I’ll tell you the tell tale play of the game for me…
The protection broke down, (either Veldheer or Henderson), and the Rams Defensive end was bearing down on Gradkowski from his blind side.
Grads sensed the pressure coming, scrambled away from the defender, eluded the tackle and threw the ball away, instead of taking the sack.
After I saw that, I was good for the the rest of the game, because we all know Campbell would have taken that sack.
Good QB’s have an internal clock and can sense pressure. Campbell has not proven that he can do that yet. He holds on to the ball entirely too long and cannot sense the pressure coming. That is a trait woefully reminiscent of Jabustus Russell.
///////////////////////////////////////////////////////
This is the problem i have with some of you guys on here. if JC had checked down and got a good 3-4 yds on the play some on here would have complained that he checks down too much and doesnt hang in there when pressured. But if he is waiting for a play to develop on a 5-7 step drop and looking for a receiver, protection breaks down, and he gets sacked then he is holdng the ball too long. Grads had a nice game but i just think after the terrible game we had week 1 us fans were looking for a ray of hope and for our own version of Rudy to get into the game.

the system is new for Bruce also who was injured and missed time.
////////////////////////////////////////////
Thats a has a lot of spin. Bruce hasnt been PLAYING in the system as along but he has been LEARNING the system since HueJack was hired some 200 somethin days ago. He also has the advantage of having almost a year and a half of experience with these players. Murphy and DHB and Run DMC all missed camp time and an oppurtunity to get their timing down with a new QB. Timing that Grads had already established.

Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha had this strange reaction: “The thing is, we might have been down 7-3, it could have been 7-6. So it wasn’t like we were getting killed by the Rams, so I guess that’s why it would be surprising.
“But at the same time, it’s good that the offense didn’t let it mess up what they were doing. They were still able to run the ball, still able to move the ball with Bruce. So as long as it works out, I think everybody’s OK with it.”

Thanks for clarifying that you were talking about me Severe.
However you are comparing apples and oranges.
For the record, I’m NOT one of the guys that would have complained if JC had checked down and gotten 4 yds instead of taking a sack.
Let’s see…I 4 yrd pickup, or a sack. I think we all would agree with the 4 yd pickup.
I’m talking about sensing pressure and either throwing the ball away, or making a quick decisive throw.
What you are talking about has absolutely nothing to do with my post that you pasted here.
September 20th, 2010 at 6:23 pm
I never was a big Campbell fan. I am well aware of his criticism having lived in the DC area for a while. Campbell is a checkdown maestro and he does not have good anticipation; meaning he holds the ball when it should have been released.
I remember film being broke down on him where they clearly showed how the ball is late getting out. The ball was late getting out to Murphy on that INT. It should have been released much earlier in Murphy’s route.
I was not a Bruce G. fan either. I thought of him as a backup. But I cannot sit here and tell you that he does not give the team the best chance to win. He makes things happen out there. He moves the offense noticeably better than Campbell.
And its not that Bruce was here before Campbell. This is a new offense. PERIOD! The only advantage Bruce really has is he’s more familiar with the players – not the offense. They both got about the same time with the offense (considering BG’s injury) and Campbell probably got the most playing time with the 1s.
There is no controversy. Start the player that gives you the best chance to win. Judging from what we see so far that player has go to be Bruce.
September 20th, 2010 at 6:25 pm
Listen the only thing that matters is wins……….period
Wether it’s Grads or JC “just win baby” you guy’s are spending all this time arguing about who starts. Let the coaches coach………..period
September 20th, 2010 at 6:27 pm
Campbell had 6 quarters to throw a TD pass and failed miserably.
Grads came in and threw one within 2 possessions.
Some of you need to take your heads out of the ground and watch the actual game for a change.
Play the players that can get the job done, bottom line.
Gruden drafted Grads. Gruden and Al drafted Gannon. Neither one of them had rocket arms, but they were decisive, elusive, and accurate.
I’ll take that any day over what I saw for the first 6 quarters of our season so far this year.
September 20th, 2010 at 6:27 pm
Let Bruce play …hopefully we get some wins and get some confidence back in this organization. This is bigger than Campbell. We need that more than him at this point. A confident group of players that know they can win and more importantly knows how goes a long way in this league.

Re-read my post and and seriously say we were talking about different things. You were complaining about JC not sensing the pressure, he does. When he senses the pressure he runs (he had a nice first down run sunday) or he gets it to his safety valve.

Gradkowski has a much better repore with these players and that makes a ton of difference. Campbell is trying to establish that. You can see it as he tries to anticipate his throws are inaccurate. That’s call timing. On those deep throws it shows. Whenever a QB has been in as many systems in a short period of time like Campbell it dramatically affects there development. That is not an excuse it’s a definite issue that he has to overcome. You can see it in his processing the play he not sure of himself.

I can concede that …that the timing factor with the WRs is a major issue and something could very well have a leg up on.
However, I can only keep coming back to his criticisms in Washington that I noted earlier. Until he proves he has overcome that (which he has not insofar); I cannot assume that its JUST a timing issue.
They showed re-runs of the plays and BG was releasing the ball even before the WR broke free. Something Campbell just doesn’t do.

I lived in the DC area and trust me they wanted Campbell to be successful and had all the hope in the world. He just never got better per say. Same issues plagued him throughout – holding ball too long, checking down and not attacking, not anticipating.
Part of his issues had to do with the Oline, another had to do with the changes in systems (some which he didn’t fit) but those were the critiques.
Sometimes you get players that you “hope” will some day be great and live up to potential but they never seem to do it. Queue J.Russell; Jeff George, et al.
Lets stop hoping and start winning.

I’m out: Keep Bruce playing until Campbell proves he’s better.
DHB is the man and if he keeps up this kind of progression; he will be one of the better WRs in the League.

My brother lives in Maryland, Silver Springs, and called me about 5 minutes after the trade and told me we got took for a 4th round pick.
I disagreed at the time, but as I started to watch him, read about him, and look at his stats, he was pretty spot on.
Number one complaint was his checkdowns, and that he plays to his competition. Play the Saints?? Looks damn good. Play the Chiefs and Lions??? Lose and get benched.
September 20th, 2010 at 7:03 pm
Let me really stir things up. Next year, Michael Vick is a free agent. He’s not the starter at the Eagles and won’t be. It certainly appears that he’s changed his ways and is now a pass first QB instead of a running QB. I think JCampbell will need minimally one year in our system to learn it and to be able to be productive. Grads is already productive but can he make it through a full season with injuries? Boller is an unknown quantity at this point. The O-line is abysmal but there are some rookies that may help.If we can draft Mike Pouncey, C in the 2nd round next year we may have the nucleus of a decent line with Veldheer & BCampbell coming of age. Conceivably, we could have Veldheer, Gallery, Pouncey, Loper, BCampbell. DMac is now coming of age and hopefully Bush will join him. Our WR’s appear to be maturing and should be very effective by next year. All that leaves is the need for a productive QB. Will AD go after Vick? Maybe he will. That would certainly make things interesting. That would also appear to be an offense that should be able o move the ball & score some points.

I like your ideas and agree, I have no real issues with Campbell YET. But if he doesn’t get it done no biggie we have 3 decent QB’s. He’s not a bad QB he may not be a great one but he’s not bad. Like Cable said we’re going to need them all probably. I would love to get Vick. I also like Boller so I’m not all Campbell has to be it. I’ll take Grads for now no problem until the end of the seaon and see what he has.
If we get the Oline fixed we can do whatever we want because I firmly believe all 3 have a chance if the Oline is good.

EVERY successful Raider team has been built around a DOMINANT Powerful O-line. It all begins at the LOS. Big Uglies DO make the difference. Win the LOS and 99% of the time you win the game.
Right now it appears Grads is the most effective QB primarily because he has adapted to their weakness and has compensated with his feet and quicker releases. He also appears, at the moment, to be the real leader in the huddle. Let’s let him play until he deserves not to play. JCampbell just needs to get more comfortable with our system and to grow in skill sets beyond his current level. He needs to learn how to become the real leader of the gang. Perhaps by watching Grads, he’ll figure it out. He’s not a bad guy, just a new guy figuring things out.
We are so much better off this year at QB. Things ARE getting better. Props to TC for having the balls to pull JCampbell at halftime and make the QB change. It made the difference.

Broncos confirm passing of Kenny McKinley
Posted by Mike Florio on September 20, 2010 9:35 PM ET
The Denver Broncos have issued a statement acknowledging the death of 23-year-old receiver Kenny McKinley.
‘Everyone with the Broncos is shocked and saddened by the loss of Kenny McKinley,” owner Pat Bowlen said in a team-issued release. “He was part of the Broncos’ family and will be greatly missed by our organization. My most heartfelt condolences go out to Kenny’s family and friends.”
Added coach Josh McDaniels, “Kenny had a promising future on the football field, but more importantly, he was a great teammate whose smile and personality could light up the room. This is a tragic loss for our football team, and his family is in all of our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
FOX 31 in Denver has reported that the apparent cause of death was suicide.

Grads helps us win RIGHT NOW. Some people in here seem to have more loyalty for specific players than for the team as a whole.

