Practice squad takes shape
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, September 5th, 2010 at 11:05 am in Oakland Raiders.
Four players released to reach the 53-man limit were back on the field Sunday during the media window as the Raiders went through warmups and drills prior to a padded practice.
The returnees were defensive tackle Kellen Heard, wide receiver Shaun Bodiford and fullback Manase Tonga. A fourth player, wearing No. 65, is believed to be offensive lineman Alex Parsons. The Raiders had no information to release regarding the practice squad.
Players who were not at practice included linebacker Travis Goethel (undisclosed injury) and wide receiver Chaz Schilens (knee). Defensive tackle Desmond Bryant was present but not practicing, as was running back Michael Bush, who was wearing a cast on his left hand to protect his surgically repaired broken thumb.
During team drills, Trevor Scott was working with the defensive linemen. Meanwhile, Quentin Groves was in conversation with linebackers coach Mike Haluchak. Assuming Scott has gone back to the defensive line full time _ he played both right and left end against Seattle _ Groves would be a candidate to start on the weak side, although Thomas Howard had worked on both sides.
More to come later . . .

Howard would be a great fit for the team, as SLB David Thornton is on the PUP and LB Gerald McRath is suspended until Week 5. Wyatt also adds the the Raiders play the Titans Week 1, so if a trade were to happen it probably wouldn’t be until after the opener

Here’s an example of GM Tannenbaum overriding coaches…
Jets waived RB Chauncey Washington.
Washington did well on special teams in the preseason, but the Jets gave the nod to Danny Woodhead and rookie Joe McKnight. Washington is reportedly “fuming” about the decision, and we can’t blame him. He would’ve been more useful than McKnight, who will be a game-day scratch on most Sundays.

Age: 28
Height: 6-6 Weight: 320
Assets: A good pass protector with a massive physique. Uses his long arms to keep defenders at bay. Is quick and agile with good footwork, sliding and mirroring well. Reads blitzes and makes good decisions.
Flaws: A finesse blocker who doesn’t exploit his size and leverage like he could. Gets driven backward in the running game and can be bull-rushed.

This is why it’s a roller-coaster ride…all just within a span of minutes….
Browns claimed CB Quincy Butler off waivers from the Rams.
The Browns enjoy keeping a lot of defensive backs (and linebackers) on the active 53, so Butler will slot in as an end-of-the roster insurance policy.
Patriots claimed OT Steve Maneri off waivers from the Texans.
Maneri was a tight end at Temple before converting to offensive tackle. He’s a developmental prospect, having gone undrafted this April.
Source: Brian McIntyre on Twitter
Jaguars claimed DT Landon Cohen off waivers from the Lions.
Cohen will provide depth along the Jaguars’ defensive line.
Source: Drew Rosenhaus on Twitter
Bucs claimed RB Kregg Lumpkin off waivers from the Packers.
Lumpkin can pick up the blitz, making him a better option than Clifton Smith on passing downs. Not an explosive runner, however, Lumpkin won’t put heat on the Bucs’ top two backs — Caddy Williams and Kareem Huggins.
Source: Tom Silverstein on Twitter
Cardinals claimed CB Brandon McDonald off waivers from the Browns.
This is a great pickup for the Cardinals, especially with all the question marks at cornerback after DRC. McDonald has a lot of starting experience (27 games over the past three seasons), is only 25, and will be cheap.
Source: Brandon McDonald on Twitter
Titans claimed LB Tim Shaw off waivers from the Bears.
Shaw, 26, set a Bears franchise record with 30 special teams stops in 2009. He’ll work in a similar role for Tennessee, but won’t contribute on defense.
Source: Brad Biggs on Twitter
Ravens claimed CB/KR Bryan McCann off waivers from the Cowboys.
McCann was impressive this offseason, and the Cowboys were really hoping to sneak him onto the practice squad. The undrafted rookie out of SMU will begin low on the depth chart, but has some appeal as a long-term dime back. He will handle return duties for the Ravens now that CB/KR Prince Miller has been moved to the practice squad.
Source: ESPN.com
Lions claimed TE Spencer Havner off waiver from the Packers.
Unless the Lions want to carry four tight ends, Will Heller could be the odd man out. Havner, a productive special teamer with some playmaking ability (four TDs on seven catches last year), he’s the ideal No. 3 tight end.
Source: Aaron Wilson on Twitter
Cardinals claimed OLB Cyril Obiozor off waivers from the Packers.
Obiozor spent last season with the Packers after playing college ball at Texas A&M. He had two tackles in five games in 2009. Obiozor will be the Cards’ No. 4 outside ‘backer behind Joey Porter, Clark Haggans, and Will Davis.
Source: Adam Caplan on Twitter
Seahawks claimed DT Junior Siavii off waivers from the Cowboys.
The 6-foot-5, 320-pound Siavii will work in a rotation at nose tackle behind Colin Cole once he gets up to speed in Pete Carroll’s 4-3 defense. Siavii has been a 3-4 nose tackle the past few seasons for Jerry Jones’ club.

