Still no McClain as practice opens

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, October 7th, 2010 at 1:08 pm in Oakland Raiders.

There was no change in the cast of characters Thursday as the Raiders completed warmups and drills before practice.

Middle linebacker Rolando McClain, absent the previous day tending to a death in the family, according to coach Tom Cable was not present. Ricky Brown was lining up with the first team defense.

Also not practicing were running back Darren McFadden (hamstring), left guard Robert Gallery (hamstring), weak side linebacker Quentin Groves (hamstring), linebacker Thomas Howard (knee), linebacker Travis Goethel (lower back), cornerback Walter McFadden, defensive tackle John Henderson (stress fracutre) and wide receiver Chaz Schilens (knee).

Say this for the Raiders _ they may have tight hamstrings, but they’re pretty loose in terms of practice demeanor.

There was no shortage of laughing and joking as they went through the paces at something less than half speed.

We’ll assume the intensity picks up once the prying eyes are sent from the field.

More to come . . .

Should make for some interesting defensive alignments, with no Henderson and maybe no McClain and Groves.

McPain doesn’t need to practice. He learned everything he’ll ever need to know from his days at ‘Bama. You know he was coached there by Paul Bryant himself and has been there and done that.
All kidding aside, I hope his family is okay and wish them peace in their ordeal.

Hayes your swimming in your own words. I just quoted the man. Tell me where he doesn’t lead people to believe that the Raiders view themselves according to the lockeroom post. He said “it tells how the Raiders view themselves” not my words their his. And to be honest Hayes, your full of crap and a sheep and you don’t even know it.

So I’m done, don’t answer because I truely am not interested in what you have to say…….peace!

Too bad that Travis Goethel kid is hurt he could use some time with the 1st string. That kid looked like a playa.
Missing Big John Slappme Hendo is REALLY going to hurt.
Wonder if the Chargirls will try running on us or if they are going to continue to pass their way down the field.
Hope the defense shows up, very disappointed in them this year so far.

Eric Davis and Romo bagging on John Marshall’s defensive scheme. Bend, but don’t break. Seems bent.
Romo caps on Huff for his “soft approach”, thinks the team lacks killer mentality. and they aint breaking enough fingers.

Wow that is an excellent peice of in your face football knowledge.

Its is not about the scheme in the nfl, its about the mentality of the players. Area 21 isnt a guy that fires up his teammates, althogh he is by far the best 1 on 1 press man cover db in leauge. Seymore is a great player but guys dont rally around him either. In fact on defense the only time I hvae seen the team react to an explosive play was when mm34 blew up a guy in preseason!

The idea of a bend and dont break attitude defense is a joke!

  11. priesttj Says:

Travis Goethel is one player I wish were healthy, I liked what I saw from him during preseason. It would be nice to get Chaz back in the mix for midseason are some winnable games.

But in all honesty it just takes a win to change everything that’s going on I really thought we would win that game last week. This week I’m much less optimistic. Maybe that’ll help. lol

  12. NOLA Raider Says:

I despair. I hate pineapple-face and the dolts…and I don’t think we can win. Why o why did I have to be a Raiders fan. If it gets bad in the first quarter, Cable should just let McPain go WWF on receivers over the middle. The team that Al built can’t sell out the stadium with football so maybe they would do better with Vince McMahon’s business plan. What would you pay to see Seymour and Kelly double clothesline Sproles!

    crap

  13. BigTed707 Says:

JLofty – I agree that losing John Henderson is a big step back. It would be nice if Tommy (can you hear me?) Kelly would start EARNING HIS PAY.

It would be REALLY great if some of these other players would GET OFF THE BENCH and start earning their money too! Bush had his dang hand broken and wired back – and he is already back and ready to roll. WTF is up with these mysterious season ending injuries? Old John Hendu has a stress fracture in his foot, that is legit – these other Nancy-Boys just have hurt feelings.

The Raiders don’t need a conditioning coach – they need a psychoanalysis.

  14. priesttj Says:

    Mystic1

Seymour does what he can but these guy’s on the backend specifically Huff just aren’t physical players. His approach to stopping the run is suspect at best. He loves to play the pass but he our FS and he’s killing us vs the run and McClain roght now is guessing and hesitating way too much. It’s really a bad mix right now. Sunday we just got flat out punked!!

  15. RaiderfanNY Says:

Who can be surprised the players are joking around? It’s not like they have a big game this week.

Bill Cowher or (dare I say) Jon Gruden would put a stop to the nonsense.

But we’ll have Bill Fassel instead.

Ward 33 yd TD (a back up)
Ringer 15 ydTD (a back up)
Washington for 56 yrd rect TD

  24. priesttj Says:

What really hurt me the most is when Houston just kept getting hooked. Everything they ran at them worked in the first 3 qrtrs Lamarr was technically whipped into a lather. He finally started to get it after Seymour tore into him. But we were already down 24 to 14 and the tackling was flat out embarrassing. Their backs just juked us left and right. This game we have got to be more disciplined and much more physical. It is time for the DC to move Huff to rover and TB too FS and MM to SS I think we’d be much better on the backend.

