Still no McClain as practice opens

There was no change in the cast of characters Thursday as the Raiders completed warmups and drills before practice.

Middle linebacker Rolando McClain, absent the previous day tending to a death in the family, according to coach Tom Cable was not present. Ricky Brown was lining up with the first team defense.

Also not practicing were running back Darren McFadden (hamstring), left guard Robert Gallery (hamstring), weak side linebacker Quentin Groves (hamstring), linebacker Thomas Howard (knee), linebacker Travis Goethel (lower back), cornerback Walter McFadden, defensive tackle John Henderson (stress fracutre) and wide receiver Chaz Schilens (knee).

Say this for the Raiders _ they may have tight hamstrings, but they’re pretty loose in terms of practice demeanor.

There was no shortage of laughing and joking as they went through the paces at something less than half speed.

We’ll assume the intensity picks up once the prying eyes are sent from the field.

More to come . . .

Question? What do these names have in common? Namdi, Seabass, Woodson, Allen, Mosebar, *Wisniewski, Tim Brown? Answer. The only number one draft picks that have worked out since 1980. Technically Wis was a second round pick since Raiders didnt have a number one during that draft year. Something else in common? During the heyday of the early to mid 80′s Ron Wolf handled the majority of the scouting and the draft prior to free agency. In the late 90′s early 2000′s? Bruce Allen was aboard with Jon Gruden handling the personnel choices as well as free agency. Uncle Al. Give it up. If your idol offensive gurul Sid Gilman (an icon in his time) were still alive, he would tell you to wake up and get with the times, turn the football operation over to a young dynamic football guy. An no, your last will and testament stating that the Raiders will continue to run a 4-3 with a deep free safety and no blitzing is unenforceable. Raider fans, thats it in a nutshell. Period. End of story

Not that I know of, but….yeah.

  • JB

Someone ought to be telling this team CLEARLY that there’s nothing to be laughing about – They are the sole possessor of last place in the AFC-W.

They should also be made aware that the rest of the league is not laughing WITH them but rather AT them.

  • Just Fire Baby

Never once did I see anyone say that DMAC should be cut, and I am on here as much as anyone.

Some tongue and cheek “trade DMAC for…..” jokes but that’s all.

The durability question on DMAC is still out there.

Just looked, the only time Darren has played more than 7 games in a row, was when a few of those games he has gotten 3-4 touches.

Looked great so far, best he ever has, but what if he sits out 2-3 weeks and Bush looks just as good?

BFD. I’m not going to draw a whole lot about how a team’s going to play Sunday afternoon from their demeanor during warm-ups at Thursday’s practice.

Nice attempt to incite a riot, Jerry.

  • Just Fire Baby

Did you ever see anyone propose a serious trade proposal KK?

Like trade Darren for a 3rd rounder? or for this player?

Nope, just a bunch of slapstick stuff. People certainly doubted his abilities, myself included, but I don’t remember anybody just flat out saying “cut this guy”.

Now Gradkowski, different story. Some people wanted to keep Colt Brennan over him during the preseason, based on really nothing but hatred of Bruce Gradkowski.

damn i was watching the replay last night, ablout 10:somthing in the first quarter, mcclain was in shaubs face and the defender had his shirt stretched out three feet behind him no call, dump off tho the rb for about 20+ yds. someone needs to file a greivence agianst thos ebaasturds

after week 3 hes a hero.

my point is that ideas in here are rediculous.
whoever just said Groves is a bum worst off-season acquisition…really dude? we got a 1st rounder for a 5th rd pick, did u think he was a pro bowler? hes been better than jags fans made us think he’d be.

    ******************************

Very strange, because in the NFL he has always been pretty physical and never has gotten hurt by a big hit or anything.

It’s turf toe when dragged down from behind, hamstring pull while running to the sideline and the like.

Either way, it can’t keep happening every year.

    rolando is a 3-4 lb,not a 4-3 lb.he has some adjustments.plus the d-line does not keep blockers off him.too bad for him.alabama has a better d scheme than oakland

Groves has missed many an open-field tackle the last few weeks, resulting in big plays.

Probably the Raiders fault for playing him out of position, but his whiff on Beanie Wells in the AZ game was laughable. Unblocked, with the play running right to him, and I don’t even think he touched him.

  • LhayeS37

lamar houston is playing out of position.he is a dt with some quicks.should not be at de

  • http://theviruscarries.com drowningboy
  • raiderlaker1980

I don’t think we can really pinpoint a player or two who’s making this defense bad..Huffs’ shoddy tackling and Branch getting burned stand out because they’re on the back end of the plays, but the scheme is flawed. If you’re going 1v1 all over the field, that’s just bad news waiting to happen. If 1 guy gets pulled out of position or gets picked up by his blocker in the front 7, chances are it’s going to be a big play because the ball carrier is going that way. This team does not attack certain gaps to eliminate the run, they are playing 1 on 1 matchup ball, and that is the biggest problem with this defense. There are personell issues as well, but until the schemes get better, these problems will continue to exist.

  • raiders22

he is outta position JFB. hiw many DE’s can make 1 on 1 tackles, not many.
see we went through an offseason of acquiring 3-4 personnell, then Al was woken from his coma during training camp and told Basic Cable that “The Raiduhs dont play the 3-4 anymore.” so now we’re stuck with 3-4 players and a 1972 4-3 scheme.

Besides kickers, return men, an JaWalrus Russell i really cant place blame on a player on this team. they have essentially no chance playing for this organization and they no it. say what you want about Crabtree but when they showed him after the Raiders picked DHB the truth came out. even a guy about to get paid millions was happy to get passed by us.
    humiliating

This is true, but the question is why? Answer… there is no design to get 2 or 3 players to 1 spot to foil a play, it’s predicated on everyone beating their man far too often

Just plain Raider bad luck. The turf toe thing can happen anywhere. I was playing pickup b-ball in college and I just stuck my foot in the floor to pivot on D and I got turf toe on the ball of my right big toe…took two years before it fully healed….

I can’t explain the hamstring issues this team has this year….never seen anything like it….other than in a softball league with a bunch of bear bellied players trying to run for the first time in 9 months!
