Pears cut to make room for Alford
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, September 8th, 2010 at 11:34 am in Oakland Raiders.
Offensive lineman Erik Pears was released to make room for Jay Alford, the defensive tackle who the Raiders signed Wednesday.
It was a minor surprise in that Pears was the backup right tackle as well as an extra tight end in short-yardage. The Raiders have only two tight ends on the roster, Zach Miller and Brandon Myers.
Alford said his role has always been that of a pass rushing defenive tackle and that’s how he expects to make his mark with the Raiders.
More to come later . . .

Bryant wasn’t that good this preseason IMO.

I just can’t understand why Waufle and Marshall don’t see this overwhelming hole at NT. Wassup with all these 3 techs?

i dont get it either, we are deep in 3 techs, with only one guy who can truly play the NT in henderson…
September 8th, 2010 at 11:40 am
Is that really saying that you think J Ford will be the best of the bunch?
September 8th, 2010 at 11:40 am
so much for using him an an extra blocking TE!
now we’re light at FB & TE and heavy on WR & LB …
not good since Zach Miller had multiple concussions last year and Marcel Reece is a fat wide receiver

Thec: Figurs spent last year with the Bucs & Lions
In 2008 Hue Jax & Yamon Figurs were both in Baltimore, but Jackson was the QB Coach – not OC or WR Coach
I don’t know that Figurs is his “boy” …
he’s a poor man’s JLH imo

Murphy, DHB, and Ford will be the next generation of Raider Receivers!
Mark my words Raider Nation!
September 8th, 2010 at 11:44 am
Alford is here as insurance until J-Rich and Bryant are 100% healthy, nothing more.
Pears is awful, too many penalties. Any of our lumbering tackles can come in as blocking TE. My recommendation would be Bruce Campbell, I’ll bet he gets up the field to put a helmet on someone in a hurry.
We still need a better RB option than Bennett and Cartwright, get on those phones AL!
September 8th, 2010 at 11:44 am
Ok Thec …
I’m going with DHBeast myself.
Regardless, I think those will be our top 3 guys for years to come, and they will all be good IMO.

Obviously Al thinks we can stop the run with two 3 tech DTs on the field at the same time. Since we have not had a decent NT for years, I assume Al will continue to ignore the NT position.

The Raiders have always drafted well in the later rounds.
Hell, I wouldn’t mind if every year they traded their 1st and 2nd rounders for proven veterans and more later-round picks, and then just drafted in the 3rd round and later.
To be honest, that’s the only way you can get anything close to a “sure thing” out of high draft picks.
________________________________________________________
Great post! I totally agree it has been my opinion for several years. Last year, when people here wanted me to pick a 1st round guy I really didnt want to, because of that same reason…
The best teams load up 3rd and 4th round picks, by trades of players or picks. So a late 2nd round pick and a mix of four 3rd and 4th is worth way more than two early 1st round picks… IMO

G Chris Stewart is a beast.
NT Ian Williams is reminiscent of Wilfork.
Raiders scouts, take note. At least one of these guys should be there in the second round.

Watching Bennett go nowhere against the Seattle scrubs was a very bad omen for our rushing offense without Mike Bush. I would rather see us get Rankin to field kicks and spell Bennett, and cut Cartwright. The Rock has shown me nothing so far…

Bring in another TE and cut Figurs.
You can sign a player off another team’s practice squad if you add him to your 53-man roster, correct? If so, the Raiders should look at Bear Pascoe. Solid blocking TE.

My theory (or lack of) regarding all the 3 tech players is that a few teams are incorporating a new D-line scheme where all down linemen are DE’s to rush the QB better. Maybe the Raiders know that they only have 1 true NT and they will be a team that pressures the QB. But that’s just IMO.

This blocking TE notion …
Brandon Meyers is our #2 TE.
Pears came in as an extra Olineman, not TE.
I think Cable called it his jumbo package.
In the preseason games, there was often 3 OTs on the field. Henderson and Walker would move next to each other with Pears filling in wherever the starter moved from.
By the way, I thought that was the most ridiculous thing I had seen and matter of factly thought this is something that would have Cable on his way to being fired!
Campbell got hurt behind that BS. Remember Langston on the left side with his back turned while Willis was running right next to him?

I predict that Murphy will be a downfield threat. I still think DHB has really bulked up so he will be able to cath the ball sideline to sideline. Chaz will work his way over the middle if he ever stays healthy. J Ford will also be a deep threat. The future looks good it is the now that I worry about, It takes time to develop a good WR unless they are just a natural. DHB,Ford &Murphy need 1 more yr.Zach Miller is our best WR.

Yeah, Bennett SUCKS plain and simple. Loved him on the goal line, going down like a big lump of lumpiness. He’s just a big blob of blobbiness. A big glob of goopidy gloppiness. Scientifically speaking.
