Season on the line, already. Beat the Rams or it will definitely be 8 straight disastrous season.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:06 pm
This team needs a clinic on some basic football fundamentals: blocking and tackling. I didn’t see much of either today.

If they don’t give this TD to Calvin Johnson of the Lions the dorks in the NFL have officially taken over.

Two totally different situations.

We,meaning the Raiders to most of you, will win the next couple of weeks and many on here will be back on the wagon.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:14 pm
Same thing we say every year: if only we had an O line that could block and a defense that could make tackles. This game could have been much better if those two had happened.

Let’s start predicting what priest is going to say tonight. I’ll go first:
“You fools don’t know anything. You sit here talking about things you don’t know anything about. I’ve seen Campbell play. I’ve seen the kid. And I know he wasn’t himself today. First week jitters. You watch this kid is going to be league MVP this year. As far as the line goes, if you idiots knew anything about football you’d know that our line was using a zone tech 46 cut block technique, due to the fact that we were playing a D line with 6 technique cover 2 zone blitz package apples and bananas. Considering those factors, our o line looked pretty solid today. We just missed a couple of gaps in the 3 technique two zone ramma zamma 65 ramma tamazam. But of course you idiots don’t know anything about football you just watch the games and watch the team get killed in plain sight and talk about it. I know what’s going on. The Raiders played solid today. “

September 12th, 2010 at 1:18 pm
Again, the defense didn’t play all that poorly. But you simply cannot expect the starters to be on the field for 80% of the game and still perform at a high level. Especially when they’re playing man-to-man almost exclusively.
Keep the offense on the field for more than three downs at a time, and the defense will continue to perform the way they did in the first quarter.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:18 pm
I have watched this garbage for the last 7 years, i have been a fan since 1967, but i cannot take much more of this!! I thought all the offensive woes were JaMarcus fault? He’s gone, and its still the same lousy excuse for professional football that i have EVER seen. I am ashamed to call myself a Raider fan!!! Where is their pride????
September 12th, 2010 at 1:18 pm
Lots of work needed if the team is going to be competitive. No aggression on offense as far as attacking the defense. I miss the old Marc Trestman offense instead of the Baltimore System. Veldheer is not ready to start but it doesn’t look like we have any options. The OLine is a train wreak. The defense looked better than last year but was put in the same situations as last year. Something has to give. I really don’t want Cable to be fired because that just means that Jackson takes over and his offense stinks. So when does Andrew Luck graduate?

How can anyone single out Veldheer when so many things are wrong with the offensive line? Henderson, Carlisle, and Walker all played worse than a rookie starting his first game at a new position. Did Gallery even make it through the game without throwing out his back?
Sure, on any other team Veldheer might not be starting. Yes, he had growing pains. That bad snap was on him entirely. But y’all seem to forget that Satele lost the starting job all on his own. And with that said, even today Satele would have been far from the worst performer on the offensive line.
It starts with the offensive tackles, who have never been able to handle the outside pass rush, and continue to make bonehead penalties. When the veterans can’t even do their jobs, I find it hard to place too much of the blame on the rookie center.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:27 pm
signing Jake Grove………(see Langston Walker). NO MORE RETREADS!! If you stunk it up the first time you don’t get get a redo. While we are at it maybe we should sign Stew Schweigert and the entire roster of the Omaha Nighthawks.

top to bottom the worst team in the n.f.l. mclain is garbage on d and the o-line is just lost. funny thing about that is tom cable looked just as lost if not worse. ill have to hear it tomorow at work being tha i live outskirts of nashville. what a bummer.

Neither one worked. Need new O linemen.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Did you watch the game??
#1 – Veldheer would DEFINITELY not be starting on any other team.. and would be lucky to even see some garbage time..
#2 – 3 botched snaps… TWO of them… I don’t even know who he was snapping them to… they were 10 feet over Campbells head…
oh yea.. and this
#3 (the best one) – Rememeber the play when Veldheer botched the snap count and snapped it to Campbell and Campbell had this surprised look and hesitated then realized that Veldheer REALLY is that far off and had to take a knee to avoid the penalty.. AMAZING..
Singling out Veldheer is EASY because he was absolutely AWFUL!!!
September 12th, 2010 at 1:31 pm
i think if you can blame the o-line for bad q.b. play then you ought to be able to blame o-line for bad running game. that being said dmac did all that running on his own. only brite spot on team.

I’ve watched ten minutes, if we can’t beat them, we may not win 3 games this year.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:36 pm

September 12th, 2010 at 1:38 pm
Don’t blame Veldheer for being a rookie playing out of position. It takes 11 players working together to get the job done. As far as the O-line is concerned I would bench both Carlisle and Henderson (he is the main reason the pocket kept collapsing). Move Veldheer to LT where he belongs. Start Bruce Campbell at RG and re-sign Morris to play C. Maybe if the coaches would coach players at their regular spots instead of making “projects” out of everyone we might get somewhere. We keep this up it will be 8 seasons in a row at 11+ losses.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:38 pm
raiders need to start hitting in practice, no if’s and’s and but’s. it’s no wonder they look unprepared, they are. if they don’t see hits they get soft.

September 12th, 2010 at 1:41 pm
Oh come on man. It was easy to see that wasn’t Russell back there. Jason completed over half his passes for 180 yards.
I still believe he could’ve had a better game if he wasn’t under so much pressure all the time. He’s not Peyton Manning, but he is still an upgrade.
You Gradkowski pumpers just can’t accept that he is a backup QB. He’s built like a backup. He is not a 16 game per season QB. The guy even looks like a Doug Flutie for christ sake.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:41 pm
Jason Campbell is a sissy.
If he puts his head down and goes for the first down instead of sliding first half, then he lifts the whole team, but he plays like he’s wearing a tutu.
Wont take long for her to hear it next week.

September 12th, 2010 at 1:42 pm
Three keys to winning:
1. Defense
2. O-line
3. Coaching
In Davis’ mind: ONLY coaching is to blame… personnel is always good enough to win.
Hard reality: Belichick, Payton, even Lombardi couldn’t win in this environment, and we all know why.
Anyway, it’s only one game but whatta letdown.

