A Raider legend likes what he sees
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, November 14th, 2010 at 3:47 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Picked up a few things to make some chicken fajitas tonight at the local Safeway, only to find Lester Hayes setting up a memorabilia table, wearing his familiar No. 37 and as gregarious as ever.
I introduced myself and a few minutes later left with my groceries plus a Hayes dissertation on what a terrific job Tom Cable is doing as head coach.
Hayes flashed four fingers and told me the Raiders were playing four quarters, flashed his two Super Bowl rings to show me what that could mean.
Lester was stunned to hear Denver was pummeling Kansas City 35-10 at halftime.
“Denver?,” he shrieked.
Then Hayes proceeded to get into a defensive stance and demonstrate to me how Chiefs cornerbacks were too up right and unable to turn and run quick enough, as opposed to Raiders corners, who had been schooled properly.
Hayes will be selling and signing various memorabilia into the evening at the Safeway on Dublin Blvd., in Dublin, CA, into the evening, with a portion going to a breast cancer fund.

It is our destiny to beat Pittsburgh. Because of Gradkowski’s success last year Campbell will be on a short leash. Campbell knows this and will be uptight and ready to second guess himself.
=====================================================
So Campbell is going to struggle in the 1st half..and then the Great Gradkowski will come in with Angels from heaven singing and rescue victory from the jaws of defeat?
You Gradkowski guys go over the top in your assessments!
November 14th, 2010 at 3:54 pm
Anyone who wishes concussions or other injuries on players has obviously never played a competitive sport in their life. They also have no life to speak of today.
November 14th, 2010 at 3:57 pm
Maybe you should talk to some NFL players before you make that statement, especially George Atkinson. You will find out how wrong you are.

SnB,
the last time Grad bailed out JC you didnt seem to have any problem jumping on his wagon. Why biatching now?
November 14th, 2010 at 3:57 pm
That idiot on Fox Sports online will still have the Chiefs ranked higher in the power rankings. Not that that stuff matters but this guy just annoys me cuz he’s either a total football idiot, or is just delibrately trying to annoy people.

November 14th, 2010 at 4:00 pm
Aig,
I have never seen so much pessimism towards the Raiders heading into a game in my life. I mean just unbelievable.
The QB is certain to fail and the backup is the 2nd coming of Peyton Manning.
As you pointed out, I was cheering for Gradkowski and the Raiders big time.
I could care less about my “favorite” players. I just want the team to win! By hook or by crook…
JUST WIN BABY!
I will be at the Pittsburgh game next week. So I hope and pray that JC and the offense put points on the board and the Defense dominates.
If Gradkowski has to come in like many of you are so CERTAIN will happen, I will still be cheering!
November 14th, 2010 at 4:01 pm
The thing that wories me the most about this game is not the opponent, although Pittsburgh is obviously formidable.
The Steelers are one of the teams in the NFL that always get the critical calls, and as we all know the Raiders are in the opposite category. If it’s a fair fight we can win; if we have to overcome both the opponent and the officials it’ll be a tough day.

SnB,
I have never said Grad is going to win in Pitt this year. But I find it hilarious that you continually mock anything related to Grad when it was you that ceremoniously dumped JC and jumped on Grad’s tail after STL. It’s hypocritcal to make fun of others when you were just guilty of doing jsut that.
November 14th, 2010 at 4:09 pm
SnB, Im not a Gradkowski guy. I AM A RAIDER FAN. I don’t give f**K who leads us to victory. If they have on the silver and black i love em period. I think the back and forth about the two quarterbacks is useless. I trust CABLE and/or Al DAVIS to do the right thing, to make the right call. As far as the QB’s are concerned Neither is great and either will have to do. Grad is too small and can’t handle the physical pressure and Campbell is too slow and indecisive. But, both have proven that they can win. JUST WIN BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

November 14th, 2010 at 4:20 pm
Here’s my prediction for the remainder of the season. I know, not the most popular opinion… I called 5-4 at the bye since week 3 or 4, not that I can see into the future or anything like that, I just go with my gut feeling. so here it is…
11 11/21 @ Pit 10:00 AM PT L
12 11/28 vs. Mia 1:05 PM PT W
13 12/5 @ SD 1:05 PM PT L
14 12/12 @ Jac 10:00 AM PT L
15 12/19 vs. Den 1:15 PM PT W
16 12/26 vs. Ind 1:05 PM PT L
17 1/2 @ KC 10:00 AM PT W
Finish 8-8. and with this record, it is still very possible we win the division. Now, I could see an upset maybe vs Pitts, and a W possibly in Jax, but Indy will be playing for a playoff spot, and SD will be hoping to have a hope. Maybe we could sweep SD too, but I think it will be a lot tougher to win in SD.
So a possible 9-7 or if we play really good 10-6, in which case I think we win the division for sure.
GO RAIDERS!

