Figurs cut, JLH, Ford to return kicks
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, September 15th, 2010 at 3:24 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Raiders coach Tom Cable said return specialist Yamon Figurs was released to make room for Erik Pears, and that Johnnie Lee Higgins and Jacoby Ford would assume kickoff and punt return duties.
Cable said he wasn’t sure which would return punts and which would return kickoffs.
The most significant injury appears to be to left guard Robert Gallery, with Cable saying more would be known in 48 to 72 hours. Sounds as if they hope to have him practicing Friday so he could play Sunday.
Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha sat out with a groin injury that may be more maintenence than something severe.
Running back Michael Bush was in “full participation” mode, which means there’s a chance he could play against the Rams _ 20 days after surgery on his left thumb.
More to come . . .

Weird.
September 15th, 2010 at 3:27 pm
im really glad they got rid of figurs, they should have told him not to eat the popcorn before the game
September 15th, 2010 at 3:27 pm
Wow, fumbling the opening kickoff will do that to ya… Jacoby Time!!!!
September 15th, 2010 at 3:27 pm
I HOPE THEY DON’T FUMBLE

Jerry could you limit your updates to more important stories? It’s hard for me to keep my baiting and arguing going on 2 threads at once. Have some manners. Thank you in advance.

Is “Oakland Raiders” on facebook an official Oakland Raiders page?
This is their recent update:
“Whats Gradkowski’s record as a starter ?
Throwing Jason Campbell under the bus after one start is overreaction.”
Wow. Did Al type that himself? Nice way to bash a backup quarterback on YOUR TEAM, presently ON THE ROSTER!!
Anyhow, I left a comment there in the past half hour. See if you guys can guess the identity of the one and only MR.

I don’t think you got the official page. Here it is:

no Drank, it is not possible Karen McCrappen does it two weeks in a row, she is soft.

Cable said he wasn’t sure which would return punts and which would return kickoffs.

Needs to check with Davis.

Post 22 is funny.
September 15th, 2010 at 3:33 pm
Excuse me for being a football dummy but why cant one guy return kick offs and punts.
Why does everyone need one for each
September 15th, 2010 at 3:34 pm
He should be good for an encore Purple……Especially at home. Bush sounds like he’s miraculously ready to go though. Truthfully he should sit out one more week. We should be able to beat the Rams at home without him, and I’d hate for another helmet to hit that hand earlier than it’s supposed to be taking contact.
If Ford is out there at the same time with DHB, we’ll have some serious speed on the field. Looking forward to Sunday more now actually….
September 15th, 2010 at 3:34 pm
Neither are very good so flip a coin and be done with it.
“Cable said he wasn’t sure which would return punts and which would return kickoffs”
September 15th, 2010 at 3:35 pm
Probably the same reason one guy can’t snap to the QB and the punter = ridiculous.

September 15th, 2010 at 3:36 pm
They keep N Miller on the roster for the entire 2009 season and now that he’s healthy and ready to play in 2010 they put him back on the the shelf to rot…..LMFAO @ this circus act!

Maroney will bite us in the a$$ twice a year. Good move for Den.
September 15th, 2010 at 3:40 pm
Gallery must have pulled the hamstring running to prevent the TD on the fumble or int whatever it was.
Missed lots of games last year, hopefully not the same story this year.
What a waste of time with Figurs. All the chances the young guys could have gotten are wasted.
With the exception of Carlisle, is anyone on the O-line playing his native position?
September 15th, 2010 at 3:40 pm
Glad they cut Figurs. Some accountablity at last.
Cable wasn’t sure who would return punts and who would return kickoffs.

September 15th, 2010 at 3:46 pm
Cable is an absolute IDIOT of a HC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This guy cannot make a good decision!
(And I’m YELLING here):
Out of the blue you give this guy the start a KR/PR after the all the fumbles in the preseason. THEN you turn around and cut that same player after one week!!!!!!!!??????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHAT THE FK!!!!!
September 15th, 2010 at 3:48 pm
They’ve given Higgins a shot…..no one wants to see him back there anymore. Give the new kid a shot. Ford will at least return one kickoff to the 35, if not further. I’m so sick of us having to start from the 18 all the damn time. Use the young talent before they lose their swagg
September 15th, 2010 at 3:48 pm
Al is working Bush hoping the injury will get worse and McChiken gets 100% of the touches again…
September 15th, 2010 at 3:48 pm
Terrapin I have a hunch that Harbaugh was vouching for Figurs based on their past at Baltimore, and Cable probably told him “I will give him ONE shot” he fumbled, see ya. If you look at it that way Cable is putting his foot down, he is relying on his coaches, but making decisions when needed. Put down the hater aid mang.
September 15th, 2010 at 3:49 pm

September 15th, 2010 at 3:51 pm
Not a fan of Figurs …and I know everyone was surprised to hear he would be starting at BOTH KR & PR over the other avail talents and very shocked considering his preseason performance.
Then Cable turns around and cuts ‘em the next week? Man this is a terrible HC!
September 15th, 2010 at 3:53 pm
Even Figurs was surprised when he found out he was going to be the KO/punt return guy. He shouldn’t be surprised that he was cut after his first performance.
September 15th, 2010 at 3:54 pm
Now Does this mean after on game, Al has to pay Yamon’s full salary for the entire 2010 if someone doesn’t pick him up? Trust me nobody would. Even UFL wouldn’t touch him.
Al deserves losing money on these kind of fast track guys who can’t play football(DHB next???). He could have vetoed putting him on final 53 based on a horrific pre-season but he didn’t. So now pay up old man ….

