Jackson’s epic non-answer
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010 at 12:20 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Offensive coordinator Hue Jackson took a minute and 50 seconds and 368 words to not answer the question of who would start Sunday at quarterback Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, Jason Campbell or Bruce Gradkowski:
Q: Who’s your starting quarterback?
Jackson: Oh gosh, I knew that would be the first hot question off the hill. That decision truly hasn’t been made just yet. I’m sure at some point in time Coach Cable will get around to you guys today. Obviously, I think that’s what everybody wants to focus on. Hopefully, we’re also focusing on our game this week because that’s the most important thing we have going. Let me just go back for a second since I know we’re talking about it. This past week’s game at halftime I made a decision to go in and talk to our head coach about making a switch at quarterback. OK. I have great latitude from our owner, Mr. Davis, and from Coach Cable, that anything that I think needs to be done on offense in order for us to score points that I’m able to do.
Obviously, we have a head coach and I run everything through him. But my job is to make sure that I put our offensive football team in the best situation to score points. I’ve told you guys, I’ve been telling you that since I’ve been here. That’s the number one goal for our offensive team. At the time, we were kind of stale. You guys watched it. I didn’t like the way we were playing, I didn’t like our energy, I didn’t like what we were doing. So every now and then you mix it up a little bit. I’ve been in so many different situations in that circumstance. I think it’s unfortunate because everybody wants to put, well it’s on Jason.
We all know the quarterback gets a ton of blame, he gets a ton of credit. But I think it’s 11 men playing on offense that have to execute at a high level in order for you to have a chance to play. It was very fortunate Bruce went in, rallied us and obviously we went on to win the game. That’s the most important thing. The most important is that I’m standing here today with a big smile on my face because we won a game.
That’s the ultimate goal. The ultimate goal is winning. Now after that, now we’re going to move forward and do whatever we think needs to be done to go win this game in Arizona . That’s kind of where we are. I’m excited about playing down in Arizona . I used to coach there at Arizona State . Looking forward to seeing some old friends, there’s some guys that I know on that staff. That’s a great challenge for us.
More to come . . .

Translation:
We want to start Bruce and think he gives us the best chance top win, but the owner insists we go with Jason Plunkett. As a result, we need to babble on now about how we “switched it up a bit” and so forth so that it doesn’t appear to our “drops into a slide before defenders get near him” QB that we’ve lost faith in him–since he is going to be starting this week.
The reason we won’t come directly out and say JC is the starter is because Tom is doing his best apple-polishing and trying once more to change the old man’s mind on this.
Good day.
September 22nd, 2010 at 12:34 pm

Do you receive mail. Do you have UPS or FED X deliver you packages. Do you drive a car built in the US or foreign subsidaries. Do you go to the grocery store, and have a bagger and checker help you with your groceries. Do you contact any California State worker to assist you at the DMV or any other service. Do you
know most of your professors belong in a Union.
Your county disposal and water come from union members, I must stop phone call.

Johnson is 6 foot 6, 235lbs of pure muscle. He throws the ball a mile and runs like the wind. He doesnt turn the ball over. Johnson also is a 3 year starter plays a pro offense under former nfl head coach and pass happy o-coordinator Mike Sherman. We can pick him up in round 3 and use our first picks on the o-line.

Trust me Raider fans, I’m from the DC area and I love the Redskins, but now you see what we’ve seen for sometime now. Jason is a great guy, but as a football QB, he SUCKS… I have him out of the league in 2 years. He can’t read defenses, he has no pocket awareness, and he’s way to passive to be a starting QB in the league. Thank you Al for taking him off of our hands.

2011 not a good year to draft a QB. Jake Locker is the pick of the litter, yikes. We gots to sniff around Kolb and Vick, keep developing Campbell, inquire about QB’s with the other 31, cuz there is no help coming from the draft. Unless we get a miracle late round prospect like T.J. Yates or Ricky Stanzi to pan out.