November 14th, 2010 at 4:47 pm
Actually anyone who claims DHB isn’t doubled is the idiot. He may not catch as many passes as everyone wants-its kind of difficult to do when the ball isn’t thrown your way-but he is doubled almost every play.If you watched last week on Fords long completions you would see, unless you didn’t want to,that the safety cheated to DHBs side every time. You guys biotch about AIG hating on your boy Campbell, but you constantly do they same with DHB.

Niners win in OT. Troy Smith was outstanding. They actually had 3 TD’s called back due to penalty. Troy Smith will be SF’s new franchise QB. I have always hoped we would have picked him up. Our loss.
November 14th, 2010 at 4:48 pm
The Ravens are incredibly good at finding talent. The only reason Flacco ended up starting his rookie year was because Troy Smith injured himself late in the pre-season.

Nedney with another game winner. Remember when we had Nedney and drafted Janikowski instead of Shaun Alexander? Good times
November 14th, 2010 at 4:51 pm
Newsome is a heck of GM. Too bad Al Davis didnt bring in Troy Smith here. I would have preferred Troy over Boller back then. Boller is only here because Al Davis loves to collect former first rounders.
November 14th, 2010 at 4:52 pm
I truly hope DHB works out for the raiders. But when someone gets that kind of dollar at that pick, fickle fans want results, myself included. But it is Als business. You just dont see guys sitting a year or two anymore while they grow and develope. Thrust them into the fire. Doesn’t always work. Just praying it doesn’t hinder the rest of the team. But if he does draw the doble cover, then maybe it’ll work. Look for Ford to get the double cover now.

November 14th, 2010 at 5:01 pm
I don’t know why Raiders don’t heave it to DHB on a long “go” route. How come we never see that? We know the guy can out run everybody.
I thought we might see more of that with DHB.
November 14th, 2010 at 5:01 pm
Guys, QUIT saying DHB isn’t targeted enough. He’s 30th among WRs in the entire NFL in targets, ahead of guys like:
Randy Moss
Hines Ward
DeSean Jackson
and Roy Williams
He gets his chances. He does very little with them. It’s ok. He gets one more year to prove himself.

Hill, because until now, DHB was our 2nd best, and 2nd healthiest, WR. Now, he isn’t. It will be interesting to see what happens.
Ideally, I think Cable wants Chaz and Murphy out wide, with Ford in the slot. DHB, if he improves, will challenge Murphy out as the #2.
November 14th, 2010 at 5:13 pm
Nobody is scheming for DHB. He scares no one. Plenty of guys in the league can run, but is not a threat to make a play on the ball in the air or in traffic. He the worst pass catcher in the receiving corps and is stealing Al’s money. His production is by the worst of any NFL receiver with as many starts and balls targeted to him..Consistency…he sux.
November 14th, 2010 at 5:14 pm
Djohnny-the reason we don’t see it more often is QB are taught to look for the single coverage and target that rec.Like it or not, that is why he doesn’t get more passes thrown his way.
November 14th, 2010 at 5:17 pm
Almost every good to decent WR in the NFL is double-teamed, either in man or by zones shifting in their direction. The point is those WRs still produce.
As for who the Chiefs safety was covering on the Ford TD, according to NFL.com, it was…
Brandon Myers
Chiefs respect Raiders underneath routes to tight ends more than DHB.

it actually has video footage and breaks it down, not bad.

November 14th, 2010 at 5:21 pm
We have one decoy on our offense. Ford.
November 14th, 2010 at 5:21 pm
FYI DHD panty sniffers…Vs. Chefs 5 targets zero catches
2009 DHB 40 Targets…9 Catches…If continues to have several balls thrown to him per game we will fade from the AFC West race. He will keep us from making first downs and sustaining game winning drives. He should get minimal snaps and return kick offs.

