Not so fast on McFadden
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, October 14th, 2010 at 11:39 am in Oakland Raiders.
Raiders running back Darren McFadden was less than optimistic at assessing his chances to play Sunday against the 49ers, while left guard Robert Gallery said he expected to start.
No official word about the starting quarterback, but it will be Jason Campbell. Offensive coordinator Hue Jackson said it “looks like” Campbell would start in place of Bruce Gradkowski, who is nursing an injured shoulder, but was leaving the final announcement up to coach Tom Cable.
Running back Michael Bennett returned to work after the birth of his third child, a son, and said he hoped to test his hamstring injury before practice.
More to come . . .

Anyone heard of this new book called “Bada$$es?” Its about the Raiders in the 70’s. Going to Barnes and Noble today to try to pick it up. The Author on Sirius yesterday said he thinks this years Raiders remind him alot of the Raider teams from the 70’s. Lets hope that they start acting like it.
============================
wow. Are you serious? The Raiders oline suck. The WR’s suck. The D line sucks. The qb’s wouldn’t start anywhere else.
Key phrase was “the author on Serius says”…it’s said to encourage sales.
No one..as in NO ONE WOULD EVER STATE THIS YEARS TEAM IS ANYWHERE CLOSE TO THE RAIDERS OF THE 70′S.
that’s a damn insult to the players from that era…
************************************************
Hey Richochet, Did you hear the interview with the author on Sirius yeasterday? There was alot said in between too. I just don’t have the time to post the whole thing on here. Nor do I have a transcript. Calm down man.

Gore will get his yards, no question, but he won’t embarrass the run D like Chris Johnson or Arian Foster did.

PA: thats fair
just FYI – the 49ers have the 3rd WORST running attack in the NFL
averaging just 78 rushing yards per game with 2 TD’s on the season

New post c-blocked me, so I’ll put my prediction here:
I’m goin’ balls out optimism. If there’s any game that it’s okay for this year, this is it.
Nnamdi and Routt each snag a pick off Smith. Gore will get his yards, no question, but he won’t embarrass the run D like Chris Johnson or Arian Foster did.
Campbell will be solid, if unspectacular. But that’s what we’ll need with Bush running well and Miller torching their safeties.
Raiders 33 – Niners 20. Print it.
Watch for this matchup: Seymour up against Mike Iupati. Iupati’s an awesome run blocker, but he can get abused in pass protection. Seymour’s lived in the opponent’s backfield much of the season. 2 sacks for Big Sey.
October 14th, 2010 at 11:44 am
Nick Miller, at least 2 punt returns over 20 yards

Chris Johnson looked good when he filled in for Hall a couple years ago, his play has gotten worse and Routt’s has improved. Seriously watch how many times he screws up on many different levels. I wanted the gut cut after last week, and that is not being dramatic.

I don’t think we’ll have a big Crabs vs DHB showdown this Sunday … do you?
I’m predicting something like 2 catches for 45 yards (Crab) and 1 catch for 7 yards (DHGhost)
Davis vs Miller = nice
Gore vs Bush = nice
==============================
Sup Rock,
Re: Crab/Bey Crab started off season slow, but came out of his shell last week. Bey started off season slow, then bought really big cement shoes and bought Harry Potters invisibility cloak, because he’s either gone to a crawl, or disappeared all together.
I think Crab got over 100 yds last week. Bey got 100 inches….oh wait. Take off the 1. zero for last week.
I’m guessing Raiders will concentrate on shutting down Crab as much as possible, wanting to avoid the ’should have taken him” angle to follow.
And Raiders will definitely be throwing more and more at Bey, by orders of the Grand Poo-bah up in his guild-ed throne room, which could either be good, or really really bad.
Guess is Crab gets 6 catches, for 75 yds.
DHB gets 4 for 60
Good TE matchups, for sure. Gore is definitely better than Bush as far as talent, but Gore pretty much sucks this year, so that’s another good matchup.
Both olines are porous as hell, with rookies getting schooled.
Boils down to which qb handles the massive amount of pressure, because if either one lays a massive egg, costing the team the game (turnovers, fumbles, bad decisions) then that qb’s fans will tar and feather him, and they might as well ask to be traded, because both teams fans seem on the fence regarding Smith and Campbell.

