I met Jason Campbell in Nashville last week when I flew there to watch the game and even then his demeanor was calm. I definitely like Bruce’s style and think he should start for our team
September 19th, 2010 at 11:54 pm
What was Campbell supposed to do give you a pep talk?
September 20th, 2010 at 12:02 am
will be interesting to see how good we can be when we get the rest of our team back. gallery chaz bush on offense, seymour WMC goethel on defense. if we make the right personnel moves NOW with the proper rotation of subs then we can really do some things. alot of point left on the board.
September 20th, 2010 at 12:13 am
They’ll be pretty good when Bush comes back because he brings a lot to the table. But this is a process like the coaches are saying. I just a 4-4 record at midseason then we have areal chance at the division. DHB and Murphy are finall starting to show signs that they can carry the load at WR with JLH in at slot. That is a good passing attack.
But I wnat tos seee DMC continue to make a impact on the passing game. Just keep getting better each week.
September 20th, 2010 at 12:14 am
Priest, you are probably correct about Veldheer moving to center. One of the scenarios I had was it sounded like an AD move. The other was Cable wanted the 5 best Olinemen playing and had to decide who hurt the team more-Satele or Henderson-so he went with benching Satele 1st.After the 1st game I believe he realized our weak link was Henderson so therefore V was put back at LT.But you have to admit, moving V to center sounds like something Davis would approve of.
September 20th, 2010 at 12:21 am
Picture #9-hey ref.,ever heard of face guarding? Here is a perfect example and it is illegal.
September 20th, 2010 at 12:24 am
Sure I think he would and did, but I don’t think he suggested it. He knows the coaches have to get these players to play well if he’s telling them what to do with them how can they. He might as well coach them himself. It’s hard enough to do that job with out that. I think they do what they think they need to do to win and as long as they win he’s fine with it.
If your stumbling around and not getting the best out of players that’s when he wants to know what your objective is. He doesn’t coach for them they have to do that, or he’ll fire them.
September 20th, 2010 at 12:33 am
I don’t know Priest,I could see him suggesting it.I’m sure he and Cable discuss things and I can imagine Cable saying he believes V is one of the 5 best linemen and Davis saying well lets try him here.I’m not saying that is what happened but I could see it playing out that way.
September 20th, 2010 at 12:34 am
Why do you think he would do that?
September 20th, 2010 at 12:36 am
Because he wants to win and help out any way he can.
September 20th, 2010 at 12:39 am
Don’t you believe he makes suggestions?
September 20th, 2010 at 12:45 am
Well I know he does, but it’s a very difficult line to tred when you’re telling coaches where to play players. I’ve known him to be very upset as to how a player is being utilized yet let them his coaches do it. I’ve seen coaches refuse to play players he ants them to play.
He is so knowledgeable that people think he demands things that he doesn’t because they’ll hear the coach say how much he talks to them and how knowledgeable he is and people assume that everything the coach does is dictated by him. You have to prove competence and self sufficience to coach for him. What he demands is why’s and wherefores he wants to know why you did it the way you did especially if it didn’t work.
September 20th, 2010 at 12:52 am
Lefty12
most of what Mr davis does is done in the offseason once the season starts he wants them to get it done. The thought that he interfers during the season comes from the media because they know how much he knows.
What you see happening during the season is 98% the coaches he evaluates them at the end of the season to see if they agree and he scrutinizes them mostly then. They’re way to busy during the season.
September 20th, 2010 at 12:53 am
Caption in the picture is wrong, Huff is 24, not Rout.
September 20th, 2010 at 12:53 am
Cable has said he wants to learn from him. Can’t you picture during one of their talks him saying something to the effect that if you think he is one of the top 5 why not try him here.Or Cable saying he is one of the top 5 what do you think of trying him here and he says sounds ok,lets give it a shot.
September 20th, 2010 at 12:54 am
I’ve been in the Lockeroom after games when he cmes in there to see how the players are feeling or reacting to the game. But he let’s the coaches do their thing.
September 20th, 2010 at 12:56 am
But that’s in the offseason mostly b4 the draft and FA to determine what players to bring in or move. Mr Davis is heavy into the biulding of the team and personnel moves. All of which happens in the offseason.
September 20th, 2010 at 1:03 am
Well, its late,I think I’ll call it a night. It sure is a lot nicer after a win,but I imagine a lot of biotching will start in the morning when all the expert GMs check in.Nite Priest.

September 20th, 2010 at 1:15 am
Nice suplex RO, dont blame the 15 yard penalty he took for helping the Rams to score their 2nd TD…there was a couple knuckle head T.Kelly penalties before the suplex, how many times does he almost throw games away by losing his discipline?? saw L.Houston cussing him out..apart from that series and 1st quarter the D was ok
props to Dmac for laying out Dahl and running low and hard every play, now your a weapon not a target
props to the whole offence after Bruce entered the game
good week for everyone GO RAIDERSSSSS

Liking what I see. Cable ditching the Davis philosophy and getting us back to Kiffin’s game plan. And, we’re getting results. We bench the Davis prodigy and put in the QB that Gruden drafted (so much for Gruden not being able to draft…), and suddenly things are clicking. Hope Al doesn’t step in and screw it up.
September 20th, 2010 at 2:27 am
@Raiders4eve That link isn’t working for me. Does it work for you? I’ve been trying since midnight with no luck!!

Hey Priest:
Your post#10 on the last thread was a great post.
My thoughts exactly.
September 20th, 2010 at 3:08 am
We made very hard work out of beating a very poor team.Happy with the win but not with the performance.
September 20th, 2010 at 3:14 am
LMN….
Bad day for you yesterday.Only 1 win out of 3.I hope the Raiders win cheers you up a bit.
September 20th, 2010 at 5:28 am
Sure feels good after a win! NOW is the time that the coaches have to od their job.
No slaps on the back come Monday. It should be about fixing problems. They should look at this game against Arizona like they are the underdog!
Again, game plan for this week…stop the doggone run and let Derek Anderson beat you.
Nnamdi should be assigned to Larry Fitzgerald all game. I don’t care about scheme here…Nnamdi shut that guy down all the damn day, coupled with a stout run defense equals victory.
Keep the same conservative short passing game…limit/eliminate the 7-step and let Gradkowski hit the slants and quick comebacks….
Going 2-1 would be huge.
September 20th, 2010 at 5:29 am
Also,
Jason Campbell needs to be released. There should be no more QB controversey. Let Gradkowski prepare as the starter with no nonsense in the background.
$4.5M is too much for a backup anyway and Kyle Boller can do the job.
Re-sign that kid from Hawaii and let him develop
September 20th, 2010 at 5:31 am
Gradkowski should be given the remainder of the season:
1. Jason Campbell has proven he can’t play at this level
2. We need to see how GRadkowski plays against the better teams who have had a chance to gameplan him
3. We also need to know whether Gradkowski is:
-The next rags to riches story like Kurt Warner
or
-The next Shaun Hill/JT O’Sullivan/Jon Kitna
September 20th, 2010 at 5:39 am
A wins a win,but this was against the worst team in the nfl,i guess this could be termed a “bad win”. Cable still appears to be totally clueless. The o-line is a shambles and thats supposed to be his strength–I hope things will improve as the season goes on,i know he is not on the field but cable has to prepare this team better than this. That Tight-end Meyers has the droppsies,he was doing that in preseason games too.
September 20th, 2010 at 5:45 am
The atmosphere was electric, we were the twelfth man on the field! I believe it was us (raider nation) that won that game!
Now we just gotta go to phoenix and do the same…and win!
September 20th, 2010 at 6:10 am
Rockstar,
This Kirk-McClain debate is getting interesting.
Run D, Jags are 21st and we are the same still, at 29th.
Total Defense, they are 29th, we are 11th.

the Raiders won a football game without these guys!
gotta give props to a few of my boys: Darren McFadden, Johnnie Lee Higgins, Michael Huff & John Henderson
I said that Jason Campbell was better than Bruce Gradkowski. I was wrong
Tommy Kelly & Stanford Routt came to play yesterday, despite the stupid penalties so props to Jhill for that. Didn’t see much of McClain besides that bodyslam, which I know got the crowd & defense fired up … while the Rams marched down for a TD!
Veldheer & McClain both still have a LONG ways to go imo
Satele & Loper played well. Walker & Carlisle not too bad. We still don’t have a Left Tackle. one could argue that Mario Henderson played better in the second half, but we know that was all Bruce with his mobility and quick release.
I still saw too many drops! Heyward-Bey, Murphy, Miller, Myers
pretty tight coverage by Branch on that last Rams score. just a good throw & catch imo
LOVED that big hit by Stevie Brown on special teams. loved it!
Darren McFadden = DB Killer. lowered the BOOM! on thier strong safety and took him out of the series. then knocked the mouthpeice out of OJ Atogwe
Where are all the DMAC haters ???? no injuries, no fumbles, he’s breaking tackles and looking like a starting RB out there
Dell, do the right thing and trade him to Dakota for his backup kicker or something. the only reason you grabbed him was trade bait for Dakota. now that he’s producing you back down on your word? not cool brother
September 20th, 2010 at 6:14 am
I hate to let all the air out of the balloon but I wont be surprised if J Campbell starts next week. Its a road game against a defense that gave up 41pts, & there wont be any pressure from the crowd to bring in Bruce if Campbell throws a pick or 2. I think the Arizona game will probably be Jason Campbell’s last chance to show he can lead this team to wins, if he fails to do anything other than that, the job will belong to Bruce for the reast of the season.
September 20th, 2010 at 6:17 am
Dakota and I had one helluva FF matchup. My props to his victory 160.13-154.01. See you in the playoffs Dakota.