Don’t think you’ll ever know for sure. I think it was a byproduct of his availability due to the trade for McNabb, our need for a starting QB (now that JaLoser was finally dispatched) & the relatively inexpensive cost (a fourth round pick). Grads & Frye were and are still considered on the fragile side and Boller was a last minute add-on. My guess it was a consensus decision to go after him.
September 20th, 2010 at 7:40 pm
If you want to run a real an NFL team, then Mike Vick is not your guy. The guy is a street baller. Never throws on time or back shoulder passes. He is always waiting for the guy to open first or run with it. They showed one play where he took 8 seconds to get the pass off by running around.

But at the same time, even though I believe that Grads gives us the best chance to win, I feel that it is still a band aid solution to a gun shot wound.
If you think back to the beginning of the millenium and that playoff and Superbowl run that the Raiders had, there are two key components that those teams had that we have not had for the past 7 years.
Those two components are a Probowl caliber Center, and a probowl caliber left tackle. People may not realize it, but Barrett Robbins and Lincoln Kennedy are two huge reasons why Gannon had the success that he had.
Until Al Davis address these issues on our line, all three of our QB’s will continue to struggle.
Our success as a team is directly releted to how long it will take us to acquire, or develop a Very Good Center and Left Tackle.
Like I been saying…Fix the O-Line, Win the Division.
If Al Davis truly has a Commitment to Excellence and just wants to Win Baby, he will do whatever it takes to fix that offensive line, ASAP.

We still have a problem at center. Satele is back-up material at best. If Veldheer is going to be used at LT then he can’t be the center. How about picking up Justin Hartwig, the starting center for the Steelers that was released in favor of Maurike Pouncey. Hartwig would be a definite upgrade from Satele. He’s got 1-2 years left in the tank so if we were able to draft Mike Pouncey next year with our 2nd round pick, he could learn under Hartwig and eventually move in full time at center.

/////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Great post I completely agree on all points.
_______________________________________________________
And this familiaritythat Grads has with his offense allows him to get out of the pocket, sense the pressure and make the right reads in a quick and timely fashion.
The more you talk Severe, the more you just prove my point
////////////////////////////////////////////////////
You sound foolish…..i never said gradkowski couldn’t. WTF are you talking about, the issue is the hypocrisy that you and others show toward JC. If he checks down he’s not doing his job, not letting the play develop and playing scared, if he takes a sack he cant feel the pressure or he is holding the ball too long. Some of you guys are chasing your tails. I never took anything away from Grads, i think JC is a better QB, but right now Grads is the better QB for this team. I can see how one could make a case for either to start.

Face it. Jawalrus II has never gotten it done in his career when given all the opportunities and now you continue to make excuses for him. The only time he won was when he was surrounded by studs like Ronnie Brown and Cadillac at Auburn. You can clearly see that JC is a very slow player. His reads are slow and his windup is a windmill as well. Get over it. Grad is better.
September 20th, 2010 at 9:13 pm
But that doesn’t mean they can’t win with Campbell, yes Grads has better command but he easier to gameplan as well IMO. Campbell can win games it’s not like we’re lost with him in there I think he’ll get better and better week by week.

Priest and Severe, Nobody says Grads is Drew Brees. We just know that he has the intangibles that Jason Campbell does not have as an Oakland Raider. He has “pocket presence.” He doesn’t spike the ball into the dirt when nobody is near him. 99.9% of us will be in disbelief if Campbell takes the opening snap in Arizona!
September 20th, 2010 at 9:16 pm
and no they cannot win with Jawalrus II. Show me where in the NFL someone has proven that they can win with Jawalrus II after all the opportunities given to him.
September 20th, 2010 at 9:20 pm
Aig, Keep it clean. No reason to call Jason Campbell names. He’s much more than the QB “whose name shall not be mentioned.”
September 20th, 2010 at 9:21 pm
Grads does seem to have the Gannon-like leadership & take-charge ability. He’s able to motivate the players to get the most out of them.
JCampbell doesn’t give off the same vibes.
I agree that JCampbell seems to take a little more time in making the reads but that may simply be his newness relationship with the WR’s. Grads had the benefit of playing & practicing with most of them last year and that would make a difference.
I think the biggest difference I see is that JC goes into the huddle and is one of the guys. Grads goes into the huddle and IS the guy. Leadership command & control makes all the difference.
September 20th, 2010 at 9:23 pm
Beach,
I hear you. My take on Jason is he is just a hard working version of Russell. That is why I call him Jawalrus II. I respect that he works hard but he plays just like Russell. Slow to read and long delivery motion. Zero fire and way too quiet for a leader. Brees, Manning’s, Brady, Ryan and all the good QB’s in this league are in your face high intensity guys. JC is not one of them. He is overrated and has been afforded many opportunities to get it done.
September 20th, 2010 at 9:24 pm
JB,
Grad ran a draw up the middle, got blasted, and got up firing up his teammates. You and I know the D feeds off of that.
September 20th, 2010 at 9:25 pm
Here has to be Cables’ decission:
HHHmmmmmmmmmm. The line will break down. I can’t fix it overnight, heck no, not even in the next week or to.
Since we’ll fail at protecting our QB, who gives us the best chance to run a busted play?
No brainer. Now I just pray he doesn’t get hurt.
September 20th, 2010 at 9:27 pm
All I know is…..That if Grads does’nt take over in the second half….we would have more than likely lost that game!!! As sure as I could be!!
September 20th, 2010 at 9:30 pm
Absolutely right Raider Dee. There was no fire and no momentum with JC in there. Just look at the WR’s production.
September 20th, 2010 at 9:30 pm
One comment that disturbs me about those that want to give Campbell a chance say he needs “more time.” The fact is that we can’t afford it. We need to win NOW and not let another season go in the tank! He was given the job in May and now we are in late September. That shows a poor job of getting prepared for the regular season.

Are you slow….we hired Hue in January and acquired Jason in late April. Do you not think that Grads got a playbook way before JC, like a few weeks after Hue was hired??? JC has played moe in this system but Grads was learning the system way before jason. Furthermore, the chemistry that Grads has built with these guys can not be under estimated. For this reason i think that Grads has a better feel for what this team needs in a game. Oly way for Jason to acquire that same knowledge is through gameplay which is why I could see him starting next week. if he stinks we bring Grads back in at the half and he starts week 4 at home.

I wonder if Cable got an earful from Al after the game, regarding who’s starting, which is Al’s MO.
If so, and Campbell does start, and sucks, and stays in..won’t be hard to figure out why…just like it wasn’t hard to figure out who told Cable “mum’s the word” regarding injuries….all part of Al’s control freak mode.

As part of al davis inner circle i can tell you that your getting all worked up about gradkowski being the starter ,jason campbell is the starter and soon gradkowski will not be a distraction cause he will be traded too the ny giants for brandon jacobs.so we are looking at j campbell backed up by kyle boller backed up by charlie frye and gradkowski backing up eli manning.

I’m a fan of the Raiders more than of certain players although like everyone I have my favorite players.I believe Gradkowski should be starting because he has earned it.He outplayed JC in the pre-season and in the 1 game they both performed. My question is what has JC done in a Raider uniform that warrants the loyalty being given him by some?I don’t dislike the guy,but clearly another player has played better than him at the same position.
////////////////////////////////////////////////////
Not loyalty but Grads has had as many good games as JC has had bad ones….1 1/2. His only good game last year was at Pitt, he actually had a pretty average game in Cincy but our D and ST gutted out a win and Grads made the throws when we needed them. I have no loyalty to either, im just not ready to close the book on Jason without giving him what i feel is a fair shot. If grads ends up being our guy then release Jason and bring Brennan back at seasons end.

Severe,
No I am not slow. Yes English is my second language but I think I understand the quote below just fine.
“Cable: I think before you go into all that or read into all that, it’s about winning on Sundays. A decision was made yesterday to do that. Some of the benefits to it are the fact that Bruce has been around, yes, but if you remember, he’s had less work in the new system than Jason.”
Jason has been afforded every opportunity and has worked more with the first unit this offseason than Bruce has. Yet the man just gets it done.
So can you read or are you just in denial?

JB,
I was agreeing with your poitn that Grad fires up and lead his team. We were in their redzone. 2nd and long, they called for a qB draw. Grad ran up the middle got 8 yds or something and got blasted by their LB’s. He bounced up and started screaming back at the lambs to let them know they didnt hurt him. The fans got fired up as repeated by Dell who was there and the team got fired up.

Your afternoon Brandon Jacobs update
So here’s the latest on everyone’s favorite grouchy, helmet-tossing Giants running back.
There have been multiple reports confirming that Brandon Jacobs would not mind being traded and that he’s threatened the same thing before.
But the consensus has emerged that Jacobs made no such formal request yet. Furthermore, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Giants would deal him away.

Yes that is what we need in a QB and last week we took the oppurtunity away from JC to do just that after a halftime adjustment of protection and playcalling. People keep saying what has jason done to justify a start and i say nothing on the field, but he has only played a game and a half. This offseason he got all of our WRs heads in the playbook and eyes in the film room and built a relationship with them off the field. So far his efforts have been fruitless, but it has only been a game and a half.

