Jackson helped get T.J. to Baltimore
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, September 7th, 2010 at 6:01 pm in Oakland Raiders.
It may have been inadvertant, but the glowing endorsement of quarterback Joe Flacco by Raiders offensive coordinator Hue Jackson played into the decision of wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh to sign with the Ravens.
“I don’t know if you all know, but me and Hue Jackson have a real good relationship, and Hue used to brag about the guy all the time. Brag about how good of a quarterback he was and his demeanor and his personality, and that’s why I was a little late,” Houshmandzadeh told reporters in Baltimore according to the Baltimore Sun after meeting with Flacco. “We were in there talking a little bit. It always helps when you’ve got a guy that can put the ball where it needs to be.”
Jackson was Flacco’s quarterbacks coach with the Ravens.
The Sun reported Houshmandzadeh chose the Ravens over the Raiders.

The stadium is fine,..we dont need a new one,…thats why we arent getting one…so there…thanks old kell for that link,..how did you learn to master your compter so well?…very impressive.
September 7th, 2010 at 6:41 pm
Inept?…hes a billionaire,..and you are on welfare,..but HE`s inept?…lol….youre an embarrassment old man.
September 7th, 2010 at 6:44 pm
The positives for the stadium are that it is one of the most easily accesible stadiums due to BART and the fact it is right of the highways.
But the PA and replay system are beyond terrible. The fact that it has the infield in it is embaressing, and the fact it is half empty half the time is even more embarressing.
A new stadium almost always brings out the fans, which increases the home-field advantage, which increases the teams wins to losses.
Something needs to be done in the next 5 years.
September 7th, 2010 at 6:47 pm
Vegas,..all that needs to be done is the Raiders need less crybabies as fans,..the infield dirt embarrasses you/…why?…the PA system…wtf…you just took the crown from old man kell dude.
September 7th, 2010 at 6:49 pm
JFB
The LA city council passes a resolution saying it would not deal with Al Davis
When the Raiders returned in 95′, he promptly sued the City of Oakland for 1 Billion dollars.
No municipality is going to deal with the Raiders as currently structured.
September 7th, 2010 at 6:51 pm
Thanks old kell,..coming from a janitor like yourself, your opinions really matter…they do matter, but only in mopping, floor waxing,…toilet scrubbing…thats your field dude,..keep with what you know,..cleaning supplies and crying and jealousy of Al Davis. Peace.
September 7th, 2010 at 6:51 pm

September 7th, 2010 at 6:52 pm

September 7th, 2010 at 6:55 pm
Why is it the losers jealous of Al Davis cry the most?

September 7th, 2010 at 6:56 pm
If the Raiders played in the type of stadium that the Cowboys had, they would have no trouble getting 60K+ to the games.
People would be coming from Eureka to Ensenada to see the joint.
Instead, they can’t even get 50K of people from the central valley to come out.
September 7th, 2010 at 6:58 pm
The Jacksonville Jaguars’ value fell 16 percent in 2009, sending the team to the bottom of the list with a value of $725 million. The Oakland Raiders, valued at $758 million, and the Minnesota Vikings, at $774 million, were near the bottom.
September 7th, 2010 at 6:59 pm
Interesting. Not the fact that Hue Jackson USED to speak highly of Flacco to Houshmanzadeh, but that Jerry would somehow try to tie it in to TJ’s decision to sign with the Ravens, like it was a conversation they recently had and it had an impact on that decision.
Here’s a thought; TJ Houshmanzadeh is 34 years old and in the twilight of his career. Maybe, just MAYBE, he looked at the Ravens and thought that they represented his best chance of getting a ring before he retired. My guess is that he fished around a little with the Raiders and the Redskins to see if he could get a two-year deal and when that wasn’t forthcoming he signed with the best team he could.
“Indvertent”? How about “irrelevant”?
September 7th, 2010 at 6:59 pm
Well because quite frankly scarlet very few of us give damn about your continued disdain for everything Mr Davis does. So you don’t like him we get it why do we have to put up with it day in day out. Move on or enjoy the team. No one is keeping you here against your will.
You hate him fine, now what else.
September 7th, 2010 at 7:02 pm

I’m not sure how I see the game unfolding but I think we ma have a better offense ezpecially if Bush plays. I’ll take our front7 maybe the entire defense. I’m starting to think it’s going to take teams abut 4 games to understand that this is a much better team than people realize.
VY is a good QB and CJ is ridiculous so the difference will be t/o’s or negative plays. It’ll be interesting to watch.
September 7th, 2010 at 7:32 pm
Titans, Home Opener, Hot & Humid. Normally the Raiders would lay down.
If they don’t, that would be huge, imo.

