Raiders vote to decertify
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, November 19th, 2010 at 12:45 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders joined an expanding group of NFL teams which has voted to decertify the union in order to prevent a lockout in the event a collective bargaining agreement is not reached with management.
NFL Player’s Association executive director DeMaurice Smith met with the Raiders Thursday, a day after conducting a vote with the 49ers, who also voted to decertify. The number of teams which have voted for decertification is reportedly more than 20, with no team voting against it.
Zach Miller was voted the team’s new player representative, replacing Tony Stewart, who was waived in training camp. Miller had been serving as an alternate along with Ricky Brown since Stewart left the team. Brown and Bruce Gradkowski are the current alternates.
Decertification is a tactic which will enable the union to sue the league in the event of a lockout. Antitrust laws don’t allow unions to sue employers during CBA negotiations.
“We don’t want to end up there,” Miller said of decertification. “We would rather have our CBA done before then. It’s our answer if the owners prove to lock us out, that’s our answer for them if they want to take that step, but we want to keep working on the CBA and get something done before it comes to that.”
Running back Rock Cartwright vented some of his thoughts regarding negotiations on his Twitter account Thursday night after the meeting with Smith and remains frustrated by the lack of progress.
“They’re not even close to a collective bargaining agreement,” Cartwright said. “They’re basically a lot of money away. He said it’s been a stall. He was just kind of just talking to us and kind of letting us know exactly what’s going to go on so it’s kind of tough for me and for all of the other guys. If there’s a lockout, it takes a lot away from a lot of people.”
A concern among players is the possibilty of being without a medical plan in the event of a lockout.

I guess the yeast infection will keep DHB out again. I assume Al has begun to realize that forcing DHB to start hampers our chances of winning against upper echelon teams. I bet he could play with his Gynecological issue, if need be, but he will not play because we need NFL caliber receivers to beat the Steelers on the road.

i think when schielns comes back we will have a legit passing game. he is a number one wr. the games that he has been in he has stood out and manage to get open and is a sure handed wr. he would free up murphy to continue making big plays. he is a legit number 2 wr.this would allow heyward bey to play slot and have less pressure on him. he seems to press to much and fight to catch the ball like his life depended on it. maybe with him in a lesser role he might flourish. ford could also mix in to the slot as well. and if we were to also use heyward-bey and ford on reverses it would bring our offense to new levels. on another note it would be nice to see the pistol formation wit macfadden at qb and bush to his side with either ford or heyward-bey behing him, just imagine how deadly that would be.

Injury updates
Chris Kemoeatu put in a full practice for the first time in two weeks and is ready to return to start at left guard after he missed the game Sunday with sprains of his knee and ankle.
Ward went through a second consecutive day of practice in full pads, but safety Will Allen still has not practiced. Both Ward and Allen left the New England game with concussions.
“I’ve been here seven years,” Arians said, “and that’s the best two practices Hines had in five of them because he hadn’t practiced on Wednesday in a long time. But he wanted to prove to everybody he was healthy and, boy, he had two great practices and showed a lot of the younger guys how to do it.”
Troy Polamalu (Achilles) did not practice again, Nick Eason also missed again with an illness, and Brett Keisel (hamstring) went through another limited practice.
Lawrence Timmons (hip) went through his first full practice of the week as did rookie cornerback Crezdon Butler (thigh).

November 19th, 2010 at 3:30 pm
Lol, all of them.
Just strange ideas, like his most recent about Jerry Jones trying to get an exception to the Rooney Rule.
———————-
Frankly, there are no extenuating circumstances. Every team that fires a head coach during the season must hire an interim coach. And after the season the team must comply with the Rooney Rule when hiring the next permanent coach, an assignment which rarely has much permanence.
Jones easily could have avoided the problem by: (1) not firing former head coach Wade Phillips until the season ends; or (2) signing Garrett to a contract that promised to make him the head coach after Phillips’ tenure ends.
Either way, Jones should be saying nothing about “extenuating circumstances” or anything else to suggest that he plans to hire Garrett. Jones must keep his cards pressed against his vest. If minority candidates believe that Jones is merely dotting his i’s and crossing his t’s (like he did nearly eight years ago when conducting a perfunctory telephone interview of Dennis Green, which forced the league to thereafter require in-person interviews under the Rooney Rule), minority candidates won’t agree to interview for the job — and Jones will be unable to avoid violating the Rooney Rule.
Unless he gets an “exemption,” which is fancy talk for “the rules don’t apply to me.”
———————–
Other than a situation like in Seattle a few years back, when the team knew that Holmgrenn was to retire and Jim Mora would succeed him, why would an owner/GM sign a head coach, then an assistant with a clause in the contract that he will be the next head coach?
Wade had the Cowboys in the playoffs last year and most ‘experts’ thought they would be in the Super Bowl this year. Why would Jason Garrett get that built into his contract unless Wade was planning on retiring. Or unless Jerry knew they were going to fail (in which case he would have fired Phillips prior to the start of the season, obviously).
And if he has an interim coach he knows for certain will be his head coach the next year, why should he have to interview anybody else, regardless of race?
Florio trys to flex his law degree muscle but it just comes off like he’s an idiot running a football blog where he contributes nothing, only gathers real journalists’ posts and ties them all into one site.
November 19th, 2010 at 3:32 pm
The leaked jersey looks are said to be a hoax; which is not hard to believe considering the actual links being so anonymous.
I think they all suit up. We really need DHB believe it or not. Too thin at WR and without a deep threat our TEs will have a tougher time. And I personally think the guy has a ton of talent.
November 19th, 2010 at 3:33 pm
Is he suggesting that Jones could have signed Garrett to a new contract mid season promising him to be the next head coach?
Frankly Florio’s posts are sometimes mind-boggling. And his lackey Rosenthal’s posts are chipping away at the IQs of those who read them.
Plus that guy’s a Raider-Hater. So F him.

