PFT: Murphy has bruised lung

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, October 26th, 2010 at 3:32 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Profootballtalk.com reports wide receiver Louis Murphy will miss the Seahawks game with a bruised lung.

The item did not cite a source.

When Raiders coach Tom Cable spoke to the Bay Area media Monday, he said he didn’t know exactly what was wrong with Murphy, saying it was “something going on in the chest area, looks to be a like a contusion, but how severe it is and how much it limits him is really the question.”

Murphy collided with teammate Marcel Reece along the sideline. Murphy leads Raiders wide receivers with 21 receptions for 337 yards but has just five receptions over his last three games since sustaining a clavicle injury.

Cable indicated that rookie Jacoby Ford would likely have an increased role if Murphy were injured.

“I’m excited about being able to count on him and where he can help this team now,” Cable said. “I think his role can expand and is certainly ready to.”

Pathetic how he dances with the DEs. I guess that may work out in pass protection, but his run blocking leaves a lot to be desired.

  115. J Hill Says:

Seattle is not brave enough to play an 8 man front to stop our running game.

DMac and our beefy Oline against simple 7 man fronts should work to our advantage most weeks.

When the Raiders actually play the defense they are labeled to play, Al Davis’ man to man, they are OUTSTANDING!

  143. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

The Raiders pulled a Steve Spurrier Sunday, nothing more. They didn’t score 59 points. Nobody does. Once you get beyond 40 and it’s an insurmountable lead, the other team has given up at that point. You either run out the clock, or you show your ass and run it up. Raiders did the latter.

Kick a FG and made it 45-14. This is a game of men and men generally don’t like to see other men kicked when they’re down. The Raiders are going to pay for this. And they’re not that good of a team. It’s not like in the ’70s when the Raiders could rub people in s’t and not have to worry about retribution because they were so good. This Raider team has some serious vulnerabilities.

Sorry to call this one. JHill, we better be DAMN concerned about containing these next two running teams. Marshawn Lynch can run the ball and KC has shown an ability to run up the middle and around the sides.

The Raiders better be all about the run defense because these two teams are going to try like hell to establish the run 1st….especially two teams that struggle a little protecting the QB.

With no John Henderson, this team will be challenged and McClain better have his wrestling tights on.

That’s the biggest problem with the Raiders when they don’t have a real coach. They think a big win like this is the mountain top, especially against a division rival like Denver. I’ll bet there isn’t one player, except for maybe guys like Nnamdi, Miller, and Gradkowski, who realizes this football team is below .500 and would have to play with the same intensity they did Sunday in at least 7 of the 9 remaining games this year to make it to late January with the REAL teams in this league. Just those 3. That’s it. Everyone else on the team? Hasn’t even crossed their mind. They’re just so happy they beat Denver, and that Mr. Davis is happy. That’s why the Raiders suck every year.

  187. SnB Production Says:

    Jhill,

I am all about that Denver game but not its time to throw a tad of realism on that game.

Denver IS NOT a physical running team.

Those runs by Gore count. Period. We cannot expect the Raiders to get 21 point 1st QTR leads in order for the run defense to kick in.

They still have shown the ability to get run the ffff over.

They better be targeting that run game man. Don’t let Denver and San Diego get you off target.

San Fran was a run 1st team….like SEattle and KC will be…and when we face run 1st…things have not worked out.

Focus on stopping the run and make Cassel and Hasselback beat our secondary and pass rush.

Give me more 3rd 7s and 3rd and 8s and the Raiders will be in 1st place going into the bye.

    I’ll set it at 82.7

    Over/Under?

  190. SnB Production Says:

    1. For a third straight game, the Patriots elected to use Vince Wilfork at defensive end, starting Gerard Warren for a second time at Wilfork’s usual position of nose tackle. The Patriots did not suffer any ill effects from not having Wilfork at nose tackle, holding the Chargers to just two yards per carry in the game. Provided that Warren is sturdy inside, having Wilfork on the outside gives him an opportunity to win more one-on-one matchups, and also provides the team with a large body on the outside. The Patriots may have taken a page from the Ravens on this one, who use Haloti Ngata at defensive end and Kelly Gregg at nose tackle, keeping them stout against the run.

    2. One of Wilfork’s better individual plays came on a second-and-10 run by Ryan Mathews in the red zone, when Wilfork drove RT Jeromey Clary inside and then shed the block to make a 1-yard stop that helped to hold the Chargers to a field goal

As far as head coaches go, I would put Cable in the bottom 5, easily. Even he knows he’s not in charge.