I think people really need to be careful in what they ask for. Ask the Cardinals how the Dereck Anderson experiment is going. They probably wish they didnt dump Matt Leinart as fast as they did in which a lot of people on this blog is suggesting we do the same with Campbell. Bruce is cool but jeez,,the dump Jason campaign is getting ridiculous. If we wanna throw theories out there about the game then lets just say Bruce bennifited from McFadden’s explosion in the 2nd half which made the passing game a hell of alot easier. I know everyone has their preferrences at Qb, but remember,,,JaMarcus had 3yrs to get out of his slump,,we can atleast give Campbell 3 games to get out of his. If Jason wins Sunday all will be well again. Raiders-24 Cardinals-16

September 22nd, 2010 at 12:57 pm
Grads is by far the best we got at the position. And yeah, i understand now why he always had pretty good stat lines with Washington, he blows it in the first half and then checks his way down the field in the second half to get his % up. He has the tools to be good but doesn’t have the “IT” factor that grads got. Gradkowski knows how to use the talent Mr.Davis has supplied this team with..I have never hated on Davis Philosophy about speed and athleticism, he just takes a little longer to find the coaches that know how to use them…RAIDERS WIN AFC WEST THIS YEAR… WE HAVE THE MOST TALENTED TEAM IN THE DIVISION…QUOTE ME

At halftime of this Sunday’s game, maybe Hue will approach Cable about making a switch at RG. With Carlisle in their thee team seems stale, they don’t have any energy. Obviously, he has to run it through Cable, but Al gives him the latitude to make those kind of critical decisions about the offensive line.
September 22nd, 2010 at 1:09 pm
AL DAVIS MIND> History shows us, hes always had an eye for talent. These last 7 years we have been bad and that’s a given. The few years right after our loss to the Tampa bay Gruden’s (knowing our 8 offensive plays we ran from multiple formations with constant shifts to make it look good, but were able to do because we had Garner, Brown, Rice, Porter, Gannon….) That’s besides the point…When Davis started to go with the young philosophy a few years back i saw mad talent. I was even with J-Russ until the end boys..(And i still believe…wait never mind that’s the Davis coming out of me lol) THE POINT IS, Davis goes through points in the raiders existence where he gathers talent, through Drafts, finds guys via trade(this year i think Quentin Groves and Kamerion Wimbley were great pick ups)… People bust on him because yeah he does make a lot of mistakes, but WHO FU**N HASNT!! And some of those bad picks of his are finally starting to show up….FELLAS…WE HAVE A VERY GOOD GROUP OF GUYS HERE IN OAKTOWN….

Solid post Jmackraider12. Welcome to the blog.
According to Hue, Campbell flat out stunk it up out there. Grads is starting fellas. He’s a playah. Get over it!

Referring to your post 76, by the way. As for 96, Davis has been hit and miss. He’s terrible with QBs. I think the WRs will work out fine, as will DMAC. The D is getting better

This just in: The ultimate goal is winning. Apparently there was a consultation w/ Herman Edwards.

And people who are busting on Grads..lol..Sucks being wrong doesn’t it?? Truth be told you don’t need a 6,5 QB with a laser rocket arm to do good in this league. The second Grads came in last year and played well, i saw in him a Raider…And to be historically accurate….Dan Pastorini was the big name trade that Oakland made with Houston in the end of the stabler days….sounds like Campbell. Plunkett was the back up we signed the year b4…Bruce is more like a Plunkett in theory…And he does have a pretty nice arm for all you haters..Havent yet to see him in ANY GAME…ANY GAME.. make a really bad throw…or decision…
Campbell> Seems like more of a back up to me at this point…you see…along with a lot of the other guys in this blog who keep JC starting…I believe it too in a way, we wana see what we traded for right? RIGHT? But havent we seen enough over the last 7 years to be done with waiting on guys, sooner or later we are 3-8 and wishing we started grads the whole dang time..WE NEED TO WIN BOYZ…And Grads has the heart of a lion and the will to win, he has a commitment to excellence, me and my pop watch the games together every sunday( Love NFL sunday ticket, got it the year we got tuck ruled into getting rid of gruden lol) Hes a raider fan who has seen EVERYTHING, Lymonica to Stabler..STabler to Pastorini…PLunkett…Wilson..
THIS IS ALL past and doesn’t mean anything now, but Grads the guy…grad is the guy…

And yeah (try some reality)… Davis cant, and never will draft a great great QB that fits his model…He will put together a talented team, and then somehow find a QB…GRAD

Jerry thinks well thought out, informative, and articulate answer is a epic non-answer? Media is so lame these days. All they want are little sound bites.

Notice that he mentions his latitude with the owner before he mentions that he has latitude with the head coach. That, of course, stuck out to me most…and I find that very telling of the Oakland Raiders.
