Scott, Groves, Figurs get nods

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, September 8th, 2010 at 3:16 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders coach Tom Cable said in his post-practice press briefing Wednesday that Trevor Scott would start at right defensive end over Matt Shaughnessy, Quentin Groves would start at weakside linebacker and Yamon Figurs would return both kickoffs and punts.

Cable did not rule running back Michael Bush out for Sunday’s game. Bush was limited in practice Wednesday, as was Desmond Bryant (elbow).

Those who did not participate were Chaz Schilens (knee), Travis Goethel (lower back) and Walter McFadden (hamstring).

It was the first disclosure of the injuries to Goethel and McFadden, although Cable would not elaborate whether Goethel had surgery or if the injuries held long-term ramifications.

More to come . . .

With Figurs returning kick offs and punts, what is the over/under on fumbles?

  3. El Tato Says:

I like better Shaughnessy over Scott at RE, Scott is a pass rusher, Shaughnessy looked better run stopper from that position and also is a good pass rusher.

CJ2k gets off too a ridiculous start. Right over T Scotts side.

Why they are trying to force this kid down our throats makes NO snese.

ShoNasty will be starting by back with the ones by the 2nd qtr.

  12. crister Says:

wow, figurs must have been terring it up in practice because he’s given no indication that he’s anything more than so-so in the preseason. then again, maybe the raiders told him to suck on purpose?

I would never work for Al Davis, Fat Kidd. I’d sooner take a job at Burger King. More dignity.

    **************************************************************************************

Maybe McDonald’s is the better choice. That way, when you get a call from Raiders HQ for a few cheeseburgers late at night during a head coach search, you can poison them, kill Al Davis, and finally shut the f*&k up.

  14. M Lonetree Says:

man, some of you guys are like stock privateers…a cicada sneezes in Patagonia so you bail on the Hong Kong market. or a rainstorm misses a harvest in Uganda so you amp up the volume in Brussels. sheesh.

plain and simple. the Raiders have to man up and beat their opponents in each individual battle and cover for your brethren while they’re at it.
worrying ’bout who is and who ain’t and what little flea of a running back or sub-prime longhorn QB is out there doesn’t win a damned thing.
screw it. man up and do it.

    Raider on.

  15. Pretty Rick Says:

I thought Shaughnessy would lead the team in sacks this year with all of the attention most likely being focused on Seymour & Houston, so now Scott takes the starting spot? I think Scott’s one of Cable’s pet favorites. I think he should be inserted strictly to pass rush & nothing more but hey!,,,Groves came outta nowhere to take the starting LB spot, but I dont think we’ve seen the last of Thomas Howard. 9-7 great accomplisment,,10-6 would exceed expectations. Im cool with either one.

  16. Thec07 Says:

Scott taking the starting spot is window dressing to this chess match…. Not a real matter of who starts, Shaug could be in the game after the first play…

I need to get a better understanding why Scott is starting over Matt I just don’t get that one. Figurs is going to get us beat if he puts the ball on the ground like has. They must be moving Matt back to LDE and using Houston some inside. That’s the only thing I can come up with.

  20. Coach on Wheels Says:

Matt and Scott will be rotating and changing spots all game anyway. Starter = 1 play.

    Prediction:
CJ will get one big run but be held in check. VY looks poor in preseason when pressured. Defensive battle that may hinge on one big turnover. Titans should win at home with 10am start. Titans secondry is weak if o-line can keep front 7 in check.

Raiders get a last minute TD or FG and upset 17-16. I hope.

    24-20 Raiders. They “hold” CJ2K to 125 and 2 td’s.

Kell – What’s wrong with Shaugnessy? Haven’t heard about him being hurt.

Don’t like Scott starting at DE vs. best RB in football at all.

  25. priesttj Says:

    Cristen

A lot of jobs are won and lost in practice us fans aren’t privy to that. This move is gameplan related no question but still Figurs scares the heck out of me. He carries the ball in his right hand only. He wont switch it like most runners when running left r right. He just carries it in his right hand loosely.

  26. KoolKell Says:

They’ve got Scott at one DE spot and Houston at the other.

  27. Thec07 Says:

I dont see those Scott,or Shuag staying at one end spot or the other, as HOUSTON was played both DE spots in one series…

  28. Thec07 Says:

Coach, Do you see us stacking the box?

