Campbell will start vs. Miami
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, November 21st, 2010 at 1:36 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Raiders coach Tom Cable with regard to pulling Jason Campbell in favor of Bruce Gradkowski at his post-game press conference:
“(Jason) will be the starter next week. There is no issue there. As we could all see, it didn’t make a lot of difference.”
Cable said the injury suffered by Trevor Scott “looks to be” an ACL injury. That would mean he is out for the year.
He said he didn’t see the play in which Richard Seymour was ejected for striking Ben Roethlisberger in the face.

Jason campbell sucks. We needed Nnamdi bad, and I love some richard seymour.
November 21st, 2010 at 1:43 pm
As we could all see, it didn’t make a lot of difference
No it did. With a demoralized group of players Bruce drove down the field. Is Cable blind?
Damn we are going to lose vs Miami as well
November 21st, 2010 at 1:43 pm
i think seymour thought big ben was trying to grab his junk, just defending himself
November 21st, 2010 at 1:44 pm
Al wants Campbell, it’s Campbell. Why question Al? He won 3 Super Bowls.
November 21st, 2010 at 1:44 pm
i wouldn’t panic yet, miami is winable…of course they too are coming off an embarassing loss, so cable better prepare the team to compete four 4 quarters and not just show up.
November 21st, 2010 at 1:45 pm
Draft a C.
Gaither for RT.
Bruce Campbell and a mid/late round pick should hopefully compete for RG.
Re-sign Gallery and Loper.
Re-sign Seymour and Huff.
Let Walter McFadden compete for a starting job, bring in a rookie mid-round pick, let Routt walk.
Re-sign Bush.
Look for a WR either in the draft or via trade/FA. Larry Fitzgerald wants out of Arizona. Vincent Jackson will be a FA. Might be able to find a late-round value pick in the draft. The receiving corps needs more help.
Now, what to do about QB? Campbell will stay, that’s a given. But they need someone else to make things competitive.
November 21st, 2010 at 1:45 pm
Shouldn’t Big Ben be charged with a Taunting penalty as well? or penalised for provoking another player? Damn rapist.
November 21st, 2010 at 1:45 pm
Al has 3 Super Bowl rings. Last I checked, that’s 3 more than Cable. If Al wants Campbell, let it be Campbell. Al knows what he’s doing. His vision works glacially. It takes time, but he knows what he’s doing. Right? I hope so.
November 21st, 2010 at 1:45 pm
when you look at oakland’s record, you have to start lookign more at who they won and lost against to get an idea of where they are as a team. beatdown loses against quality teams. steelers, titans, texans… crappy frustratign loses against equally crappy teams like arizon and sf. then who have we beaten? a bad rams team. a bad denver team. a bad seahakws team an out-of-sorts san diego team and a kc team that’s probably taken advantage of their weak schedule… i guess we are what we are. a 500 team capable of feasting on bad teams and just as easily getting destroyed teams that may be upper crust level clubs.
still, it’s a good feeling to be relevant again. 8-8 is a lot better than 4-12 every year.
November 21st, 2010 at 1:46 pm
Hopefully Veldheer bounces back and handles Cameron Wake better than he did James Harrison. That was a huge test for him, and in the long run it’ll be good for him.
November 21st, 2010 at 1:46 pm
well when you own the team and are paying the checks, you can do anything you want, even if it hurts your team. i really think jr is better then campbell, at least his excuse was codeine abuse.
November 21st, 2010 at 1:47 pm
Play calling lost us this game.No screens or short passes to move the chains and open things up.On Defense I saw two or more occasions where a LB covered wide receivers come on guys whats that.We didn,t run the ball enough in 1st half.
November 21st, 2010 at 1:48 pm
Did someone asked for a QB? Did you see the underthrown screen to Ford by Campbell? I can do better than that. Sign me!
November 21st, 2010 at 1:50 pm
the steelers wanted this game and it showed. they were not going to be embarrassed on their home field and anything short of a sound win was not good enough. the raiders did not come in prepared on with any intensity, they clearly were still on their bye vacation.