This Kirk-McClain debate is getting interesting.
Run D, Jags are 21st and we are the same still, at 29th.
***
JFB, i’m staying true to my original prediction
I saw Alford & Bryant out there next to Tommy Kelly and Stephen Jackson shredded the interior D-Line as TK was doubled. John Henderson played A LOT in that second half and Jackson was stuffed like a turkey!
for all that about Huff not being able to tackle, shut your collective pieholes. the guy wasn’t even 100 percent this week and I saw him with great coverage and instincts on run plays. He brought down that bruiser Action Jackson solo, twice.
September 20th, 2010 at 6:21 am
John Henderson looked good, and even though they announced Bryant as the starter, John was out there on the first play and was in a lot more than the 15-20 plays they seemed determined to play him.
RoMac still made a few mistakes, but he is clearly very strong against the run and physical. Jackson had 11 carries for 19 yards after the first quarter, and McClain was around the ball just about everyone of those 11 carries.
September 20th, 2010 at 6:22 am
vegas, after todays game we’re still 29th on run defense?

September 20th, 2010 at 6:24 am
AZ Cards game is far from being “in the bag”
Fitzgerald & Breaston at WR
QB Derek Anderson is not a rookie
RB Tim Hightower is under-rated
key matchups: Darnell Dockett & Dan Williams versus Raiders interior O-Line
Satele, Carlisle & Loper/Gallery better be ready!

I was not a Bruce fan. But I have tremendous respect for production. Its the ONLY thing that matters. Not hype! Not draft status! Not scholarships. The guy produces when asked. This time, he actually looked like a legit QB. There were no blown coverages or seat of your pants throws…he stood in the pocket and delivered the ball in the face of pressue AND hit receivers in tight spaces.
I am not a fan of the giddy up and scramble and play sandlot ball….that stuff runs out of gas real quick…but if Gradkowski can with the way he did yesterday…good on him and lucky for the Raiders.
As for Al Davis starting Campbell against Arizona. If he does that, that might be all for me. I have my opinions, but winning comes 1st, 2nd and 3rd.
Gradkowski is the starter unless the owner doesn’t care about winning.
And if he doesn’t care, then why should I

But yup, still 29th against the run, but #11 overall!!!
Another 100 or so game this weekend and we will be in the low 20’s.
September 20th, 2010 at 6:29 am
Like I said above. I may end the QB controversey right now and declare Gradkowski the starter for the rest of the year….might release Campbell and his big salary. He just doesn’t play the part.
Again, the Raiders have to get these questions answered
1. How does Gradkowski perform when the opponent gets plenty of tape on him and gameplans him? Haven’t seen that yet.
2. Is Gradkowski a rags to riches story or the next Shaun Hill.
Need to know the answers to these questions come offseason. Will depend on if a QB has to be taken early or trade up.
September 20th, 2010 at 6:30 am
S&B
Bruce completed 50 percent of his passes and threw a pick, just like JCamp. He wasn’t exactly Drew Brees out there
but like John Lynch said, he got it done. The biggest question regarding the great Gradkowski going forward is still DURABILITY
the guy has better leadership skills than Prez BO & Jimmy Carter combined!
September 20th, 2010 at 6:31 am
Rockstar,
Key to winning next week.
1. Stop the doggone run and remove Beanie Wells and Hightower from equation. Make Derek Anderson beat you!
2. Nnamdi blankets Fitzgerald all day
3. Bring the heat to Derek Anderson early
Do those 3 things and the Cards are shut down
September 20th, 2010 at 6:31 am
Bruce’s last throw was a thing of beauty.
3rd and long, facing a rush, and drops a perfectly thrown and timed sideline route to Murphy, who didn’t drop it thankfully.
September 20th, 2010 at 6:33 am
Rockstar,
I know. That why my post on Gradkowski questions.
I don’t know (and still don’t think) he’s a long-term solution.
But he the best short term solution for now.
I want the team to compete and with this guy…at least they will compete in more games than they don’t.
Campbell doesn’t have it man. Maybe its the playcalling or maybe his teammates don’t like him.
Regardless, they looked worse than 2006 with him in their.
So play the Gradkowski kid and lets get these questions answered!

Here’s what coach Tom Cable said after the game, according to Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune: “(I) made the switch at halftime at quarterback, basically to just give the team a lift, felt like we needed to change up a little bit and my job is to win games and do whatever it takes to do that.”
Fair enough.
Here’s the quote distributed by the Raiders from Cable: “Today was about winning the game, it does not necessarily mean Campbell is replaced as the quarterback for the rest of the season.”

DHB and Murphy had 6 catches each. Only one each from Campbell. Cable must ask himself why? Must start Bruce until he falters. I want to be 2-1 after Ariz. Not sure if Campbell has the confidence to do it. He seems shell-shocked and I think that is part of the problem. Like Frye and Anderson got in Cleveland.

I don’t think it’s a confidence issue with JCamp. he doesn’t get the ball out or make decisions quick enough for this crummy O-Line. not great pocket awareness either. quite a few “what were you thinking?” throws out there in the 1st half. DHB had 2 steps on his man streaking down the sideline and JCamp overthrew him 3 times, twice out of bounds
the Rams secondary was awful (as I mentioned last week). with Bruce starting that entire game and fewer drops we could have easily hung 35 points on them yesterday

From PFT just posted:
The Raiders now write Tom Cable’s post-game quotes for him
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 20, 2010 9:03 AM ET
In a day full of benched quarterbacks, there was no more surprising move than Tom Cable’s switch to Bruce Gradkowski at halftime of Oakland’s win over St. Louis.
After all, Jason Campbell was the guy Al Davis compared to Jim Plunkett and awarded a contract extension to. The Raiders only trailed 7-3 at halftime. The switch worked, but the quarterback controversy is just starting.
You’ll notice that’s, um, not the same quote. According to McDonald, at no point did Cable say anything so strong about Campbell’s future. Cable did say: “I’ll worry about all that tomorrow, really. I want to go look at it. But today was about winning this game, what did it take to do that, that was the right choice, obviously, and it worked out, and Bruce came in and gave us a lift.”
McDonald has forgotten more about the Raiders than we’ll ever know. He speculates to start his post-game wrap that perhaps Cable’s job was on the line Sunday. Already.
There were a lot of positives for the Raiders to take from the contest, even if they only beat the Rams by two points. Darrius Heyward-Bey (80 yards) had his best game as a pro. They dominated total yardage and won a game they absolutely needed.
But you don’t have to be a “Raider hater” for this all to be familiar. There is coaching controversy; there is mystery over who is calling the shots; there is a quarterback debate.
Above all, there is Raiders drama.
September 20th, 2010 at 7:13 am
Bruce Gradkowski drove the team for 10 points his first two series after starter Jason Campbell was yanked at halftime. Darren McFadden was even better than he was last week, running hard 30 times for 145 yards. Receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey had the best game of his career, and he and Louis Murphy were legitimate play-makers in the second half. We can’t grade them any higher because the offensive line is still a hot mess. Cable can’t really think rotating left tackles is the answer. Campbell looked jittery in the first half, and if not for a roughing the passer late, the Rams were starting to figure out Gradkowski.
The Raiders did a nice job blitzing Sam Bradford early – especially loved the blitz by both safeties that resulted in a Tyvon Branch sack – and then sitting back in coverage when he had to throw late. Lamarr Houston and Kamerion Wimbley also had sacks, and Trevor Scott had numerous pressures. John Henderson, Rolando McClain and Co. also did a nice job shutting down Steven Jackson.
Sebastian Janikowski made three of four field-goal attempts, and Quentin Groves and Michael Huff had big hits on coverage teams. Don’t forget Johnnie Lee Higgins’ 53-yard punt return.
Benching your new starting quarterback – who you have been hyping since you traded for him – was a shocking and debatable move. Especially since Oakland was only down 7-3 to a team that has lost 27 of 28 games. You have no confidence in Jason Campbell to come back from that? But the move worked. The crowd loved it, and there is no arguing Gradkowski provided a spark. The defense was much better at playing together plugging gaps than it was a week ago, so the staff gets credit for that, as well as for confusing rookie quarterback Sam Bradford. Rotating left tackles? We don’t think that one’s going to win Cable Coach of the Year.
Things looked really bleak at halftime, but Gradkowski and the defense turned things around and did just enough to beat arguably the worst team in the league by two points in the home opener. But a win is a win is a win.