September 15th, 2010 at 3:57 pm
I don’t care the ST Coach isn’t doin his damn job either! Between him and Cable, whoever made that decision and/or supported it, one of them if not both should be looking at the GUILOTINE.
September 15th, 2010 at 3:57 pm
Gotta love the Tom Cable story.
1st year as HC he took over Lance and rallied the troops to a 5-11 finish!
2nd year he did everything, from calling plays to coaching the o-linea nd ralilied the troops to a 5-11 finish!
3rd year he’s busy 24 hours a day, he does the overnight security & the janitorial jobs @ alameda, takes on the press speaking for hours about topics he knows nothing about, and my guess is he’ll rally the troops to a 5-11 finish!
just win baby!
September 15th, 2010 at 3:57 pm

Exactly! But his cult members do that year after year after year…………………..
September 15th, 2010 at 3:58 pm
Did anyone listen to Brad Gilbert(Raiders fan) on Jim Rome radio today? He flat out called out Cable saying “he’s not sold on him.” I agree with him how could Cable claim the loss being the result of team being “FLAT” for season opener? It’s on a coach to make sure team not flat.
I predict Cable firing before or after this season. Al has a man crush on Stanford coach, Jimmy Harbaugh. He wants him bad. So the job will be his. Take this to bank now.

If you believe in that train of thought you would also have to buy into the assumption based on history that if Al supports the guy, i.e. Al Davis scholorship guy, then Figurs would have gotten a whole lot of opportunities to fail! Since he did NOT and Al APPROVED his departure without haste you can only conclude that this was NOT an Al Davis decision@!
This is all on Cable and that ST Coach – both have been disasters since they came here.
I pray Hue can rise above this mess.

How can anyone really blame the playcalling when its a jail break all over the Oline? How can any play be ran? Please tell me!
And when Campbell did have the opportunity to put the defense back in check he failed. Screen passes were called – all batted down! And he didn’t attack when he actually had the opportunity to do so.
That has nothing to do with the playcalling.

All through preseason I thought Gradkowski and Boller both looked better than Campbell, but they were playing against scrub defenses too. I know it’s too early to call Campbell the next Aaron Rodgers, but I won’t be surprised if he turns out to be a bust too. I hope they can get this straightened out and play some decent ball soon. It sucks to have so much optomism every season and then watch them get clobbered.

Sorry guys ..I just don’t think Veldheer can play LT. Julius Peppers showed me all I needed to see. He beat Veldheer twice or more in very limited play during the preseason.
He may be a very good RT and he may end up being one of the dominant Centers in the game.
I say starting working out Campbell for LT. Not to start but practicing at LT. He has all the measurables (Veldheer has short arms) and he’s quick. He could be a good LT or RT.

Hope you’re right. It’ll be a year too late IMO.

It was obvious to a blind man that this should have been the case in the preseason………..but NOOOO ur genius of a coach puts Yo-man it Figurs back there. Now can YOU Puleeeeze make the obvious changes in the Oline, instead of waiting until the Wams beat us.

I would be all for playing Bruce Campbell at LT, I’m sure Jason Campbell concurs.

I believe Figurs is gone because he was a fool to say that the fumble wasn’t his fault. “The guy put his helmet on the ball.” Yea clown, and you’re supposed to keep the ball away from the opponent’s helmet!

He could be a good LT or RT

You’re kidding right????? You have a rookie who played Division II football last year going up against Peppers in a preseason game and you’re ready to write him off for LT? The same rookie gets moved to starter at center for opening game and while he sucked some, it wasn’t Satele sucking out there. Dude, are you serious?

They need a Brett Favre i.v. for heart and durability
a Tatum (rest his soul) i.v. for hard hitting
a Gannon i.v. for work ethic and general film study QBwise
a Ray Lewis i.v. for intensity and leadership on defense.
and a Bill Parcells i.v. for football knowledge and organization
injuries following a blow out loss, with questionable depth.

Just a mishap. That’s it. Nothing serious,” cornerback Stanford Routt said. “Nothing to go and think the world’s about to come to an end. It’s just football. It happens.”
– Defensive end Trevor Scott called it “a minor setback. It went down how it went down. We can only get better form here on out.”
– Wide receiver/return specialist Yamon Figurs said his game-opening fumble (recovered by teammate Ricky Brown) was unavoidable. “The guy who hit it, he put his helmet right on the ball,” Figurs said. “It was a good hit.”
Obviously Figurs poor play and attitude towards is fumble got him cut, now 2 other players that played poor, made some qoutes that I do not understand how they can make, if this team is going to have a winning attitude. T.Scott & S.Routt–these guys should not have made those above qoutes, because I would not want team-mates like that with me “It is a I don’t care if we lose attitude”…..get some players in hear that will deem it a privilege to play in the NFL, and not these PRIMADONA-DIVAS.