If Campbell is still the starter, I hope Al Davis has a pep talk with the O-line this week.
Also, we still have Wednesday and Thursday practice for Campbell to pull a muscle.
November 21st, 2010 at 1:55 pm
Campbell is a deer in headlights when things aren’t going his way.
November 21st, 2010 at 1:55 pm
This was a total team loss. Everyone playing and coaching sucked. Seymour was playing but got bounced out of the game after he responded to Rothlisberger’s taunt.

Man I was delighted to see Harrison hitting Campbell after the INT return for TD for 2 reasons:
1. TD gets called back
2. Campbell out of the game
Unfortunately only 1 of the 2 became reality

Actually, they did do that on the first drive. And it at least got them down for their only score.
I was b!tching here about this back in the first half. They inexplicably decided to have Jason take 5-7 step drops and look long down the field. With that Steelers pass rush, it was a fool’s game.
It’s almost like they panicked early and thought they had to swing for the fences. Unreal.
Good teams don’t do that crap when they’re losing by a TD or two. But then again, good teams have better coaching.

A QB and an O-line. Let’s not forget the BIG UGLIES. 60% of them need to go. You figure out who the 60% are. It’s not a hard choice.
November 21st, 2010 at 1:57 pm
With a pocket mobile guy who is both durable and can make the downfield throws easily, this team is definitely a contender. I’m a big Josh Freeman fan, personally. Unfortunately he’s not going to be in Silver and Black any time soon.
I just don’t know who is out there who would be a good fit for this offense. Andrew Luck is accurate, has great awareness, a big arm, and can flat-out move when he gets forced out of the pocket. Trade Nnamdi to the Panthers for that #1 pick, trade the 2012 1st rounder for Larry Fitzgerald? I wish…
November 21st, 2010 at 1:59 pm
I think if Jared Gaither gets back in shape, it would be stupid not to sign him. He can play both tackle positions, and at his best he’s a franchise-caliber player.
C and RG would be the other question marks. Mike Pouncey and Bruce Campbell? Or draft ND’s Chris Stewart if Campbell isn’t progressing?
November 21st, 2010 at 1:59 pm
Plp gotta realize that both grad and Campbell arent gonna win games for the raiders, they just arent that good. ( but not many are)
Missing Nnamdi and Seymour hurt the def and it showed. So stop talkn about trading nnamdi. ( if u think we should, ur an idiot)
Biggest disappointment was the play calling. U cant have 2 weeks off in the nfl and jus put up 3 pts. Hue jackson, seems like he calls plays one way ( vs SF and Pit) and calls them other ways (vs den, SD, kc)
November 21st, 2010 at 2:01 pm
well you can see what happend without nnamdi in there, man to man defense is tough and you need the best to play it.
November 21st, 2010 at 2:03 pm
g’nite everyone, just chalk it up to campbell and two week vacation.
November 21st, 2010 at 2:03 pm
Right side was a real issue with serious LB blitz pressure….when are we gonna see Bruce Campbell?
Huge momentum killers
- Chris Johnson giving up that early third down pass (what sucks is he was there to make a play but his awareness tank was on E once again)
- Louis Murphy fumbling a first down when it was still an 11 point game. Could’ve gave Campbell some much needed confidence and possibly that drive could’ve ended in points.
- Louis Murphy not noticing the sideline eventually comes into play when you across the freakin’ field in a straight line and not dragging his feet to pull in another easy first down…..
- Campbell’s rushed off target pass to Marcel that resulted in a pick….That play was on both Campbell and Marcel ’cause it could’ve also been caught.
- Seymour’s punch…but F it, I’m glad Ben got rocked in the face for taking advantage of little 19 yr old girl in a nasty ass public restroom of all places….I’ll call that sequence ‘Juvenile Justice’
But we could’ve used the big guy later even though our run D was really solid; and it was the pass D that killed us….
and that brings me to our secondary – Nnamdi, we miss you!!!!

Being a team without a QB is tough, too.
I love having Nnamdi as a Raider, and if it were me in the GM seat, I wouldn’t trade him for just anybody… but if in return it would give the Raiders the franchise QB they so obviously need? It’s worth considering.
The secondary has played well without Nnamdi before. Although this certainly one of those days…. But if Walter McFadden progresses nicely, and the Raiders can draft a guy in the 3rd or 4th round to bring along behind Routt or CJ… There are certainly a lot worse moves you can make.
November 21st, 2010 at 2:06 pm
Again, though, I would only consider moving Nnamdi if a QB and a draft pick came along, too.
Maybe him for Kolb and the Eagles’ first-rounder?
I don’t think it would happen, but the Raiders are missing an integral part of what it takes to be a truly great team in this league.

