Raiders embellish Schottenheimer quote

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, October 6th, 2010 at 11:30 pm in Oakland Raiders.

What do you do if you’re trying to get your team fired up and don’t have quite enough verbal ammunition?

Use a little creativity. Make it stronger. Edit.

Hell, make it up if you have to.

Judge for yourself.

Here is what the Raiders had posted in their locker room Wednesday from former Chiefs and Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer as a means of motivation for Sunday’s game against the San Diego Chargers, citing a recent Sirius radio interview:

“The one constant you can count on in playing the Raiders is that they don’t finish. They don’t finish plays and they don’t finish games. I always told my players that if they kept playing hard against the Raiders, they would eventually fold. That is why I knew we would always win. That is still the perception around the league.”

Many words were either underlined or capitalized to enhance their effect.

If you’ve talked to any former Schottenheimer player about their days preparing for the Raiders, this is actually pretty mild. He was fond of telling them the Raiders would back down the moment you “hit ‘em in the mouth.”

But Schottenheimer didn’t go even remotely that far Monday during his Sirius radio show. Here is what he said, with beat writer Steve Corkran listening to the segment on the Raiders and transcribing it word-for-word:

“Well, from my perspective, you know, I’ve always saw in that football team, they don’t finish plays very well. And I’m not going to sit here and tell you that, you know, that they don’t care, but I do think that losing over an extended period of time produces guys that tend to.

“They don’t finish plays the way you need to finish plays. And, in the National Football League, it’s all about how you finish whatever it is you’re doing, whether it’s on offense, defense or in the kicking game. And that was always the thing that I felt about the Raiders and why I felt we could always beat them is, that if you just go out and do your job and you do it and commit yourself to doing it for the entire contest, regardless how much time that is, go finish the thing, and they would find a way – I always would tell our players, if you just hang in there with the Raiders, they will find a way in the end to lose themselves.”

Asked about the Raiders surrendering 249 yards rushing, Schotteheimer said:

“I have always said that I would rather give up an 80-yard touchdown than have them take the ball and drive it 80 yards on you running it because, I promise what happened, if you throw an 80-yard touchdown pass, it’s probably one or two guys involved in the end result for you defensively. Somebody didn’t do their job, blew the coverage, whatever.

“When you have them take the ball and run the ball down the field on you for 80 yards, I’m talking about a sustained drive, what happens to you is that guys start standing around, looking to their right, looking to their left, ‘What’s going wrong? Why aren’t we getting this done?’ All of a sudden, they’re focused more on what’s wrong than what they’re supposed to be doing right.”

Schottenheimer has a well-documented dislike for the Raiders, and has put things in much stronger terms to players while preparing to play Oakland.

But read closely what he actually said in this case and try and find some fault with it.

You can’t. It’s all true.

As for the locker room version, well, Schottenheimer never said the word “fold,” nor did he say anything about it being the “perception around the league.”

Throwing a little extra fuel on the fire for bulletin board material wasn’t invented by the Raiders. Most coaches say they don’t use it, but chances are it happens every week over the course of the season for almost every team.

The interesting thing about the embellishment of Schottenheimer interview Wednesday isn’t that it gives any insight of what he thinks.

It’s that it tells how the Raiders view themselves.

Anybody dumb enough to buy that arbage Jerry is selling, well I guess you deserve it. Coaches are notorious for ploys like this when they know they have to get a win and they want to win this one bad. Marty himself was guilty of such ploys because they work, he would tell his troops that they Raiders were bullies and criminals and didn’t deserve to be in the league.

Everything you can think of, does anyone remember they rant that Harrison went on when Seymour was rumored not to want to come to Oakland how he said he would rather jump off a bridge than play here. Just who do you think that opinion came from?, Marty Shottenheimer. Marty has lied and embellished and done whatever it took to get his troops to beat the Raiders. He’s FAMOUS for it.

For this idiot writer to claim the Raiders embellished Marty’s crap is beyond stupid, in fact stupid and ignorant desn’t do it justice. Marty has long been maniacal in his imagination to fire up his troops. Anything you can dream up that he might say probably isn’t close to his rants in front of his team. You’d have thought your life depended on your beating the Raiders.

Anyone who’s even heard some of the stuff that came out of that Nazi’s mouth concerning the Raiders would know that. You guy’s are such freakin’ sheep for whatever Jerry is selling.

Aso is gone in 2012 take it to the bank, just like Woodson. We let him play out his contract and walk to. we have some young guys, put them in. No playoffs this year anyways.
    CB Mcfadden
    SS Mitchell
    FS Brown
    CB Ware
    OLB Scott
    MLB McClain
MLB Goethle i know its not spelled right
    OLB Howard
    DE Houston
    NT ?? Heard??
    DE Seymour
then next year try to replace Seymour, Heard, Howard
lets just see if the young guys can play.

  • HayesDaze37

McCain’s shown all the ability he was supposed to have…he’s just getting caught out of position, and he’s slow to recognize/react to the play as it unfolds.

No matter what he says about being prepared for the NFL while at Bama, he’s still a rookie. He’ll make the occasional great play, but he’s going to make rookie mistakes also. 1-in-50 or so rookie LB’s play like good journeymen instantly…and we all know we’re expecting McClain to do that.

Hopefully, the game will really come into focus for McClain by mid-season. We already know he can play at this level, now he needs to play at a higher level to earn his keep. I say he gets it together soon…he’s way too talented and smart not to.