Hey guys I want the raiders to win but I don’t get why every hates on Vince Young so much. He was like 7-1 for the Titans and looked pretty accurate everytime I saw him play. He threw a lot of deep bombs that were right on target and were simply dropped by Nate Washington. Not saying hes one of the greatest, but don’t underestimate him when he plays the Raiders.
I would still like to see us win by any scores you have posted though.

September 7th, 2010 at 8:07 pm
My prediction:
Two JC turnovers have the team down 13-0 right before the half, but a reaggravation of the wrist injury causes him to depart.
Bruce leads a FG at the end of the half, to edge it to 13-3, than gives an amazing motivational speech at halftime.
We outscore the Titans 21-7 in the second half to edge them 24-20.
(Ok so the captain is setting in a little, but that’s the way I see it)
September 7th, 2010 at 8:07 pm

I agree with Guy. I think it would be a mistake to think he can’t hurt us that way. We’re going to have to score some points on Sunday, because as improved as the defense appears to be I don’t think they’re going to be able to keep Tennessee in the teens.

Raiders’ run defense will face two tests right off the bat, Titan’s Johnson & Rams’ Jackson.
Should the Raiders try to get in on the Haynesworth sweepstakes. Washington has put him on the block, they want two picks (I figure probably two od 2nd, 3rd, &/or 4th round). They have already paid him the $21 million dollar guarnateed money up front, this past April of 2010, so $$$ wise its proven all-pro who we will get for 3rd round dollars.

Raiders sign former NY Giant defensive tackle Jay Alford who got released 3 days ago in a deep positional battle. He’s a long snapper as well.
From ESPN NewYork:
Alford was one of the Giants’ more promising defensive players before tearing his ACL last preseason. He missed all of last season and was making his way back this preseason. But Alford, who had a monster sack on Tom Brady late in the Giants’ win over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, was a casualty of numbers.
The Giants are stacked at defensive tackle with Chris Canty, Barry Cofield, second-round pick Linval Joseph and Rocky Bernard. Bernard has come on strong the last two weeks of camp.

Jay Alford joins the Raiders
Posted by Mike Florio on September 8, 2010 4:08 AM ET
The post-September 4 roster churning continues.
A league source tells us that defensive tackle Jay Alford, a third-round pick of the Giants in 2007, has agreed to terms with the Raiders.
Alford missed all of 2009 with a knee injury suffered in the preseason. He appeared in every game of his first two seasons, with three starts in 2008.
Alford played in each of the Giants’ four preseason games in 2010.

out man out now that we’ve added a guy to the roster:
pick one!
Desmond Bryant, Ricky Brown, Thomas Howard, Sam Williams, Yamon Figurs or Nick Miller …
I’ll be pissed if it’s John Henderson
September 8th, 2010 at 5:17 am
Don’t know much about Alford, but I see he’s listed at 304 pounds. To me, that says 3-technique. I wonder if Desmond Bryant’s injury is worse than first appeared. It would make sense to sign a competent backup. I just really hope this has nothing to do with Seymour’s triceps trouble.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:23 am
Yamon should get the ax, IMO.
If they release Sam Williams, I would bet they would still be hoping to get a 6th or 7th rounder for Howard, and after they did, they would bring back Sam.
Don’t think they will release another D-line guy.
Alford was pretty good those few years, but coming off an ACL injury, wouldn’t want to assume he is any better than any of our current D-liners just yet.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:26 am
Who knows, maybe something strange will happen.
Release Trevor Scott or John Henderson, trade JLH.
Just cutting Yamon seems to logical.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:33 am
too logical I should say……..
Coffee!!!!!
September 8th, 2010 at 5:34 am
It won’t be a D-lineman because Alford isn’t 100% healthy.
Don’t they have to drop a player before adding one? Maybe they traded a palyer for a draft pick.