September 20th, 2010 at 10:03 pm
Before everybody writes off JC, let’s just give him his opportunity to grow IN OAKLAND and WITHIN the Raider organization. I don’t care about what he did in WA or anywhere else. It’s what he does while he’s here. JC is still new to the Oakland team and that does make a difference. He’s new to the particular offense and he’s new to the OC. If all adds up to being conservative. Give he guy a reasonable amount of time to get it together. I’m not saying to start him – I think for now, Grads has earned that opportunity. It rare that any team can make it through the season with the same QB. After all, this is a team sport and w are fortunate to have all 3 of our QB’s available to us. We could be stuck with JaLoser and then we’d really be screwed. Let JC mature under our system and let’s see where that takes him. I’m sure AD will let TC do whatever he wants personnel-wise as long as he’s winning. What’s really important is that we are winning and when someone goes down due to injury, whomever replaces them maintains the same high level of performance. Just continue to win. That will solve most of our disagreements.

Grads has been building chemistry for a year and a half? LOL. Russell was the unquestioned starter last year. Grads got a few games towards the end. And Campbell was handed the starting job outright when he came here this year. Bruce was hurt. So when was Bruce building all this chemistry with the starters? They all meet in his backyard each day during the offseason? lol…
September 20th, 2010 at 10:17 pm
It is true that JC has only had 1 1/2 “real” games. Just like it is also true that JC has had more time playing with the starters under this new system, but that Bruce has had more time with the players overall. Considering all that, you also have to take into account that Bruce has shown more in less time than JC. Also that just like last year, the team seems to respond to him.
I think we can all agree that RIGHT NOW it would seem like Bruce gives the team the better chance to win. Just like we should all agree that it is too early to count JC out. Sure, JC has his faults, just like Bruce does. But what makes up for it is his playmaking ability. Bruce just makes things happen, whether that’s because of chemistry built last year, or whatever, it is there, and we can’t deny it.

I would surmise that the answer is because AD said so. When he brought him over from WA, Grads was hurt, Frye was subject to being hurt, I’m not sure if Boller was here yet or not and AD, after having written off JaLoser, brought in an experienced veteran QB. JC was getting the starting reps in camp so it only made sense that he be declared the starter. Right wrong or indifferent, someone needed to be declared the starter and JC was it.
Nothing is in cement other than death & taxes. I fully expect TC to start Grads this week. JC is a pro and he’ll deal with it and hopefully get better as a result of the move.
September 20th, 2010 at 10:23 pm
Well, changing the topic a bit….I know we’ve only played 2 teams but looks like we’re 9th in Total Defense (because of our rushing) and 11th in total defense. Not bad. Got a little fat, statistically, against the Rams but let’s build on this.

Ok I guess I was wrong. TJ has stated a reason why he believes JC should start. His answer has merit but I believe TC’s job is on the line and wining now is more important to him. Right now, I believe Grads gives us a better chance of winning. If we could get up by 20+ points over Arizona, I’d not be against JC coming in and get the practical experience with the 1’s that TJ’s talking about. That would be a win-win situation.
September 20th, 2010 at 10:34 pm
We don’t have a longterm answer right now. Play the best available player, which is Gradkowski.
JC has been playing for how long now? Yeah, I know. Many different systems but why does he get a pass and not Grads? Somehow you know Grads isn’t the answer but JC is? Why? Strong arm? lol Please…takes more than that to be a successful QB. Gannon didn’t have a strong arm. But he had leadership, knew all the plays and routes, and had balls. JC couldn’t even get them lined up right on the 4th and 1. And slides short of the sticks like some sissy. You need a sack to play QB
September 20th, 2010 at 10:35 pm
Priest, that is what practice,OTAs,and the pre-season is for.Or are you saying we shouldn’t worry about winning, that getting a guy who MIGHT be the future reps is more important? If that is the case, why not put the rookie Olinemen in so they can get reps?Last year when we played the rookie WRs you and most others said they shouldn’t be playing because they didn’t give us the best chance to win now.
September 20th, 2010 at 10:38 pm
Everry team needs and has to have a longterm answwer at the most important position. As fans we don’t have to agree but that is obviously why they traded for him. Now everyone wants them to abandon that 2 games into the season and I think that’s a bit unreasonable. I know the Gards argument and I agree with it. He has much more command at this point. Again that doesn’t mean we cannot win with Campbell as he gets better week by weeek. If there is a need for Gards to some in out of the bullpin yu do it until Campbell either proves he doesn’t have it or proves he does.
September 20th, 2010 at 10:40 pm
Or on the other hand you tell Campbell thanks but no thanks and move on. But right now there is no question that Grads does play much faster and has a lot more command NO QUESTION!!

I don’t think Cable is in a building mode right now. He needs wins. Building or not, the time for wins is now.
Nobody here wants to agonize anymore, and the first 6 qtrs were loud and clear what might have been a 4/5 win season. Grads give the Raiders right now the best chance to win. It really is that simple.
September 20th, 2010 at 10:43 pm
Lefty12
Cambell is not a rookie, he is a vet who just needs reps. I’m not saying he for sure IS the longterm answer but I think as an organization they need that question answered. So they can either move on or solidify him as the starter.
September 20th, 2010 at 10:45 pm
I think TC is going to play whomever has the hot hand that week. His job is on the line & he knows it. He’ll do whatever it takes to win. If that means platooning players at various positions (like he’s doing now at OLT), I think that’s what he’s going to do. He’s going to force inner-team competition. This may not be the best overall approach to use but as long as it is working…
If JC doesn’t work out and significantly improve and assume leadership, don’t be surprised to see AD pick up Michael Vick next year in FA.
September 20th, 2010 at 10:46 pm
That is all I am saying.I say let Campbell sit, watch, and learn for the time being and hope when he is needed and called upon he performs better than he is at the present time.I’m not like S&B and saying cut him.He might turn out to be a very good QB.But as of now,he shouldn’t nor does he deserve to be the starter.
September 20th, 2010 at 10:47 pm

September 20th, 2010 at 10:48 pm
i can explain why campbell remains the starter in three words = he can throw the deep pass.
September 20th, 2010 at 10:50 pm
How can you tell the team they have to perform or the next guy in line will take your job and sit a guy who has clearly outperformed the other at the most important position on the team?
September 20th, 2010 at 10:53 pm
From what I’ve seen of Michael Vick’s play recently, he’s really changed. He’s no longer a RB who throws the ball, he’s now a pass first and run as a last resort QB. He’s really matured. I guess prison will do that for you. He could be successful here with our current cast of characters. With a more effective & productive O-line, he could be absolutely amazing. I can easily see him fitting in here.
And for the record, I don’t care about the potential animal rights protesters. Everybody has a right to beat a drum no matter the cause. So let them join in on the festivities and just pick up the beat.

The Raiders should be favored to win the AFC West and to reach the AFC championship game, if for no other reason than the amount of money they committed to their 53 players this season.
The Raiders are on the hook for $135.2 million, second only to the New York Jets ($135.7) among AFC teams and well ahead of division rivals San Diego ($108 million), Denver ($102.9 million) and Kansas City ($84.5 million).

Lefty,
I like BG. Unfortunately, he has two bad wheels and appears to be more injury prone than most in his position. It’s probably because he gives it his all and puts himself at more risk than other players. Once you’ve had knee problems the are never quite the same. I hope he’s never injured ever again. But the likelihood is that he will be reinjured again. When that starts happening the longterm view is shortened immensely. His attitude and heart are unquestioned. It’s the rest of his bodyparts that are in question.
September 20th, 2010 at 11:07 pm
Nick Miller is a player. He just needs the opportunity to play. He’s ot great hands and seems to have the ability to make amazing catches when he’s in there. he real question is why isn’t he playing more.

FK-I have never said get rid of JC.The concern is he has played for too many OCs and different systems so he hesitates.Let him sit for a while, digest this system, and then see what he is-just like Plunkett did.Start the guy who gives us the best chance now.If BG gets hurt like everyone seems to think he will,JC will get his chance soon enough.

Lefty12
the first you know about this game is it is not fair, it’s based on perception by the coaches on who they think fits the system they want to run. Why are the 49ers still trying to geta career out of Alex Smith? it’s the perception of him based on what they see in practice, that’s where jobs are won and lost.
If they feel Gradkowski gives them a longterm answer you’ll see them go away from Campbell and stick to Grads. But they went out and traded for Campbell when Grads was here there is something they see in practice wether we agree or nt they see it.
Lefty12 it would be different if he had come in and did what Plunkett did when he took that job. He came in and threw TD’s and beat great teams and led us to the playoffs Grads hasn’t shown that type of dominance. Yes he’s fiery and energetic. But he really didn’t dominate like people here want to believe he was merely serviceable. 3 second half TD’s and Campbell would get nailed to the bench, but we barely won.
They know what their looking for we don’t, that’s why I say let them coach as fans we think we know but we don’t. Grads could go to AZ and stink the joint up then what would people say? You know as well as I do they would turn on him quicker than you can blink. That’s who fans are.

Priest,
Congratulations on the $100.00 gift certificate you won on the 860 am radio station this morning. You won it for being the caller with the “best analysis”/commentary. Good job, you deserved it. On the show you said, you were with him with Regards to starting JC, ahead of BG. So I guess that is your position.
I would like to see BG start. He impresses me as a natural leader and definitely has a chemistry with the entire team (and the home crowd). What scrappy Bruce did in Pitts last year was awesome, so I am sure he will perform well in an away game. Either QB should win this game but we need to separate our team from these bottom dwellers. Whoever starts better start scoring points, and keep scoring!
If they (AD/TC) start JC, it will be interesting to see if this event (getting benched) inspires JC to play with some passion. He is tall and talented and he runs fast (on a straight line) but BG’s low center of gravity allows him zip around the pocket (a little like the diminutive Drew Brees) avert sacks and make plays (and save his inferior o-line from post game ridicule.) Apparenly height isn’t that big of a factor in getting the ball delivered (how many of JC’s passes were batted down at the line of scrimmage against Tenn?). The Arizona Cardinals are just about as weak as the Lambs. It stands to reason that if the Raiders continue to play the way they started playing at the beginning of the 3rd quarter the Raiders should beat them badly. If JC starts then we may see a repeat of the Rams game. BRUUUUUCE!! BRUUUUCE!!!