  254. priesttj Says:

Where the Pat’s rank vs the run is further proof that big isn’t neccessrily better. They have two great DT’s in Wilfork and Warren and they have problems stopping the run. Wilfork is a probowl player. It takes an entire defense to stop the run, discipkine in gaps and tackling is way more important than a big fat guy in the middle.

Now it is better if you have both a great big guy in he middle with a disciplined team and great tackling. But just because you have Big John doesn’t stop the run, hell big John came from one of the worse defenses in the league.

  255. hwnrdr Says:

Each of the games I have been partying within 2 blocks of INVESCO and watching all of the donkey fans leaving at half time (they only stayed that long to finish their beers was a wonderful sight to see.

  260. priesttj Says:

What I wuld like to see is DMC and Reece mixed into the passing game more it’l take a ton f pressure off those young WR’s. Both DMC and Reece are fast enough to stretch a defense if it’s putting too many in the box. But I think we’ll be fine if JLH is used properly with DHB (separate them) and use Ford as a 3rd WR. That is a ton of speed on the perimeter there is no way they can cover it. The only thing is can we get the ball to them accurately deep. Rotate in Nick Miller enough and i think we can put up 30 on the Seachickens.

Priest, you seem to be a sucker for height/speed like Mr. Davis. I haven’t seen that result in the catches. Would prefer more Schillens or Zach Miller types who can run routes, find open spots and catch the ball. All of our other receivers fit the same mold (run fast….run fast….)

    ———————————
Tim Brown when he was drafted was speed (not so much hight/weight). But he ended up being a great route runner which got it done. Randy Moss is just a freak of nature…don’t think that any of our 2nd, 3rd or 4th string guys are even compared to these guys. JLH, Ford etc. are FAST guys. But they’re not great route runners, haven’t shown they have ways to get open, and aren’t particularly the big/physical type receivers either.

  291. raiderzmaverick Says:

Heck, maybe with a QB who throws to the WRs the other guys will look great once they get a chance to step into the game. I really hope so. If Grads plays he finds a way to get the ball into the WRs hands. But if Campbell plays I don’t see them making a lot of catches.

  296. Guy Says:

maverick you’re right, Schilens is my favorite receiver on the raiders when hes healthy. Actually, its a toss up between him and miller. Sucks that hes always injured, started noticing him in late 2008

But none of you are smart enough to know he drafted the players you like as well as the players you don’t like. Schilens is prototypical size speed height guy. Yet you like him and make fun of the others when they may have much better careers than he will.

And if DHB and Murphy aren’t big rec’s then maybe you need glasses. DHB might be the most physical WR we have. Chaz should be but he hasn’t shown it thus far.

I think you’re passing judgement on a kid lng before you should this kid hasn’t had an opportunity like most WR t play with the same QB enough to get timing down and once they really start to get him the ball on a regular basis you’ll see what I mean.

If he drops it it’s his fault. But IMO they miss him a lot more than he drops it.

If one of these QB’s can just stay on the field and be prductive enough to allow him to setle in and progress all your concerns would be met.

  319. EMRaiders Says:

So no Murphy this game. Hmmm… maybe this is a good game to try and experiment with DMac playing in the slot?

Run 2 WRs 2RBs 1TE formations (also called Pro set) and then motion him. Have Bush be the FB, and then you can run all sorts of plays out of that formation. The Seaweeds won’t know what hit them. Miller can help block in some, and Bush and McF on others.

I would go with DHB and Ford in the first couple drives and see what happens, if DHB is unproductive then he’s probably ill again, so send him to the locker room to watch the game from there again, and put in Nick.

Nick and Ford starting would catch the Seachickens off guard I think. But I’m sure the Godfather will use this game as a chance to make DHB the main target.

I would also gameplan shotgun formations with Miller out wide, and Nick in the slot, and switch all three, Ford, Miller, Nick, and even McF in the slot from that formation. Get all your playmakers on the field at the same time!

Maverick you’re clueless none of these guy’s has been around long enough for you to make jidgements about what their careers will ultimately be. All you idiots is figure out a way to take shots at the owner.

    —————————————————
Wow, you’re a bit off your rocker here.
Firstly, I didn’t bring up DHB, because he does have the height and weight. The others do not have that which I mentioned. What I am saying is that the WRs that we have to play now (Nick Miller, JLH, Ford) are not known especially for their route running or hands. They are small/light speedsters. I didn’t say they will NEVER do anything or what their carreers will ultimately be. You seem to want to pick a fight about something which isn’t there.

Re-read what I said and calm yourself down and try to post a reply which is sequetiur to what I actually wrote.

