Raiders must do it the hard way
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, November 22nd, 2010 at 8:49 pm in Oakland Raiders.
If the Raiders are to win the AFC West for the first time since 2002, they’ll do it with a tougher road than any of their division foes.
The Raiders have an advantage in that although they’re a game behind Kansas City in the division standings, they’re the only team in the division that can control its own destiny. If the Raiders win out, they own the title by virtue of already having a 3-0 record within the division that would expand to 6-0.
Of course, that’s the best-case scenario, and probably not the most likely one. Here’s how the Raiders schedule compares to that of their division foes, with San Diego having the easiest schedule based on the records of their opponents, with the Raiders having the toughest schedule:
SAN DIEGO (25-35)
at Indianapolis 6-4
Oakland 5-5
Kansas City 6-4
San Francisco 3-7
at Cincinnati 2-8
at Denver 3-7
KANSAS CITY (27-33)
at Seattle 5-5
Denver 3-7
at San Diego 5-5
at St. Louis 4-6
Tennessee 5-5
Oakland 5-5
DENVER (27-33)
St. Louis 4-6
at Kansas City 6-4
at Arizona 3-7
at Oakland 5-5
Houston 4-6
San Diego 5-5
OAKLAND (31-29)
Miami 5-5
at San Diego 5-5
at Jacksonville 6-4
Denver 3-7
Indianapolis 6-4
Kansas City 6-4

Vince Young is better than what we have now. If we had him we would avg 200 yds passing and 200 yds rushing.
Our WRs suck and can’t get open. Part of that is our O-Line doesn’t give QB time to allow receivers to get open.
Insert Young and he has the feet to evade the rush and buy time for WRs to get open and he can get the ball there. He will not easily accept getting sacked when the pass rush come barreling towards him.
Plus if it weren’t for VY we would be 6-4 right now. V Young likes football. He doesn’t like Fisher.

Jerry I’ll take it any way I can get it. Doesn’t mater who we have to play it matters how we play. If we come out firing we can win all 6 if we come out like we did vs Pitt we wont win many maybe 1. That team I saw yesterday wasn’t who we are, it’s who we will be if we dn’t play well.
I think we can play a whole lot better. For instance I thought that game screamed Michael Bush for 20+ carries and DMC on the perimeter. WE made it easy fr the Steelers to beat us. Murphy was a shell of himself and Ford was manhandled JLH IMO(Bauce says I’m wrong) was undisciplined and didn’t finish routes. Other than that we were Lombardi’s Green bay Packers.
November 22nd, 2010 at 8:57 pm
The only thing the Raiders threw yesterday was bombs, no?
Run Dmac up the middle and throw bombs. Sounds familiar. With Al Davis buying good press last week, I wonder if he capped the gameplan.
November 22nd, 2010 at 9:04 pm
I have San Diego losing 4 more. K.C. losing 3 more. We will win the next 4.
We will be 9-5 heading into the Indy game. San Diego will be 6-8. K.C. will be 7-7.
Raiders will be AFC West Champs before Indy game. Imagine that! Raiders vs Colts in week 16 with Raiders resting starters.

now to more important factors that I do have control over…
thankfully all of you were correct and Mr. seymour only got a $25,000 fine and did not get suspended.
We have six D-Lineman: 5 that can play DT (Seymour, Henderson,Kelly, Bryant, and Houston) 4 that can play DE (Houston, Shaughnessy, Seymour, and Kelly)
so 4-3 3-4 Miami is going down; they have only given up 19 sacks all year, Raiders must sack Miami at least 3 times in the 1st half.
November 22nd, 2010 at 9:51 pm
A stud receiver, someone we can anoint the number 81 to an know he will prove worthy.
Also the QB needs to be addressed, I would like to see better at that position. Unfortunately the number of rook starting QB’s that workout in the NFL are slim, especially later round picks.

I really think that he’ll be a servicable MLB for the Raiders but never anything special. Kind of a Greg Biekert kind of guy at best. I don’t think he’s bad, just nothing special.

Raiders simply need to go all out vs. San Diego in two weeks (they play Indy next Sunday), which means we could all but mathmatically eliminate the Chargers as they would be 5-7 and us at 7-5 and we have a two game sweep and guaranteed the best divisional record should there be a 3-way tie atop the AFC West.
We just need to stay within a game of KC going into final week, if we are 1 game up going into final week we clinch by virtue of divisional record.

Jacoby Ford has had one good game in his career. The NFL will figure players tendencies out fast. Players that last in this league have to continue to change, adapt and get better at their game. Look at Troy Smith with the Whiners. Two weeks ago he looked like he had a future. Then the league figured him out. Now, he has a future selling insurance. It is waaaaay too early to anoint Ford as a #1, and throw Murphy and DHB in the trash bin.
November 22nd, 2010 at 10:28 pm
Murphy is still playing like a rookie, it seems he is always either dropping the football, having only one foot in bounds, fumbling, and/or gets caught from behind.
For Murphy, when breaks do not go his way, he pouts like Freddie Garcia (the former Mariners pitcher) to the refs or the coaching staff on the sidelines.
The biggest difference between Ford and Murphy, when Ford dropped a pass in the beginning of the KC game, he stepped up, made unbelievable catches in clutch situations even.

#21 has 2 career sacks. 11 career INT’s. 1 career TD.
8 of his INT’s came in 2006 the other 3 are spread out in 7 years.
That is the best CB in the NFL? Its pathetic if you ask me.

I do not know if it would get him a flag or a fine, but I think it would be hilarious if Hochuli reffed a Browns’ game this year, and when Ed announced one of the penalties… Hillis walks up behind him and poses his biceps… the woman would love it anyway.
November 22nd, 2010 at 10:55 pm
The only QB that throws his way is Rivers, he gets maybe 4 a game thrown his way.
The one part of his game that Nnamdi does not have is to give enough distance from the reciever to bait the QB into throwing his way.
and as far as sacks are concerned the Raiders are one of the least blitzing teams in the NFL.
November 22nd, 2010 at 10:56 pm
#21 should give AL back 1/3 of his salary and restructure a long term deal that would have him moving to safety for less money. Those stats are atrocious! AL is being VERY generous tagging him I say let him walk if he wont take less $

On the bright side having Henderson helped. Losing Scott hurt. Goethel was a massive liability in coverage. Granted it was his frist ever NFL action but still. Doesn’t bode well for the hear out unless Thomas Howard gets promoted back to starter and they move away from the hybrid thing a little.

We have six D-Lineman: 5 that can play DT (Seymour, Henderson,Kelly, Bryant, and Houston) 4 that can play DE (Houston, Shaughnessy, Seymour, and Kelly)
So 4-3 3-4 Miami is going
down.
*********************
Good observation. Our D linemen have flexibility. We should be mixing up 3-4 & 4-3 lineups on an as-working basis. If the opponents can’t tell the formation based on personnel they’ll find it difficult to call the best plays. Play alignment on our part should be situated for the best mismatches favoring us.
AD should pay Seymour’s fine as a way of saying thanks for bring back old school Raider attitude & traditions.

111. After the year Revis has had Nnamdi’s clearly the best. Have to take into account the fact Nnadi never held his team hostage, sat out so long he pulled a hammy soon after returning and took away from the teams focus.
Revis is the best all around but rather have Nnamdi anyday…
November 22nd, 2010 at 11:40 pm
116. We do mix it up on D.
Didn’t so much against KC and Steelers and not sure how much we’ll do it with LB/DE hybrid Scott out of the line up.
We do have a 3-4 “look” we go into. Used to use it more in red zone when Rob Ryan was here.
John Marshall called it last year more. Its a psycho package type 3-4 overload and has worked very well in the past.

BHP,
Your comment at post 5 is exactly correct! Which begs the question, why is Tom Cable still the head coach! The win over the Rams was a disparate Tom Cable doing whatever he had to to save his job. The big wins over K.C., Denver and S.D. were “emotional” wins led by Richard Seymour. You cannot say those games were won on “coaching”, in fact one could argue that they were won in spite of coaching. I have been to all the home games and have awesome memories but now d.t. ill-prepared losses to S.F. Arizona we are in a position that we must win 5 out of 6 to win this division. Is there ANY chance that will happen? Not without a smart head coach!
Richard Seymour was accused of not being a vocal leader in the early part of the season. With the last few wins he has become more vocal with each win to the point I heard him announce to his troops in the post game locker room following a victory, “IF WE KEEP PLAYING LIKE THIS, CAN’T NOBODY BEAT US!”
But when Seymour lost his poise, after Roth-the-Date-Raper said something to him, provoking Seymour to pimp slap date-rape-burger; Well, that may have been the slap heard around the nation that ended this years run.
I credit Seymour for these wins more than Cable because he sparked the defense by his consistent full throttle play, followed by vociferously challenging his defense to play to win – which they did.
I will be there Sunday to watch a very good defense Miami try to snuff out any hope of the Raiders winning the AFC west this year. The question remains, will Seymour be able to continue to rally his defense or will he tone down his rhetoric because of the subliminal, psychological fallout from his loss of composure on Sunday?
November 23rd, 2010 at 12:14 am
Looking at the schedule above I would be happy with 3 more wins.
Miami, Denver, & KC
If they sneak 1 more against the rest (SD, Jags, Colts), that would give the Raiders their first winning season in 8 years.
Even if they miss the playoffs, 8-8 or 9-7 would be a huge victory for this franchise and coaching staff.
GO RAIDERS!!!!
November 23rd, 2010 at 12:18 am
oh yeah, if they go 9-7 and miss the Division by a game or 2, then we can sit and talk about the missed FG in Arizona and a blown chance against the 49ers.