September 12th, 2010 at 1:42 pm

September 12th, 2010 at 1:42 pm
Good news first:
Defense is actually a good defense. They really bottled up CJ negating the one big run for a TD. They were on the field way too much.
Bad news:
Huff killed the defense being out of position multiple times.
The offense is horrific and 90% of that is on the offensive line. The rookie will make some mistakes as expected (maybe too many this game) but he pass protects better than the others. Henderson, Walker and CC were all BADDDDD!!!!
Campbell looked pretty bad and a lot has to do with the Oline but he looked real jittery and out of sync back there.
You can’t get the ball to the WRs or TEs if you are not getting the protection you need. And it was not there at all! Not even ZM could get in the game the protection was so bad.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:43 pm
Next week is the big week!! If we lose to the Rams at home its going to be a long season. Lets face it this
was a tough matchup for the Raiders.
1. Titans finished 8-2 last year and always tough at home.
2. Veldheer is a rookie. I’m willing to give him a break and hoping to see some growth. Satele stinks.
3. What really was disturbing was Campbell. Taking a knee when there was no penalty? The early slide when he was running for the first down? Staring down the receiver like a rookie on that interception? All he needs to do is manage the game properly and the Raiders can win. Today he played like a rookie. It better change next week.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:43 pm
Agreed that campbell needs to suck it up when running for the 1st down marker.
Don’t slide short if you’re within a yard.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:43 pm
Tom Cable should be fired after this game for 1. Not signing Hartwig.. 2. going in with a 6′8 rookie C from a D-II school… 3. not taking Veldheer out after killing a few drives with botched snaps.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:43 pm

Last eight opening days:
Optimism = high
Raider Fans = Charlie Brown
Raiders = Lucy
You just KNOW Lucy’s gonna pull the ball away before Charlie kicks it, but Charlie gets sucked in anyway…
OL played badly, but Jason Campbell – he looked JaMarcus-esque out there on several plays.
Al, time to hunt for some OL help and pronto. Jackson, you better get into Jason’s head and fast. How many dumpoffs were there today officially? TOO MANY. Need to take some shots down the field in this offense. Cable, you better have this team turned around by game four, or adious. The one TV shot of Al before halftime, it looked like he mouthed “Find out… (not sure from there). An assistant got up and trotted out of the room. Al was expecting WAY more than what he saw. This looks to be *another* long season…
September 12th, 2010 at 1:44 pm
Other good news: DMAC worked his ass off today. Kudos to him. That was a valiant effort. Ran really hard and broke tackles.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:44 pm
O Line. Six f&*king linemen to keep the Titans out of the pocket – and even then they couldn’t keep ‘em out. Can’t win many games with that mess up front.

Other good news: McClain is the real deal.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:45 pm
Wow….you guys are going IN.
I think this was a REALITY CHECK game. Nothing more.
Veldheer did what I would expect from a rookie that has been playing the position for, what, 3 weeks. Mental mistakes, but he wasn’t physically overmatched out there. He will be better.
McFadden…showed he can be the workhorse back for one game.
Run defense…mixed at best. There were some gains that only Johnson could make, but the backup got more yards than he should’ve.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:45 pm
Thanks RaidingTexas. That’s right, I could have played better for my old team if the o-line gave me more time to execute a play. C’mon o-line give me more time … like maybe five minutes. Lead, follow or get the F### out of the way.

September 12th, 2010 at 1:47 pm
OL stunk, yes, but Gradkowski would have made some plays in there. OL is #1 need and area of concern, but we saw several sparks from Bruce at QB last year and in preseason. Campbell didn’t take near enough shots, only dump offs. I would have liked to seen Grads in there today.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:47 pm
The protection wasn’t all bad. There were plenty of times he had time, and dumped off.
September 12th, 2010 at 1:49 pm
I agree, though, that it’s time to move on from Cable. He was a decent coach for the offensive line, but like Perry Fewel, he’s a guy who shouldn’t have stuck around beyond the interim.
Who do you replace him with, though? Hue Jackson? Maybe, but if he’s limited to using the same playbook the Raiders have been using for the last ten years, elevating Jackson isn’t going to make the difference.
Trade away any and all the draft picks necessary to fix the offensive line with solid veterans who know their roles. Give Jason Campbell this season and next season to finally settle into an offensive scheme, except this time with proper pass protection. Then we’ll see what the Raiders really have with this defense and these offensive skill players.

Kell, the problem is not being at the game, you can’t really see what’s going on with downfield receivers even when Campbell had good protection. Could be blown routes, no separation, double coverage, any number of things.

Other good news: McClain is the real deal.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Ummm….. yea.. he was absolutely DESTROYED on that Ringer TD and he was completely pushed out of the play on the CJ 78 yd TD…consistent with preseason… he has looked bad
***************************
Dont think that was on McClain. Huff was out of position AGAIN!!!! Which is why he got pulled. If you watch the replay you’ll see Huff on the other side on McClain covering NO ONE on the crowed side of the field! Totally out of position. I could be wrong but highly doubt it. Thats why he got pulled.
1st play he was out of position vis a vis Vince Yound and it continued here and there throughout the game.
McClain actually made a number of good plays out there.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
If you are talking about the Ringer run…. absolutely not… Do not try to defer accountability just because Huff was out of position… because all that means is TWO people were owned on the same play.. OK?
Watch the replay on the Ringer run… McClain has 1 on 1 blocking and gets absolutely STOOD up and turned.. and that is exactly the play we drafted him to make… the guy is 6′3 and 260… STUFF THE HOLE!! The only plays he made this guy was when he was unimpeded… No pass for McClain today.
******************************
Oh, was talking about the CJ long TD run if I remember correctly McClain getting blocked on that run and Huff on the other side of him. I think it was that run. (And Branch didn’t wrap up). But I know for sure it was a long run and Huff rand to the wrong side of the defense.