#240 I can agree with that, if the coaches agree.
September 20th, 2010 at 11:23 pm
You are correct, many would, although I can truthfully say I wouldn’t because I believe right now,at this point of the season he is our best option. That isn’t to say by week say 10 that would still be the case. Also,if you remember ,the other night I said if Campbell was injured for a length of time,it wouldn’t surprise me if Boller was elevated to starter and BG was still the back-up.

Yes he has. If this wasn’t the last year on his contract, there would definitely be a QB controversy in Pennsylvania. He does fit the description of a great athlete. AD loves great athletes. You put the pieces together.

bg should start and leave it at that. this team needs to win now and ive seen enuff of campbell to know he doesnt have it. its fair for him to start this week now that he has seen whats in front of him. now is the time for him to sieze his career. he has to loosen up and have fun. id rather he just sling the ball around than be so damn scary like and hesitant. this team is too mentally weak to have another mild manner qb coast thru a game. they seem to have more fun when grads is in which makes them more confident and better.

I gave good reason for JC to start….it gives him a chance to prove himself one last time and if he fails we can yank him. On the road in Arizona is the perfect setting for him to do so. It is away from a home crowd that would likely boo him if he started and it is against a team that he could have success against through the air and build some confidence with. If he fails Grads can come in at the half finish the game and start week 4 at home and have the whole place electric, but if campbell suceeds he would come home to a crowd that would welcome him….what part of that dont you get???

DMac is #2 in the league right now for total running yards. Who woulda thunk that would happen. Not me and I was wrong about him. Good for the team and good for him. Keep it up DMac.
September 20th, 2010 at 11:36 pm
There’s only one team in the league with a fan base that would even debate whether or not someone who’s played like Gradkowski should start over someone who’s played like Campbell. Only one. Just unreal. I honestly can’t believe there is even one Raider fan on the planet who wants Campbell to start over Gradkowski. No football fan can be that loyal to the owner of their favorite team. Can they?
September 20th, 2010 at 11:36 pm
Yeah Armond i said that at the game as I watched him amp it up. This team can use his confidence factor now that’s a different twist. If he can infuse the kind of confidence they need to turn the corner he is worth his weight in gold. That would really raise the bar for the level of play at that position in order to be the starter. Now I’ll go a 100 miles with that. Because it’s immeasurable. But if it is just marginal that’s where I’d prefer the player with the bigger upside.
September 20th, 2010 at 11:40 pm
i might call in tittles show but that dude annoys me with his negativity. he says things at times that make no sense. i would love to get andrew luck in 2 years and i like that kellen moore out of boise st. mallet looks pretty good 2. we will have to get our own qb in the draft within the next 2 years. right now we need a safety valve to get us goin. we should get our young team confidant and ready to win before we play our next young qb like how the packers did with rodgers.

Best point that you made all day, my only issue is it is hard to build the chemistry that he needs with his wr’s when he is on the bench. what would have happened if we never gave Bruce that chance and yanked him after he took 2 sacks and lost a fumble against the jets? or after he threw 2 picks in 9 pass attempts against KC? or after he only threw for 183 yards against cincy with 2 tds, but throwing another int and losing another fumble? Or even worse what if we annointed Russell the starter after his comeback in Denver???

Severeraiderz, was that you who said that we should start Campbell and yank him if he doesn’t play well? I couldn’t tell in the copy and pasted mess up there. Obviously, it was you.
You’re saying that the reason to start Campbell is not necessarily because he’s the best QB on the team, it’s to merely give him a chance, right? Well, if that’s your logic, couldn’t we just give anyone a chance? And just take them out if they don’t play well? I’m trying to work with your logic, here. You’re the one who’s making a case that someone should be the starter based on the criteria that they can be replaced if they fail. If you listed any other reason, I didn’t see it. It seems that’s it. IF they don’t play well, we yank them. Why not have some sort of contest where a fan could be QB for one half, if we’re going to use that logic to start anyone?

I just believe that the amount of someone’s paycheck should not count more than someone’s performance on the field.
Campbell came to us and had done absolutely NOTHING to prove that he should have been the starter. Yet he was anointed almost immediately.
Now in all fairness, Grads was injured, but he recovered in time to compete in camp.
Grads has won games for us, bottom line. That dude has earned his way onto the playing field. I don’t really see what the argument is. It’s just like in basketball. You keep feeding the hot hand.
Right now Grads is hot. He has been since the preseason. Why stop that momentum to pur Campbell in when he hasn’t been able to do anything consistently with our offense.

……………
What QB controversy? A QB controversy is when you have two good QBs, and don’t know who to go with. Typically it’s when a good starting QB gets injured, and the backup plays as good or even better. Montana/Young, Simms/Hostettler, Bledsoe/Brady. The Raiders benched their starting QB for Gradkowski, who played well. Yet for some reason there’s still debate in the organization as to who should start. We don’t have a QB controversy. We have organizational chaos, and always have.

It’s unbelievable this is a debate. There’s only one fanbase in the league that would argue over whether someone like Gradkowski should start over someone like Campbell. Just Raider fans. The support for Campbell is blind loyalty, period. You have to defy reality to support Campbell starting.

Mr. Campbell should get one more start.
He knows he has to produce results or he sits.
Jason has generated about as much offense as Favre, Flacco, Romo, and a couple others with as good a record or better, thanks to Mr. Gradkowski.
I do think he should be given at least one more quarter though, he now has wide recievers who have proved to themselves they are NFL caliber WRs.

The Panthers & Bills made a QB switch, though they are both 0-2.
Raiders still could have possibly pulled out a victory over the Rams w/ Jason at QB as the Raiders defense & special teams were outstanding.
Rams’ second TD was off a turnover.

I do believe the Raiders came out of the game over the Rams with no serious injuries.
Did the Raiders sustain any injuries?
September 21st, 2010 at 4:01 am
I would stick with Gradkowski for the following reasons:
1. They look terrible with Campbell in there
2. The team plays for Gradkowski (not sure why)
3. The playcalling is more restrained and realistic with Gradkowski….not trying to hit’em deep but move the chains
4. All three QBs are suspect…we know Boller is a washout and Campbell just proved he’s one so let’s find out if Gradkowski can be a starter
4a. Starters play over the course of the season..can Gradkowski do it when they game plan him
5. Need to find out if Gradkowski = Delhomme (in his prime) or JT O’Sullivan and Shaun Hill
Play out the string with Gradkowski (good or bad) so that the team can move on

It’s unbelievable this is a debate. There’s only one fanbase in the league that would argue over whether someone like Gradkowski should start over someone like Campbell. Just Raider fans. The support for Campbell is blind loyalty, period. You have to defy reality to support Campbell starting.

I would cut Campbell for the very reason that Cable is trying to avoid….and that’s controverey.
Campbell doesn’t strike me as a backup QB type. He should go…probably out of the league..but he should go.
The team cannot move the ball with him in there. The offense has looked awful and then worse.
Gradkowski was hitting his receivers. I want to see if he can do it over 15 weeks because I am SKEPTICAL for a variety of reasons I won’t rehash again.
Start Gradkowski

Has anyone on here started a conversation on how it might be bad thing how Cable so quickly is grabbing and yanking guys? I am more and more not a fan of Cable handling of his supposed guys. Mario and mario might not be good but wow that was quick 2nd game of season and Veld hey he should be somewhere on the line but putting from center to left tackle the two most important positions on offensive lol. Put a guy and leave em and let them learn. Cable is starting to show is true colors to me how about to some of you guys?

49ers last night were not very poised at the end of the game.
You know you can’t leave much time on the clock if you score against the Saints, especially when they have 2 timeouts.
Yet they were running out of bounds every play, with a 1:30 on the clock inside the red zone.
Anyone with half a brain knew that even if they tied the game, they left way too much time on the clock. Gore should have stayed in bounds on the screen, Smith should have turned it upfield and slid, the rookie WR should have tried to get some yards instead of bolting for the sideline at the 7.
The stuff you learn as you try to take that next step up.
September 21st, 2010 at 5:51 am
I think Bruce should start this week and going forward, however I have followed the raiders long enough to know that is not likely to happen.
September 21st, 2010 at 5:54 am
Tough to read between the lines Bcz24, but if Cable were going to start JC, I think he would have talked him up a little in the presser.
Maybe said things weren’t so bad in the first half, blah blah blah.
Instead he cited how he didn’t line people up right, and that he has had more time in the offense than Bruce.
I guess we shall see.