If you look at int’s and TD’s and stats in this system that Nnamdi plays. It’s not his #’s that are pathetic it’s your lack of understandng our system that is pathetic. You’ve been watching our system how long and you still don’t get it?
It’s very hard o get stats playing the kind of cover corner Nnamdi plays. a. he rarely seees the ball b. once they try to throw at him they give up c. He probably gets 2 chances per game to put up any stats. In order for nnamdi to get stats he wuld have to cheat off his man and take a chance picking off a ball thrown to someone else’s man which even that is limited because it’s normally on the other side of the field. He has to get extremely lucky in our system to get a pick. he has to bate the QB and then take the ball away. Soemthing Deoin Sanders had to do. Even Mike Haynes rarely had a chance to get a pick he had to peel of his man onto a ball intended for someone else’s man to get a pick. Now if they design a defense that allows him to roam more it would help but they still don’t throw at him.
There’s really not a lot he can do other than what he’s doing it’s his own fault he just too damn good.

The NFL WANTS the Raiders to be good. They realize that a competitive and relevant Raider team is GOOD for the league. They finally figured it out. The NFL NEEDS the Raiders.
………………
Not true. If the NFL wants the Raiders to be good, the Raiders don’t go 7 straight years losing.
The NFL has become a homogenized machine, and Al’s style of management is a threat to it. They’d love nothing more than for Al to lose year after year, as an example for other owners thinking of going all rogue and maverick.
Al lost the war. He’s basically a POW anymore, who the winning army allows to walk around and pretend he’s one of them.

- The O-line was absolutely terrible, no QB would have been successful playing behind that line.
- As for the #21 conversation………since when has evaluating cornerback play been reduced to how many interceptions a CB gets.
- QBs throw at Revis all day long over 100 times a season, Nnamdi is lucky to see 25 throws his way in a season.
- The two most respected/best corners in the NFL are Nnamdi and Champ. I’ll put the attempts in those guys direction up against Revis’s all day everyday. Combine them even and they’ll still be less attempts to them put together than to Revis.

Some good discussion last night on the state of the Raiders WR’s. It’s clear we dont have the right guys now at the position, and our WR coach is a joke that would never be allowed near another NFL team.
Our leader coming into the season was Louis Murphy. For all his playmaking skills he showed in preseason and through the first few games, he has looked shellshocked coming off multiple dings and bruises to of all things his lungs…never heard of a bruised lung before…
But the point is Murphy is not running crisp routes, not putting himself in position to execute, unaware of the sidelines, and has alligator arms. It looks to me that Murphy is nowhere near mentally where he was at the start of the season when he would talk about improving on his rookie year.
Last year, he produced solid numbers despite having to play with JaMarcus. It seemed a given that if he could get over some of the drops he had that most of us thought were just rookie nerves, he’d elevate himself to maybe a 1000 yard receiver.
DHB is another that got a ton of good press pieces this offseason. He looked like he had turned the corner. But when he isn’t hurt with some of his “mystery illnesses”, he is scissor kick catching a ball with his hips that he should just naturally reach out and grab. Maybe he needs a pair of glasses as his depth perception is off kilter. Or maybe he just has no eye-hand coordination. He has had a couple of good games, so that will always buy him some time. But I am not expecting much from DHB anytime soon.
Jacoby Ford had a nice game a couple of weeks ago, but he is just a rookie, and it’s a bit rich to think he can be a #1 type WR. His routes are just not there yet.
C. Schilens is an afterthought who is dragging down the roster occupying a cold roster spot.

Thats because Revis has a VERY good corner opposite him. You cant pick on Cromartie all day because he will make you pay.
Just not the case in Oakland. If we elevated the play of the rest of our secondary Nnamdi would see 100 balls too, but why throw to him just to say you did it?

“The Raiders have an advantage in that although they’re a game behind Kansas City in the division standings, they’re the only team in the division that can control its own destiny.”

Fins banged up
DAVIE — The Miami Dolphins returned to the practice field Monday morning, but they were without the services of three key starters, at least during the portion of practice open to the media.
Leading receiver Brandon Marshall, coming off a hamstring injury that knocked him out for the second half of the Bears loss on Thursday, was not at practice during the open portion. Marshall told WQAM’s Michael Irvin on Friday that he would do everything in his power to get back to the field as soon as possible, but it’s unclear if Marshall will be able to play against his old AFC West foes at Oakland on Sunday.
In addition, inside linebacker and defensive co-captain Karlos Dansby joined starting center Joe Berger (knee) on the exercise bikes. Dansby was listed on the injury report last week with an elbow issue, but it’s unclear if that’s what kept him on the side Monday. Tim Dobbins took Dansby’s place alongside Channing Crowder at ILB.
While Tyler Thigpen continued to work with the first-team offensive line — with Richie Incognito at center and Pat McQuistan at left guard — Chad Henne took his share of reps as well. Henne had a huge brace on his sprained left knee, but his arm appeared fine and he seemed able to make all the throws.
Mobility, obviously, will be a huge issue as the team determines whether Henne can return to the field in six days at Oakland. For now, Henne appeared to be experimenting with backpedaling on his three-step drops rather than turning away from the defense.
Whether this was knee-related or purely a mechanical adjustment isn’t known yet, but I’m guessing it’s the former.
Also, former starting DE Phillip Merling returned to practice for the first time since tearing his left Achilles’ tendon in July. Merling, currently on the reserve/non-football injury list, has another eight days on his practice window before the Dolphins must determine whether to add him to the 53-man roster.
Offensive lineman Cory Procter, who made his first Dolphins start at center on Thursday, was not at Monday’s practice. He has been placed on injured reserve with a torn ACL in his left knee, although the team has not announced it yet.
His replacement was on the scene — wearing No. 73 — ex- Colts LT Tony Ugoh. Ugoh, who can also play some guard, worked out for the Dolphins over the weekend, along with ex-Bengals LT Levi Jones, and I can assure you that wasn’t Jones out there.

Misdirection, PA, move the pocket, screens, screens, screens.
Intermediate routes, Chaz Schilens, and Bruce Grad.

we’re 3-0 in the AFC West.
It’ll be interesting to see which teams we sweep!
we are not going 0-3 to split each series at 1-1.
I would love to say Sandy Eggo, but living so close to KC and surrounded by thier fans (some I’m friends with) it would be hilarious to knock them out of the playoffs!

I dont think our gameplan was “mentally challenged” on Sunday. They knew our OLine could not contain them and they attacked us in the backfield. I dont think you ever SAW our gameplan on Sunday.

Other than the “carry and conceal” that was what school was like for me over here.We are going back over 30 years though.

Just read Cable’s Q&A. Bothered me a little bit that Cable thought no matter the scheme Pitt would have beat us anyway. Its like saying why bother trying, it was over before it begun. Its the Tommy Kelly mentality.
November 23rd, 2010 at 7:39 am
If Cable thought we had lost before the game started he should be sitting next to Childress on the park bench.
November 23rd, 2010 at 7:40 am
At the end of the day, we didnt follow the blue print that was laid out for us by NO, NE and even Cincy. We didnt get after them in the backfield, we didnt keep them out of our backfield, and with the exception of the very first drive our QB play totally stunk. It really couldnt have gotten much worse for us.
November 23rd, 2010 at 7:42 am
I dont see where you think that Cable said we lost before we got off the bus? I just didnt get that impression. Im pretty sure Cable realizes that we just got our a$$es whipped. I would be more worried if he wouldnt admit the obvious.
November 23rd, 2010 at 7:44 am
I think we could have played a hell of a lot better if we’d just prepared the right way. Playing into their strenghts is stupid. Pitt is a much more talented team than Oak, just look at the superbowls & the win loss records. Last year we beat them by going unconventional. cable doesn’t see that.

That’s why Hue has to stay creative.
He was way too vanilla on Sunday.
They had two weeks to prepare for this game. Reece/Bush/DMC/TEs needed to get more involved since the QBs were getting manhandled.
Move the pocket. Get some drag routes, some crossing routes, little smoke routes, something. They were leaving the middle of the field wide open.
I’ve seen this before and the Raiders are just not willing to adjust and dink and dunk it a bit. Why is everyone acting like they are allergic to ball control?

- As for the #21 conversation………since when has evaluating cornerback play been reduced to how many interceptions a CB gets.
- QBs throw at Revis all day long over 100 times a season, Nnamdi is lucky to see 25 throws his way in a season.
- The two most respected/best corners in the NFL are Nnamdi and Champ. I’ll put the attempts in those guys direction up against Revis’s all day everyday. Combine them even and they’ll still be less attempts to them put together than to Revis.
***************************
Thats because Revis has a VERY good corner opposite him. You cant pick on Cromartie all day because he will make you pay.
Just not the case in Oakland. If we elevated the play of the rest of our secondary Nnamdi would see 100 balls too, but why throw to him just to say you did it?
****************************
- Granted, this year Revis does have a very good corner on the other side.
- This wasn’t the case last year, Revis had an average corner on the other side and QBs still threw in excess of 100 balls his way.