Nation,
Put the sole blame as of now on the play of the O-Line as of now.
Don’t start with the other stuff….yet!
The O-Line was atrocious.
However, if the O-Line improves a bit and Campbell doesn’t take advantage in the coming weeks, then I would love to see good ol Grads takeover!
He has good pocket awareness, is gritty and all he does is MAKE PLAYS when he is in there!

I’m hoping McClain rocks but he only had 4 solo tackles today. You guys have got to give Veldheer a pass. He is basically playing a new position in a hostile environment. I know Jake Grove is available, but the Phins released him because he was getting outplayed and Grove hurt his shoulder (he is injury prone). Maybe Veldheer can be the next Mosebar.
^^^^^^^
The next Mosebar?? Just like JC is the next Plunkett?
Enough of that!
Jared should NOT have been starting at Center….PERIOD!
What old man Al and Cable need to do, is start him at RT!
September 12th, 2010 at 2:05 pm
Mr. Jason Campbell definately holds the ball too long, which accounted for two sacks, but I think some of that is the play calling wherein the Raiders are wanting to throw deep.
Two sacks were clearly all Mario getting beat, the first sack he gave up where Jason had no chance and fumbled, I do not even think Mario Henderson looked to his outside shoulder to see the DE blasting right by him into his quarterback.

I’m not sure that moving Veldheer to the outside is that great of an idea, either, to be honest. He’ll get exposed by speedy outside pass rushers pretty quickly.
If we’re going to be advocating letting the guy learn on the job, might as well do it at center where he has help on either side of him.

J Hill I agree with your offensive line,
Mr. Khalif Barnes needs to start at LT, or Jason Campbell will be knocked out again, this time for the season; I like Loper at G, he plays hard and he plays smart (either side), If the Raiders are going to run shotgun then Satele needs to start, Mr. Walker should play guard opposite of Loper, Mr. Vehldeer needs to start though either at C, LT, or RT.
September 12th, 2010 at 2:11 pm
I saw the same thing Terrapin. His problems are mainly lack of chemistry with the QB – understandable given how quickly he was thrown into this and didn’t even get to play the last preseason game. He blocked well enough every time I payed attention to him during a play. I see reason to believe in him going forward, but it may be rough for awhile.
September 12th, 2010 at 2:12 pm
Drew Brees-6′0 209 lbs.

September 12th, 2010 at 2:13 pm
Trade for McNeil, trade for Mankins. I’m not sure either the Chargers or the Pats would mind taking Raider draft picks in return for non-skill position players.
And let’s face it, it’s not like the Raiders would do much with those draft picks anyway. The most important holes that need to be filled are on the offensive line, and you know that Al is going to take a FS or CB in the second round.
September 12th, 2010 at 2:14 pm
Mr. Vehldeer’s blocking was great, he needs to continue to start.
We must not move him from position to position from game to game though, wherever he starts vs. the Rams next week, is where he should start the rest of the season whether it be Center or either tackle position.

Glad someone else can see that, Terrapin. This game would’ve been much easier to stomach if the line consistently blocked well. Tennessee is a good team and would’ve been difficult to beat at home regardless. But the point differential comes down to three persistent problems at Oakland: penalties, blocking and tackling.

On pace to throw for 300+ yards and an 83 QB rating against Washington.
Against Dallas only scored 7 points. JC? Scored 6 points combined in TWO GAMES against Dallas last year.

September 12th, 2010 at 2:31 pm
sure the raiders stunk it up today, but what i find just as disheartening is the way most seem to be giving up already.shouldn’t we at least wait a few weeks before writing off the season?
September 12th, 2010 at 2:31 pm
Campbell never got the memo. He has gotten carted off, fumbled 5 times already between preseason and regular season, and has just resigned to checking down as a way to offset it.
—————————————————–
So I guess the BBQs and bowling didn’t help?
All that off the field team building and still nothing from the WRs?
September 12th, 2010 at 2:31 pm
What it is…is this line as a whole….are TERRIBLE man to man blockers on a 4 down series basis!
Don’t try and have them block man to man from the start of the game because they will get BEAT,,,,BAD!
September 12th, 2010 at 2:32 pm
a few observations:
Branch can’t cover Scaife and where was Mike Mitchell on the play? rushing the QB …
CJ’s 2nd rushing TD was right at ShoNasty & Eugene. he walked right into the endzone (I thought Scott & Huff were the weak links on run D?)
CJ’s first TD was right at Wimbley & Branch … Hmmm

If Gradkowski was the man, they wouldn’t have replaced him or started him here.

Grads is a nice story for you Rudy type followers…the real world doesn’t work that way…never has…Gradkowski will exhibit the attributes that made him a 3x cut QB

Disagree. Branch has much more speed than Huff and Mitchell. And he can tackle better than Huff. I don’t see him making the same mistakes Huff makes over and over again. (Although Huff did make 1 or 2 really good plays today).

Oh come on man. It was easy to see that wasn’t Russell back there. Jason completed over half his passes for 180 yards.
*****AIG – BS! The majority of those comps were dumpoffs at the end of the first half and end of game. he couldnt even execute the screens today.
I still believe he could’ve had a better game if he wasn’t under so much pressure all the time. He’s not Peyton Manning, but he is still an upgrade.
***Aig – upgrade over who Jamarcus. Fine I will accept that but he is not the best QB on our roster. In the preseason, Grad did in 2 Qtrs what JC took the first game, 2nd game and 3rd game. Grad played the same group of players other than Veld and we never looked this bad with Grad back there. Dallas is a better team than Tenn and we didnt look this bad in Texas last year.
You Gradkowski pumpers just can’t accept that he is a backup QB. He’s built like a backup. He is not a 16 game per season QB. The guy even looks like a Doug Flutie for christ sake.
***AIG says you Grad doubters just can’t seem to accept the fact that he delivers with the same line up and consistently comes up with excuses. All Grad has done is deliver when given the opportunity and yet you doubt doubt doubt again. Doug Flutie would have been perfect for us too.

Bruatl. Just brutal…
“Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher, in a conference call with Bay Area media, even called the Raiders offense “the Baltimore system.”
“They’re very well coached right now and they have clearly bought into it,” Fisher said. “They are executing well. The Baltimore system is a very difficult system. It combines strength and power in the physical running game with a precise play-action game, and that’s how they make their plays.”