BHP, what are you talking about? I gotta get back at you later but….huh?

Jerry posted what the Raiders wrote, then what Marty wrote and it was different.

It was more severe and insulting. Whether it be for motivational purposes or whatever, obviously it wouldn’t be said if there wasn’t a problem. Words like ‘fold’ being introduced.

Jerry just put in the facts and drew the ONLY logical conclusion that could be made.

Sam is a friend of mine, I know he has heart. Its ture he dosen’t have elite talent, but he does well on special teams. Mitchell also has heart he just plays to aggessive, good coaching could turn him into a good player. We don’t have good coaching.

BHP’s in a fighting, ranting mood.

JMcD hurt your feelings one too many times, Priest? Seems like you wanna tangle with somebody over it. Why not tangle with Jerry, if it’s Jerry you’ve got the beef with?

I would say the Raiders paraphrased, rather than embellished. They did what Marty could never do himself in fewer than 1000 words — get to the point. I’d have to scan some old footage/read some reports (which I won’t do), but I bet Marty’s used every word in that locker room posting in a previous Raiders rant.

A football team isn’t held to the same journalistic standards as a newspaper is. And yes, BHP, Jerry McD carries his journalistic standards well — even if you don’t like him for not seeing things your way.

I actually remember when you two stubborn Rocks of Gibralter could have a dialogue in here without calling people names. Now, it’s nothing like those peaceful days of yore. It’s sad, the loss of common sense and logic over the years.

Oh yeah…a lack of the ability to understand another’s point (or willingness to) needs to go in there also. That puts you into a special category on this board — and you KNOW who your peers are on that list!

    ==================
    Never.
Raiders will never get an established coach to come and work for Al.
Why would they? Who would possibly want to deal with that old codger butting in on everything?

Only ones who would, would be former HC’s, since fallen, hoping for a chance to get back in the circle, or assts, wanting the chance to get their toe in that same circle.
Once established, they are gone with the wind.

Hayes call it whatever you wish I aint pissed off at all. Maybe it’s you that can’t except someone else’s opinion. I said I think Jerry is full of crap always have and will until he changes my mind. Only HE can do that. I disagreed with HIM no one else.

He made a statement of fact that the caches of this team feel a particular way about this team based on a flimsy incident, a ploy and people are dumb enough to except that without thinking. I think that is also ignorant.

Now if that bothers you because you’re one of those people, if the shoe fits wear it…….period

  • HayesDaze37

  • HayesDaze37

First…is it ACCept, or EXCept? If you’re going to lay down an argument, let’s at least understand the point you’re trying to make.

Second…JMcD never made any “statement of fact” about what the coaches on this team feel. He stated the RAIDERS feel a certain way about themselves. Well, that’s his well-informed perception…and it’s the perception of a lot of people on this very board.

There’s a very big difference in what JMcD actually wrote, and the overblown statement you THINK he wrote (but won’t go back and re-read).

Mellow out, man…it’s a great afternoon.

Yeah, LMFAO at your crash and burn, hypocrite.

The Raiders have 78 blackouts in 122 home games since moving back to Oakland in 1995.

63% of Raider home games are blacked-out, not including all of them this year.

Does that sound like competent management to you?

  • HayesDaze37

Oh yes…the “I couldn’t go to the Super Bowl, but someone else did, so I got screwed-over” rant.

    Chargers at Raiders

Florio’s take: The Chargers are continuing to dig out of their funk, just as the Raiders are settling in to theirs. The only question about this one is whether it will be the last one of Tom Cable’s career.

  • http://www.pro-football-reference.com/ KoolKell

Rosenthal’s take: Where did all that offseason optimism about the Raiders go? This looks like the same old team. The defense was supposed to carry the day, but they’ve been among the league’s worst. Bruce Gradkowski has improved the passing attack, but the offensive line still struggles. This is a game Oakland desperately needs to stay relevant, and they usually play the Chargers tough at home. They also usually find a way to lose. Mike Tolbert Fever: Catch it!

    Rosenthal’s pick: Chargers 24, Raiders 20.

  • HayesDaze37

BHP — This is a blog…the man is SUPPOSED to tell us his opinion, it’s part of the job. And…he never said anything about what the COACHES feel about the team — which was YOUR claim.

So, BHP, my friend — You are guilty of what you say Jerry’s guilty of…giving an opinion as fact.

    That qualifies you for a:

HYPOCRITE ALERT HYPOCRITE ALERT HYPOCRITE ALERT

  • Norco Bob

Old Kell,…you seem to blame management for blackouts,..which of course you know I love,…but is it management thats not going to the games or fair weathered fans like you that dont go to games?…its clear,..the reason the games are blacked out is because people like you dont buy a ticket and go to the games,..simple as that,…if a fan only goes when things are great and they are winning,..thats weak,…and old kell, youre as weak as they come.

OK, BHP, I’ll bite — Where does he state that the Raiders coaches feel that way about the team? He doesn’t.

So your statement about what JMcD actually wrote is really misleading, isn’t it? If the answer is yes (and it is), and you won’t go back and either amend your statement “of fact,” or admit you’re basing an argument based on your personal feelings (as opposed to what he REALLY wrote), then you are doing no better than the very guy you’re criticising.

Where in this “discussion” did I say one hypocritical thing? Methinks you and Richie need to look up the actual definition of hypocrite. Here’s a hint: Learning the meanings of words BEFORE using them in sentences is a really wise thing to do if trying to make a point.