I like the idea of having DHB, or charles schallens in the game however, I did notice that Ford was doubled and tripled in some cases. Hue needs to draw up some intermediate stuff to attack the blitz…the youngsters also need to know to break off patterns when they read a blitz is coming…Not just on the QB its on the WR’s, and they have been taught this for sure in college…

I can see both sides having valid points.
But Podunk used to be a safe place, but nowadays, with Meth factories popping up in rural areas, that isn’t true anymore.
I don’t blame Podunkians for being locked/loaded and concealed. Lot of wackos out there. And you cannot rely on the Sherriff deputies that take sometimes till the next shift to get to you.
That is the scary part of Podunk.

The Jets also had one of them most dominant Run Defenses last year, and blitzed so much the QBs didnt have time to make their reads. You simply cant avoid Revis like you can with Nnamdi.
November 23rd, 2010 at 8:20 am
Not trying to intentionally bash poor JC, but we will continue to see stacked box defense until he can get his motor skills up to speed and release the ball to the hot read.
Other teams would be foolish not to test JC, as he has consistently frozen when forced to make the quick read/pass.
November 23rd, 2010 at 8:22 am
I just don’t know how much Hue can do with JLH and Murphy. Will JLH finish his route? Will Murphy hold on to the ball?
Ford looks like a player, but there is only so much a smurf can do.
Get well Charles!!!!!
November 23rd, 2010 at 8:26 am

——————————————————-
It’s really our Oline that is getting tested. Pitts sent 5 guys and there was always someone running free at both QBs. 2 guys blocking a DT when the LB is running right past them unblocked is more of an indictment of the the Oline than the QB. If the Oline picks up the correct guys, I don’t think it will be an issue.
November 23rd, 2010 at 8:29 am

So JC is pretty decent when he has time and a developed pocket. But what NFL QB isn’t?
You watch last Sunday Night Game Giants vs Eagles, you will see Vick get an all out blitz, and the slow motion replay is amazing. He finds the hot read and gets a 9 yard gain. The defense never tried that all out blitz again.
Sometimes a QB needs to elevate his play to compliment the O-line. It cant all be on the O-line.

I still don’t understand why Hue is so opposed to this. I wonder if it’s some osrt of Al Davis-impose philosophy to go deep all the time, but all the great Raider teams at least had intermediate routes and great pass-catching tight ends.

Game’s over and done with. Time to move on. Miami up next. 6 game season at 5-5 in control of our destiny, already with a 3-0 division record.
We could:
A) go 4-2 or better and march right into the postseason
B) go 3-3 and be mediocre, maybe get lucky and squeak in
C) go 2-4 or worse and let that Steeler game define us as quitters
This is the crossroads. There is no more margin of error and they know it. The coaches know it and it’s time to go all out and really cut it loose.

great observation, they are also responsible. but it is as you say all leading back to the coaching. they have to know what they can and cannot do against certain defenses and matchups. if they know they are playing against a stacked deck, be willing to change. they apparently are stuck in their gameplan.

Campbell sucks, there’s no more excuses. Better QBs have succeeded woth worse O Lines.
QB, C, RG, RT will need to be addressed by either elevavating a backup, FA, or draft.
WR must be addressed. Murphy/DHB were thrown to the wolves last year and Murphy is going backwards, whereas DHB has been bumped up to ‘crappy’ from ‘God awful.’
November 23rd, 2010 at 8:44 am
Campbell never won me over through that 3 game win streak. Won despite him. That game against San Fran pushed me over the edge. If he’s the starter, I will root for him to do well.
Enough of Grads to see that he’s not the answer either.
Well isn’t that nice. But there are enough pieces on this team to compete for the playoffs if we are healthy going forward.
November 23rd, 2010 at 8:45 am

Exactly. Cable has never been good at halftime adjustments. Hue is following his lead.
SnB mentioned these guys are motivational rather than Xs and Os guys, and I agree with that for the most part.
I however do believe the O line is actually better than we think, especially in the run game and play action. There should have been a lot more misdirection in that game.
Reece was not utilized enough. If they shut McFadden down in singleback formations, go to I form. Or get him in the slot or get him on a screen, get him involved.
The ineptitude of the coaching staff is sickening.
They can motivate and encourage and bond, which is something the team sorely needed, but at the end of the day, they need people who are going to outsmart the guys on the other sidelines and they just don’t do that here.

Believing that this raider team is going to sweep two division opponents, is folly. Just as erroneous as the belief we were a super bowl contender on par with the steelers.
The offensive line and the receivers are the weakest posistions on the field, this was clear on sunday as it has been since the preseason. Our receivers have been below average, our o-line has been brutal.
Our receivers have had 4 guys with break out games, 2 receivers, ford, and DHB. Along with a tight end ( z.miller ) and a full back ( Reece) . These four guys exploded, each on a different week. Each of the 4 have failed to come close to duplicating those stand out performances. The inconsistent bunch is struggling, but they are better when healthy. So far this year our top 3 projected starters have not played a single down together. This is really bad news for team that wants to go 3 wide pump and go, and send guys down the field. Can the receiving core get healthy and put together a few more big games to build toward next year? No panic this youthful group still has time on their side.
The o-line is a completely different story. I love veldheer at tackle. B Campbell flahsed once or twice in preseason, he is a project but at where he was drafted it makes perfect since to take your time with him. Gallery has become a good guard when healthy, he works really well with veldheer. From the center down the right side our guys look like circus clowns on ice skates. Our line has been serviceable in some games run blocking, but the pass blocking is hideous. not only do teams run around our tackles spinning them like ballerinas, but they also blast right through our center and guard. Next year these 3 positions must be upgraded with out fail, and who ever the head coach is will be measured by what he does for this group.

Not sure how our O-line could be worse than our QB’s.
The O-line has paved the way for a top 3 rushing attack.
Meanwhile Jason Campbell and Bruce Gradkowski combined are only better than the Cardinals and Panthers crap of QB’s, and some 41 year old grey-haired guy.
Campbell has the 2nd lowest completion % of any QB with enough attempts to qualify.
QB is our biggest liablility, followed by WR’s, than maybe coaching, than maybe our Safeties, than our O-line.

Hue barely gets a passing grade in my book.
It’s seems are all our best drives and creativity, even going back to the preseason, were done in pre-scripted plays on the first drive.

Remember Cable’s game plans from last year? Run McFadden down the middle 15 times. By halftime we were 28-0 down, had produced 6 3&outs. For the second half he would change the gameplan completely: Run Bush down the middle 15 times!

UH OH. JFB seems to not like Grads anymore.
******************************
I still think he is our best QB, and like what he brings to the table as far as intangibles.
But we are talking about him being better than Jamarcus Russell (out of the league) and Jason Campbell (soon to be out of the league a la Aaron Brooks) than it isn’t really saying much.

I know they don’t listen to us, but I hope they switch JaJason out for Grads. It will be a morale-shot this team needs.
JaJason is no leader, and we desparately need one.

Just for a little humor, the NFL can’t prove it was Farve’s D*CK in the pictures.
“Naked photos that reportedly have been sent from Favre’s phone to Sterger’s phone via text message may never be conclusively traced to Favre, who has denied sending the pictures. The photos are the most damaging evidence that has come to light. The problem is that the pictures evidently were copied and re-sent electronically so many times that it’s hard to know if they have been altered along the way, a league source said.”
November 23rd, 2010 at 10:04 am
Pittsburgh hasn’t had a good O-line in years.
Always at the bottom in ypc, sacks allowed, and the year they won the Super Bowl they were the worst team in the NFL converting 3rd-4th and 1’s.
They are hot garbage from time to time, but Ben (just like any elite QB) can mask the stench of a bad O-line quite easily.
November 23rd, 2010 at 10:05 am
Sanjaya Lal has really worked up the WRs this year. He used all of his american idol experience to give the WRs the ins&outs of massaging Paula Abdul!

==========================================================
Run blocking and pass blocking are not the same. We have had some decent run blocking, but we have Dmac who is clearly a top runner in the nfl. He compensates, masks and tends to skew the o-lines performance. Dmac is a great runner that often makes the first guy miss, and or runs through the first contact. he is being hit in the back filed way to often, but because he is so good he turns them into positive gains. the o-line is supposed to get him to the second level of the defense, and has only been ok doing this, and have struggled at against middle of the pack run defenses. they are horrible in pass protection this is why our qbs are running for their lives and have struggled with health.
When your o-line struggles, your qb, receivers and running backs will struggle as well. Our pass protection is one of the bottom five in the league. this is the main reason both qbs have struggled.
Actually both qbs have had to make big plays for us to win, on the run overcoming the comical o-line play. Both qbs have contributed and raised our team from bottom feeder to 500 mediocrity. I wonder what they would look like if they were able to sit in an nfl pocket and actually run the offense.
November 23rd, 2010 at 10:11 am
Big Ben should not have had that success throwing the ball. Ward was hardly a factor, and only Mike Wallace as a credible receiving threat and he sliced our secondary like he was Peyton Manning.
Bad O-line, good QB, not great but good, and avg receivers shouldn’t have produced those results. Our D-Line should have manhandled that crap O-Line of theirs.
Still puzzled.

