowski fans is that they are basing everything on such a small sample of evidence

    *********************************

    SnB,

I think in this case, there is something to be said about the unknown, if you will.

Campbell has had 50+ games in the league, and has shown some serious flaws that he has yet to overcome. As another poster pointed out, Shanahan just gave him to us. We all know Mike would never do Al any favors whatsoever, he probably thinks he got over on us for a 4th round pick.

My concern with Campbell, was what plagued him in Washington. Plays to his competition. Had his best career game against the Super Bowl champion Saints last year (did lose the game with a terrible INT in the last minute) and than got benched at home against the Chiefs at halftime, and lost to Lions by puttting up 10 points to a team that hadn’t won in 2 years.

Time will tell, as they say…….

  90. Kirk Says:

I wonder if Al every watches film of his players. Anybody who looks at the film can tell who the better player is. I looked at 5 minutes of film and could tell Crabtree was better than DHB.

  91. Just Fire Baby Says:

    Crabs is a jerk-wad.

His career will be like Antonio Bryant’s. Good player, complete jerk, who will have some good years, but still end up on 6 different teams in his career because he can’t be tolerated.

  92. hellsbells Says:

MM34 is a strong saftey. Brown is a free saftey. It was Eugene over brown. Why all the hate on 34MM. Agreed I would have liked to keep Brown over Eugene but, maybe maybe the Huff trade talks are correct and the Raiders are scaed of just having a rookike 7TH round pick as there only FS.

  93. Just Fire Baby Says:

I like what I saw from Stevie Brown, but again it was a few series in some meaningless preseason games against 3rd stringers.

More than likely he will be on the PS, and realistically he could still get called up to the show at some point in the season.

We already going to have a rookie C, a brand new QB, a new OC, a rookie MLB, a rookie DE, an all-new LB core. Adding a rookie FS, even as backup or in some dime packages, might be just a little much.

  94. Hobs Gnarly Says:

what has mm done to deserve love?

  95. hellsbells Says:

Nothing, what has Brown done to show that the Raiders are falling apart because we released him? Like I said before I was in faover of keeping Brown, would rather had let a wr go than either saftey. Yamon is a sham.

  96. Hobs Gnarly Says:

brown has done nothing to show the raiders are falling apart, it’s speculated that al is keeping his players over what the coaches want. it’s al making a new game plan on friday afternoon after having done something completely different during the week. it’s al running single high safety and four man rushes with no options to blitz and the other team knowing it. it’s throwing a bomb third and long to a receiver al chooses. too much al means the raiders stink!

  97. Hobs Gnarly Says:

i wonder if you asked nnamdi what he thinks, he thought highly of sb.

  98. Bauce 4 Real Says:

Al Davis is a fawkin BAUCE!

  99. Kirk Says:

Jamarcus, DHB, DMAC, Mitchell, what a series of bad draft picks. Davis needs to let the coaches do their job.

  100. Bauce 4 Real Says:

So what he stepped in over some ppl? This happens everyday in business. Good for you Al! It is your team do what you feel. I’d prefer Tonga on roster and Carlisle cut but in no way do I believe this is a 6 or 7 win team

  101. GG Says:

One thing to back up Al on…

A GM/Owner ALWAYS gets his say above the coaches anyway. You think it’s any different elsewhere? If Tannenbaum wants McKnight in the 53 Rex has to put up with it, which he did. If Mike Brown says i want Andre Smith still in the 53 because i invested a 1st rounder and tens of millions on him to give up this soon, then Marvin Lewis has to deal with it. If Snyder or Jerry Jones or Kraft insist on some player, they’ll get their way. And OFTEN it’s for the same reason as what reportedly Al did for Mitchell—-i invested a high round pick and millions on someone, i want to persist a while longer still.

The ONLY problem i have is that it was Eugene over Brown. Tho I DO understand WHY—Eugene can be relied on as a back-up safety if Branch/Huff went down, neither mitchell nor brown could. So one of them “had to” go. It’s just Al and the coaches disagreed who it should be. And as we see all around the league, owners sometimes let the coaches say who, owners often want to have that final say.

  102. Bauce 4 Real Says:

Kirk…..shut up. You are and always will be an amazingly idiotic poster. You bring nada to this blog and shouldnt be allowed to speak in here ever again.

  103. GG Says:

Again, my only question about all this is not that it was done, not that Al gets a final say, just “why” eugene over brown/mitchell when WE look at either mitchell/brown and say they’re worth it more…when perhaps the coaches/Al are right that Eugene is more dependable.

