Stevie Brown returns to practice

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, September 5th, 2010 at 12:46 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Stevie Brown and Slade Norris came off the field with the Raiders Sunday, meaning they were likely added to the practice squad.

With Manase Tonga, Kellen Heard, Alex Parsons and Kellen Heard also on the field, the Raiders have two more spots to fill. All players must clear waivers before being named to the practice squad and be claimed off the practice squad by another team for its 53-man roster at any time.

When approached by reporters coming off the field, Brown responded with a polite wave and declined comment.

Running back Michael Bush, working on his own with either a cast or heavy wrap protecting his left wrist, went through some agility exercises and waved off requests from reporters.

The last player off the field for practice was new starting center Jared Veldheer, working on shotgun formation snaps under the watchful eye of offensive line coach Jim Michalczik.

Linebacker Quentin Groves did not disclose that he was the starting weakside linebacker, but Trevor Scott was said he was working exclusively with the defensive line and that Groves was working with the first team at weakside linebacker.

More to come following press briefing with Tom Cable . . .

OAKLAND, Calif. — JaMarcus Russell threaded passes to Johnnie Lee Higgins, Chaz Schilens and Zach Miller. Higgins showed off his game-breaking ability on another punt return and Darren McFadden got involved in the offense early.

As another disappointing season nears its conclusion, some of the younger Oakland Raiders tried to show there could be reason for optimism in the future.

    Fast Facts
    • The win was the Raiders’ first against Houston (1-3), it snapped a three-game losing streak and ended a four-game home losing streak.

    • For the first time in his career, JaMarcus Russell threw two touchdowns in back-to-back games

    • Steve Slaton did not rush for 100 yards for the first time in his last four games, but his 66 rushing yards gave him 1,190 on the season to set the Texans’ record. Domanick Williams had 1,188 in 2004.

    – ESPN research

    • Rapid Reaction

Higgins caught one of Russell’s two touchdown passes and returned a punt 80 yards for another score, leading the Raiders to a 27-16 victory over the Houston Texans on Sunday.

“You saw a lot of our young players show up and had an impact,” interim coach Tom Cable said. “As I’ve said for a while, that’s the future of our organization and that’s the direction we’re headed. It was a complete victory.”

The Raiders gained a season-high 362 yards, with 252 coming from players in their first or second year in the NFL.

It’s the first time since the 2002 Super Bowl season the Raiders won their final home game. The rest of the year has been much of the same losing for Oakland (4-11), which became the first team in NFL history to drop at least 11 games for six straight seasons.

The Texans (7-8) had won four straight for the first time in team history and were hoping for their first winning season. But Houston could generate little against the lowly Raiders and were unable to follow up on last week’s win over Tennessee.

“We were looking forward to having the first winning season in our history,” linebacker DeMeco Ryans said. “When you play the way we played last week, with a big win over a big team, you have to find a way to play with the same effort, and we didn’t do it.”

By beating the Texans for the first time in four tries, the Raiders are assured of not tying Tampa Bay for the most losses in any six-year period. Oakland is 23-72 since the beginning of the 2003 season.

“I know what we’re doing right now, but in the years to come how good can we be?” asked Russell. “I think out there those guys are showing it.”

This was one of the Raiders’ best performances of the year. They scored touchdowns on the opening possessions of each half for the first time in more than seven years, got two touchdown passes from Russell, recovered an onside kick and scored on Higgins’ punt return.

Russell finished 18-for-25 for 236 yards and no interceptions in one of the best performances of his young career. McFadden gained 87 yards from scrimmage and Miller added four more catches for 70 yards.

Russell capped the opening drive with a 20-yard pass to Schilens, just the second TD on an opening drive for Oakland in the past 56 games.

Russell then connected with Higgins on a 29-yard score on Oakland’s first drive of the third quarter to make it 20-13. Higgins celebrated that touchdown with one of his end-zone dances and got a chance to do another after Oakland stopped Houston on the succeeding drive. Higgins fielded a punt at the 20 and ran right through the Texans for his third punt return TD this season, one shy of the NFL record.

