Official word on Raiders final roster cuts

By Steve Corkran
Saturday, September 4th, 2010 at 1:01 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Just met with Raiders coach Tom Cable. Here is the list of 21 players released by the Raiders, as announced by Cable a few minutes ago. Note that the Raiders still have one roster move to make before the deadline in two hours:

PLAYER        POSITION     EXPERIENCE

Colt Brennan            Quarterback  2

Luke Lawton Fullback         5

Manase Tonga         Fullback         R

Shaun Bodiford       Wide receiver            4

Todd Watkins            Wide receiver            3

John Owens Tight end       9

Chris Morris  Center            5

Alex Parsons            Guard R

Brandon Rodd          Guard 1

Alex Daniels Defensive end          R

Greyson Gunheim   Defensive end          2

Jay Richardson        Defensive end          4

Kellen Heard            Defensive tackle      R

William Joseph        Defensive tackle

Chris Cooper            Defensive tackle      8

David Nixon  Linebacker    2

Slade Norris  Linebacker    2

Joe Porter      Cornerback   2

Joey Thomas            Cornerback   4

Jerome Boyd            Safety 2

Swayze Waters        Punter            1

The notable additions are fullback Luke Lawton and defensive end Jay Richardson. Also, Cable said there still is some discussion as to who the final player waived will be. The Raiders have until 3 p.m. to announce that final move.

Speaking with Cable cleared up any confusion surrounding defensive tackle Desmond Bryant and rookie cornerback Walter McFadden. Both are on the 53-man roster, for now anyway. One of them might be the final player cut within the next two hours, or one of them could be placed on the injured-reserve list.

In other news, Cable said that rookie Jared Veldheer is the starting center, supplanting four-year veteran Samson Satele.

Cable said he was informed of the Seattle Seahawks cutting wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh just before he walked into the conference room. He said that he and his coaching staff will discuss players cut by other teams later today before making any moves.

Boyd and Richardson is disappointing otherwise fair enough… Nice to see Veldheer starting but really only because we don’t have a decent C…

    Definitely up for TJ Housh!

  • RaiderKen

Richardson is the only surprise surprise surprise.

    Why did we cut Richardson?!
    That makes no sense!

  • Bauce 4 Real

Lol so manase tonga to your practice squad if he clears waivers hahahahahaha too funny…..let our true lead back not be on field………we got better but we dont fully get it yet

  • El Tato

Both Cooper and Richardson cut? I think JRich was a valuable backup player and Cooper did well in preseason in my opinion.

I would rather had one of those two instead of Figurs, Higgins or N.Miller

  • Bauce 4 Real

BHP tell me u just didnt show you are in denial still! Tommy Kelly’s own words just puts ur post to death! He said they pplay zero tech! Please keep posting lol

    ++++++++++++

    WOW….

  • centurionWR87

I think we should have cut Brown instead of Richardson or trade Howard for a 5th round pick or something…

Chris Johnson for a 4th/5th maybe too? And then sign TJ or… release Figurs and sign TJ!

  • DirtyRaccoon

    Greyson Gunheim Defensive end 2

    Jay Richardson Defensive end 4

    Kellen Heard Defensive tackle R

    William Joseph Defensive tackle

    Chris Cooper Defensive tackle 8

    Scott back to DE.

  • Thec07

The Pocket did look better with V at C however, we could have left satele in at C, and moved V to somewhere else…

The Broncos sent cornerback Alphonso Smith to Detroit for tight end Dan Gronkowski.

The Broncos had high hopes for Smith, giving up a first-round draft pick to move up in the second round and acquire him in 2009 draft.

The Lions selected Gronkowski in the seventh round of the 2009 draft.

    …………………………..

Well, we cant be doing worse than the Donkies

His injury? I tohught he was on track to return???

  • Just Fire Baby

Veldheer starting, after really only one game at C.

That might have been the easiest job to steal on the team.

  • Bauce 4 Real

El Tato thats because you are an idiot and dont know football

I always stayed out of that whole debate, but didn’t he also say it didn’t really matter because either way you get blocked the same way?

Dont get me wrong, I was all for V starting at C however, if satele was serviceable, V with his talent could move else where… Point of starting the 5 best Olinemen….

    J,

You were right!!! Veldheer is the starting C, and that’s why he didn’t play the last preseason game.

    Do your victory dance bro!

  • Just Fire Baby

I think at least one of our WR’s will be the last cut.

You would have to think it is Figurs, but if they bring in someone (like a TJ Housh) than it could be Figurs and someone else.

  • Thec07

    Put satele on suicide watch…

  • El Tato

Well Bauce 4 Real, you cannot be the most intelligent guy in the world if you think the Broncos did well, they lost their first round pick in 2010 to get Alphonso Smith

Why did they cut Richardson? that must be the reason they moved T Scott back to DE. Well at least my boy Nicky Miller stuck but a lot will change when they reclaim some of these players to the PS. I also thought Joseph played really well I’m not sure what happened there. Not sure why they kept Yamon Figurs either that’s woo many WR’s. Something is up so we’ll see what happens in the next 24 hrs.

It seems they really like Veldheer at C so we’ll how that works out. He must be getting it done in practice. This Goethel thing is somewhat bothersome I really like that kid and when they go to 3/4 alignment I was hoping he would be inside with McClain now he’s out. So maybe Grove will get that post.

Satele wasn’t serviceable. Got overpowered far too frequently. Additionally, don’t forget one of the reasons he got benched last year was dissatisfaction by the coaching staff over his line calls. Suspect there wasn’t enough improvement there and once V showed he was up to the task even as a raw rookie, it was inevitable Setele became 2nd string.

  • J Hill

VittorioTafur Jared Veldheer wins starting center job. Cable says it makes them bigger and more physical

    ——————————————————-

    Yup!

Pretty obvious the pressure up the middle had to stop. No more rag dolling arsse Satele in there.

  • Coach on Wheels

TOLD YOU – It isn’t hard to figure out when you look at it like a coach.

Told you after the Seattle game Veldheer was the starting C and Morris was going to be the surprise cut.

The 99 yard return allowed by the back-ups locked in S Williams and Eugene for special teams at least.

No need for a third TE with Pears.

    Figurs is on scholarship.

If the team can’t swing a quick trade they’ll likely IR someone or cut Eugene or a WR.

  • Coach on Wheels

Priest – I think J Rich is odd out because he is a base guy. If he isn’t in on first down, he’s not getting in. If we start Houston and Matt S and have Wimbley, Scott, Seymour etc as situational players, JR never sees the field. Just a numbers game.

  • justinh

    Coach on Wheels,

You’re right! (I would add Groves.)

  • Hobs Gnarly

all you al propagandists defending sam williams in here like he’s a pro bowler. when is the last time he made a play? geez, some of you don’t ever stop. he’s james jett with muscles.

  • RaiderRetribution

Scott will remain at OLB, I see Jay Richardson being resigned with a new contract more favorable to Al’s pocket book, especially if Bryant is the on that goes to IR.

Unless we pick up another player, which I’m sure we will waiver wire or trade, could be a two for one going on, Huff + one?

  • Vinous

COW – I am not so sure Morris was a big surprise Veldheer starting, after really only one game at C coming from a DIV II school is! It is a testament to his athleticism – superior to our entire OL (except “maybe” Gallery)

    I think I called the JRich cut…