Why i think it’d be ENLIGHTENING more than anything else, if Hard Knocks did it on the Raiders, then we could see EXACTLY what we see from the coaches, hear how they assess all the players we know and love and hate, how Al and coaches interact, etc etc.

  104. Bauce 4 Real Says:

Crabtree better than DHB? Explain please. Do you realize people are drafted based on a team’s philosophy. If Crabtree wasnt conducive to our strategy why get him? Dummy.

  105. Bauce 4 Real Says:

Hiram Eugene sucks for sure. Im not pleased about this scrub on this team.

  106. Bauce 4 Real Says:

    GG…..i agree

  107. GG Says:

Yeah, i thought what Brown showed was sufficient to back up in the safety position as well as both MM and SB being STs players to replace whatever eugene did, and we all know how our STs is in a bad way in every way.

I wonder if SB or MM made any glaring errors on STs coverage as we did have a couple returned for TDs during pre-season.

But first impressions for a few years now has been Eugene is mediocre and needs to be replaced by new talent like Brown/Mitchell.

Overall I am quite pleased with the 53 man roster, sure there are a couple of things I would have done differently, but I’m not a coach, so what do I know?

I’m stoked that Loper made the cut, the guy has good size and experience and can be a backup for Gallery. Barnes can back-up Henderson at LT. Now we just gotta move Walker to RT and put B-Camp in at RG when he is ready (hopefully soon).

I would have liked to see Stevie B picked over Eugene, but not over MM34. Hopefully we won’t see Eugene much except for special teams. If Stevie B gets picked up by another team, we gotta get Jerome Boyd on the practice squad! I’d take ‘em both on the PS if it were me. Eugene Stinks!

I was also hoping that Manase Tonga would be kept, he shows promise as a blocking FB. Hopefully we get him on the PS too. I hope Cartwright can be utilized at the FB position as well.

I was surprised to see Richardson cut. I liked that guy and I wish him the best.

Thec i totally agree Hue will try to attack them but we still have to not ignore running the ball so the play action game can be effective.

    ++++++++++++=

Running the ball is crucial and campbell really sells the play action pass….

Report: Al Davis overrules decision to cut Mike Mitchell
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 5, 2010 10:09 AM ET
Remember Mike Mitchell? He was the No. 47 overall pick in the 2009 draft, the safety from Ohio University that Mike Mayock and the rest of the nation of draftniks thought Oakland took about five rounds too early.

On Saturday, Mitchell was reportedly the subject of a behind-the-scenes battle between Raiders owner Al Davis and the team’s coaching staff. We’ll let you guess who won.

Let’s back the story up for a minute. 2010 Seventh-round Raiders safety Stevie Brown practiced on Saturday. He spoke with the media about making the team. But when the Raiders officially released their cuts Saturday afternoon, they still had one move left to make.

    Here’s where it gets fun.

A former Raiders employee-turned Florida radio host Andy Slater said that Brown was going to get the axe on his Twitter page. This was hours before he news came out. He also reported that “everyone in the organization” except Al Davis wanted to cut Mitchell instead of Brown. Davis essentially wanted to avoid the P.R. hit and admit he made such a big mistake last year. (Maybe Davis told them Mitchell “is a great player. Get over it.”)

Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune breaks down the timeline of Slater’s tweets, which are fascinating. It’s hard to doubt him when he nailed the news before it happened.

Apparently the coaching staff pushed hard for Brown, who also has impressed teammates. But after the Raiders couldn’t find a taker for Mitchell in a trade, they cut Brown. (Even if they didn’t officially mention it on their website until very late last night.)

“Let me be clear, for those tweeting me on Mitchell/Raiders, coaches do NOT want him. Addition by subtraction,” Slater wrote.

But as we know, coaches don’t always get what they want. Especially in Oakland.

Just another day in Raider Nation.

  189. SharkCatcher Says:

” THIS IS THE GREATEST OFF SEASON EVER”….wait, they just released stevie brown….ohhh nooo…this is the worst off season ever” ..you guys are dumb!!!