I think the AFL throwback is as far from the classic Raiders jersey Al strays.
Even at that, he never wanted to change the silver numerals in the first place, but was forced because the black numerals showed better on TV.
Why would he change them? Best unis in sports, and that’s completely objective. I also think Notre Dame has classic-looking jersies and I hate ND.

One way to look at the Rooney rule is that it’s sort of forced racism, in a way. You’re forcing franchises to consider black head coaches, but do you force them to consider white head coaches? There’s certainly an argument there that such a system is just as racist as anything a white supremacist organization came up with, but that it benefits blacks instead of whites.
Another way to look at the Rooney Rule is to not only consider the need for leveling the playing field ethnically in corporate management in this country, but also consider that a system without the Rooney rule is bias in favor of whites, in its own way. For example, are you going to tell me there’s no black person anywhere in the football world who’s a better coach than, say, Tom Cable? Josh McDaniels? Todd Haley? Norv Turner? Seriously? No black man on the planet could do a better job than them?

I agree with the rule, but not if it’s not going to mean anything. If it’s just an interview to be an interview, why bother?
If the guy is already interim head coach and the owner/GM wants to roll with him, why force him to interview anyone?
It’s disingenuous and insulting to the ‘candidate.’

My point was I would make the populist arguement for the players, but a lot of them are already millionaires and the NFL has clearly taken steps to ensure their safety. Whether that makes the game soft (and I think it’s becoming that) is another matter entirely.

http://plus.sites.post-gazette.com/index.php/sports-town/gerry-dulac-chat/106423-gerry-dulacs-steelers-chat-transcript-111710
Tprod: Gerry, Saints, Bengals and Patriots had recorded less than 10 sacks through the season until they played the Steelers. They each recorded at least 4 sacks and Roethlisberger was often flushed very early. Any changes coming? Scott was “serviceable”, but Essex looked very poor. Or is Roethlisberger not going to his hot read?
Gerry Dulac: No, Ben is going to the hot read, that is not the problem. Part of the problem, of course, is that Ben is holding the ball longer than any other normal quarterback would, which, as you should know, is why he is not a normal QB. But that is no excuse for what happened to the Patriots. The Steelers underestimated their front line and Scott and Ramon Foster did not play very well. The only change is that Chris Kemoeatu should be back against the Raiders, who lead the AFC in sacks per pass play.

I never called DMC a bust but I thought he should have been 2nd to Bush. But with him coming on like this I have to also bite my tongue; which goes to show you should not be too judgemental with these players as we are not there day in and day out to know why he is starting.
And you are absolutely correct in not being so judgemental with DHB. When Grads came in the game he actually looked pretty darn good.
The passes he has been getting mostly from Camp have been waaayy off the mark.
Why he hasn’t burnt defenders like Ford? Truthfully, HE HAS! Go back a look at the tape. Even in the 1st week vs Tenn he was burning them deep but the passes were awful and the defenders were seriously hanging on him – remember? Quite frankly a lot of the passes thrown DHBs way have been pretty bad passes that gave him little chance to make a play.
He only has one real deep play for a TD this season which was an awesome play/route where he burnt 2 defenders.

And I would take the point of view you and JFB have on the owners, that they set the rules, is it what it is, anyone who doesn’t like it knows where the door is. But of course if the players really took them up on that ultimatum, the NFL would probably face grave losses. They’d have to completely rebuild the league with new faces. No superstars to build on. No Manning, Brady, or Brees. Basically just like strike football, scabs. Sure, some fans will go out of loyalty. But look at the attendance today, WITH the stars? Raiders have to contend for a 3 game win streak to get a sellout, it seems. Imagine taking away Nnamdi, Ford, Miller, Seymour? You’d be able to see the glare from the seats on Mars. 5 or so franchises would probably get cut loose, and I’d imagine they’d start with the smallest markets. Bye, Raiders. So, again, I’d like to take that point of view that you and JFB have taken, it’s just that the league and the Raiders would suffer greatly if the owners do. It sounds all macho to say it, but to do it would underestimate the power that the players have in solidarity.