Cable said that the difference in O-Line play from first half to second half had more to do with half-time adjustments for the OL than it did a change in QB … I’ll buy that.
We all saw the defense make in-game adjustments to shut down Steven Jackson!
I’m just glad to have a QB that puts the work in and completes screens & dumpoffs
calling Jason Campbell “JaWalrus 2″ is just plain ignorant. He threw for over 3600 yards & 20 TD’s last season with a lame duck HC, awful o-line and 5 RB’s that landed on IR. He will overcome adversity
September 21st, 2010 at 6:27 am
I will give you that Rockstar. Not calling JC JaWalrus 2, because yeah…that’s not right or accurate. JC is more accurate, but…what I don’t like about him is that fact that he dumps off a lot! He’s a very mobile QB that can run…but here’s the difference in comparison to Bruce: JC runs, Bruce scrambles to buy time. Hey, I’m with you…I will support JC until he proves that he shouldn’t be, and I like his attitude! But now is his time to work on his weaknesses!
September 21st, 2010 at 6:28 am
I like Bruce Gradkowski. He played well against the Rams. played well during the preseason. played well in 2 of 4 games last year.
Just don’t think he’s the long-term solution at QB.
I’d rather see JC develop a chemistry with his WR’s and replace the weak links on the O-Line than release JCamp after 2 weeks only to roll with Bruce who might give us 5 starts before landing on IR. Then it’s the Kyle Boller show, a Top 10 draft pick (which goes to New England) and we start from scratch at the QB position again next year
September 21st, 2010 at 6:29 am

Agreed. I’ll be the first one to admit that he must improve if he wants to keep his job and let’s hope that being benched was a wakeup call for him. Like Jhill and I talked about yesterday, he overthrew DHB streaking down the sideline with 2 steps on his man, twice. He tried to force that ball in a tight spot with 3 Rams around his target and thats a no-no. another INT was dropped
JCamp is on like his 9th OC in as many seasons. Hue Jax hasn’t done very well the first 2 weeks of the season imo. still too many drops as well. missed Seabass FG. T-Branch trying to cover WR’s. stupid penalties galore. if the rest of the team gets a second shot, so should Jason Campbell
September 21st, 2010 at 6:39 am
I think the real issue is that Jason has the some demeanor and personality ON the field as Jamarcus. He doesnt show any emotion. This team is a young team with no identity. Bruce is the ideal guy to lead this team because he is a firey underdog me against the world type and his personality fits where this team is going. Campbell hasnt done anything to EARN the starting job, so really no second chance is required. We are simply corrected a depth chart error 1.5 weeks late.
September 21st, 2010 at 6:41 am
I’m all for getting rid of Campbell.

WAY too early for that, unless some team offers a good pick or player in return.
Al Davis gave the man a pay raise before he even suited up in Oakland. that was a mistake. He had 1 year left on his contract at a decent salary. Should have made him EARN it
obviously Al hasn’t learned from the Tommy Kelly type deals in the past
September 21st, 2010 at 6:41 am
Again Rockstar, agreed! I hope it is his wake up call! I think releasing him now would be …well…insert own word here. However, if Bruce gets the start as long as he stays healthy, then I believe we should resign Colt, because of the fact thay Bruce is injury prone. Let him learn the offense and then see what we got next year! Never was a Boller fan to begin with!

“– Darren McFadden has shown admirable restraint through two games, 48 tough carries and 240 yards rushing, never uttering a hint of an “I told you so.’’

BCZ: Jason & Bruce were supposed to compete for the starting QB job in camp, remember?
Jason stayed healthy (until the SF game – thanks Mario!) and Bruce didn’t.
neither QB has “earned” anything imo. JCamp was awarded the job by default, if you will. Nnamdi Asomugha, the coaches and everybody else said he was the biggest reason we’d make the playoffs this year. What changed?
September 21st, 2010 at 6:53 am
Interesting psychological move pairing Bush and McFadden as room-mates. Stick the two guys together over a period of time, hoping they’ll bond. In doing so, there’s less chance of rivalry between the pair becoming a distraction.
Any one know if they roomed together last year?
Campbell? I think Cable was all set to go with Grad until the trade was made with Washington. Cable had made up his mind last year that Russell was a bust (GIve him credit for that).
It’s undeniable that the team playsharder, and the coaches coach smarter when Grad is in there.
Hea coach wants Bruce, many fans would seem to see the switch at QB, but it’s Davis’ call.
IMO? I go with Gradkowski.
September 21st, 2010 at 6:53 am
Bruce earned the chance to start by winning some games here last year, and by firing up this team last week. Bruce ALSO outplayed Campbell when given the opportunity to in preseason.
I think maybe guys were paying lip service to Jason… You still think he gives us the best opportunity? Through 6 quarters he has led the team to 16 points, through 2 quarters Bruce has led us to 13 points. I think it merits an opportunity. Jason has done nothing to crown himself the starter in my opinion.

September 21st, 2010 at 6:59 am
Campbell agreed Saturday to a contract with Oakland that will pay him $3.14 million in 2010, plus a $100,000 workout bonus and $4.5 million in 2011, according to a league source. Campbell expects to start immediately as he joins an unimpressive group of quarterbacks that includes JaMarcus Russell, Charlie Frye, Kyle Boller and Bruce Gradkowski.

Yes, the run defense had improved and Darren McFadden was running like a man possessed. that opens up the passing game and as Cable pointed out, they made some adjustments to the O-Line at halftime
the Rams simply aren’t that good. In reality, we should have beat them by at least 14 points. The 2010 Raiders aren’t a playoff team and that will cost Tom Cable his job at the end of the year, if not by the bye week. His O-Line is atrocious and he was already stripped of play calling duties. Al Davis took credit for the draft
September 21st, 2010 at 7:11 am
Campbell must be given a chance to RESPOND positively to his benching.
Just like DMAC has responded to me calling out his poor play.

I hate the notion that absolutely Bruce is not a long-term answer, but yet Campbell “may be” one so let’s develop him.
I could buy that neither are, that is fair. But Washington tried to “develop” him for 50 starts, and his team progressively got worse. They ended up giving him away literally.
1.5 games into his new situation, his coach was about to fired, his fans hated him already, and he played like a steaming pile of crap.
There is nothing to develop with Jason Campbell. The man is almost 29 years old!!!

Both QBs could elevate their play if they know that they will only get 2 quarters to show they deserved the start.
September 21st, 2010 at 7:14 am
BCZ: my point was, are we really willing to flush 7+ million down the toilet because the new starting QB played average for 1.5 games
He was far from being the teams only problem!
Bruce Gradkowski was CUT by 3 teams and JCamp was TRADED by 1 team … BG was labeled “unimpressive” with the other clowns at QB last year and thats why we traded for Campbell in the first place
September 21st, 2010 at 7:16 am
Well…wasn’t Gannon traded by two teams? Well, he wasn’t cut, or was he cut in Minnesota? I don’t know…all I know is that JC has got to work harder and “take” his job back!!!
September 21st, 2010 at 7:17 am
Campbell doesn’t do run defense and as for Mcfadden’s running it was a result of better line-play feeding of the back of the crowd’s reaction to Gradkowski’s entrance.
The whole team got a lift from the QB switch. If Campbell stays in there’s no way the atmosphere in the stadium gets amped.
Sure they made some adjustments. They benched Campbell.
September 21st, 2010 at 7:18 am
Stop bringing up that Bruce was cut by three teams. Its an old argument dude. He is playing good football for us. His attitude is leading this team in the right direction ON the field. Jason Campbell simply doesnt have the on field presence to lead this team.

Let’s be honest here … has Can of Soup ever been anything more than an average quarterback for his entire career? … if memory serves, the Foreskins won nothing while he was there … he’s vanilla (no pun intended), a non-impact guy who might work on a team like the NY Jets, who want to play defense first. He won’t hurt you, but he won’t help you that much either … Just the fact that Bruce outplayed him last week tells you everything you need to know … Don’t get me wrong, I love Bruce, he has big balls … But, really, does anybody really foresee him becoming a franchise quarterback? … So, if Can of Soup is not good enough to outplay Bruce, where does that leave him? … As a decent backup somewhere … But, here’s my guess: Al loves Can of Soup. So he will start vs. Cards. The Cable Guy will insert Bruce if he needs to before the noose gets too tight around his own neck (like last week). Remember, the Cable Guy might be in the unemployment line of Bruce hadn’t bailed him out last week …

Re-read my post and and seriously say we were talking about different things. You were complaining about JC not sensing the pressure, he does. When he senses the pressure he runs (he had a nice first down run sunday) or he gets it to his safety valve.
===============================================
I think that Campbell’s problem isn’t that he doesn’t sense pressure. I think he just doesn’t see the whole field or is indecisive. He does look to his checkdown often and doesn’t spread the ball to many people. He is slow in deciding and misses reads from what I can tell.
Grads is very decisive, gets the ball out fast, and does have a good feel for pressure generally.
September 21st, 2010 at 8:00 am
Cable’s doing whatever it takes to win. I got no problem with that. If a player is not getting it done get him to hell out of there; We’ll get someone who will do the job.

the only way this team can win games is to run the ball and play good defense. keep the score close. dominate field position and time of possession
we’re not set up to be a pass happy team playing catch up. this team simply doesn’t have the QB, OL or WR’s to be that type of offense
September 21st, 2010 at 8:10 am
Raiders need to get revenge on Arizona for Oren O’Neal. Them Cardinals ST’ers ended his career. I propose we run it down their throats, double dose of McFadden all day long.
September 21st, 2010 at 8:10 am
Here’s the bottom line … After watching Peyton dismantle the NY Giants on Sunday, how is it fair that we, as Raiders fans, have to debate who’s better Can of Soup or Bruce … If you put all the Raiders QBS from the past 7 years together, you still don’t have one Peyton … QBs win in the NFL … With just a few exceptions (Bears Super Bowl team and Baltimore’s Super Bowl team) Super Bowls are won by QBs. That’s just a fact.

