Could be Boller’s turn next

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, October 14th, 2010 at 1:18 pm in Oakland Raiders.

With the Raiders having already gone from Jason Campbell to Bruce Gradkowski to Campbell again, can Kyle Boller be far behind?

Judging from Gradkowski’s level of activity during the media window Thursday, Boller will be backing up Campbell against the San Francisco 49ers.

And given that quarterbacks are often put in a compromising position in terms of injury, and that Hue Jackson and Tom Cable didn’t hesitate to give Campbell the hook when things weren’t going well, Boller could find himself getting on the field for the first time since the preseason.

Boller was getting work in a walk-through setting along with Campbell, while Gradkowski was a spectactor. If Gradkowski isn’t healthy enough to start, his arm isn’t going to feel any better as a backup _ meaning Boller is the likely No. 2.

Players who weren’t practicing were defensive tackle John Henderson (stress fracture), linebacker Travis Goethel (lower back), wide receiver Chaz Schilens (knee), linebacker Thomas Howard (knee) and running back Michael Bennett.

Bennett was jogging on a separate field as practice began.

Left guard Robert Gallery was with the first team defense at left guard, while Darren McFadden got in some work at the less-than-half speed walkthrough pace.

“I’m still feeling it right now,” McFadden said before practice began. I haven’t gone out there and tried to go 100 percent . . . I’m still working and taking my time with it.”

Asked if he thought he could play, McFadden said, “It’s up in the air right now,” and when asked if the odds were 50-50, he agreed.

Boller had a training camp that was solid enough for coach Tom Cable to say he’d pulled even with the injured Gradkowski in the competition to be Campbell’s backup. Gradkowski moved ahead with solid preseason performances against San Francisco and Seattle.

Boller was 26 of 43 for 360 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the preseason. He signed with the Raiders on April 15, before the team had cut JaMarcus Russell and traded for Campbell.

More to come . . .

    The reason the pass defense stinks is there is no center fielder. Huff was drafted that high because he made plays at Texas close to the line of scrimmage, and can cover man to man, he is not Ed Reed. Thus, keep him blitzing, or covering the slot, not as the center fielder or the last line of defense. That’s just bad coaching to have him in that role. Play to his strengths, and we saw what happens on Sunday, he made a play, put him in space he’s lost. While sure it was against 3rd stringers, but Brown showed in the preseason he can play center field, and has shown on special teams he can tackle, so there is your single high/center field free safety we need.

    =======================================================

    Couldnt agree more. Huff can cover a man, he is not good covering the field. Even though he has the speed, he is always out of position back there. Also our safety needs to be a good tackler, huff struggles there as well.

    Wasnt he a gruden pick, cant quite remember.

  • turner42

    As for the QB situation; Neither are going to the HOF, and the offense is basic, so keep the hot hand out there, and keep them on their toes. Produce TD’s you stay in the game, stall drives for FG’s your out. I mean if your going to rotate LT’s, which is unheard of, why not Qb’s?

    Bill Clinton didn’t show his face for several years after his presidency other than to stump for his wife; it is called professional courtesy. Presidents generally allow the next president to have the spotlight for some time, and then they move back into the fray several years later, if at all.

    That’s what got Bush into office the second time.

    It’s all a joke.
    ++++++++++++++++++++

    Dude, you are showing your ignorance on this topic. Bush won easily in his second term.

    And as to the electoral college, this is a nation made up of individual states that had to compromise in order to form this nation…if you like the idea of the UNITED STATES then you should applaud the electoral college and the fact that each state gets two senators, because without those compromises there would be no UNITED STATES. This nation isn’t going to be dominated by two or three States that have the greatest population as long as there is the electoral college and the senate.

    Today’s crazy prediction:
    Kyle Boller ends up the long term Raider QB if he gets a shot.

    Gradkowski has the spunk but lacks the arm and personal sense of…gravitas that will take you through to a super bowl win.

    Campbell has the arm, and seems level headed, but lacks fire.

    Boller has fire and an arm, and accuracy has improved.

    The Federal Reserve System (also known as the Federal Reserve, and informally as The Fed) is the central banking system of the United States. It was created in 1913 with the enactment of the Federal Reserve Act, and was largely a response to a series of financial panics, particularly a severe panic in 1907.[1][2][3] Over time, the roles and responsibilities of the Federal Reserve System have expanded and its structure has evolved.[2][4] Events such as the Great Depression were major factors leading to changes in the system.[5] Its duties today, according to official Federal Reserve documentation, are to conduct the nation’s monetary policy, supervise and regulate banking institutions, maintain the stability of the financial system and provide financial services to depository institutions, the U.S. government, and foreign official institutions.[6]

    You said all DMAC needs is a head coach or Offense head who can use him properly. You have been saying that for two years.

    Laugh all you want, DHB just needs a strong armed QB that can lay a pass right in his hands while on a full sprint or at least get real close.
    He has a problem catching the ball, however for all we know a top ten QB could make DHB look like a top ten reciever
    ++++++++++++++++++++++

    But the difference between McFadden and DHB is that McFadden actually produced in college. DHB didn’t. I think DHB has the work ethic to become a little better, but that is his only chance because those hands of stone are not going to suddenly get softer.

    +++++++++++++

    Wrong, in a 4-3 there can be a NT and a 3 tech DT. The NT tries to occuopy the C and a G (Ted Washington or Sam Adams), and the Three Tech is usually the better pass rusher (Warren Sapp).

    Playing with two Three Techs (Kelly/Bryant/Seymour) = disaster.

    Football 101

    “Frequently in a 4-3 defense, the DTs will have one gap responsibility. That means the DTs line up on the shoulder of their man, not head to head, and attempt to get by him and into the backfield. They are responsible that no running back comes through their gap. In the picture above, the gaps are lettered “A,” “B,” and “C.” The positions where the DTs can line up are numbered 1 through 6. Normally in a 4-3 you will have on very large DT who weighs about 330 to 360 pounds. He will line up on the Center’s shoulder and handle an A gap. This large guy is called a Nose Tackle (NT). You will often have a second DT who is just a little smaller and faster, perhaps 305-320 pounds, who will line up on the outside shoulder of the right guard in the 3 position. This DT is sometimes called a “3-technique” because of where he lines up. He will have responsibility for a B gap.”