OAKLAND, CALIF. • After an inauspicious start that included two sacks in his first five plays, Sam Bradford and the Rams’ offense got to work. Bradford completed nine of 11 passes in the first half for 119 yards, a touchdown and a stellar passer rating of 142.0.
On the ground, Steven Jackson churned out 67 first-half rushing yards on 14 carries for 4.8 yards a carry. It all added up to only a 7-3 halftime lead, but that was much better than what happened in the second half of what deteriorated into a 16-14 loss for the Rams (0-2) against the Oakland Raiders (1-1).
Bradford completed only two of his first 10 passes in the second half. And Jackson managed only 8 yards on five carries after halftime. After dominating time of possession the week before against Arizona, the Rams had the ball for only 7 minutes, 2 seconds (out of 30 minutes) in the second half.
What happened to the offense?
“I don’t know,” coach Steve Spagnuolo said. “We didn’t run the ball as effectively, and I think that changes everything. Now you’re in relatively unmanageable second and third downs, and that’s a pretty fast (Oakland) defense. And all of a sudden that speed gets turned on and that makes it tough.”
Jackson said Oakland came out with only seven men in the box, almost daring the Rams to run the football early.
“The first half, we had some very favorable running formations, things that we were able to take advantage of, that we practiced during the week,” Jackson said.
But the Raiders committed an extra defender to stopping the run in the second half, putting eight men in the box.
“Second half, obviously Oakland made some adjustments,” Jackson said. “And we just couldn’t get things going.”

Regarding the Pain McClain body-slam…..
***
JFB:
first of all, he slammed a guy about the size of Nick Miller. It’s not like he bodyslammed Steven Jackson!
he gave the Rams 15 yards and extra motivation. the very next play was a 20 yard pass to Amendola, clearly unfazed by the slam. the drive ended in a TD and cut our lead to just 2 points
he needs to keep his emotions in check. We had enough stupid penalties yesterday than to have to worry about some rookies bravado

A nice article for KoolKell:
Are NFL Head Coaches Benching Black QBs Faster Than White QBs?
…The point is that many NFL head coaches seem quick to pull their black quarterbacks if they don’t play well and replace them with a white quarterback, and let that white quarterback play out of a bad game.
In the case of Oakland Raiders Head Coach Tom Cable, he surprised everyone by pulling Campbell at halftime, and saying to Bruce Gradkowski “Go and win this game for us.” That public statement was frankly boneheaded, because Coach Cable sent the message to Campbell that he has no real confidence in him, just two games into the season on a new team and in a new system.
Cable should have not just given Campbell the chance to play into the game, but had his coaching staff coach him out of his slump. That’s what they get paid to do, or at least should be able to do. The Raiders won by two points, and Campbell wasn’t doing a bad job: he was 8 of 15 for 87 yards, and threw just one interception in the first half.
In the Rams game Sunday, Bruce Gradkowski was 11 of 22, 50 percent versus 53 percent for Campbell. Bruce had one touchdown, yes, but one interception too. In other words, there was not much difference between Campbell and Gradkowski, yet the Raiders didn’t give Campbell a chance to win the game and Coach Cable throws him under the bus.
Now, because the Raiders won by just two point, there will be an irrational, emotional look at the situation and some will say Bruce should start on the basis of one game. The fact is, no one knows if Campbell could not have rallied the Raiders and himself to win, because they didn’t give him a chance to do so.

Instead I subject myself to the wisdom of the keeper of the list with a few notes.
1) Surely the Keeper of the list would have put me on the no faith list if I had bad mouthed DMAC
2) Keeper of the list is well aware that I am a “fan” of all of the team and while I may join in and make a joke trying to be funny now and then, I very rarely bad mouth any parts of the team. (JC excluded) He really has looked bad in 6 quarters. As a matter of fact I go to the opposite extreme even so far as predicting 56 – 6 wins against top ten teams.
3) Keeper of the list and myself do not say much to one another out of respect or maybe just because we are wise enough to not engage each other in useless banter. All that being true, I admit I did not go out of my way to get on “your” list. I also admit to being little immature as well as having many other faults.

Defensive adjustments: The Rams’ Steven Jackson was on pace for 220 yards rushing after the first quarter. Then, nothing.
“The first half, we had some favorable running formations,” Jackson said. “They went in and made some adjustments … and were able to establish themselves in the second half.”
Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha said it’s like a puzzle.
“The thing with us is, when we figure it out with the run game, it’s over,” he said. “We can fix it. It’s just a matter of us figuring it out, sooner than later. So moving forward, that’s a place where we can improve.”

Maybe Cable wanted Gradkowski all along.
Wasn’t Gradkowski’s chest injury during OTAs before the draft?
And nobody knew exactly how he would respond to rehab for knees.
Maybe Al pulled the trigger on Campbell not knowing if Gradkowski would be able to perform?
Who knows?
I am a Campbell supporter but you have to go with the hot hand. Clearly that belongs to Doc B.
September 20th, 2010 at 8:19 am
While Oakland players didn’t want to give Bruce Gradkowski too much credit (because for all they know Jason Campbell could still be the starting quarterback), Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo said, “(Gradkowski) was a good move by their coaches. Good move. He’s obviously a mobile guy and he executed the offense pretty good. They came out obviously with the intent to throw the football. They did a nice job.”

Together, DHB and Louis Murphy combined for 12 catches for 171 yards in the win.
“I felt like those two guys really grew today,” coach Tom Cable said. “We went to ‘em a number of times and they answered. I just think that’s part of that confidence and that growth that you get, and hopefully we’ll just continue to ascend and we’ll get more out of them as we go.”
On a 33-yard catch in the third quarter, Heyward-Bey caught a short hitch and made one defender miss before outrunning two more down the sideline.
“The second half, we went out and played like the way we’ve been playing in practice,” Heyward-Bey said. “Just trying to make routine catches and make the big plays when they were there. … Me and Louis came to play. We talked about that we need to make plays for the team to win. It showed today. Next week we got to do it again.”

TT is known for keeping players out for over a year. Then numbnuts lance actually played DMAC the next game with TT. WE are lucky we did not lose DMAC forever. Raiders notes: Special hits get Raiders, fans fired up
Christopher Chung / Press Democrat Raiders linebacker Quentin Groves levels St. Louis Rams kickoff returner Mardy Gilyard during their game in Oakland on Sunday.
As much energy as Bruce Gradkowski brought to the Raiders on Sunday, as much pride as the defense took in shutting down Steven Jackson, it was special teams that really got the crowd pumped.
Three big hits in the second half had the Coliseum rocking, including a pair in the fourth quarter — Michael Huff lying in wait for the Rams’ Mardy Gilyard and dumping him on a kickoff, and Stevie Brown clubbing Danny Amendola on a punt.
But the whopper was the creation of Quentin Groves, who raced downfield on a third-quarter kickoff and obliterated Gilyard at the 17-yard line. The Raiders had just grabbed their first lead at 13-7, and when Gilyard got up wobbly the crowd went crazy. It got even crazier when they showed replays on the big board.
“It fires everybody up,” coach Tom Cable said. “A couple of those hits now, it’s like a train hit somebody. That was big time. Again, I think that the message this week was how hard are you willing to play to succeed, and I think that was just another example of those things we’re trying to get done.”
Groves’ teammates were effusive. Wide receiver Louis Murphy said, “It amps me up.”
Grove acknowledged that his hit sparked the crowd, but he didn’t get a good look at it. He was engaged with a blocker when he ran into Gilyard, and was too busy high-fiving the other cover men to catch the initial replay.
“I seen the guard try to block me, so I pressed the guard,” Groves said. “And I seen the returner, said, ‘Oh, I gotta take a shot.’ So I took the shot.”
The paid attendance of 48,396 was lowest for a Raiders home opener since Sept. 13, 1998, when 40,545 showed up to watch the Chiefs.

Reading these postings , we are a team who hasnt done anything yet. DMC has run on two teams and one was the rams. I myself just cant get so overly excited . We almost lost that game and all I could think about when grads threw that int was this post because Id rather be wrong that right. Its all about the raiders returning to greatness and beating badly the top 10 teams. Thank god for the flags that saved us. What would we all be saying if it wasnt for those flags that kept the clock going. Maybe I am wrong about jason but I cant shake that bruce might not be anything but a short ball thrower and once teams game plan for him as a starter and start daring him to go over the cover 2 coverage what will we all be saying then. There is a bigger picture and its the raiders returning to greatness . The reason bruce worked so well is the team went to slants and short ball less drop backs. The raiders have a a problem and thats will they continue to try to be what AL davis and teh raiders have always been . RUN HARD AND PLAY ACTION for deep ball. Wi ll we change our way of playing because of lack of offensive line . Notice the giants how they have played over the last several years. Its OUR philosphy. HArd run deep play action pass . They have the offensive line to protect there qb. We ll all see how it will play out as the real teams come out. Id rather be wrong and appolgize to all the bruce and DMC guys on here.