Steeltyke: Gerry, excluding Pouncey, are the Steelers O-Linemen just too slow-footed to handle speed rushers and, in some cases, just too slow-witted to see and react to D-Line stunts? After all, they all have multi years experience in the NFL except Pouncey & Foster.
Gerry Dulac: Look, I’m not going to sit here and defend the offensive line because they did not play well. But, on at least two of the sacks, the right side of the line did not get the call from Roethlisberger when he slid the protection at the line of scrimmage on one; and the back did not pick up the blitz on another. Those things happen. Remember, this was an offensive line that had three newcomers to the team — Pouncey, Flozell Adams and Jonathan Scott — and a fourth (Ramon Foster) making only his fifth start. Cohesive would not be the operative word to describe the unit.

Not at all. I get off work at 4 and I rarely post outside of work. Sometimes I check in later on to see if Jerry has posted anything else.
I didn’t really side with the owners at all. I’m ever the proletariat and we rarely disagree when it comes to politics, I just said it was tougher to defend millionaires.
Obviously, the average NFL salary is probably less than 1M but when so many of these young guys in the limelight going to clubs, getting involved in guns, drugs, assault, sexual assault, etc. rather than selling insurance in the offseason (like the old days), the owners have a case in the court of public opinion.
Does anybody see Art Rooney get plastered and drive 110 miles an hour on the freeway smoking a blunt with some underage girls in the back? The average person probably thinks the players make too much as is.
I disagree based on the type of money baseball players make in comparison. The NFL generates the most revenue, whereas MLB players make 3-4 times as much.
The players have a case and could shut down professional football and ruin some franchises and obviously their owners as well.

What would you say is DHB’s best game, Lefty? It’s hard to argue the Seattle game. Maybe StL?
The 69 yard catch and run for a TD is what we’ve been waiting to see from him.
November 19th, 2010 at 7:20 pm
I have a feeling before it’s over DHB is going to make some people wonder how they could’ve evet doubted him. Yeah no doubt he is struggling but does anyone remember what Roddie White was before the last 2 years with Matt Ryan. The guy I think of the most wjhen it come sto DHB is Vernon Davis although a TE he was hidden in their blocking scheme they never reall used him in the passing game.
I challenge anyone to shw me a more dangerous TE in the passing game at this point. Another is Shannon Sharpe who had hands of stone couldn’t run routes and was more of the (P) word which gets coaches fired and he’s in the HOF so If you’re smart you wait and see. DHB has already shown some flashes he’s just inconsistent. Same as was a guy on this team who areguably is a MVP candidate. They both came in with loads of talent and promise it took DMC 2 years to show and fulffill that emmense talent at a position that’s much more easily adaptable than WR. Both came in barely turning 21 years old. DHB should be a rookie at best he uses this year to get ver the hump and comes back next year and in the same fashion as DMC dominates this league.
It’s not nearly as far fetched as you want to believe it happens all the time.

Roddy White, Vernon Davis, Dwayne Bowe, Wes Welker, Robert Meachem, Brandon Lloyd, Mike Williams… the league is full of guys who took two years or more to have a breakout year.
DHB is far from a lost cause, it’s just a shame that his team seems like they’re on the verge of being real contenders – not just for the playoffs, but for being one of the better teams in the AFC – and he’s not quite ready to contribute in the way the Raiders need.
November 19th, 2010 at 7:56 pm
besides Chaz & Boller (3rd qb) who else will be inactive, with this many healthy players:
53 down to 45 + 1, we’ll need -8:
Boller is the +1;
Chaz
Bruce C. (still in development)
W. McFadden
Nnamdi (we will need him all year, best to be 100%)
Bruce Davis
Bennet
DHB or Nick
are my picks

