Depth chart lists Campbell No. 1
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010 at 10:18 am in Oakland Raiders.
For what it’s worth, the Raiders’ depth chart included in the weekly press release for Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals lists Jason Campbell as the starting quarterback, with Bruce Gradkowski No. 2.
The depth chart is unofficial and not always updated. For instance, it still lists Stevie Brown as a backup safety even though he was waived from the 53-man roster Tuesday.
The Raiders have an open locker room session scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. They are obligated to produce a quarterback to speak with the media, and Campbell has spoken on Wednesdays through the first two weeks. Coach Tom Cable won’t be available until practice is over.
Unless either Campbell or Gradkowski is produced, thereby making it clear who the starter is, the quarterbacks could be put in the position of not being able to answer questions about their status until after Cable makes his announcement.
Or the Raiders could just put the whole quarterback session off until Thursday. JaMarcus Russell spoke on Thursdays last year _ the only Raiders quarterback in memory who talked on Thursdays instead of Wednesdays.
In a conference call with Arizona writers, Cable declined to name a starting quarterback or answer a more general question about the number of teams which have switched or are consider switching quarterbacks entering Week 3.
More to come . . .

7/8-inch hands…Right-handed… 26 Wonderlic score.

ANALYSIS: A prospect with the physical tools to work with, Campbell improved his overall game and made a big jump up draft boards the past six months. Most effective in a short passing offense that does not rely on the vertical game. s pro-day

Other than that, Jason skipped the combine…
“As for Campbell, he finally went through much-anticipated workouts after skipping all of the drills at the combine.” (this was for his proday)

Gameplan against cards is simiklar to game plan against Rams. Stop the run. Stack the box.
On offense estaablish the run early and use play action and quick passes to WRs to open things up.
Toss a deep one or two to keep things honest.

I’m on the “Start Gradkowski” bandwagon, but it would not shock me in the least to see Campbell named starter. He gets one more chance on the road and if he does well can hopefully win back some fans before coming back to face the home crowd.

LOL @ #3.
I think Gradkow shuold start. He gives us the best chance to win this weekend and dang if he isn’t fun to root for.
Kid plays like someone kidnapped his family and he wins or they get taken out.
Bruce gives us the best chance to win this week for the same reasons Vick gives Philly.
to quote BSPN:
“The film study showed that Vick, who was sacked six times, was under constant duress because backup center Mike McGlynn had difficulty recognizing blitzes and then setting the protection. As a whole, the offensive line did not play well, and Reid realized then that Vick, with his mobility, would be a better fit to start rather than Kolb. There also was a concern that the offensive line’s play was so poor that Kolb would be exposed to another concussion, sources told Paolantonio.”
Besides Campbell looks like he still has a concussion.
September 22nd, 2010 at 10:29 am
I’m done with the JC vs BG thing for now. As i have stated several times i can see why we would start either. I just dont believe in giving up on a guy a game and a half into the season because the coach thinks he is on the hot seat. If there was doubt in his mind he should have opened up the comp at he end of camp. Just like he should have opened up the comp at LT and RG, but didnt.

I’ve honestly wondered this myself. Did he get a concussion and the team kept things hush hush? That hit by LaBoy in the pre-season was nasty. Forget a stinger, maybe Campbell couldn’t get up because he was knocked silly.

My money is on Beanie being VERY limited if he plays at all. Hightower is a concern, but nothing like Jackson or CJ. Aso on Fitz isn’t necessary, cause Anderson is worse than Boller. Breaston will probably get more yards/targets. And I actually thing our front 4 can put enough pressure on the QB.
Offensively, Don’t split carries evenly with Bush, DMAC is on a roll. DO go to some quick routes like 2nd half against rams regardless of the QB.
And I disagree, cut it loose, have some fun, get some more McClain style penalties.

He’ll make the RIGHT DECISION? A GOOD DECISION”??
WTF? When you bail on your appointed starter, after 6 quarters, it means you ALREADY MADE TWO BAD DECISIONS..the first one to anoint this apparent “failure” as your starter, and then to bail so quickly, at the half of a game separated by 3 points…
Tells the team, the fans, pretty much anyone paying attention, that you’re wishy washy, and a flake.
And when asked 3 DAYS AGO WHO YOUR STARTER IS? You had to wait until Wed to announce it?
In other words…”Let me check with who Al wants as starter, and I’ll get back to you.”