I was called nuts by a lot of people, but soon enough everyone else seeing Russell continue his free-fall started to see that was very possible.
Then when Bruce and then Frye got starts, it was proven.
So im the original Bruce Gradkowski fanboi.
However…It’s always easier being the back-up. When Bruce is full-time starter, and DC’s are breaking him down, he’ll struggle in games. He’s a little fighter, and best option right now. But we still need a) fix the OL before all else, b) learn from the John Henderson impact and ensure we draft a young up-coming monster run-stuffing NT, c) need a young QB to develop into a franchise QB.
September 20th, 2010 at 8:47 am
Gradkowski, Baby! Over 400 yards of offense for the first time in ages, 5 passes each to Murphy and DHB, handling the pressure with well timed passes and knowing exactly where he wants to go with the ball.
What’s not to like? Why isn’t this guy starting? His only downfall is his height, as evidenced by the pass over the middle that was tipped and picked.
Oh, and props to you Dakota. Again, pleasantly surprised with DMAC. I am happy to eat crow on that one. Just as long as the Gradkowski haters line up for their serving as well.
“Gotta love the Gradkowski guys!”
September 20th, 2010 at 8:48 am
Yup, I’m with you guys that Branch is way overrated and getting victimized 2 weeks in a row. He gave up both TD’s yesterday.
September 20th, 2010 at 8:49 am
Oh, and J Hill, you were absolutely right to call me on my statement that there was no drop off from Campbell to Gradkowski. “NONE”. Because I was wrong. You see, Gradkowski is MUCH BETTER than Campbell. LOL
September 20th, 2010 at 8:49 am
Why worry about SS when our offense can’t score, our OL can’t block, and our QB is killing the team, and you want to worry about our SS situation?!
——————————————————-
The offesive issues are solved by starting Gradowski.
Let me ask you a simple question bruh …
Why was the Forte run against us in the pre season such a big deal to you?

C’mon guys. Pittsburg gamed plan against him last year and he just went over the top for 3 td’s in the 4th qtr. The thing I like about bruce is he aint afraid to put the ball up for a jump ball. Our receivers are bigger and he throws it before the db can turn around. Look at the TD and that final first down. He threw up soft balls and the db couldnt do anything about it.

Well now, what do we have here. The list of doubters and the faith.
Let’s see how these doubters sound, with their comments today.
Throw out the argument that it was one game, throw out the argument it was the Rams, Tenn,(had over 100 all purpose yds against Tenn) and on a crappy field in Oakland, dirt that is not even favorable for any angus cows, or you couldn’t grow any thing on that field, DMAC has just begun.

When Ford was in on two occasions in the first half, he beat his man on a post and fly pattern, the ball never arrived, as JC had no time to throw, Ford is clearing out the safety for the underneath pass, they are working him in slowly, be patient.

September 20th, 2010 at 9:02 am
You know I just have to point out that 3rd and 7 with 3 minutes left in the game and the offense badly needing a first down to keep the Rams O off the field. There was a blitz up the middle where the guy came through untouched. Grads knew exactly where he wanted to go (out to Murphy) and exactly where he needed to place it BEFORE the receiver made his cut. It was right on target and we get the first down. Then DMAC moved the chains one more time to seal the victory.
You know it’s interesting, some folks said “well Manning and Brees couldn’t do anything with this line”. Grads just showed you what a smart effective QB can do even with a bad Oline. And when the defense blitzes, you make them pay! Someone is open!

Steven Jackson needs glasses. The Raider Defense had multiple fronts in the second half, and did not have eight in the box on every snap. The biggest reason Jackson was stopped in the second half, was John Henderson with help (gulp) from Kelly.
Watch the rewind of the game.
September 20th, 2010 at 9:03 am
My prediction of a 13-6 Rams victory probably would have been pretty accurate without the halftime insertion of Bruce Gradkowsi. He single-handedly brought this team back from the dead, no denying it. His stats were not great, he isn’t Peyton or Brady, but he does seem to give the WR’s more opportunities to make plays, which frees up Miller for more catches in the middle and less people in the box for McFadden. The whole offense just works with him pulling the trigger (at least for now).
It wasn’t a pretty win, but the total yardage gained by the offense and total yards given up by the defense is pretty impressive. There was a flash there of a team that is better than all the teams of the last 7 years.

J,
Giving up a big pass play is just as bad, but you need to understand that Mark Clayton made a great play. WRs are paid to play too.
When you have a SS covering a WR for a few sec, the WR will find a way to get open unless the DL puts pressure on the QB.
He is not as bad as Cable, Walker, Campbell, and Figurs. Branch is the best SS on the roster. MM and S Brown are there to compete also, so I’m not worried about out S situation anymore!
Huff is playing well, and Branch will improve.
Dude, it’s Branch’s 3 season and he was injured most of his rookie season.
Stop it!!!!
September 20th, 2010 at 9:18 am
I let all you guys debate who said Grads should be starting. This I know, and ask Brien also.
The play of the game, which fired up the fan base, in the Coliseum, and on the Raider bench.
Raiders have first and goal at the 3 yard line. Holding call, brings it to the 13 yard line.
grads goes back to pass, nobody open, tucks the ball up the middle, and gains 6 yards, no slide just goes in hard as he gets smashed big time. Coliseum rocks, bench rocks, Grads is up waiting for the next play, like it’s no big deal. That created more buzz than, anything I’ve seen in a long time.
September 20th, 2010 at 9:18 am
So, the O-line managed to get it done in the run game without Bob Gallery. In fact, with Loper in there it sounds like he wasn’t missed. We need to get Loper in there for Carlisle ASAP, and start working B. Campbell at RT in practices.
The Veldheer/Henderson platoon should probably continute until Veldheer can beat Henderson outright. I would like to see Veldheer sieze the LT job, but I am torn, because I still think they need a real left tackle prospect from the draft next year.
Despite all of the protection issues for this line, I love the new POWER look. If you are wondering why McFadden suddenly looks like a completely different running back, I humbly submit it has everything to do with the power infusion that Hue Jackson brought in. Hopefully the transition will continue with Veldheer and Campbell, then a few more players next season.

Btw…Wimbley is a big-time acquisition this year. He’s been very good for us. Getting pressure on the QB and also doing some nice mopping up.
September 20th, 2010 at 9:20 am
I will say this about black QBs in general.
They have to start going to the lesser knowmn colleges where coaches will teach them the finer points.
Too many of them opt for Big Time U…where few truly great QBs of any race come from…see SEC without the Manning’s.
Quite frankly, all QBs with any talent should be targeting the MAC, Big East, Mountain West or lesser power conference school like Stanford and Vandy.
Who’s the last great QB from Auburn, Alabama or LSU or Florida for that matter?
Also black QBs have to leave their legs at home…REFUSE to run…focus on staying in the pocket and delivering the ball.
That kid Pryor in Ohio State is wasting his time. Not being prepped for anything but a tryout and a desk job.
Most of the great QBs went to mediocre schools with the exception of a few.
I would never draft an SEC or Big 12 QB again. Too much risk

September 20th, 2010 at 9:20 am
Cable wants to save his job, he would:
Start Gradkowski the rest of the season.
With Bush and Run DMC splitting 40 or so carries and lots of play action bootlegs, get the pocket moving get Zack open and now we know that DHB isn’t just a clearout WR, he can actually run routes and make tough catches.
Also, Branch – miscommunications or not – has been a liability when left on an island. His angles have been pretty poor. The second TD wasn’t really on him as much though, just a great catch by Clayton.
Leave him in as a 4th or 5th LB in essence and use some zone blitz concepts.
Because this won’t happen, the coaches need to stay on Branch as they will likely be trying to duplicate what they did yesterday – getting pressure with four guys – on opponents with superior talent.
All in all, it was ugly, but Bruce pulled it out.
I am extremely happy that Cable had the ba11s to bench Campbell after 6 quarters rather than 6 weeks. Best move on his part by far since being promoted.

compare the look in Gradkowski’s eyes to Campbells.
Tells you all you need to know.
I had pretty much written off the season because, as I stated, this team can’t win w/ mediocre Campbell.
I figured 0-4 before they finally make the qb change, barring injury.
Shocked me when Cable stood up to big Al whole installed this mediocrity at qb.
Grads knows how to command and this offense plays better for him.
and I believe the interception was tipped.
Didn’t have to pass much because McFad was terrorizing St Lou.
Cards look abysmal yesterday.

September 20th, 2010 at 9:26 am
The Cards are in shambles right now. Anderson is horrible and even though HT had some yards they can’t score. They won’t be able to throw on us, so the Raiders just need to key HT.
Our D will have their way with them.

