“Playing left tackle, if a guy jumps offsides, I have no chance. None,’’ Henderson said. “And it always looks worse coming from the back side, the blind side.’’
– Following practice, Henderson was in a group of about a dozen players in starting roles huddled around Cable, and then he was pulled aside for a few words and some additional work from line coach Jim Michalczik.
In the locker room, Henderson talked candidly about his struggles and conceded he probably shouldn’t listen to all the criticism and take it to heart.
He said it causes him to lose confidence but realizes “you’ve got to keep playing. I’ve still got to work. Move forward. I’ve just got to block out that negativity. It’s tough, though. I ain’t going to lie. It’s tough, man.’’
Cable said he thinks Henderson has a more “ornery’’ side to him, but admitted Henderson’s sensitivity to outside criticism has been a regular topic of conversation.
“You’re hitting on a real issue there and we do talk about that,’’ Cable said. “You know, what’s done, you’ve got to put it behind you. You learn from it and take what you can, but whether you’re a player or coach, you can get caught up in this stuff to the point where it will control you emotionally.
“He and I have spent a lot of time talking about staying away from that.’’

Rams D-Line:
James Hall
Chris Long
Fred Robbins
Clifton Ryan
***
if these guys abuse our O-Line, I think it’s time to dump half of them and change positions of the other half!
Henderson = RT or bench
Walker = RG or cut
Veldheer = LT or bench
Satele = C
Barnes = LT or RT
Pears = blocking TE or bench
Campbell = ???
Carlisle & Gallery = average NFL guards, but probably good enough to get it done if the Tackles & Center handled their business

“I’m not going to make more of it than I should,” Long said. “I’m really appreciative of everything they did for my Pops. The organization and the fans were really great. But I’ve never really been there much. I went to a couple of games when I was really, really young. For me, I grew up in Virginia, so it’s kind of going to be a surreal experience.”
From the Rams site.

Join Jerry McDonald for some news and in-depth analysis….
In-depth analysis. Hmmmmmm.
In-depth analysis is fine. It’s fun. It makes a blog informative. It keeps a blog interesting.
But when it comes to fixing the Raiders, at this point in time, we don’t need an in-depth analysis.
Sometimes, the most simple and obvious solution to a problem is the best solution.
What is obvious, and what we tend to overlook with our in-depth analysis of the Raiders is this;
The NFL, now, more than ever, is a QB driven league.
It’s that simple folks. It really is.
It’s virtually impossible to consistently win and be a threat to take the whole ball of wax without a top notch QB.
Sure, once every couple of decades a really great defense allows a Trent Dilfer to win a SB. But this is a rarity. An exception to the rule.
Case in point…The New York Jets.
Here’s a team with a fabulous defense and a great offensive line, but it’s hard to imagine them winning a SB with Mark Sanchez at QB.
Obviously, to win it all, it’s essential that a team be solid in all aspects of the game, but it’s almost impossible to be a legit SB contender without a premier QB.
The crap that the Raiders have masquerading as an OL pretty much eliminates them from SB contention. In fact, it makes it difficult for them to even be competitive. Difficult, but not impossible.
Make no mistake, with a good QB the Raids would at least be competitive. But that’s not going to be the case in 2010 unless Jason Campbell elevates his game.
Frankly, I don’t think JC is up to the task.
Bluntly, I think he’s a bum.
We’ll find out in the next few weeks.
If JC can’t lead this team and put some points up, we aren’t going to be competitive.
One thing is sure, we need to score points and be able to pass the ball in order to get back on track.
Lack of a passing game is the Raids greatest problem.
You bet our OL sucks and our WRs are green, but ultimately it comes down to the guy behind center being able to overcome adversity, make things happen, and lead the team to victory.
I’m tired of 3 and outs on offense and 6 point leads appearing to be insurmountable.
Man, I hope I’m wrong about Campbell.

