Don’t expect McFadden vs. Chargers

News, notes and quotes from Wednesday’s practice session, open locker session, conference calls with Chargers coach Norv Turner and quarterback Philip Rivers, and press briefing with coach Tom Cable:

– Cable is vague enough on the status of running back Darren McFadden that it seems likely the NFL’s No. 2 back in terms of yards and scrimmage (554) and first downs (26) won’t be available to face San Diego.

McFadden didn’t practice, and was seen working with the heavy ropes at one point during warm-ups and drills.

Cable repeated the right hamstring pull wasn’t as bad as McFadden’s left hamstring issue which cost him three weeks, but it’s doubtful the Raiders would risk making the injury worse playing their most productive player only seven days after the original injury.

“We expect the turnaround to be much shorter, so we’ll see,’’ Cable said.

With Michael Bennett also missing practice with a hamstring injury, expect a heavy dose of Michael Bush and Rock Cartwright against the Chargers. Regarding bringing in another running back, Cable said, “We’ll see.’’

– Linebacker Rolando McClain’s absence was explained as “a loss in his family’’ by Cable.

“He should be back by some time tomorrow,’’ Cable said.

—Left guard Robert Gallery was moving well with the training staff and Cable said he was “close’’ to getting on the field and wouldn’t rule him out against San Diego.

After having missed three games and having no contact during that time, be very surprised if Gallery plays. More likely, he’ll get in some serious practice time and hopefully face San Francisco.

– When cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha says San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers is “fearless’’ he says it knowing Rivers is one of the few quarterbacks to challenge him in past years.

In the past three games, Rivers completed a 46-yard pass to Vincent Jackson (with Asomugha drawing a flag) to the 7-yard line to set up a touchdown, hit Jackson with a 15-yard scoring pass in last year’s season opener, and converted a third-and-long opportunity to Chris Chambers into the sun in 2008.

“There’s a great deal of respect there,’’ Rivers told Bay Area reporters by conference call. “At the same time you have to let plays develop and go through your reads. As a quarterback you can’t completely count out that option.’’

With Jackson sitting out the season because of a contract dispute, Asomugha could find himself with a lot of responsibility on Chargers tight end, who has 24 receptions for 386 yards (16.1 average) and six touchdowns in four games.

Rivers said he wouldn’t be surprised to see Asomugha on Gates.

Said Asomugha: “In the past three or four years, there have been games where I’ve been on him a good amount of time.’’

— Cable said linebacker Trevor Scott has been moved back to weak side linebacker because of the injuries to Quentin Groves (hamstring) and Thomas Howard (knee).

Matt Shaughnessy will become the starter at right end and take a lot more snaps.

— Chargers coach Norv Turner was 0-4 against San Diego and 1-11 against the AFC West as the Raiders head coach. In San Diego, he’s 6-0 against the Raiders and 15-4 in the division.

But good luck getting him to crow about it.

“It’s hard to beat a team in your division twice a year, so, yeah, it does feel good, but this Raiders team is doing good things, they’ve got a good rhythm offensively,’’ Turner said. “We were up there last year and had to win on the last play of the game. We know it’s going to be a heck of a challenge.’’

– Linebacker Bruce Davis fits into the current Raider mold of linebacker _ players who have the pass rush skills and physicality of defensive ends who are playing off the line of scrimmage.

“Kamerion’s (Wimbley) a backer then a rusher. Trevor’s a backer then a rusher,’’ Cable said. “So you kind of have the same thing here. Quentin Groves, same thing. He’s a backer then he’s a rusher. I think that hybrid type guy just adds another one to that group.”

The question still to be answered is whether the hybrids can play in space in terms of making one-on-one tackles and covering receivers.

— Davis said he was surprised to learn some of the long-standing employees of the Raiders remember him from the days when his father Bruce played for the Raiders from 1979 to 1987.

“I was really young. I left here when I was 2 years old,’’ Davis said. “I don’t have much memory of that but I’ve run into some people here and they seem to remember me when I was a little kid. It’s a little strange for them to see me without a diaper on.’’