November 21st, 2010 at 2:13 pm

November 21st, 2010 at 2:14 pm
It all begins at the LOS. Our O-line is simply inadequate. SATELE, CARLISLE & WALKER must be replaced. We should draft Mike Pouncey for the Center position. Develop BCampbell quickly for RT and see if MHenderson is salvageable at RG. Or, use Loper at RG. Changes are in order.
Yes we need a franchise QB. Neither JC or BG are real starting QB;s Maybe the Redskins will part with McNabb. Shannahan doesn’t want him. Will be interesting to see what happens there. But above all we need a dominating O-Line. Gallery & Veldheer will suffice. The rest must go.
November 21st, 2010 at 2:16 pm
Dolphins also have a banged up o-line that might be without Jake Long for the rest of the season. And Marshall checked out early in that game.
I don’t think Thigpen is as bad as he looked against the Bears, but his team abandoned the run early and put the game on his shoulders with no protection or real receiving options. If the Dolphins trot him out there in the same position next week, the Raiders will have a good matchup to get their confidence back.
I wouldn’t have minded seeing Thigpen come to the Raiders, but it’s not like the Raiders even have guys on par with Davone Bess or Jake Long, so I don’t see it turning out much better.
November 21st, 2010 at 2:16 pm
and Hue having 2 wks and not finding ways to get Mcfadden the ball in exotic looks….the raiders live and die with the offensive.
I dnt get how u see on Monday nite fb,watching tom brady go fast pace, muiltiple candence, spread offense… and still have Campbell do the complete oppoiste

During the Cal-Stanford game the announcers mentioned that you can be competitive with a QB who manages the game but you need a better than avg. to great QB to win the Pac-10.That statement also applies to the NFL and all we have are 2 QBs who are game managers. We should try and get Kolb because Philly won’t let Vick go and he is young enough to be their QB for years.
November 21st, 2010 at 2:28 pm
I’m not overly excited with Marshall as DC. If memory serves me correct, Wade Phillips was a more than decent DC. Maybe he’ll be in our future.
Hue Jackson puzzles me. One week great exciting memorable play calling and NADA the following week. There’s simply no consistency or creativity. We all need a permanent starting QB. He’s not on the roster right now. Keep looking. the O-line needs overhauling NOW! Let’s start experimenting with replacing the RG & RT. We should also bring in any FA center we can find.
November 21st, 2010 at 2:28 pm
Division is still there for the taking fellas.
Our defense shouldn’t have any problems with Miami at home next week. Beating SD the following week puts us right back in the mix!
November 21st, 2010 at 2:29 pm
I’m not entirely sold on Kolb… he has a lot of good young weapons that likely make him look a little better than he is… but if the Raiders can also upgrade their offensive line and bring in a big-time WR, it wouldn’t be a bad move.

As much as I loved Seymour’s shot to #7’s facemask, Getting ejected really hurt us. I realize he was just trying to motivate our D but getting thrown out didn’t help us at all. He’s my absolute favorite D player. I can only wish that the remainder of the D start playing with his level of meanness.

From the very begining they wanted to long to pull Campbell. 2nd where were the blitzes? Even though we are all not Offensive Coordinators the best way to slow the pass rush is screens and draws.
Film from Pitts previous game showed they were vunerable to deep comebacks…not one in this game.
Hey we are not going to win out, but just expected a much closer game then the one played today.
November 21st, 2010 at 2:36 pm
Wow.
Campbell will be the starter next week already Cable??
I guess Cable doesn’t want a fighting a chance at making the playoffs.
Grads has ball and gives this team a fighting chance when he is in there.
Campbell doesn’t bring it in a game in game out basis.
I would rather have a QB who is fiery and has balls and guts every single time he is out there.

Is this your idea Al?