September 17th, 2010 at 6:48 am
Don’t want to upset you but they also said this….
“Last week against the Cardinals, the defense was extremely aggressive in getting up the field and getting after the quarterback. That’s the identity the Rams want to create for themselves defensively and an identity that is openly embraced by Long and his teammates”.

Playing pre season games are worthless you get no indication of how the team is gonna fair against defenses. Everything Is vanilla. If pre season was indicative then we should have won on sun. Pre season B.S. Just start the frigging season rite after camp closes it was a waste here in Oakland. Sundya the offense look nuthin like the pre season. We look good against vanilla. It’s sad but now were really gonna see what’s goin on with our team. I hope tenn was just a better team in part of execution an for that they won. An we see better for here on out. Otherwise it’s Gina b a loooong season folks
September 17th, 2010 at 7:26 am
Props to Raiderman.
Thats says it all.
Trade Nnamdi for a proven Olineman and draft picks.
Then draft a QB in the middle rounds every year and hope we strike gold.
Al can trade for someones backup but that has not been working lately

Montel: Welcome back to the show, ladies and gentleman. Tough topic today — we’re talking about the cycle of abuse and the costly toll it can take on such a sensitive soul.
We’ve already heard the stories of young Susie and Jennifer, now I’d like to have someone else share their tale of a dark, dark world of constant abuse.
Mario?
Mario Henderson (sobbing): Thanks, Montel. T-t-this is just really hard, you know? I try as hard as I can, but I just keep getting beat and beat and abused and verbally assaulted on what seems to be a weekly basis.
Montel: It’s ok, sweetie. Do you need a tissue?
Mario Henderson (breaking down, snot spraying): Yes, please….
Susie consoles him and Jennifer clutches his hand in a warm embrace.

Run run run…
If our pass offense is pathetic we have no chance against the Rams or long-term this season. A run game helps establish a pass game, and vice versa. It’s been our problem thruout the McFadden/Bush era. They press and stack the box, knowing we called dive and dive. Put us in third and long, pinned their ears back with a variety of zone/man blitzes and our OL is softer than wet tissue.
The key to us winning is whether we cant establish a legitimate passing attack. I dont mean dumps and screens because our OL cant hold. I mean from the opening snap, our OL able to hold for 3-5 seconds, sealing the pocket, and allowing Campbell to cycle thru his receivers.
How many years now have our opening drives been three and outs? We cannot make a drive of any sort. Not just opening drive, but pretty much every drive of the first half. It’s a freaking embarrassment and a burning indictment on Al’s neglect of the OL for almost a decade now.
You’ll all know from our opening offensive drive…if we can create and seal a pocket allowing Campbell to hit receivers all over the place, then the Raiders offense is legit. If the Raiders OL doesnt do this, and/or, we start off going dive dive incompletion. It’s gonna be another long afternoon.
September 17th, 2010 at 8:47 am
Bauce B-B-B-Bauce B-B-B-Bauce
September 17th, 2010 at 8:47 am
You know, the very reason all our play-callers over the last 7 years have been calling dive dive is because they all know the OL is pathetic and cannot support a legitimate passing game. Not just a legitimate one, but not even a semblance of an NFL one.
Patriots, Colts, even Rams, Falcons, Dolphins etc, you name the org, their first and second snaps are often passes. They can do it whenever if ever they want, on any down, because it’s functional. We cant and have to fall on a hopeless third and long tell-tale pass.
September 17th, 2010 at 8:48 am
Rewatched the Rams Cards game, Bradford looked really good for a rook. I wonder what its like to draft a QB that works out????

September 17th, 2010 at 8:52 am
We better win, bauce. But the thing i want to see is an actual NFL-standard passing game.
September 17th, 2010 at 8:53 am
If we dont win this blog is gonna go to the dogs! The knives will be out, and despair will flow thru the org.
September 17th, 2010 at 8:53 am
hue is best advised to use JLH this week for more than a few snaps
September 17th, 2010 at 8:54 am
Or we look back at our 14-2 season and say, the only two teams we lost too were the eventual Super Bowl combatants…Titans v Rams part II lol
September 17th, 2010 at 8:55 am
Ya get JLH invilved in some shallow crossing routs, get rid of all the deep stuff for right now. The Oline can’t handle the deep routes.
September 17th, 2010 at 8:57 am
Just have DHB run deep flys all day. Don’t throw it to him. Just have him run, might as well get something out of him.