Big John makes an impact
The run defense came up big Sunday, shutting down Steven Jackson the last three quarters, and John Henderson was the inside man of the effort. The defensive tackle started in place of the injured Richard Seymour and showed why the Raiders signed him.
“We really came out fired up,” he said. “We wanted to make sure we stopped the run. We didn’t want him to get going because we knew he was going to try to get going in the second half. We just got after him. There was a good swarm to the ball and the attitude we had towards him.”
Is that the key against Jackson, having the second guy and third guy jump on him?
“Right. He’s big, so he’s going to knock the first guy right off. So you have to make sure everybody’s around him, and that’s what we did. I think we did a great job of that.”
Was it more scheme or want-to?
“It’s all about want. It’s always about want in this game. You’ve just got to want it, and I think the guys did a good job with that.”
He got off to a good start, but you guys obviously didn’t panic.
“No, we weren’t panicking. We were having too much fun out there. The guys were still rallying around each other. We said, ‘He’s going to get something.’ We came back the second half, we made sure he wasn’t going to get that much. I thought we did a good job with everybody getting after the ball. That’s what the important thing was, we swarmed the ball. We did a good job of that.”
With Seymour out, you got a lot of work. A lot more snaps than the first week?
“Yeah, it was a lot more snaps, but it was still comfortable. Everybody was sharing the rotation. That’s a good rotation we’ve got. I’m loving it.”
Fun being in the starting lineup?
“It was fun. I still look at it, not starting the game but you still feel like a starter. We still get the same snaps in the game. It’s really no big deal for me right now. I just want to win.”

The only way we could contend, and RR nailed it, is if we decide we are a running team … We run right, we run left, we run up the middle, and when we’re done with that we run some more … We own the clock, keep defense fresh and wins games 17-14, etc. … That’s our hope. Our only hope.

Cable said he has a good idea of who will start but won’t tell us until Wednesday.
“There isn’t going to be a controversy,” he said. “I’ll make a good decision, the right decision, and we’ll go from there.”
It’s unclear how much input owner Al Davis will have in the decision. Davis traded for Campbell in the offseason and compared him to Super Bowl MVP Jim Plunkett. Six quarters into the season, Campbell was told to take a seat against the Rams.

With McFadden’s speed and Bush’s bulk, it’s possible … we cold wear down defensive lines because our O line is huge (even if it’s not all that talented) .. But if you think about it, our O Line has been good at running the ball so far … Biggest problem is pass protection

Big John in the middle makes all the difference. I gotta believe a coach like Mike Waufle, who has won superbowls, understands that this team needs at least one lineman who will stay home and clog the lanes. All the Raiders talking about gang-tackling being the difference are just towing the company line. Gang-tackling wasn’t possible against Chris Johnson because only one person had a bead on him, once he blew threw the line. Gang-tackling isn’t the solution, its the result of gap discipline, linemen staying home to clog lanes and linebackers knowing their assignments. I hope the adjustments made in the 2nd quarter on Sunday are indicitave of the defense growing a little older and wiser. Guys like McClain and Houston maturing, and guys like Hendo, Shaugnessy, Scott, Kelly, Groves and Wimbley getting in sync.

We should get Hartwig to play center. That should solve our center issues for the immediate future.
Play Veldheer and Henderson at the tackle spots.
Play Gallery/Loper at LG and move Walker inside to RG.
Henderson/Gallery-Loper/Hartwig/Walker/Veldheer.

In the second half this past week, Bruce tossed the ball 22 times in the half, and I believe McFadden had 16 carries.
So 40+ passes, and 30+ carries for Darren.
That will equal a 31-10 victory for the squad.

JFB Not if Grads goes 50% it wont. Grads is the leader of this team and gets my vote to start, but he has to be better than 50% for us to get a W.
DMac will only get about 20 carries this week. Bush will play and get 15 or so imo…
September 21st, 2010 at 8:27 am
J Marshall is never given a chance to unleash the defense loose. We are always playing from behind or nursing a 2 point lead.
This offense needs to get going yesterday!
September 21st, 2010 at 8:27 am
With a 50% completion percentage, I don’t think they will give the Polish popgun that many opportunities. Even if Campbell gets the start, he has already proven to be ineffective at getting the ball out. With McFadden suddenly breaking out and Bush close to coming back, and considering the O-line’s only skill is run-blocking, this seems like an opportunity for the Raiders coaches to define the personality of this offense. For the last 7 years, they have been the “Keystone Cops” offense; this coming week, they should start a new chapter as the power running offense. Pound the rock early and often, it will result in some 3 outs initially, but that’s OK, our defense is usually stout to start the game. But after a few series, that big O-line will start mauling people and McFadden will get loose. I think this is the week we finally see a home-run from McFadden, 2nd or 3rd quarter, busting thru the gut for 60 or so yards and 6.
September 21st, 2010 at 8:28 am
BCZ … You better hope Alex doesn’t pull a Game 1 repeat … If he does, I’m not so sure there’s going to be any smashing going on in that game

BART … I agree a million percent … This team needs an identity … I remember old raider teams used to pound the rock for days, and use the passing game when needed … Stabler did it a lot … Of course, we had shell and upshaw … but still, I think that’s thje road this team needs to take … Just Pound, Baby

Cable isn’t saying who’s starting so Cards can’t prepare.
Simple as that.
Pretty obvious Grads is starting.
To say that they’re about the same is just stupid troll talk.
Campbell plays scared. Grads plays confident.
Pocket awareness for Grads. Campbell goes down and fumbles like Jamarcus.
And I noticed this in preseason. They play better for Grads. Maybe it’s because he’s a better leader. Not afraid to grab a lineman’s facemask and tell him to get his f$#%king mind in the game!
Grads show confidence in receivers throwing it up and letting them make crazy catches. Same thing Warner used to do. It may come back and bite him but all successful qb’s do this.
Grad’s interception was tipped. So he played a clean game. Made some mistakes. Passing game will improve w/ Mcfad 2nd in nfl in rushing teams have to bite when they fake it to him. And Mcfad and Miller always there for safety valve dump off.
I thought Sparkowski was the real thing last season and still do.

September 21st, 2010 at 8:45 am
A team that is this shaky needs to play to their strengths, and that means controlling time of posession and letting the big uglies push, instead of kick-step. Henderson and Walker scare me as a pass-blockers, but the combo of Henderson/Veldheer, Loper, Walker and Barnes blocking up front is a sweet deal for McFadden. If Bush is back, give him 15 carries and boom you got a decent offense.
I like the Veldheer/Henderson platoon at left tackle, this seems like an idea that should apply to Bruce Campbell as well. The coaches are babying him too much, not giving him any confidence. Put him in there for a few series per game, when we intend to pound the rock, let him get his beak wet. I would love to see a line consisting of:
Veldheer,Loper,Satele,Campbell,Walker

platoon Bruce Campbell with Cooper Carlisle during the Cardinals game, start getting his confidence up. Once Gallery is healthy, we need Loper to slide over to starting RG. How Carlisle retains that starting job is beyond me, he looks like a little kid standing next to Langston Walker.
I also think J. Campbell gets the start. His last chance to take the reins of this team is on the road in Arizona, where the rabid raider fans wont boo him and game-plan should be a double dose of that McFadden ish. But his leash will probably be shorter than it was Sunday: The first time he takes a knee, spikes the ball or slide-falls 3 yards early, Cable will yank him. A win at Arizona is just as important as that home win last week, if Cable wants to survive past bye week, and he knows it.

Best example of Gallery’s suckiness was the trick play in Game 1 where JLH threw a pass to Campbell out in the flat. Gallery had one little DB to block out and Campbell would have been all alone. Galleery hurled himself forward and completeley misses any portion of the players body then fell harmlessly to the ground…and we all know what happened next.

Expect to score about 80 points this week.

Braveheartraider,
I don’t think Al will fire Cable during the season no matter what.
Al has taken too much grief over the years for running through coaches. Al will let Cable finish out the season and then not renew his contract going into the lockout. Once the lockout is over, hopefully some of the Al Davis stink will have washed off the franchise and maybe a legit HC might take the job.

I received an email from Marley, commenting about the league scoring. i sent out a warning to all before the draft on the scoring, only a few suggestions, and nobody said a thing regarding the QB scoring.
So next time, I;ll look at it again, next year. For this season ‘ I love it, it has everybody on their toes and scoring.
I checked on yahoo average scoring fantasy points and our league, is above then average.

Gradkowski, Campbell conundrum could spark a locker-room rift
Posted by Mike Florio on September 21, 2010 12:05 PM ET
With the Raiders unexpectedly yanking quarterback Jason Campbell for Bruce Gradkowski and then apparently doctoring the post-game quotes from coach Tom Cable to suggest . . . well, something, we’re picking up strong indications of a potential locker-room problem between Campbell and Gradkowski.
Campbell perceives, we’re told, that Gradkowski actively has lobbied quarterbacks coach Paul Hackett, who worked with Gradkowski in Tampa, to give Gradlowski a chance to play.
Gradkowski got that chance on Sunday, and he made the most of it in a come-from-behind win over the Rams.
Whether Campbell’s perception is accurate doesn’t matter. It’s the kind of thing that could create trouble between the two quarterbacks, sparking an atmosphere much different than the whole Warner Brothers polite gophers vibe in Philly. It also could, as other situations like this have done, spread to the locker room.
In Oakland, the potential dysfunction arguably wouldn’t even qualify as typical dysfunction. But dysfunction it still is, and it comes at a time when the Raiders supposedly had found an answer at the quarterback position.
The challenge for Cable will be to come up with a way to contain the situation before it becomes a problem. And it likely will require an approach far more subtle than accidentally breaking someone’s jaw.