November 14th, 2010 at 5:24 pm
That video link shows the KC corner doing what I’ve seen most corners do to DHB – give him a cushion, backpedal at the snap, and nothing happens.
The stats and the video show that DHB isn’t being double-teamed that much. He’s getting lots of targets, but doing little with them.
DHB’s “long” TD against Seattle was about a 12-yard curl where the safety went for the INT, missed, and DHB had no one between him and the end zone.

Ha, Lester Hayes talking about the Chiefs corners being “too upright.”
Lester, the Chiefs corners were beat for ONE long pass. They blanked our WRs for the most part that Sunday.
Their safeties were beat on the flea flicker, probably not because they weren’t hunched over enough.
For what it’s worth, Davis’ loyalty to his ex-players, going as far as making them coaches when they had no previous experience, while admirable, was part of the reason we were in a funk for the last few decades.
Was it CJ or Routt that was making fun of how Willie Shaw “coached” them to mug the WRs the way he did back in the day?
November 14th, 2010 at 5:30 pm
Someone needs to teach DHB how to be a #1 wide receiver. Maybe the Raiders will pick up Kevin Curtis once he comes back from sitting the year out after a bout with testicular cancer.
I’d like to see Al Davis go after Vincent Jackson, but Jackson is going to cost a lot and the Raiders have key signings to make first. Roy Williams would be a solid option if he gets cut by the Cowboys.
DHB needs to get the kind of confidence that a #1 receivers should have. He should WANT the ball to come to him in key situations. He needs to show he can make catches that other guys on this team can’t.
I’m hoping his career develops like Dwayne Bowe’s, and not like Troy Williamson’s. The jury is out right now. But the kid needs some help, and more importantly, the team needs him to help if they intend on making it to the playoffs.

Bottom line on DHB is he has to be doing something out there to still be starting. Something better than JLH, J Ford, Miller, and Murphy.
I, for one, am not touting his receiving skills at all. A work in progress to say the least. He needs to get better.
But if you are really telling me you don’t notice how open certain areas of the field are, then hey that’s your opinion.
A WR who has been killing KC in the 2nd half was wide open over the top with Niether S in the picture. Eric Berry is the FS with deep responsibilities Alex, but I’m sure you knew that.
Of course DHB isn’t doubled every play, but to say coverages are not rolled his way EVER is ridiculous.
November 14th, 2010 at 5:39 pm
Yikes, I’m very worried about Casey Hampton vs. Raiders Center.
Belichick is awesome. Passes 73% of the time vs Steelers. I can only hope we don’t try and outsmart ourselves and try to “establish the run” or “be physical” or any other non-sense that will lead to 3 and outs.
3 and 4-wide all day. Shotgun 5-wide QB draws on goaline for all I care
November 14th, 2010 at 5:39 pm
Look,I just don’t adhere to the fact he is a bust.I don’t hate him because he was drafted so high.He didn’t draft himself. I watched Cliff Branch who couldn’t catch a cold when he was drafted become someone who should be in the HOF.I don’t believe in instant gratification-some guys take longer to fulfill their capabilities and I believe DHB fits that category. Also, since i don’t hate him like many of you,I will give him credit for things he has done, while you guys seem to ignore them.A guy with his size and speed could benefit this team so much if he pans out,so I’m willing to let him learn, not hate on him,and hope he fulfills his potential. If you care to ridicule someone for hoping a player with his physical traits becomes a success,go for it,it shows how little you are.