“I feel like I’m explosive,” said Higgins, who has five touchdowns this season longer than 50 yards. “You never know what can happen. You know, it looks like he’s tackled, it looks like he’s down. Oh, he’s gone. It looks like he can’t catch it, like he can’t do this. … There he goes. So I look at myself, I always look at myself as a playmaker.”

    NFL.com Video

Watch highlights from the Oakland Raiders’ 27-16 win over the Houston Texans.

The Texans got a field goal from Kris Brown early in the fourth quarter and had a chance to get even closer following a fumble by Russell at the 14. But with Houston needing 1 yard for a first down, Matt Schaub threw incompletions on third and fourth down to end the comeback bid.

Steve Slaton ran for 66 yards to give him 1,190 for the season, breaking Domanick Williams’ team record of 1,188 set in 2004.

Schaub was 19-for-36 for 255 yards and an interception, but connected only twice with NFL leading receiver Andre Johnson. Johnson came into the game with 103 receptions, but didn’t catch his first pass until early in the fourth quarter. He finished with two catches for 19 yards.

“It was a frustrating entire game, not making the plays we’re capable of making, and we’ve been able to make,” Schaub said. “We make those plays on a regular basis, and then when you go out there and you don’t do it, that’s tough to swallow.”

    Game notes
Raiders Pro Bowl CB Nnamdi Asomugha left the game in the fourth quarter with a sore neck. … Oakland scored TDs on the opening drive of both halves for the first time since Oct. 7, 2001, against Dallas. … Houston allowed its first punt return TD since Tennessee’s Adam “Pacman” Jones did it Oct. 29, 2006. … Texans TE Owen Daniels had seven catches for 111 yards.

I hope my feeling is wrong about the Titans game. I see us stuffing CJ many times for a loss than bam big Matt Forte or Frank Gore run, just like in the preseason.

    ——————————————————-

    Disagree.

Seymour and Henderson will play in front of Bryant week 1, and Scott is no longer WLB.

I think our run defense is going to be just fine.

So, I guess the coaches saw the same thing as most of us had – Veldheer as starting center. While he’s a rookie, he’ still a big upgrade over Satele.

You have a good point, Haven’t seen much of Seymour this preseason. It is promosing to think we haven’t even shown our best yet.

  122. Hobs Gnarly Says:

nope al davis draws up plays and throws away game plans practiced by the players during the week and gives them a new one on friday. al davis demands his players remain on the team, tho they don’t actually start because if they did, people would see they weren’t worth a damn and al davis destroys flagship franchises. oh and he’s got the worst record of any gm the last seven years running.

You watch Brown & Mitchell will be in the pro-bowl together representing the shield.

In fact I see all four Ware, Mcfadden, Brown, & Mitchell in the pro-bowl.

Glad to see Norris back also, all he does is be around the football, recovering fumbles, blocking punts (a lost art)… things that help a team win a game on special teams.
    ———————————-
Dumbest comment ive ever read….anyways, its all good stevie made p-squad. what i dont get is what happened to earning a roster spot by performance, regardless of draft position? You cant tell me stevie brown didnt earn a roster spot, but figurs/loper/ware/w.mcfadden did.Dont get me wrong, ware/mcfadden have shown potential, but they shouldve went to p-squad,not brown, because he EARNED the roster spot based on his play. Does that make sense?

Mike Mitchell is a game changer. The monster hit he put on Forsett last week, not only affected that play, but the play after when Forsett dropped an easy swing pass because that hit was still in his head when he heard foot steps.

Julius Jones out in Seattle after all
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 5, 2010 4:20 PM ET
It looks like we spoke too soon when we noted that Julius Jones survived roster cuts in Seattle on Saturday night.

Jones was disposed of on Sunday afternoon, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Safety Jordan Babineaux also got released as Seahawks G.M. John Schneider continued to take a machete to the team’s roster, bringing in as many new guys as possible.

(Jones and Babineux were due to make almost $5 million combined and both were reserves.)

With Jones out, Leon Washington and Justin Forsett will form an undersized running back committee in Seattle. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Seahawks add another back.
