Cable on QB: We have no idea
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, October 20th, 2010 at 10:39 am in Oakland Raiders.
Raiders coach Tom Cable, speaking by conference call to the Denver media Wednesday morning, said, “We have no idea at this point” who will start at quarterback against the Broncos.
“It’s difficult in that you’d like to be settled and know where you’re headed, but we’ve got some issues,” Cable said. “So, I don’t really know when we’ll have something definitive, hopefully tomorrow, but today we’ll learn a lot, so we’ll see.”
The Raiders will have no coordinators available today, nor will they send a quarterback to the podium to speak with the media.
The Raiders open locker room session begins at approximately 10:45 a.m.
More to come . . .

Really?
October 20th, 2010 at 10:44 am
Does it really matter, none of those QBs can tackle anyway. Some running back will be contained all day, EXCEPT for those two or three runs right through the middle of our defense for over 125 yards……….again!
October 20th, 2010 at 10:45 am
Maybe Cable will start Chris Johnson at QB…he can’t be worse there than he is at the CB.
October 20th, 2010 at 10:47 am
At least if CJ was the QB, he’d get an interception.

“WE HAVE NO IDEA” – 4 words that describes the Raider’s coaching staff and their method of operation when it comes to turning this team around or their direction from above.
DON’T HAVE A CLUE is just another observation of their abilities to affect change.

Ronald Curry for QB
October 20th, 2010 at 10:58 am
I guess the are drawing straws to see who gets stuck with telling the fan base that we are still screwed and “WE STILL HAVE ISSUES”. No Schit Dick Tracy. I think we’ve already figured that out.
AD really needs to bring Bill Parcells in to clean house. AD & Parcells are friends so that relationship is workable if either of the parties choose to make it happen. Maybe he could bring in Harbaugh as HC and Wade Philips should be available by then to become our DC.
We could turn this thing around if AD would only give it a chance.

yeah raider dave I was hoping I would see Hue or Cable give campbell the business on the sideline but nothing! It probably wouldn’t have mattered but anything is worth a shot! I agree. That’s what this sounds like to me from Cable’s comments.
If Grads is injured and Campbell’s injured then it should be a no brainer. Start Boller.
If Grads is injured, and Campbell is NOT injured, then based on Campbell’s performance it should be Boller.
I don’t see the problem.
Sounds to me like Campbell’s knee isn’t bad enough to keep him off the field, Cable and Jackson want to start Boller, but Big Al is opposed to that idea.
This appears cut and dry to me. If Boller is healthy, he should be starting.
October 20th, 2010 at 11:14 am
This is bad news in that it means Grads might be more seriously injured than thought.
There is no QB controversy if Grads is healthy.
There is no Raider passing offense if he isn’t.
At least not if Campbell is at the helm.
Cable shouldn’t be saying ‘we have no idea’. He should be saying ‘If Grads can’t go, then Boller will. JaJason will not start again this year’.
Sort of like when he assured a grateful Raider nation that it wouldn’t have to endure another Sunday with JaMoron starting last season.
If I was a Mule fan I’d be salivating over the thought of facing the Raids with JaJason at QB. Maybe Cable should announce JaJason as the starter just to get them overconfident.
October 20th, 2010 at 11:14 am
If Gradikowski can throw the ball past the line of scrimmage at practice today. he will start. If he can’t tie his shoes to go to practice it’s going to be Boller. I hope Boller ties Gradikowski’s shoes.

At this point, there is no faith in Campbell. I also believe that it will be Cable’s call, not Al’s.
After, what 10.7 QB rating? and that BS attitude, even Davis will give Tom the pass. He wants the ball in the hands of his brilliant WRs and Campbell can’t do it.
Boller’s a first round reclaimation project. If he wins, just let Al take the credit.
October 20th, 2010 at 11:20 am

Wonder if Mark Davis (or whoever takes over when Al is unable to run the team) will bring in former Raiders to coach or manage.
Romo as LBs coach, Howie as DC, Rich as OC. Gruden HC. Dream line up. Oh well, there’s always Madden. At least there, the Raiders are good every year with a real GM/HC at the helm.

the raiders need to spend money on a great coach first. instead they over pay on jamarcus russell ($32 million guaranteed) or nnamdi (2 years were guaranteed at $28 million).
without a coach like bill cowher or gruden – nothing will come of the team.
they will just continue to drift. broncos/hawks/steelers/chiefs are upcoming -

The key word here being routinely. You are correct, it would not be a wise approach to continually berate your players. However, it would be refreshing to see Cable at least once show the emotion that we all know is or at least should be there.
Misery loves company and it is not unreasonable to expect our on field leader to at least share our pain every now & then. Possibly, this is one of the visible emotions that Gruden wore on his sleeve that endeared him to the fans. John Madden was certainly involved with his players and at times “communicated” with players he wasn’t happy with.
Inaction on the part of Tom Cable, when confronted with obvious system failures, can easily be construed as being lackadaisical or worse, being oblivious to his surroundings. This perception does not build confidence in one’s ability to deal with the issues at hand.
My recommendation to TC would be if you are going down, do it while you are swinging and take them with you. Fight for your continued survival Tom. Quit being a mushroom – living in the dark while eating bullschit. You should be better than that.