September 12th, 2010 at 2:41 pm
Campbell looks indecisive out there. He either checks it down, or holds the ball too long and gets sacked. I dont like the tempo of the offense at all right now.
I know it was just preseason, but the offense looked sharper with Gradkowski at the controls than Campbell. Bruce gets back quickly, makes his reads and gets rid of the football. Unless you have all-pros at all 5 line positions, youre going to have pressure on the QB. We need our QB, whether its Campbell or Gradkowski or Kyle Boller, to be decisive and get rid of the ball quickly.
Last year we saw a huge difference when Gradkowski took over for Russell, we actually resembled and NFL offense.
I get thats its more than the QB and Im not putting the blame squarely on Campbell, theres plenty to go around. That said, I do think Bruce gives us the best chance to win and if this keeps up, I hope Cable doesnt wait until week 10 to give him a shot.

September 12th, 2010 at 2:45 pm
Raiders played with no heart or fire today.
They, like us, were filled with wishful thinking and FEAR!
The fear was justified as they showed they are in no way ready to compete for the division or the playoffs.
They are slow physically and mentally.
A 17-13 or 13-10 win next week will not matter.
Hopefully, this will be Al’s last year running the team and then a true rebuilding can begin.
September 12th, 2010 at 2:46 pm
All the off-season optimism ignored the fact that we have no talent on offense.
We have the worst offensive line in the NFL — featuring two tackles who don’t belong in the league. Henderson should refuse his paycheck after the way he played and Walker (a reject from the Art Shell debacle) is so slow he can barely get out of his stance.
We have the worst receiving corps in the NFL. Who’s going to lead the WRs in catches? Figurs with 34?
Our new QB looked utterly clueless, holding the ball too long, missing open receivers and looking like he’d given up by the second quarter. He looks like a linebacker in the pocket.
The only question is when Davis/Cable goes to Gradkowski, our only hope for a spark. He moves around in the pocket, gets rid of the ball fast, isn’t afraid to throw to receivers down the field and inspires his teammates.
What a sad, sad state of affairs. Eight years of pathetic, legacy-destroying football for Davis and no end in sight.
September 12th, 2010 at 2:46 pm
Why we lost:
1. Terrible O line (again)
2. Out of posistion on defense (again)
3. Costly penaltys (again)
4. Poor Special Teams play (again)
The All Stars of the Raiders showed up. DMAC, Seymore, Henderson, Harris, Wimbley, Groves, Miller, Ashomunga, Huff, Lechler. Yes I included a punter. He belongs in the all star group. Everybody else looks subpar, like a rookie, or just plain stunk.
I sure hope we can bring some of these other guy’s game up and win some ball games this year.
September 12th, 2010 at 2:47 pm
Cable made a huge mistake for not playing V and the starters in our fourth preseason game. How can you not play the rookie with the starters to make sure they are on the same page. The line was terrible with timing today. Walker looked like a disaster on every play.
September 12th, 2010 at 2:47 pm
i hope that the Raiders get it together becuase the Rams are blitzing like crazy. Bradford is holding his own. And Jackson put on some more muscle.
September 12th, 2010 at 2:48 pm
Lefty,
You were right about the Hue Jackson hype.
Looked pretty much like the same offense we saw last year. A lot of vertical routes with not much underneath action.
Pretty silly that no adjustments were made with the breakdowns on the line. I expected to see some quick slants, crossing routes, and more screens.
The screens getting knocked down at the LOS were really disappointing!
September 12th, 2010 at 2:50 pm
I don’t recall a single slant route being thrown at.
September 12th, 2010 at 2:51 pm
Every offense we run would “look” the same if the QB is constantly running for his life. No matter how truly different it may be. A QB on the ground or running around like chicken little with his head cut off will always look the same year in and year out.
The offense IS different. The results given the players ARE the same.
September 12th, 2010 at 2:52 pm
J HIll, Tha’t’s because Hue isn’t really running that offense…the Crypt Keeper in the booth is, as well as the archaic defensive scheme. as much as I HATE Warren Sapp, I’m starting to give his babbling azz a little credit for knowing what is REALLY going on in Oaktown.
September 12th, 2010 at 2:53 pm
Cant judge the WRs or TEs this game. No time to throw is no time to throw. No QB in rhythm is the same. It is what it is.
Bad OLINE play comes right back to the HC who prides himself on the OLINE and interjected routinely on the OLINE this offseason. NO results insofar.
September 12th, 2010 at 2:53 pm
Maaan it’s only one game, the first game at that. There’s still 15 more to go. We got our a**es handed to us by the giants last year and came back the next week and beat a good eagles team. Veldheers in-experience hurt us, and the team had the jitters and it showed up big time. Game one is over its on to the next. If we come back and smash the rams next week all this will be forgotten, and confidence will be restored. We weren’t expected to win this one anyway. I believe we’ll be aite. But I will say, for the first time, tom cables face displayed a look of worry. I mean he’s had serious charges hanging over his head and he’s looked composed, but after this game… worry showed up on his face.

The oline has no heart…Henderson standing around looking stupid, I’m sick of it.
September 12th, 2010 at 2:59 pm
Let me break it down for you folks on when things began to go south:
Tenn starting the game blitzing like crazy! Against this you must throw short slants or screens and burn them big! Hue called the screens (maybe even the slants) but Campbell could not connect. He was either throwing the ball to low or the linemen where not keeping the defenders hands down. The balls were getting knocked in the air. None of the screens worked. So the defense kept blitzing. And we kept shttin our pants as a result.
The Oline was letting turltes through the gate and Campbell looked as nervous as he did the 1st preseason game. He really looked jittery and could not get in any rhythm.
September 12th, 2010 at 2:59 pm
Apologists beware, here comes the truth…..
McClain has to learn that as the MLB of this team, he can’t be absorbing blocks while in space.
He’s gotta get under that block on the TD run by Ringer.
Jason Campbell is completely passionless and way too conservative. That slide one yard short of the marker ripped my heart out.
We need some passion and we need it now, we need Gradkowski.