November 14th, 2010 at 5:44 pm
The only way to beat Pitt D is still passing. Brady threw a perfect pass. Wow. 14 yds is the longest run they gave all year. A short and quick passing game is the way to go vs them. I hope Al doesnt force a ton of go routes.
November 14th, 2010 at 5:45 pm
Our WRs are fine.
This is an old school team led by the defense and running game.
DMac and Miller should continue to be our best weapons.
Murphy, DHB, Ford, and JLH are fine as a group.
I’m already WAY past expecting DHB to be a “#1″ WR.
November 14th, 2010 at 5:46 pm
Easy question:
who’s the last super-fast wide receiver that was drafted and did really well in the NFL? I think Moss is the last one I can picture, and he had great hands in college.
Fitzgerald, Boldin, Roddy White, Reggie Wayne, Andre Johnson, Colston, Greg Jennings, Vincent Jackson…
none of those guys are burners. They’re all physical, strong receivers. Chaz is the only guy on our team that MIGHT turn into a legit #1.
November 14th, 2010 at 5:46 pm
That just what the all the analyst on NFLN said today on how to beat the Steelers defense: You have to run multiple WR sets and spread them out, keep the safeties deep out of the box. This keeps them away from the exotic blitzes and schemes ran out of the nickel and dime.
Pay attention to the stat line NBC put up showing how Belicheck throws on the Steelers 75% of the time vs fairly evenly for the rest of the league.
November 14th, 2010 at 5:48 pm
Again, the Chiefs safeties decided to jump the tight end route, and left DHB in single coverage that OT play.
Of course safeties SOMETIMES roll over to DHB’s side, but no more than any other starting receiver. He’s not doing any more “clearing out” than any other #1. So what is he doing, exactly?
November 14th, 2010 at 5:49 pm
Oline-they didn’t blanket our WRs.Watch the game again. Our WRs were constantly open.DHB was wide open at least 3 times, the passes thrown his way were UNCATCHABLE but I guess it is his fault he didn’t haul them in.Of course those that hate him just say he had the passes directed towards him without mentioning they were uncatchable passes.
November 14th, 2010 at 5:50 pm
No, you shouldn’t be afraid of running deep routes vs the Steelers. Heck, its encouraged. Doing so will force their safties to play deep opening up the underneath/middle of the field. The Steelers cannot play our speed.
November 14th, 2010 at 5:50 pm
Saying our WRs are “good enough” is the way that mediocre teams stay mediocre. You always have to keep improving.
The Colts WRs were good enough in the Marvin Harrison days, and then they went and got Reggie Wayne. Hello Super Bowls.
Ditto the Patriots passing game, and then getting Randy Moss.
When teams have taken away our short passing game, or blitzed, we’ve struggled. We need a downfield threat that can go up and make big catches. We can’t count on 5′8″ Ford to have games like this consistently.
November 14th, 2010 at 5:51 pm
We have NOBODY to throw a fade route or go-route to.
That’s weird. Hope we address that in the off-season or that Chaz becomes that guy.
November 14th, 2010 at 5:51 pm
There were two uncatchable passes thrown DHB’s way.
One would have been a hard catch, but one that he could have made. He fully extended his body, but it bounced off his hands.
Two were drops, one of which was a drop in the end zone.
November 14th, 2010 at 5:52 pm
Terrapin,
while JC is holding the ball 4 seconds to let those deep routes develop, how many sacks will the Steelers blitzes net them?

November 14th, 2010 at 5:55 pm
This keeps them away from the exotic blitzes and schemes ran out of the nickel and dime.
—————————————————–
Spreading them out is what they said NOT to do. If you spread them out, you get the nickel and dime packages.
They said to run the 2 TE set to keep the base defense on the field and them spread those guys out. A TE on either side of the LOS make Hairamalu actually play S.
We should be able to get a lot done with Miller, Reece, and Meyers on the field at the same time.
CMON HUE !!!!!!!
November 14th, 2010 at 5:56 pm
NFL has the Raiders under the stinking squaws in the standings. We should be on top by virtue of our 3-0 division record.
The WWF,,, nfl is unhappy that their little darlings Todd, Romeo, Jabbaweiss and the fat red army are no longer any good.
November 14th, 2010 at 5:57 pm
I hope Miller is fine. My concern is that he might have a hairline fracture in his arch. The Raiders have been very secretive about his injury. It could be a smokescreen, or it could be another Chaz Schilens kind of situation.

I ignored your other post because they were either half-truths or hold very little merit. But I guess I’ll respond to this since its directed at me.
Answer: That’s why you run multiple WR sets – 1 to 2 run deep routes 2 to 3 run underneath stuff. You spread them out and proctect your line for the blitzes (and also have a quick play available if the blitz comes). The Patriots do not have the speed we do but they are trying to d just that the best they can with their wides.
November 14th, 2010 at 5:57 pm
I’d say Murphy is our best go route guy. Not sure how he’d compare to the rest of the league but best on our team by far right now.

November 14th, 2010 at 5:59 pm
YA-he dropped the 1st pass thrown his way.The pass in the end zone may have been catchable but it would have been considered a great catch-surely not a should have been completed ball. You seem to forget the wide open crossing pattern that went at least 5 yards over his head and wide near the end of the game, and that is my point-those of you who don’t like him overlook those and then say how he was targeted.
November 14th, 2010 at 6:00 pm
Hmm JHill, you could be correct. Still the same premise though – i.e. having multiple wides or in your case TEs on the field (who presumebly would run the underneath).
November 14th, 2010 at 6:00 pm
We should absolutely be in 1st in division. We’re unbeaten in div play AND have a win over the Fat Red A holes.

