Raiders revive oldie but goodie

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, October 6th, 2010 at 11:38 am in Oakland Raiders.

Former Chiefs and Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer, a Raider-hater from way back, fielded a quesiton recently on his Sirius radio show about the Raiders inability to finish and resurrected an old theme, which was dutifully printed and placed in the locker room where players could read it.

With some words in bold face and underlined for emphasis, it read:

“The one constant yuo can count on in playing the Raiders is that they don’t finish. They don’t finish plays and they don’t finish games. I always told my players that if they keep playing hard against the Raiders, (the Raiders) would eventually fold. That is why I knew we would always win.

That is still the perception in the league today.”

He left out the part about “hitting them in the mouth.”

More to come .. .

    The truth hurts doesn’t it….

However, if I was a coach for the Raiders, I would print that and put it in our locker room. And if I was a player, I would be so fired up that I would be ready to knock somebody out come game time. This is great motivation, and all great players would use it as such.

    Gosh I hate Schotty…

    NE,

    LOL!

Started in the preseason. Our drunk arsee announcers kept calling him Gardowski in his first game back. Kinda emphasized my point at the time to JFB what the organization thought of him.

Of course he went on later that night to predict Gardowski would be starting by halftime of week 2, and I think you know the rest.

  8. DMAC Says:

Asked Wednesday if he’s considering a quarterback change, 49ers coach Mike Singletary insisted “I’m nowhere near that point.”
He probably would be if he had a better option behind Alex Smith. Smith’s yards-per-attempt average of 6.1 ranks 27th in the league, and he’s tied with Shaun Hill for the most interceptions (7) in football. David Carr is the backup, however, and would add no noticeable dimension to the 49ers’ offense.

    Lets trade them Jason Campbell.

  9. dB Says:

Too many track stars in a locker room collecting checks instead of playing football will do that to a team. They can all run fast, especially to the bank, but can’t seem to catch, block or tackle worth a damn. Here’s hoping they finally take that to heart and start proving the haters wrong.

And i have noticed that in every game grad has played he has become progressively more mature with our offense, his turnover rate should go down game by game, in the end hes a slinger, but he will realize his weapons underneath are just has important as his weapons are vertically, and that has shown game by game..
    ///////////////////////////////////////////////

I have noticed the opposite. He played great against the Rams, pretty good in Ariz, and pretty poorly last week (against the worst pass D in the league). In that rams game he got DHb and Murphy involved and they performed, same in Ariz (though he did force a lot of passes), but last week the WR’s were no involved at all and he made even more bad throws. I think the constant hits are having an affect on him and teams are just game planning to take away what he likes to do.

  12. DMAC Says:

    FK U Marty!!!!
    hahahahahaha

  13. CJ Legend 34 Says:

All we can do is use that for motivation to prove him wrong.

  14. EMRaiders Says:

About the hammy issue, I brought up a question a few days back. It seems like we are always having issues with this. Every season. So I was wondering if it had to do with conditioning, or is it that our players are all athletes that eventhough they are fast and athletic, they are not really built for football.

  15. severeraiderz Says:

If it takes what another coach says to motivate these players Tom Cable should be publicly tarred and feather then fired. I lobbied to keep him for consistency purposesbut right now he isn’t worth the golf balls that Al davis uses for his walker.

trade Tom Cable for a Hover ‘Round.

  16. J Hill Says:

Until we get consistent impact play from the S positions, we are not going to win many games.

Schotty’s comments are a direct shot at the defense, and we all know it to be true!

what about the front seven on D ???

LOL, good ole marty, he sure hit the nail then, the problem is that it still is true..

  21. CJ Legend 34 Says:

I will even go one better.

I WOULD PUT JASON CAMPBELL IN THE GAME!!!!!

Jason should be starting because we don’t know what he can do. I think he could make the throws once he is in rythm. They gave up on hik to quick.

Grads is a back up what you see is what you get. Like I said B- QB on his very best day! He has no timing to his play he is just a sand lot QB with a big heart.