September 20th, 2010 at 9:28 am
But as we know with this team…they have to repeat it!
Too many times this team is “satisfied” after a victory and then lays a big face plant the next week.
Someone has to bring the reality that they are still very much a raw team overall…and they better be damned focused on an Arizona team that is at least well-coached and has some weapons.
They should attack Anderson from start…and focus on run stoppage….put Nnamdi on Fitzgerald and move
September 20th, 2010 at 9:28 am

“compare the look in Gradkowski’s eyes to Campbells.
Tells you all you need to know.”
I encourage you and everyone to not just read or listen to, but watch the Gradkowski postgame interview if you haven’t already.
He’s talking right to Al Davis.
I wish I had the clip right in front of me, but he says something to the effect of….
“I think I am, but that’s up to Cable, the coaches, and whoever else makes those decisions,”
With an emphasis on the ‘whoever,’ when asked if he’s the starting QB.
And looking at him when he said it like ‘what else do I gotta show you, old man?’

September 20th, 2010 at 9:31 am
I was also the first to push for Colt Brennan that draft year. I remember posting a thread on RF.net about how the Raiders should trade Russell that very year they drafted him, acquire some OL and trade for Brennan. Everyone laughed. I reckon if we traded Campbell this season we could re-sign Brennan and try to develop him. Hes like a Gradkowski, he has spunk, makes things happen, takes shots downfield doesnt check down and has great touch/accuracy.
But i know there’s plenty of Hawaii’n raider fans who also love Brennan for a long time and think he could be good too.
September 20th, 2010 at 9:31 am
And there you go! Good post man. Campbell would have taken a but slide well short of the sticks! Chump.
——————————————————
Would’ve never even called that play for campbell.
The pregame was talking about how they already had to simplify the playbook for the guy.
September 20th, 2010 at 9:31 am
Jhiill do what ya gotta do bruh…..them youngins come always first. I respect that
September 20th, 2010 at 9:31 am
The Toledo Rocket was in full effect yesterday. I still like Jason Campbell, but it is clear as day, that Gradkowski has better timing with the WR’s which has been a major missing cog in the O, for many years.
I think Cable will continue to play dumb about the QB situation all week, it will at least give the Cardinals extra tape to watch, and provide a very slight competitive edge for the Raiders. Although, if I were the Cardinals I wouldnt even bother game-planning for Campbell, he has beat himself just fine with the Raiders, he doesnt need help from a defense.
September 20th, 2010 at 9:32 am

September 20th, 2010 at 9:32 am
Some of you guys, need to stop comparing Grads and JC, as who is better.( arm, height, etc..)
My point is this, if you watch the game, first half, then the second half, you see one big stark difference.
The big difference is, Grads makes his reads faster, JC is slower with his reads. Grads goes one, two three, as he scans the field, where JC seems only to find and scan one, two, by that time pressure is around him, and he rushed his throw and bad things happen.
Grads is so quick, with his reads, for example.
The throw to Murphy over the middle, his first check was Miller, then to DHB, and then he saw Murphy break open , and he anticipated the spot and threw the ball before, Murphy got there, that’s a big difference in a QB, who trust his WR, and one who waits for something to happen.
September 20th, 2010 at 9:34 am
Grad has done nothing but make our WRs look legit. Murphy, JLH, and now even DHB.
But, to his credit, DHB looked good yesterday. Hungry. One strange-looking attempt at a catch.
He still needs to be more fluid, but he’s at least looking very aggressive.
September 20th, 2010 at 9:34 am
Griese, Henne, Grbac, Todd Collins…
——————————————————
Great QBs was the topic mayne!
September 20th, 2010 at 9:34 am
If people are gonna use 2009’s stat lines to show how Crabtree was better than DHB, then as of right now, 2010, it’s true…
DHB > Crabtree
And i have faith that’ll keep proving itself. Crabtree aint got the right attitude, fritter his talents being a JR type whilst a humble guy like DHB’s work ethics and hunger for validation will see him overcome whatever talent he might lack. Been plenty of those types in the NFL.

-Mcfadden will have another solid game
-The Raiders have 5 sacks as a team (2 by Wimbley)
-DHB finaly gets a nice deep pass thrown his way, and he catches it.
-Steven Jax, held under 100 yards
-Stan Routt has an int
-Jason Campbell stays off the ground and gives up on awkward sliding.
-The black hole smothers Zach Miller after he catches a TD in the 1st quarter
-Howie Long’s son admits he secretly wants to play for the Raiders.
Print that! lol
Raiders win 17-10

With DMAC tearing it up in his first decent opportunity. I dont see them rushing to bring Bush back. Let him heal up really good. He should provide a great spark to the redzone offense when he gets back though. Two back sets, with him and McFadden, will give defenses alot to think about. One can pound, one can fly, both have soft hands. I look forward to that, but not too soon.
September 20th, 2010 at 9:45 am
V.Davis is a man, da man, and a leader. He’ll dominate receiving stats tonight, and the Saints will crush them too, something like 38-7. Divatree will have a cry or two during the game and at most get something like 4 recs 40 yards.

OL is a different issue! Period!
You can’t alternate your LTs, switch players to diff positions (LT to C to LT again), and think changing a QB is going to make a huge difference. It’s not!
We still have the same OL, we still have problems at C, RG, RT, and LT.
The Rams suck, and their DL is sorry. We still have problems with our OL, and switching QBs will help (Bruce > JC), but our offense will not improve unless we fix the OL.

That was a hogswash penalty on McClain when he threw the player to the ground. I have seen defensive players slam Mcfadden to the ground many times without a penality. The Raiders need to get to bottom of that type for call to make sure it is called accordingly.
Mcfadden ran like a beast yesterday. With Grad. at the helm I see a balance Raider attack on offense. Cable, great change up!!! Keep the your eye on prize and don’t let Veldheer fall on complacency.Press the young talents to develop readily like we see so often on the competitive teams of the NFL
The Raiders won the one they were suppose to win. Now lets see the Raiders win one in which they are not favored to win.

Anyone watch the free replay yet? DON’T! it’s a mirage!! THIS DOES NOT WORK!!! What frustrates me more is how the NFL continues to marginalize their fans, especially in this tough economic time. Must be nice to have an entertainment monopoly. Just show the daamn games on TV!!!! What does it really hurt? I need to spend $80 just to get a top row end zone ticket plus $33 for parking to watch my team play. That’s just for me, not my family. Were talking nearly $300 to take my family to a game and that’s the price before drinks and food. Too rich for my blood. Ridiculous! 48,500 people there this weekend and it’s still not good enough. Lost in all the talk about the QB was the run defense in the 2nd half. Put the big man John Henderson in there make some adjustments and suddenly you are forcing 3 and outs…forcing a QB like Bradford to beat you with his arm.
That’s Raider football until they can get this offense straightened out…by straightened out I mean 21+ points a game.
Soooooo, next week its Beanie Wells and the Hightower guy with a QB named Anderson. I think a whole plate full of 8 man fronts and big guys up the middle are in store. Let Nnamdi shadow Fitzgerald and force Anderson to beat you.
September 20th, 2010 at 10:07 am
Dakota,
I’m not a huge fan of Bruce, but I do like 3 things about him:
1- he is motivated, and the team respects him and play harder got him.
2- He gets the WRs involved, and he us not scared to take chances.
3- as Dell said, he reads and reacts fast enough to make plays with his arm or legs.
We need to give him a chance. He also looks better than last season. He played well.

Garbagekowski isn’t even worth wasting breath on. He might be the best of our schytty QBs, but that doesn’t count for much in my book.

I don’t think anyone’s on the bandwagon, Dakota, but this is certainly cause for the homers to think we’ve turned the corner. Week 2 wins often do have that effect, with any team’s fan base. Just the nature of a sports fan. I’m just glad to see we’re using more of Kiffin’s playbook, and a QB that Gruden drafted. Who would have thought, that even nearly a decade after he’s gone, Gruden’s still helping us win.
September 20th, 2010 at 10:12 am
Dakota,
Gradkowski is the best option on this team for now. And right now I will take it.
Campbell is definitely not the guy. Offense just looks lethargic with him out there and nothing happens.
Let’s get an answer once and for all with this gradkowski kid.
Can he do it over 15 games with opposing DCs disecting his every strength and weakness?
Is he the next Shaun Hill/JT O’Sullivan or the next Jake Delhomme (in his prime)….that’s what we will find out.
September 20th, 2010 at 10:12 am
So with this win is everyone back on the Raiders bandwagon?
——————————————————
I think the QB change gets me back on the bandwagon. It will at least carry me through the Az victory, which will be a nice transition the the LAKERS !!!!!!