Oakland is laying three points this weekend.
They always say that home field is worth 3 points, so basically Vegas feels that these two teams are a wash.
Was trying to think of games where our QB outplayed the opponents this year?
Certainly Denver and Seattle, maybe AZ but that’s about it. Guys like VY and Alex Smith looked light years better than our’s, and their careers are on extremely shaky ground at this stage.
Along with Sanjay, guys like Hackett and Tolner (who I guess our “passing co-ordinators” are) should be under the microscope as well.
Has any Raider QB gotten better under these guys? Jamarcus got worse, Campbell was never that good in the first place but he is on his way to his worst statistical year, Bruce has regressed.

Amazing that some of you hang this loss on JCamp alone!
Hue Jackson & John Marshall got outcoached, plain & simple. Tom Cable didn’t have this team fired up or hungry either. for 3 weeks there we played aggressive and angry. I think Seymour (before ejection) Kelly, Henderson, ShoNasty, Houston & Huff did well enough on D. Mike Bush & JLH are the only ones who “wanted it” on offense imo

Dont be. Our defense lost the two leaders. Not only did you lose high caliber talent and experience, but you lost depth and too many young guys played too many snaps in our secondary. Brown and Ware may both become solid pros, but they weren’t ready for that emergency work load. I cant believe the game plan was to have henderson play as many snaps as he did either. Then we lost scott, we were simply out gunned and undermanned.

Do you remember the Vick was arrested and then Bill Parcells chose Miami over Atlanta making it look like Atlanta was going to be bottom dwellers for the next 5 years.
Instead a well ran front office hired the right GM Coach and staff. Then they drafted well (Matt Ryan) and then through Free Agency they got their RB.
The next year they went 11-5 surprising everyone.
The point to this post is that it took a great front office and a really good coaching staff to put together these pieces to make them successful.

————-
Or for that matter, any coach who could come in and work with a GM on implementing HIS SYSTEM and drafting players that fit that system.
Credit to Cable, because what’s he’s essentially been doing is learning how to coach for Al Davis football on the fly. He’s finally starting to learn how to win some games here and there the Al Davis way, or at least close enough to the Al Davis way that Al won’t freak out. That in and of itself is impressive.
I’m not saying that it’s impossible to win the Al Davis way. But it’s a dangerous strategy drafting players because you think they can win every one-on-one matchup, because quite simply there aren’t a whole lot of players out there who can do that consistently. It’s more of a vague notion than a strategy, and it’s hard to quantify pre-draft.
It’s much easier for coaches who have a scheme that relies on the team playing together to serve a specific purpose. This is why the Steelers, Patriots, and Ravens are consistently successful.

Pays Vick more in the short-term with the tag, but they don’t have to give him a ton of years, being the last time a team did that he spent his finacial security on a dog-fighting operation.

Very good receivers, and they are actually pass protecting with some moderate success. I would bet money that the score this week when they play Pitt will be quite similar to ours though.

Two strategies for finding a QB in the offseason:
One, find a guy in the third round or later. He’ll be developmental, but could potentially help by late next season (a la Colt McCoy). But for this to pan out, the 2nd rounder needs to be C/G, and the RT and WR spots need to be upgraded as well.
Two, trade Nnamdi for either a draft pick high enough to take Ryan Mallett, Andrew Luck, etc., or for a guy already in the league like Kevin Kolb (getting a second round draft pick along with him). In which case you’d have to draft a CB in the 2nd or 3rd round. In this case, o-line and WR still need an upgrade.
November 23rd, 2010 at 11:12 am
Rate Comp Att % Yds Yd/PG avg. TD INT
82.1 240 394 60.9 2625 262.5 6.7 18 13
75.8 104 190 54.7 1322 165.3 7.0 7 6
I know stats aren’t everything and Palmer has thrown away at least one game, but tell me this isn’t an upgrade over what we have now.
I wish we could get The Guy, but how? Campbell was obviously a stop gap after not being able to get Vick, Kolb, Ben, or McNabb.
I think we could at least get a better stop gap.
Or have coaches that play to the strengths of the team and minimize weaknesses.
I think this is a winning team that should have beat the Steelers.
November 23rd, 2010 at 11:13 am
It’s nice to see Lee Evans finally having some personal success in Buffalo. That guy is one of the hardest working guys in the league, and has played the good soldier on many a terrible Buffalo team.

Lee Evans, Stevie Johnson?
I don’t remember those guys being “very good”. Evans had a good rookie year but has fallen off. Also, their RB is doing well. So its the line play as well.
I think that OC will be looked at for HC jobs.
November 23rd, 2010 at 11:14 am
I think as a stopgap guy, Campbell and Grads are about as good as it’s going to get for Oakland. McNabb might have been a better choice, but even he’s not seeing a whole lot of success in Washington.

You see the big impact a good QB has on a team.
Couple years back Kurt Warner got the most out his elite WR’s and they went to the SB.
This year, Anquon saw the writing on the wall and got out of dodge. Bet Fitzgerald wishes he could leave too.
Can’t overstate the difference of a good or Franchise QB. The difference from competing and winning.
November 23rd, 2010 at 11:21 am
We need to address C and WR as a priority in FA. Which ever one of those positions we don’t get needs to be our 2nd rd pick.
November 23rd, 2010 at 11:23 am
Now, for the Miami game,
Simple Raiders run the football and stop the run, they win.
Miami is a lot like us, statistical wise in terms of yards, sacks, turnovers.
We average about a touchdown more than the Dolphins, they do have a Brandon Marshall though, but we have a better secondary, especially with Nnamdi,
we both run a two-headed monster backfield,
both kickers lead the league in FGs janikowski and Carpenter
whaddayaknow, it will come down to the offensive and defensive lines again, go figure
November 23rd, 2010 at 11:29 am
As far as Philly’s Vick or Kolb,
The Eagles will not hesitate to pull the trigger on a trade for either one, if they like the offer, they know they have a solid #1 starter in both.
This years draft will have a lot of good QBs: Luck, Locker, Newton, Stanzi, Moore and others, at least one will be available for the Raiders in the 2nd or 3rd round.
I’m hoping there will be an impact offensive lineman when we have our first draft pick, but this is all for next year.
Raiders are in control this year for the AFC West Crown.

me neither, but CJ37 isn’t as bad as you think he is!
I’ve seen quite a few negative McClain comments since Week 1 that didn’t come from yours truly. Is it a coaching issue? chalk it up to being a rookie?
ShoNasty, Kelly, Seymour, Houston, Wimbley & Groves are doing their part to stuff the run. I’ve even seen Bryant, Scott, Howard & Brown make a few plays. We knew my man John Henderson would do his job (when healthy)
I’m not going to blame his supporting cast. It’s light years better than anything Kirk Morrison had!

the Raiders should trade Nnamdi Asomugha for Kevin Kolb and the Eagles 1st rounder.
Kolb & JCamp will battle for the starter gig and Kolb will probably win, but with this shaky O-Line you need at least 2 QB’s. Gradkowski wants to start and he’ll be an unrestricted free agent. Boller or Frye are good enough to compete for the 3rd stringer job
November 23rd, 2010 at 11:47 am
McClain has been asked to play a lot of pass coverage. He’s not out there shooting gaps really. Pressure’s coming from the D Line and maybe OLB for the most part.

I seriously doubt Nnamdi is worth more than a 2nd rounder unless the NFL bigwigs negotiate a new salary cap that makes him less toxic. He may be only worth a 3rd. Not that he is actually worth so little, but his price tag will drive off a bidding war.

Nnamdis value is inflated solely because his surrounding cast pretty much blows most of the time. Nnamdi has been tested many a time, and he’s been beat many a time.
November 23rd, 2010 at 11:51 am
For the most part, Ro Mac has improved in getting personnel lined up and Qbing the D. He’s got a ways to go, and it’s true he has more talent to work with, but for a rookie, I am encouraged to see if he can grow into his role.
It’s like when you buy a puppy with big feet and you can see he’s gonna be end up being a big dog.
November 23rd, 2010 at 11:52 am
If Nnamdi is going to be traded, it shouldn’t be for anything less than a starting-caliber WR or QB and either a 2nd or 3rd round pick. Anything less than that is simply not worthwhile for the Raiders.
November 23rd, 2010 at 11:53 am

the Eagles will be competing for a Super Bowl next year. You don’t think they’d want the top shutdown corner in the league? They will make the playoffs this year so the 1st rounder wont be Top 20 and they have extra picks from the Donovan McNabb trade to move back up and grab the player they want. They can always rework Nnamdi’s deal after the fact, like Randy Moss did for New England after we shipped him out for a 4th rounder
win/win for both teams imo

Did you see what happened to Kolb with that O-Line in Philly. He may never be the same again, and having him behind this line would surley get him involuntarily manslaughtered. I say get after a mobile qb until we fix the line to pass protect.
November 23rd, 2010 at 11:54 am
I’d take Kolb and a 2nd rounder for Nnamdi, but only if the offensive line and WRs are also upgraded.
Two second rounders could net the Raiders a CB to replace Nnamdi and a WR or C.
I still think Michael Floyd will slip to the second round.
November 23rd, 2010 at 11:55 am
Fitzgerald for Nnamdi, straight-up?
November 23rd, 2010 at 11:55 am
People are overvaluing a 30 year old CB making $16M/year. Market value is what Al thinks is value since he says his franchise tag for Seymour. But that is the only value. He is essentially tagging both Seymour and Nnamdi. Other GM’s wouldn’t do this.
November 23rd, 2010 at 11:58 am
I’m still not entirely sold on Kolb, but he’s an upgrade over what the Raiders have now. I would still rather see a QB come in through the draft.

