Defining Raiders moment still to come

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, October 28th, 2010 at 9:50 am in Oakland Raiders.

There’s some optimism in the Raiders locker room, as voiced by cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, that the Raiders may wind up looking back at the Denver game as the point where they turned around their season.

“It has the potential,” Asomugha said. “Anytime that you’re coming off a loss and you can put together a game like that, absolutely it has the potential to string into a number of victories going down the road and then you can point back to this game and say, ‘Oh, this was the game that we got over the hump.’ So, that’s our goal.”

A 59-14 win over Denver was a magnificent deviation from the norm, but can no way be extrapolated into the normal NFL season. It will probably be another decade until the Raiders put another 45-point margin on someone. It was in fact a decade since they last did it.

On Dec. 19, 1999, in their second season under Jon Gruden, the Raiders had a win even more impressive than Sunday’s win in Denver.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers came to town in first place in the NFC Central, with the NFL’s second-ranked defense and three potential Hall of Fame players in Derrick Brooks, Warren Sapp and John Lynch.

They were 9-4 and would take eventual Super Bowl champ St. Louis to the wire in the NFC Championship game.

Final score: Raiders 45, Bucs 0.

Oakland rushed for 262 yards, with Tyrone Wheatley (19 carries, 111 yards) and Napoleon Kaufman (9 carries, 122 yards) both going over 100. Against the Oakland defense, the Bucs crossed the 50-yard line exactly twice _ and on one of those possessions punted from the Oakland 49-yard line.

The win evened the Raiders record even at 7-7 and on the periphery of the playoff chase.

What did this momentum get them? A 23-20 loss to the Chargers in San Diego the following week. The Raiders had 46 yards rushing and were shredded for 325 yards passing by Jim Harbaugh.

Every once in awhile a game gets out of control. It’s what happened against the Bucs, and it’s what happened against the Broncos. The Raiders were the better team that day, yes, but the losing teams weren’t nearly as bad as the score indicated. It was simply a quirk of two teams at one point in time having a completely opposite experience and in no way indicative of the usual week-in, week-out grind that is the NFL.

Actually, the Raiders defining moment came two weeks after the Tampa game, and the week following the Chargers debacle.

Trailing 17-0 to the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium, the Raiders came back and won 41-38 in overtime. The game knocked the Chiefs out of the playoffs and was the springboard for a 12-4 season which brought Oakland a division title and a spot in the AFC championship game.

Unlike the Tampa game, the Chiefs game epitomized what it really takes to win in the NFL _ a willingness and even an eagerness to fight back from a deficit, to make plays in all three phases at crucial times, and to prevail on a day when the end result could have gone either way.

Turnarounds are made on those kinds of games, rather than the rare blowout which is actually more of a statistical fluke than a true indicator of a team’s strength.

With the Seattle Seahawks and Chiefs coming to town the next two weeks, the Raiders will have their chance to prove they can win an important game when every break isn’t going their way.

Is it too early to start the cam newton campaign for the silver and black? this dude maybe one of the greatest college qb’s I have ever seen. he is the ultimate weapon.

    **************************************

Ever seen? The guy has played 6 games.

Like you said that there is a reason Nick Miller wasn’t drafted (which is true) there is a reason Cam Newton played JC football.

He is a convict, with no arm or accuracy.

Wouldn’t be suprised if he became a Josh Cribbs (former college QB) type player in the NFL.
    ==========================================================

read the post carefully I said “maybe” have ever seen. he must prove it through time.

For the record he did get into some trouble when he was younger, but he has credited that single incident for changing his life. he bought a stolen laptop from a class mate.

newton started at florida, when tebow came back for his final year he transferred to a jc, because he wanted to play. it wasnt that he was kicked off or couldnt play at the college level. After leading his jc to a national championship, he was recruited by Oklahoma, ole miss, and auburn.

You couldnt be more wrong about his accuracy, not only is he accurate, he has already learned how to throw receivers open by leading them and putting touch on it when he needs it.he has a very quick delivery, and he doesnt turn the ball over. he is a natural team leader.

I saw the lsu game over the weekend, and i have to agree with former 12 nfl qb Gary danielson’s assesment, who stated ” as a passer newton is a really good nfl qb prospect, and rates only slightly behind mathew stafford, as of this moment.”

i however give newton the edge over stafford as a total qb, because of his home run threat abilty running the ball.

  • raiderlaker1980

Your warriors are building a better team though, I gotta hand it to em, would’ve helped them a whole hell of a lot to move up a couple slots for Cousins, but hey, at least you have 5 guys on the court who almost compliment each other now, next step is a wing and a frontcourt guy who really believes in playing defense.

  • Just Fire Baby

Newton will crash back to earth as a passer soon enough I believe.

For his sake, he needs to go back to school next year and learn the intricies of the position.

But if he gets a first round grade, he will probably jump on it like a cheap laptop.

  • McRaider5150

If Jason Campbell has the Balls that Bruce Grad has, her would be one hell of a QB. Jason is just too afraid of making mistakes. That’s what keeps him from making big plays at QB. Grad plays with fire and I think has more confidence in his abilities. His skill are just limited. IMO

I recommend basketball as a hobby for DHB. Those BBall players have good hands. Look at Antonio Gates, and T. Gonzales.

Learn to have a handle in a street court game, and you hone your instincts and coordination for the oblong ball.

That ’99 win against KC that year was epic for me. My ex-wife & I were in central Missouri for the holidays and they’re huge KC fans, of course. My ex & I had a bet that if the Raiders won, she would have to wear my Raiders gear around their little, crappy, podunk town for a day. I remember watching that game in her folks living room with them gloating at knocking the Chiefs our of the playoffs. People from Missouri really hate Raider fans from Cali. You can imagine the types of looks she got wearing Raiders gear into WalMart the next day.

Monta is one dimensional, and a head case. trade him while he still has value. he would fit with a team that needs scoring off the bench,a goo defense, and lots of vets that have won a ring to keep him in check. he would be good with a team like boston coming in off the pine, im not sure whet the celts would want to give up for him though.

A lot of nfl teams a running a version of the spread, the leauge is changing. Brady and brees make their living in a spread.

He doesnt need to run it the way he does in college, he is a passer first. How ever having said that he is every bit as dangerous on the run as vick or young, and they have killed teams running the ball when the play breaks down.

i would love to see him come to the town, play behind campbell and learn. then put him in that spread pistol with dmac like we saw last week. It would be crazy, but probably wont happen, i dont think we will be able to draft high enough to get him.
