Raiders’ Saturday notebook

News, notes and quotes from the week of practices and media availability leading into Sunday’s Raiders-Seahawks game at the Coliseum:

Pete Carroll gave glowing reviews to former Cal star Marshawn Lynch for all he’s added to the Seahawks running game, but the truth is all the addition has done so far is get Seattle up to average.

“Using he and Justin Forsett has given us a 1-2 punch that gives us attitude runner and a change-of-pace quickness guy that’s special, and gives us something special for our running game,” Carroll said.

Since Lynch arrived, the Seahawks ran for 111 yards in a 23-20 win over the Chicago Bears, followed by a 144-yard effort in last week’s 22-20 win over Arizona.

Lynch’s contribution? He’s carried 41 times for 133 yards, a 3.2 average not even up to the subpar 3.8 average Lynch had in his last year in Buffalo and his first four games with the Bills this season. He had 17 carries for 44 yards against the Bears, and 24 rushes for 89 yards against Arizona _ with a big chunk coming off a 39-yard run.

Seattle ranks 24th in the NFL in rushing and averages 3.7 yards per carry. They’ve got 27 rushing first downs. Following the Raiders 328-yard explosion in Denver, the Raiders are third in rushing at 158.4 yards and fourth in rushing first downs with 52 and in a three-way tie for second in rushing touchdowns with eight.

— You hear this as a criticism of coaching all the time _ he wasn’t playing to win, he was trying not to lose.

Carroll made a rather amazing admission in that Job 1 at this stage of the Seahawks development is exactly that _ trying not to lose.

“You have to avoid the kinds of things that turn games around and give teams a chance to knock you off,” Carroll said. “That’s the first step and the critical step with football forever.”

If Seattle strives to play error-free football, “it doesn’t mean you’re going to win every game but you’re giong to have a chance in every game. And that’s what we’re trying to get done right now.”

Cable couldn’t quite wrap his mind around that thought process.

“Personally, that’s not in my brain. That’s not how I look at things. We’re playing to win,” Cable said.

When it was suggested that playing it safe, avoiding errors, was simply a first step in building a program, Cable said, “In thar regard, sure, I mean everybody’s trying to do that, but at the end of the game, to make a statement that we’re playing not to lose, that’s incredible to me.”

— Lots of levity and light moments with the Raiders before practice, with jokes and receivers engaging in a game of what looked to be “hot potato” before getting down to business.

It’s fine if the team knows how to turn its attention to the matter at hand _ I remember 49ers defensive backs Deion Sanders, Tim McDonald and Merton Hanks being involved in an intense game of rock, paper, scissors the week leading up to the NFC championship game against Dallas _ and Cable is convinced the Raiders do just that.

He even made the observation to his son, who was visiting and watching practice.

“They know I’m OK with having fun, but it’s time to work, you work, and they’re very good that way,” Cable said. “I was telling my boy this is kind of how this team is, they’re laughing and joking and then we went to a team period and it was business.”

A lot of the good vibes have to do with the Broncos win, according to cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.

“You could see it’s not as tense,” Asomugha said. “There’s a confidence level that guys have that, `We can do this and we can win games.’ So we’ve gone out and we’ve practiced like it and we’ve gone through meetings like it, so it’s good. It’s not like we’re relaxing, but it’s good to feel that sense of confidence that we can get the job done.”

On thing that hasn’t been discussed this week is winning back-to-back games. Cable said he was going to trust “the process” of preparing for Seattle and not worrying about what came before or what comes after.

“I don’t know if he wanted to put it in our brains like that,” Asomugha said. “I don’t know if he wants us thinking like, `Oh, we’ve never really won back-to-back, we’ve got to do it,’ and pressing that way. The bigger lesson is if we take it one game at a time we really can do well.”

Nor has it been discussed that the Raiders can be a .500 team at the midway point of the season for the first time since 2002.

“That’s the first I hard it this week,” Asomugha said. “I actually didn’t think about until you just said it. It wasn’t a think we stressed, either. It’s just another game we have to win before a divisional opponent the following week. We just have to put together two wins before we go into the bye.”

In addition to having a chance to be .500 at the halfway mark for first time since 02′, we also have scored more points than we allowed on the season at the halfway point since who knows when. Probably 02′ as well.

  • 504 Raider

Yeah JFB, but he sure is fast.