LOL.
There will be several really solid college QBs available in later rounds in 2011. Just not sure if they will pan out to be good NFL QBs.
Only Luck is NFL-ready, IMO.
I do like Mallet if he can stay consistent and learn to read the field better, but I want a cerebral QB right outta the gate personally.
Since drafting JaMarshmallow Truffle, we missed out on Matty Ice and Sam Bradford. Obviously, they were drafted a bit ahead of us, but just his presence on the team made a trade up unlikely.

Cleveland Browns have Colt, will travel
Dallas Cowboys have a QB
Denver Broncos have a QB
Minnesota Vikings need a QB
San Francisco 49ers need a QB
Buffalo Bills looks like they found one
Cincinnati Bengals might need one
Detroit Lions have a QB
Carolina Panthers drafted one, but wouldn’t put it past them to get another
The good news is, several of these teams may jettison decent QBs that we could get like a Troy Smith or Carson Palmer.

Hemorrhoids (US English) or haemorrhoids (Commonwealth English), are normal vascular structures in the anal canal which help with stool control.[1][2] They become pathological or known as piles[3] when swollen or inflamed. In their physiological state they act as cushions composed of arterio-venous channels and connective tissue that aid the passage of stool. The symptoms of pathological hemorrhoids depend on the type present. Internal hemorrhoids usually present with painless rectal bleeding while external hemorrhoids present with pain in the area of the anus.
Recommended treatment consists of increasing fiber intake, oral fluids to maintain hydration, NSAID analgesics, sitz baths, and rest. Surgery is reserved for those who fail to improve following these measures.

Agreed. This was the o-line and Hue Jackson’s fault. That whole, “Can’t run on Pittsburgh” deal is bull crap!
You see that Bush had a 24 yard run on that Pitt defense. Hue Jackson ran no misdirection, or creative runs for DMAC on the outside. Everything was basically straight up the middle. Bland and vanilla. And the o-line was opening NO holes for DMAC to run through.
Pittsburgh was running reverses, misdirections, the whole 9 yards.
We got out coached on both sides of the ball, bottom line.

I think Al wanted us to get to Ben with 4 man pressure. It was a marquee matchup and Al usually has his gameplan in place for those.
OAKLAND (31-29)
Miami 5-5… we can get them at home, but not a given. For them, this would be a perfect time for their run game to come alive
at San Diego 5-5… the real test. We beat them at home with some last second heroics. Now we’re in their barn and they’re playing well
at Jacksonville 6-4… East Coast game will be very tough against a solid Jax team.
Denver 3-7….. not a certainty at all.
Indianapolis 6-4… man, this one will be tough.
Kansas City 6-4… the season will be on the line here, but we’ve played well at Arrowhead as of late.
Man, we could go 1-5. It will be tough for us to do better than 3-3. 4-2 or better is unlikely but possible.
The focus has been on division games thus far. If we go 6-0 in the division but 8-8 overall, and KC or SD has a better overall record (or both do, which will be fooked up), our only chance is winning the wild card.
Best bet is we go into KC with an identical 8-7 record and winner goes to playoffs.
We HAVE to beat either SD or Indy.

was happy Ford was catching the balls that came his way. I don’t think Bruce is better than Campbell at this point, but unfortunately I beleive our WR’s need his leadership style. Please get over it people. This is not a play off team, even if we some how squeaked in we would be beaten in the first round. our o-line is not good enough to match up with real competition, couple this with our below average receiver play and we dont stand a chance.
Funny the team shows improvement over last year but people here think we are headed to the super bowl. we lose to a championship caliber team and people here act as if the world is ending.
This team is a 500 ball club at best. Just as i predicted in the preseason we will be between 6-8 wins. We lost to a better team its not time to panic and bench/ trade or cut players or fire coaches.
Honestly what did you expect from this team? they have already shown more than any knowledgeable fan would have hoped they would.

We could have beat them without Seymour, but we also lost Scott & CJ37
CJ’s injury forced rookie late rounder Jeremy Ware into a starting role opposite Routt

To me, just making the playoffs won’t be enough. We have to beat somebody along the way. Obviously, winning a playoff game would be huse, but I don’t want to get too far ahead of myself.
Don’t want to be an average team that beat other average teams.
I want either Indy and/or SD (know we beat them before, but to beat them in December would be a whole other story).

I havent deflected blame at all. In the losses our qbs havent played well.
However it is clear that the o-line is and has been the biggest problem that the team has. The receivers are next on the list.
The qbs have been up and down, but it is mainly the shaky o-line that skews the performance of the qbs.
we have won even with piss poor pass protection, because of our qbs and running backs, and even receivers making plays.
All of those position groups will improve with better line play especially our qbs. Running for your life, throwing on the move or with people draped all over you is a recipe for disaster for any qb.
November 23rd, 2010 at 3:20 pm
There are quite a few teams that have won with inferior QBs;Wash with Rypien and Williams,Balt with Dilfer,Chi with McMahon are some but they all had a great team around them.We aren’t there yet.
November 23rd, 2010 at 3:23 pm
We have 2 average QBs and basically a rookie OC.
I agree that better Oline play and an upgrade at WR helps the whole situation.
Better Oline play gives our average QB that extra second or so to find a WR and deliver a pass.
Better WRs actually get open so that average QB can find them. And if they are not open, they can still make a play on the ball.

It all depends on how you build the team.
Campbell can’t function with crappy O Line play and inexperienced WRs
A good QB would function with both.
So, do you address the QB position (a must, IMO) first, then the other areas? Or do you address the O Line and WR position only to still have a crappy QB.
You can dance around it all you like, but Lefty is correct, it’s a QB driven league and I guarantee you a better QB gets the job done with the exact same supporting cast.
I’m all for upgrading the O Line. I’ve been talking it about it for some time.
But priority #1 is QB. Even a serviceable game manager would suffice. Campbell is barely serviceable with good O Line play.
November 23rd, 2010 at 3:31 pm
If we want a build a beastly O Line and get a 7-11 WR or two, OK Campbell may be a decent game manager, but I think having a good-great QB makes your team exponentially better.
Sure teams win with great everything else and decent QB, but I would settle for decent everything else and good-great QB.

Football starts at the line of scrimmage, this is where you begin to build because truly great qbs dont come by that often. A solid o-line means you can win even with a guy that is just above average. Want to win build from the inside out.
November 23rd, 2010 at 3:37 pm
I am with Jhill on this. Build up the O-Line and get a receiver to fill the role Schilens was supposed to.
Right now Bruce Gradkowski and Jason Campbell are not good enough to win games.
Raiders need to give it another try. Look for Carson Palmer or Tavaris Jackson…I would think Kolb but we don’t have anything to trade right now…and no you don’t trade Nnamdi!
Get a new QB because the two we have are not NFL quality.
Fix the C and RG or RT positions (can’t fix both RT & RG so pick one) and get a competent vet receiver
November 23rd, 2010 at 3:38 pm
We won’t win the division unless Grads takes over in time to win the Miami game and earn the start against SD. I think with Grads in there we win the division. We might have even won in Pittsburgh if he had started the 2nd half when there was time and things were still somewhat within reach.
I’d love it if we could pull off a win over Miami while the Chargers fall to the Colts next week. I know there’s no guarantee of either but that would be huge. Then if we knocked off the Chargers they would have VERY little chance of recovering us and passing us by with the stranglehold we would have in the division tiebreaker.
The Chargers are really not a great team. They have a great QB and Norv is a very good playcaller. If you remove the QBs from the equation we have a better team and I’m not sure it’s all that close. Unfortunately, QB is by far the most important position on the field.

But, Davis has to try again in free agency. The Raiders need to draft or pick up a UFA to groom as well. Someone that’s low cost because the Raiders aren’t very good at developing offensive talent

What is meant by “get it done”? we are in the hunt for a division lead as opposed to bottom feeders, is that getting it done, or do you mean win a super bowl? No qb on earth could win a super bowl with our o-line.
We havent seen grads or campbell behind good o-line play. The o-line has been sub par all season. The denver game was the only game with decent pass protection, not good, and we saw what jc did with that.
In order for us to truly know what our qbs can do we must protect the passer.
pass protection is the number one priority in football, with out it you cant run your offense. This is why there is such a premium on tackles and pass rushers.

With no first round pick and no apparent upgrade coming on the market this offseason, Campbell and Grads area about as good as it’s going to get in the near future.

Brady, Manning and Brees make their reads and get rid of the ball. That’s why they don’t take sacks and that’s why they stay healthy at that position.
Most QBs give their receivers a chance to fight for the ball.
Raider QBs pretty much hold the ball and take the sack or have to hurry the throw in the dirt…or take off running trying to truck a strong safety.