The reason i think campbell will eventually thrive with this team he has the most important skills that a good qb needs.
1. He reads defense. You can see his head turning while dropping back, and in the shotgun, going through his reads. bruce was cool but he seldom goes through all of his reads, looked like sometimes his mind is made up before the snap. however his improve skill is pretty decent.
2. Accuracy, once he’s made the read he delivers the ball with accuracy, and velocity, or touch.
3. Game management, he doesnt force a lot of balls. I think it is better to have a guy that a little more conservative than a gun slinging farve type. Even though gun slingers makes it exciting, the turn overs kill you.
I think this is the biggest difference between qbs like montana and young, vs farve ( the most overrated qb ever).
4. Size, you need it in the nfl. if you are not 6″2 or taller, you wont be very good, very few short guys can make it.
Then the bonus. He has the rocket arm.
He only needs more time.

I predict a much more conservative approach by the coaches this week with Campbell in there. MB better buckle that chin strap. Lots of tough 3-4 yard runs, play-action, quick outs, screen passes, with maybe a heave it up bomb or 3 spread throughout the game in hopes of catching the 49ers sleeping or drawing a P.I. flag. Don’t think they ask Campbell to drop back and read the D much. Just quick, predetermined, vanilla stuff. Much like what Kiffin used to run when JaMarcus first stepped in.
And I think that’s probably the best approach with Campbell. Create a safe, low-risk/low reward game for him and try to get the hell out of there with a 17-14 win.
Of course, that means we’re going to have to lean on the defense to come up big this week. And if the D struggles early we’ll have to just start winging it.

I wasn’t for drafting DHB with the 7th or 8th pick but I like the kid. He’s got physical skills/gifts and is a hard worker. But he’s young and WRs usually take a while to catch on in this league.
So that being said I do NOT think he’ll have a breakout game against the 9Balls this week. He may or may not have one this season at all. But certainly not with Campbell at QB at this point in the season. That broken play where DHB was WIDE open and Campbell either ran it OB or dumped it or whatever he did, that play says it all. Campbell isn’t really looking for him like Grad seems to.
I also don’t think Cable and HueJ are going to try and make any statements regarding him and Crabgrass. I think Cable is trying to focus the guys on winning and unless they’ve seen some matchup deal where they are going to exploit it until the 9Balls stop it they will just try to win. Hopefully anyway.
And I hope DHB shuts me down and goes MONSTER on the 9Ball DBs.
That’d be sweet after all those tools got uppity after that draft. Fools they deserve their carppy owner/coach/team.

Don’t expect much from DHB in his “SHOWDOWN” with Crabtree this week.
Campbell has only thrown it his way a handful of times this year and I doubt that changes on Sunday. Don’t think Crabtree does a whole lot either though. Much more concerned with Gore and DaDavis.
Crabtree: 4 catches, 37 yards, 0 TDs
DHB: 1 catch, 11 yards, 1 35-yard P.I. flag drawn, 0 TDs
Murphy: 2 catches, 50 yards, possibly 1 TD

***********************************************************
Why do you say this, too protect our oline?
—————————
Partially. I think SF is going to attack with blitzes and Campbell doesn’t read and react fast enough and won’t make the tough throws to make them pay.
Factor in the o-lines inconsistency and frequent leakiness and it’d be a bonanza of turnovers and sacks.

I will partially agree, i think the niners will blitz for two reasons. They are a 3-4 team, that scheme is about blitzing, but this also the only way they can generate heat.
To say capmbell doesnt read or react to the blitz, not true. he picked the dichargers apart. They tried to heat him up, it worked on campbells first series, after that he pretty much owned them.