3 WR slant routes. WR screens and swing passes. All Welkerish for a guy like Higgins to excel at (as that Russell-Higgins TD from a few years back demonstrated). How often have we called those over the last 2-3 years? The Colts overdose on slants and do a lot of Air Coryell too. Surely it’s not that hard to play-call a variety of things to ensure the defense is hesitant, on their heels unsure.
Mix of slants, hitches, deep routes, WR screens, dives, tosses, etc, in like a consecutive chain of downs. Even if we dont complete the passes, just to show the opposition we’re unpredictable would help our offense the rest of the day.
September 17th, 2010 at 9:16 am
Having to observe the 8th consecutive debacle start to the season from the other side of the world does give a unique pespective i guess. It is frustrating to feel that for the first time for a long time, that we had some (false?) hope going into the opener. It’s that really uncomfortable feeling of ‘how naive are we?’ I truly felt that the 2010 Raiders were different to the last 3 years of JaMeatball-and-sauce that we were dished up, but now i’m not so sure…
I don’t want to ‘hate’ but the signs aren’t great. I can’t fathom the O-line alignments, espcially from a supposed guru coach. Walker was ordinary at best several years ago. Let’s face it, unless you want a kick blocked what is he doing on the 53 man roster? Carlisle was done 2 years ago, Satele/Veldheer is a total debacle, Gallery is that really expensive, delicate crystal wine glass that you never want to use in case it gets broken, and the less said about ’super’ Mario the better.
I have always felt that Run DMC was a good pick and truly believe that he would have dominated at a mildly functional franchise (DHB – not so much). I will bleed Silver & Black for the rest of my days but I this has gotten beyond ridiculous.
It is time to put a HC in charge who is not a puppet (no disrespect intended Mr Davis) who can draw the roster into a cohesive unit that will be greater than the sum of its collective parts.

not as much as Mario should check the snap-count. Why did the Raiders draft a Zoolander LT who can’t turn left? Does he pass out tickets as he lets people breeze by him?
September 17th, 2010 at 9:30 am
If Spag has half a brain in his head, he will pund the rock.
We should do the same.
Because Cable doesn’t have quite a half a brain in his, we’ll probably keep passing with a 6 man O Line…
I was Cable’s biggest supporter for a while. Now it’s come time to win games. No more Russell as an excuse. I know Campbell is garbage, but Russell was the bacteria collecting on garbage, so Jason is still an upgrade.

I predict…
-Mcfadden will have another solid game
-The Raiders have 5 sacks as a team (2 by Wimbley)
-DHB finaly gets a nice deep pass thrown his way, and he catches it.
-Steven Jax, held under 100 yards
-Stan Routt has an int
-Jason Campbell stays off the ground and gives up on awkward sliding.
-The black hole smothers Zach Miller after he catches a TD in the 1st quarter
-Howie Long’s son admits he secretly wants to play for the Raiders.
Print that! lol
Raiders win 17-10
September 17th, 2010 at 9:30 am
-Cable started Eugene over Huff in 08!
-Cable thinks he can do miracles with the OL.
-Cable started Fargas over DMC & Bush!!
-Cable runs a soft camp, and our practice doesn’t prepare us for games.
-Cable doesn’t adjust well at halftime!
Cable should be fired!