A) Stay with Campbell or maybe upgrade slightly to a game/manager system QB and build the line using 2nd or 3rd rounders, free agents, etc.
B) Get a real QB with some wheeling and dealing and try to maybe make a slight upgrade on the line.

November 23rd, 2010 at 4:27 pm
The O-line is being hampered by crappy QB play.
If we had any QB who would step up in the face of a rush and make a play, the O-line wouldn’t have to block 6 to 7 guys at a time.
Instead our guys throw the ball up for grabs, just go down without a fight, or throw the ball away.
November 23rd, 2010 at 4:29 pm
Every team is going to attempt to shut down and shut out Darren McFadden and to a lesser extent Michael Bush.
Bank on it. So whether its the QB or the O-Line…they better figure out a competent passing game…otherwise they will lose all the remaining games.
You can’t rely on blocked punts, and multiple turnovers in the 1st quarter forever….

When the Raiders were using the whole playbook, they were winning.
When they went conservative they lost.
______________________________________________________
These two brothas have summed up the entire situation we face in terms of winning the DIVISION…
As Mistic says, if you have a solid o-line, you can play simple, straight forward, smash mouth football. And yes Grads and even Campbell are capable of winning the the weak AFC West if we had a solid, consistent, o-line.
Now as Kell is saying, when your o-line is not strong or consistent, which is our case, you have to be creative and use more facets of the playbook, to keep the defense on their heels. We did not do that in Pittsburgh and we did not do that in SF. Hue Jackson went as bland as a rice cracker with no salt, and you saw how ineffective our offense looked.
Now in order to win the SUPERBOWL…we need a new QB and some reliable wide receivers….but these two posts sum up what we need to do in order to win the division right now!

I would argue that our WR’s are a bigger problem to our passing offense than our O-line.
Nobody is scared of them, so bring on the CB and Safety blitzes as well.
At least the O-line does a great job blocking in the running game, which usually makes legit NFL QB’s job easier passing the ball.

Hopefully we find him in some way shape or form in the offseason of 2011.
Kevin Kolb seems to have a lot of similarities to Matt Schaub’s pre-Houston career.
Or maybe a drafted QB or a draft day trade.
Or maybe Charlie Frye will get healthy and we can give him another whirl (just kidding)

JHill,
I think you gotta keep trying. Keep bringing in guys until you find someone that is competent.
This offense looks totally inept at times…Tennessee, Rams, 1st half of San Diego, San Fran, 1st half of Chiefs and Steelers.
If DMAC isn’t dominant or the defense getting 3 turnovers in the 1st QTR….this offense looks atrocious.
So as far as QB, keep bringing in credible competition…10.9 passing performances and more ints than TDs not going to get it done.
We are back in the early 90s again!

November 23rd, 2010 at 5:02 pm
I think Grads can get it done.
Give the guy a (legitimate) shot. The offense clearly functions better when he’s in there.
Take Sunday for example. Probably Grads’ worst performance as a Raider and it was just about as good as some of Campbell’s best. Factor in that we were on the road and already down by 3 TDs against a ferocious defense late in the 3rd quarter by the time Grads’ number was called. Oh, and that he had missed several weeks with an injury and was coming into an almost impossible situation, cold. Still, he had a nice drive going before throwing the bad pick.
Campbell is decent when he has about 4-5 seconds to survey the field and throw the ball with no one in his face. Grads is our only option to make something out of nothing, keep plays alive, and make the quick reads to get the ball down field and fit into tight spaces.
November 23rd, 2010 at 5:03 pm
Raiderfankirk,
The depth in the secondary is bad. If Nnamdi is out there the defense can do a lot more and at least one option is largely taken away.
Chris Johnson got burnt on 3rd and forever and there were a couple of other long completions on the two scoring drives that shouldn’t have happened.
Rashard Mendehnall was kept in check.
Defense is getting it done for the most part.
Its the QB, WR and OL that’s got us in trouble
November 23rd, 2010 at 5:04 pm
Grads crossed mid-field easily the first time he had the ball, and I swear it had been about an hour and a half since the last time we crossed midfield.
The said state of our QB situation, when merely crossing midfield is mass improvement.

Aaron Brooks and Walter were burdened with playing under an absolutely ridiculous situation. Ruined Walter’s career.
In general though, the only way to get a good QB is to develop your own. Other teams are getting rid of dead weight..that’s what the Raiders have.
JC – effectively cut by Washington with no takers
BG – a guy cut by Tampa, Cleveland, St. Louis and denied a shot with Houston…..a guy who is scrapping like hell to stay in this league..but is he the guy? Very, very doubtful…He’s already missed a lot of time

Jhill I think the fact that they saw Grads replace Russell is all they ever think about, it has them seeing stars.
Anybody that watched that game objectively saw our Oline get pushed around and miss assignments. We couldn’t run and we let Harrison come free 3 times. If ZMiller catches a few passes and Murphy plays close to what he’s capable and we run the ball a little that 1st half is very different.
NO one is saying Campbell is the second coming but damn he had no help. Murphy gives up on a TD pass JLH give sup on a route for a possible TD. If we make plays there Pitt changes the way they play us. It’s not 21-3 maybe it’s 14-10 instead and their much more cautious on defense.
All those passes were well thrown, but with zero results because guy’s just didn’t make plays. Murphy’s fumble hurt in that it stopped a drive even if we don’t score maybe we pin them back. Those were game changing plays. Nick Miller fair catches a ball on the 4 yardline affective stopping another drive.
As a team we sucked………..and to try to pin it on one guy is using specious logic at the very least. If we play better around Campbell I think he will play better. This deer in headlights crap is crap. If your Oline doesn’t get it done you aint gonna win………..period That includes Drew Brees and all the rest sure they may make a few more plays but they’ll also spend most of the game on their ass…………..period

Yep.
By the same token, a new defensive coordinator isn’t going to change anything about the way the defense is run. Marshall seems to have more freedom than any of the others in recent history, so I personally want to see him stay and coach up the youngsters.
If anything, the Raiders need a new WR coach and a new DB coach. Willie Brown is only a “consultant” of some sort these days, and Sanjay Lal doesn’t seem to have accomplished much with the young receiver talent on this team.

Truth is we are stuck with Campbell and Grads for the rest of the year- we’re gonna live or die with these guys and the rest of this team for that matter. That being said we have a chance to compete for a division crown and that feels pretty good! How we play with who we have down the stretch will define us good or bad.Personally I think we are improved to this point but we can be better. Can we win with Campkowski? Yes . —————
But then why bring up Tom Brady or Drew Brees at all? Everyone knows JC and Grads aren’t those guys. It’s painfully obvious. But they’re the only QBs available to the Raiders right now.
Talk offseason if you want – I know I am. The team has improved a whole lot from last year, that’s for sure. But a few more key pieces will have the Raiders in a very good position to compete.
In the meantime, Campkowski is what we have to live with. Sucks, I know. But continuing to argue that JC doesn’t have Tom Brady’s skills is like arguing to no end that water is wet.
November 23rd, 2010 at 6:59 pm
I must admit it is a little funny to see so many crying how bad this team is after all the hype coming into the Pitt game. You guys over hyped the team and now you’re overreacting. JC is a lousy QB and proved it time and again.
The Raiders will be fine this season. Prior to the season, you’d be happy with 7-9. Prior to the 3 game run, our Oline was the worst in the league. 3 weeks later people were thinking we’d dominate the best Run D in the league. Hilarious.
We’ll finish between 8-8 to 9-7. Take that to the bank and next year will be the year the Oline will improve while the Dline dominates. We’ll be legit next year because the JaPuke experiment will be long gone. Told you he couldnt carry the team!
November 23rd, 2010 at 7:02 pm
And I really don’t see any sign that at this point in his career, Carson Palmer is going to re-invent himself. If he can’t get it done with three very good receivers, a solid TE, and an offensive line at the very least on par with that of the Raiders, I don’t see why he’d get it done here.
Better than Jason Campbell and Bruce Gradkowski? Maybe. But I don’t see him being worth what it would take to pry him away from the Bengals.

Hey, the Raiders lost to the Steelers, so at least we all know AIG is happy. Congrats, buddy!

You guys dogging Vince Young kill me.
He is only 30-17 as a starter.
He was the 5th rated QB in the NFL before last weekend.
He went to the most recent Pro Bowl.
And you would rather have Carson Palmer? Palmer would get killed behind our O-Line. V Young would buy time for our horrible receivers to get open just like Vick does in Philly.
Yeah Vince threw a tantrum and tossed his uni in the stands but it was because he has a beef with Jeff Fisher. The dude wants to be the man and lead his team to victory. You think Campbell will ever toss his uni in the stands after Cable pulls him from game?
November 23rd, 2010 at 7:08 pm
The only thing I don’t like about VY is that he simply can’t stay on the field. I like his pocket mobility and his arm, but he gets injured a whole lot. Plus he tends to act like a punk, and I’m not sure the Raiders need that kind of personality in their locker room.
Kid can be a good player, and would sure as hell be a better option for the Raiders than Carson Palmer. If only because he’s younger and still has some room to grow. But I’m far from sold on him.
If he gets cut by the Titans (I don’t see that happening – Bud Adams loves him), MAYBE. But he wouldn’t be worth giving anything substantial up for in a trade.

