Rolando McClain Q&A
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, November 9th, 2010 at 12:59 pm in Oakland Raiders.
A transcript of Rolando McClain’s first interview with Bay Area media members since the start of the regular-season:
Q: How you feeling?
McClain: Good.
Q: Injury was not a big deal?
McClain: Everything’s fine. Just a little hip pointer, swelled up, I guess over the last two days it went down so I was able to practice.
Q: How would you assess your rookie season so far, nine games in? Are you where you thought you’d be?
McClain: I think I’m playing fine, but besides my individual play I think we’ve started to come along in our defense and that’s really all that matters to me. I have a role to help with this defense.
Q: What has been difference last three games, 6-for-42 on third down, what has happened?
McClain: I don’t know, there was one meeting, we all just said to each other we were going to play football, basically, and we told coach, and coach said he’s going to call the right things. It was a total team effort. Not just the plays, but it was something in the play calling and we were going to get in the defense that we were most comfortable with, and as we said, let the dogs unchained, just play football and just go out and have fun and that’s what we’ve been doing.
Q: Rookie wall, does it exist, where you’d be wrapping up in college . .
McClain: I don’t know about no rookie wall. The bye week’s here. I’m perfectly fine.
Q: After some early struggles, first couple of games, you mentioned early speed wasn’t much different than SEC, did you think maybe NFL was a little tougher, faster than you expected?
McClain: Not at all. Like I said earlier, you play against guys in practice all the time in practice that are just as fast as anybody you’re going to see. For me, it hasn’t been easy. But it hasn’t been hard either, because I have a great defensive line in front of me, taking care of me, allowing me to just run around, and coach is just letting us play.
Q: How often have you encountered guys on line getting to you at second level?
McClain: Sometimes it’s all the time. I watched film, last year you had to double Seymour as well as TK, and they forced the middle linebacker to make plays, and if you watch film now, you see you can’t double those guys because you have to account for me in the blocking scheme. My job is to try and make tackles, defeat the block first, but I don’t have a problem with that, especially with TK and Seymour making the plays they’ve been making, I don’t mind taking on the block every now and then.
Q: Focused on team aspect, but are there more plays to be made, interceptions, etc.?
McClain: I think everybody wants to make plays. That’s the league that we’re in. You just want to produce. But just from watching plays and watching film, coach is satisfied with what I’m doing. I don’t know. I take pride in my man not getting the ball thrown to him. When I’m guarding the back, because we’ve been playing a lot of Cover 5 lately, the ball hasn’t been going to my man so I haven’t had a lot of chances to make interceptions so I’m perfectly fine with that.
Q: Coaches are satisfied, but are you satisfied? And are you ever satisfied?
McClain: No, you’re never satisfied. If you’re satisfied, you become complacent and if you become complacent you might as well stop playing.
Q: Came in here conducting yourself as a veteran, do you feel like a rookie in any way at this point?
McClain: I don’t know, not really. I just feel like I’m one of the players, like I’m part of the team. That’s the hard thing coming in. You meet so many new guys, new coaches, new scheme, new everything coming in, and you have to adapt to it and fit in some kind of way. Now I feel like I fit in and everything is going smoothly, so I don’t feel like one of those 11 guys out on the field playing.
Q: You requested a sellout. You got it. What was it like?
McClain: It was crazy for the times I was out there. I only played 20 plays but I don’t think I’ve ever heard it that loud. I wanted the sellout because I knew we were about to do something special. You can feel it in the locker room, you can feel it in practice. We’re about to be pretty darned scary around here. I just wanted the fans’ support. It’s been like two years, and I don’t think I’ve ever not had a sellout, coming from Alabama . Me, as well as the rest of the guys on the team, feel like we’re about to have something special, so we wanted the fans to come out and support us.
Q: Confident you’ll pick up where you left off after the bye week?
McClain: No problem. The bye week, some guys could lose focus, but I don’t see that problem with this team. Everybody’s focused. We know the task at ahead. So, we’re just going to keep working, take some time off to recover and get our bodies healed and go back at it.
Q: Explain your reluctance to speak with the media?
McClain: I’m just not a media guy, to say the least. I’m just shy and I like to stay to myself. If it was my choice, I would never do media.
Q: Is it anything against us?
McClain: No, I have no problem with y’all. It’s just how I was raised. I just stay to myself and just real shy. I stay to myself a lot. It’s just the way I’ve always been. Talking to coach Cable after the first couple times I declined interviews, he asked why. I told him the reason, and he said ‘fine.’ You don’t have to do the local media. Just make sure if it’s one of those people from the network that are doing the game, then make sure you do that. I said, ‘All right.’ So, we kind of had an agreement with that. I promised if we had a sellout that I’d do media, so I’m here.
Q: So, when are we going to hear from you again?
McClain: Next sellout.