At this point, I think Campbell is basically damaged goods. He had huge potential at one point, but I think it’s been lost in the unstable mess that’s been his career.
Too many offensive co-ordinators, too many systems, too many hits have taken their toll and sapped him mentally. A person can only take so much of that before they just implode. I dunno what the straw that broke the camel’s back was–probably getting drilled in the pre-season or the first sack-fumble against Tennessee. Whatever it was, I think the best thing for Campbell may be to spend a season at a #2 and collect himself.

If you have to many players on your team that are guys who are growing and learning you will never win, you need a balance. How long are we going to wait for guys to come around? It has been to long, we need to win now. Grads may not be Tom Brady but if he lights a fire under people and wins games, who really cares? Sick of waiting.

I was thinking the same about Breaston. I think Nnamdi needs to worry about him. Fitz is banged up and Routt could cover him. Hightower needs to have an active spy on at him at all times. You basically limit them to the ability or lack thereof DA. Once this game gets to a ten point lead, ground and pound DMC in the second half, and have Scott, Shoughnessy, and Wimbley pin their ears back and meet the turkey in the middle of the backfield.

RedneckRaider,
The Raiders have to ruthlessly focus on stopping the run. When they don’t..they get beaten badly. This team has allowed almost anyone to run on them. Now is not the time to let up.
AS for Fitzgerald…you leave him open and he will exploit this team in a bad way. Routt and CJ are okay against middling receivers, an elite like Fitz will rip’em up. You paid Nnamdi for games like this one. Take Fitzgerald OUT OF THE GAME. If Breaston beats them..then we know what the 2nd round draft pick will be.
Front 4 pressure by itself is vanilla. The Raiders play the best defense when they fly around and move guys around….they just go that vanilla 4 rush and we will be in here on Sunday night gnashing our teeth again
Offensively, the Raiders should be a pound the rock team. 35 to 40 carries a game in my humble opinion. That’s plenty for TWO backs.
“Cutting it loose” is cool when you’ve got elite talent. This team does not. Play to the gameplan and be patient. Limit the 7-step drops

Next year’s draft is weak compared to 2010, so I’d have zero problem sending them a 2011 2nd rounder and a 2012 3rd rounder for a solid, proven #1 like Jackson.
Jackson, Murphy, DHB, Schilens (if/when healthy) is a hell of a receiving corps.
Besides, VJax is the one and only receiver I’ve ever seen consisently give Nnamdi fits. So let’s bring him in!
It’ll never happen, but whatever the case is, I’m just glad to see Jackson headed out of the AFC West.

DMC is no longer a secret, 2nd in the league in rushing will raise some eyebrows. Considering our unknown QB status, the Cardinals should be fully expecting a heavy dose of running and will be game-planning for 8-9 in the box and lots of gap discipline, especially on the outsides. Running DMAC at them early will get us nowhere, so they must open with some passing. Hue and Cable already know exactly who is gonna start at QB, and should be evaluating the best high-percentage passing plays that will work for whomever is the starter.
I predict some early dump-offs to Miller to get the ball rolling, a wheel route to Reece for the big strike and some come-back routes to DHB to get him comfortable. Depending on how well that works, they should be mixing in some runs throughout the first half, then finish with a heavy dose of McFadden in the 2nd half.

The Associated Press reported Monday that Ohio University has apologized to Ohio State University and its fans after Ohio U’s mascot attacked Brutus Buckeye on the field before their football game.
The student who acted as Ohio University’s mascot has also been banned from having connection with the school’s athletics.
From the AP:
The Bobcat first went after Brutus as the OSU mascot led the Buckeyes onto the field for the game.
Moments later, the Bobcat mascot climbed on the back of Ohio State’s mascot and rode him to the ground. The two then tussled in the end zone while fans booed.
There’s nothing like a good mascot tussle.
And thanks to YouTube, we have video, which is below. And you’ve got to give the Bobcat mascot credit: he literally charged the field into a sea of red to get that first hit in, then made sure to come back for seconds in the end zone. Priceless.
Brutus Buckeye seemed to be a bit perplexed as security stepped in.
The man in the Rufus mascot spoke to The Post, saying he didn’t care that he was fired from his position and that this matchup with Brutus Buckeyes was the sole reason he wanted the job.
“It was the whole reason I tried out (to be Rufus) last year,” Brandon Hanning said. “I knew we were going back to OSU this year, and I wanted to tackle Brutus.”
Mission accomplished.

