Still no McClain as practice opens

There was no change in the cast of characters Thursday as the Raiders completed warmups and drills before practice.

Middle linebacker Rolando McClain, absent the previous day tending to a death in the family, according to coach Tom Cable was not present. Ricky Brown was lining up with the first team defense.

Also not practicing were running back Darren McFadden (hamstring), left guard Robert Gallery (hamstring), weak side linebacker Quentin Groves (hamstring), linebacker Thomas Howard (knee), linebacker Travis Goethel (lower back), cornerback Walter McFadden, defensive tackle John Henderson (stress fracutre) and wide receiver Chaz Schilens (knee).

Say this for the Raiders _ they may have tight hamstrings, but they’re pretty loose in terms of practice demeanor.

There was no shortage of laughing and joking as they went through the paces at something less than half speed.

We’ll assume the intensity picks up once the prying eyes are sent from the field.

More to come . . .

    LOL @ Banana!

    nice pic bro

also love the basic Cable line courtesy of Rick (who always got upset when people called Russell “JaWalrus”)

    Hmmmm

  • J Hill

Ricky Brown wasn’t good enough to beat out that scrub Kirk Morrison, but at least he is a LB with LB instincts.

Hoepfully McClain gets back and Brown replaces Groves.

Tommy Kelly is just plain lazy. He has the physical tools, but there is a reason none drafted him out of Mississippi State. He plays hard one play and take ten off.

Joking around & laughing in practice with a 1-3 record. Thats great. I guess thats why when they take the field they look like a joke & everyone laughs at them. Good job basic Cable.

What Jerry left out is that the players had just been shown the defensive gameplan sent down from Al Davis.

  • J Hill

Dude was clearly lost out there on multiple plays. Would literally be looking around for help DURING the play.

  • Pretty Rick

    Who me?? Naawww,,, :-)

  • J Hill

The real issue with the defense is S play.

No impact play from either S = average defense on a good day.

    Small Banana writes,
“What Jerry left out is that the players had just been shown the defensive gameplan sent down from Al Davis.”
What Scheme….base 4-3, single safety, bump and run. and of course, play like your have no heart.

Trevor Scott would go unclaimed if waived

trevor scott scott has no pass rush moves

trevor scott is not an an nfl caliber player.

    ***

    whoa whoa whoa

    slow down there little league!

Trevor Scott is a situational pass rusher and a darn good one

why we put a guy with his skill set at base end is a coaching/management issue.

  • DutchRaider77

A little rough on Trevor Scott…no doubt he should not be starting DE, but he is a good 3rd/long pass specialist and a good fit for special teams.

Brown? Like everyone else on the Raiders, he seems to be made of glass. As soon as he becomes a starter, he is injured.

  • Chris in NY

I may be crazy, but I can see the Raiders coming out and ripping the Dolts a new one this week. At home, the offense is clicking with Grads at the helm, the Chargers are coming off a blowout win but aren’t as good as they’ve been in recent years, we’re coming off a loss that was embarrassing for the defense, Marty’s comments could fuel that fire.

It sounds nuts, but, 31-20 Rrrraaaiiiddaazzzzzzz with SD tacking on a late TD to make it look closer than it actually was.

  • Pretty Rick

Big Banana,, I didnt even think about the Al Davis gameplan. Now it makes sense.

  • 89052RAIDER

    RR,
T Scott will not sniff a sack all year. He is awful in every aspect. Watch the game film..Horrible.. Al insisting guys like this start is what is killing us.. Same goes for Mario Henderson and, to some degree DHB..

  • The Big Banana

Small banana? Where’d that come from?

  • PurpleDrank81

So T.Scott is going to go from a 7 sack season a year ago to no sacks this year because he’s awful??????

Kell, actually we get a letter like this guy got every year asking for a small fee probably around $75-$150!

but i’m friends with half of the volunteer fire fighters so they would never watch my house burn down…

  • 89052RAIDER

Murphy is far an away our best receiver and Shaunessey is a better option than Scott. However, Al demands they get the nod…I am sure the coaching staff would prefer that Mitchell never plays either…

you guys are jokes ripping scott like that. hes been a team leader in the sack dept for a reason! he shoulve stayed at WLB and just blitzed all yr, but we’re the Al Davis’s and blitzing loses you games.
    wait….

  • J Hill

How is Trevor Scott and Al Davis player?

Wasn’t dude basically an undrafted player?

Trevor Scott over a guy Al drafted in rd 3 in ShoNasty?

Trevor Scott or Al’s 2nd rd pick Houston?

  • lefty12

It seems at times Jerry would rather take shots than report any news about the team. There is nothing wrong with the players laughing and joking around.Better than being uptight.Just get an attitude when the whistle blows. As far as Scott goes,he wasn’t much if any worse than the other DEs last game. Its funny the way one person on here will say something negative about a player and then a bunch of people jump on the bandwagon. And he doesn’t plat tackle,he plays end.

  • 89052RAIDER

Just playing banana. No offense intended.. I have watched Scott closely and he is absolutely getting gashed and has no pash rush…Maybe he is off the juice.

  • J Hill

Murphy is far an away our best receiver

    ——————————————————-

Murphy is not better than Chazerella. May be healthier, but without question Chazerella should start over Murphy.

  • 89052RAIDER

Lefty—scott is not holding the edge and gets blown up on power runs. Teams are going right at him and he cannot get near the QB when the raiders rush four.

Its is not about the scheme in the nfl, its about the mentality of the players. Area 21 isnt a guy that fires up his teammates, althogh he is by far the best 1 on 1 press man cover db in leauge. Seymore is a great player but guys dont rally around him either. In fact on defense the only time I hvae seen the team react to an explosive play was when mm34 blew up a guy in preseason!

    ————————–

I think scheme has a lot to do with giving teams a competitive edge in the NFL, but I agree with most of what you say.

We need a guy to fire up this defense. Doesn’t necessarily have to be a Ray Lewis type, of course that would be nice, but the Ray Lewises of the world don’t come around very often. Could be a soft-spoken Polamalu type too if he were to lead by example by firing up the rest of the unit with big plays and big hits.

With that said, I think it’s time to give Mike Mitchell a start or two at strong safety. Fans like to bag on Huff because they’ve already written him off, but Branch has been the culprit on most of the big plays we’ve given up this year. A major disappointment thus far after a promising 2009 season for him.

Mitchell is capable of blowing somebody up — even somebody like Antonio Gates — and we saw after Groves’ special teams hit against the Rams how even one big hit can carry over to a tough, fired-up defensive unit.

  • pdr

Failure is looking even more imminent than before.

Yeah but is that all Mitchell’s capable of? He may be able to blow him up but bet he can’t cover him.

Groves “big hit” was a crock. He was blocked into the guy BACKWARDS. It was dumb luck he slammmed into the guy.