I don’t think the Seahawks have given up allowed a 100 yard rusher, so this definitely will be a good test. I liked that a lot of dungver players were laying on the ground when the raiders ran to the left side though. Okung is also most likely out.

LOL! The Raiders are 5th in points per game. 25.6 The Broncos are a funny football team to allow that a$$ whipping to occur.

  337. priesttj Says:

    Drexl

Don’t be too surprised if the Raiders do that to a few teams this year. Of course I’m not talking about that kind of point total but I am talking about the explosiveness of this offense.

When you really look at this team offensively it has speed at every position in some cases Olympic speed. That is stressful on any defense and when it is prodcutive as it was Sunday, they can hit you with 21 points in a hurry. DMC can go 80 and any of the rec’s can go the distance on one touch. That is frightening for any defense.

The niners were extremly lucky because we almost exploded on them several times. But the QB was in a funk and the niners were allowed to sit on the running game. But They were lucky.

  338. priesttj Says:

Just a crazy thought, there aren’t too many offenses with a FB that can run like the one we have. If he getsin open field he will shock you with his speed. He runs a legit sub 4.5 40.

The entire rest of the roster SHOULD be in full competition.

Right now the players that should play at the rest of the positions are those that are producing on the field and winning these games.

Cable’s best move right now would be to continue to drive more competition across the roster. Especially the QB, WR, Safeties and O-Line/D-Line.

  349. SnB Production Says:

    Priesttj,

I have always been on board and then some. I go to games and live and die with these guys…I will not accept questioning of this.

As for the roster. I am about playing production. Sure the coaches will do what they feel is right. Just like I do in my job despite other opinions.

But my opinion, which is based on being 2500 miles away, is that the Raiders have to be more open to getting more players on the field when there is not a clear cut starter.

We shouldn’t be in week 8 until guys like Nick Miller and Jacoby Ford get time. No receiver, Murphy or DHB, have seized the job so much that the others don’t see the field.

As for the QB position. Campbell has led the Raiders to important victories over Denver and San Diego. That’s production He should start until he screws up. Gradkowski is not good enough, nor has he done enough yet to earn “Can’t Lose Job to Injury” status.

More competition is what I want to see here on out. Producers play more….the rest rotate.

When players who are struggling and make mistakes see themselves on the bench…play will improve

The way I was brought up that’s chicken s’t. Can’t help it. It’s called values. And I know for a fact most Raider fans have them, it’s just the soulless homers like some of the people in here that embarrass the rest of us. Meanwhile, you have never given a Davis detractor props. Never. They could win 20 super bowls straight, you’ll downplay it. You’ve never once just said, so and so’s a good coach, so and so’s a good player. If they fell out with Davis, they’re garbage, in your mind. As far as Gruden coming back, why?Cable is doing a better job than most on here are giving him credit for.The team is obviously getting better all the time. Why start over when we are finally seeing some progress? If we had better talent at QB,the progress would be even more evident.

  364. 707raiders Says:

This game will speak volumes about our coaching this week, everything is set up for us to finaly win two games in a row! Hue J better come out aggressive, cable better have them ready to play. This is a home game we should win! Dmc will do his thing, but it comes down to protecting campbell. This is the true test, can cable get them over the hump and get a winning streak going???? I think so!!!

  365. lefty12 Says:

John Herrera or Ralph Barbieri-tough choice, butI think I’d rather be Herrera.Ralph is just a whiny little biotech.

  366. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

I’d rather be Ralph Barbeiri than John Herrera any day. Ralph is smarter, more objective, knows more about sports, especially football, and, more importantly, has a far better gig, with far better bosses and people to work with. Makes far more money, too, I’m certain, as he’s an on-air personality. I don’t think Ralph hates the Raiders. I think he hates Al Davis. He seems like one of those old bay area guys who liked the Raiders before Al first took them to LA, then subsequently ruined them and made them unrecognizable to fans who followed the team in the ’70s. Running Ron Wolf out and turning the Raiders from a team of football players to a team of pansies with athletic skills.

  367. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Lefty, do you think Tom Cable is a better NFL coach than Jon Gruden?

  368. lefty12 Says:

Here’s to hoping Satele can play so Jared can man the LT spot.I watched the game again, focused on him, and he was really impressive. It will be interesting to see how he does against a real speed rushing DE.

  369. lefty12 Says:

Going against my own rule but I’ll answer you-Not necessarily, but he has helped build and mold this team so with the existing roster I’d rather keep Cable.Gruden is a good coach, but I wouldn’t want him shaping the roster. He can’t handle dealing with young players and that is what our roster is composed of-young players.

