McClain among those not practicing

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, October 6th, 2010 at 1:13 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Middle linebacker Rolando McClain was not present when the Raiders broke from warmups and drills to start Wednesday’s practice in preparation for their AFC West game against the San Diego Chargers.

McClain was not part of the Raiders’ lengthy injury list going in and coming out of their 31-24 loss to the Houston Texans. He was not seen during the Raiders’ open locker room period Wednesday.

With Quentin Groves (hamstring) a spectator and Thomas Howard (knee) not present, the Raiders were going through the paces with Ricky Brown in the middle, Kamerion Wimbley at strong side linebacker and Trevor Scott at weak side linebacker.

Scott finished last season on the weak side but was returned to defensive end before the last preseason game. Brown was back on the practice field after missing the last two games with a hamstring pull.

Other players who weren’t present or weren’t practicing were defensive tackle John Henderson (who was on crutches in the locker room), left guard Robert Gallery (hamstring), running back Darren McFadden (hamstring), running back Michael Bennett (hamstring), linebacker Travis Goethel (lower back) and cornerback Walter McFadden (hamstring).

Gallery, Walter McFadden and Goethel were all working on a separate field with a member of the athletic training staff, a sign they were both literally and figuratively getting closer to the playing field.

Safety Hiram Eugene joined Brown in returning to the field. Wide receivers Louis Murphy and Darrius Heyward-Bey were both practicing.

More to come following coach Tom Cable’s post-practice press briefing . . .

oh crap more drama. Need to find out the whole story about the texting part. Did he get into a confrontation with the coaching staff and took off? We dont need this right now.

all this crybabys crying about grad need to stop. the man has heart, no other qb with the exception of peyton could throw behind that line. grad moves the ball puts up point and play with fire, cambell would have folded under the pressure in the houston game. quit crying and at least apprieiate that the offense can score and that finally there not the unit holding us up, the D needs to man up though.

Maybe McClain went to a Tibetan mountaintop to train with some 900 year old kung fu guru.

Both Stevie Brown and Goethel seem to display the instinct to find the ball. Would love to see them in the game at some point.

“Some players showed disregard for authority. In one ugly incident, which occurred a few days before the Raiders’ 34-21 loss to the Cowboys on Nov. 19, defensive end Anthony Smith attacked his position coach, Floyd Peters, after Peters questioned his play during a meeting. Witnesses say the 6′3″, 265-pound Smith knocked the 60-year-old Peters to the ground while other players and coaches watched. Yet Smith started against Dallas, which disgusted many of his teammates.”

I’ve resisted this idea since it first came up, but it keeps sounding better.

But he’s starting to play well in Washington now and Shanahan has been giving him props, so that ship may have sailed.

I wonder how the uber-Al sycophant, Hererra would spin the Shanarat/Marty dominance of the Raiders? The Chargers will likely run their streak to 15. Pathetic..Just Pathetic.

  • 89052RAIDER

Marty Schottenheimer prepared for the Raiders by telling his players, “If you hit them in the mouth, they’ll quit.”

someone please tell me what the issue is with this football team?

I get it that Al Davis has a major influence over this team but how bad can his influence be? Every time he is mentioned by even the harshest of his critics he is heralded as a football genius. So what gives?

Everyone says that he has this unrivaled passion for the Raiders to be successful so where is the misstep? What is he not doing?

What good would a GM really do for the team and how would it make that much of a difference?

Is it his inability to draft well? Are players being evaluated incorrectly?

How does Oakland seem to field all of these players that are only practice squad worthy for every other team? (i. e. Dan Loper, Todd Watkins) I need some answers BAD!

  • ArmChair GM

I love the Nation and I respect everyone’s comments here but a lot of people here still don’t get it.

    (Now time for my rant…)

All this talk about QB’s is just plain ridiculous!

The truth is we will never know WHAT WE HAVE at the QB position until we get some stability and talent on that offensive line.