October 20th, 2010 at 11:35 am
It’s Cable’s call, but he’s also got to have Al’s approval.
Al’s a stubborn old coot, but he’s not blind. He hoped JaJason could be Plunk II. He should know now that that was a pipe dream. In all honesty, he should have known that before giving up a 4th rd pick for him. But at the time bringing JaJason in seemed the right move because it was of paramount importance to rid the squad of the JaMoron cancer.
In any event, if Grads can’t go then Boller should. JaJason shouldn’t even be considered and should be cut unceremoniously to avoid offseason suspense. Then Preist can hope he gets picked up by Buffalo and start there. Or JaJason can share JaMoron’s fate of being unemployed.

I’d like to see what Boller can do. It seems to me that of all our QBs he’s got the most upside. His time in Balt was brief, he was young, and if I’m not mistaken involved some coaching changes. It takes some time to learn to be a decent NFL QB, one of the toughest jobs in America. How the game plan and passing strategy interlaces with the personnel and the defense on a given day/game.
Anyway if Grads shoulder isn’t 90-95% then we need to see what Boller can do. If Campbell has a gimpy leg then that option should be off the table. That was about the only stuff he did decent at last Sunday.

Can’t argue with that assessment. We’ve become starved for success for so long that anything resembling a QB is hailed as the next coming. Maybe that explains AD’s premature proclamations. I’m sure he wants to win and is as frustrated as the rest of us. Actually more so because he does have the wherewithal to initiate change. He really has to be frustrated at the ongoing failure that unfortunately is his.
October 20th, 2010 at 12:05 pm
And that’s why the 49ers just beat the Raiders with the worst QB in the game. They’re players are playing like men to avoid Singletary’s wrath. The Raiders simply don’t know of that kind of pressure. Only the gifted leaders like Miller and Gradkowski will step up in environments like that. And of course Gradkowski was on the bench.

Guys, Madden was EXPLICIT about retiring and getting out of the daily grind. Maybe he could be had for an advisory role but that didn’t work out real swell for the 9Balls and Bill Walsh if I recall.
Also while Parcells would be a great football person to lead us, he is also advancing in years and his AN EAST COAST guy. He has houses in Saratoga NY, and Jupiter FLA. and just retired from a sweet gig in FLA remember? Being a GM or a HC in the NFL is a 12-14hr a day grind. Barely a day off. Competing at the highest levels of the most competitive elements in the world takes a ton of energy. Its why an 81 yo man in poor health is ill-fit to run a pro NFL operation and why we are were we are. Its why you don’t see Gruden scrambling to back into the meat grinder.

I wouldn’t use Kiffin as an example. Kiffin was, and still is a complete jack azz moron. Just ask the Vols and Jeff Fischer if you need an agreement.
Gruden is a better example. Al gave him some rope, but Gruden eventually didn’t have enough and got sick of it.

What do you mean when you say you want CAble to call out players? That’s what Kiffin did. Kiffin hadn’t yet abandoned Tennessee yet.

He did NOTHING wrong here.

Raiderman99 the only Jason Campbell fan here is you, I’ll bet you also think if Michael Bush couldn’t start anywhere else……….probably Nnamdi too.
Dumbell.
============================================
Preist, you’re obviously confusing me with someone else. Anyone familiar with my posts knows what I think of JaJason. (By the way, I’d like to take credit for coining the ‘JaJason’ name, I believe I was the first to use it).
I’m one of the only posters here that thinks Grads is the long term answer and a franchise QB. For that, you can ridicule me if you choose. In fact, I’d really appreciate it if you would, based on your track record of assessing QBs.
As far as Bush goes, I was ecstatic when the Raids drafted him with the first pick in the 4th rd. I think he’s a very good back. He definitely could start other places and excel. He’s a bruiser once he gets going downfield with surprising elusiveness for such a big man. Also has very good hands which the Raids have not utilized properly to date. Only thing I didn’t appreciate about Bush was his unwillingness to play full back when the Raids desperately needed him to do so. I can understand his reluctance to do so, but in my opinion he should have put the TEAM first in that instance. Besides that, I’m a big fan of his.
Concerning Nnamdi, I think he’s a terrific cover corner. Definitely one of the best, even if he hasn’t secured as many picks as we’d like to see. I think he has a future as a safety once he slows down, he’s a very good tackler, and wouldn’t be surprised to see him garner quite a few more interceptions if the move to safety actually happens.
So Preist, you’d lose your bet about what I think. And you also need to calm down and quit calling me a dumbell…unless you want me to call you a pompous douchebag in return. I don’t want to do that !
October 20th, 2010 at 12:23 pm