  370. ambulance Says:

RAIDERS WHIPPED THE BRONCOS SO HARD THEY LOST THEIR MEMORY

“ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Shortly after playing in the Oakland Raiders’ 59-14 rout of Denver on Sunday, Broncos rookie cornerback Perrish Cox went home and watched the contest again.

Not to learn what went wrong.

Just to remember what took place after a blow to the head completely wiped out his memory of the game.

Cox suffered a head injury in the third quarter and couldn’t recall any of the details from the lopsided loss. He clearly remembers the night before and then coming to in the trainer’s room.

    In between, nothing.”

Besides,Gruden will never be a Raider coach again

    ……………

LOL. How do you know that?

  374. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Lefty, so you admit Gruden is a better NFL coach than Tom Cable. Yet you still want Tom Cable. Tell me again, who wants the Raiders to win and who wants the Raiders to lose? I want the better NFL head coach, who you admit is better. You want the lesser of the two. Wouldn’t that mathematically prove I want the Raiders to win more than you do? Seems you just want the Raiders to only win a certain way. I just want them to win. Just Win Baby. Old school Raider fan. That’s me. I don’t know what kind of trip you’re on.

  375. lefty12 Says:

Speaking of officiating and rules, they need to change the rules about what is and what isn’t a TD.If a WR is required to come down with control of the ball in the end-zone for it to be a TD,so should RBs.This crap of stretching the ball over the line and then losing control should be a fumble instead of a TD.It is the one place where they should allow the ground to cause a fumble.

  376. lefty12 Says:

Where did I say he was better?I didn’t.That is why I usually won’t even try to get in conversations with you,you try an put words in peoples mouths and twist what they say to support your argument-a tactic used by a certain political party that you have much distain for. Then you attack me because I don’t agree with you.As you so often reply-don’t bother responding, you are once again on ignore.

  377. 100PercentRaider Says:

Cable is the right coach for the job right now, provided he continues to get the team to progress. They scored 59 points in the first 7 weeks last year. This year they have been in every game but 1. I think he should keep the job if the team wins 7+ games, that would be alot of progress and our schedule down the stretch is not easy.

  378. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

I’m sorry, Lefty, I thought you grudgingly admitted that Gruden was better. Let me ask again, who do you think is better?

  379. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Lefty, wow. I wasn’t picking a fight with you at all. thought we were having a decent conversation here, and I really thought you admitted Gruden was better. Here was your original answer:

    lefty12 Says:
    October 27th, 2010 at 12:27 am

Going against my own rule but I’ll answer you-Not necessarily, but he has helped build and mold this team so with the existing roster…

    ……………….

Now, you don’t give a name, but you follow by saying he molded this team with the existing roster, which means you must be referring to the current coach. So the only way I could discern that is that you said Cable is not necessarily as good as Gruden. Which would mean Gruden is better, even if by a hair, in your view, right? You can answer the question any time, Lefty. If you think they’re equal, just say so. Just say Tom Cable and Jon Gruden are equally as effective as head coaches. Just say that’s your position. It’s one of the three, Lefty. Either you believe Gruden’s better, Cable’s better, or it’s a tie. Which is it?

  380. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

It’s unfortunate you can’t just say who’s the better coach between Gruden and Cable, Lefty. So you know what? Since you wont’ come right out and say that the current coach is better, I’m going to just go ahead and assume you think Gruden is better, but for whatever reason just don’t want to admit it. You can get mad all you want to. Again, it would be very easy for you to squash this. Just man up and tell us who you think is the better coach, and tha’ts it. It’s all over. you’re making this harder on yourself. You never had to enter this discussion in the first place, but evidently you had some points to make regarding Gruden’s head coaching ability. Your’e in the ring, Lefty. And, you’re rope a dope strategy isn’t working. Yo’ure getting pounded. Time to step in and throw a punch.

  381. Try Some Reality Says:

Guess what? The Raiders are the highest scoring team in the league! LOL! Who’d have thought?

We all know it was due to the last game but still, pretty interesting….

  382. 100PercentRaider Says:

Tampa fired Gruden because they needed to rebuild and Gruden doesnt have the patience to do that/he prefers to load his team with veterans and doesnt draft well. We are still rebuilding, and have a young roster. Even if he wanted the job, and Al wanted to give him the job, he might not necessarily be a good fit

  383. raiders22 Says:

Gruden would instantly make us at least .500, due to the fact that he demands effort. exactly what this raider team needs.
we consistently suck bc our head coach seems to have no power and the players know it.
No coach in the NFL has more power than Gruden, and he’s gonna let a player know about it.
Not saying he’s am amazing coach but I’d welcome him with open arms.