Raiders don’t have strength or power on the O-Line.
As a group, they are not consistent man blockers to execute consistently yet on offense.
Hue needs to call more plays that will move the pocket and by JC or Grads more time to throw, cause the O-line is not good enough!
September 12th, 2010 at 3:00 pm
I don’t buy the no time to throw angle …
QBs are going to get hit in the NFL.
What I don’t see from Campbell is ANY sort of anticipation. Looking over the field, knowing the coverage, and anticipating where the open man is going to be.
There’s not even an attempt!!!!!!
It seems like he knows before the ball is snapped that the ball is going to the RB.
How does Zah Miller not catch a pass until halfway through the 3rd qtr? Even Russell was smart enough to get the ball to Miller!

Did Campbell get booed much in Washington?
He better have thick skin because Raider fan will be screaming for Bruce and booing JC, probaly before the game starts.
September 12th, 2010 at 3:09 pm
We needed to score a lot in this game, and have ball control. Both those issues depend heavily on Oline play. There was none of that today. In almost every play you can see the pocket collapsing and it became obvious that by the 3rd offensive drive, the Tenn D had gotten inside Campbell’s head. He looked very hesitant and insecure in the pocket. But can you really blame him? If you had 3-4 250-300 pounders coming for your head and no one to stop them we all would feel that way. DMac did do some good in this game, but it was all on garbage time after we were down by like 25 or so. Our D looked decent the first quarter, but again, because our Offense couldn’t get anything going they got tired and frustrated.
So the answer, FIX THE DARN OLINE!!! Go get whatever proven veteran players are left and give them a try, they won’t be any worse than what we got now.
And here I thought we were going to be at least competitive in this game. I guesses 24-23 Raiders, pfffff… how wrong I was.
But I do think if by some miracle we fix the Oline, we can win with this team. The QB needs time to throw, the RB needs lanes to run, and there needs to be some blocking for crying out loud.
DMac did throw a nice block in one of the plays though…

I could be wrong, but doubt it.

Again, a personal hat trick in the worst way.
I can not believe the calls for this guy to play FS AT ALL. Eugene and even Stevie Brown are better than Branch at FS.

Cambell was not the problem today. If Drew Brees had been the Raiders QB, the results would have been the same. This had to be one of the worst offensive line performances I have ever seen. And that is saying a lot considering how many Raider games I have watched.

September 12th, 2010 at 3:12 pm
raider75 great comment. Im a cornhusker fan as well as a Raider fan, more of a raiders fan. One thing i love about Bo Pelini as a coach more than anything no matter how well they play especially their defense, is the fact that after every game he drops the F bomb at least once. Hes never been at least 50% positive about his defenses performance. In fact in the last three years hes had at least half a dozen personal foul penalties called on him because he was cussing out refs. You need a coach who excepts nothing less than perfection no matter what level. You play bad you get reamed no matter what regardless of if you win or lose. Playing bad is inexcusable for any player no matter what.

I hope Jon Gruden jumped off that bus, because one game into the season and that bus is on fire and about 3/4 of the way down the cliff. Tom Cable has to go now. The move in the other direction has to come now.

I am for Gradkowski. Mark it down.

September 12th, 2010 at 3:15 pm

Told you…if the Raiders don[’t get 7-8 wins and if Cable starts off 0-4, 1-4, 1-5 or 2-5….he will be replaced by Hue Jackson.
Then after the season is done….they better HIRE JIM HARBUAGH OR JON GRUDEN as the next Head Coach!

The Raiders will never be good again as long as Al Davis is alive. How about the Raiders just fold away their franchise, relocate and change their name a la the Baltimore Ravens. Let Al piss away that team. He built a great legacy, but he now is destroying that legacy. Then some other team can be the laughing stock of the league. Don’t give me this ‘it’s one game’ crap. It’s always been just ‘one game’ for the past 7 seasons. I’ve had it with this team. They are no good and will never be good as long as Uncle Al is running them.

honestly every negative thing i heard about campbell from his washington days were very noticeable today. First off he held onto the ball to long. Not every sack was his fault but 2 or 3 were simple coverage sack, simply being unacceptable. 2 hes extremely good at the checkdown.

I agree, Nate. Al’s in ‘we’ll win my way or no way’ mode, and has been for over a decade. I think it’s why he got rid of Gruden, and why he never gave Kiffin a chance. He’d rather lose his way than win someone else’s.

only good thing out of that game was the way McFadden played. A lot of his yardage was in mop up duty but he played well when the game was close. Id say this was his second best game of his career. He ran the ball well caught it exceptionally well. The one thing i noticed was he was finishing runs as well as making people miss which i never saw him do before not even 2 years ago against kansas city.

Tom Cable has to face the fact that he knows nothing about evaluating offensive linemen. He has been stripped of all his other duties, he needs to butt out of any influence on the O-line.
Tom, you’re never going to be a Head Coach in the NFL again. You may as well go out in style. Keep wearing the head set and say “Yes sir” to Al. But show some balls. Let your assistants make the decisions.
September 12th, 2010 at 3:25 pm
J HIll, Tha’t’s because Hue isn’t really running that offense…the Crypt Keeper in the booth is, as well as the archaic defensive scheme. as much as I HATE Warren Sapp, I’m starting to give his babbling azz a little credit for knowing what is REALLY going on in Oaktown.

Well, time to try and salvage the rest of this Sunday. One last thought:
1989 Cowboys. Troy Aikman already had one of the most prolific receivers in history to throw to in Michael Irvin and a pretty good RB in Herschel Walker. But he was playing behind a horrific offensive line. The end result: a QB that looked horrible and took a beating and led the team to only one win that year.
Keep on believing in that Gradkowski dream. He may pull off a few wins here and there when a Pittsburgh or Cincinnati has an inexplicably terrible game. But that’s all you get out of him – provided he can even stay healthy, which he hasn’t been able to do so far. (Two knee tears and a torn pec in less than 6 months? Jesus.)
Fixing the offensive line is where you start with this team. Until then, everything else is a waste of time.
Good night.