  • 504 Raider

Speaking of fast, this Mike Wallace kid for the Steelers, all I keep hearing is how fast this kid is. He was in the DHB draft and every time he gets the ball, the annoncers say “he just may be the fastest guy in the NFL.”

What was his 40 time? He was a 3rd rounder out of Ole Miss and he is actually from right here in New Orleans. In High School he went by the name Burnell Wallace and went to college at OLE Miss. But I never took him for a burner. He’s averaging 25 yds a catch.

Why was Al not on to this guy?

  • raiders22

find the rome link on FB. nnamdi and a few others

  • priesttj

504 if you know anything about his college career you wouldn’t even bring it up. He had the worse QB’s in the nation and a pedestrian offense no one on that team put up #’s. It was a horrible situation for any WR. So to even mention it is Mute it had no baering on his ability at all.

  • 504 Raider

Raiders22 that clip was funny as hell.

Best part was Nnamdi saying his piece of crap Maxima is for sale for $85,000 and Huff tries to wise crack him by asking 85,000 Euros?, thinking that is less than US dollars. Nnamdi being as smart as he is thinks and says Yeah Euros. Thinking like yeah I’ll take the euros if you gonna give me that instead of the US dollars.

Alright Raider Nation, it’s the best time of week, the day before game day!!!

Tomorrow, I have one BIG shout out and expectation…

The Left Side Tandem of Veldheer and Gallery are going to have a BIG day! Watch the blocking tomorrow, The Raiders O-line, and subsequently our running attack is going to have a big day against a smaller weaker Seattly D-line.

Watch for it, it’s going to be special, and the fact is Vely and Gallery are only going to get better together.

  • priesttj

But you don’t have any problem when Murphy drops them. lol he cost us a game this year. So did Ford but the only player anyone ever focuses on when it comes to drops is DHB.. hmmmm selective reasoning.

All WR’s drop balls and Murphy has dropped TWICE as many as DHB and still drops them. I think it is a bias against this kid becuase no one wanted him and Al Davis drafted him therefore he has a stigma attached to him. None of you will admit it but that’s all it is. You hat tyhe owner and you associate him with the owner………….period

  • 504 Raider

OK Priest, so what’s his deal now? We have better than crappy offense and we averaging 25 pts a game. Hardly pedestrian. Just admit DHB was a wasted pick. I’m just about to reluctantly say we got more out of Russell.

  • armond

vegas, dhb is asked to be a #1 wr before he has ever established himself. his ceiling can be high but we need a really talented qb to bring the best out of him right now. this is why i preferred nicks over him. the dubs are going to be something to reckon with. jhill need to get his azz on here since he challenged me about this. lee and biedrins will be one of the better pf-c duos in the league with their ability to pass out of the post as well as rebound. just wait until lee starts knocking down these open jumpers he has missed.

  • priesttj

Wallace was very underrated due to his #’s and they didn’t think he could run good routes and his hands were very questionable. He didn’t catch a ton of passes in college either but he’s playing with a much better QB……period

  • Roch R

And for everyone, here’s notice, get on the Mitchell Band Wagon….

MM34 is on a meteoric rise, over the last few weeks, all he’s done has been making plays!!

I wonder if the Bears have noticed?

  • Kirk

If we keep running misdirection on offense and blitz on defense, we will win.

  • Kirk

In 18 games DHB has caught 23 passes and scored 1 touchdown.

  • 504 Raider

Priest, we don’t hate the owner for picking McFadden. DHB just has no natural ability as a WR. Period! The dude logged major hours in the weight room at Maryland and is blessed with speed. That’s it. He is a work in progress. Last year they taught him how to block. This year how to run routes. Next year how to read defenses, the year after that, catching. So basically he’ll have a breakout season in his contract year.

  • priesttj

504 get a clue son that kid’s career hasn’t even started yet you teenyboppers just don’t get it. He’s in the 2nd year he has his entire career ahead of him. A month ago you were probably saying the same thing aboput Mitchell eventhough you’d never admit it. I’ll tell when I think it is a wasted pick it’s nowhere near that.

Until the watch the games and learn.

In 18 games DHB has caught 23 passes and scored 1 touchdown.

True but DMac didn’t accomplish squat for the first 2.5 years and then all of a sudden viola, a football player worth watching. Give the kid adequate time AND a QB that can get him the ball. Then make your judgments.

  • priesttj

yeah but a month ago everyone was treated him like a bum, what happened to all the disgust with Mitchell. Not one of will admit it. Shows what kind of integrity you have.