Having been drafted by Pittsburgh (and cut) and gone through indoctrinations with New England, Denver and San Francisco without sticking, Davis said he’s a quick study with a playbook.

Cable was offensive coordinator at UCLA when Davis was a dominant defensive end. He thinks Davis can contribute on special teams immediately.

– Right tackle Langston Walker believes the offense has responded to quarterback Bruce Gradkowski’s high-energy style.

“He’s definitely a fiery guy and I think most quarterbacks, you want them to be the strong, silent type,’’ Walker said. “But Bruce will go out there and mix it up. He doesn’t always slide, which isn’t the greatest thing, but it just shows you something. Shows you about his character.”

– Gradkowski said his right shoulder was fine and he met the media as the starting quarterback. He was listed as being “limited’’ along with tight end Zach Miller (hip), and linebacker Ricky Brown (hamstring).

Those who did not practice were Gallery (hamstring), John Henderson (stress fracture), linebacker Travis Goethel (lower back), Groves (hamstring), Howard (knee), cornerback Walter McFadden (hamstring) and cornerback Jeremy Ware (ankle).

Henderson’s stress fracture was apparently diagnosed Monday, and according to Cable, is a “three to six week’’ deal from the time of the diagnosis.

“It’s not a bad deal, but because he’s a big man, it tends to sometimes take longer, so we’ll see.’’

It’s amazing how now that Grads has the job, all we here about is how the OL, receivers and defense suck. Nobody ever mentioned the supporting cast last year when JR had the job and the same receivers were ROOKIES! What a joke!

Was the team in position to make a chipshot and win? yes or no? How do we know if Arizona were down 4 points they wouldnt go for that 4th down rather than punting the ball back to us?

The game came down to a chipshot and we missed it. You’re just a hater. Get over it.

How come other teams in the league bring in players and the Raiders don’t do ANYTHING? Vikings get Moss, Saints get a new kicker, Miami has a horrible special teams game and they fire the ST coach, yet the Raiders? Starting “run stopper” goes down they do NOTHING. Kicker blows another game winner? NOTHING (except tell him they “love him”)

I keep coming here hoping beyond hope Al Davis will pull the trigger on something ANYTHING to improve the team, but yet again NOTHING!

Soooo sick of this losing crap and yet Al does NOTHING!!!!!!!!

Gradkowski – all heart, all fire. Great to see.

Does anyone have his 4th down stats? I know he has more attempts that you’d like at converting 4th down, but one thing I notice is that he is so fearless about it. He doesn’t play it like it’s any other down, but he doesn’t get nervous either. I don’t remember many other QB’s convert on 4th down as much as he does. Not just this year, but since I’ve seen him on the Raiders.

If everyone on this team played with the passion and intensity of Bruce Gradkowski, we’d be sitting at 3-1 right now. That’s why he is the QB, and not Jason Campbell.

Just got off the phone with Al.

Had a long talk with him. After pleasantries, I asked him how he felt about the QB situation. He is very cool with Gradskowski. Likes him alot, likes his tempo.
Said he could of saved millions if Herreras psycic hadn’t told him we’d be getting Russel. Said he could of paid Bruce the league minimum, and had money left over.

I told him about all the Grad haters here on this blog and he knew of it. He said they would get over it.

I asked him many questions, but the thing that struck me the most was his concern for his defense. Said Seymor was to be the anchor, work with the rooks and all, but that quite hasn’t panned out yet. Couldn’t believe Moss was back with the Vikings. He said ‘funny old world, isn’t it?’

There were things he told me not to repeat, so I can’t. But I will say he is tired of Cable and Marshall moving guys around. He doesn’t like that. He realizes todays players are one dimensional.

On a parting note, I asked him who he liked in this years baseball play-offs. He asked me if the Brooklyn Dodgers made it to the Series, and I said ‘no, but maybe next year.’

He thought that was pretty funny, because he said he was thinking the same thing.