  384. lefty12 Says:

100%-exactly.He wouldn’t be a good coach for our team at this point in time-we’re too young.Gruden needs to go to a team with a veteran roster and he should have no say in personnel matters-just coach the roster the GM gives him.

  385. 100PercentRaider Says:

Raiders22- I think Cable’s strength is that he does seem to have the players respect as well as the respect of Al. Jamarcus is what was causing this team to quit, only one blowout this year and that was a horrible matchup for us no matter if we showed up or not.

  386. raiders22 Says:

I wouldn’t say we’re rebuilding at all. Yes we have holes but not 1 team in the league doesnt. We’ve got out core players on both sides of the ball, now they need to perform consistently.

Look at the Chiefs. Our roster destroys theirs on paper, yet they have a fiery and apparrently smart coach who gets everything out of them. That could easily be us right now if Cable was a legit coach.

  387. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Gruden can’t rebuild a team? How about this:

Gannon, Rice, Garner, Rison, Tyrone Wheatley, E. Allen, C. Woodson, John Ritchie, Willie Thomas…give me a f’n break.

  388. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Lefty, bottom line: Gruden is better than Cable. It’s an upgrade.

  389. raiders22 Says:

if Bruce started week 1 it would’ve been closer. Tennessee isn’t near as good as we made them look.

  390. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Raiders 22, we don’t have a quarterback. And that is the fundamental part of a rebuild. I like Grads but he really is too small. Campbell had better be playing a cellar dweller like Denver. Boller is a high functioning retard, at best. Our offensive line is a joke. Our defense is archaic and just pieced together. Our receivers bleed in the va ga ga once a month. We have a few great players, surrounded by a mishmash of overachieving athletes and bum castaways, that are castaways because they suck, not because they didn’t fit in. We need to rebuild. And I’d trust Gruden to do it as much as I’d trust anyone who’s available to us. Would Gruden be as good as parcells or pioli? No. But he’s the best we could get. I’d take his style of getting the best veterans possible and conditioning the team to play for 4 quarters.

  391. 100PercentRaider Says:

The holes on the line can be fixed quickly, but the need for a QB would still be there. People mention the 2000 Ravens and 02 Bucs as teams that won without QBs, but that was before the rule changes in 04 or 05 that made the passing game explode so much. And I would trust Jackson to develop a QB instead of blowing up the coaching staff and taking a chance on Gruden.

  392. raiders22 Says:

our o-line is improving a lot, and veldheer appears to be a keeper thank god. Bruce Campbell has way too much talent to suck his whole career. gallery is a good guard. we could use a strong center for sure. Henderson could def fit a right tackle..that line could work very well down the road.

RB: possibly best duo in the league
QB: Bruce is capable…SB? no way
WR: decent players, which can work, just ask tom brady and donavan mcnabb
    TE: stud
FB: very underrated how big of a mismatch reece can be if we were creative. start him out in traditional i, motion him out w/ a slow lb covering him, automatic completion. I realize we throw to him a lot, but he starts out flanked which gives the D plenty of time to adust coverage, doesnt really make sense. kid cant block tho.

And defense i wont waste my time, we could have Willis, Ngata, Polamalu, Nnamdi, Revis, etc. it wouldnt matter with the joke of a scheme we play.

But my point is i believe w/ another good draft and say a center in free agency our roster would be pretty dam good.

  393. 100PercentRaider Says:

I agree that it can be very good very soon. But I dont think Gruden is the, guy to do it. And Im not going to say Cable automatically is, because there hasnt been the consistency, but he has brought us out of the depths. Gruden would be a much better fit at at team like Dallas, where there are alot of veterans, established QB,etc.

  394. raiders22 Says:

    very true^

im a mild cable fan as a HC. he is a quality o-line coach. i remember when we got him there were multiple write-ups in the paper saying how it would be a great hire if kiffin could persuade him.
Doesnt seem like the brightest fella though, as far as football goes. I’d like to see him work a white board and be creative, wonder if hes capable.

  395. 100PercentRaider Says:

Yeah he is a well respected line coach back from his days at Atlanta. Hopefully he can work his magic with Veldheer and Campbell. I dont really think he is a great x’s and o’s guy, i think Al got hue jackson for that. What he is is a great motivator, and someone who is willing to work under Davis’ restrictions and do it in a way that the players still respect him. He has a vision for the kind of players he wants on his team, he has been big on getting character guys, and you see the result by this team playing hard every week even when alot of people expected them to fold just like past years. And thats all very good, but just like jeff tedford at cal, a guy doesnt deserve to stay around just because he takes a team from awful to respectable. He needs to take the next step. And the next 3 games will show us if Cable deserves to keep his job imo.

