Madden, Torre, but no Gallery, Seymour
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, September 16th, 2010 at 11:31 am in Oakland Raiders.
As the Raiders concluded their media window for Thursday’s practice, visitors heading toward the field included John Madden and Joe Torre.
But as they completed warmups and drills, there was no sign of Robert Gallery or Richard Seymour, the latest in a rash of hamstring strains which has plagued the club.
Rookie cornerback Walter McFadden remains out with a hamstring injury sustained in the final preseason game. Hiram Eugene had a hamstring issue and was back on the field. Darren McFadden and Chris Johnson missed a significant portion of training camp with hamstring issues.
Johnson, out Tuesday with stinger, was back on the field. So was cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha (groin).
During special teams practice, Jacoby Ford was the deep man on some kickoffs, paired with Rock Cartwright, an indication he could be returning kickoffs with Johnnie Lee Higgins handling punts.
Torre has been friends with Davis since the two grew up in Brooklyn. Davis is at the facility but was not out at practice when the media departed.
The Dodgers are in town, playing against the Giants.
More to come later . . .

Any employee on any job is for all intents and purposes a puppet for the ownership. This is not a unique Al Davis quirk. All owners in sports pick the coach they beleive will best execute the vision of ownership, and will be the best fit to work under them. davis is no different in this regard. When a coach does not fit in these two categories he is unemployed.

They will still be my favorite team but there will be no more rebel against the world
no more team everyone hates
no more “I do it my way”

CJ got one good run, other then that he was average and its being played up like he ran all over us.
I predict about 1,600 yards for him this year if he stays healthy. Most teams will load the box and force VY to beat em.

ONE GOOD RUN? That “one good run” was for 76 yards and a TD… what about that other kids “one good run” for 15 yds and a td… by my count those 2 plays were enough to beat us…

37% of the NFL Teams go to the playoffs every year (12/32).
Yet the Raiders have only been to the playoffs 6 times in the last 21 years. And 3 of those came with Gruden 2000-02′
Al Davis and his ISMS are clearly not working.

When was the last time you heard a peep about, say, the Rooneys in Pittsburgh always looking over Mike Tomlin’s shoulder and being involved in the hands-on day-to-day running of what happens on the field? What about Stephen Ross in Miami? Ralph Wilson in Buffalo? John Mara in New York? Do you suppose Woody Johnson tries to help Rex Ryan gameplan? Do you think Bud Adams had to approve Jeff Fisher’s gameplan against the Raiders for week one?
As overbearing as Dan Snyder and Jerry Jones are, I don’t even think they involve themselves to that extent.

Top class, fellas. A bottom 5 run defense for how many years now talking trash to the game’s best RB who also happens to be a guy that plays his best when he feels disrespected. Smooth.
Then again, this was a team that was somehow overconfident despite seven straight losing seasons and going into a tough road game.

It’s funny to me how we have so many “experts” that post along side us on a daily basis. People constantly post records and stats and give their expert opinion, maybe ol Tom Cable should just spend an hour or two here and could be a better coach.
I mean McFumbles has one good game in the start of his 3rd year and already people are flocking around like he is the star RB we have been dreaming of. It’s way too early to vote him into the hall of fame.
One loss to the Titans and the sky is falling. Just about every single one of us knew with the first two picks in the draft and the lack of FA signings, that this line would be the same as last year, possibly worse. Super Mario showed he can play when he wants to, then when he visit’s McDonalds, he can play worse that a high school backup. Gallery had his back worked on and it’s a matter of time before he’s gone for the year. I won’t even comment on Walker, there is a reason he was released years before, Cooper is just collecting a paycheck and face it, we haven’t had a solid C since the 02 season.
Is the year lost? Are we doomed for another double digit loss season? It’s way too early to tell, but you would never know from this place. People play too much Madden think what happens in a video game happens in real life. Others just wish they had a chance to make changes and pray they work out, me…I’d rather let the guy collecting the pay check run things, worst case is another poor season and another HC.
Oh wait, we as fans deserve more right? We spend our hard earned money and we expect those paid players to put their bodys and careers on the line to make us happy. Working in customer service gives me a different opinion of the way the world spins, none of us are special, it’s still Al’s team and he can run it into the dirt if he wants. That’s not the case, I still believe he wants one more ring before coaching up above, but I highly doubt anyone from here can do a better job, but who am I to cast the finger of doubt?
September 16th, 2010 at 11:55 am
yeah i figured it probably wouldn’t be a sell out too but just hoping shoot even if we won in Tenn i doubt it would be a sell out, i wish al would fork up the cash like other clubs last year did to declare it a sell out, chargers and bucs bought there seats at a real discount to get it on tv