DHB will have breakout game, teammates are in his ear how everyone is saying that Crabtree should have been first wideout taken in draft. DHB is pumped and will catch his 1st TD of the season-write that down.
=====================
What I’ll write down is you have a penchant for chasing parked cars.
Last 3 games: DHB-3 receptions, then 2, then zero.
Seriously, stating “he’s pumped”??
Really? players need to get pumped, in the NFL, when getting millions to perform?
If that’s the case, they shouldn’t be in the NFL.
———————-
Let’s face it, this dude needs any kind of spark or confidence builder he can. It is sad, but the kid has a good attitude and I’m pulling for him. I didn’t want primadonna Crabtree, he didn’t want to play for the Raiders anyway. To answer your question: I agree the $$ should be ample motivation, I just think in this case the “track star” needs something to build on to get rolling, I’m thinking this may be the week-I guess we’ll see.
================================
Always said that two positions are complete “head game” positions. QB and kicker..if they press too much, they tighten up, and results are disastrous.
Add to that receivers who have something to prove.
When DHB is comfortable (training camp, where everyone predicted he’s turned the corner) he’s solid, but game time, between the ears becomes his enemy.
once he settles down, he’ll be ok.
question is, when will that happen?

I disagree. We only completed 2 passes to our WRs all day — one of them a screen pass.
Campbell may have completed only one pass that was 10+ yards in the air all day. There were I think 4 others that gained 10+ yards but those were screens or passes where the tight end caught it in the 5-10 yard range and picked up some extra yardage.
That’s pretty vanilla to me. I think it was more of Campbell’s style than Hue’s playcalling though. This week I suspect Hue Jackman reins it in and adopts a more simple, conservative approach with 2 or 3 pre-planned, strategic strikes down tha field.

It’s a great day to be a Raiders fan! Isn’t it?!
Vegas — I agree with your earlier statement about DHB having to stop and turn to go after balls thrown his direction…but it’s not as simple as saying DHB can’t catch while running.
When a WR makes a move that beats (or potentially beats) a DB, the window for throwing the ball timely is very small, actually. DHB has beaten his man (or men) a number of times, but the ball hasn’t been released. By the time the ball’s released, the route either is compromised or the DB has recovered sufficiently enough to disrupt the play.
Grads and DHB have much better timing than Campbell and DHB do…and not releasing the ball in a timely fashion has hurt JCampbell with receivers other than DHB, too. The only way DHB will continue to grow as a downfield threat is if he gets the ball in a timely fashion, and with plenty of opportunities to catch it in-stride.

Murphy makes plays? How many balls has DHB dropped this year, and how many has Murphy dropped? When were those drops? Murphy should’ve caught a crucial ball even YOU could have caught two weeks ago, KK.
DHB looks fine…he needs to see the ball more. Also, Jacoby Ford needs to see more reps as a WR — his natural, easy-to-get-open style could take him far (regardless of how he does as a KR or PR).
People calling for the heads of the young WR’s before they have matured in NFL terms should instead be calling for them to get fed the ball more frequently. Steady diet.

————-
Our o-line play was actually way worse just before Cable got here in the Art Shell II season. That line was a trainwreck.
As an o-line specialist though Cable should have that group much better than it is now.
I will say this for the o-line, they have consistently helped our backs churn out 100+ yard games. They’re doing a good job of run-blocking. Pass protection has been very inconsistent though.
Haven’t heard Satele’s name much since he was reinserted back into the lineup and that’s a good thing. He seems to be getting it done. Loper has filled in nicely. And they did a great job in pass protection in the 2nd half of the SD game.

Hu jack did not call a vanilla game at all. The san diego safeties played back to take the deep stuff away, so campbell abused them underneath, Thats not vanilla, thats smart.
—————————-
LMAO!!!!
you mean how he dumped off 50% of his passes like he has always done in his ENTIRE CAREER. Why dont you look up his career stats in yds per completion? Compare it to weak arm guy like Jeff Garcia or Drew Brees? I already know the answer.
=========================================================
Ok first off lets not get into a campbell vs. grads thing…again.
Checking down beats forcing the ball. Dumping the ball off and letting your athletes make plays is a good thing, especially when the defense is trying to take away the deep game. He drove down the field on two long time consuming drives doing it, and it helped us win the game.
That is called game management, Campbell is a natural and well schooled in this department. Being a good game manager, is one of the most important attributes a qb can have.
By the way, when your main weapons are chris cooly and santana moss, that limits your ability to go down the field. moss is not the vertical threat he was 5 years ago.
as he builds with our guys you will see them stretch the field.