    JHill,

Where TF have you been? Didnt he rescue JC and put the lead on the board? Didnt he convert that critical 3rd down to Murphy to seal the win? I do remember that we took a knee to win the game. So where have you been? Your argument is weak.

Also SD has 2nd best D overall in the league, 4th vs the pass, 7th vs the run.

On Offense, they are 1st overall, 3rd passing, 10th rushing.

By contrast, we are 3rd vs pass and 31st vs run.

Offense we are 20th passing, 6th rushing.

But if the Charger W/L pattern continues this week, they would be set to lose right?

KC, Cinci, Pitt, Rams, Cards, and Texans.

  • beach

They are set to lose, by a 24-17 count. Murphy will score a TD, Bush will score a TD, and Zach Miller will score a TD. Just pray the defense/special teams don’t give up a BIG PLAY!

I’m confident McClain will be a stud MLB. I understand he’s the “quarterback” of the defense. But shouldn’t guys like Seymour and Nnamdi be the leader(s) of the defense, especially with the kid being a rookie? Can somebody tell me if they agree with me, or am I off the mark?

  • DaRayduh

    Tempo.

That is what Al told me. Tempo.

When was the last time you saw a Raider qb that had tempo? It’s been awhile. A long while.

And no more JR apologies. The guy had a golden egg and he stepped on it. Never had tempo………

    Campbell got no tempo.

Bruce has tempo. Get over it.

  • EMRaiders

I was thinking the same thing the other day. That’s why Seymour was brought in, or at least one of the main reasons why. For veteran leadership and example. Nam is too soft spoken to be a fiery leader, but he should at least hold some people accountable. Who knows what goes on behind close doors, but judging by the product on the field, there seems to be a lack of leadership on the D.

I’m sure others have noticed, but every time the D gives up a big play there’s a lot of finger pointing by the players on the field, but not someone gathering everyone together to get ready for the next play.

  • rossee

Question? What do these names have in common? Nnamdi, Seabass, Woodson, Allen, Mosebar, *Wisniewski, Tim Brown? Answer. The only number one draft picks that have worked out since 1980. Technically Wis was a second round pick since Raiders didnt have a number one during that draft year. Something else in common? During the heyday of the early to mid 80’s Ron Wolf handled the majority of the scouting and the draft prior to free agency. In the late 90’s early 2000’s? Bruce Allen was aboard with Jon Gruden handling the personnel choices as well as free agency. Uncle Al. Give it up. If your idol offensive guru Sid Gilman (an icon in his time) were still alive, he would tell you to wake up and get with the times, turn the football operation over to a young dynamic football guy. An no, your last will and testament stating that the Raiders will continue to run a 4-3 with a deep free safety and no blitzing is unenforceable. Raider fans, thats it in a nutshell. Period. End of story

You are ON the mark. Al said todays players are one dimensional. The ones that have leadership are few these days. There are many who lack it. Al knows. He is very old school. He was hoping Seymor would be the guy. Hasn’t worked out yet.

  • RaiderRetribution

I have a strong inclination that the family member Mr. McClain lost has a lot to do with his lack of intensity on the field, (or rather overcommitting to a paly).

As we recall he had to leave during pre-season to be with his family, so this must be something that has been lingering in the back of his mind for awhile now.

God, family, U.S.A., then the Raiders; I’m confident Rolando has his priorities. He will be a quality MLB for the Raiders and when it comes to death in the family of Raider personnel, Al Davis steps up, he always has as Mr. Long testified to multiple times.

I can’t believe that you think DHB should’ve caught that pass that was clearly behind him. If the ball is thrown to the sideline it’s a catch……….period

Now the pass to Murphy I ttally agree with no excuse he should’ve caught but I wish Grads had gone back to DHB on the 9 route because we probably wuld’ve scored he had his man beat by 5 yards.

I think that gameplan hujack put together was outstanding we’re just not quite there yet. But it was obvious to me that most teams wont be able to stop this offense in that formation. It spreads the defense out and takes advantage of all 3 zones all the QB has to do is take what they give him. And mix in the running game consistently we’ll average 30 points a game.