********** NO VASELINE **********
November 19th, 2010 at 8:13 pm
Young American….there’s quite a difference. I still hold out hope that DHB will turn into something good. But he’s coming along VERY slowly except for one game. he has 0 or 1 catch in 13 out of 19 of the games he’s started. That means as our STARTING Wide Receiver getting 0 catches. That means we don’t have others there with those opportunities (as he’s often targeted many times even with those 0 or 1 catches).
November 19th, 2010 at 8:13 pm
its amazing how plp want to ride off a players after 2-3yrs. With that logic, we should have dumped nnamdi and Dmac a long time ago.
I agree DHB hasnt played well and been a major contributor, but he’s young and has a good work ethic.
DHB is not a Jamarcus, that has the tool set and is lazy. DHB has the speed, size and ablity, but the game is still to fast for him
November 19th, 2010 at 8:44 pm
People criticize and support the players they choose, and rationalize it any way they can. Purely subjective.
November 19th, 2010 at 8:47 pm
The only thing that keeps me as a skeptic a bit with DHB is that he hasn’t really proved it anywhere. It’s not like D McFadden who was a BEAST in College. DHB wasn’t really all that productive in College as a WR either.
But, what he does have going for him is that he’s a hard worker and has the natural gift of speed/size.
November 19th, 2010 at 8:52 pm
DHB is horrible. I don’t see him getting any better. But I’ll give him one more season before I call him a bust. I think every player deserves 3 years. But I’ll keep making fun of him until he proves me wrong.
And if I had to guess at Sunday’s inactives, if Nnamdi and DHB can both go:
Boller
Bennett
Schilens
BCampbell
Loper
Davis
WMcFadden
Either Howard or Williams
November 19th, 2010 at 8:55 pm
I’d be very surprised if DHB ends up being a Roddy White type talent, but it wouldn’t shock me to see him become a serviceable player for the Raiders.
That said, I also wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up being a total bust.
Bottom line? It’s frustrating that he hasn’t come along faster, but it’s simply too early to tell what kind of player he’ll end up being.
November 19th, 2010 at 8:56 pm
Who do you think was a bigger reach in the eyes of the pundits Nnamdi or DHB?
November 19th, 2010 at 8:57 pm

November 19th, 2010 at 8:56 pm

+++++++++++++++++++++++++
Has to be DHB. Nnamdi was taken late first round, DHB was taken #7 overall. And if I’m not mistaken the experts had them both projected as early-to-mid 2nd rounders.
November 19th, 2010 at 9:08 pm
He was projected to be a mid-round pick who really didn’t have a position. He played safety in sollege and when Mr Davis drafted him as a corner they laughed. Same as they did with Lester Hayes who was a LB in college who converted to corner.
It is really silly to discount very young players especially when they have the work ethic of DHB. Nnamdi just mde himself into what he is so did Lester. Rod Martin ne of the best LB’s in Raider history was an after thought late in the 12th rnd and turned into one of the most dominant OLB’s ever.
DHB is 22 years old with a great attitude and work ethic I imple wouldn’t bet against him. The probability of his success is actually very high. Hard work almost always pays off. I would say 90% of the time. nly extenuating circumstances are really the only thing against him which is beyond his contrl.
November 19th, 2010 at 9:24 pm
It’s no different than DMC IMO he could’ve been satiusfied with what he was as a rookie which was a nice player and a very good weapon. But instead he went to work to get better and he worked on every aspect of his game running skills in particular. Nw he’s arguably one of the top 2 HB’s in the league. He could’ve stayed at maybe 15-10 and had a great career. But now look at him you have to objectively put him in the arguement as the best HB in the game.
All DHB has to do is put in the work with that kind of athletic ability and sooner or later he will scare the pants off every DB in this game. He is T.O. with world class speed just think about that for a second this guy is bigger than DMC and faster. Sooner or later it’s going to come together and when it does it will be hell on wheels.

Evening Gentlemen, The ‘experts’ are picking the steelers to win.
Exhibit A:
Raiders at Steelers
Wilcots: Steelers
Lombardi: Steelers
Baldinger: Steelers
If the Raiders win, which I’m saying they will, I am going to call all three of them and let them know their ‘expert’ status has been revoked. You can read more of what the ‘experts’ have to say at this link
http://www.nfl.com/
They are even giving video clips on the Raiders running attack, breaking it down for the Steelers to see, trying to convince me Oakland cannot run against the Pittsburgh D. Thus, we have no patience for a balanced passing attact and the Raiders will be rendered to struggling against the mighty Steeler D.
The yellow towel crew will be in for a few surprises, along with the ‘experts’.