  29. Pretty Rick Says:

Cj will be held to just over 80yds rushing. Huff gets the first pick of the season. D-Bey has 4 catches no tds, Murphy & Miller get a Td a piece. Seabass gets 2 fgs. Raiders win 20-13,,,oh D-Mac gets 85yds rushing & 1 fumble, & a holding call will negate a big play for the Raiders,,but we still win 20-13.

  30. RaidersPhan-405 Says:

    Interesting concept…

I can see us playing a lot more 3-4-4 with Wimbley or Seymour playing end and MM in the box with Huff/Branch over the top…

  31. El Tato Says:

I like Scott, the guy came out of nowhere to lead the team in sacks 2 years in a row, but I dont think he is a full time DE, he will be rotating with Shaughnessy the whole game.

  32. KoolKell Says:

Titans have a tough front 7.

Jeff Fisher is a tough D Coach.

We have the same O-line as last year, except now we have a Green Center.

Can that O-line handle the stunts and blitzes coming their way Sunday?

  33. El Tato Says:

We could be playing a 3 man front, with Scott being a LB close to the line

  34. RaidersPhan-405 Says:

stunts and blitzes – Much different and fortunate for Jared that Tenn plays a 4-3, not a 3-4.

  35. Raider E Says:

27-14 Raiders, Figurs takes a punt to the house, DMac gets loose on a screen for a TD, DHB goes deep and hauls in a 50+ yard TD pass, Jano kicks a couple chip shots. Titans get one long run from CJ and score a garbage time TD.

  36. Thec07 Says:

Down and distance… Putting the right personell in at the right time…

  37. El Tato Says:

We could be playing a 3 man front, with Scott being a LB close to the line. Kelly, Seymour and Houston, all 3 have played DT and DE in their careers. With Scott in one side and Wimbley at the other its an hybrid 3-4 defense

A muffed punt and wide open drop against the ‘Hawks? How is Figurs the guy picked to return kickoffs and punts? At some point don’t you have to go with a slower/less explosive returner in exchange for ball security?

That’s gotta be the biggest question, more so even than CJ’s yardage. The more three and outs, the worse it’s gonna be for our run D.

  46. Raider E Says:

Figurs showed some burst on a couple returns, lets just hope he can hold the ball. He was by far the best return man minus ball security. We kept the ball on both fumbles, so I guess teh coaches are thinking no harm no foul lol….

  47. Coach on Wheels Says:

Thec – Oh yeah. The Titans have a weak WR core and VY is the kinda of QB that plays poor under pressure. Gap control is key though. When you stack the box if the RB pops thru it is all she wrote.

Matt S got torched by Gore in SF game. The next week Scott was at DE. Again Matt will get plenty of plays. D-line is the one area “starter” matters the least in the NFL. PLUS, Scott is a better fit to suddenly stand-up in a zone-blitz combo with a LB blitzing while he drops.

  52. ArmChair GM Says:

Run defense, turnovers, and special teams are the key to us winning this game.

No big kickoff or punt returns. Janikowski needs touchbacks as often as possible. Limit Chris Johnson and don’t turn the ball over and we should win in Tennessee.

  53. Raider E Says:

I agree shark, just trying to see the decision making process from the coaches perspective?

  54. kidseven Says:

Scott over Sho-nasty? Figurs returning punts and kickoffs? What the hell? You seriously gotta wonder sometimes.

What else, exactly, could Figurs have done to prove he was unreliable and unlikely to succeed in that role?

Any sign of that toolbox Brian the Genital lately? Just wondering what new laughably tough blog nickname he’s chosen for himself this time.

If he’s not here, I’m sure he’s busy getting kicked around by a troupe of ornery girl scouts.

  56. ArmChair GM Says:

Did you miss the T Scott LB experiment? It was terrible! Couldn’t stay with a RB in te flat, lost contain on 2 reverses, over ran his gap ( along with the great RoMac) leading to 3 huge runs in preseason, got blown up by smaller RB’s trying to block him.
He can speed rush the QB. That’s IT!!!

I think more than anything Scott gives us a 3/4 look on D it’s no knock against Matt at all. He played well and they were switching them in and out all preseason so it’s an easy do. They’ve been toying with a 3 man front all off season. It gives them more flexability on D. They’re going to blitz and confuse VY and try to force t/o’s. It’s just that it caught me by surprise this early.