Al is a wannabe. Total fraud. Never built a team in his life. Wolf and Gruden built our winners.
Entire front office is nothing but DAvis enablers.

I don’t really have an opinion one way or another regarding Kiffin. I don’t recall any of the players really bashing him publicly after he left. But I know Cable was pissed he took coaches, the way he left the Vols wasn’t very good, and trying to take coaches from the Titans and pissing off Jeff Fischer (who is highly respected in the NFL) wasn’t very smart. His reputation isn’t very good around football, not just Raider fans. Thats all I am saying.
In regards to coaches vs. Al Davis debate, I am simply stating Jon Gruden is a better argument than Lane Kiffin, based on Lane Kiffin’s actions after he left the Raiders.

Bruce Gradkowski (shoulder) did not participate in Raiders practice Wednesday.
Jason Campbell (knee) and Kyle Boller (ineffective) rotated snaps with the first-team offense. Gradkowski’s inability to participate signals that he is the least likely Raiders quarterback to play in Week 7. Campbell will have to stay healthy throughout the week, but appears to be the early favorite.

Darren McFadden (hamstring) and Michael Bush alternated with the Raiders’ first-team offense in practice Wednesday.
The workout, however, was “not even half-speed,” so McFadden didn’t really test the hamstring by opening up and running. We’ll know more about his status on Thursday, but it’s a safe bet that he’ll be a game-time decision again. The Broncos can’t stop the run, so Bush will be a must-start RB2 if McFadden is out or “limited,” despite struggling against the 49ers in Week 6.

to consistently have blown coverages against an 0-5 team (and to lose to an 0-5 team) shows poor coaching/defensive schemes. and to not complete a pass in the 2nd and 3rd quarters shows the offense is equally screwed up. you can put $3,000 tires on a $800 vw bug, but at the end of the day all you have is an $800 bug.
they can get new players all year long but
there needs to be new coaching from top to bottom. nice as cable is, i do not see him leading the raiders to the super bowl. ever. and if they are not in it for the super bowl each year, then why are they in it?

October 20th, 2010 at 1:15 pm
Just a shame that Schillens can’t get healthy.
Those of us who do remember seeing him play breifly during pre-season and the start of last year would have to say he was our best rcvr.
He would run routes well enough and got enough separation that even JaMoron knew to throw him the ball. And as off target as JaMoron’s throws often were, Schillens would adjust and showed very good hands in securing the catch. Supposedly, he has or had tremendous speed and might be able to stretch the field in addition to being a very good posession rcvr.
There’s little doubt if he can get on and stay on the field that he’s a player.
I don’t think it’s his knee that’s kept him off the field all this time this season. I think it’s still his foot. The type of foot injury he had lingers for a long, long time. In many cases it’s career ending.
Can he ever get back on the field and stay there ? I don’t know. At this point it doesn’t seem likely. He’s been injury prone since his college days.
But I will say this, he’s one guy that I wouldn’t want to release and see him finally get healthy and make it somewhere else.
October 20th, 2010 at 1:21 pm
Somebody put a hit on Jason Campbell please, I cannot take another week of his blank stares. If he starts I’m not watching I’ll get it off the highlights.
Kyle Boller IMO just seems to be all we have in terms of a legit starter on this team as I see it. And that is purely a hope and a prayer. I know Grads can win games and play well in spurts but that aint good enough for me can one of these guy’s please stand up and give us some real hope.
My interest in Colt Brennan is purely based on his predraft projection I thpought he was a solid prospect midrounder. All based on his pure passing arm I thought he was as pure a passer as Sam Bradford but he played in a spread offense against weak opposition. However he throws a beautiful ball and has great touch. I think if he had a chance to sit in the same system for 2 years he could be as good as Tony Romo maybe not as strong an arm. I just like him.
The Rams really lucked out with Bradford man I think he’s the best QB that’s come out in maybe 5 years or more. That kid has true greatness better than Aikman as good as any I can think of they just were in the right spot at the right time and that kid was standing there. Pure luck!