‘Sup fellas.
I’m a glass half full kinda guy, but Damn..that was ugly. I’ve always supported Mario Henderson, talked about how he held his own vs. M. Williams and Seymour in ‘08. After today, I think he may be mildly retarded. At least ate all the lead paint chips off his swing set as a child.
He is late off the snap, gives up the sack, about getting his qb killed and fumbling. While players are fighting for the loose ball at his feet; he is standing with his hands on hips staring at the Raider sideline. WTF?
Later on, in the 2nd half. They throw a swing pass to DMac I think. The DE bats it down because Marios “attempt” at a block is to fall down, curl up in a fetal position and hope his man trips over him, I guess. Pathetic.
September 12th, 2010 at 3:33 pm
With Figurs injured and fumbling season opening kickoff, Nick Miller should be activated.
September 12th, 2010 at 3:33 pm
McFadden had an excellent game: Didn’t Fumble and actually broke some tackles and averaged 5+ypc. There are good tthings to take from this game: D-mac’s performance and the linebackers. The 2 long TD runs were on the DB’s, mostly. Also let’s not forget that’s the best O-line in the league. Not many sacks and a whole lot of yards.

Not true. I remember hearing the knowledge Faulk opine today and he says exactly as I’ve said above. You simply cannot give a legit NFL offense a ton of opportunities as we’ve done today. If our offense moved the rock the game would’ve been completely different. period.

Detroit didn’t get hosed and neither did Murphy last year. It’s not a touchdown until the catch is complete. It’s not like a running touchdown when you cross the plane. The ball has to be in clear possession. The receiver can not just let the ball go right after catching it. Poor discipline on the part of both Murphy and Johnson.

jhill-389-exactly,and not with little dump offs for 2 yds on 3 and 7.its too early to give up on him,but campbell really sucked today.it wasn’t the olines fault when early in the game he missed a wide open murphy for what might have been a td.also, the qb has to move around or any line will get toasted.as i said earlier the line doesn’t look nearly so bad when grads plays qb.

September 12th, 2010 at 3:46 pm
Marios, good defenses play well when they’re left on the field due to bad offenses. That’s what good defenses do. They keep the score low and keep a mediocre offense within reach. Our defense did not do that. They didn’t even get close. They got picked apart right from the get go when it counted.

Veldheer at center. Good gawd. You knew there was going to be some growing pains…but Jeezuz H Christ. On the play the Raiders got the delay. Campbell couldn’t believe he didn’t get the offsides against Tenn with a hard count. THe DE is five yds offsides and scrambling to get back. Snap the friggin ball. Inexperience. Two bad shotgun snaps. Holding penalty. Snapped one early that JC couldn’t do anything with, but take a knee. Awful.

Glutten, I won’t argue with you on the stupidity of the rule. It is stupid. But it’s in effect and may have well took wins away from Oakland last year and Detroit this year, two teams that can use all the wins they can get. This rule should be a simple memo to every receiver in the league: Hang on to the ball with dear life when making a catch. If you let that ball go loose, even after catching it, it’s going to be ruled incomplete. How hard is it to just hold on to the ball? It’s either a lack of discipline on their part, or, they really didn’t have possession of it.
September 12th, 2010 at 3:51 pm
Wow, today, is Campbell hurt? He has to be concussed.
McFadden had a decent day.
Titans O and D line put on a clinic today.
Wow was our Oline bad….
Oh well Rome wasn’t built in a day, the Titans are a good team, and it just shows what good line play can do for a team. Other teams will not expose our weaknesses this badly.
Other fun notes:
Wow is Foutts a tool. Hey Dan, you were a tool back then, you are a tool right now.

“Campbell should practice throughing off of his back foot…”
Kinda a funny, but still what a tool.

AB Paine, everyone knows about this rule. A receiver either hangs on to a TD possession for dear life, or they stupidly let the ball roll loose. It’s a dumb rule, but it’s there. If that ball rolls loose, even after you catch it, it’s not a catch according to the rules. It’s not like a running t.d. where it’s official once you cross the plane. Just because you caught the football doesn’t make it a touchdown. You have to demonstrate clear possession. What better way to do this than to let the ball NEVER leave your hands? Hold that thing like you’re rescuing a baby from a fire. Why can’t these receivers get that? ARe they unaware of the rule?
September 12th, 2010 at 3:54 pm
That is a horrible rule. The competition committee needs to look into that. Awful rule. That should have been a TD, today. As should of Murphy’s.
He went up caught the ball cleanly. No Bobble. Landed on his butt. Rolled over still firmly holding the ball. Put his hand on the ground. Was in the process of getting up when the ball touched the ground and then trickled away. TD. That is a silly rule.
September 12th, 2010 at 3:54 pm
wheres all the haters today. we should be a nation undivided unlike the one we live in. ill be at the home opener and will knock anybody bashing Al or Cable. one game does not make the season.
September 12th, 2010 at 3:54 pm
He had possession. The ball slipped out when he was pushing him self up to celebrate. How about common sense?

All you guys saying the defense was on the field too much & the offense hardly had any plays are wrong.
The TOP was almost even and we actually ran more plays than the Titans.
September 12th, 2010 at 3:55 pm
Buck eye, why did Johnson and Murphy let the ball roll loose, in both of their instances?
There’s only two possible answers:
1) They just were not cognitive of this rule, meaning they’re undisciplined. There is no excuse for a player not knowing a rule.
2) They never truly had possession.
Come up with another reason.
September 12th, 2010 at 3:55 pm
Whats too funny is, I’ve screamed O-line in here for three years, this blog wants position players only, the implosion has now happened, too late to fix it, when does the NBA season start?
September 12th, 2010 at 3:55 pm
AB Paine, then don’t push the ball up to celebrate! How hard is it? If I’m an NFL receiver, I’m not letting go of that ball till I get on the bus.
September 12th, 2010 at 3:56 pm
one game does not make a season but i’m not going to tell tales here …they looked pretty bad on offense.
the best news (other than the defense) is DMC ran really hard and break many tackles today. he was the lone highlight on offense.
September 12th, 2010 at 3:56 pm
Get the ball to D-mac 40 times per game!
September 12th, 2010 at 3:57 pm
The Raiders are a better team than they showed today, here’s hoping they reset for the home opener.
Is Gallery hurt seriously????
September 12th, 2010 at 3:57 pm
Cable is looking like a stooge at this point. He better have his offensive line working 24/7 until the Rams game. That was an incredible display of incompetence, namely Veldheer and Mario Williams.
September 12th, 2010 at 3:57 pm