SF has a doughnut in the 3rd qtr against Tampa Bay.
How is Troy Smith any better than what we already have?
He even has the great Craptree to throw to, and still nothing.
November 21st, 2010 at 2:38 pm
JB, I’m sure the playcalling was fine. When the top defense in the NFL is blitzing successfully, and their LB corps is fast enough to shut down short passes and screens, the results look ugly.
The Steelers have lost to the Saints, Ravens, and Patriots this year. They’re a Super Bowl talent. It’s ok to look bad against them.
November 21st, 2010 at 2:38 pm
Why is everyone bashing on the play calling? You do realize that you have to execute the plays that are called? You can’t just start diving into your playbook if Campbell throws a wide open screen to Ford and it lands halfway there. Or if Murphy forgets that in the NFL you need TWO feet to make a catch. A coach is severely limited when his players cannot run the simplest of plays. Campbell’s problem is between the ears. Bruce’s problem is his physical ability. I’ll take a man that steps up to pressure regardless of his physical ability than someone who crumbles under it.

Bruce threw a deep comeback on a scramble his first or second pass.

The Steelers…are way better…than the Raiders.
Thus, their playcalling LOOKS better because their players catch the tough passes, and run faster than our guys. And their defense is FASTER and STRONGER than our guys. It’s simple.

I agree it’s ridiculous after having two weeks to prepare, but they failed to execute the plays when they were open. You cannot just start calling great plays if you have no reason to believe that you can complete them. If it’s really the play calling then Campbell needs to be in the coaches ear telling him which plays he can complete. Unfortunately I don’t believe Campbell can talk.
November 21st, 2010 at 2:51 pm
Play calling = identifying the other team soft spots and exploiting them.
Play calling = recognizing defensive tactics and make adjustments.
How about DMac and Reece split out wide with Bush in the backfield?

Motion plays? The motion I remember is Khalif frickin Barnes, lol?

187, the reason the Patriots made it look easy is because they have a Hall of Fame QB and an All-Pro offensive line. We have one of the worst QBs in football and a subpar pass-blocking line.
November 21st, 2010 at 2:56 pm
Mike Wallace was the fastest, most explosive player on the field today.
The Steelers WRs consistently caught tough passes that Zach Miller and our WRs did not.
Their QB is much better than ours.
The Steelers LBs are much better than ours at blitzing and covering short passes.
Our punt return blocking does NOT exist.
And on and on…
November 21st, 2010 at 2:57 pm
JC isn’t dumb. You can’t get to the NFL as a QB and be stupid-you have to be intelligent. What makes the great ones great is their ability to recognize what is in front of them and then making snap decisions. That is where I believe JC is lacking.

Sanchez threw a perfect 40-yard bomb to help beat the Texans.
QBs are everything in this league.

Play calling = identifying the other team soft spots and exploiting them.
Play calling = recognizing defensive tactics and make adjustments.
How about DMac and Reece split out wide with Bush in the backfield?
Stacking one side?
Motion plays? The motion I remember is Khalif frickin Barnes, lol?
A reverse maybe?
Agreed the execution was just as bad if not worse.
^^^^^^^^
How about DMac and Reece split out wide with Bush in the backfield?….and then what? will the play work? Will Reece catch the ball? If we can’t complete a pass with our normal set why will we complete it now?
Stacking one side?….and then what? The offensive line still has to block.
A reverse maybe?….and then what? Will Ford fumble?
you don’t go deep into the play book to get into a rhythm. You get into a rhythm to go into the play book.

The Raiders got Chuck Norrised today.
November 21st, 2010 at 3:02 pm
Lefty, the coaching staff, and some of us, agree completely with you.
If JC had an all-pro O-line, and you gave him half the field to read, he’d be fine.
November 21st, 2010 at 3:02 pm
So what are our options as far as QB goes?
In the league:
Kolb
Fitzpatrick
Thipen
Josh Johnson
…
In the draft:
Ponder
Locker
Kaepernick
…
(I’m assuming Luck will be out of reach, barring a big-time trade)
Who am I missing? Any ideas?

