Still no McClain as practice opens

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, October 7th, 2010 at 1:08 pm in Oakland Raiders.

There was no change in the cast of characters Thursday as the Raiders completed warmups and drills before practice.

Middle linebacker Rolando McClain, absent the previous day tending to a death in the family, according to coach Tom Cable was not present. Ricky Brown was lining up with the first team defense.

Also not practicing were running back Darren McFadden (hamstring), left guard Robert Gallery (hamstring), weak side linebacker Quentin Groves (hamstring), linebacker Thomas Howard (knee), linebacker Travis Goethel (lower back), cornerback Walter McFadden, defensive tackle John Henderson (stress fracutre) and wide receiver Chaz Schilens (knee).

Say this for the Raiders _ they may have tight hamstrings, but they’re pretty loose in terms of practice demeanor.

There was no shortage of laughing and joking as they went through the paces at something less than half speed.

We’ll assume the intensity picks up once the prying eyes are sent from the field.

More to come . . .

Furthermore… we have all pash rushers on the dline, which would be fine if we had the Colts or Patriots offense, but we’re not scoring so fast and getting teams off the field early to force them into passing situations. The reason the defense looked so good against the Eagles last year? They are a pass happy bunch who played right into our hands..And there was actual pressure packages for once

going to the game this week to see the streak finally end. we will find a way to wint this game…..i hope

he is outta position JFB. hiw many DE’s can make 1 on 1 tackles, not many.

    ********************************

    Definately out of position.

And yes many DE are going to struggle with 1-1 tackles in space, but they shouldn’t at the LOS.

If Groves isn’t going to make a tackle when he is not only not blocked, but not even accounted for, when is he ever going to?

  • raiders22

i do recall that play, he whiffed terribly, looked like he was falling down for no reason!

Wonder if McClain’s poor game had anything to do with the fact a sick family member was dying?

The game is a blackout but I’ll be in the stadium to hopefully see an end to the 13 game losing streak.

I’m not sure what games a lot of you have been watching, but we’ve been blitzing more lately and playing a soft cover 2 defense, which is why Branch has been victimized sever times in his deep half of the field.

priesttj. Gruden and Allen as a tandem “strongly suggested” personnel acquisitions and cuts to Uncle Al. For example, Do you really think that Rich Gannon would have been signed to a free agent contract had Gruden and/or Allen not insisted on it? Gannon, like Hostetler during the LA days, was brought in because of a suspect offensive line. For your information, Amy Trask has more say in personnel than the coaching staff. Unfortunately its a sorry, sorry state of affairs.

    Good news/ bad news….

The good news: The game WILL be on ch.2 in SO-CAL, won’t have to go to the local dive to see it…

The bad news: IF we’re getting our butts kicked by half time, I’ll have plenty of time to channel my anger into washing all three of my vehicles……

We’ve played more cover 2 lately, yes, but the base defense which is getting us killed against the run is the same cover 0 man to man single high saftey wich leaves Huff as the last line of defense.

Here is how this Sunday is going to go down. The Raider offense gets off to a pathetic start. Grads throws 2 ints in the first half. Halftime Chargers 17 Raiders 3. Then, in a move of desperation, Cable puts Campbell back in the game to appease Al, hoping this will save his job. Campbell leads the team to 24 unanswered points in the second half. Raiders 27, Chargers 17. Raiders then go on a 8 game winning streak.

If Grads goes down….JC will not lead this team anywhere near 24 unanswered points…let alone 12 unanswered.

I want to know what the real deal is with McClain. He’s making tons of money. I agree this sounds fishy. You can’t count on the Raiders telling us the truth on this; they may be, but u can’t count on it.

Someone suggested he’s gone AWOL. Is that possible? If so, why? He doesn’t like playing for Oakland and he’s gonna protest?

  • priesttj

Why wouldn’t Gannon have signed as a FA without Bruce and Gruden? Gruden was the last to agree based on his own words.

Listen if you don’t know something why not ask? instead you pretend that you know and look foolish and lie your way out of it.

Bruce didn’t have much if anything to do with personnel decisions in Oakland that was Mike Lombardi’s dept.

  • PurpleDrank81

His attitude is wierd…He missed time during training camp due to (family problems)…He wont say anything to reporters but he’s done alot of interviews @ Bama…Whats going on here???

  • BigLefty

Raider Ray is drinking the Purple Drank again

  • BigLefty

rumor has it his Grandpa passed away during training camp and the same Grandpa passed away on Monday.

Family deaths are almost always more difficult the second time they pass.

  • rossee

priesttj Are you related to uncle al? Al didn’t want anything to do with Gannon. Period. I have forgotten more about Raider football than you will ever know. I guess you aren’t smart enough to figure out sarcasm. Facts are facts. Today’s football has passed Al buy. His insecurities led to Wolfs, Gruden’s and Allen’s departure. He is typical business owner that wants yes men with no dynamic or original thinking. That messes up their culture. The employees, in this case the culture have no clue what the plan is. Its the I will draft the players based on my ways and theories and your job is to develop them using my (archaic) systems. Uncle Al would rather lose with his methods than win with today’s methods. Marshall actually had his butt handed to him for having the audacity to blitz with (his) zone blitz packages against Cinn and Pitts last year. Regarding McClain, lets put it this way. Not comparing them but Ray Lewis would have trouble with this defensive scheme. Why? Because Lewis is able to improvise. Uncle Al’s system would restrict him. Im been sick over the last 8 years. This once proud franchise needs a makeover.