Buccaneers claimed C/G Ted Larsen off waivers from the Patriots.
Larsen was a sixth-round pick who the Pats probably wanted on the practice squad. He’ll practice behind starting center Jeff Faine in Tampa.

Bengals claimed QB Dan LeFevour off waivers from the Bears.
It looks like the Bengals have a thing for QBs with below average arm strength. Though productive in college, LeFevour hasn’t shown that he’s worthy of an NFL roster. J.T. O’Sullivan was released to make room for LeFevour.

Again the whole GM vs Coaches thing, plus also grr if we’re seriously considering it…
Sources tell Profootballtalk.com that the Seahawks “have an internal split” regarding free agent Matt Leinart.
It’s probably safe to assume that Leinart’s former coach Pete Carroll heads the camp that is calling for the team to sign the QB. PFT also confirms that the Texans and Raiders remain in the mix for Leinart.

Ok, answer this honestly…CONSIDERING THE TOTAL CHAOS OF THE LAST SEVEN YEARS..you know..since the last “GM” left, on any other team, in any sport, would the current GM of the Raiders be fired? A LONG TIME AGO???
We all know the answer to that..and therein lays the problem. That is why the media makes an issue of the decisions made by someone who desperately needs the help of a GM, but refuses to admit that.
September 5th, 2010 at 12:15 pm
GG, I don’t know why the media puts more emphasis on Raiders’ internal problems more so than other teams, but I’d say a televised hour long tirade with an overhead projector has something to do with it. Whatdya think?

What….what the hell is his forte’?

Richochet…
Yeah i already agree that if Al was a freelance GM, under the gun of an owner, he’d have been fired. Im not an ostrich. However, GM/Owners exist like Paul Brown, Al Davis, George Halas, and with that comes that leeway to hold your role, or have underling “VP of Football Operations” people and other labels that help you out but still under you. Also, there are sheer Owners out there without a GM role who do “interfere” a lot like Snyder, J.Jones. That can be worse, especially when they don’t have the football acumen of Davis, just business men. So yeah, Davis’ last seven years are a mirror for him, but it’s still a bit remiss of the media, a lot of them young punks, to just go to town on an easy story like dissing Al cos it’s fashionable and a way to get a name, when there’s a lack of respect there for his litany of success and achievment in the NFL. Paul Brown, Halas, werent popular at the end, but perhaps not mauled either nationally like Al has? That’s for the oldies to reply back on.

Al is doing a good draft with the draft picks. Pretty high bar some folks have set for him.
DHB, Shaugnessy, Murphy, and Brandon Meyers all solid draft picks from last year. Only miss was Mitchell.
All draft picks from this years draft will make the team. Top 3 picks are starters!

Profootballtalk.com reports that unsigned restricted free agent Vincent Jackson had a one-year contract worked out with an unnamed team Saturday, but the deal was scuttled when the sides couldn’t agree on trade terms.
It was probably either the Rams or the Seahawks — most likely St. Louis. The Rams were widely reported to have renewed their interest in Jackson rather suddenly on Saturday, before reports confirmed they’d given up on the idea roughly an hour later. Jackson is now ineligible to play before Week 7. Perhaps St. Louis or Seattle will try to make another play for V-Jax thereafter.

======================
No doubt Al has the smarts..it’s just the stamina needed to do a GM’s job that’s missing.
Hey..can’t mess with father time..catches us all.
Every GM, on every team, has spent 18 hours a day, straight, this last few days/week to analyze who might be available, from what team, what is needed, and who to go after the moment the cuts start…how many hours do you believe Al has spent this last week? or day?
As far as the Moldy Oldies? Halas and such..yeah, that was a different day, that’s for sure..back when players stayed with teams, no holdouts, or few, just hard knock football.
Media? IMO, 1/4 to 1/3 of every newspaper/online staff is dedicated to just stirring up crap, to rile people up, to get attention..so they jump on anything, including Al.
Have to admit..Al tends to welcome it, warrant it, and in many cases, deserves it, right?