  25. LA to TheBay Says:

I don’t know, it seemed pretty one cut and downfield to me.

I think Ricky Brown and and Matt Shaunessy on the field would do us a world of good for that backside cut.

Can’t keep letting teams go against the grain.

  27. NOLA Raider Says:

Clearly Houston needs a fungo bat to be competitive

  28. priesttj Says:

They’re using JFord right now and he’s been good so far I think it’s the way to go for right now. JLH played big at WR last week he’s starting be a real factor in the passing game. He runs that dig better than anyone we have and he’s got better hands than both starters IMO.

  29. Kirk Says:

Shaughnessy starting at end will help, but what this team really needs are offensive and defensive tackles.

    Especially defensive tackles.

You can’t stop the run without good defensive tackles.

  30. LA to TheBay Says:

Wait, so who is practicing at WLB Jerry, Scott?

    Sould be Wimbley-McClain-Brown

Wimbley moved to DE and Scott brought in as LB on passing downs.

Wimbley-McClain-Scott with ShoNasty as DE won’t be as bad last week, but not as good without Brown.

    —————————————–

Well, the Kelly sucks and you have to be able to cause disruption as a DT. Have to. BHP is certainly right about containment though. All you have to do is string out the Raiders D and beat them off the edge. Houston did it a number of times.

How often did you see Texans RBs running to the edge and you’re sitting there like OK they read it, contain them, stop them and they, to your disbelief, kept running.

They don’t have to run at our awful DT when they can run off tackle every play.

Our ends were challenged in that game and failed, especially Scott.

Al HAD to have mandated his converted TE be placed on the LOS. No coach, even trhe sh;tty ones we have, could possibly think that was a good idea.

    ————————–

I think scheme has a lot to do with giving teams a competitive edge in the NFL, but I agree with most of what you say.

We need a guy to fire up this defense. Doesn’t necessarily have to be a Ray Lewis type, of course that would be nice, but the Ray Lewises of the world don’t come around very often. Could be a soft-spoken Polamalu type too if he were to lead by example by firing up the rest of the unit with big plays and big hits.

With that said, I think it’s time to give Mike Mitchell a start or two at strong safety. Fans like to bag on Huff because they’ve already written him off, but Branch has been the culprit on most of the big plays we’ve given up this year. A major disappointment thus far after a promising 2009 season for him.

Mitchell is capable of blowing somebody up — even somebody like Antonio Gates — and we saw after Groves’ special teams hit against the Rams how even one big hit can carry over to a tough, fired-up defensive unit.

Mitchell is capable of blowing somebody up — even somebody like Antonio Gates — and we saw after Groves’ special teams hit against the Rams how even one big hit can carry over to a tough, fired-up defensive unit.

    ====-=

Yeah but is that all Mitchell’s capable of? He may be able to blow him up but bet he can’t cover him.

Groves “big hit” was a crock. He was blocked into the guy BACKWARDS. It was dumb luck he slammmed into the guy.

Technically Wis was a second round pick since Raiders didnt have a number one during that draft year. Something else in common? During the heyday of the early to mid 80’s Ron Wolf handled the majority of the scouting and the draft prior to free agency. In the late 90’s early 2000’s? Bruce Allen was aboard with Jon Gruden handling the personnel choices as well as free agency. Uncle Al. Give it up. If your idol offensive gurul Sid Gilman (an icon in his time) were still alive, he would tell you to wake up and get with the times, turn the football operation over to a young dynamic football guy. I don’t think we can really pinpoint a player or two who’s making this defense bad..Huffs’ shoddy tackling and Branch getting burned stand out because they’re on the back end of the plays, but the scheme is flawed. If you’re going 1v1 all over the field, that’s just bad news waiting to happen. If 1 guy gets pulled out of position or gets picked up by his blocker in the front 7, chances are it’s going to be a big play because the ball carrier is going that way. This team does not attack certain gaps to eliminate the run, they are playing 1 on 1 matchup ball, and that is the biggest problem with this defense. There are personell issues as well, but until the schemes get better, these problems will continue to exist.

Besides kickers, return men, an JaWalrus Russell i really cant place blame on a player on this team. they have essentially no chance playing for this organization and they no it. say what you want about Crabtree but when they showed him after the Raiders picked DHB the truth came out. even a guy about to get paid millions was happy to get passed by us.

Just plain Raider bad luck. The turf toe thing can happen anywhere. I was playing pickup b-ball in college and I just stuck my foot in the floor to pivot on D and I got turf toe on the ball of my right big toe…took two years before it fully healed….

He is typical business owner that wants yes men with no dynamic or original thinking. That messes up their culture. The employees, in this case the culture have no clue what the plan is. Its the I will draft the players based on my ways and theories and your job is to develop them using my (archaic) systems. Uncle Al would rather lose with his methods than win with today’s methods. Marshall actually had his butt handed to him for having the audacity to blitz with (his) zone blitz packages against Cinn and Pitts last year. Regarding McClain, lets put it this way. Not comparing them but Ray Lewis would have trouble with this defensive scheme. Why? Because Lewis is able to improvise. Uncle Al’s system would restrict him. Im been sick over the last 8 years.