With Campbell we will never know unless he getas on the field. Yeah, he might get killed w/ our o-line, but he may just catch fire and actually make our offense look like an offense. But I know they need Grads in there rolling out right 8 out of 10 times using half of the field to make a play. Simple for the defense to figure out. DHB and Murphy need to learn how to catch a fast ball 15-20 yards down the field using their speed. Not these lob passes Grads is throwing to them. Of course they are essy to catch but we need to get down the field and score. The best QBs in the league have timing down pat with their WRs and they put velocity on the ball. Grads just can’t do that!

  22. priesttj Says:

Yeah, Jerry Marty put that up before we went to our 5th SB and just how many SB’s has Marty coached in?

Back to the Houston game. That team is reallly good on offense and I wish we had played a lot better on defense to see where we really are. That was a great test but for some reason it’s obvious we didn’t answer
so as a result I’m still wondering just how good or bad for that matter this team really is.

I was upset about the offense at the game, but when I thought about it it was the perfect offense we were running but we just don’t have what it takes to get the best out of it. So maybe we should’ve been in a run oriented offense more.

I know Grads is still growing but man we could’ve and should’ve victimized that defense a lot more. I’m hopinh When Chaz is in there with DHB and Murphy our 3 wides pistol offense is more effective. Because we saw how defenses will struggle covering ZM in the formation now can we get the WR’s involved better?

I’m seeing that with a little better QB play we may be able to average as much as 25 points a game. We’re averaging 20 right now IMO we’re leaving on average 7-10 points on the field per game. Just due to inexperience at the QB position.

  23. EMRaiders Says:

rockstar, stop it. we would take them in heartbeat, but that’s not the point. lol…

  24. Jmackraider12 Says:

hahahaa this is the best thing that could have happened for our team, lol, put this in the locker room… lets go rip rivers in half..

  25. J Hill Says:

    Uuhhhh..

what about the front seven on D ???

    —————————————————–

Those guys are going to make mistakes, as do all front 7’s. We can’t have their mistakes turning into to TDs. 5-15yds, live to fight another day.

And where are the offsets for the TDs they give up? No ints or impact plays from them?

I’m a Huff supporter, but he’s playing like trash AT TIMES. Unfortunately 1 mistake by him = 7 pts.

  26. CJ Legend 34 Says:

By the way I think our biggest problem is the defense. We get gutted like a fish up the middle every game. WHy we never went after a real nose guard or tackle in our scheme is beyond me. They knew Henderson was not that guy when they picked him up. LBs can’t do anything until we clog up the middle and well…our safties can’t tackle.

  27. RaiderRockstar Says:

the rivalry isn’t the same with Haley, McDaniels or Turner … but I still expect all those teams to steamroll us this year

Mistic1, lol probly only one other guy running a route on that quadruple coverage pic, it was a play action max protection that was called
    ——————
Mistic1, You must first understand what you are looking at. He had two choices, throw it out of bounds or attempt to throw into tight coverage. Protection was breaking down around him. He chose the latter, same as a lot of other qb’s would do. It was not as bad a decision as you make it out to be.
    =============================================================

I get it max protection, but there was more than 1 reciever in the route, even if ti was the tight end or back leaking.

Regardless of how many recievers are there, you dont lob a wounded duck into quadruple coverage!

There is no excuse for that kind of bone headed play.

Please dont make his into grads vs. the back up, im only pointing out the mistakes that grads made. With better qb play we probably beat the texans. Even with our defense turning a sub par performance until the final 9 mins f the game.

  30. CJ Legend 34 Says:

True about teams game planning for him eventually they will try and take away his vision which is limited, but as far as him reacting to the hits, he threw more check downs/and quick stuff this game than any other game this year, miller with ten catches, and dmac/bush combined for around ten along with reece, he was facing mario williams, so he checks down more. I think that this is an improvement, eventually i think the turnovers will decrease(im always positive) lol..but whatever agree to disagree

I know some will get upset with this but I agree that teams are starting to gameplan him. The Texans secondary sucks but they knew that if they forced him to thrw down the field his success rate goes way down. They never play bump and run and against us they did. Because they didn’t want t give up those short outs and comebacks that he likes to throw. More teams will look at the film and if he can’t adjust they’ll just take away our wideouts becaue they know he can’t hit them deep. He has to show that if the press he will send it downfield accurately. So we’ll see.