I would be happy with 8. But realistically between 2-6 if certain issues are not addressed. You happy?
You seem like a negative person that likes to antagonize people. But whatever helps you sleep at night.
September 20th, 2010 at 10:13 am
I won’t be on any bandwagon until we win 3 straight or cross the 5 win mark, two things I don’t think will ever happen as long as Al’s here. But that’s what it would take, nonetheless.
September 20th, 2010 at 10:13 am
this is the NFL. we’re 1-1
tied with the Chargers, Broncos and that team that whipped us by 25 points last week!
time to quit looking in the rearview. we’re still in this thing, no matter how good or bad we’ve looked the first 2 games
September 20th, 2010 at 10:14 am
I’m not a huge fan of Bruce, but I do like 3 things about him:
1- he is motivated, and the team respects him and play harder got him.
2- He gets the WRs involved, and he us not scared to take chances.
3- as Dell said, he reads and reacts fast enough to make plays with his arm or legs.
——————————————————
This is excellent analysis!
It’s hard to not be a Bruce fan now man. Call it desperation or what, the thing I like about him is he CLEARLY believes in himself!

Dmac was in there yesterday in the first half and in Tenn but he was not the diff maker in those qtrs. BG shows up and whole team is completely diff.
Dont you think you are overlooking those facts?
===============================================
I agree. Come on, Dakota. Some of doubters have alread come in here and given props to DMAC. You’re still calling Grads, Garbagekowski? Dude!? If not for “Garbagekowski”, we’d all be doom and gloom in here right now talking about another lost season. Give it up, Dakota.
September 20th, 2010 at 10:15 am
Gradkowski is a “Leader of Men”, while Campbell is just another guy that needs to stand on the sideline and learn for now. I noticed that on the 2nd series that Grads was starting, when the defense was on the field, you could see Hue, Grads, and Boller huddled up and going over strategy and Campbell was off in the distance alone in his thoughts.
My concern for Rolando McClain is that he so badly wants to develop a Raider persona, in doing that suplex of Amendola, that it temporarily fired up the Rams and made the game closer than it needed to be. He needs to learn restraint and his immaturity could have cost the Raiders dearly. It fired up the local yay-whoos, but it needs to be talked about with the coaching staff in a private a$$-chewing session.

Garbagekowski energized the team yesterday. And last year the team played better with him than with Russell.
But come on…50% passing isn’t going to get wins on a regular basis. Sorry.

What cracks me up is all of these blackout rules the NFL has, and how they treat it like it’s national security or something. I went to click on one of those highlight shows on NFL on Demand on comcast, and it said, “due to regulations, blah blah,”, they couldn’t show it on monday because a game was being played…whatever. This stuff really sold when the economy was good. But now that it’s bad, I think the NFL is really starting to lose people. IT just seems absurd. These guys have all the money in the world, and they’re just dangling their product above the heads of the fans who’ve helped make the game what it is, like hanging a chunk of meat over a dog, making it jump to get it. It’s no way to treat people.

50% passing when you take shots down the field is hell better than 65% on a bunch of 4 yard checkdowns. The 22/33/150/0 games don’t bring wins.
The 15/30/300/3 games bring wins.
passing % is overrated
September 20th, 2010 at 10:19 am
J-Camp is far from the worst QB I have ever seen.
It seemed to me that he was generally trying to get the ball down field more this week, even forcing it into coverage and getting picked. I think he is a good athlete, and puts in the work that Russletussin did not, and showed some improvement in his second start. However, he obviously is slow to make decisions, which causes him to be completely ineffective behind our porous Offensive Line.
Grads should be the undisputed started at this point, not only because of his ability to get the ball to our recievers, but because the ENTIRE TEAM – off., def., and STs – rallies behind him and plays better.
In the second half yesterday, I saw the Oline step up, the Running game step up, the Recievers stepped up, The D-line stepped up, Routt, stepped up, and even special teams.
The question is: Why doesn’t our team play like that when Grads isn’t in there? I can’t blame just Campbell when the entire team plays flat – Why don’t our guys play at 100% all the time?!
Keep Grads in there until it stops working. People complain he has a week arm, but he was zipping the ball pretty good, even bouncing one off of #80s chest. He just needs to learn the Garcia method of the “jump-pass” so it doesn’t get tipped at the line. Sorry J-Camp, it ain’t you, we gotta’ do whats best for the team.
Make it so Al! It’s not too late for you to back Grads in a way that still saves face. Just say J-Camp needs more preparation and we’ll move on – the fans will still respect you as long as we are winning!
September 20th, 2010 at 10:19 am

Just Fire, I like Gradkowski’s style. Mobile, quick thrower, makes good decisions. Thank you Jon Gruden for drafting this guy and sending him to us. 8 years after he’s gone, Gruden’s still building winners in Oakland!
September 20th, 2010 at 10:20 am
Campbell completed eight of 15 passes for 87 yards and threw one interception, no touchdowns, and led the Raiders to three points for the entire first half.
When you realize that Campbell was playing against the St. Louis Rams, then you know he was pretty bad.

Sorry guys, I try and think long-term when it comes to the Raiders. That is why I have been on Cable’s case since day one. We are not going anywhere with a guy like that as our HC.
And the same applies to Garbagekowski. We’ll always be a sub .500 team with him at QB. No doubt about it.
To settle for Garbagekowski is to settle for losing. Same applies to Tom Cable.
We have to get a decent QB and a legit HC (and a new o-line) before we can seriously think about being contenders.

We played the Rams…50% passing might get it done against the Rams, and maybe even Arizona, but not against most other teams.
And our run D looked okay when we didn’t have to account for the other teams QB. That was how most teams approached us for the past couple of seasons.
In week one our defense made Vince Young look like super man, and in week two the Steelers defense put Young back on the bench….I think our D has a long ways to go.
Beyond McFadden, I am not very encouraged about this season based on the first two games…but when it comes to the Raiders I have been a cup half empty sort for the past 18 seasons or so…
September 20th, 2010 at 10:32 am

=================================================
How did the team play differently? The QB was still pressured in the 2nd half. And DMAC wasn’t bad in the first half.
The difference was a QB that could get the ball to his receivers, DOWNFIELD. That opens up the running game as the D has to respect the pass. When you have a check down QB that can’t find his receivers, holds on to the ball, checks down a lot, and folds in pressure, just stick more guys in the box and blitz the sh1t out of him. Simple.
You guys act like the QB has nothing to do with how the rest of the team plays. It’s all connected, homies.

you don’t think he could survive behind this O-Line, either?
JCamp is not awful or terrible. He’s not JaMarcus or Aaron Brooks. He’s Jason Campbell and he is what we thought he was. An average NFL QB that nobody else wanted for even a 5th rounder on draft day. Shanny snookered a 2012 4th rounder out of Al Davis instead.
Campbell was never going to be the savior of this franchise. If you watched him play in Washington and thought that, you need serious help.
Bruce Gradkowski is a scrappy guy with tons of leadership. Jeff Garcia 2.0 – he might get us to 8-8, but then it’s too late to grab even a decent QB in the draft in Round 2 (Pats have our 1st rounder)
the Raiders need to run the ball and play good defense. that’ll be the key to winning games this year imo. We don’t have the QB, OL or WR’s to be an elite passing team. we need to limit penalties & turnovers. in other words, quit shooting ourselves in the foot!

True, but he did show he could move the ball, and the score should have been at least 9-7 Raiders at the half (Jano missed one and Cable went for the 4rth down, and couldn’t get the TO to the refs in time) maybe more if DHB had gotten a PI call or two.

So the BIG question is, what do we do with Jason?
Do we trade him? or Do we keep him?
===================================================
Nobody wants him. The Redskins found a sucker and were more than excited to get a 4th for him. We won’t be so lucky.
If it was up to me, Grads starts, Kyle is 2nd banana, and Campbell is the last resort. Draft a QB to groom slowly and stick him in there only once our Oline issues are resolved.
Dakota – Grads isn’t our future? So who is? Jason? LOL! We have to roll with what we have and Bruce actually makes our offense work. You have a young promising QB your gonna pull out of your azz?
September 20th, 2010 at 10:42 am

September 20th, 2010 at 10:43 am
Rockstar,
I don’t think Gradkowski is a durable Quarterback….I don’t. But Campbell was taking this team down with his ineffective play.
Just saw enough to know that I am not willing to risk the season for any one player.
Campbell had all OTA and camp to come out here and execute the offense…He’s got to lead and all that stuff..but most importantly, he needs to get the ball off.
If they are calling streaks all the time…then toss it up and hope for the best..can’t take sacks and fumbles.
Unacceptable and he’s too old for that stuff.
I really think Campbell will be out of the league in a year or two.
Fortunately he got paid. He seems smart and will make good use of the money

But I withdraw that accusation. I give you two the benefit of the doubt that you’re different people. That being said, why are you two always here at the same time, and making the same argument?

Funny schit….
After watching his team blow a 17-point lead Sunday, Redskins CB DeAngelo Hall says from now on he’s going to shadow the opposing team’s best receiver instead of being relegated to the left side of the field.
When asked if defensive coordinator Jim Haslett would be receptive to the change, Hall responded, “It don’t matter what he say. This [is] my team. This [is] my defense.” Hall’s overinflated ego is at it again. Despite the cornerback’s declaration, any changes to the defense will be made by Haslett.