Speaking of people needing to step up this weekend, I am going to throw my wife on that list.
Her whole, “just eat what is leftover in the fridge” for opening week, was a very Jason Campbell like effort, and having no real snacks on hand was a very Tom Cable-like lack of preparation.
When the Bauce said we all should take a shot, and I hopped up and took down a shot of Crown, I didn’t need the rolling of the eyes and the subsequent “you need to start buying some of YOUR OWN bottles!!” Very un-BAUCE like, and too high-strung, like our team played as well.
We are all looking at you “wife”. Step it up this week!!!
September 17th, 2010 at 9:32 am
Mario played pretty well to close the 08 season (although he did get help). Also played pretty well when Bruce was in there, keeping him in check.
The guy not only has zero confidence, but he and the coaches openly talk about it with the national media….
Guys on notice for this game:
Cable
Campbell
Henderson
JLH
Tyvon
September 17th, 2010 at 9:34 am
I forgot to add:
Our OL is garbage, and I blame Cable!
Walker at RT!
Cooper at G!
Fire Cable!!
September 17th, 2010 at 9:34 am
Raider O – i agree. I truly thought that when i woke up and opened NFL.com the day after the opening game that the headline would be “Raiders cut off Cable, Jackson handed the reins”
September 17th, 2010 at 9:38 am
I remember the Raiders of the 70’s. True they were superior in talent to the personnel we have now. But can you imagine Art Shell after a game where he got Stabler bullrushed and beaten….not that it happened….but can you imagine what the teammates would do to him. They’d go all hamburger hill on him and give him a rope-a-dope cot beating.
Mario H. needs a hug from Oprah. Get him some masengil.

His camp is not Soft.
He doesn’t call the plays.
He is not the OL coach.
If that’s the case, then why do we need him?!

We’re just like Crocodile Dundee only tougher, bigger and meaner – in fact, Cable should draft 5 Aussie blokes to man the O-line!

LMAO !!

September 17th, 2010 at 9:41 am
It really bothers when guys like Lefty start talking crap trying to defend a weak HC like Cable.
His camp is not Soft.
He doesn’t call the plays.
He is not the OL coach.
If that’s the case, then why do we need him?!
**********************
Some possible reasons:
• We need a time out coordinator
• AD needs someone available to fire without really impacting team performance
• Someone has to be available to go for the burgers & slaw
• Monogrammed shirts were already ordered and AD doesn’t want to waste the expense
• Someone needed to fill the role of “Will work for Burgers & Slaw”
September 17th, 2010 at 9:51 am
Picking coaches is a lot like flipping a coin.
Coughlin in NY has been on the hot seat for his entire tenure. He has underperformed the entire time except for a 9? game streak that ended in beating the cheating pats. He was about to be foired midseason.
I would like to see a list of cantidates that are SURE WINNERS. Its a real short list, especially when you throw in get along with the GM.
Cable has made great strides and he gets one more year or at least part of it. I want him to win. I want the Raiders to win.
For all practical purposes, Hue took over the team when Al read TC the riot act. Hue is running the O and Hue decided to switch or start switching to a power blocking scheme instead of the ZBS.
Dont blame TC, he has become more of a manager then a head coach
just saying
September 17th, 2010 at 9:52 am
Add one more:
• AD needed someone with a strong pimp hand to be available to significantly strike JHenderson before each game to get him in the right frame of mind.
September 17th, 2010 at 9:52 am

Maybe, rather than talking to MHenderson before each game about his attitude, TC needs to use a little JHenderson before game stimulation on MHenderson. Go ahead and spread it around Tom. Smack every player as they exit he locker room. Send them the message that you care – a good smack will do them good.

I was Cable’s biggest supporter for a while. Now it’s come time to win games.
——
This is the gist of it. Time to put up or shut up. Too much BS and smoke-blowing, week after week after year.
Too much incompetence and ill-preparation deflected post-game with “something to build on”. That’s what training camp is for. That you hit the ground running week 1.
But sub-standard coaching talent like Cable, Al shares the blame, and why the Raiders ‘training camp’ tends to last till mid November.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:01 am
The team is saying there was some offsides on Sunday and Nnamdi21 also said that’s what it looked like when he slowed it down.
Question: Why the F wasn’t there someone in the booth watching that and relaying it back to Cable so that he could rip the refs a new one and at least get them to pay closer attention? You if Fisher was on the other side of that, he would have lit those refs up.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:02 am

Being confident is essential in all-sports, but being over-confident is the stupidest thing you can do.
I always liked Lou Holtz in that way. If Notre Dame was set to play Army, he would talk up Army like they were the Hurricanes, than go beat them by 50 points.
How could a 5-11 team be overconfident going into Tennessee? I hang that on the coaching staff.