  • Roch R

What DHB needs to stop doing is thinking and pressing
    while he plays.

There are days that I want to go kick Cris Carter in the nuts, what that guy came out and said about a young kid that hadn’t even played a game in the NFL is criminal.

And you see the effects of Carter and all of the other so called experts “opinions” in DHB play every week.

The kid is putting the work in, he just has to relax and believe and trust his skills.

The kid just needs to go out and play, period.

  • priesttj

Armond I was extremely impressed with Lee last night I had courtside seats and heard him talking it up. He’s very competitive and a leader. Very skilled and tough this team could very well surprise a lotof people.

I read your posts, I respect what you say, I’m not always 100% on your takes, but your a solid part of the nation.

To you and the others in here, cheers!

    Go Raiders.

    OK Burger King aka Priest,
Have it your way. Remember you didn’t think Russell was a wasted pick until he got busted with the Purple. And that happened after he was cut from us.

….They have the #2 run D in the NFL.

    allow me to retort…

I don’t put a lot of stock in stats, quite frankly there for fantasy football geeks, (sorry if that offends anyone)

The fact is the Seattle D-line is undersized, and if you really want to pick on a draft pick that might be a bust, Curry isn’t exactly burning retinas with his star power…

But I insist, please watch the line play tomorrow, watch Veldheer man handle Curry and keep him back peddling.

Watch Gallery get deep into the second level and blast people…

If you have are time recognizing when that happens, you’ll know it happened when you see McFadden busting big runs down the sidelines.

(Disclaimer, I take no responsibility for what you might see Carlisle do, I just hope he, Satele and Walker are serviceable tomorrow.)

But the fact is the Seattle line is small, our ZBS and Power running should do very well tomorrow.

    Take it to the bank….

  • priesttj

What else do you need with that kind of talent son. lol Great talent great with ethic sounds great to me…..lol

DHB has better hands now than T.O. has ever had and T.O. is on his way to the HOF.
T.O. is #4 in the LEAGUE.

    Bey is #116.

    T.O. makes things happen.

    Bey makes nothing happen.

Bey is approaching the same bust status as your hero, Russell.

Please explain again how those awesome hands of Bey can’t catch a cold?

    Roch R….

I would love to see JV and RG knock the shehawks run D on their a$$.

  • armond

i want to see the st continue to improve cuz washington can hurt us bad in this game. i also want to see ford and miller bust out a td. i actually feel good about running on the seagulls. the passing game is what needs to come alive. this is the time for campbell and dhb to show what they are made of.

  • Lance’s Condoms vs. the Oregon Flying Fowl, is looking to be a good game…….so far….

  • armond

priest, lee is hella tough. the dubs needed to get someone who can mix it up even if he isnt a good defender. the energy around them is so positive cuz nellie is gone. hope currys’ injury isnt serious. the ball movement has been very good and i like that the rebounding has already improved.

Just got off the phone with Al. He called me to vent on these dudes comin in here to his blog, yes Als’ blog (him and jerry are friends, and jerry is doing this as a favor to Al) and talkin w basketball. He doesn’t like that one fking bit. Raider Nation is all over the world, and what are these folks gonna see when they come in here and hear w basketball. Go to the weak ass w blog ibabuzz.com/warriors or some damn thing like that. Raider Nation is big in Amsterdam, Kings Alley, Havana, just to name a few. Als’ pissed and he fking knows who you are.
Said he was so fking angry it was taking away his game day focus. You do not want to be on Als’ bad side. Think about it. What an insult to the Raiders to come in here and talk that trash. Now get over it.

  • J Hill

Had to take the 5 year old to a Halloween party last night mayne.

Wanted to hollar at you during the game, but I’m sure we can get after it tomorrow night, lol.

Kinda agree with B, Don’t think the Monta/Curry back court is going to get you into the playoffs. Defense wins in the West and with those 2 and no real paint players, IMO, can’t see the dubs making the top 8.

  • priesttj

Armond Brandon Wright also played very well last night he blocked several shots and changed some. They even have a tough young roughneck in that UDFA. I like this teams talent to upset some teams fora playoff spot if they stay healthy. I heard Curry say he wasn’t too bad, he may miss a few games but that’s it.

  • priesttj

Jhill don’t sleep broh they can score with the best and eventually Smart will get them to play D trust me.