No I didn’t. I deliberately mention those two uncatchable throws. Read the post.
For the one in the end zone, his feet were planted inbounds and the ball his him in the arms. Even if it would have been a great catch, isn’t that what a #1 draft pick is supposed to do? Make great catches?
November 14th, 2010 at 6:02 pm
Alex, are you telling me Berry and #47 were covering the TE underneath?
You don’t notice #47 coming in late from the other side of the field?

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
SOLD! Good point. I’m a DHB fan. I’m easy. You’re right. Cable has him out there for a reason. Cable isn’t afraid to bench anyone, so he knows something we don’t. We might feel he’s miles away, but the coaches see him at the corner. He seems like an honest guy. No more DHB jokes from me.
November 14th, 2010 at 6:03 pm
I say we use Ford on a go route on one down, take him out and use DHB on the next down and he runs a go route. Keep rotating those guys on consecutive downs doing the same thing. That CB will be so tired by the end of the 1st quarter that you should be able to get 2 or 3 scores on that side after that.

I didn’t say he should never drop the ball. But he should at least have as many catches as drops. That hasn’t been the case in his career thus far.
I think his draft status certainly counts, because that’s why he’s on the field in spite of sub-par production. If they’re going to give treat him like a guy who has earned a starting job, he should play like one.

I don’t think he’s useless. But I think he needs to make clutch plays if he wants to help his team. That’s why he’s here – to make plays. Not to run clearout routes, even if he is effective at doing that.

Actually I think Chaz combines more skill with Talent at the WR psoition than anyone on the team. Murphy just drops too many passes for me. Chaz has a huge body great hands and runs in the low 4.3’s at 6′5″ that’s hard to beat. Once DHB’s confidence, hands and route running exceed those of Chaz he will be a dominant rec. he and Chaz go about 225 each but DHB is stocky while Chaz is long. DHB just needs to continue to improve and he’ll get there it may not be when YOU want him to but as long as he gets the in that 3-4 year span we’re in good. WR’s need to be able to read defenses and adjust their routes especially in 2minute drills. It appears to me watching him tha he does all the technigue things well he just needs to get the final part down. Which is track the ball and make plays.
People seem to hate whoever they perceave to be an Al Davis player. Which is beyond stupid IMO because they are all his players. That’s why I think most fans hate JC not just prefer Grads over him they hate him.
I say that because I watched this entire blog turn on Mike Mitchell for what they perceaved was an Al Davis move to keep him on the roster. And the fell in love with his counterpart an UDFA . It was the single dumbest thing I had ever seen, you went from supporting Mitch to hating him in 2 hours due t a silly story without even waiting for the facts.
It’s a phenomenon that can only be explained this way, most of believe whatever the media says hands down you don’t even care if it’s not true. Their saying it is enough for you.
It’s like KK who he says he’s been waiting until we win again and He’ll see things differently and says we dn’t care about winning. When in truth HE DOESN’T all he cares about is what is Mr Davis doing now?
It wuld reallly be nice if we just got back to one thing being Raiders fans hoping we win the next game instead of all the sidebar crap. Favorites and guy’s you hate………..peace!
November 14th, 2010 at 6:21 pm
People keep forgetting that DHB is our best blocking WR. That is also why he’s always on the field. He draws deep coverage and he blocks well. If only he could catch everything. 2 out of 3 ain’t bad I guess.
November 14th, 2010 at 6:22 pm
DHB isn’t the one drawing the defenses and safeties around, it is our running game.
Let’s sit around and think about this for a second. Which would cause a defense and their secondaries to overcompensate for them more. Darrius Heyward-Bey or a top 3 rushing offense?
“Decoy Heyward-Bey”

Someone should give Chaz some bionic legs. Kid could be an incredible wide receiver in this league if he would just stay healthy. Huge, fast, and great hands. Natural route runner. Everything a big-time #1 wide receiver should be, except for durable.
November 14th, 2010 at 6:25 pm