Gallery…should be RT or Guard.
Barnes…should be swing Tackle and Guard.
Satele…should be back-up Center.
Veldheer…should be Guard or RT.
Campbell…should be LT.
Walker…should be Guard.
Henderson….should be RT.
Obviously some/most of those still need to be cut or back-ups. We need to upgrade the OL yearly every draft, make some trades, phase out that over-abundance of RTs, get more specialist Centers and Guards and Left Tackles.
Sure, Campbell and Veldheer could help out being versatile, but is that really gonna help THEM. They need to get in there and master their natural positions, where their specific athleticisms and talents are.
It’s like putting a speedy LB at WR and thinking that’ll help him get some snaps, help the team because it’s down a WR. But is it really helping that LB be a better LB.
From the onset of camp, Campbell was thrown into the RG role. Having to learn it from scratch rather than honing his Tackle skills. Like making a right-handed person learn how to write left-handed all camp instead of improving his natural handed writing. So he goes thru months of OTAs and camp like a fish out of water, struggling to adapt to interior line play when his great athletic talents are being wasted.

As some1 who played football for roughly 6 years I know what being Over Confident can do to you… It’s easy to be over confident if you have a new team and your believing in the hype of your team. Thats why they lacked so much passion they thought they could go out there and the game was going to be handed to them and ended up getting punched in the mouth.. Play every game like its your last and you will win games

Cable has that same look that Shell Part II had on the sidelines. Just staring blankly towards the field. Partially castrated of more decision-making, but also rightfully castrated given his incompetence as a head coach, strategist, craftsman of talent.
His timing is always off when he does get excited. Like fist-pumping a last minute TD that makes the score 38-13, taking a white-flag-waving FG end of the half down 31-3, like throwing a challenge flag when he did.
Dungy can get away with that demeanor because he’s actually a great coach. Cable is just some position coach who was happy to accept a HC gig due to the unique and embarrassing Kiffin saga. Thrust into a role way out of his depth purely because he could/would toe the company line, sell his principles to be a puppet.
Al is to blame, he’s the invisible man pulling the strings that makes this whole thing even exist, not just now, but for the last 8 years since the Gruden-Allen departure. So many embarrassments like the Gannon/Herrera incidents. Etc. Not like we want a homogenized Raiders, bereft of attitude and mean-streak. But that all HAS TO first come from a place of great professionalism and avoiding self-delusion at all costs. Since Al cocooned the Raiders post-Gruden, this organization has moved away from being a trend-setting hard-edged professionalism to an organization propping up the megalomania of its much-loved Owner.

Cable wont play Bush. Probably better in the long run for Bush anyway.
I see nothing to indicate that the offense can generate points or produce at all.
A starting OL lost to injury, uncertainty at center,
penalties, poor O-tackle play.
I think we are better off giving the rook reps at center.
Once again falling behind Sunday, unable to produce on offense, slow death not being able to stop the run.

We really need JLH to get the ball this week. Hope they play him in the slot and let him run lots of shallow slants. Then when you get the D defending the slant to one side of the field, BAM! screen the other way.
September 17th, 2010 at 10:50 am
apparently there’s a bit more filtering on US blogs than in Australia, i’d better try again and tone it down a bit…
Raiders need to toughen up, stop sooking and play the angry, violent, aggressive style that we all love. Instead of crying about their ‘feelings’ and ‘confidence’ they need to remember that they chose to play a contact sport. So, the official message from Australia to any Raider players who may be paying attention:
Dry your eyes princess, show some balls and prove to the RaiderNation that you are worth our love and respect. Just Win Baby!