  396. raiders22 Says:

Funny you say that, I’ve been asking myself why Tedford still has a job, and then everyone is so quick to remind me how bad Cal was. I say who cares.

Anyway, it’s nice to see another fan on here with knowledge unlike d-bag Priest.
I’ll keep an eye out for your posts in the future.

    Peace bro

  397. 100PercentRaider Says:

Looking at Seattles stats…Their top 3 tacklers are DBs. Either they cant cover, or RBs are getting to the 2nd level alot. Laywer Milloy leads the team with 3 sacks. If they are going to blitz the safeties we have to find ZMiller. They have been outgained by and hold the ball less than their opponents. Hasselbeck is completing less than %60 of his passes, thrown 6 picks in 6 games and has been sacked alot. However, they have 2 special teams touchdowns, +3 in turnovers and give up 3.3 yards per rush. So the keys to the game are:
    1. Hang on to the ball!
    2. Get after Hasselbeck
    3. Strong special teams play

  398. 100PercentRaider Says:

Thanks man, Il keep an eye out also.

  399. raiders22 Says:

theyre getting solid d-tackle play out of journey-men, which is allowing them to stop the run.
weak end play should allow us to get to the edge on them w/ mcfadden.

their secondary doesnt scare me at all.
nnamdi will completely own mike williams, not even a catch if he follows him all game.
if we stop marshawn and forsett we will win.

but hey we are the raiders who knows

  400. 100PercentRaider Says:

Mike Williams on third down: 14 catches, 130 yards, 10 1st downs, gotta keep an eye out for that too.

  401. SilverNBlackPA Says:

    Mornin’ a.m. crew.

I took a look at a list of available WR free agents, in case they’d decide to sign one if Murphy is out long term.

It’s depressing. So depressing, they might as well just stick with the young, inexperienced guys they have. You know when old-azz, washed up Laveraneus Coles and injured-to-hell-and-gone Antonio Bryant are the two best options, it’s a bad situation.

  402. SilverNBlackPA Says:

I was reading up on the Seahawks and one of the reasons they are so good against the run is that they almost always put Lawyer Milloy up in the box. That leaves Earl Thomas alone back there, playing a position not unlike Michael Huff.

Thomas is a stud and is already pretty damn good, but he’s still apparently prone to mistakes. After all, if Huff, who is talented, still struggles after 5 years, a rookie is gonna be out of sorts a lot.

That’s hopefully a situation HuJax can exploit.

Also, they apparently have trouble defending the screen. McFadden and Reece coming out of the backfield could be a major weapon.

  403. hwnrdr Says:

    Good Morning Nation!!!
    I swear I seen a 4eva sighting in here last night…
Anyways, can we get 2 in a row this Sunday?

  404. Kirk Says:

Sunday’s game boils down to the Raiders continuing to run misdirection on offense and blitzing on defense. If we revert back to our vanilla schemes, we will lose.

  405. SilverNBlackPA Says:

I said it yesterday and I’ll say it again: there are 3 simple keys to victory

    1) Stay out of 3rd and long
    2) Pick on Kelly Jennings or Walter Thurmond. I’ll add something here and say force Lawyer Milloy into coverage; he’s a good run supporter but his coverage skills have faded. He’s almost full time in the hybrid linebacker position that MM34 sometimes plays. If he has to cover Miller, Zach will win every time.
    3) Get in Hasselbeck’s face and force mistakes. He’s been prone to that the last few years.

Carroll has the Seahawks headed in the right direction, but their schedule has been soft so far. I think people are overrating them. Obviously I’m just a semi-pro blogger, but I think if those 3 things are done, the Raiders can expose them.

We win those two and you will see a different team out of the bye.

  419. SilverNBlackPA Says:

I think what the team needs more than anything right now is confidence. Real confidence too, not just bravado. They need to learn how to win. Other than Seymour, does anyone on the roster have a clue how to win or what it means to be a winner in the NFL? I can’t think of anyone. I think that’s the reason for the continual faceplants, ultimately.

If this team starts to believe in itself, puts together a winning streak and begins to function like a well oiled machine, it could be scary. Can it happen? Sure hope so.

  420. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

Not that it really matters, but I don’t believe this to be true.