I think they gotta stick with Gradkowski for awhile, to give these WR’s something to do. They weren’t getting any reps with Campbell in the game. Let the offense develop, get Bush back, get Schilens back, work Veldheer in, work Bruce Campbell in, look for some upgrades at center and gaurd, then see what happens. I dont think there is any chance we get a new QB next year, other than some scrubs, so the combination of Boller, Grads and Campbell probably needs to last until 2012 at least.

It was nice to have competent QB play at least for a half of football. I am very confident about our chances at WINNING with Bruce Gradkowski against any team. We have some swagger, and the entire team feels renewed energy from the huddle, the break, the snap count, the play….it seems everyone is just sharper, crisper, on a live wire with Grads as the field general. For seven years of misery, the QB spot has been the achilles heel of this team.
We may only get 8 wins this year, but if we have Grads on the field, it will be someone else responsible for the loss. It may be the defense or the O-Line, may be the running backs, but at least we wont complain about our QB.
I only hope that Grads can stay healthy. Win or lose, it’s a lot more fun watching this team with a LEADER at QB. I could get used to this.

Larry Fitzgerald was spotted with a plastic brace on his left wrist after Sunday’s loss to the Falcons, but said it’s nothing serious.
Fitzgerald added that the wrist issue was related to something he sustained in Week 1. It’s clear he isn’t 100 percent between his knee woes and this tweak, but he’s not in danger of missing any games. Fitzgerald is surely looking forward to the Cardinals’ Week 6 bye, which should give him a chance to get back to full strength.

Guys, I know something that Al could do that would have me on the bandwagon immediately, and have me buying season tickets right now, for the next 5 years. If Al refused to play the game in Arizona out of protest of their new immigration law. What a way for Al to really prove that he’s still a notch above the other NFL owners when it comes to civil rights and race relations.
September 20th, 2010 at 11:09 am

September 20th, 2010 at 11:09 am
Next week’s game is critical. Beating the rams in our house by two points is not a statement that this thing is turning around.
Winning two in a row is a statement
Going 2-1 to start the season is a statement
Getting a win at somebody else’s house is a statement
I think after two very uneven games, against two very different teams, with a lot of personnel shifting and indecision, next week now stands as the barometer for how well this team can perform down the stretch.
September 20th, 2010 at 11:09 am
Al and the rest of us dont want you on the bandwagon,..sorry.

September 20th, 2010 at 11:11 am
OK it sounds like grads did a good job of coming in and making some plays on the offense but if you think that dink and dunk roll out right roll out left dead duck passing is going to get us into the play-offs forget about it. To think that we are going to trade Campbell and Boeller is the back up is insane! Did any of you really watch Boeller in Baltimore? Not a starting QB barely making a second string QB. Campbell is a second string QB on most elite teams as well but the issue he has is he likes to sit in the pocket and throw donw field as well. Grads has more success because he is always moving in the pocket and making a circus throw here or there.
Lets face it are QB situation is not great but our o-line pass protection is just as bad. The WRs may focus more when Grads is in the game but the o-line pass protection still sucks. Along with the change up of the starting lineman every freakin week.
Until we get a real rythm going with the WRs I am not jumping on either bad wagon yet. Plus, who is to say if Campbell was not benched that he would got the rythm going and one the game.

yes, we should look at the long term solution but you know what.
We’ve been embarrassing ourselves for the past 7 years. I’d rather take a scrapping QB that wins for us right now and enjoy my week this week. Let’s get back to 500 first before we start worrying about contending.
The Niners were a playoff team with Garcia. The fans wanted more. They shipped him out of town and havent even reached the playoffs since.
September 20th, 2010 at 11:13 am

How many times does Bruce need to come off the bench and prove that Al Davis’ height-arm strength QB mold is meaningless?
Garbagekowski?
SnB, forget Disney or Bad News Beard or whatever it is you’re babbling about, homie.
You want a guy that the team can get behind at QB. The team is an indirect reflection of the coaching staff (particularly HC) and the QB.
When Campbell’s in- they’re slouches.
When Bruce is in- they play harder simple as that.
How bout we let the best QB on the team play the rest of the season, then re-evaluate. I guarantee you that’s what Cable will do unless he is overriden by Al.
We look like a Mickey Mouse club out there with Campbell, just like we did Russell. We looked much better with Frye until he started throwing picks.
We look GOOD with Grad.
Quit getting hung up on completion percentages and height and whatever else is clogging up your guys’ feminine napkins.
September 20th, 2010 at 11:22 am
I think it’s killing Al that 8 years after Gruden’s gone, he’s still heavily responsible for whatever success we have. He drafted Gradkowski. lol. It’s funnier the more you think about it.
And, what’s up with Campbell? What’s the politics behind that? Cable’s call, or Al’s? This should be interesting, as things always are in Oakland. The big story today is not the win, it’s the benching of Campbell, and the organizational chaos that’s looming.

This says a lot.
My point is primarily with attitude. Grad has it. Gannon had it. Gannon wasn’t a Pro Bowler until he got a chance and a coach who really believed in him.
It’s less about arm strength and prior W-L record and more about what you see on the field.
When Grad is on the field, I see completions being made by WRs. I see comebacks, I see guys getting excited.

Very good point, MR.
Seems like last year, at Cable’s request (and after it was painfully evident on and off the field that he was absolute garbage), Russell got benched.
Campbell seems to me to be overwhelmingly a Davis choice. Height, arm strength, first round pick in search of redemption.
It has Al’s handwriting all over it.
If we’re to believe that it’s true what is said, that Cable has control over who starts, it’s Cable’s call.
Now, if we don;t believe that (and who does?) did Cable get clearance again or did he go rogue?
If Campbell starts Sunday, we’ll know.

The real battle is keeping the public school, period. Gym is just the first thing to get axed, but they’re going after the entire public school system. Has the NFL been there to fight for the public school all along, considering the public school system has been under attack since Reagan took office 30 years ago (really since prop 13 in “liberal” California, in the ’70s)? I just wish more athletes would use their star power to fight for more social causes that didn’t have to do with sports. It takes P.E. class facing a threat of extinction to get the NFL involved with child education?

Al took a step forward in getting rid of Russell and a step back trading for Campbell.
Why was everyone applauding this decision. My buddy, a Redskin fan, said look forward to 60+ completion percentage (a favorite stat it seems) and a bunch of Ls. The guy has no vision. He constantly checks down before scanning the field. When he does go deep, he’s locked in to one guy.
There’s a reason Shanarat got rid of him for chump change.

Dink and dunk? lol…Are you sure you don’t have JC and Grads mixed up? If anything, JC is captain check down, King of the 5 yard dumpoff to the RB/FB. Grads gets the ball to his RECEIVERS. Check the stat line, bud. 10 passes to DHB and Murphy from Grads. 2 from JC.

September 20th, 2010 at 11:33 am
You know Cable is smarter than we think. He has now turned Al’s philosophy on head coaches, that they are there to coach on Sundays only, and put it to good use. So when he says “it’s my job to win games and do it anyway possible” he is telling Al I am doing what you have defined my job to be. Now Al can solidily point a finger at him and blame him for losing and Cable can take it and run with it.

OK it sounds like grads did a good job of coming in and making some plays on the offense but if you think that dink and dunk roll out right roll out left dead duck passing is going to get us into the play-offs forget about it.
=================================================
2 from JC.
Exactly!

I still don’t think Cable is smarter than a fith grader, but he’s smart enough to know who should be field general.
September 20th, 2010 at 11:35 am

September 20th, 2010 at 11:36 am
If Cable wants to give himself a shot at winning more games than last year….then he starts Grads until he plays like crap or makes huge mistakes that costs the team wins. If that happens, then they should go back to Campbell.
Otherwise it is soooooo freakin OBVIOUS that Grads gives the team the best chance to win on game by game basis.
Grads is the starter this team needs NOW and he has proved it time and time again.

Even if Grads turns out to be garbage, he’s the best QB on the roster. Roll with him for the season, see what happens, then reevaluate.
The Campbell move was possibly more retarded than sticking with Russell because Jason had years of tape that came with him showing he sucked.

Whats up fellas…..not a spectacular win, but we’ll take it…..
Run D looked solid all game though. Surprisingly so too, with Seymour out. Glad big John got to get his hands muddy out there. Good to send that message that the front 7 has vastly improved too. Hopefully, McClain will make more plays to get the crowd rowdy without drawing the flag (if we lost that game, that play would’ve been criticized immensely for giving that drive momentum).
What the hell is the holdup with Bruce Campbell? Surely there has to be a spot on the line that he can upgrade with his physical prowess. He must be really slow at catching on to the schemes and plays….
Please get us an update on Big Bruce Jerry!……

Exactly, that’s why I said earlier Cable’s best move as HC was benching Campbell after 6 quarters as opposed to 6 weeks.
Down ONLY 7-3, he knew his D was about to give up and we were in for some more Keystone Cops.

people applauded getting J Cambell because Jamarcus was so terrible but i was cool to go with gradkowski i think he deserves a chance look at what he did for us last year and this year, win games and move the offense.
September 20th, 2010 at 11:44 am
Someone might have mentioned this already but picture #16 is McFadden in the Heisman pose. Freakin sweet!
September 20th, 2010 at 11:45 am
Bush got his stitches removed today too fellas…..Can’t wait to see Bush and McFadden out there together and the fake handoffs to Bush, with pitches to the outside to McFadden. We’ll really open things up then….
September 20th, 2010 at 11:45 am
Michael Bush had the stitches removed from his surgically repaired left thumb on Monday morning.
Bush’s status for Week 3 will be a game-time decision, made during warmups. Darren McFadden ranks second in the NFL in rushing (behind only Arian Foster), so he’s probably not going to lose much work when Bush returns. An RB2 sleeper early in the preseason, Bush qualifies now as no more than an RB4.