Quarterback is not the problem.
Vanilla play calling does not work in the NFL.
November 23rd, 2010 at 7:10 pm
We don’t have to worry about Vince Young because he won’t be available. The owner already said Vince Young is going nowhere and Fisher is just going to have to co-exist with him.
It’s like someone said a few minutes ago and Jerry has mentioned it a million times. Players are available for a reason if teams are willing to part with them. Titans are not parting with V Young. So we can move on from that one.
November 23rd, 2010 at 7:11 pm
The DBs failed the Raiders first. Things began to trickle down from there. How many passes thrown should have been INT’d or at least deflected? Those same passes that were “big” 3rd down coversions for Pitts when the game was still 7-3 or 0-3 for that matter.
When Seymour was ejected from the game he should have have even been on the field if they didn’t covert some 3rd down thru the air that our DBs failed to intercept or knock the ball down – and it was well within them to do so – this may have been the coversion made on Chris Johnson that kept that drive alive. Otherwise, it was 3 and out and Pitts would have never gotten into a ryth!
JC wasn’t that bad during most of the game. What more can you do when you damn WRs, RBs and TEs can’t catch the damn ball or make a darn play??? That’s when things really began to get worse. Therefore, I don’t put much of anything on JCs shoulders because they were dropping all kinds of easy balls on him!
I witnessed the way this team plays without DHB; and trust me – its different! Maybe I am looking too much into it – maybe – because I have such high hopes for the young guy given his abilities …but I definitely noticed a difference in the way this offense runs and how the defense plays it! Pitts was crowding the line big time with little fear of deep routes. ZM was ineffective (prob in large measure to his own doing).
All being said, even though I do not think JC was bad as people in here say he was – his players have to catch the damn ball! – Grads looked much better running the offense. That much didn’t escape me either. He just has a ton more “anticipation” than JC. He releases the ball that much quicker – hence the ease of movement of the offense. JC has to play much faster to compete with a Grads ran offense.
November 23rd, 2010 at 7:13 pm
QB is the MAIN problem because
1. QB is the leader of the team.
2. QB must keep drives alive even if we dont score points and avoid 3 and outs.
If you noticed that when we got blownout in the past 2 years, it was when the QB looks lost and had a ton of 3 and outs. That happened with both JR and JC.

You were looking forward to JC being taken apart by Pittsburgh. Those are the words you used, and you can’t run from them. That’s why you’re not a real fan.
Game happened like I said it would, too. JC started. He turned the ball over so Cable pulled him for Grads. Exactly like I said he would if JC turned the ball over. Pressure from the Steelers’ linebackers ended up being the key factor, exactly like I said it would. But at no point was I looking forward to a loss like you were.
I said JC’s play might be improving and all we as fans could do was wait and see. You spend a full week of your existence pissing and moaning and whining about the inevitable fact that JC was going to get the start. Who is the real loser here?

We need to find out which QB in this draft has: leadership qualities, some mobility, a good (not great) arm, film junkie, and some of that cockiness thrown in.
If we can identify that guy we are in business. He sits and learn next year while we have 2 vets leading the way. I’ll take Bruce G and another vet with some mobility and not scared of defenders coming at him.

From what I’ve heard and seen, Luck is that guy. Unfortunately the Raiders are in no position to take him. Oh well.
Jake Locker might be an option, but before bringing a rookie QB in and putting him in that position, I’d like to see the Raiders establish a good offensive line and receiving corps.
November 23rd, 2010 at 7:26 pm
I wouldn’t mind seeing us draft a CB with our top pick if only that guy is Patrick Peterson of LSU. We would have to move back into the 1st rnd to get him but he is well worth it because he is a ball hawk and a big time punt returner. He doesn’t get challenged much during games just like Nnamdi so he would love to come in as a rookie and have the ball thrown his way. Plus he has that super cockiness/confidence about himself.
One game this year he fair caught a punt where the nearest defender was about 7 yds away from him. He went to the sidelines furious about calling Fair catch. He apologized to his coaches and his teammates for doing that and said he will never call fair catch again no matter what. His next opportunity was in the next game and first PR he got he took it to the house. That dude is money. He’s the real deal from the talent hotbed of Pompano Beach, FL. He turned down Urban Meyer to go to LSU told Florida he was gonna kick their a$$. We need guys like that.

Had Jano missed a FG or Ford not wrestled that int away, 99% of this blog (except for Mistic) would be all over JC for having a SF performance. On top of that, JC admitted he struggled in the first half in his own presser after the Sea game. He admitted they struggled in the whole game in the KC game. Doesnt that tell you JC was trending downward? Had you open your effin eyes you would have seen that but 1 effin pass in OT blinded you. And you refuse to admit that you got suckered.
2. I told you PItt was going to expose his a$$ because I knew they would. I saw all those flaws when you guys only see the one pass to Ford in OT. Please show me the evidence where I didnt want JC to start in Pitt. You aint got it. I dare you to find it.

I haven’t followed college QBs much this year outside of watching SEC games but I heard Locker was having a down year. I’m not too worried if it’s INTs he’s throwing because that could mean he’s a risk taker and thinks he can beat (confidence/cockiness) any coverage. I remember Locker from a couple years ago vs LSU and he gave LSU fits with his passing.
Thinking back, Matt Ryan had an interception knock on him coming out as well. But he was that film junkie who had confidence and wanted things put on his pads.

November 23rd, 2010 at 7:36 pm
Folks,
The Raiders are going to be one of those 3-yards and a cloud of dust teams that relies on exceptional defense.
Not developing a QB during the last 7 years is going to hurt the longer term development. The Raiders are on a path like the Vikings.
Build up the rest of the team and have a HUGE hole at QB.
Jason Campbell holds the ball way too long and takes sacks, pressures etc…His accuracy is bad.
Gradkowski gets rid of the ball. Unfotunately, his accuracy is even worse.
The Raiders have to focus on:
1. Continuing to strenthen the defense….gotta go the Ravens route!
2. Find someone to play Right Guard and Center
3. Find a legit receiver in free agency….these guys they got now are progressing at a glacial pace
Run the ball with DMAC and Bush……stop the run and play shutdown defense and hit the tight end.
I am telling you…that will be the formula for this squad.
Campbell and Gradkowski will be fringe players in the NFL next year!
I am all for giving a flyer on Carson Palmer…he’s better than the guy that looks confused and the fiery guy with no talent
November 23rd, 2010 at 7:39 pm
Get a tier II college QB in the late rounds or UFA and see if Hue can make him into a Tony Romo type story.
The Raiders stink at evaluating QBs. So no point in wasting a 1st or 2nd day draft pick.
Build up a boss O-Line and run the damn ball
November 23rd, 2010 at 7:39 pm
JC is not a good QB. I want him to be successful, but when I see him bounce passes on a simple swing play, or play the way he did against Pittsburgh, SF, most of the KC game, the Tennessee game, and the St. Louis game first half (before getting benched for an inability to move the offense) I think any reasonable person would have to conclude he sucks..PERIOD!
November 23rd, 2010 at 7:39 pm
I will say this about Cam Newton: He is NOT the answer for us. He can’t read defenses well and he has success as a read option QB. He can run but is not as elusive as Vick or V Young. I haven’t seen him go through his progressions. NFL defenses would destroy him.

When we have 1st and 10 and go backwards , whether it’s a 2, 5, or 8 yd loss, the drive is over. That happens every time.
We need at least 3 yds on 1st down to have a shot at keeping the drive alive. It’s that simple folks.

I actually predicted a loss at Pittsburgh. I don’t think the Raiders are going to beat the Chargers or the Colts, either. I predicted an 8-8 or 9-7 record at season’s end, much like you. This isn’t a team that has the talent to consistently compete with the elite teams in the league, and they certainly weren’t going to run the table for the rest of the season. I stated that many times last week while you were crying about Jason Campbell.
Jason Campbell posted the best performances of his career against Denver and Seattle. With him under center, the Raiders came out of the KC game with a hard-fought win and a tie for the division lead for the first time since 2002. Those performances guaranteed that JC was going to be the starter (in spite of your protests). Is he a Tom Brady-like talent? Of course not. Is he going to lead the Raiders to the Superbowl? I highly, highly doubt it. I also never said he was going to do any of those things.
You seem to be confusing my posts with those of someone else, because I never said JC could single-handedly beat Pittsburgh, or that he would continue having career games for the rest of the season. But I sure as hell wasn’t hoping for him to lose like you were. I’ve frequently posted about the Raiders still needing to find “The Guy” at the QB position, but your delusions somehow prevent you from seeing that.
On the Ford catch… what would you have done, AIG? The Raiders were out of field goal range because of a holding penalty. There were 20 seconds left in the game. Would you rather have had JC take a sack? Throw it away and have Janikowski attempt a 50+ yard FG? He threw the ball at the only receiver who had been making plays that day, and Ford rewarded him with a catch. Janikowski hit the FG. Much better teams than the Raiders have won in more ridiculous ways. It happens every week. But all of a sudden “Oh, take away those big plays and the Raiders would have lost!” Well, no kidding man.
I promised myself I wouldn’t argue anymore with a troll like you, so I don’t know why I am. Bottom line, you’re gloating in the Raiders’ defeat. It’s kind of pathetic.