Its not the camp, its not the schemes, its not davis, its a lack of execution by proffesional players.

They know d@mn well he threw into triple coverage and that is never acceptable. You throw the ball away!!! At the half he held on to the ball way to long. He should have threw it our of bounds. Instead it cost us a field goal right at the half.

Since I was at the Houston game I was able to watch the wideouts a little more than I can on TV.
They were bad against a bad DB lineup. Maybe they were hurt or whatever but they were getting NOTHING done. You supposed Raider fans ought to be thanking your lucky stars that Bruce Gradkowski was hitting Zach and that McFadden and eventually Bush were getting some yards. Or it would have been 45-6.
I don’t know why no one in this organization didn’t get an insurance policy for Chaz. Stup!d. Murphy and DHB are just not ready to be No.1 guys. That’s not a knock on them, but young WRs take a few years to be consistently productive (see Vincent Jackson or any of thousands of NFL wrs). The OLine was bad as well. Not a good day for them.
But ultimately you can’t win many games giving up 30something points.

  48. Jmackraider12 Says:

I would love to see us bust sum skulls out there sunday, and yeah grads gotta stretch the field using the sidelines, i don’t know why u guys think that he cant hit anything deep, from my perspective a lot of his success is right down the middle of the field in the seam, in that area he will deliver a dime like he did with Higgins, he throws well deep middle. And he can throw deep on the sidelines…but…
If you were him would you trust your o-line with enough time to hit a streaking DHB after a play fake..no,, that’s why he throws more semi deep stuff to the middle, because hes afraid to open his body to the outside. I guess that’s his fault though, he has yet to prove that he can hit the deep sideline throw and if he does prove it, the defense will open up…

GRAD IS NOT THE LONG TERM SOLUTION, HE IS NOT AN ELITE QB, AND HE IS NOT MAKING EVERY DECISION THE RIGHT DECISION.

    BUT

HE IS THE BEST CHOICE WE HAVE RIGHT NOW, HE IS MAKING DUE WITH WHAT IS GIVEN TO HIM IN A SUPPORTIVE CAST, AND HE IS PUTTING UP POINTS ON THE BOARD.

On top of all that, he keeps the offense motivated, and appears to at least keep us in games.

JC will get a chance sooner or later, and we’ll get to see what he brings to the table. I do agree that 6 quarters is not long enough to make a fair assessment of him. But it is long enough to see that RIGHT NOW Grad is the better choice.

There is no excuse for a lack of execution! This is a reflection of the head coach. Gruden was the last good coach we have had, surprise his teams executed. Cable hasnt been able to get the players to respond to him. They start flat, almost comatose, week in and week out, and fail to take care of fundamentals.

I think hu jack will get a better result, with so many youngsters, you need a head man that will get in your face when you screw it up. not a coach that saus its all the qb’s fault or if my auntie had a a set of nutz she would be my uncle.

    *************
It is none of the above. The fact is the players are NEVER held accountable. Arian Foster was late to a meeting and was benched for a quarter and a half. He is the leading rusher in the NFL right now. Houston disciplined a player, and was better for it. We dont do that… ever. I can not recall even ONE instance where an Oakland player was held out of a game for disciplinary reasons.

Accountability is the word of the day. There is none in Oakland. Why do you think the offense plays better for Gradkowski than it did for Russell or Campbell? He holds them accountable. He gets after them in the huddle. He is a leader. Our coaching staff protects the players instead of getting after them.

I would have the entire defense running wind sprints from sun up to sun down after last weeks performance.

The Raiders have the same access to the same pool of college athletes the rest of the NFL does.

    Come up with another excuse.

    =============================================================

This is absolute truth. That falls on the head coach. the players (vets, leaders) should hold each other to a high standard. this is the way ti was in our sb and championship teams. When that is not enough the coach must step in. We havnt seen that since gruden benched charlie garner, and jerry porter.

Come on cable sack up, some body check this cat for a pulse, he stands on the side line like weekend at bernies!