November 14th, 2010 at 6:27 pm
Blocking is one thing DHB has definitely been doing well. He’s a physically imposing guy and has made some key plays in the running game.
I still think the dude has the potential to be very good, it’s just a shame that right now the Raiders are first in their division and the only thing they seem to be missing is a consistent threat at wide receiver.
November 14th, 2010 at 6:28 pm
Priestbj,
Dominant receiver? Are you serious. He has to prove to be a marginal NFL receiver. Roll tape on MM. He is not good. One deflected pass does not make him probowl
material. MM is the one who whiffed and allowed the cards to score on the KO return. I would love to have those points back.
November 14th, 2010 at 6:31 pm
Trevor scott is also posting probowl numbers…1/2 sack in 9 games..But Al’s has a mancrush on him in the worst way.
November 14th, 2010 at 6:32 pm
Mitchell also made a couple key plays in San Diego to help contain Gates. Made some big plays in the running game versus Seattle. He also helped shut down Moeaki in the second half of the KC game.
Literally everyone who has watched the last several games thinks Mitchell has played well. Commentators, journalists, experts, most people on this blog… so what makes you so special, 89052? What great knowledge can you bestow on us?

Mind you they’re playing the New England Patriots tonight, another good team. New England is good on both sides of the ball, therefore it’s natural that Pittsburgh is going to have difficulty on both sides of the ball. Bottom line is, if the Steelers lose tonight, they’re more likely to win their next game. Good teams usually come together after losses. It doesn’t bode well for their next week’s opponent, which happens to be the Raiders.

Pats dont have much of a deep threat from what I can see. They are playing a lot of small ball stuff. Its effective but not as effective if they could press deeper, which would open up the offense a lot more. The Steelers have adjusted and are now playing tighter.
I watched the youtube footage of Gannon vs the Steelers and it was the same small ball stuff because we didn’t really have a deep threat like we do today. Hence, the low scores no the board despite all the passing.
The Raiders offense today is full of speed which should fair better against the Steelers defense vs the Patriots today and the Gannon Raiders. Believe it or not, the Raiders should be a very tough matchup for the Steelers.
But the WRs have to catch the ball and the QB has to throw a catchable ball – that goes without saying.
November 14th, 2010 at 7:04 pm
Having watched Pittsburgh on Monday and tonight, I am yet to see anything that tells me they are significantly better than the Raiders. They won last week because the Bengals were awful, and they havent done much today against the Pats, who are not the team everyone seems to think they are.

Believe me, I know all about the law of averages. It’s a nice theory and all, but the idea that it’s an actual law is a fallacy.
In the NFL particularly, anything can happen on any given week. Teams have proven that time and time again.
If the Steelers beat the Raiders, it will be because they played well.
There are simply far too many factors at play to say “Oh, they won this week because they lost last week!” That would be a gross oversimplification.
November 14th, 2010 at 7:07 pm
I agree, Steelers are overrated. We can take them if the defense holds up and the offense plays mistake free football.
November 14th, 2010 at 7:09 pm
Young American, it’s not a theory. It’s simple math. Believing the Raiders will just dominate the Steelers because they’re the mighty Raiders and the Steelers are girly men is a “theory”. The laws of averages are scientific fact.
November 14th, 2010 at 7:11 pm
The Steelers might be overrated, but they’re still a good team. They can win in a lot of different ways.
It’s not impossible for the Raiders to win, but they need to bring their A-game to do so.

MR,
What has Pittsburgh done that is so impressive? They are a good team, better than us, I wont deny that. But they arent a dominating team. They will win every time if you do what the Bengals did, and spot them 10 easy points. But the Pats have avoided turnovers, played field position, and Ben is 7/20. And the Pats D is ranked around 30th in the NFL, the Raiders are 7th. The Pats got rolled by the Browns, who arent as bad as their record, but still not a good team. What has Pitt done to impress you? We beat them last year with a significantly worse team, what has Pitt done to upgrade their roster? Add Polamalu, take away the startings tackle and aaron smith, minus santonio holmes, this is not the powerhouse people think it is. Neither are the Pats. 2 best teams in the AFC are Ravens and Jets IMO.
November 14th, 2010 at 7:18 pm
RMR, get a smart person to continue this conversation for you.
The law of averages is only anywhere close to true when there is a large sample size, which does not exist in the NFL. This is why it’s also known as the Gambler’s Fallacy.
November 14th, 2010 at 7:18 pm
did u really just compare math and the scientific law of averages to football….?
did your law of averages show Oakland beating Denver 59-14, or denver beating KC 49-29…
im not saying the raiders are gonna win, but to get scientific about is is rofl funny