I’m ok with running out of bounds on the field goal try because he was not going to get the first down anyways. That slide had me hot. I don’t care that he said he didn’t knoiw where the marker was. What is worse, a QB that won’t dive for a FD or a QB who dosn’t know where he is on the field?
September 17th, 2010 at 10:55 am

September 17th, 2010 at 10:57 am
The Raiders should right the ship this weekend.
They’re better than what they showed last Sunday.
Look, even when Russell was in there in last year’s opener, these guys were fired up. Henderson-Gallery-Morris-Coop-Cornbread were mauling SD’s front.
The only reason we stayed close is because SD was physically outmatched and our D was flying and the O was doing just enough with some good running from DMC and Bush and a a big play from Murphy (really two, but we won’t go there).
As soon as they went soft and started ‘thinking’ out there, SD gets a way-too-easy late drive to win.
We scrapped in the 1st KC game despite looking very ugly.
We scrapped in the 2nd KC game and nearly won (lost on a great Bruce pass that clanked off the hands-like-feet of DHB), even with Russell playing the 1st half.
We beat the Eagles. We beat the Steelers. We were competitive for 3.5 quarters against the Ravens.
This team can play.
Getting rid of Russell was addition by subtraction.
As ridiculous as it may sound, the pummeling we received at the hands of the Titans could be the best thing to happen to the 2010 Raiders.
They read too many press clippings saying the Silver and Black were back.
They were humbled.
Now, they’ve got a home opener against a weak(er) opponent and can get to 1-1, making it a 14 game season.
Just a little momentum is all a team needs.
The snowball effect can work either way…..
September 17th, 2010 at 10:58 am

What?
Henderson made the touchdown saving tackle.
By accident of course, the recoverer actually ran into his legs while Mario was staring into space.
It took a trip to the replay booth to show that he had been touched while on the ground, or more accurately, ran into henderson’s socks while on the ground.

September 17th, 2010 at 11:03 am
In Henderson’s defense, the Titan’s were constantly over the line ahead of the ball being snapped. A good head coach would have gotten that stopped.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:04 am
Mario should of fell on that fumble like it was a hot brownie with ice cream on top.
September 17th, 2010 at 11:10 am
The key to Sunday’s game needs to be establishing the run early. Cable has issued the challenge to his guys; he came right out and told the Rams they will be running the ball, and the OL needs to execute. With Henderson, Loper, Veldheer, Carlisle and Walker they should be able to push open some holes on any defensive line, that is a HUUUUGE O-line. If they can get McFadden loose early and often it will set up much easier play-actions and screens later in the game. Our problem in Tenn. was we came out slinging and the D-line (with help from the noise and refs) was looking for the screen and lived in our backfield the whole game. Once they got the lead, then they knew we were passing, so the pressure was even fiercer. Got a keep them hesitant with the run, from the very first offensive snap. Whether or not the line can produce remains to be seen. Even in garbage time last week, the offense failed to do much of anything. Hopefully that is something they can fix, but I am on the record as saying this will be a low scoring Raiders LOSS.
I predict a score of 13-6 Rams, Cable spins his post-game press conference as the Raiders D was so stout, and the offense is “figuring some things out”, Cable gone after week 4 with little fanfare and no overhead projecters, and Hue Jackson opens week 5 with a loss.

I’m afraid all you guys who predicted the Raiders would move the ball but make mistakes leaving the Rams in it until the Rams pull away with a big play or too late are looking spot on.
And for the second straight week I’m found wanting Gradkowski in for Campbell by the end of the 1st quarter.

A field goal, not a TD. What is wrong with the Raiders? If not for the Rams’ mistakes they would not even be in this game.

The Raiders do not have the personnel to run a vertical game. The O Line is not good enough to give the QB time. The WRs cannot get open. All of these long drops hoping for something to happen is embasassing. Need quick strike short passes to loosen up the D. Send in Grads.