Carl…
when you add a Free Agent player you dont have to give something in return, such as a draft pick…
furthermore, you cant give up a draft pick to get a 54 man roster…
that means Alford is ours and we have to get rid of a player to ad him to our roster…
September 8th, 2010 at 5:45 am
Carl…
I just realized what you meant… if we traded a player I think it might be Thomas Howard, Titans is keen on him..
September 8th, 2010 at 5:45 am
I meant that maybe they traded a player off of the current roster to be able to add Alford.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:47 am

There’s no way they trade anybody to the Titans until after the game. Would not shock me a bit to see Howard go then, though.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:49 am
Interesting the Raiders signed this guy this week.
There is something about how if a player is on the roster week 1, his salary is mostly guaranteed for the year, but after week 1 it is not for the whole year.
Must have plans for him to stick around, or they didn’t think he would be around in a week.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:51 am
Maybe someone should ask Andy Slater.
Who has a twitter account? Lets get the semi-pro’s up and running here!!
September 8th, 2010 at 5:52 am
Found this scouting report on Alford:
Assets: An athletic tackle with superb versatility. Specializes in collapsing the pocket, using a quick first step and a lot of energy to break through the line and get after the quarterback.
Flaws: A one-dimensional defender as he focuses strictly at disrupting up the middle. Doesn’t pick up the run well. Needs to improve his overall technique.
That sounds a lot like Desmond Bryant to me. I still don’t wonder if he’s more injured than they’ve been letting on.
September 8th, 2010 at 5:56 am
could the trade not have a clause that the Titans was not to use him in week one?
September 8th, 2010 at 5:57 am
Alford is just as injured if not more than Bryant..
September 8th, 2010 at 6:11 am
I’m not impressed with Desmond Bryant or his gimpy elbow. not as a DT anyways
We have no depth at DE after letting Richardson, Cooper & Gunheim all walk …
Trevor Scott gets abused against the run as a DE so we have no depth for base end if Shaughnessy or Houston get hurt or need a breather. Move Bryant to DE
one of these guys should get walking papers today:
Ricky Brown, Thomas Howard, Sam Williams, Yamon Figurs or Nick Miller …
Nick Miller is the only guy on this list eligible for the practice squad (just a thought)

Jay Alford? I don’t think we needed this guy with Seymour, Bryant as the two 3-techs.
I hope that they aren’t looking for more “athletic” lineman again. You need a big guy to clog the middle.
If they release John Henderson, then you will know the Raiders haven’t learned a damn thing about defense over the last 7 years.
Rushing the passer isn’t EVERYTHING…you can’t stop the run….you can’t win
September 8th, 2010 at 6:15 am
Is it not enough that they already have 3 – 3-techs on the roster in Seynour, Kelly and Bryant.
Guess they want that athletic look….so you can get pushed up and down the field.
Keep Henderson and keep developing that Heard kid.
September 8th, 2010 at 6:17 am
nose tackle isn’t just based upon FAT
it’s all about strength and technique. leverage
compare Terdell Sands & Jay Ratliff
just because you guys haven’t heard of Fred Robbins & Jay Alford, doesn’t mean the Giants didn’t have a nose tackle on their 4 man line with Mike Waufle as DL Coach
Tuck & Cofield were the 3 techs

Rockstar,
Good point on the fact that a nose tackle doesn’t have to be “Fat”….
I guess with the importance of height/weight/speed in the calculations here…sometimes I just look for a player that doesn’t fit the classic Raider mold for a sign of the decision making.
You know if Davis really had his way there would be 2 defensive end types in the tackle positions and two converted linebackers on the ends…..with hybrid safety guys manning all 3 linebacker positions.