  69. priesttj Says:

Truth be told Chester McGlokton went to KC and heard that same crap and he was one of the players Marty was talking about. They know around the league that the Raiders were getting fruatrated with the # of penalties called agaisnt them as oppsoed to their opponents and it would get into their heads and they’d proceed to beta themselves. In the old days knew that and would beat the refs and the other team by way of execution. But Tim Brown and Chester and that whole era would let the refs take them out of their game. And other teams wuld provoke them knowing the refs would flag the Raiders.

Well Marty used that to his advantage and beat us a lot and so did Mike Shanahan. They relied on the help from the refs and the Raiders overeaction to it. When Gruden came somehow he got them to focus better. And they started to win and believe that they could still win regardless to what the refs did. But even Gruden saw that the refs were very much agaisnt us in the Tuck Rule game and IMO he wanted out. becaus ehe didn’t think he could ever win here because of that fact. Until the next season he was playing the Raiders in the SB.

I had a conversaion with Bill Callahan’s wife the day he was hired and at that time i was really close to this team and that’s what I gathered from everything I had been hearing up to that point. Other teams used the refs to help beat us and they still do in the division.

I agree with that. Nobody is accountable, EXCEPT the scapegoat of the year, usually the HC.

Does Al Davis ever accept any accountability? does he stand-up and face the media & fans.

    They allowed Russell to hide

Very poor run defense, but it didnt matter because you couldnt run your way to victory against a team that would hang 35 on you. Our offense was composed of some of the best veteran talent around. They didnt need to be held accountable… they did it themselves. Gruden would also get after people if they screwed up…

    ///////////////////////////////////////////////////

I and others have been saying for weeks now that most of the passes that Grads were completing were short and to the sidelines and when teams took that away he has gotten worse with each passing week. He has to show that he can hit someone over the top because we have to keep the safeties honest. pollard was cheating up all game….and no one should know that better than Grads.

If I had to guess, after seeing the doctor for the foot that just wouldnt heal he ended up needing surgery, probably something close to Schilens injury. Probably gonna be out until the bye… All guesses by me. Lets wait and see!

Watching the game last night and Seymour’s pretty frikkin good.

Too bad Hendu couldn’t be in. Kelly looks washed up. With Hendu and Seymour they rarely get pushed off the line. Kelly’s always about 2 yds off the LOS at the snap.

Observers have known this for years.

We’ve seen the constant turnover of coaches, including the trade of the only winning coach the franchise has had since returning to Oakland in 1995. We’ve seen the abysmal drafts, choices made at the owner’s insistence. We’ve seen the misguided energy, the undermining, the players on “scholarship,” the petty bickering and the subjective treatment of individuals on and off the field, as well as those beyond the organization.

Above all, we’ve seen the losses come in waves, 64 in the 84 games, followed by Davis’ clever but transparent attempts to dodge responsibility for the decline of an organization formerly known for its unsurpassed might.

Know some of you don’t read it but Raider Nation Station has some good points no ones really talking much about like how WR/KR Yamon Figurs can make the team, play in games and then be ditched.

    (Now time for my rant…)

All this talk about QB’s is just plain ridiculous!

The truth is we will never know WHAT WE HAVE at the QB position until we get some stability and talent on that offensive line.

I keep seeing all this chatter about Gannon and Brees and all sorts of foolishness. But no one besides myself and maybe one other person has pointed out who Gannon had on that offensive line when he was here.

He had PRO BOWLERS and ALL PROS! He had Wisniewski, he had Barrett Robbins, he had Lincoln Kennedy! On top of that he had Tim Brown and Jerry Rice who in their old age were playing at a much higher level than what we have right now with any of our wide receivers.

Please stop talking about QB’s! Stop it! If Gannon was behind our current offensive line he would be having many of the same struggles that both Campbell and Grads are having. And taking the SAME HITS!

Remember what happened when Barrett Robbins and Lincoln Kennedy retired? That’s right Gannon got hit and his career ended.

Get a clue you guys please. Cable is an idiot. He is solely responsible for that O-line and has failed miserably.

I’ve been saying it since before the season started and will say it again..Fix the O-line…we win the division!

Fix the O-line and get a REAL NT…we stop the run and make it past the wild card game and to the AFC divisional playoff game.

That’s light years ahead of where we have been. But unfortunately that doesn’t appear to be happening any time soon.

Stop complaining about QB’s. We have way bigger problems on our team than that.