Poor game planning. Veeeerrrry predictable. Miami will be a statement of the Raiders mettle. Starting campbell will be a mistake. Plain and simple. Anticipate my report later this evening. Need to go run up a mountain and flush this game away, get my composure back.
This game made me look stupid, like some kind of dumb ass thinking the Raiders could beat pittsburgh. All my family and friends are dumping on me, but I got big shoulders. Just tell them to go cornhole themselves. No problem. Just feel extremely stupid. But Cable has got to feel stupid and like a dumb ass too, It’s his job to have these guys ready, not mine, he’s the one paid to do that. WTF. Grade F everywhere, coaching and playcalling, execution, effort, all of it, ‘cept Seymour.
But I still like Cable, just don’t respect him right now. Might next week, but not now. No Marshall Law today. pittsburgh had to do what they had to do, and we let them do what they had to do. Enough of this horse sh1t. Will sum it all up tonight. Won’t be pretty.

I would sell my soul to Dick Cheney to see the Raiders somehow acquire both Larry Fitzgerald and Andrew Luck.
November 21st, 2010 at 3:10 pm
YA, the Bills finally found their franchise QB. No way Fitzpatrick is leaving Buffalo.
Al Davis traded a 4th rounder for Campbell. He’ll give him another season here at a minimum.
Our hopes are drafting a QB in the 3rd round (I think 2nd round has to be a Center or RT).
With Hue Jackson around, we can take a flyer on a raw QB prospect and try to get our own Fitzpatrick/McCoy late-round QB.
But we have to shore up that O-line first.
November 21st, 2010 at 3:16 pm
Ricky Stanzi of Iowa is a smart, good-enough-arm QB with better accuracy than Gradkowski. If Cable/Jackson are running the draft, he’s their kind of guy.
If Davis is running it, he can’t pass up the big arm and athleticism of FSU’s Christian Ponder or Nevada’s Colin Kaepernick.
If Davis wants to win next year and DOES give up on JC, then a trade for Kolb (assuming the Eagles keep Vick) is the only move that makes sense.
November 21st, 2010 at 3:16 pm
Campbell is definitely going to stick, there’s no question about that.
I think it puts the Raiders in a good position, actually. You have an average/below average QB who can win a few games here and there, another average/below average backup who is a bit more pocket mobile to spell him, and then you have a young guy developing behind both of them, learning the game from Hue and two guys with very different styles.
Agreed, though, if our top pick is a 2nd rounder, it needs to be a C.
November 21st, 2010 at 3:17 pm
Our Oline isn’t great but it is good enough to win in this league.A good QB would make a world of difference.
November 21st, 2010 at 3:17 pm
Fitzgerald will likely do the same as Boldin as far as looking for a team with an established QB. He won’t come to Oakland unless one of our QBs goes on a tear the final 6 games.

Lefty, I think the aging Walker (he’s about 33 by now) has to be replaced on the right side. Also, our C gets manhandled too often.
How our QBs and WRs finish this season will detail whether we have to use draft picks on those positions or not.

Which is why the Raiders would have to acquire a QB for that to even be a possibility. Fitz doesn’t want to be in a situation like the one he’s currently in, with some UDFA with a wild arm throwing to him.
November 21st, 2010 at 3:21 pm
I think Gaither is the best bet to compete for the RT spot, as long as he’s healthy. At his best, he’s a franchise-caliber player. He’s also versatile enough to play both tackle positions.

Said that Titans players have grown tired of VY rolling around on the ground and needing 3 minutes to get up, and than demand that he goes back in the game later.
Said no way he will be back next year if Fisher is still the coach.

Lance Moore might be available from New Orleans this off-season (RFA) due to the Saints’ depth at WR.
Great hands, sharp routes, winning tradition.

A QB upgrade to a Brees/Manning/Brady type would be nice, but that’s not realistic. Our game managers are as about as good as it’s going to get.
But we can upgrade our C, RG, and RT positions, and find a #1 and #2 WR.
Getting Nnamdi back healthy won’t hurt either.

Definitely, but I wouldn’t mind seeing the Raiders taking a late-round flier pick on a QB. You never know, he could very well be the next Tom Brady. You almost have as good of a shot in the late rounds of landing a franchise QB as you do drafting in the higher rounds.

