Raiders put out for good cause

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, October 27th, 2010 at 10:13 pm in Oakland Raiders.

There’s a difference between lip service and a serious effort toward a greater good.

The Raiders, in conjunction with the NFL Network and Comcast, helped inaugurate refurbished physical education facilities at Roosevelt Middle School in Oakland as part of the Keep Gym in School Program.

Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha is the national spokesperson for the program, which stresses the importance of physical activity to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Over the past two years, the program has awarded $600,000 in grants to 45 schools.

More than 670 students participated in a pep rally Tuesday led by Asomugha and participated in various activities with Raiders players and executives on hand.

A photo gallery of the event is at this link on Raiders.com, although there apparently are no photos of Raiders CEO Amy Trask mixing it up with some eighth graders in a basketball game and coming away with a black eye after an inadvertent head butt.

This year’s Keep Gym in School campaign will honor an “NFL Network PE Teacher of the Year” which can be nominated by the public at www.keepgyminschoolcom between Sept 1 and Jan. 31 with the winner announced at an even tin New York City during the NFL draft week.

I agree with your Favre rant.

It seems fishy to me that others get into trouble, Big Ben, Tiger Woods, and holy mother of all things sacred Brett Favre shows sends a dong pic to a hot chick, and he can just tell the reporters, “It’s a league matter” and blow them off, and the questions stop there. People are more worried about “will he or wont he” continue his Cal Ripken-like streak.

Who cares? It’s all about his ego. His everyman wrangler jeans persona. I aint buying it. He’s a phony.

  • Jimbo

To this day, Tiger Woods can’t get thru an interview without being hounded with personal questions.

Big Ben will probably have to lay low in interviews like Kobe for a few years till his mistake blows over.

But Bret freaking Favre who walks on water is going to retire from football and probably take over Jon Gruden’s spot on MNF, when Gruden takes over the Cowboys.

  • AirborneRaider

I hope he doesn’t play the rest of the way.

Didn’t you know? Ford was a pick by Davis. He automatically gets the back up spot because of that. I think we’ll see N.Miller because JLH or Ford will get lit up.

And you dont think Nikki gonna get lit up too? lol

Yahoo is stretching it to call Smith a “former player”.

That’s like calling Danny Southwick a former player, dont ya think?

Brett is not going into the MNF booth. And I would bet money that John Fox is more likely to take over for the cowgirls than Gruden.

Dakota thinks DMAC deserves some sort of credit for finally earning his $$$$. We all know it was Coach Southwick who rescued him from the dung heap of Alamedan infamy.

anyone know how to keep Marshawn from going into Beast Mode this weekend? yeah, he’s prone to coughing up the rock at times, but let’s hope that Oaktown distractions get to him and get him in subpar mode.

    **********************************************

Only reason we get that comparision is becaue they are both little white guys.

Nick Miller’s ONE CAREER catch was longer than any one Welker has had in a year.

Welker has elite hands, great route-running and slower than crap. Miller is all speed, with some impressive athleticism, but I’m sure his hands and route-running aren’t even in the same universe as Welker.

We won’t see Miller catching 12, seven-yard crossing patterns in a game. We won’t see Welker making leaping catches 40 yards down the sideline.

    Complete opposite types of players.

  • Jimbo

    C’mon man!

Comparing Welker to Miller isn’t fair. Welker has a Tom Brady to throw to him. He has a real coach coaching him. You flip flop the situations, and Miller could be as good as Welker on the Patriots, but if Welker were to come here, his career would tailspin.

  • Jimbo

We got Sanjay Lal as a WR coach. You think Wes Welker would take instruction from him?

Much better parallel, if we HAVE to compare him to a white dude.

I’m thinking Deon Branch or Mike Thomas, as far as smaller WR’s go.

  • AirborneRaider

I’m making the comparison that they initially came in as KR/PR return specialist. I can see Miller making an impact on the receiving game as well as returns. We don’t know how good his hands are, yet. We do know that he’s made one big catch in the season and one big catch in preseason, too. I think we’re bound to see more big plays from him if given the chance.

They are and I don’t see the comparison either. A lot of the elite slot players are slow as hell, they’re just 7-11 because of good route-running, hands and play design.

Now, to say Nick Miller has no future is another matter entirely. None of us know that. How much Nick Miller have we really seen?

Other than a dropped punt last preseason (one this year too maybe? not sure), I haven’t seen anything but positives from the guy.

Let’s reserve judgement on him for a while.

Undrafted doesn’t mean no good and #1 overall doesn’t mean good.

  • Bauce 4 Real

    Davonne Bess=Oakland native!…..BAUCE

  • mistic1

Miller wasnt drafted, there is a reason for it. Ford was drafted, and is even more explosive then miller. Ford has made some plays on offense, is ahead on the depth chart, so why shouldnt he get more action than miller? I think more bubble screens and gohost revers motions will be good for both of these little guys, and could cause major problems for the seahag defense. the seahags are solid up the gut, but you can exploit them on the perimeter.

Any one that says ford is ahead of miller because he is a Davis guy and miller isnt, is wrong. news flash every single person that has ever worn silver & black is paid by davis. he wont have anyone on the team that he doesnt want. End of story.

  • SilverNBlackPA

Actually, best case scenario Nick Miller = Dexter McCluster.

Return specialist and can be used in a versatile role on the offense.

    I agree!

But only because of what is in our WR cupboard. If Deion Branch or Mike Thomas, or TO were on our team, I’d want Nick to continue to ride the pine. But the thought of DHB starting makes you wonder if we can’t force the opportunities on the young guys.

I agree. Only reason we se the comparison is cuz he’s little white guy.

I’d love to see more of a spread offense but I don’t think pass blocking is up to par yet.

Ford and Miller could be dangerous underneath. Problem is we don’t take advantage of anything underneath.

We don’t take what the defense gives us. That’s just a cute sying, we take what we want, lol.