Troy Smith didn’t start one preseason game that year. He had played well in the backup role, and was set to start his first preseason game, when he came down with the illness. If he played well, he could have beaten out Flacco, but as of the point he was injured, he was the #2 QB in a QB competition, nothing more nothing less.

Looking back at the 2009 draft @ the time we did not do a bad job drafting a WR in the first round. If we would have filled another position and taken a WR in the second round Most of the premiere WRs would have been gone. Now there could have been a chance DHB was still there but like I heard he was up high on the draft boards for a WR and at the time I still think he had the most upside to help down the road. All of our injuries forced him out on the field quickly. Now I will say it would have been nice to have Kenny Britt on the team and don’t forget Louis Murphy and Mitchell were taken in this draft and they are making a contribution every game.

i love jared veldheer, (i still think he should play center) and am looking forward to he and gallery plowing hiways thru nfl defenses for years to come..(who said gallery is a bust?)can you imagine a line with gallery weldheer campbell at the core.. dmac reminds me of bo jackson when he runs like he did sunday, not as much pure power, more evasive.. very effective. who was it that said dmac is a bust? so looking forward we will have dmac running behind gallery veldheer campbell, oh my god!!!!
it is going to be fun for a change..
i said i thought tom cable didn’t cut it as a head coach at this level.. I WAS WRONG. i think he is totally different from the majority of nfl coaches. most of whom are crafty and full of surprises and schemes, no cable is straight out, “this is what we are going to do, you guys try to stop us!” it is the epitome of the raider way! no?

    CJL,

I think now we’re seeing why Al Davis laughed in the coaches faces when they said they wanted to keep Stevie Brown & Hiram Eugene on the roster instead of Mike Mitchell!
    ********
I still dont know that that is true. Its definitely believable, but there is no actual proof. All 3 are on the roster now anyways so its a moot point.

  483. RaiderRockstar Says:

    Harvin had Favre
Maclin had McNabb, Vick & Kolb
    Nicks had Eli Manning
    Britt had Young & Collins

all of these WR’s had a better QB than DHB

    Russell, Gradkowski & Campbell

the only fair comparison imo would be Mike Crabtree in SF (who is also outplaying him!) LOL

First of all I am a brotha, but I think Al Davis might be a reverse racist when it comes to WR’s. I like ford, but Nick Miller should be the one that steps in for Ford. he has the hands and the spead to make something happen. Has he ever had a white WR on his team????

Freddie B. And Al usually shoots for white boy tight ends.

Hired first black coach of the modern era

    First Super Bowl-winning QB

I don’t think Nick Miller’s problem is that he’s white. I thik his problem is that he’s like 5′8″ and undrafted.

  520. Raider O Says:

I’m happy we won, but look at the facts:
1- Denver was 2-4, they can’t run, and they don’t have a great defense.
2- we matchup well against a team that can’t run!
3- we are 3-4, but we should be 5-2.
4- we don’t adjust well at halftime.
5- we are not always prepared to play.

  524. Raider O Says:

If we don’t finish .500 or better, then we should fire Cable.

  530. LA to TheBay Says:

Starting O Line would ideally be the one we went in to Denver with.

Veldheer-Gallery (great duo in that game, wow!)-Satele (the line blocked well despite him)-Coop-Walker

C, RG, RT could be improved upon, but Coop had a pretty solid day, especially when pulling.

I believe Cable said two spots didn’t finsh their blocks well. By process of elimination, must be Satele and Walker.

  531. Raider O Says:

    Bo,

    1- Harbaugh
2- bring back Gruden. It’s a perfect team for him. Good D, good rushing attack, and 2 vet QBs such he loves. Maybe not BG since he let him go in TB.

    You got that right RRS,

We need to exploit the healthy talent we have now. The guys that are banged up, rest em and be full strength for Mia and Pit. Those 2 games are going to be key if we want to go to the postseason or just be another spoiler.

  619. Jmackraider12 Says:

we actually ran alot of zone cutbacks on denver, most of our big plays came from zone blocking, but mixing it with that power blocking and unbalanced line is very very effective, its like what Cam Cameron did in baltimore when he landed there, i think HJACK’s philosophy has alot in common with cams, i like that, and as an offense we are only scratching the surface of what we can do…IMO

  637. Jimbo Says:

I’m not that worried about Pittsburgh. I think we smash them. But I am worried about losing to a lesser team. This team has to learn to keep the intensity level as high as it was in Denver.