I keep seeing all this chatter about Gannon and Brees and all sorts of foolishness. But no one besides myself and maybe one other person has pointed out who Gannon had on that offensive line when he was here.

He had PRO BOWLERS and ALL PROS! He had Wisniewski, he had Barrett Robbins, he had Lincoln Kennedy! On top of that he had Tim Brown and Jerry Rice who in their old age were playing at a much higher level than what we have right now with any of our wide receivers.

Please stop talking about QB’s! Stop it! If Gannon was behind our current offensive line he would be having many of the same struggles that both Campbell and Grads are having. And taking the SAME HITS!

Remember what happened when Barrett Robbins and Lincoln Kennedy retired? That’s right Gannon got hit and his career ended.

Get a clue you guys please. Cable is an idiot. He is solely responsible for that O-line and has failed miserably.

I’ve been saying it since before the season started and will say it again..Fix the O-line…we win the division!

Fix the O-line and get a REAL NT…we stop the run and make it past the wild card game and to the AFC divisional playoff game.

That’s light years ahead of where we have been. But unfortunately that doesn’t appear to be happening any time soon.

Stop complaining about QB’s. We have way bigger problems on our team than that.

    …………

Al drafts athletes, not football players. Al believes chemistry is overrated, so the head coach doesn’t get to hire his staff. Coaches are given a scheme developed by Al and told to make it work.

No way. Not after this much losing. Accountability is an issue on a down slide because you can get away with passing the buck. They’ve been too bad for too long for anyone in that organization to look in the mirror and say it isn’t my fault.

What’s with the Hamstrings? Can someone there do their job please? When the D is out there… get someone working on those hammys… Anyway, the Raiders will be FOREVER building that O-line. Here’s hoping Bruce Campbell will get where he needs to be next year. Veldheer is adequate… Move Mario to backup pronto. Not getting Oher when they had the chance or Ngata… It’s costing them big time.

DHB has been targeted 31 times, he’s caught only 11 of those passes. That’s only a 35 percent success rate. You cant be successful in anything with those numbers. Why do they force this kid down our throats it’s perfectly clear that he’s not ready. Last year I can remember when he sat out we were better, he’s improved but has along way to go. Cable knew that Chaz was fragile and DHB can not catch but decided to take his chances and set hiself on fire. It’s time to go Cable your clueless as a coach and can’t evaluate talent. You said that Morrison and Howard were the reasons we couldn’t stop the run last year, doesn’t look like it now does it. You had Scott playing OLB in OTA’s and training camp what happens the week before the season, you put him back at end. You draft Valdeer and Cambell and they have played LT basically there entire careers. You move Cambell to guard and start Veldeer at center in our opener on the road. He couldn’t even get the shotgun snap to the quarter back. This loss will not define our team, this loss will not define our team, it’s not Jano’s fault for missing the kick, this loss will not define our team. Save it Cable and get the hell out of Oakland we deserve better. I’m all for bringing back Gruden at this point, at least we will have an identity and also the correct accountability. He wouldnt’t shove DHB down the Raider Nation throat.

The Raiders need to replace Trevor Scott with Matt Shannessy #77 and move Trevor to linebacker. Everytime Matt is in the game something good happens. He has that “it” factor.

  • RaiderReggie

I want to see some nastiness out of Rolando McClain. He’s got that laid back(JaMarcus Russell) demeanor in which I don’t like for a middle line backer. I want to see some “fire” out of my MLB just like Ray Lewis or Patrick Willis. McClain always talk about he saw all this strong competition at Alabama. Well, somebody need to tell him this is the NFL not Alabama. McClain need to take control of that huddle and bring some heat.

  • magic man

The training/conditioning staff is doing something very wrong. I have never seen so many hamstings go on one team before.

  • bskillla

If we were 3-1 you would not see as many injuries, these guys are trying to stay healthy and hope to get the hell out of here. Were you at the game Sun, 32,000
stadium was half empty. This has to be devestating as a player.