About 70% of the commenters in here predicted a Raider win. Now a lot of people are saying we were never supposed to win because Tennessee is so good. Are these the same people?
September 12th, 2010 at 3:59 pm
Terra, D-mac 3 years in the making, had one good game, won’t make three, goes out injured, thank you again O-line….
September 12th, 2010 at 3:59 pm
Smiply put this team is out of shape.
Jerry Mc said we’ll see what kind of shape they will be in when they get to hot and humid Tenn.
The O-line was a step or two slow ALL DAY.
defense held up for most of the game and had simple brain farts on some of the plays.

I’m getting a #5 Gradkowski Jersey, away white Jersey. Campbell is shell shocked.
Campbell missed seeing the blitz one too many times today, and omg did Carlyle get thrown around like a rag doll,
And Mario…. seriously mario, nice tackle on the Campbell fumble, how to throw the shin in there.
September 12th, 2010 at 4:02 pm
MR, we were totally out classed and out coached, give Tenn their due, they came to play, and executed, well done on their side….with what they had, just like us…
September 12th, 2010 at 4:02 pm
Marios, there is no way of knowing if you’re one of the people who predicted a Raider win, and are now posting under a new name. So why bother making that claim? It’s neither here nor there. Most of this blog had it about Raiders 24, Tennessee 20, give or take. Now most of this blog is saying we shouldn’t feel bad because we never should have won this game in the first place. Something’s gotta give.
September 12th, 2010 at 4:03 pm
the bigger mistake was not playing Veldheer in the last preseason game …absolutely terrible decision by Cable!
New CENTER …give him the reps!!!!
At least play him as much as possible to make sure he’s the real deal …not 1 freakin game for 2/3qs!!!
Absolutely asinine decision. I was shocked when I read Veldheer sat out.
September 12th, 2010 at 4:03 pm

September 12th, 2010 at 4:04 pm
The desire to win cannot be underestimated. The Raiders, for whatever reason, showed no desire. Al Davis and Tom Cable have a lot to think about this coming week.
September 12th, 2010 at 4:04 pm
I didn’t expect us to go into Tennessee and beat them in week 1, so I’m not heartbroken at this. But now we can get down to business and win the next game.

September 12th, 2010 at 4:09 pm
This is pretty much why I don’t put much effort into this team anymore. They don’t put much effort into themselves. People have been telling me that they think the Raiders will be good this year and I’ve been telling them…I’ll believe it when I see it. I followed the game on Gamecast and on here while I did my homework because at least I have a future, I’m not so sure about the Raiders. I will always be a fan and I will always follow them but I’m really not surprised.
In fact, I was worried when we went 3-1 in the pre-season because usually the teams that succeed there fail in the regular season. Its just 1 game and I think we’ll certainly be better this year but I’m not holding my breath. I’d be happy to see it but the Raiders have seriously hurt my passion as a football fan and hopefully they can rekindle it. Its just another disappointing day but I think the Raiders are a better team who can actually fix the current problems over other coaching staffs. Who knows?
September 12th, 2010 at 4:09 pm
Brien, I meant Al being involved with personnel decisions, game planning, etc. Not actual game play. Thank you for clarifying for me that Al Davis doesn’t actually play on the field. Now that we have that out of the way, do you have a response to my point about Al damaging the team by being involved with game planning and personnel decisions?
September 12th, 2010 at 4:10 pm
Out schemed and over powered……..that sums up week 1 people…..i would say at least we got rams but they look more like a team than we do…….when raiders dont start off season with win its hard for us to get in playoffs lol…….we better do something drastic
September 12th, 2010 at 4:10 pm
Bauce, there was no one left, let be real, we are a hurting unit in the first game, ouch for the rest of the season, our O-line sacrifices QB’s and RB’s, what is left?
September 12th, 2010 at 4:10 pm
The only silver lining in that fiasco today was McFadden. He looked good. He did all the things his critics in here say he can’t do. He ran hard. Often up the middle. Broke tackles and often finished his runs well. Gaining extra yardage. What did he finish with? Something like 95 yds rushing and 55 rec. w/ 1 TD. Something like that.
hopefully. Bush comes back soon. I think he and DMac can make a nice one-two punch.
September 12th, 2010 at 4:10 pm
We can sit here and talk about this and that and whatever, but the fact is we will not do ANYTHING until Cable is gone. He is NOT a coach that can even keep us competitive. Even with the roster of the ‘85 Bears we will continue to get thumped week after week. I don’t believe this team will win a game this year with Cable as HC.
You can have all the great players in the world, but if they are in the wrong spots, don’t have any desire or heart, or you can’t scheme correctly, you will lose everytime.
That’s how horrible Cable is.

Veldheer played pretty bad today. but i’m not giving up on him. he had a lot of snapping issues but no issues blocking his man (as i recall).
i see him improving on the snaps and chemistry with campbell with more reps. thats why i’m not overly concerned with it because once he get more proficient with that he’ll be much better than what we’ve had before in the middle.

The answer is totally revamping that O-line. Maybe it took a complete and thorough azz whooping for Al davis and Cable to see what is painfully clear…We cannot win with that o-line.
We should have gone after Hartwig and used him at Center this season. Then Veldheer could have played the LT spot like he’s supposed to. Bruce Campbell needs to start instead of Carlisle. He can’t be worse than what we saw today from Carlisle.
Maybe we should go and try to unretire Mawae. And replace Henderson, Walker, and Carlisle immediately.
Until those things happen, I don’t expect to see any different results.