  638. Jmackraider12 Says:

So guys lets go around and talk RAIDER FRANCHISES IN MADDEN!!
    1. Whats the longest raider franchise in madden you have ever had?
    2. What kind of Offense did you run.
    3. Who was your Big Time Players Etc….
Im currently on the off season of my 4th year with madden 2010, i put accelerators and bonus packages on Campbell and the whole O-line the first year and their ratings went sky high… I run kind of like a spread all the time with Bush and DMAC always in the Back field or motioned out to wide,(they are the best to weapons on the team, and Miller)
DHB is a 92, Murphy is a 90, and schilenz is a 89..(hint in my 2nd year i threw bombs to DHB all year with an accelorator on his rating, he went to a 88 in that year alone….

  639. Dakota Says:

Now we are going to smash Pittsburgh?

Don’t go off the deep end on me Jimbo!

  640. LA to TheBay Says:

Although I will give Al credit. The 09 squad could have won a lot more games and this team should be 4-3 minimum.

But, like Cable said we gotta live in reality right?

Which reminds me, gotta go play Madden. D’Brickeshaw and Nicks hold down the line pretty well for Schaub and Alex Mack blows open a lotta holes up the middle for Jamaal Charles.

Oh and DHB is a beast. Keith Bullock makes a great SS, too.

  641. DMAC Says:

I didn’t get the MM head-up against Tebow last Sunday, but maybe I get to see MM smash Hines Ward.

  642. Jimbo Says:

lol common man…Al does what we all do in madden, when in doubt draft the player with the best forty, lol, Cant hate on al anymore man, the team is intact bro..the team is indeed intact, more talented then i thought originaly this year, so much damn talent

  644. Jimbo Says:

We could have taken Hakeem Nicks over DHB….think about that?

Dude is a stud, maybe the top WR now. Size 4XL hands. You watch him and he dominates helpless DB’s.

    wtf was Al thinking?

  645. Jimbo Says:

Speed and size are great for Madden, but doesn’t translate to the real game.

  646. Jmackraider12 Says:

Also, the playcalling against denver was perfect..with campbell its all about playcalling, and i think if he continues to get game reps with our offense and JACKSON starts to design the offense around his stregths, he will be our starter, if he keeps winning i see no reason to put grads back in..

  647. DMAC Says:

  649. LA to TheBay Says:

    Jmack.

I always bolster the O Line as priority one. Never have used acceplerators. Would probably make life easier. Always have to wheel and deal that first year.

Varied passing attack with a good pass-catching RB and stretch-the-field speedsters and one solid possesion guy. I like the Saints playbook.

Defense I’m usually a 3-4 or multiple D, although this year in Madden, I’ve got Henderson and Seymour at DT (87 and 98 ovr, respectively) and Wimbley is a 94 DE and traded shaughnessy straight up for Dumerville, who is a 99 DE (Denver couldn’t wait to get rid of him).

Run a 4-3. LBs still need another year to bulk up but OJ Atogwe at FS and a converted Keith Bullock at SS make up for that a bit.

I went into MNF with 29 points, trailing by 60 points, and the other guy has the Giants kicker. Figure I am sunk. But I ended up winning 104-102. I had Nicks, Eli, and Bradshaw. It’s fun to win like that when you dont have much hope to begin with.

  662. LA to TheBay Says:

Funny thing about Madden is I typically do build a great Al Davis type team.

They’re almost always fast as hell (this year a bit different cuz I’m only in season 1), can usually bring heat with just 4 guys and an occasional well-timed blitz.

Play a lot more zone blitz this year due to personel but traditionally get the best DBs in the game and go man 60-75%.

Usually big armed gunslinger QB. Again, a bit different this year with the availability of Matt Schaub (Houston got Campbell in the deal and are like 1-10, lol).

Schaub is just deadly accurate and I can do a lot of different things in the pass game.

Jamaal Charles and Brian Westbrook tear it up outta the backfield. Next year, need a more evry-down back though.

Charles is good for big chunks but can’t go against a tough stacked up D 20-30 times.

AIG, the draft is always hit or miss bro

nobody strikes gold with each pick, every year

the teams that generally do well are the ones that plug holes and plan ahead. that way by the time somebody retires or their contract is up a player has 1-3 years to develop before being thrown to the wolves

not very often a rookie comes in and takes the league by storm, especially a Top 15 pick that goes to an awful football team

  693. 100PercentRaider Says:

I have yet to see DHB drop a pass this year, he just hasnt been thrown to enough. the kid works his @ss off, and we havent seen the results yet, but a kid with that much talent and desire is way too young to write off right now. For now, they should try and get him some quick passes, hitches, outs, screens, etc, so he can run with the ball. DBs have to give him space cuz of his speed so those routes should be there