If we had picked up Vick, chances are we would have ruined him. Now is the time to pick him up.
We would be putting up 30 plus points every game. All our young track stars would benifit. We have a young team with tons of talent. A great QB would put us over the top.
Can you imagine Bush/DMAC pounding the ball and every time Vick goes back to pass they have to worry about him as well.

Coaching matters.
Raiders have no coaching. Tom Cable is not an elite coach.

KC has put together an A+ Front office, along with A+ coaches.

taken from comment posted at pft…
ESPN’s Bill Williamson has a MUCH more logical posting regarding the Raiders QB situation.
Basically the Raiders OL is so pathetic that Gradkowski’s style of play actually works better with them.
And I quote:
“Gradkowski is the type of player who can make do with Oakland’s weak offensive line because he gets the ball out of hands quickly and he makes plays with his feet. When the protection breaks down, Gradkowski can keep plays going.”
Bottom line Campbell is the long term QB and better fits what the Raiders want to do. He has been “blessed” by Al and if Cable can’t make it work with Campbell, eventually Cable will go and Hue Jackson will take over.
BUT until the Raiders can field a legit NFL caliber OL, Cable is forced to consider playing Gradkowski. Cable has GOT to start winning games OFTEN or he will be GONE!

September 21st, 2010 at 10:00 am
Raider defensive staff, rotated in Houston as the three technique last game. I watched him for a few plays, looks comfortable to me.
I just believe, they need to realign the players, and stop messing with a speed rusher, over a gap discipline player.
I just believe the more matchups we create, the offensive line, must match up to the Raiders.
Seymour can bounce in and out, so can Houston, leave Henderson in the NT position and play Shonasty on either end and play Scott in a stand up position.
Let the other teams QB, figure who is coming or playing pass.
Let’s have some deception, this straight 4-3 stuff only works so long, as we have a lead, we need more hybrid formations, and we have the players to pull it off.

September 21st, 2010 at 10:10 am
The rule of thumb is that each year you go out, knocks down about a round for a trade.
I.E. A 2010 5th rounder is equal to a 2012 3rd rounder.
So the market for Campbell was a 2012 4th rounder, or a 2010 6th rounder.
So if we take a pick in 2015, maybe we can get a 2nd rounder for him!!!
September 21st, 2010 at 10:11 am

Campbell bails out in a heap of fear, in front of a guy who is 30 pounds lighter than him, with a first-down still possible.
Bruce takes on two LB’s, who weigh about 30 pounds more than him, head-first with maybe an extra yard still possible.
And Bruce is the injury-prone one? If Campbell got that hit they might have had to call in the Medevac and air-lifted him off the field.

Bruce missed two games this preseason with injury, so did Campbell.
Bruce couldn’t finish one year so far in the league (last year), same with Campbell (2007).

My list of Bruce believers from all offseason would be:
Plunketthead
4eva
Chris in NY
R8eray
…..and maybe a couple of others that slip my mind.

Jason Campbell learns how to be a bit more accurate with the WRs, I have no problem with him at QB.
Inaccuracy is a big issue though.
September 21st, 2010 at 10:26 am
There is a bunch of b.s. on this board.
Campbell threw the ball into the dirt because the screen was blown up by the defense, rather than take another sack or force the ball in and have a turn over he got rid of it. THIS IS WHAT YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO!!!!!.
I saw several plays where J.C eluded the pressure and delivered a nice ball, and one where he ran for the first down. People because of this love affair with bruce dont want to acknowledge that campbell is and was mobile in sunday’s game.
Lastly, campbell just got here, he needs time to digest the system gel with his team, and establish the timing of the offense. YOU MUST BE IN THE GAME TO GET THIS DONE!!!! THIS ONLY COMES THROUGH GAME TIME REPS!!!!! BENCHING HIM AFTER 6 QUARTERS IS DUMB. CABLE’S TIME TABLE AND CAMPBELLS TIME TABLE ARE NOT THE SAME. CABLE LOSES TO THE RAMS AND HE IS PROBABLY GONE SO HE SELFISHLY INSERTED BRUCE TO SAVE HIS OWN A$$, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME ROBBING CAMPBELL HIS CHANCE TO GET A FEEL AND GROW INTO HIS LEADERSHIP ROLE!!! THIS IS INEXCUSABLE.
Finally stop with all the of jc doesnt anticipate garbage!!! I watched campbell play all through college and most of his young nfl career. Typically it takes him until about midseason to be able to “anticipate’ and be in rythm with the receivers because he is always in a new system. In his second year with zorn he hit the ground running and almost always delivers the ball before the receivers made the break.
Opinions are fine, but please, if you havent watched campbell play before more than 1 or 2 games YOU DONT KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT!!!! Likewise if you didnt see the game on sunday, stop pretending to like you know what happened.

By the end of the season looking back Campbell will be the best QB. He has the better arm he just has not got into rythm with his WRs yet.
Grad flys by the seat of his pants and it is exciting but he won’t get them to the playoffs, with easy to catch jump balls.
You can throw that short simple BS aginst a team like the Rams. But you need a laser aginst the big boys of the NFL.

Next year’s surprise QB will be Michael Vick from FA.
AD loves great athletes and Vick, whose contract is up this year, qualifies as a great athlete with very fast feet. Believe it or not, this will be an excellent acquisition. Vick is no longer a RB who throws the ball. He’s now a pass first QB who only runs as a last resort. He has finally matured. I guess prison may have had something to do with that.
September 21st, 2010 at 10:42 am
Im sure you have heard of moral victories well this is a moral loss. The lambs gave that game to us.
J.C led the team into the redZone several times in the first half. He had one interception, and one pass that could have been picked. The other drives failed due to poor execution by the O-LINE!!!! Including the first drive that we should have scored a touchdown on. The play calling was fine, the o-line sucked!!! CAMPBELL WAS NOT STELLAR BUT HE WAS NOT AS BAD AS WHAT FOLLOWED.
Second half bruce HAD THREE BALLS BOUNCE OFF DEFENDERS!!! ONLY COMPLETED AROUND 50% OF HIS PASSES!THE INTERCEPTION THAT THE HAPLESS LAMBS MANAGED TO HOLD ON TO LET THE TEAM RIGHT BACK INTO THE GAME!!!!!
LETS BE FAIR AN HONEST, BRUCE DIDNT DO WELL, HE DID NOT OUT PLAY CAMPBELL.
HUE JACKSON SHORTENED THE PASS ROUTES, DHB WAS A BEAST, AND MACFADDEN POUNDED THE ROCK. THESE FACTORS ALONG WITH OUR DEFENSE ARE WHAT RESCUED THE GAME OF US.
BRUCE WAS LUCKY THE RAMS ARE SO BAD OTHERWISE WE WOULD BE TALKING ABOUT HIS 3 OR 4 TURNOVERS COSTING US THE GAME!!!!

While the rest of us were watching the game through unbiased Raider Fan eyes, what were you indulging in. The players played harder for Grads. Just a fact. Made his reads, Campbell didn’t. McFadden ran harder because the Rams respected Grads more and opened up running lanes to defend the pass. (not well, lol)Lastly, the Raider’s and Cable (whom I want fired)can not wait until midseason for Campbell to get it. WIN NOW!

I was not a believer in Gradowski.
I was wrong about the guy, plain and simple. The most obvious things to me is he knows the plays, knows where the ball is supposed to go before he snaps it, and he can anticipate when guys are going to be open.
If Campbell showed ANY flashed of that, I’d be all for him. ANY QB that can show that for US, I’ll be all for that guy too.

This makes too much sense. With a healthy Bush and McFadden and a diminutive QB, you’d figure we would be moving the pocket and have Bruce (assuminge he’s starting) be some sort of game manager.
You’ll hear it here first: Fugheddaboutit!
Not gonna happen. And I don’t know that it should, honestly. This is a passing team, or the ownership/coaches want it to be and Bruce has proven that he can get the ball downfield better than any QB here since Collins.

——————————————————-
QB Platoon. 8 O lineman and two receivers (running 9s) when Campbell is in, and um, a regular offense when Grads is in?