Lottery paid for by taxes? I don’t think so. The lottery is funded from the money collected selling tickets and then the proceeds are used by the States to fund things like education and the general funds of the participating States.
My $2 per week that goes to the lottery is like a self-imposed tax I guess.

Mistic,
You are correct we both dont think we will win this Pitt game.
The diff between you and I. I think JC sucks. I think he will look like a turd out there like Tenn and SF and even KC. It’s one thing to lose the game. It’s entirely another issue to lose the game because of his sorry a$$. So far this year, JC has missed 3 wide open deep balls. 2 of them costed us a game in SF. I dont even remember Bruce missing 3 deep balls on wide open receivers since he has been with the Raiders.
I stand by my comment Japuke is going to get his a$$ handed to him in Pitt. Then we will be done with this JC myth once and for all.

Dakota,
You’re right and I should clarify. You’re assessment of it being a self-imposed tax is actually very well said.
If you agree, like most in the party I’m sure you are affiliated with (which comprise the same @$$holes in line ahead of me at the liquor store scratching their lives away, so to speak) then you are essentially buying into additional funding for eduacation and gov’t administration, which for the most part, your party wants to cut in addition to taxes, education, and veterans benefits.
Without raising taxes on those who don’t play (or opt out, lol), you are paying for education and some poor schlep to get rich without ever actually working for it.
If all participants in Social Security (taxpayers who can’t opt out) contibute an amount that then goes out as a handout and your party wants to cut social security and other social welfare programs, aren’t you essentially going against party idiology?
++++++++++++
No. I am just buying a lottery ticket to strike it rich.

Unfortunately I live 45 minutes from Pittsburgh and have to watch their sorry asses every week. Here are the two must do’s to beat them. 1. Their Corners are garbage but Polamalu is unreal. You have to challenge the Corners but have to look Polamalu off. If you let him read your eyes, your done. 2. Get Rapistberger down quick. He is at his best scrambling and can complete big passes with players hanging on him. I hope Miller is healthy cause they blitz so much that they are vulnerable to passes in the middle of the field to TE’s and FB’s.

Had KC been competent in their passing game like Pitt, Bowe would have never dropped that first down to ice the game.
Had Ford not bailed out those “throws” JC made, we would have lost the game
And this week’s headline would have been Another JC disaster.
Japuke has benefited from riding the coat tails of other players around him. I have been saying show me that he can carry the team and I will give him his props. So far Zilch!!!! Nada!!!
If you show me one game including preseason, that Japuke has carried the team and was the reason for us winning then I will gladly acknowledge it. I doubt you can.

Being a Raiders fan for 41 years, I am sick and tire of hearing some of these racist overtone statements when it comes to Jason Campbell. We should just be happy that we are winning. I don’t care if Pee Wee Herman was the starting quarback as long as we are winning. I like Bruce Gradkowski, however, when you are winning games, you go with the hot hand. If Jason starts failing, I don’t have a problem replacing him with Bruce. CMON MAN!