BBB for game planner / play caller.
Jackson is no dim bulb. In fact he’s quite a bright bulb. I went to college with that guy. They didn’t sleep thru classes like some schools.
That said, he has never been a head coach at ANY level to my knowledge and is NOT going to be some panacea for the Raider org. Not just yet I would surmise. Al needs to hire a GM for cryin out loud.
Start Bruce, play hard beat the Cadinals.

Can any one tell me what the fuk Gradkowski has done to get all this love? Yeah he won a couple of games for us but his stats are not that good! I am willing to give hm a chance to see what he could do, but he should be on a short leash just like Campbell. If he does not deserve the benefit of the doubt neither does Gradkowski.

I can’t believe I will have to root for the Cornhuskers when they play Michigan. I hate them just a little less than Michigan…

JFB,
Campbell didnt run at the combine because his agents advised him not to run. But word is the guy ran 4.69 at Auburn.
On the other hand, Brucy Almighty is a pretty f’n strong. I am doing strength training now and anything over 300 is tough. Bruce doing 350 bench and 225×17 is quite bad a$$.
There is no way JC is a better athlete than BG.

Gotta think the Cardinals’ weakness is in their linebacking corps. Both Clark Haggans and Joey Porter are 33 and on the decline. Inside, there’s a giant hole there where Karlos Dansby used to be. You don’t let one of the top 3 3-4 ILBs in the league and not suffer a dropoff. Paris Lenon is a joke and Daryl Washington, who I really liked coming out of TCU, is still a rookie and thus apt to make mistakes.

Best thing we’ve gotten from Al Davis is the “Just win, baby” mantra.
Don’t care how ugly it is, all that matters in the end is the W.
If he still believes that, then he’ll let Cable start Gradkowski on Sunday. Simple as that. Gradkowski doesn’t always win pretty, but he wins.
September 22nd, 2010 at 11:04 am
If JC starts my prediction for the season is 5-11, and Cable gets his pinkslip in new years. If Bruce starts we have a shot at 8-8, Cable keeps his dignity and perhaps his job!

Jason Snelling put 129yds on the ground last week against the cards in the second half. Dmac could have another big day, and as long as we run the “Gradkowski” offense (shorter throws designed for YAC) regardless of who is starting we should be ok.
I am on record as saying I like Gradkowski’s fire and leadership style and would rather see him start, but a W is a W regardless of who is taking the snaps, and THAT is my main concern.

Is there a bigger flake in the NFL, than Cable?
Quote: ““I’ve heard if you have two running backs, like Michael (Bush) and Darren (McFadden), you have a tandem, but if you have two quarterbacks, it’s a controversy. There isn’t going to be a controversy. I’ll make a good decision, the right decision, and we’ll go from there.’’
Usual backasswards management
——————————————————-
Rick, how goes it, buddy? Been too long since we did this.
Obviously, I have to at least partially disagree.
I don’t think Cable is much of a strategist and at times I wonder how far up his @$$ his head really is, but we have to remember who calls the shots.
Cable, I doubt, is flip-flopping.
Pulling Campbell down only 7-3 at half shows who he wanted as starter all along.
He needs three days to convince Al he made another mistake.
Cable’s best decisions as Head Coach so far:
-Bench Russell
-Bench Russell again (after his admittedly nice GW TD v. Denver last year)
-Bench Campbell
Everyone in here says Cable’s trying to save his job. Well, of course.
If your stubborn, senile boss saddled you with employee that was garbage and continued to make mistakes, if you had even a little bit of pull and say in personel decisions, you wouldn’t demote him (or at least lobby to do so) ASAP to salavage a winning season or a profitable quarter, etc, etc.?