  190. Bauce 4 Real Says:

Neilb….why be so negative and call us stupid off the bat? I dont care if first play is dmac between tackles as long as oline blocks? How would you feel if dmac springs open a big run to start off? I believe the gguy will do better than the haters can believe

  191. SaintKaufman Says:

    One teams misery!! :D

Denver Post’s Mike Klis reports Broncos HC Josh McDaniels and GM Brian Xanders admitted their own mistakes Saturday in making final cuts to the Broncos’ roster. Now, if the Broncos’ football operation bosses can do something about their initial player evaluation process. McDaniels and Xanders set the 53-man roster while dumping an armored truck worth of dead money in their wake. Among the more notable player moves were the release of DE Jarvis Green, who will collect $3.255 million without ever stepping on the field for the Broncos, and TE Marquez Branson, who had been the team’s top receiving tight end through the offseason and preseason. Popular and productive WR Brandon Stokley was placed on injured reserve until a settlement terminates his contract, which has already paid him $600,000 in bonuses this year. “It’s hard to make it as a backup slot receiver,” Stokley said. “I think that was the main thing. And one that doesn’t play special teams. So I think all that added up to me being released.” The team also released backup OLB Darrell Reid, whose offseason knee surgery made him a candidate for the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, and OG Seth Olsen, a fourth-round pick in 2009. And then there was the most startling admission of all, that giving up a future first-round draft pick (which turned out to be Seattle FS Earl Thomas at No. 14 overall this year) for CB Alphonso Smith a year ago was an unfortunate error in judgment. Smith, who received a $2.15 million signing bonus as the No. 37 overall selection in the 2009 draft, was traded to Detroit in exchange for TE Dan Gronkowski, a seventh-round pick in the same draft who will replace the disappointing Branson as the Broncos’ new receiving tight end. The teams also traded undisclosed draft picks. The one-day total of wasted money: $6.01 million on Green, Smith and Stokley.

    SharkCatcher lol

  193. neilb Says:

    4 Real…….

If that happened I’d be the first person to say I was wrong.I’m not down on Dmac’s ability as a running back,I’m down on the Raiders use of his talents.

  194. DT42 Says:

    Thoughts about MM over Brown,

First I have a problem with the story itself, it doesn’t make much sense. If the story was about keeping Eugene over Brown it would sound more accurate. I don’t trust anything that I hear on sports talk radio. According to the media, Cable got fired last year, Jim Harbrough is our new coach and Matt Leinart is our new starting QB who is subbing for an injured Donavan McNabb which we picked up for a 2nd round pick in last years draft. A draft that we picked Bruce Campbell with the our FIRST pick. Do you see what I’m getting at?

How Brown got cut over Eugene is the true story here. I think that is a bad move. But we are so used to mismanagement at the top that when some talking head pulls something out of he a$$ we all run with it. I don’t remember MM getting burned for TD’s last year becuase he was out of position. I don’t remember that ever being an issue except for average rookie mistakes that are made during practice. But now because some hack in Miami that used to cut film for the Raiders says so its true. I’m sure that this guy is going to be this years Randy Hanson.

But we also have to see what is going to be done with Goethel (does he go on IR or PUP?) If so, does Brown come back? Also what if we want to make a move for someone else on the waiver wire? I think that there are still moves to be made. But i just don’t buy this story until its confirmed by someone that is a trusted source.

  195. Bauce 4 Real Says:

  198. TheyCallMeAssassin Says:

Could it have been Michael HUFF over Brown? That would have made more sense…

Unless it just came down to the bottom two players on the roster, and it was Mitchell v.s. Brown?

Walker subbed at LG last season, and did good, I don’t see him doing any worse at RG than Carlisle.

The Coaches want B-camp at RG, but I’d rather use him at Tackle because of his strength and speed.

Eugene made some plays on special teams this preseason, I’ll give him that much. It just doesn’t make much sense keeping him instead of a young upstart like Brown.

I’m not convinced that anyone on the Raider depth chart at FS can actually tackle. The big plays will continue to haunt us, but hopefully good play up front can minimize the big plays.

  239. r8eray Says:

According to Jim Wyatt of the Nashville Tennessean, Raiders LB Thomas Howard is on the Titans’ radar.

Howard would be a great fit for the team, as SLB David Thornton is on the PUP and LB Gerald McRath is suspended until Week 5. Wyatt also adds the the Raiders play the Titans Week 1, so if a trade were to happen it probably wouldn’t be until after the opener.

  240. PurpleDrank81 Says:

Keenan Allen will be a cal star…I think its funny that Tedford said he was already better than Desean Jackson was in his junior year

  242. Hobs Gnarly Says:

burgess wanted to retire and the pats hounded him to come back. his hearts not in it.

you guys continue to muddy up the water on this brown cutting but the point of it is with al at the helm it’s another losing season. he is the only guy who’s been here through the losing making all the decisions because it’s his team. we had a promising off season and preseason and now if his name doesn’t get mentioned he has to rear his ugly head and force his will. nobody cares if he lived on park ave 30-40 years ago, he lives on skid row now. the point is you can expect the same thing out of the raiders if coaches are forced to bow to his will and his players and his play calling.