I think Cable and Hue will go to Reece and Ford, screen and a DHB around end in taking the focus off MAC. Once Oakland has success, it will open up the lanes for MAC and he will chew them up, spit them out and the Raiders come home 6-4. Marshall Law will be imposed so Rottenburger and co. will struggle.
Oakland 30
Pittsburgh 13
November 19th, 2010 at 9:42 pm
If it were up to the experts the same team would win the SB every year. They go with the %’s and if you look at the records they’re right at 50% correct with only 2 options which is terrible.
I firmly believe we have a better team if it were at the blackhole I might gaurantee a win but it’s on the road. We have to be 10 points better to win our defense is hands down better than theirs. Their defense is based on stopping the run. We’re 2nd best running team but we can throw and we have great speed outside and they can’t cover. That puts them in a quandry if they stop our running game they’re in trouble…………period
One thing I want t say is this, the Steelers give up huge pints in the 4th qrtr if we are down in the 4th they cannot stop us.
November 19th, 2010 at 9:58 pm
Watchng that video Mr Dukes is misguided he thinks we have to be patient in the passing game. lol
The Pat’s were patient in the passing game because they had to be, they have no speed if they had Randy Moss they wouldn’t have been. We’re going to attack the Steelers deep and force them to cover every blade of grass. It’s a very different approach to the game that we take than most teams.
The only team that can do what we do is the Eagles. They come at ypou with speed on the opening play. And we will as well. So their thinking is faulty we don’t want o be patient we want to kick your ass with the pass………….period
November 19th, 2010 at 10:01 pm

Now that is a big key to success. Being a 4th qtr team. Applies to a lot of sports. Knowing when to bury a team, having the stamina to hold a team down, having a desire to compete to the last second. Getting stronger as the game winds down. Knowing how to play to win with a lead, not that prevent crap, which means playing not to loose. This team is special by the mere turn around, let alone all the young talents, Seymour and the coaching staff.

If Big Sey isn’t considered for defensive player of the year then there ought to be an invetigation. This defense is as much his defense as it is Marshall’s sure I give Coach Marshall all thecredit in the world for the gameplan but the execution of said gameplan is Big Sey. He has got these guy’s owning up to their responsibilities and playing the defense according t what coach Marshall wants. On every team there are leaders those leaders must come from the players. He didn’t start it at the beginning of the season he started it when he road n that bus with the rookies and got off first. He set the tone for everything they would do this year. He coaches more and leads by example as well as putting his foot in their rears if need be.
When he got off that rookie bus he became a RAIDER as much as Nnamdi or anyone who’s ever wore that uni. Big Sey loves playing here and it shows, he demands that when you take that field your head and heart are engaged in winning football. I have watched him because of the previous phonies that came here to get a paycheck and check out. That guy is in their ear challeging them snap after snap. I really don’t think TK loses that weight any other way.
Mike Mitachell has bought in and playing damn good football. If somehow Campbell can get his side of the ball to respond to him anything like that the Raiders could very well win the SB. I know that sounds CRAZY but I’m telling you I saw it with Gannon and Rod Woodson. Campbell must take the baton and demand with his play and his leadership to get everything he can out of that young unit. If he does look out the sky is the limit.

Steelers are seriously banged up…
PITTSBURGH (AP)—Steelers safety Troy Polamalu(notes) has returned to practice after sitting out two days with an Achilles’ tendon injury and is listed as probable for Sunday’s game against Oakland.
Also practicing Friday were defensive end Brett Keisel(notes) (hamstring), who has missed nearly all of four games, and linebacker Lawrence Timmons(notes) (hip). Keisel is listed as questionable and Timmons is probable.
Left guard Chris Kemoeatu(notes) (ankle) also is probable after being held out of the New England game on Sunday. He went through full practices Thursday and Friday.
Safety Will Allen will miss a second successive game with a concussion that occurred against Cincinnati on Nov. 8.
Sounds like a lot of guys will be playing hurt and not 100%. This has to help Oakland’s chances.

On one hand Priest is 100% correct that some of the better WR’s took a year or two to get reallly good and produce. Names like Cliff Branch, Roddy White, Dwayne Bowe and Plaxico.
But with EVERY one of these WR’s, they were elite Pro Bowl level players in their 3rd year. And besides Cliff Branch, they all put better numbers than DHB will for his first two years (unless he goes crazy the last 7 weeks).
Roddy White (3rd year) 83 for 1,200
Cliff Branch (3rd year) 1000 yards led NFL with 13 receiving TD’s
Dwayne Bowe (2nd season) 1000 yards 7 TD’s
Plaxico (3rd season) 1,300 yards
So DHB can get his “pass” for these two years, but I searched high and low and didn’t find one really good WR who struggled for three seasons before turning the corner.
Next year is make or break for DHB and his “potential”. If he can’t muster up a 70 catch 1000 yard 7 TD season, and is still “Clearing out” and having 0 or 1 catch games, than the writing is on the wall.

mornin’ nation,
priest, you are spot on in #141, the raiders could very well gel into a super bowl winner!! i am not one to make predictions about won/loss and scores,, but i see some things in this team i hadn’t seen in a long time..strong leadership and a will to win and get better..if campbell steps up and has a good day in pittsburg the sky will be the limit. the offense will have as much confidence as our defense has.. and our D is lights out now!!!