The Cardinals have a decent running game, and a statue QB that does not make decisions quickly. Sounds familar.
The defense needs to come out with heavy pressuer early, like the Titans did to us in Tenn. I see a starting front of Houston-Kelly-Seymour?-Scott, with Bryant getting the start if Seymour is still out. Get a ton of people into their backfield throughout the first quarter and try to shake them up and silence the crowd. After that start transitioning to a line of Houston-Henderson-Kelly-Shaugnessy with Seymour,Bryant and Scott rotating in. That will slow down their run game and keep our line fresh.
Branch needs to be spelled with Mitchell and Eugene late, and should not be given the one-deep spot early. Let Huff man centerfield.
Anyone know if W. McFadden is healthy yet, he was our best slot CB in the pre-season. I think he could make an immediate impact on this defense, as both CJ and Routt only look comfortable on the outside.

Good luck Jason Campbell,,a game & a half in and they already hate you. Just win Sunday & everybody will shut the hell up,,but if you lose,,,oh boy.
September 22nd, 2010 at 11:18 am
We all noticed that the play calling shifted to a shorter passing game in the 3rd quarter. One reason that has been noted was that the o-line couldnt hold up well enough to consistently run deeper routes. This is true , there is another reason that has not been mentioned yet.
JASON CAMPBELL’S DEEP PASING IN THE FIRST HALF OPEND UP THE UNDERNEATH QUICK TIMING ROUTS. DHB RAN PAST THE DB 3 OR FOUR TIMES, MURPHY WAS ALSO IN THE MIX DEEP. THIS WAS PERFECT STARTEGEY. THIS WAS NOT MERELY HALFTIME ADJUSTMENT IT WAS A CASE OF THROWING DEEP TO SET UP THE REST OF THE PLAYBOOK! THIS IS WHAT THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE VERTICAL PASSING OFFENSE IS ABOUT! THE DEEP PASSING ALSO GAVE DMAC PLENTY OF RUNNING ROOM! IF YOU PLAY UP ON OUR WIDES AND STACK THE BOX AGAINST THE RUN, ARE RECEIVERS WILL BURN YOU DEEP!
THIS IS ANOTHER REASON WE CANT MAKE A QB SWITCH NOW! GRADS IS A GAMER BUT HE DOESNT HAVE THE GOODS TO STRETCH THE DEFENSE VERTICALLY, WHICH WOULD HANDICAP OUR PLAY BOOK. A QB SWITCH NOW ALSO MEANS A PHILOSOPHY SWITCH, IN ORDER TO ACCOMMODATE BRUCE’S SHORT COMINGS.
WE CANNOT AFFORD THAT NOW AS WE ARE TRYING TO INSTALL HUE’S OFFENSE! SINCE BRUCE COULD NEVER BE THE QB OF THE FUTURE THAT MEANS IT PUTS ON HOLD OUR PLAN MOVING FORWARD WITH OUR NEW OC!
ANOTHER BENEFIT WAS WE PUT ON FILM DB’S GETTING SMOKED BY OUR WIDE OUTS, AND WORKING OUTSIDE THE NUMBERS, STRETCHING THE FIELD HORIZONTALLY AS WELL. THIS GIVES D-COORDINATORS NIGHTMARES, TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO MATCH OUR SPEED, AND STOP THE RUN!
OUR SITUATION IS UNIQUE, ITS NOT JUST ABOUT PLUGGING A GUY IN, LIKE IN OTHER CITIES.

Mistic1, post #125, Nice!
September 22nd, 2010 at 11:31 am
One thing tho, is I remember Bruce throwing long against Pitts last year. The guy can throw the deep ball if he has to, he is just not as good as some other QBs in the NFL at it.
September 22nd, 2010 at 11:34 am
I for one really liked the penalty by McClain. Thats his best play yet in a Raiders uniform. I wish the guy would get in there on the run plays tho, I still see him JOGGING way to much.

“a game separated by 3 points…”
—————-
GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!!! The score at the half was 7-3. Now I’m no mathemetician, but by my count that is FOUR (4) points NOT THREE as you so errantly stated.
Four points IS NOT three PERIOD!!! ARRRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH!