  243. dirtyhoesdraws Says:

    I agree with oak-tone

  244. BigTed707 Says:

    big ted raiders 28 – titans 17
    __________________

    I like it!
To me, the Tight-uns are one of the best coached teams in the league today. They will not make many mistakes, so we gotta be on our game.
I also think their defensive front four looks pretty good and could give us fits on third and long. We gotta be able to move the ball on 1st and 2nd downs.

One place I see we have a distinct advantage is our passing offense vs. their secondary. This will help us move the ball down-field, but becomes less of an advantage in the red-zone. I expect to see some of our drives stutter and result in field-goals.

Another advantage we have is our secondary vs. the tit-ones passing offense. I expect Aso and Co. to shut down the passing game – leaving it up to CJ2K to put the game on his shoulders.

I expect a few big runs from CJ2K, but no more than 2 TDs.

This is one of the toughest games on our schedule this season, but I think we eek out a win on the foot of Seabass.

    Go Raiders (1-0)!

yep it’s his team and he is accountable for being the worst team of the last seven years and that includes the lions who didn’t who took a season off. something to be proud of there. nobody except al to blame

  307. Oak-Tone Says:

Always been Oak-Tone. Usually don’t post..just read the dribble.

And been A Raiders fan since 1974, I was 6 years old. Al Davis has brought us to 5 superbowls and one 3. There aren’t too many owners or teams that have done better. And many haven’t even been to the show.

    Morning Raccoon,

Whats your opinion on whats going on (roster cuts) in Oakland?

    *****************

Loper over Morris was a good call.

Mitchell over Brown is a good call. We need them both. Brown has a much better chance of clearing.

I had hpoe for Tonga, maybe a PS player… try again next year.

Todd Watkins, besides a few pre-season games nothin there, so good cut.

Jay Richardson, Ahhh not to sure about this. Leave us thin/lite at DE. Although we do have several OLB that can play DE on 3rd ect..

  310. Oak-Tone Says:

    Won 3..

  311. Hobs Gnarly Says:

nope not finding an out, truly hope they win but cannot win with al’s play calling. if al wants to win he has to let his coaches coach.

  312. Bauce 4 Real Says:

No Hobs pay attention if Al is such the play calleer u suggest he is and he hates screen plays why is it a part of our gameplan in 2010? Hypocrite alert

  313. RNOraiderFan Says:

Been a fan since 1974 too! The year I was born at Kaiser in Heyward.

Lamar Houston wears that number now.

  322. GG Says:

Finally Andy Slater aka Willis Da Raider (tho he’s a Panthers fan) gets some national exposure. God help RF.net now, they’ll lap it up and probably increase prices for people to join up to hear “inside rumors” being leaked from within Alameda to Andy Slater which is what RF.net lives on.

If there’s anything i look forward (sorry to those who like RF.net) is that the Raiders force legal action and close that site down, sue for recompensation.

  323. Bauce 4 Real Says:

Hobs no i didnt! You are really embarrasing yourself…read pposts again take notice of ? marks and the lols…..comprehension is key for you. I clearly was mocking you…come u acting like MR NOW

  324. Hobs Gnarly Says:

al has a love for the long ball but besides that it’s usually the defense he has his hand in. you suggested al put in the screen play with reece not me.

  325. Thec07 Says:

If we can keep CJ at bay, meaning under 150, and a score, while putting someone on VY so that he doesnt run for 1st downs on 3rd and longs, we blow them out…

  326. Bauce 4 Real Says:

Ha RNO….i was born at Kaiser in Oakland!

  327. Hobs Gnarly Says:

comprehension is not your strong point, did you not say this….”Hobs on example to shut u up…..how about Marcel Reece screen plays and his wheel route deep as a fullback? That’s vintage Al Davis lol”?

  328. Bauce 4 Real Says:

Hobs no i was merely putting an example of using fullback as a weapon is not Al’s forte you on the other hand acting like a woman and trying to lie to justify your nonsense

  329. Bauce 4 Real Says:

HOBS COME ONE! lol….did you not see question mark with the LOL…..u know what word “vintage” means? Anyone on here can see im killin you

    Daniel Loper
    Age: 28
    Height: 6-6 Weight: 320

Assets: A good pass protector with a massive physique. Uses his long arms to keep defenders at bay. Is quick and agile with good footwork, sliding and mirroring well. Reads blitzes and makes good decisions.

Flaws: A finesse blocker who doesn’t exploit his size and leverage like he could. Gets driven backward in the running game and can be bull-rushed.