O-line is supposed to be Cable’s specialty. So the performance of the O-line falls squarely on his shoulders. He sucks. And his stay the course, and we’ll get it fixed lines have gotten old already.
September 12th, 2010 at 4:20 pm
Once O-line gets it together, we will win.
Unfortunately, they just need time.
Problem is, we don’t have much patience anymore…
neither do the players. You can see it in their eyes since the first quarter.
They learned that hype doesn’t win games, executing does.
And I hope Cable learned when to go for the TD or first down on 4th downs.

I’m going to try and not overreact. But that was depressing. Those 1:00 pm et starts have been tough on the Raiders. They sure as hell looked like they were sleep walking out there. At least the O-line. If Mario Henderson still has to do push ups for bad plays, his arms might frickin fall off after this one.
They might seriously have to look into starting Khalif Barnes. He has started on some good Jax teams. Not so Super Mario needs to step up. And Big Langston Walker didn’t look much better at RT.
At least with Veldheer there is hope that he’s going to improve with experience. You had to know there was going to be some growing pains, but damn.

Take a look at this video. Scroll to the 2 minute mark. Last play of the game, they have to score a TD and JC dumps off rather than taking a shot at the endzone. The guy is a big stat whooore.

I didnt think we will win. I said it very early on. but i didn’t think we would get flat out embarrassed either.
now i’ll have to reconsider the rest of the season. i thought this was a .500 maybe 9-7 squad if lucky ….maybe i was beign too optimistic.
September 12th, 2010 at 4:43 pm
Cable not playing Veldheer the final preseason game. Guys, you really have to think about how stupid that decision was. And this is your HC?
September 12th, 2010 at 4:43 pm
I was cautiously optimistic going into this game, but never thougth we would get torched like that…thought we could at least be competitive. If the Lambs beat us next week, Tom can start packing….even though it’s not his fault.
September 12th, 2010 at 4:44 pm
News flash…same old same old…not protecting your QB? Cant stop the run…and why in the Hell is Stanford Trash(ROUTT)from the Houston area still on this team!!! He couldn’t cover in High School and didn’t do anything here at U of Houston…Trash is what they call him here…hint, hint…or as we say toast…always getting burnt…To save the season keep Campbell in the Shotgun and spread offense… and get out of that man for man crap and man up when needed…or here we go… again….
September 12th, 2010 at 4:45 pm
This looks like the worst beating any team took this weekend. The Raiders are not even in the middle of the pack.
September 12th, 2010 at 4:45 pm
MT,
if you expected 8-8, then there are 8 losses to deal with. There will be ugly losses and close losses. A loss is a loss. We are better than last year I can assure you all around. However, we could be a whole lot better if we played Grad instead.
The score was not indicative of how the D played. CJ is gonna be in the HOF. He is a freak and people dont give him credit because he was not drafted high. He smoked 12 consecutive teams for 100+ yds even though everyone knew he is the only option.

Raiders 46-13

September 12th, 2010 at 4:45 pm
Improved line play……..nope
Improved run D…………nope
Routt as a starter……..burn time
Veldheer………………thinks he’s long snapping to Lechler when in the shotgun
Campbell………………Fumblematic part duex
Add it up and you get 0-16 and the number one pick in next year’s draft where it won’t matter because of the lockout

September 12th, 2010 at 4:49 pm
Hey…at least we’re letting our young WR’s develop instead of trading for Boldin, or signing T.O. or signing Houshmandzadeh. I mean…who needs a reliable target right? Hey…we have Schilens afterall…oh yeah, he never actually gets on the field.

All things considered, the D played fairly well. Actually held CJ2K in check most of the day. Just had the one breakdown, when Branch missed him in the backfield and he was gone. But, the guy is that good.
Seymour and McClain played pretty well.
Where was the Marshall plan? Needs to bring some blitz packages. Especially against the rookie next week. VY had all day to throw. Way too often.
Don’t think they will have to face the option any more. I hope.
Tennesee on the road was a tough draw for an opener. Titans whipped their azz basically. If the Raiders offense looks this pathetic at home vs. STL, then it will be time to hit the panic button.

Fair enough, Bob. You have a point. When the other team has 38 on the board, it’s tough to say the D played fairly well.
However, I do think they did a decent job on CJ2K. He did bust the long one. But, he’s going to do that on damn near anybody. Other than that he had 26 carries for 70 yds.
They got burned on the razzle dazzle fake reverse for the big pass.
VY broke some long runs on em. Like I said. Don’t think they’ll face another option QB.
Overall, I think the D did some good things. But you’re right. Giving 38 isn’t getting it done.

September 12th, 2010 at 5:08 pm
Wow that was cr@ptacular.
So several questions were at least partially answered.
The OLine isn’t very good as a whole. Valdeheer was AWFUL. I mean worse than awful. Mario had one of his worst games I’ve seen from him (that’s saying something). Carlisle was used. Walker was not good. Gallery was not good.
The Oline scheming was NOT GOOD either. Lots of bad schemes on the blocking. Who gets the blame for that? I guess Cable is ultimately respons. To be fair that guy who sacked Campbell for the fumble was offsides by a yard. Still wouldn’t have mattered.
ST, YeaMon! was not good. Fumbling the opening KO??!?!?! Coverage teams were better than indicated in PS.
Is it too early to be calling for Grads?!? I was calling for Satele and Grads by the second Q.
There were two bright spots if you could even be so gracious:
McFadden was good, pretty darn good and didn’t lay it on the grass even once. I still don’t think we use him to the fullest but he stepped up. Even pass blocked well. Can’t remember the other positive. Maybe Dick Seymour, he had a decent game.
Cable gone by bye week?!?

The end result is that we all love the same team that plays like b$#^hes and get embarrassed every time they take the field. The witty banter and optimism can stay in the blogs, and it most likely always will, but our season is destined to be another 5 winner. Am I the only one who clearly sees the disaster that is our team? As always, will stick with them and bleed S&B as I have the past 27 years, but not happy, and certainly not optimistic.