Well, seeing as how they started the year playing a whole lot of zone with very little success and have since played their best defense in man, maybe not everything that they do is either at the behest of Davis or in defiance of him.
As naive as that sounds.

That says 5-2 Defense, not cover 5.

Wouldn’t count us out of the Pit game just yet. I’m not sure myself if we’re gonna win or not but I’m also not declaring we’re not.
3 things I think we have going for us is
1)We’re gonna be rested and have extra time to game plan for them.
2) They have to worry and get thru the game against NE
3) Goes into the above but they just had some major injuries along their offensive line. Their not deep there anyway (only carried 7 Olinemen into the game and 2 were injured) Our Dline has been playing real well and I think they could dominate against their oline.
Main problem that equals is we still have to tackle Big Ben.

I hope the Pats beat them up even more…

I started going to games in 64′ at Frank Youell Field. When the Coliseum opened in 66′ I was there until 77′
I was living in Japan when the moved in 80′
When they came back in 95′ I was there.
Now, I prefer to watch the game on TV, unless it’s blacked out, and I have to go.
Football is also a business, and the Raiders are in the business of selling tickets. It’s their responsibility not mine.
I go when I wish to go.

Well, seeing as how they started the year playing a whole lot of zone with very little success
————————–
The way I understand it, they were just playing Zone in the Red Zone.
With the same old 4 man rush Ideological Al Davis Defense.
————————–
A lot of the big runs we allowed in Houston were using a read-and-react and that was between the 20s.
I’d have to go back and look at the film, but I must say that the team actually looks best with the 4 man pressure man D (with the occasionally blitz of course).
The Saftey blitzes are certainly not a Davis wrinkle, so to some degree, I agree with you in that Davis is letting the coaches coach. Mike Ditka agrees with you too. He’s such an undercover Raider fan.

Oakladns D carried the day against the top ranked KC offense and CRUSHED THEM.
Domination folks…and without the help of the O…

Exla:
who is our 5th DL?
Scott, Wimbley, Groves?
——————————–
Not a hand on the ground but a Lb Rushing on the line.
———–
I gotta go back and look at what he’s talking about cause Scott is used on a 4 man line.
Wimbley has dropped back in coverage quite a bit, so it may be situational. They send either Groves or Wimbley, but I don’t recall Groves blitzing much.

No it isn’t. Cover 5 is the nickle zone package designed primarily to go against the spread. the 52 and 53 are basically the odd front defense. They are completely different defenses.

KK,
Im not being a jack ass, im just curious. Did your rivalry with Davis go back to 64, or did he get on your bad side later on?

I’m going to take a wild guess and say that KK got a bit sour after the Marcus Allen thing and very upset during the mid and late 90s when we weren’t winning?
Do I win?

I worshipped the ground Al Davis walked on. I’ve read Slick, and Black Knight. I carried a picture of him on my day-planner for years.
The Raiders have been in decline for over 20 years, the last 7…….ridiculous.
It’s not personal with me. Winning is more important to me, than placating an old man, Who’s clearly past it, and standing in the way of Raider Progress.
I don’t look at it as Al Davis the great. I look at as Al Davis the General Manager. Under that critera, he has been horrible for years a nd years.
Never in my wildest dreams could I have ever thought of the Raiders as a laughingstock. That’s what turned it for me. The Raiders are more important than one man’s ego.
November 9th, 2010 at 3:40 pm
So KoolKell, do you give him credit for the turnaround this year as his draftees are producing including Mike Mitchell who the coaches wanted to cut? Or are you also embittered to the point of no return.

My two favorites;
“They doubled Seymour and TK and forced the middle linebacker to make plays. They can’t do that now because they have to acccount for me in the blocking schemes.”
Translation: Kirk Morrison sucks, just like a good many of us in here said he did.
“We’re about to be pretty darned scary around here.”
Yeah, baby.