If you ask me, which WR would I take from the 2009 draft class….Hakeem Nicks (29th overall) would be my answer!

i have watched several conference games, i don’t see any of the division leaders having any more weapons then we have. yeah there is brady and peyton but they don’t have all the pieces, the ravens seem solid with good play on all three teams, but i think the raiders have as good a defense as any of these teams and a better running game than any of them…you win big games with defense..

R8erwill, thus isn’t 1970. The steelers patriots colts packers allwin playoff games because of their offense. You win games and playoff games by scoring points.
November 20th, 2010 at 10:51 am
alex7. i agree and haven’t bought any playoff tickets yet, but i do see trends here, the raiders are one of the hottest teams today, they’ve won three in a row. we haveas good a defense as any team in the league. if we beat pottsburgh tomorrow that will be the decent team on the road victory you mention.. i agree campbell is no manning, but then again who is??? we are strong in most places. our special teams are doing well, the oline is getting better by the play and we are healthy.. all good signs!! the youth on this team are contributing, and we are deep at most positions..i like our chances…
November 20th, 2010 at 11:01 am
alex7,#168 are you kidding me?? you “win games by scoring points”..if you don’t score you lose, right? well my point is defense wins big games, and your statement backs that up…if the defense stops your team from scoring ,,, you lose…it’s pretty simple

Look at most of the recent Super Bowl teams.
Elite QB’s and WR’s. Saints, Colts, Cardinals, Steelers, Giants, Patriots. Average O-lines, great D-lines. That’s the trend these days for successful teams.
Pittsburgh had the best defense going into the Super Bowl, and gave up 23 points and over 400 yards to the Cardinals. Why did they win? They drafted a QB, TE and WR in the first round and made plays at the end of every game when it counted.
It’s all about offense these days.
November 20th, 2010 at 11:33 am

Hot team? Beating 3 lousy teams means nothing when we play the steelers or chargers or colts.
We are one loss away from losing this hot status. It means nothing. The niners were cold and did what to us?
Our 23rd ranked run defense and the d that gave up 400 yards to Rivers is not as good as the Jets, Giants, packers or saints.

Damn Alex,
The team is winning games and is in the thick of it. Let’s say you are right…this is a helluva lot more fun and interesting than the alternative we’ve seen the last 7.
The fact they show improvement was good…the fact they are in the thick of it for the playoffs is simply outstanding.
I look forward to being at Heinz Field tomorrow to watch the Raiders take the next step!
November 20th, 2010 at 11:49 am
It’d be nice if our Offense could rain down some bombs from that same Storm mentality, too.
If LMurphy is really healthy…the Steelers CAN’T possibly cover all the athletic WR’s we’ll be throwing at them. JFord is for real, and every DB in the League knows his name…and doesn’t want to be the next highlight reel victim. If DHB is healthy, even better…this is exactly the type of game, and Defense, a big physical WR is drafted to play in. NMiller/JLH will probably also make an impact.
With Zach Miller back…and MReece and DMC and MBush out of the backfield, the Raiders Offense is loaded. Jason Campbell needs to put all that talent to work for him…it’s all there.
November 20th, 2010 at 11:50 am
I shouldn’t say it is ALL about offense these days. Great defenses can carry you, especially against weaker opponents.
It’s always been that great WR’s really can’t be covered. Now D-lines beat up on even really good O-lines (2008 Giants) as well.
You can have a great defense, but you better find ways to put up points, because you can have a great defense but Brady or Peyton might roll into town and still hang 30 on you.
November 20th, 2010 at 11:52 am