Well DHB needs to turn it around starting Sunday. People still waiting on breakout game from the young guy.
I still believe making too much out of the Craptree vs DHB thing. This game will come down to the 4th quarter and who will or wont choke.
I’m confident we can pull out a win but dont think the 49ers are chopped liver. Smith will have a short leash and SF plays better at home.
Should be one of the more exciting games of the week. I expect turnovers and big plays by both teams

If DHB makes 4 catches a game for 55-ish yards (not unrealistic), his production would be that of a quality NFL WR. As long as those catches and yards mattered, that is (i.e., they’re not “hollow” stats when a game’s already been decided).
Not only is DHB ready to catch 4 balls per game, but he’s likely going to be catching more than that per game by the end of the year. I’ll even make a guess that (barring injury to himself) DHB will be catching +/- 6 per game by the last 5 games of the season. This of course means our very impressive Running game holds up all year.
If those things happen…the Raiders will be 9-7 or better, even after the bad start.

You said all DMAC needs is a head coach or Offense head who can use him properly. You have been saying that for two years.
Laugh all you want, DHB just needs a strong armed QB that can lay a pass right in his hands while on a full sprint or at least get real close.
He has a problem catching the ball, however for all we know a top ten QB could make DHB look like a top ten reciever

Anyone remember Malcom Floyd who played for Houston Oilers/Tennesse Titans in ’90s? He’s actually the older brother of the Malcom Floyd in the league today. Their real last name is Seabron, but they changed it to Floyd after a racist incident with white relatives in the south (truth, not making this up). Unknown why both of their names are Malcom. George Foreman named a few of his sons George, too. The elder Malcom Floyd attended McClatchy high in Sacramento in the late ’80s (then going by Seabron).

Are you starting another I hate jc conversation.
Arm strength isnt the most important quality, in my book.
Reading defense, making accurate throws, game management and size, these are the big attributes a qb can have in my book. Campbell has them.
Campbells arm strength is a bonus. ( you need it to run our offense).
October 14th, 2010 at 1:23 pm
DHB might become a top ten receiver after he becomes the receiver in his team. Right now DHB is behind ZMiller, DMac, Murph, MBush, & Schillins (who doesnt even play!). So he’s got his plate full before he is the QBs preferred choice here in Oak.
October 14th, 2010 at 1:23 pm
Routt is the second best CB we have on this team like I said in the pre-season when you semi’s and RRS were calling for his head. W McFadden might be the nickle when he’s healthy. CJ can watch and take notes in case a guy goes down.
October 14th, 2010 at 1:23 pm

Actually, I would think that Alex Smith takes more away more from the 9ers offense.
Since Alex Smith does better out of a shotgun and a shotgun formation takes away from the 9ers power running game (Frank Gore).
I think the 9ers would be a better team with Jason Campbell at the helm.
Also, I am very suprised that they do not use Brian Westbrook more in the passing game (split him out, where he thrived on the Eagles.)
Think Singulatary will pull a Tom Cable at the end of the year and blame everything on Alex Smith? (Not saying that Tom Cable was not justified)

October 14th, 2010 at 1:26 pm
The year we drafted DHB I remember telling a number of people DHB is NOT the best WR in the draft. There are about Two posession WRs and 1 speedster that I think are more polished. They were Crabtree and Hakeem Nicks and Maclin down field. I said, all these guys can contribute immediatley. But if you ask me who had the measurables and coached up seems like they would have the better upside. I said it was DHB. If you look at his game at MD not only did he have the speed he had the height and the frame with more muscle to go up and catch the jump ball. There is always that WR sleeper that you just don’t plan for (Rice, TO, Colsten, Chad Johnson, etc.). Usually the top drafted WRs w/ exception Tim Brown never turn out to be worth their weight in gold. Now I did not consider him a #7 pick but I did think he had mad upside.

I have to root for Jason Cambell because he is the quarterback of my team. I will definatly close my eyes everytime he drops back and give a prayer. Lets just see if he actually wins the game or if our running backs, defense, and special teams win the games. I sure just cant see all your arguments about Jason managing a game when he calls back to back timeouts and gets bailed out from the refs or doesnt call a time out when our guys are out of position or when he fumbles again cause he just wont throw the ball to someone or out of bounds. Or maybe one of his errant throws wont just go through the defenders hands and it will be a pick six. Looks like he is doing really well at managing a game… Grads turnovers have all been in the receivers chest or hands and so happens they get deflected so he gets credit for the pick.