They didn’t have one guy who was a Vince Wilfork, Sam Adams type of blocker-absorber.
Sure on different plays, some guys in the middle would take on the two blockers per say, but it was a constant rotation of guys, that just beat their man and penetrated upfield and made plays.
At times they wouldn’t have a guy over 300 pounds on the whole line, and they stopped the run good enough to win a Super Bowl.
That’s the approach here. You really think TK is going to go into things looking to just absorb blockers? Didn’t you watch his interview in the 49ers game, he said 0-tech or 3-tech, it’s all the same to him?

September 8th, 2010 at 6:47 am
JFB,
If the Raiders didn’t rank last or near last every stinking year against the run….I’d be more open to these other methods.
The only consistency in Oakland is D-Lineman getting single blocked, O-Lineman mauling linebackers…and the high safety getting juked or just plain run over.
Week after week after week after week.
That’s why Marshall talked Davis into getting Houston on the line and having Shaughnessy start opposite….keeping Big John Henderson and developing this Heard kid.
Raiders aren’t very good with unconventional of late…which has me concerned about Veldheer….so why not try the blocker absorber in the middle.
Everyone can’t rush the passer on every down.
Gore and that Bears running back scorched the Raiders.
And yet the Michael Huff gets all the blame.
That’s why this team has been ATROCIOUS at stopping the run
September 8th, 2010 at 6:57 am
You really think TK is going to go into things looking to just absorb blockers? Didn’t you watch his interview in the 49ers game, he said 0-tech or 3-tech, it’s all the same to him?
***
if Kelly is a nose tackle, he needs to eat up blockers and allow other guys to make a play. He needs to fill gaps on the interior D-Line so we don’t have RB’s running untouched up the gut for 5 yards before McClain or Huff miss & get blamed on a 89 yard TD
TK said it himself in a different interview. It’s all on the D-Line to force Chris Johnson outside so the LB’s & DE’s can clobber him. In that same interview you referred to I think he said “i’m strong enough”
Cable called Kelly a nose tackle. thats what he is. the Raiders have one under Waufle, just like the Giants did under Waufle
could the Raiders have a 4 man line of Shaughnessy-Houston-Scott-Groves on occasion? sure. probably in obvious passing situations, but for the most part expect Kelly, Henderson or Alford to be on the field at all times … especially since we ranked 29th against the run last year!
September 8th, 2010 at 7:00 am
Breaking down the D-line:
Seymour still has gas in the tank and should be solid against the run and pass.
Kelly is probably in the best shape og his life and it’s also been 2+ years since his knee surgery. Should have his best season.
Shaugnessy showed a lot of promise last year and will only benefit from Seymour and Kelly in the middle.
Houston is a big DE rookie that looked good so far but is an unknown.
Scott is a very good pass rusher, period.
Bryant takes a beating around here but I feel he is good vs. the pass and run and provides nice depth at DT.
Henderson has a rep comparable to Sam Adams or Jerry Ball or Grady Jackson. And he’s only 31. On average a DT with his success should have 2 or 3 more good years.
Wimbley and Groves can also play end.
Alford is just depth at what should be a strong point for this team.
September 8th, 2010 at 7:01 am
TK lost 35 pounds, and when asked about the switch to 0-zech from the 3, he said the blocking is pretty much the same and it doesn’t really matter.
Of course each situation is different, and at times he will be asked to do this. Henderson will be in the game on obvious run downs, and probably with an extra blocker on the line or a TE, so his role will be completely different.
But first and 10, TK is going to be looking to penetrate and make a play in the backfield, 99% of the time, no matter where he lines up.
September 8th, 2010 at 7:04 am
They didn’t have one guy who was a Vince Wilfork, Sam Adams type of blocker-absorber.
***
Fred Robbins was the NT in New York. thats a fact
as stated before: not a Pro Bowler like you’ve brought up, but good enough to get the job done
just because you haven’t heard of a guy doesn’t mean he isn’t doing his job

Rumor is that Goethel is out for 5 -7 more weeks
We gave up 3 or 4 big running plays in the preseason (all with RoMac in he game) because the ILB over ran the play. I am not ready to give up on him, but it’s time for him to play as smart as everybody claims he is.