Great Defenses are given nicknames, throughout the history of the League. Our Defense hasn’t done anything to be called great yet, far from it…but, WHEN the time comes that it does, it’ll have a moniker given to it by others.
November 20th, 2010 at 11:57 am
i wouldn’t care who you had on o. you can’t win in this game without defense. all the teams in the super bowl games that i remember had good ones.. now maybe in madden you can put up enough points to win but in the real world defense wins games!!!
November 20th, 2010 at 11:58 am
WHEN the time comes that it does, it’ll have a moniker given to it by others.
*******************************
Exactly, great nicknames are given by others, not created by the individual(s).
No need to pull a Costanza here and start demanding we be called “T-bone”.
November 20th, 2010 at 12:02 pm
You play great defense…that alone gets you into the playoffs….to win a Super Bowl does require a good offense.
That’s why I don’t get worked up about the offense….it is all about the Raider defense.
THe interception in the end zone against the Chiefs…forced fumbles and INTS against the Broncos…
EVen the game against the 49ers…the defense gave us a chance.
The Raiders do not have the offense yet to expect 30 points a game. They just dont’…they are getting there but not yet.
Run the ball, stop the run…win games!
November 20th, 2010 at 12:03 pm
R8erwill,
Saints and Colts had great defenses? Cardinals?
Here’s the most recent Super Bowl scores:
31-17
27-23
17-13
29-17
21-10
24-21
32-29
48-21
Yes the Giants did win on defense, but they are the exception not the rule. The Bears D was the best in the league going to their bowl, but they couldn’t weather Rex Grossman burying them and they almost gave up 30 points. Patriots great D of 2003? Gave up 29 points and almost lost.
The fact is, to win a Super Bowl, you have to be good at everything. But elite defenses with no offense usually die in the divisional round of the playoffs to Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Kurt Warner or Drew Brees.
November 20th, 2010 at 12:05 pm
Vegas — No need to dance before reaching the end zone, for sure (hate it)…but, since people started throwing names out the other day, I wanted to throw that one out there before a bad one takes hold!
November 20th, 2010 at 12:06 pm
Right now let’s put the Super Bowl talk aside,
The Raiders are just trying to win a game man. Win a doggone game! That’s it!
THe game tomorrow is going to be a battle. Its not going to be a smooth game like the Broncos or Hawks. The STeelers are a good football team…the Raiders a re good football team.
Its going to be a great game….hopefully the good guys pull it out!
November 20th, 2010 at 12:07 pm
If you want to find a common ground of all Super Bowl teams, it is elite WR’s?
Saints and Colts last year, all kinds of first rounders at WR and TE?
Cardinals-Steelers? Same thing.
Pats-Giants? Plax and Moss scoring TD’s in the 4th quarter to take leads.
Most all Super Bowl teams of late have had a first rounder at WR, if not two of them, and maybe even a first-rounder at TE.
November 20th, 2010 at 12:08 pm

I just want to win the division, and get one home playoff game.
Win that and I will be fine, even if we get boat-raced in New England or New York the next week.
This team needs the youngsters to play under bright lights at the end of the season. No substitute for experience.
November 20th, 2010 at 12:16 pm
SnB,
I hope Campbell comes out and lights it up. But he has been a slow starter in some games this year, and not sure if Hue will have the patience.
He said he contemplated benching him week 1, did so in week 2, let Bruce start the next few weeks and even brought him back out at halftime after he was clearly hurt in the Dolts game.
I am convinced Hue Jackson likes Bruce Gradkowski more than myself. If Jason struggles for a half, I have no doubt in my mind they will make the switch.
Like I said, hopefully we are winning at halftime and it doesn’t come down to hoping Bruce pulls out a miracle.
November 20th, 2010 at 12:33 pm
i never said the raiders were going to the super bowl. i do think they are as good now as any team in this league and better than some of the perenials..we have a good o.. maybe not great wide receivers, but we can, and do, put up points, maybe not great but we can..and our d is lights out..if the d causes a blackout in pittsboog tomorrow, i don’t see any team that is a sure impediment to our going deep in the play-offs
November 20th, 2010 at 12:40 pm
It’s almost impossible to win a Superbowl without a very good QB.
Once every few decades a Trent Dilfer is carried by an absolutely dominating defense, but this is the exception to the rule.
This Raider defense is much improved, but let’s not get carried away. They’re not the 85 Bears, 70’s Steel Curtain or 90’s Ravens.
The primary reason the Raids have sucked the past 7 years has been an inability to score points. Especially apalling has been the passing game. QB play with JaMoron was almost impossible to watch. An offensive line that couldn’t pass block at all. Anemic WR play.
It was almost the perfect storm of ineptitude.
Yup, Raider games are fun to watch again, and the team is relevant again.
But it’s hard to imagine the Raids going deep into the playoffs, or to be honest, even making the playoffs with JaJason at the helm.
JaJason sucks.
November 20th, 2010 at 12:41 pm

I wouldn’t say the Colt team that beat the Bears had an average defense. They did have Freeney and Sanders. But for most of that year, they were dead last statistically against the run.
That team was carried by Peyton and the offense and managed to overcome a somewhat average defense.
November 20th, 2010 at 12:57 pm
ArmChair, I disagree with you assessment of the 49ers defense. They had a great defense, at least for their last couple of Super Bowls.
November 20th, 2010 at 1:03 pm
The better question to ask is – can anyone name a team that’s won a Superbowl without a very good QB ?
Very few exceptions to that rule.

Heck, besides Rex Grossman I can’t think of too many lousy QBs that even made it to the Superbowl.

Expect Pitt to run Mendenhall until the Raids show they can stop it. Especially to the right. RM runs better to that side. They’re going to try to duplicate the Arien Foster run.
Plus they don’t want to expose BR to a Raider pass rush that leads the NFL in sacks per pass attempt.
This could play to our advantage as we don’t want to get into a shootout with the Squeelers.
Not with JaJason at the helm.