November 21st, 2010 at 3:42 pm
I think our defensive play calling wasn’t aggressive enough. We needed to dial up more blitzes, especially with the Steelers having a banged up line. We did the exact opposite of what the Steelers did. They kept increasing the blitz, no matter what. We’re gonna have to implement more zone coverage. All of that man to man had the defense backs to the quarterback. Our D left the field too open when plays broke down.

Because the Raiders are a team that, while vastly improved over last year, could easily be 7-3 if they had a few more key pieces.
They’re still in the race, obviously, but they’re not going to go very far in the playoffs without consistent play from the QB, WRs, offensive line and secondary.

8-8 is very good for this season. Even better than I expected them to be. But the ultimate goal is to play February football, is it not? Is that not the point behind building a team?
That’s why many of us are talking off-season already. This team has made some very big strides this season, but as we saw today, there’s still a way to go if we’re to expect the Raiders to compete with the best in the league.

YA, you think they’d give up on two young guys like Moore and Clausen that quick? moore looked good enough last year when he had healthy RBs and a healthy Steve Smith. With the many holes they have, I think they trade that pick for someone who wants Luck.
November 21st, 2010 at 4:02 pm
YA-that is fine but there is still a lot of football to be played this year with the division still very much a possibility. What we need right now might not be what we need at the end of the year-except QB.It is possible we have the necessary replacements for the Oline on the roster-except maybe C.Our young WRs could become more dependable and Chaz could get and stay healthy.
November 21st, 2010 at 4:03 pm
Shoot, if Carolina does draft Luck, Oakland can offer a 5th rounder for either Moore or Clausen and take a chance on finding a gem. Kind of hard to evaluate those QBs on such a bad team, but that’s what scouts are for.

If the coaches are committed to Bruce Campbell being a RG, then the team still needs an RT. Especially considering how susceptible Walker has been to the pass rush.
I don’t think the safe money is on Chaz staying healthy. His health was a problem in his college career, too, so after three injury-plagued years in the pros it would be no small miracle for him to become durable now. If he can stay healthy through training camp there’s no harm in keeping him, but even with Murphy, Ford, and DHB the need for a consistent set of hands remains. The chances of DHB coming around before the end of the season is about the same chance there is of Campbell playing lights-out football for the remainder of the season.
I’d like to see them get to the playoffs, and I believe it can happen if they make it to 9-7. I’m just realistic about their chances against the AFC’s best teams – the Steelers, Pats, Colts, and Ravens.
November 21st, 2010 at 4:10 pm
I like Cable. He’s a very likeable guy. It’s cute the way he tries to fire up the team and all and act like he’s a real coach and all, but if you want to win in this league you need a REAL head coach that knows what he’s doing.
Pittsburgh is smart, confidant, and has talent. We just have some raw talent but are horribly out matched in game planning and knowing what it really takes to win in this league.
Raiders are undisciplined and badly prepared.
If we’re okay with being an undisciplined group of talented players then great; you’ve got yourself a team here, but if you wnat to truly get it to the playoff level then you need coaches who know how to get us there and mold a team of talented players.

A true #1 WR has to be the off-season priority. We just dont have anybody we can count on when it counts to consistently make plays at the WR position. DHB needs to pull a Roddy White/Dwayne Bowe career turnaround to justify his draft selection. Secondary upgrades should be OL, safety and CB. I am still in it for this season but it is looking like 8-8 for us.

Is Cable blind? The team moved with Gradkowski. Asking him to cover a 30+ point deficit in just a single quarter is ludicrous. Gradkowski is the man, regardless of Campbell does or doesn’t do. If Campbell remains our starter when Gradkowski is available our season is over.
November 22nd, 2010 at 11:09 am
I quarantee at the end of the year, someone from coaching staff will come out and say that Campbell had problems picking up offense. Al Davis would not let the coaches coach and allow Bruce to play. So the Raiders stuck with Campbell and ended up 6-10. I hope Im wrong or they change there minds but if Bruce doesn’t start we wont win eight games.
November 22nd, 2010 at 11:29 am
Everyone keeps saying that the Raiders play calling was horrible. How about the fact that Campbell cant play in a smart offence and has to have a basic offence ran for his abilities. Also without a running game, Campbell is useless. Put in the Bruce at the begining of the game and we would have won or made it close. Next week hopefully they put in Bruce when were down by 10 going into the 3rd quarter.