To those people who are being Al-apologists and saying silly things like “when Al dies the Raiders have no heart”.
The problem is you’re standing for blind loyalty itself, the notion of it.
Where you’re at error is suggesting that blind loyalty to Al somehow makes you or somehow means a person is a “true” Raider fan.
I have undying loyalty (like all of us do) to the Raiders. That’s our team. Al is a great man, blah blah, who helped shape that team etc. But even after Al dies, the Raiders continue. Showing blind loyalty to Al is irrelevant. If Al’s ways are the direct result of the Raiders stinking for 7 years, why must one show blind loyalty to Al if that person is the catalyst for that team’s woes? If all one is doing is being blindly loyal to Al, then it’s like you dont even care about football, or the Raiders, all you care about is being a fan of a human, win or lose you dont care, as long as you’re there flying the Al flag. You go to the Coliseum and turn your back to the game and just sit there watching Al, that’s what you’re there for. To blindly support and cheer. The game, the team, then is irrelevant to you.
I say this to prove to you that no you do NOT blindly support Al, because you dont do that, go to games to turn your back on the game and just watch adore Al, win or lose doesnt matter, every season is a 16-0 season cos Al is always there and you’re watching him. Yay. No, that’s not true. You know it. You go there to support the Raiders, the actual football team.
Halas and Brown too reached their moments and the fans pleading for them to gracefully pull aside. The Bears and Browns continue. Fans support a team, a tribal thing, belong to a clan (Raider-Nation, not Al-Nation).
I dont think you’ll find ONE Raider fan who does not respect Al, all his achievements, what he’s done to create the Raider thing. And we all love him for who he is. He’s cool, still is. We love the guy as a guy. But that doesn’t mean we have to sell our souls, abandon our principles, our football sense, and just sit there suffering thru this phase of Raiders where you have a very old control-freak owner who is just sitting there reminiscing and soaking it all up counting the days off till he passes away, and thus hurting this organization from making a genuine surge towards greatness again.

You have one point that i will agree with, Davis is in a class by himself because he is a football man, this separates him from every one on the list, with the exception of the 2nd generation guys you mentioned. Also just because you heard it doesnt make it true. just because we dont hear about other owners that doesnt mean that they dont themselves get involved. But again when you have accumulated OVER 50 YEARS OF FOOTBALL KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE, YOU ARE IN A LEAGUE OF YOUR OWN.
Besides noe of what you said counters my point. When an employee / coach, doesnt do what he is told by the owner of the team/ business, he will be fired!! this is true in every walk of life, not just at the coliseum.

the 49ers are gradually getting better?

September 16th, 2010 at 12:27 pm
That’s what tradition is about. You HONOR the greats of your TEAM. Every single one of those who helped make it great. Players, Coaches, and Al. Ie, when Al passes on, the Raiders WILL continue, and they will HONOR him with all the appropriate stuff—like keeping to certain traditions like never changing uniform, no retiring of numbers, being a bad-ass organization (the Ravens manage this without an Al, for example), naming things after him, putting A.D. on the sleeves in perpetuity, etc etc.
And the Raider-Nation will continue and grow and all the future years of success WILL be done to HONOR Al. Al’s honoring and respect will always be there everytime a Raider puts on a jersey and the fans fill the Coliseum.
This thing of “no Al no Raiders” is BS self-brain-washing, it’s cult-ish. Like the moment Al dies, you cancel the team, cancel it’s history, and pull out of the NFL forever. Do you not realize that doing that, for example, would be everything that Al would not stand for, would not want, and that it would mean you’re preventing Al from living on a hundred years from now.
Pull your heads in FFS. We love and respect Al, but there’s nothing wrong (in fact everything right) with fans/media/beat-writers being upset with Al like when you give someone an intervention in order for them to snap out of it and start putting things right. Cos it being righted (success) means Al’s name and legacy is HONORED better.
September 16th, 2010 at 12:30 pm
But again when you have accumulated OVER 50 YEARS OF FOOTBALL KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE, YOU ARE IN A LEAGUE OF YOUR OWN.

That knowledge was useful 25 years ago. Not so much these days. What has it gotten us lately?
And this:
“When an employee / coach, doesnt do what he is told by the owner of the team/ business, he will be fired!! ”
Football isn’t like other businesses. The only thing most owners tell their coaches is “Win.” With Davis, it’s not that way. It’s “Win how I tell you to.”

again the big picture is the key here, i understand the 29-83 is an outrage, but that is beside the point. The point is plenty of teams that supposedly have non meddling owners have a longer drought than we do. September 16th, 2010 at 12:53 pm
What will be even funnier is Singletary thanking S Payton Sunday after they lose like he did P Carroll
***
yeah, the Saints are about 100 times better than the Seaturds!
September 16th, 2010 at 12:55 pm
Maybe some people would rather be viking fans, lots of playoff runs, no super bowl jewelry. Or a team that wins in the regular season year in and year out but never qualifies for the big one.
September 16th, 2010 at 12:56 pm
The Niners might actually lose by MORE than 25 this week… I have Brees, Im hoping he puts up some astronomical #s Monday… like say 400yds 5tds
September 16th, 2010 at 12:56 pm
JLH & Ford were both active week 1 so having Figurs return kicks or even being on the roster was a complete waste of a spot. N Miller or S Brown could have been in that slot but I guess it will Pears.
lmao