THe Ford catch and throw from JC was the right thing. These receivers are not getting open…so let them fight for the ball.
Let’s see who can play and who can’t.

November 23rd, 2010 at 7:57 pm
Raiders definitely need to draft a center. Hopefully Pouncey or Wiz’s nephew will be there when the Raiders pick. If not, and a stud WR is there, I wouldn’t be opposed to the Raiders putting off the C pick until the 3rd round (kid from USC, maybe?). I have a feeling Michael Floyd is going to slip into the late second round, but we’ll see.
Also would not mind seeing Al draft a CB in the third round. Routt and Johnson’s performances are too inconsistent for my liking. One inconsistent CB can be covered up with good safety play. Two is a problem. Hopefully McFadden and Ware continue to progress, as well.
RT like Jared Gaither or Tyson Clabo in FA.
RG like Harvey Dahl in FA, or in the later rounds of the draft (Christ Stewart from ND, for instance).
Seymour, Huff, Gallery, Bush, and possibly Routt should be resigned.
Then there’s the QB question. Kaepernick might be around in the 6th or 7th round, and it would be nice to have a developmental prospect for Hue, Tollner, and Hackett to work with.

I’ve actually mentioned Josh Johnson here before as a guy I’d like the Raiders to take a look at. Wouldn’t be a bad signing for a #3 guy if the Raiders don’t find anyone they like in the draft.
We’ll get a good look at Tyler Thigpen next week. He’s been decent enough for some really awful teams (’08 Chiefs for instance), so who knows. He has decent mobility and a pretty good arm, but I don’t know about his accuracy or decision making.

**************************************
Chris, I thought I was the only poster left here that still thinks Grads can get it done.
Nice to know at least one person agrees.
JFB (formerly VR) used to be Grad’s biggest supporter, now he’ll say Bruce is better than JaJason, but not much more.
AIG is the most vehement and persistent in reminding this blog that JaJason sucks. But I don’t know what his thoughts are about Grads being a long term answer are.
You’s have to be Stevie Wonder not to conclude that JaJason sucks. If he’s not the WORST starter in the NFL, I’d like to know who is.
I don’t know with certainty that Grads can be the long term answer at QB, although I still think he can be. I can understand giving up on Grads if you think he’s too fragile to stay on the field, but I still haven’t seen a JaMoron or JaJason like performance that would lead me to think he CAN’T get it done if healthy.
Continuing to start JaJason is pure folly.
There’s absolutely no doubt that if the Raids have any hope of making the playoffs this year that Grads must start.
It’s also essential to see what Grads can do in order to know where the Raids stand moving forward.
Al Davis, you’ve done a nice job bringing in new players and turning this club around. Don’t screw this season and the future up by not admitting JaJason isn’t the next Plunk.
Tom Cable, if you truly make the QB call, then make the right one. You were correct when you declared Grads (when healthy) the unquestioned starter. The only reason to go back on this is if Bruce still isn’t 100% or close to it.
JaJason is a complete turd and can not be part of this team’s future.
Grads outperforms JaJason every chance he gets. Give this team a chance to make the playoffs this year and let’s find out if Grads has a chance to be a guy to move forward with.

I’d take a long look at the kid from Nevada. Locker scares me he just doesn’t dominate at the collegiate level like he should. I would take a look at Case Keenam from Houston as well. Cam Newton may be forced to come out this year if so YOU absolutely have to consider him see if he throw the route tree accurately. See how well he picks up offenses and how well he understands defenses because if those are there he might sit for a year but my god that kid is scaaarrry. That is a LOAD and a half to have to deal with I think if I liked what I saw in his proday and personal workout I’d take him no doubt…………….hell yeah!!

Josh Johnson could be a very very good pro Q in my mind. Plus he can just take off ala Vick and no one is going to catch him. I think he languishes on Tampon Bays bench until the Jason Freeman experiment ends.

So whats the “nickname” of the RAIDERS offense?????
Did someone call it Campbells soldiers??
LMFAO!! How bout the Black Pop Gun.

AIG, I like how you keep saying I overhyped JC or the Raiders when I’ve said many times over the course of the season that JC isn’t the long-term answer at QB, and said multiple times last week that the Raiders would more than likely drop the Pittsburgh game.
The Raiders are an improved team from last year, but not ready to compete with the elite teams in this league.
JC is one of two below-average QBs on the roster, who just so happened to earn a start in Pittsburgh since the Raiders won their three biggest games since 2002 with him at the helm.
And yet, you can do is call Campbell childish names and “predict that the team will lose to one of the best teams in the league (Astounding prediction! How’d you reach that conclusion, Merlin?), while actively hoping the QB plays poorly so you can be “right”.

If the Raiders draft a Q early in the 2011 draft, it would be nice for that player to sit and watch for awhile. But the fans are not going to like that.

Nickname for the Raiders Offense?? How’s about Campbells Chicken Soup?

Yeah, that’s probably the biggest downside of drafting a QB high. If the QB you have isn’t getting it done, the pressure mounts to put the kid in. The fact is, the vast majority of QBs are better when they’re not immediately thrown into the fire. Even a half of a season on the bench does a rookie QB a world of good sometimes.

Sammy,
I didnt see you in here proclaiming JC the fraud during hte win streak and taking shcytts from the JC lovers and JC is improving crowd. Dont talk schytt when you were no where to be found during that time.
Kinda hard to be callling others a little girl when things got rough and you were no where to be found. Who’s the little girl now?
=======
great.
you miss the whole point.
why aren’t I surprised?
First off, little girl, I’ve called out JC since day one, long before, and during the momentary win streak. also posted his horrendous ratings when others were cheering the fact the team won.
LMAO at your silly “when things got rough”. when did things get rough? it’s a blog, little girl.
Here, let me update things for you. You were wrong for 3 weeks in a row, and finally team lost and you are crowing, day after day.
makes u look weak, pathetic, and yes, feminine

Raiderman,
I try not to use Grad in my posts because the JC fan club jumps all over it as the only evidence of me thinking that JC sucks. I try to leave Bruce out and stick with the facts of how awful JC was, is, and will be.
Since you ask, I find it very frustrating to see people question Bruce’s ability. For example:
1. Vittorio asked on his tweet that “could Bruce have made that 47 yd throw to Ford in OT”. I tweeted back to him that Bruce’s bomb to Murph in Pitt last year went for 49 yds in the air for a 75 yd TD. It was so stupid to me to see a writer covering the Raiders not knowing that fact.
2. People continually asks whether Bruce can do better when all the evidence in the world has shown that his worst game as a starter is a 17 point loss to Dallas. It was hardly a Giants, Jets, Tenn, SF, KC or Pitt performance by either JC or JR. Morever, he was raking in 20+ first downs per game and avg 24 points per game this year even before the emergence of Veldheer/Oline and DMAC’s rushing domination for those 3 games.
I dont have a track record to say that Bruce is going to be a bonafided QB in this league. I do have the track record to say that Bruce is by far the best QB on our current roster affecting our current season. We can’t say 100% how Bruce would have done in the 3 game win streak because he was not in there. I do know 100% sure that Bruce outplayed JC in the same games with the same opponent and supporting staff. The evidence in the SF preseason game and STL reg season game convinced me as much.
I’d like to see him given more opps and I believe he will be. It’s a matter of time before JC is yanked again and for good. I believe it wont be long before the crowd boo his a$$ off on Sunday.

I don’t know. A guy who is completing 70% of his passes for over 10 yards per attempt, 21 TD’s, 6 ints, for the number two team in the nation? Who also has size and mobility? Playing in arguably the nations best conference? Seems like a good choice to me.
********************************************
This is the same rationale people had for drafting Tebow isn’t it?

I know. let’s sign him, let him sit for a full year, then put him in, even if he comes in fat and out of shape, and doesn’t know the playbook. then watch him get worse, next couple of years. maybe even being the worst qb in the league.
oh wait.
already tried that.

Lots of talk about UNR’s Colin Kaepernick, and his pro potential.
I live in Reno and have seen alot of his games.
At his best, he’s a poor man’s Vince Young.
He’s tall and lanky, runs very well, has a big arm with a long awkward delivery.
Needs to improve his ball security if he has any chance of success at the next level. (See his fumble against Hawaii this year, and other times he has been stripped as evidence. I once also saw him use the hand in which he was holding the ball in order to try to keep his balance and not go down on a scramble. He didn’t go down, but he left the ball behind !)
Hard to tell if he can make the transition. At UNR he’s bolstered by a great running game. Hasn’t been required or asked to make the second and third reads a QB must make at the next level.
Accuracy is spotty, but at times makes very difficult throws look easy. Can definitely throw those tough intermediate sideline outs and deep ball.
In short, the kid has the tools to be a good NFL QB, but he’s definitely a project.
Worth a shot in the mid rounds.

How come the Raiders have the top speed in the league and you RARELY ever see it displayed? Instead we get to see Mike Wallace run wild and the announcer says “well you just can’t stop that kind of speed”. Yet we have DHB, FORD, et al. and do almost NOTHING with it. Here we have these weapons that “you just can’t stop”, yet no one would ever know it. Something’s wrong with this picture.

I think we will win every game except the Dolphins game. Yes, our opponents are in great shape , but I have a feeling of a wild card year this year.