100percent, I’m glad you’re not the Raiders head coach. If I’m Tom Cable and I see the Steelers lose tonight, I know they’re coming out jacked up against us. I’m preparing my team twice as hard as what I’d previously planned.
—
Yes. Elite teams generally lose two in a row unless their starting QB is hurt or if they play two other elite teams in a row and happen to come up short.
Back in the day (70’s and early 80’s) the Raiders hardly ever lost two in a row; in fact it was a big deal if they did.
That being said, I still don’t know what we have here with these Raiders. My hope is they are just so dam* good that if they play their game they can beat anybody. The key is believing they are that kind of team.
November 14th, 2010 at 7:22 pm
If the Raiders can win three in a row, the Steelers can lose two in a row.
November 14th, 2010 at 7:23 pm
We will beat the Steelers if we start Ford and Grads.
We will probably beat them if we don’t.
Their new left offense tackle scks.
Roths is going to get killed.
November 14th, 2010 at 7:25 pm
See Brady just get flatted on that mix up?
November 14th, 2010 at 7:26 pm
1 thing the Steelers do: Stop the run. Going into this game, they were allowing fewer YPC than the 2000 Ravens. 17-3 Pats
November 14th, 2010 at 7:27 pm
Pitt looks weak right now. They get no pressure, and there zone coverage is getting dissected. Big Ben is barely escaping, our D line won’t allow that. They better be ready for 60 minutes of hard in your face football next Sunday.
November 14th, 2010 at 7:28 pm
The Raiders will run all over the Steelers. McFadden 110 yrds, Bush 65 yrds, Campbell 40 yrds. You heard it here first. Raiders 27, Steelers 16
November 14th, 2010 at 7:31 pm
There is no reason the Raiders can’t beat the Steelers. It’s all going to come down to if the Raiders play like the Raiders.
November 14th, 2010 at 7:33 pm
Oakland D-line > NE d-line
NE d-line > Pitt o-line
Hows that for math?
November 14th, 2010 at 7:33 pm
I hope the coaches are more realistic than you guys. If Cable takes the same approach to next week that you guys are, we’re in serious trouble. Steelers are playing arguably the best team in football right now. Next week, they’ll be playing a Raider team that’s somewhere in the middle tier. Improved, yet obviously beatable in more way than one. Again, I hope Cable approaches this game more seriously than a lot of the fans are.
November 14th, 2010 at 7:39 pm
MR, NE got worked last week by Cleveland. Do you really think they are the best team in football? Look at what they have done since they have traded Moss before you try to make that arguement.
November 14th, 2010 at 7:54 pm
Pittsburgh is looking like a team that might lose 2 in a row at home
November 14th, 2010 at 7:56 pm
Raiders D is far superior than NE…
November 14th, 2010 at 7:58 pm
Pittsburgh will lose at home tonight and next week. They ain’t that good. I highly doubt the Raiders are worried about them. If anything, they are licking their chops.
November 14th, 2010 at 8:01 pm
But NE QB is far superior to our QB.As I watch other teams QBs hit their WRs in stride I wish our QB could do that once in a while(I’m talking about passes longer than 10 yards).
November 14th, 2010 at 8:01 pm
Hopefully the Raiders get Kamerion Wimbley involved so he can turn the replacement LT into a turnstile.
November 14th, 2010 at 8:02 pm
Can’t expect Steelers to play this bad next week. Raiders won’t underestimate them. Still, they look very beatable.
November 14th, 2010 at 8:05 pm
4th straight game the Steelers have allowed 20+ points.
November 14th, 2010 at 8:10 pm
That was a good drive by Big Ben!
November 14th, 2010 at 8:11 pm
The Steelers are probably going to play very aggressively next week, so with any luck the Raiders will exploit it. Protecting Campbell is going to be key. The Raiders are going to have to contain Rothelisburger and Mendenhall, as well. If Big Ben has all the time in the world to make plays it’s going to be a long day. And if the Raider D can’t turn their offense one-dimensional like they did to the Chiefs, the Steelers will be hard to stop.
The Steelers have not looked good at containing the RB in the passing game. McFadden has a chance to shine there.
November 14th, 2010 at 8:13 pm
100% that’s what I’ve been saying about the Steelers everyone is trembling in their bots because the mighty Steelers are next in line. The Steelers haven’t been a dominant team in 2 years. Yeds they are great vs the run so what so was KC and Seattle. The ddifference is teh Steelers got a lot of people fooled. That’s fans and media. I think SD is a better team. The QB is better and the WR’s and TE’s are better and the running game is better. SD’s defense is every bit as good as the Steelers in totality.
If you ask me who would I rather play I’d say the Steelers. I do recognize they are very good team but not a domiant team. As long as LeBeau is there they will be great vs the run. It’s the reason he plays that defense to commit players abeit great players to the run. But if you spread them out like NE is doing and hit them with speed they are very vulnerable. It forces them to commit more to coverage than they are used to and they just aren’t very good at it. You do that all game long and they’ll get tired sloppy tackling and wide open rec’rs.
Thye don’t have a single guy that we can’t single cover and render it at least even. Then we can get after Big fat Ben and their running game. Unless we turn it over or get very sloppy we can beat them. And we don’t neeed Tom Brady to do it. JC can get it done. Trust me.
November 14th, 2010 at 8:18 pm
J you are starting to upset Jizzelle. Knock it off ASAP!
November 14th, 2010 at 8:18 pm
There is so much parity in the NFL that we have an excellent chance to win. The defensive and offensive lines are the biggest keys aling with protecting the football. Seymour is the catalyst that sparks the entire dline. Veldeer has restored my faitth in the online and he is a huge upgrade over unsuper Mario. If we protect the ball and compete along the oline and dline then we will have an excellent chance.
November 14th, 2010 at 8:19 pm