===================================
SnB, this is where we strongly disagree.
JaJason isn’t an unknown.
I really don’t understand why you say that.
He’s started in the NFL for 5+ years and over 60 games.
His play has been average at best over this time, and for the majority of his starts with the Raids, he’s been horrible.
I’d like to forget his play in Tenn, against the Rams, in SF, and 90% of the KC game…but I can’t and won’t.
Grads, on the other hand, has about a dozen NFL starts, with a large percentage of them coming as a raw rookie in TB.
His play as a starter for the Raids has actually been quite good. In fact, when compared to JaJason’s body of work as a Raider, it’s very good.
It makes sense to say Gradkowski is an unknown. I’ll agree with that. I’m also on record as saying that with some more starts, surrounded by a decent cast, Grads will emerge as an upper tier NFL QB and could be the Raid’s long term solution at QB.
I know that’s not a popular view considering Grad’s physical limitations. But it’s still one that I hold.
JaJason sucks.

Let’s see how the Raider D plays tomorrow in Pittsburgh. If they have another dominant performance, then it’s definitely time to anoint them with a moniker.
Right now, I wanna see a little more sustained consistency from our defense…

I have to work tommorrow. I’m gonna miss the whole effin game.

Relax with the go and die stuff, Baucey.
I realize comparing anyone to JaMoron is the ultimate insult, and that you like JaJason – but take it easy.
By the way, your boy JaJason was here in Reno with DHB last Saturday night.
They were at the Peppermill. Ate dinner at Oceano and played some poker later.
Hope JaJason plays poker better than he QBs, or else he probably lost his azz.

alex, i think the raiders defense is dominant based on statistics and what i have personally seen.. they have made big plays when we needed them most. big turnovers and big plays.. and all of the players are contributing. it is not just big rich. sveral players are performing at a high level..
November 20th, 2010 at 2:48 pm
isn’t that a bit selective? you have seen all the good running backs gash the raiders defense

Our Defense will win a Super Bowl!
Just like the Bucs won one….with Brad Johnson!
***********************************
Got to take offense with this one.
Brad Johnson had the 3rd best QB rating that year (92+) and 22 TD’s to 6 int’s.
He made the Pro Bowl and had the lowest INT to pass ratio of any QB in the league.
He was a very good QB that year, statistically one of the best in the league.

foster johnson even charles had a 5 yard average, gore.

Tedford is a joke at this stage, but man that Andrew Luck is something else.
How can Tedford have all these rocket-armed tall QB’s, but other than when he lucked into Aaron Rodgers, every one of his QB’s makes bad decisions and has no accuracy?
November 20th, 2010 at 2:59 pm
and to get back to the discussion about offense vs.defense, someone posted rams won without great defense. let me remind you it was a td saving tackle at the goal line that gave them the win.. mike jones? they had a very good d..

Do you honestly think the JaJason thing is clever? It just makes you seem like a five-year-old.

On the Steelers: Offense faces identity crisis
Friday, November 19, 2010
By Ed Bouchette, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Injury Updates:

The year the Colts won the Super Bowl they had the worst rushing defense in the NFL and set the NFL record for giving up the most rushing yards in one game that season.
Last years Super Bowl featured the 26th and 18th ranked NFL defenses, but the 1st and 9th ranked offenses.

Keep the score low and allow the offense to stay within game plan and also afford to take a risk or two.
That’s how you win.
Great defense, running the football and limit turnovers!

Watched the Bill Parcell’s special last night on the NFL network. All I can say is that I hope when he un-retires again, he comes to Oakland as the GM and revitalizes the Raiders back to the dynasty they once were. Parcells is a friend of AD and could get along with him. Based on what I saw, he could get the best out of the talent here and as important, make all of our coaches, including TC, better than they ever thought they could be. There is absolutely no doubt in my ind hat we could be in the SB within 2-3 years.

#263 great defense and running the ball can get the raiders to the “GAME” with either of our qb’s..is what i am saying.. we have the ingredients, and we are in position to be winners in sb 45(?)

11 11/21 @ Pit L
12 11/28 vs. Mia W
13 12/5 @ SD L
14 12/12 @ Jac W
15 12/19 vs. Den L
16 12/26 vs. Ind L
17 1/2 @ KC W
Here’s my updated guesses for the rest of the season. We finish 8-8. If somehow we finish 10-6 and make it to the playoffs, than that would be great. And I would be happy to say I was wrong. But the realistic side of me tells me otherwise. 8-8 us still a huge improvement and who’s to say that won’t be enough to win the division. We would be 4-2 in the division and that would be enough for any tie breakers if needed.
The Denver and Indi games are very winnable. So that would be the 10-6. Let’s hope so. GO RAIDERS!

SuperBowl talk is not appropriate yet. The very best teams don’t win Super Bowls.
Right now, for this team, its all about 1 thing. And that’s winning tomorrow.
Running the ball, stopping the run and not turning the ball over can get this team into the playoffs