This is exactly what i am talking about.
Players didnt play harder. The defense gave up one td in the first half and one in the second (after grads interception). The execution was alittle better on offense, because the play calling was adjusted!!! Shorter throws equal quicker reads!!! Bruce benefited from the playcalling change, one becuase the o-line couldnt hold the blocks, two bruce doesnt have the arm to throw it deeper!!!!
Dmac didnt run harder for grads!!! He only got 10 carries in the first half. DMAC will always do his most damage in the second half, becuase he has pounded them in the first, and they have been chasing our wideouts all over the feild!! This is why they say great backs get better as the game goes on. That has nothing to do with grads.
Campbell was around 50% just like grads. 8-15 1td 1 pick, 11-22 1 td 1 pick, whats the difference?
Yes we can wait until mid season for campbell to find a the timing. THIS TEAM IS NOT A PLAYOFF TEAM, WE ARE CLOSER TO THE BOTTOM THAN WE ARE TO THE MIDDLE OF THE PACK. IN THIS SITUATION YOU PLAY THE GUYS WITH THE MOST UPSIDE, GIVING GAME REPS AND BUILDING CHEMISTRY!! SO NEXT YEAR WHEN YOU ADD MORE PEICES YOU ALREADY HAVE A NUCLEUS OF LEADERS IN A DEFINED ROLL. WE AND CAMPBELL CAN WAIT UNTIL MID SEASON… CABLE CAN NOT!! PULLING CAMPBELL PUT CABLES JOB SECURITY AHEAD OF WHATS BEST FOR THE TEAM!!! fIRE HIM NOW!!!

He got people involved, mainly WRs. All the evidence is there.
I challenge anyone to dig up a better performance from Campbell than the one we saw from Bruce in Pittsburgh.
Whatever it was they adjusted, it worked. It’s pretty evident that Bruce inspires the team. He just does. Overanalyze it if you want, he’s got the leadership qualities Campbell just doesn’t have.

Al admitted his mistake and made another one by cutting Russell and trading for Jason.
Jason’s a nice guy who gives a good interview and has a big arm.
Unfortunately, he is not a leader of men. He doesn’t read the field and can’t get the ball out of his hands. When he does, it’s typically a checkdown.

FLORIO HAS NAILED IT!!!! Cable’s selfish act has caused several problems.
1.) Campbell needs game reps to build timing and rythym with the offense. He has a much higher ceiling than grads, therefore you need to play him so he may reach it. Bruce is a known commodity he is not good enough to take you anywhere in the long run.
2.) you have undermined any trust that you have built with your team leadres. All of the talk about riding it out, fighting through it together, and being pesrstint went out the window. As soon as cable thought the team might lose because his o-line wasnt getting the job done he attempted to shift blame to the qb. Class act cable.
3.) you are forcing the players to choose sides, or at the very least youve caused a distraction that players now must deal with as they will be constantly badgered about for the near future, its only week 3!!!!
4.) You have now placed yourself before the organiztion. Davis likes coaches to stay down and coach the team, not be lightning rods for controversy. Once again cable the headlines are about you, and not for possitive reasons. Lets just can this dude already

For real.
It’s not as if Campbell is some rookie that we want to wait on to develop. He’s been around for years. Redskins fans were jumping for joy when they got rid of the guy.
OK, he’s been in 8 different systems. OK, lots of different OCs. Bad O Line? Fine. Just the wrong fit in DC? Sure. Maybe once he builds a chemistry with this team and is more comfortable with the system….
Really?? We can make all kinds of excuses for the guy but he just had his job took.
Forget what he’s done in someone else’s uniform, when Bruce is in Silver and Black, he makes plays.
Campbell hasn’t made plays since Auburn.

Bruce is a known commodity
*************************
How is a guy with only 20 career starts a known commodity, while the guy with over 50 career starts needs time due to his “higher ceiling”.
They are both known commodities!!!
Bruce is a great backup looking for another chance, Campbell is a crappy starter running out of chances.
Enough already.

How ’bout DHB making a case to be an actual NFL receiver… he nearly doubled his career in one half!

I was Oaktown last week so the wifee will be like ” You just went to a game, why do you need to go again!”
All who are married, know exactly what I’m talking about!

LOL @ ray
yup – been there quite often!
my wife got mad at me on Saturday because we had rented a movie and got a Degiorno pizza for lunch, but HER brother called and asked if I could go down to the river and help him put his cabin on blocks. I skipped lunch and spent ALL friggin day helping him dig gravel, dirt and move cement blocks. we got finished just before dark and when I got home she was p1ssed because she had to be bored at home while I was away.
I said “YOUR brother needed MY help”. haha. oh well, chalk it up to pregnant hormones I guess

Mistic, Cable’s best moves BY FAR as head coach have been to bench the owner’s lost cause tall, big-armed quarterback.
Campbell just happens to be a nicer guy and can put sentences together.
I’m sure the team is behind Grad. The only reason Campbell got the job anyway was because 1. Bruce was injured and 2. he’s a pet project.
Why are we waiting for this guy to develop and reach his ceiling when we have a developed guy on the roster who ALREADY HAS a chemistry with the team?
In other words, you’re saying:
Well Jason has a higher ceiling because, um… he’s taller with a bigger arm. So let’s start him despite the ineffectiveness over the guy who is already playing well.
Again, Nation, Campbell is not a rookie.
He doesn’t have the vision by now, doubt he ever will.

Gradkowski 11-22-1-162 = 7.36 ypa
J.Campbell 8-15-1-87 = 5.8 ypa
that’s the difference, Grads moved the chains. They shortened up the routes for him, but he still managed a much higher yards per attempt. (Bradford was throwing 6.68 yards per attempt as a reference point).

You guys are goofy. BOTH quarterbacks are pretty servicable, and by playing each we are just improving our odds that one of them will take the reins and become great.
Like I ytped earlier, Campbell must react well to this lesson and play better because Gradkowski is likely to continue getting it done.
In no way is this going to divide the locker room. Cable handled the JRuss situation and kept the team unified. He will make sure the players know that QB is open for competition just like every other non-kicking spot.

6 sacks, 4 fumbles and 2 int’s , and 16 points from Campbell in six f’n quarters, but people want us to be patient.
0 sacks, zero fumbles, 1 int, 13 points in 2 quarters from Bruce.
Why are we even discussing this?
Next topic please!!!
=======================================================
1 bad snap 2 strip sacks from the blind side.
6 sacks due to terrible o-line play.
Interceptions are likley as a new qb is learning the system and and timing with his team.
Bruce HAD THREE MORE PASSES THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN PICKED. 1 WAS IN THE ENDZONE RIGHT BEFORE HIS TOUCHDOWN PASS!!!!! HIS INTERCEPTION LET THE LAMBS BACK INTO THE GAME IN THE FOURTH QUARTER!!!!
i know people dont like campbell ( eventhough most people are basing it on news clippings from a different state, and 6 quarters of football) but if anyone thinks bruce is the answer, you just dont know football.
Bruce isnt even a poor mans flutie, or jeff garcia. he surprised a couple fo teams last year. Beleive me when teams get in the film room this year and gameplan against him he will be a disaster. Gruden kept tui around for years, we all know tui was terrible. gruden felt he could develop him. Grads was drafted by gruden and washed out!!!! What does that tell you.
Bottom line is grads is as good as he is going to be in this offense, he is maxed out already, and it is not good enough!!!
campbell on the other hand has room to grow here, he needs more time.
Yes you should be patient, if anyone here is expecting more than 6-8 wins this year your fooling yourself. 6-8 win teams should focus on playing the talent with upside and building for next year!!!

Ha. Locker room rifts. Quarterback controversy. Blah blah blah. How many times does Jerry need to tell you fools that it all comes down to winning. It makes no difference NOW what decision Cable makes because the correct decision will only be perceived as such after Oakland wins or loses their next few games.
You cannot deny that Campbell looks flat and that the team has no rhythm whatsoever when he’s in the game. He is missing throws and checking down almost constantly. To best put it…he looks very UNCOMFORTABLE. Considering the O line I don’t blame him. Critics have said that Campbell is not suited for quick throws and reads. They have said that repeatedly since his tenure in Washington. That would be an offensive style more suited for Bruce.
I hate to tell you nation but that O Line cannot protect five and seven step drops. They are bad. Maybe the worst I’ve seen in pass protecting ever. If this team wants to avoid drive and momentum killing sacks, three and outs, and penalties then whoever’s under center better be able to throw to a receiver before he breaks on his pattern. Until Campbell can prove he can do that and build that trust with these younger WR’s I say give Bruce the keys.

Florio and Mystic,
Don’t be idiots. Selfish act. Wake up. There is no long term in the NFL. This fan base has been enduring garbage football for a long, long time and this team needs to learn how to win. PERIOD. Campbell wants his job he needs to get off his ass and start producing period.
September 21st, 2010 at 11:57 am
and if you’re comparing dropped interceptions. add in the three huge drops by Miller, Myers, and, DHB. All that killed drives in St. Louis territory.
September 21st, 2010 at 2:23 pm
I was watching the interview clip of DHB on Raiders.com and it looks like he has a slightly lazy eye. Now, I’m not talking down on this congenital condition, but I wonder if this has given him problems with locking in on the ball at the ‘NFL speed.’
If so, it looks like he’s learning how to deal with it, and we should have been initially more understanding-a rookie with a correctable visual disturbance.

“and it is not good enough!!!”
————–
It WAS good enough to win on Sunday and that’s more than Jason Campbell’s been able to do; in Washington OR Oakland.

Get Micheal Vick. We need a fjrst rate quarterback instead of these posers. Vick has everthing this Raider team needs to be a first rate team instead of maybe next year or we are missing one or two key players. Offense sucks because QB sucks. Now we are baving a QB contravercy over these second rate QB. give me a break. When Vick came out of prison, this was the guy I wish tbe Raider would have picked up. Be will make things happen. Al if you want to right this ship, Micbeal Vick is the one piece you need. Vick can stretch the field. GET VICK – DO THE RIGHT THING