November 14th, 2010 at 8:21 pm
Sorry, Drex. I just think Brady’s an amazing quarterback. His skills are mesmerizing. Persuasive, even.
November 14th, 2010 at 8:21 pm
It will all come down to Raider game planning and execution. That’s pretty 101 sh1t, ain’t it? I got total confidence in Cable, Hue and Marshall. That’s their job. It’s what they do. There all over at Cables house watching the game, taking notes, eating snacks, coming up with this weeks practice plan. Good stuff. Steelers won’t know what hit them. They will be licking their wounds this week and we’ll hit them again next week. Our defense is good. So is ST’s, Bush, Reece and Mac.
November 14th, 2010 at 8:21 pm
If we are forced to throw and put in unmanageable third downs then our chances are diminished. Also we have to put the steelers in third and long and not allow then to get solid rush gains on 1st and 2nd down. The trenches must be won for us to win at Pitt.
November 14th, 2010 at 8:22 pm

November 14th, 2010 at 8:25 pm
Guy’s please we just played KC with Romeo Crennel as the DC he employs some of the same principles. But has much better cover guy’s. The Steelers corners are slow, they will be backpedalling way before the snap of the ball because they have to squeese that zone. They mave to make those windows as small as possible so JC cannot stick that ball in there. That’s going to give us a 10 yard cushion for 1st downs. ZM has to play in this game or else Myers has to be much better in the passing game.
Once they get so overly concerned with the pass, DMC and Bush should have plenty of room to roam. Even Troy wil be so far off the ball we’ll at least get 5 yards on a run.
Yeah Ben will make some plays as well he’s not a top teir QB for nothing he will get some plays in their passing game. But I can’t see him doing this defense any worse thanhe is doing NE and our defense makes NE’s look weak.
November 14th, 2010 at 8:25 pm
Chiefs and Chargers will probably win next week. So, the Raiders better beat Pittsburgh.

Man if you had seen the Browns dismantle the Pat’s defense and then watch the Steelers struggle against it, it tells you everything you need to know. Bill is good but his players stink in coverage there are 4 rookies out there.

Steelers are 6-3. They’re one of the better teams in the NFL, still. They just lost to the Patriots, for crying out loud. A game they were probably predicted to lose. Good teams rarely lose 2 straight. That’s a fact. That doesn’t bode well for us.

November 14th, 2010 at 8:59 pm

November 14th, 2010 at 9:00 pm
You are right, MR. Good teams lose 2 in a row less often than bad teams do. But that does not automatically mean this team will rally and play well. Hell, last year around this time Pittsburgh had a 4 game losing streak. It is also a fact that we beat Pitt at home AFTER they had lost their previous game. So we may have one fact going agaisnt us, but there are plenty that are going our way. We are a 30 yard fg from being 6-3, and having the same record as the Steelers. To this point, that is the lone difference between the Steelers and the Raiders. So have some faith. This is a 50/50 game for us, I dont think anyone here is expecting a repeat of the Denver game.