I don’t think Campbell is a bad player but hes new to this team. Gradkowski has already built a bond with this team. I’m happy to have both of them. Campbell needs to sit and get acclimated to this team but Grads is the hot hand right now and we have to ride the wave for as long as we can. If Campbell sits awhile and our offensive line and players improve over the course of the season and hes forced into the game, I’m sure he’ll look better.

Also…I like Marcel Reese. I think Luke Lawton’s suspension is now over and if the Raiders want to pick him up, they can but I like Reese more…anybody else?

September 20th, 2010 at 11:50 am
some thoughts…
Grads gets the ball out much quicker than JC. Also displayed good zip and accuracy.
YAC was much better yesterday. Great downfield blocking by the WR’s.
Loper is solid and steady. Satelle had is best game in a while.
What happened to Greg Meyers? He caught everything last year.
Thought Nmandi was going to cover the other teams #1?
They should have left him on Clayton all game long.
This team has a lot of fight in it, when grads is in at least.

……………..
Which beckons the question I’ve been asking since Russell was cut. Why hasn’t Gradkowski been named the starter? Gradkowski has been the best QB on this team since he’s been here, yet it’s understandable that a number one overall draft choice is going to be given the largest window possible to turn things around. Now that Russell’s gone, there’s no excuse for Gradkowski to not start. When Al said he could still be heavily involved, he wasn’t joking. He meant heavily. Right up to starting QB.
September 20th, 2010 at 11:54 am
You know he will 24! That’s the exciting part. He’s gonna be at the top of his game, and McFadden finally is too. We’ll finally get to see the offense we’ve been dreaming about for awhile now…… I know I’ve posted this up here millions of times, so make this a million and 1, but being a Louisville, KY boy originally, I got to see Bush play in the greatest high school football game ever. Dude was a QB going against Brian Brohm in the old Cardinal Stadium, and these mickeyfickeys went at it hard. Bush threw for over 450 yds and 6 tds, and ran for over a 100 in that game….Even though they lost by 3 in that game, everyone back at home knew then, that this guy was one of the greatest athletes to come from the city since Muhammad Ali….

He would have kept playing QB at Univ. of Louisville, but they were so high on Brohm that they tried Bush out at DB and RB his freshman year ’cause they wanted him on the field and not sitting, and wound up keeping him at RB after seeing the damage he can do with his legs. Veldheer & McClain both still have a LONG ways to go imo
He slammed a guy about the size of Nick Miller.

You’re on the blog more than I, that’s why I suggested you.

Alex Smith throws 3 more picks and they are calling for his head in SF. SF proceeds to trade us a 3rd rd pick for Campbell
***
BCZ: nice pipe dream bro
Smith will have a pick or two, but keep his job and get Divatree & Davis going late in the game (garbage minutes)

What about getting fired on your day off?
September 20th, 2010 at 12:24 pm
Dell,
PLay started out with just Clayton on the right side in front of Routt. The slot guy motioned to the right side and Clayotn, Slot guy, and Jackson all released into their patterns. Slot guy ran a 2yd delayed out, Routt picked him up. Wimbley picked up Jackson coming out of the backfield. Clayton ran right past Branch.
Did he really expect McClain to get back to defend that play?

Didn’t see much of McClain besides that bodyslam, which I know got the crowd & defense fired up … while the Rams marched down for a TD!
Veldheer & McClain both still have a LONG ways to go imo
He slammed a guy about the size of Nick Miller.
We had enough stupid penalties yesterday than to have to worry about some rookies bravado
ever watched SAVED BY THE BELL?
this is basically like Slater punching Skreetch in the face. not a major accomplishment
——————————————
In ROMAC Defense, he did lead the team in tackles, and his penalty was the best penalty i’ve seen in a raider game in a long time. It wasn’t a mental error, it was a statement penalty and it got the D and the crown pumped. Even though a touchdown came on the drive, i dont blame that penalty at all. Fact is, the guy was still on his feet and the whistle hadnt been blown. He man’d up on him and i was pumped no doubt.

Al should hire Tom FLores as the new coach.

Its the NFL. What league do you watch? A win is a win, especially for a team like us coming off a blowout loss. If Grads plays 4 quarters, the gap would have been more than 2 points IMO

This is great, I love this.
Do you really expect Branch to cover Clayton over Routt.
We are not there, was Routt to follow Clayton and Branch take the out pattern, since Branch is the safety and looks to tackle first. Or did Routt communicate to Branch to take his man.
I saw exactly, what I told you in my comments this morning.

September 20th, 2010 at 12:31 pm
Cable stays. the players seem to like him.
September 20th, 2010 at 12:33 pm
In a cover 2 the LB’s responsibility is short dumps or screens in the flat, Corner responsibility is intermediate and safety is deep. I think the issue is the caught us in a base 3-4 looking to stop a short/intermediate throw and they threw it to an obvious hole in the zone. Make no mistake is was a spectacular catch by Clayton.
September 20th, 2010 at 12:33 pm
Gallery cant remain healthy long enough to be considered a tangible starter anywhere on the line.

Jhill and I are dissecting, the first TD pass to Clayton. He is getting frustrated with Branch and sometimes, a call is missed, and we are going over who, is at fault on that particular play.
September 20th, 2010 at 12:36 pm
yeah the billboard was put up for al, he still is here why do we want another coach who won’t do anything under al, we need a gm and a good coach but al needs to step aside
September 20th, 2010 at 12:36 pm
Im of the opinion that if Cable was not going to be retained, they should have gotten rid of him, as speculated would happen, back in March. This is his team now for better or worse. Midseason coaching changes NEVER work out for the positive of the team. No one fires their coach and gets better.
September 20th, 2010 at 12:37 pm
Dell,
Is this going in the direction of yours and Os argument over Huff?
Cover 2 defense!
Why would branch go UNDERNEATH Routt to cover the slot guy running a 2 yd out to the flat?
You’re going off memory and I’m looking right at the play with slow mo, rewind, and all that, lol.
Let’s take your point. The coach was talking to who on the Branch on the sidelines, not Routt or McClain, right?

OK but when he is healthy he is our best lineman. He’s much better than Henderson/Barnes/Veldheer. His health isnt the reason he’s at guard.
September 20th, 2010 at 12:37 pm
Oh. Well on the second TD Routt had good coverage, but Clayton made an amazing grab. I guess I would have to watch the first one again to make any judgements on it.

our offensive line sucks. The offensive line should of been fixed 3 years ago by Tom Cable. The worst coach of all time.
September 20th, 2010 at 12:51 pm
What I saw in DMAC was a power back running defenders into the hard dusty Oakland Coliseum infield dirt and get up smiling as the defenders gingerly got up and dusted themselves off.
30 rushes, 20 second half rushes. You won’t see many nancy’s do that, at 5.4 per carry.
Bush can go ahead and do his rehab through October. He needs to be nice and healed up. Let’s ride this horse for all he’s worth.
September 20th, 2010 at 1:02 pm
If Grad’s can keep moving the ball down the field and put TD’s on the board we should be in good shape(obvious) but converting 3rd downs at a 55-65% rate the raiders will win next week.
September 20th, 2010 at 1:07 pm
Run Defense:
Raiders are 29th, we have gone against C. Johnson (he and & AP the two best) and S. Jackson, minus CJ’s one big 74 yd run raiders are 14th in run D
next 3 weeks we are up against Hightower/Wells (has been & never was), Foster (one hit wonder), and Matthews so far a rookie bust.
Raiders D will improve vastly,
Raiders have not had big early leads to force opponents to throw more than run until late vs the Rams.
September 20th, 2010 at 1:10 pm
Mr. Routt gets another interception against the Cardinals teams will start throwing against Mr. Asomugha.
September 20th, 2010 at 1:13 pm
espn & nfl networks sucks & bites
Their Raider highlights have yet to show Mr. Groves’ or Mr. Browns’ special teams hit, all they show was the roughing the passer play by the Rams that was on 2nd down and the Raiders still had the lead, so even w/o that penalty, Raiders were going to win that game anyway.

Nope….his alligator arms will cause him to swing and miss and his footwork is not good enough to compensate for his lack or arm length at the LT position.
I personally think Barnes needs to start at LT and Jared at RT.