Theres 31 other teams that will kick you in the butt every chance they get.
Draft picks are 50/50 for the most. Lots of it has to do with luck and getting the top 5 QB which can make all the diff in the world.
Cowboys and Jets are HUGE money markets.
Jets have not sniffed a SB in a gazillion years.
Cowcracks have won one? playoff game in the past 12 years or so
September 16th, 2010 at 12:58 pm
RR,
I dont know if you saw it last week or maybe the week before. Fat Runt says he was eating dinner with Jerry and your name came up as someone who emails Jerry and complains about the Runt.
Just an FYI..

herm edwards said “you play to win the game” Oakland is super bowl or bust, that is the Davis way. Based on the list i gave you the davis way is more succesful than most. This is why we have been to a confrence championship at least once in every decade since the 60’s. this is why we have played in a superbowl in almost every decade, save 1.

I was a year and a half old the last time the Raiders won their Super Bowls. I admire the stories and films and whatnot of the Raider legends of the past, but for most of my remembered life, this team has been mediocre at best.
And after 29-84….yeah, you’re damn right I’d take some wins in the regular season.
Let’s say the Raiders pull a move like the Jets did last year: get hot at the end, squeak into the playoffs and then go on a miracle run to the AFC Championshp only to get knocked out.
Do you think I’d be pissed? F#!k no, man! I’d be sorry they lost, but at this point the joy that comes with winning games is enough for me.
Let’s get a few winning records and a couple playoff berths in a row and then I’ll start complaining about never making a Super Bowl

I e-mailed Becker before though, to offer condolences after the loss of his father

Another point not to be missed is tigers dont change their stripes. the Rooney family has a certain way they run things, it worked in the 7O’s and it worked recently, however for most of the 80’s and part of the 90’s they sucked. did they change how they do things? NO! What do you know they are winners again, doing things the way they always have. New coke is always a bad idea. Football like everything else is cyclical, the davis formula is tried and true, we will be back its just a matter of time.

Man I wish I had your optimism mistic… I really do. Oh and BTW… the Steelers have won 6 SB’s and they hardly “sucked” for the 80’s and 90’s…
“In the NFL’s “modern era” (since the AFL-NFL merger in 1970) the Steelers have posted the best record in the league. The franchise has won the most total games, won the most divisional titles, earned the best winning percentage (including every expansion team), earned the most All-Pro nominations and has the most Super Bowl wins (six) since the modern game started in 1970. It is 2nd overall in playoff wins and tied with the Miami Dolphins for most regular-season wins.”
Yup… they suck

Bra you just proved my point, thank you. A very successful team overall that has had plenty of lean years especially in the eighties, and parts of the nineties, but they stayed the course. Oh yeah the stats are a bit misleading, they after all routinely feasted on the likes of the browns, and oilers twice a year in the old afc north.

LMN,
Giants-Dodgers is pretty big in the Bay Area (although I good bunch of Raider Nation probably doesn’t think so).
Was the ESPN game last night, and Danny Glover and Joe Montana were in attendance.

The work that Cable has done with the O-Line will make or break him!
He is stubborn.
Veldheer was drafted as freakin TACKLE and he is reaching to have start at Center?? He should be getting reps and experience as the starting RT!
Barnes should replace that lazy unaware goof Hendu at LT and Satele needs to start back at Center!
Satele at least has more experience than Veldheer.
Veldheer should just be the backup Center and not the srarter??
September 16th, 2010 at 1:55 pm
Dodgers vs. Giants this year – who cares? Just like Broncos vs. Raiders usd to be a really big deal. Now it only makes news when you get either Shannon Sharpe or Dick-head Sapp doing pre-game commentary!
September 16th, 2010 at 1:55 pm
There was no “old AFC North” There was an “AFC Central” back in the 5 team divisional alignment.
September 16th, 2010 at 1:56 pm
Cables work (or lack of work) with the O-Line will make or break him!
I also hate that it always seems like the Raider coaches are consistently out schemed and out coached during the game by opposing coaches.
It’s embarrassing and it is getting old!

Just to lend a helping hand, why bother arguing about something when these guy’s minds are made up. The want to blame Mr Davis let ‘em. He is the one who’s in charge after all. They hate the Raiders, let ‘em.
Everyone wants to win and no one is making excuses for the record. It is what it is. Why argue about it? I’m more concerned about the next 7 years to hell with the past 7.

Seymour had a triceps injury in the preseason, was excused a few days at camp for “personal reasons” and was given a day off to keep fresh with other vets every so often. I think he skipped OTA’s because he hadn’t signed his franchise tag yet. common thing for franchise guys
now he’s got a hamstring issue. hope these little things don’t nag him all season!

Real disappointed in the Raiders this past weekend. Spent about 160 bucks to watch them get pounded here in Nashville. Sat by the tunnel hoping for an autograph or something from ANY Raider, heck, even Yamon Figurs! Most of the dudes didn’t even acknowledge that we were there. Not even Darius Heyward Bay! Of anyone on that team, he should be happy to autograph something. They acted and looked defeated, and it was only halftime. Not a good start Raiders. Not good. Would’ve liked a signature fellas.
